After practicing law for many years in snowy Chicago, Kate Loweth returned to her Bay Area hometown in 2013 with her husband and three kids – Nora, Patrick and Joe. Kate joined the Red Tricycle team as a writer in early 2015 and she was thrilled to put her slightly obsessive love of grammar (thanks, Mom!) to use as Bay Area Editor starting in 2017. When not writing, you can find Kate planning her next camping adventure, exploring a new hiking trail or enjoying a glass of wine with friends.

Favorite place to play outdoors: Big Sur. It’s a beautiful place to camp, hike and hit the beach – all of my favorite things! You feel like you are so far away from the city but it’s only a few hours drive from the South Bay.

Favorite thing to do on a rainy day: IMAX movie at The Tech Museum

Favorite restaurant to take the kids: Tacolicious at Santana Row (outdoor seating + margaritas = heaven)

Can’t-live-without mom product: BAND-AIDs of every shape and size. You can never have too many. I keep a zippered pouch of them in my purse at all times with some Dum Dums because a sucker and a BAND-AID can cure 93% of all kid injuries.

Most unique thing you’ve ever done with your kids locally: We slept overnight at the lighthouse hostel in Pescadero and spent our days exploring the tide pools and flying kites.

Family goal for the next year: Travel more! My kids are at such great ages that I want to take advantage of that. We’ve gone on some great road trips to Pismo Beach and Mount Lassen recently. I would love to do more of that!
