Hello Spring! Time to take full advantage of living in LA… and by that, we don’t just mean the weather (though we don’t blame you if you take an early beach day) – we mean all we have to enjoy here in the City of Angels when spring hits.  We have mountains and rivers for camping and fishing, oceans for sailing and parks for exploring.  We have art and music and culture from being in one of the major cities of the world.  And we have opportunities to help and volunteer.  Here are our favorite ways this weekend to take advantage of the endless opportunities to explore, have fun and even give back, family style.

Beauty and the Beast
The smash hit Broadway musical is now at the Pantages Theatre with Belle, the Beast, Gaston, Lumiere, Chip and all the others. (Insert your own lame “Be Our Guest” joke here, we just can’t make ourselves do it!). Fri.- Sun., Various times. Hollywood. $25-$250. Ages 3+. Event details.

Puppet Festival
Celebrate the art of puppetry with art making, close-up puppet “happenings,” and a host of puppet performances that will delight kids of all ages. Sun., 10:00 pm – 4:30 pm. West LA. $5-$10. All ages. Event details.

Roof Piece at the Getty
This is one of those “look, but don’t try it” art experiences for kids as dancers wearing fire-red costumes perform all over the place – including (your guessed it) the roof.  Sat., 1:00 pm & 3:00 pm. West LA. Free. All ages. Event details.

Pasadena Area

Huck Finn Fishing Derby
Spend a night under the stars and then wake up early the next morning to catch a rainbow trout during the fishing derby. Even if you don’t begin to know how to catch something that wriggles (other than your toddler) you can watch, camp and have fun. Fri. – Sun., Various times. Sierra Madre. $10-$55. Ages 3+. Event details.

Santa Anita Racetrack Family Day
And they’re off: for an afternoon of free, fun-filled activities for kids on the track’s picturesque infield including inflatable jumpers, carnival games, face painting, pony rides, and more. Sun., 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm. Arcadia. Free-$5. Ages 4+. Event details.

4Good Family Day
Do good, feel good.  The whole family can volunteer together on the same afternoon and provide help for our men and women overseas, LA Children’s Hospital, Meals on Wheels or for homeless animals. Sun., 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Studio City. Free. All ages. Event details.

Worth the Drive

Pyrate Adventure Sail
Ahoy mateys!  Experience the thrill of sailing a tall ship as kiddos hoist sails, fire cannons and fight off pirates during this family-fun afternoon on the high seas. Sun., 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm. Dana Point. $23-$40. Ages 4+. Event details.

Raffi in Concert
Road trip!  Seriously, for the under 5’s, this is like a Beatles concert. So stick the kids in the car, spend the morning pedaling along the beach in a surrey, spend the afternoon at the zoo, and take break mid-day to hear Raffi! Sun., 1:00 pm. Santa Barbara. $35-$55. Ages 2-5. Event details.

What do you love most about spring in LA?  What have you been looking forward to all winter (or perhaps “winter”) long?
