The world can do with more random act of kindness, especially on an airplane. Chicago teacher Kimber Bermudez was on a Southwest flight to Florida to visit her parents when her seat mate struck up a conversation with her. Bermudez dove right in and told her neighbor all about her job as a teacher for low-income students, including the struggles she faces.

When she brought up that her job has heartbreaking moments and that her students should “never have to go without,” she was met with an outpouring of support she wasn’t expecting.

In a Facebook post from Jul. 10, Bermudez regales the story of how fellow passengers from behind her and across the aisle eavesdropped on her conversation and wanted to help in some small way. When the flight was over, the teacher found herself with $530 in cash that she says she plans to use to purchase books and give back to the community.

The teacher’s intention was only to share her story, and no one was more surprised than her to be met with such an act of kindness. Perhaps the most poignant thing she learned was that “When the world seems crazy there are always good people.”

We couldn’t agree more, Kimber!
