It’s June! School is just about to end, and summer is right around the bend.  Here’s what’s on our radar to get us in the mood for kicking back with the summer fun…  Kindie rock or kiddos who rock, comic heroes mixing with wild animals, days and ways to celebrate local neighborhoods, and plays and ballets for mini theatre goers.  Throw in a little bit of art, cooking and cars and you’ve got an activity or two to tantalize even the pickiest playmate.



MOCA Big Family Day
The biggest hands-on, family-friendly, modern art celebration of the year takes place this weekend at MOCA.  Dive into the playful art of Urs Fischer with studio projects and lively conversations in the galleries. Sun., 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Downtown. Free. All ages. Event details.


Lummis Day
The best of home-grown Northeast LA music, dance, food and community is at this festival that takes place at the sites of two historical museums.  Each place has a bevy of kid fun and performances, so be sure to check the schedule. Comic Jungle at the Zoo
Calling all Super Heroes!  Dress up as your favorite comic book character and dash over to the Zoo to enjoy fun activities & discover which animals have the power of flight, night vision, super strength, and more. Sat. & Sun., 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Griffith Park. $12-$17. All ages. Event details.

Hopi Cooking & American Indian Culture

RockSTAR Battle of the Bands
Get out the hair gel and leather pants, put the earplugs in, and prepare to rock ‘n’ roll on the Sunset Strip, as over 100 kid bands perform their young hearts out to celebrate the importance of music education in schools. Gilmore Car Show

Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players
The hippest kindie rock band is back to play a hip little venue – McCabe’s Guitar Shop. All the cool kids will be there, with a parent, grandparent, or friend (real or imaginary), to enjoy a perfect playdate. Sun., 11:00 am. Santa Monica. $18. Ages 2-10. Event details.

Winnie the Pooh
Little attention spans wander, and the darkness and costumes of the theater can be scary.  Solution: a show specially designed for the under 5 crowd, that’s short, has little dialogue, no blackouts or bad guys, and best of all it’s about everyone favorite silly old bear. Santa Monica Festival

Midsummer Night’s Dream Ballet
