There’s one universal truth in parenthood—there’s never enough time to make dinner. We’re always running someone to soccer practice, fighting giant piles of laundry, and trying to work a full day in between. The solution: 5-ingredient recipes that you can whip up in a flash. These easy meals are very kid-friendly, and mostly rely on items you’re likely to already have in your pantry so you won’t have to make a separate trip to the store (who has time for that?). We’ve left out some of the more obvious choices because we know you’re already a pro at grilled cheese, taco Tuesdays, quick eggs, and the like. Consider your meal plan done!

Creamy Tomato Tortellini with Pesto

The base for this filling dish is cheese-filled tortellini, which is pretty much the most kid-friendly pasta around. Add some mini meatballs or sliced pre-cooked sausage if you want to up the protein in this dish.

5-Ingredient Lemon Chicken with Asparagus

Whether you go with chicken thighs or chicken breasts, this recipe from Pinch of Yum is super flavorful and easy to make. The citrus from the lemon is mellowed out with honey to satisfy those picky palates.

Ground Turkey Lettuce Wraps

We love how flavorful these lettuce wraps are. Butter lettuce works best and you can serve it over rice for those picky ones in your family.

Easy Crockpot Ranch Chicken

If your kid isn’t a Ranch fan yet, now is the time to indoctrinate them. This 4-ingredient recipe from The Cookie Rookie makes kid-friendly chicken in a veg-free sauce, so you’re more likely to avoid the mealtime tantrums.

Crocs with socks. Oversized t-shirts over teeny tiny shorts. Stanleys and Lululemon. There’s no doubt that Gen Z and Gen Alpha styles can be a bit of a head-scratcher. To make things even more confusing, known fashion trends from back in the day are now something else altogether. Take Izod polos and boat shoes: Better not call them “preppy” unless you enjoy having your tween or tween roll their eyes at you. In hopes of properly explaining Gen Alpha style for parents everywhere, we chatted with a Gen Z teen and got some explanations from mom and interior designer Kristina Kairis.

If you need more help decoding your kid, check out our guide to middle school slang and why kids are mewing in class.

Coquette

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style revolves around ultra-feminine things like pearls, bows, pink, pastels, and soft, lacy, girly-girl clothes. Kairis explains it as “Marie Antoinette in modern times,” and our Gen Z teen confirms this is on point. The teen expert said coquette is also used to describe a current mood, as in “I’m feeling very coquette today.”

Preppy

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style is probably the most confusing to understand—at least for Gen X and Millenials. What we consider “preppy” a.k.a. polo shirts, khaki shorts, deck shoes, over-the-shoulder sweaters, and plaid, is NOT preppy for Gen Z and Gen Alpha kiddos. For them, preppy means bold and bright colors, Lululemon, Stanley cups, smiley faces, and for some reason, our teen expert says neon Nirvana hoodies are also preppy (our former grunge selves are SO perplexed).

Kairis mentions that the preppy look feels like upgraded VSCO girls, and the Gen Z teen agrees. There is also a good and bad way to use the word “preppy;” it all depends on how you say it, as Kairis mentions in her TikTok.

Aesthetic-Aesthetic (a.k.a. Vanilla Girl)

We all know that the term “aesthetic” is a favorite for Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids. But what you might not know is that it’s also a style. This style is all about the beige, the neutrals, the cozy, the soft, and the mellow—hence, Vanilla Girl.

Cottage Core

According to our Gen Z teenager, cottage core is a style that looks like you want to live off the grid, raise chickens, and make bread from scratch. So, all those homesteading IG accounts you follow? They’re living the cottage core life. Kairis explains it as the English countryside, going on a picnic, living a simplified life in an oversimplified way. Kairis also included long fancy nails in her cottage core style board, but our teen expert said acrylic nails are in no way part of the cottage core aesthetic.

E-Girl

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style features a lot of black, overdone makeup, and mesh, so your brain might automatically think Emo, but E-Girl is a shortened version of “electronic girl,” and it is a blend of emo, goth, and Japanese and Korean street style. According to Wikipedia, the style gained popularity with the worldwide release of TikTok, a stark contrast to the filtered world of Instagram, which was the preferred platform of preppy girls.

E-girls wear baggy thrift-store finds, crop tops, platform shoes, plaid miniskirts, pigtails, and anime-inspired makeup. Our teen expert said that most e-girls are known to be streamers (they use Twitch) and wear headphones. Kairis says that the E-girl style is like “coquette meets goth” and that it almost feels like a “gothy, toned-down Harajuku girl,” which is pretty accurate.

Kawaii

The Kawaii aesthetic, which is also a Japanese street style look, is similar to coquette in that there are lots of pastel colors and lace. The clothes are almost doll-like in design and include fluffy skirts, scalloped shirts, patterned overalls, and anything that feels “cute.” There are also a lot of animal logos, Hello Kitty, jewelry, and keychains.

Soft Girl

This Gen Alpha micro-trend is a blend of coquette and Kawaii, with a bit of edge for good measure. Think eyelet fabric, pastels, gingham, and floral prints paired with platform shoes, bucket hats, and colorful hair clips. Cardigans and cropped jackets are also a big part of this look.

Kairis posted another video to get more details on what kids today call what we consider to be preppy style.

Our resident Gen Z expert said she hadn’t heard the term “Old Money” and figures it’s a Gen Alpha phrase. This aesthetic is what millennials and Gen X would consider “preppy” fashion. It’s definitely in line with the silent luxury fashion trend that gained popularity thanks to Succession. Think simple lines, neutral colors, loafers, sweaters worn over the shoulders, leather tote bags, blazers, etc. There aren’t too many kids wearing this style, however.

If you’re wondering why you aren’t hearing too much about the style of Gen Z and Gen Alpha boys, it’s because while there are some e-boys and preppy guys out there, a majority of tween and teen boys tend to dress as if they’ve just rolled out of bed. They almost always wear Crocs with socks, t-shirts, and athletic shorts, something that hasn’t changed much since we were young—minus the Crocs, of course.

If you want more help decoding today’s fashion trends and micro-styles your tween or teen might be coveting, Kairis created a free Gen Alpha style guide you can download here.

As parents, we do everything we can to keep our families safe and healthy. We childproof our homes, make sure they eat well, and buy the best products for their overall well-being. But what about the air inside our homes?

While it’s easy to overlook, your indoor air quality can have a big impact on your kids’ health—just one more vital step in safeguarding their health!

We’ve broken down five surprising indoor allergies that could be affecting your family’s health and what you can do next to keep them protected.

5 Common Indoor Allergy Triggers You Might Not Know About

1. Dander

Despite common misconceptions, dander are tiny flecks of skin shed by both animals and people. Although you may think your cat or dog is a culprit, your child’s pet hamster or bird can also create dander. “Even your hairless cat can shed dander,” adds Gene Ehrbar, VP of Product at Molekule. And while hypoallergenic breeds exist, Ehrbar also warns that no animal is truly dander-free.

Dander often accumulates on your floors and furniture, and at times, it can become airborne and linger in the air, especially as you sweep or vacuum your house. Even if you don’t have pets, dander can make its way into your home on clothing or by visitors who have animals.

If you have any sensitive kiddos in your house, keep an eye out for sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, itchy, red, or watery eyes, or if they rub their nose a lot. For children with asthma, a dander allergy can also cause difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or a whistling or wheezing sound when they breathe out.

2. Volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can be released into the air from household products, such as paints, cleaners, and air fresheners. They can cause short-term and long-term health effects, from headaches and nausea to irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

Ehrbar also urges parents to take caution with another household item you might not be aware of that releases VOCs: your gas stove. “You may have read in the news recently that gas stoves and the overall effects of cooking have an impact on indoor air quality,” says Ehrbar. “Inadequate ventilation can lead to unhealthy levels of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde.”

And a recent Harvard study can confirm. Their recent study identified 21 VOCs alone from gas stoves that increase both children’s and adult’s risk for asthma, cancer, and other illnesses.

3. Dust mites

Dust mites are microscopic pests that live in the dust throughout our homes, as well as in the objects we use or come in contact with daily—we’re talking mattresses, pillows, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and even your kids’ stuffed animals. They thrive in warm, humid environments, and feed on dead skin flakes that we and our pets shed (yep, you read that right!).

Unfortunately, this common indoor allergen can trigger allergic reactions and asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals, especially children. As kids typically spend most of their time playing indoors and on the ground, their developing lungs are more susceptible to ingesting dust and dirt.

“They inhale more air more rapidly in proportion to their size than adults do, which increases their exposure to air pollutants,” says Ehrbar. “They’re more likely to breathe through their mouth, meaning that pollutants bypass the body’s nasal filtration.”

4. Cockroach allergens

We hate to say it, but cockroaches are adaptable creatures that can survive in a wide range of environments. Sure, they commonly prefer more warm and humid environments, but they can survive just about anywhere there’s abundant food and shelter.

While you may not even have cockroaches in your home, there can still be cockroach allergens (a substance from cockroach saliva and droppings) lurking in your home. According to the American Lung Association, one in five homes that never had a cockroach problem still contain a significant amount of cockroach allergen in dust and fabrics.

These allergens, as you likely already guessed, are usually found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home where food is stored or prepared. They can worsen kids’ asthma symptoms and trigger asthma attacks, so be sure to keep your spaces clean and free of food debris.

5. Mold

Mold is a type of fungus that loves damp, humid environments. It spreads by releasing tiny spores into the air that can grow on your walls, ceilings, floors, and on furniture or carpet if they become damp. And it doesn’t take long for mold to take over; once a spore attaches to an item, mold can grow within 24 to 48 hours, and start to colonize anywhere from three to 12 days.

If you currently have any areas of your house with moisture issues, like the bathroom, kitchen, basement, and attic, it’s best to address it as soon as possible, as mold typically thrives in these spaces. Although some may be able to coexist with certain types of mold, kids’ respiratory systems are still developing.

This makes them more vulnerable to the effects of mold exposure, which can look like sneezing, a stuffy nose, itchy skin and rashes, recurring colds, or respiratory issues, such as coughing and chest tightness.

How to Control Indoor Allergies in Your Home

Reducing indoor allergies in your home can help create a healthier environment for your family. Here are some tips to help you minimize these five common allergens:

1. Upgrade your indoor air quality with Molekule’s air purifiers

Add an air purifier to rooms where your family spends the most time to ensure they’re breathing the cleanest air possible. Molekule’s Air Pro and Mini+ use a patented technology that goes beyond conventional filters to destroy allergens, pet dander, mold, bacteria, viruses, and odors.

The Air Pro is perfect for larger living spaces (like living rooms and family rooms), while the Mini+ is ideal for smaller areas like nurseries, playrooms, and bedrooms. Both air purifiers feature sensors that automatically adjust to air particle and chemical levels, ensuring that your air stays clean and fresh without any manual intervention. They’re also app-enabled and whisper-quiet, so you can control it from your smartphone and enjoy a peaceful environment.

2. Clean your home regularly

Although it now seems almost inevitable that you’ll come into contact with dust mites—four in five homes in the U.S. have dust mite allergens in at least one bed!—you can help reduce them by washing your bedding regularly in hot water and using allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows. Be sure to also vacuum carpets and upholstery regularly to cut down on dust mites and dander, and remove shoes and outerwear before entering the home.

3. Remember: No crumbs left behind

Worried about cockroach allergens? Store food in airtight containers, and seal cracks and crevices where cockroaches can enter the home. Look to cockroach baits or traps, and keep, Molekule’s air purifier close by to further eliminate allergens.

4. Don’t forget pets need upkeep, too

Bathe and groom your pets regularly to reduce shedding, and wash their bedding and toys frequently. Try to designate pet-free zones in your home, especially in bedrooms, to help eliminate areas with pet dander.

5. Opt for natural cleaning products

Choose household products labeled as “low VOC” or “VOC-free,” and when using products like paints, cleaners, and air fresheners, do so in well-ventilated areas. Increase ventilation in your home by opening windows and using fans, and consider using natural alternatives to chemical-based products.

Improve your indoor air quality this spring by shopping for the Air Pro and Mini+ purifiers to help your family breathe easier!

I was at the zoo with a baby strapped to my chest, another in a stroller, and one getting uncomfortably close to Ozzie, the zoo’s dominant silverback gorilla when she caught my eye. The zookeeper stood off to the side, patiently chopping fruit, meat, and veggies into bite-sized pieces. Just like I do. Every. Single. Meal. Standing at the zoo, I realized that feeding toddlers (yep, even the picky eaters) really boils down to this: make it easy for them to feed themselves, make it pretty, and keep the risky food to a minimum, or you’ll end up tossing out the whole shebang. Below are my toddler dinner ideas cliff notes from my zoo, er, kitchen.

Toddler Dinner Ideas: Safe Bets

  • Mediterranean Snacking Board: hummus, pita slices, cucumbers, red pepper, halved cherry tomatoes, feta, and sliced almonds.
  • Pasta tossed with rotisserie chicken, parmesan, and peas (reserve a little of the pasta water and mix it in to make the cheese gooey)
  • Baked, sliced sweet potatoes brushed with olive oil, topped with sliced avocado and hard-boiled egg (scrambled eggs work too).
  • Tacos with finely shredded chicken, cheese, and black beans, and a side of corn on the cob.
  • Whole grain English muffins with marinara and mozzarella (toasted in the oven), with orange slices.
  • Pancakes (add cinnamon to the mix) smeared with peanut butter and topped with thin slices of apple.
  • Boiled eggs, halved and salted, with broccoli, carrots, and snap peas (with ranch for dipping).
  • Broccoli, finely chopped, with shredded carrots, sauteed with ground turkey, soy sauce, and an optional spoonful of brown sugar.
  • Cereal and smoothies (I know, but it’s okay every once in a while, and the smoothies are packed with nutrients).
  • Scrambled egg and cheese burritos with cucumbers and tiny tomatoes on the side.
  • Pesto alphabet pasta with peas.
  • Mac & Cheese with sneaky veggies (tiny-sized pieces of broccoli, peas, or kale).
  • Toddler Charcuterie: Turkey Pepperoni, boiled, halved eggs, cubes of cheddar cheese, veggies, and a dipping sauce.
  • Cheese quesadillas (add beans or ground beef or rotisserie chicken for extra protein) with tomatoes and sour cream.
  • Avocado toasts on whole grain with kosher salt and diced shrimp.
  • “Choose your own adventure” burrito bowls with seasoned ground turkey, diced tomatoes, avocados, sour cream, and shredded lettuce options.
  • Alphabet pasta with jar tomato sauce, food processed with a handful of spinach or cooked carrots.
  • Baked chicken tenders and cooked carrot coins (dredge tenders in flour, dip in egg, and roll in Panko, then bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until done).
  • Baked, diced sweet potatoes with cinnamon and rotisserie chicken with sour cream and honey dipping sauce.

If You’re Feeling Lucky

  • Garbanzo beans, diced avocado, and feta cheese tossed with a little lemon juice and salt.
  • Couscous with peas, mint, and halved mini tomatoes.
  • Quinoa muffins (use 1 cup of cooked quinoa for every 1 egg, plus mix-ins like ham and cheese cubes or spinach and diced tomato, baked in muffin cups for 20 minutes at 350 degrees).
  • Deconstructed meatloaf (add salt and pepper to ground meat, bake until done, and serve with a side of ketchup, mashed potatoes, and green beans).
  • Curried chicken salad (baked chicken, cream cheese, and a spoonful of mayo, creamed) on cucumber slices and whole-grain toast.
  • Garbanzo beans with garlic, lemon, and olive oil.

Don’t Forget to Sneak Nutrition into Dessert

  • Banana ice cream (puree sliced frozen bananas; add things like peanut butter, cinnamon, or honey for a twist)
  • Fruit pizza: Roll out and bake refrigerated croissants, spread on cream cheese, top with sliced fruit; cinnamon sprinkle optional)
  • Berries and sugar-free whipped cream.
  • Chocolate-dipped (or chocolate chip-studded, if you don’t want to wash an extra dish) bananas.
  • Frozen grapes, halved.
  • Canned pumpkin puree with cinnamon and whipped cream.

Sometimes you just need a few toddler dinner ideas to get you started. I hope my go-to’s (after all my trial-and-error) will help you find something they’ll eat without coaxing.
