Urban Kids Consignment

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Sensational Resale Store” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Urban Kids Consignment: I love the fact that Urban Kids is a community of families that help each other. Urban Kids provides a safe place where you can buy and sell gently used items 50-90% off retail.

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
UKC: Two things.Urban Kids organizes a massive 4 day kids consignment event. Four times a year, our event draws thousands of families looking for gently-used kids clothing, shoes, toys, baby gear and so much more! We have over 300 sellers that make $200-300 each season on outgrown gear and our shoppers save 50-90% off retail. Win! Win! Urban Kids also donates truck loads of gently used children’s items after each event to families that need them the most.

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
UKC: Urban Kids started as more of a hobby or something to do in my spare time. I have always been a bargain shopper. Finding the gem in the rough has always been a thrill for me. Now it has become so much more. Urban Kids has now become my sole income for me and my 3 children. It also helps out so many other families make ends meet.

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
UKC: Haha… I should start with all 4 during event week. but… I stick to tea on most days!

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
UKC: It is the little things that go a long way! A simple smile and a thank you warms my heart. This little reminders are needed during a big event week.

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
UKC: When I am asked how much money I make or the comment “you must make a lot of money”. I am not sure why people feel they have a right to know this information but I really does bother me.

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
UKC: Wine and good friends!

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
UKC: I think if you asked any business owner it would be multitasking. So am not sure it is a secret.

RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
UKC: Ah…. I love this this advice. Really listen to your customers. Then let them hear that you understand and you will try to do something about it. Now that I am thinking about it…. it totally applies as a parent and a business owner.

RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
UKC: Gosh… I really can not think of any bad advice… I think one should listen then use what they can. Discard what they can not.
