LunchSkins by 3greenmoms just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Awesome Snappy Snack Bags. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!
Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome Snappy Snack Bags” – what do your customers value most about your business?
3greenmoms: I’ll let you in on our secret to success… we care, and our customers recognize and appreciate that we do. We’re mainly moms here at 3greenmoms. We have the same everyday problems our customers do — getting out the door on time in the mornings, racing to another sports practice, and helping get dinner on the table at night. We do our utmost to live up to the highest standards of integrity, quality, and service we have set for ourselves. That we are a mission-based company separates 3greenmoms and our product from our competitors. By that I mean we were founded literally as a reaction to a statistic my kids brought home from science class: that every year 20 billion — with a “B”! — plastic bags are thrown away in public schools alone. As a lifelong lover of the environment and conservation, I was shocked and immediately felt called to help in what small ways I could… but I also wanted to make an impact. While LunchSkins reusable bags provide the alternative to single-use plastic waste, 3greenmoms is our brand on a mission to reduce the plastic pollution epidemic through education, awareness, giving back to our local and global community.
RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
3greenmoms: We are real, down-to-earth people creating solutions to problems we’ve experienced in our daily lives. It just so happens, many other people have those same problems! We value feedback from our customers and partners, and we’re always striving to adapt, innovate, and grow the LunchSkins brand to help families go greener for a healthier planet.
RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
3greenmoms: I like to say 3greenmoms and LunchSkins started around the kitchen table… because that’s literally where they came to life! After hearing from my kids how many plastic bags are used once for a sandwich or some chips and then end up never breaking down in landfills or polluting our oceans and sea life, I felt called to action and innovation. There had to be a better way. I came up with the idea of a reusable, dishwasher-safe (one of our biggest selling points) cloth bag, and my aunt sewed the first prototypes… and the rest is history!
RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
3greenmoms: Harney and Sons “Paris” black tea. It’s become a “thing” in our office. You could call it a morning obsession! It starts the morning off right.
RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
3greenmoms: As an optimist by nature, I’d have to say my biggest pet peeve (in business and in life) is negative energy. Running a business is a constant roller coaster. You have to learn not to get caught up in the daily, weekly, or even yearly highs and lows or they’ll sink you. I surround myself with “can-do” people, have learned to take calculated risks, and built a strong, dynamic team to charge ahead with me.
RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
3greenmoms: I’m a nature gal through and through! Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed, I get outside. It’s amazing what a quick walk or run will do to settle my mind or clear my head. There’s a beautiful trail near our office in Bethesda, Maryland, and I’m luck enough to live right next to some of the most beautiful wooded walks on the East Coast. Reconnecting with nature through exercise is my form of meditation. It opens my eyes to new ideas, opportunities, and solutions. I typically come back with a sense of purpose and calm. I also love to bake — it makes me feel creative and satisfies my sweet tooth!
RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
3greenmoms: I am pretty positive and resilient, which helps when weathering the ever-changing business climate. I am also a believer in collaboration — with team members, partners, customers, and influencers. Great ideas, inspiration and execution come from working together, not working in a vacuum. Success doesn’t happen alone.
RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
3greenmoms: Don’t react too quickly. Whatever it is you’re tackling, step back, take a deep breath, and let it settle before making any decisions. Also, invest in good people who share your core values.
RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
3greenmoms: I can’t think of any specific advice that was terrible, but my own advice is to trust your gut and be wary of overnight success. Starting and growing your business always is twice as hard as you think and takes twice as long. If someone tells you how easy it is to grow revenue or build your brand quickly, they’re probably not a great source of wisdom. Stay humble but persevere. Never underestimate the sticking power of hard work and true grit.
