With the opening of Milo + Olive, Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan, the talented husband-and-wife team behind Rustic Canyon, Huckleberry, and Sweet Rose Creamery, have transformed a former Santa Monica coffee-and-Danish stop into a neighborhood bakery and artisan wood-fire pizzeria, almost always open for dine-in or take out. Like its sister restaurants, Milo + Olive is committed to using the best local seasonal ingredients, in a casual, family-friendly casual spot for a tasty snack or a quick meal.
Named for the proprietors’ progeny (real and imagined), Milo + Olive originated as an expanded baking kitchen. Loeb and Nathan fell for the location’s huge rotating oven and envisioned the new venture as a bread/flour workshop; pizza fit their theme perfectly and fills a culinary void in the vicinity.
Milo + Olive offer patrons a transparent dining experience: floor-to-ceiling windows beckon grown ups and kids alike to an intimate, yet open and inviting space. Diners engage in conversation while being served at two square communal tables, or perched at the long stainless-top counter offering front-row seats to a how-toshow in the expansive kitchen. One wall of the airy dining area displays a gallery of framed letter-sized artwork by diverse a local artist and friend of the owners. The fresh aroma of house-baked baguettes, pastries and bagels (yes, they make their own!) permeates the eatery, as its bakery also serves the daily bread needs of its ‘siblings.’
The take-away display offers a plethora of savory and sweet selections – from melt-in-your-mouth maple walnut sticky buns and a daily doughnut, to flaky, super cheesy rye biscuits and sourdough skillet flatbread with seasonal toppings. A full array of Verve coffee drinks and Art of Tea teas make the perfect accompaniment. Little ones’ mouths water over whole-wheat chocolate chip cookies and blueberry ciabatta, as kiddiesquench their thirst with a variety of freshly squeezed juices including sweet-tart lemonade, ideal for any enterprising youngster’s roadside stand.
Breakfast service begins at 7:00am, with a full menu of kid-friendly choices, including house made muesli and frittatas with Weiser Farms potatoes and kale. Beginning at 11:00am, lunch is offered with Farmer’s Market-driven salads and seasonal specialties such as McGrath Farms roasted pumpkins with brown butter, fried local squid with crispy lemon and Calabrian chiliesand a rotating variety of wood-fire pizzas. Dinner is served until closing at 11:00pm, 7 days a week, with all items available for take out.
In keeping with the workshop theme, Milo + Olive’s menu will be ever evolving, making it a dynamic and fun eating experience each time.
