Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. So if you’re craving a sunkissed glow (without that sunkissed damage or dangerous tanning beds), you’re here on a mission for the best self tanner. And it just so happens that our Shopping Editor has done all the self tanning research for you, so you can skip the many (many, many) mistakes she’s already made. These are our favorite tried-and-tested self tanning products and a full breakdown of each one, so you’ll be able to pick what works best for you.

First, let’s go over a few tanning basics that’ll help you make the best choice.

Self-Tanning Tips:

  • Exfoliate and shave before self tanning. That’s rule #1.
  • No matter what products you use prior to self tanning, either make sure it’s totally oil-free (it’ll break up the tan formula), or use an oil-free wash after scrubbing down to get any oils off your skin.
  • Always use a little body lotion on areas where your skin is thicker or drier; it’ll absorb product faster and the lotion adds a layer of protection.
  • If you have light hair, protect it. Use a headband, or, better yet, a shower cap, to prevent stains.
  • Regardless of your haircolor, take some petroleum jelly or a bit of hair conditioner on your hairline to avoid product buildup.
  • Be prepared to avoid getting wet during development. No rain, sweat, washing dishes. No water. Even small drops will show up on your skin if it hits you while your tan is working.
  • Wear loose clothing. Either dark colors or clothes you don’t care about getting stained. We also go for darker colors the day after we tan, even once we’ve rinsed, just to be sure.
  • Sleep on dark sheets, sheets you don’t mind staining, or invest in a tanning sleep sack.
  • Use a blow dryer on cool or stand in front of a fan until you’re completely and totally dry before getting dressed.

How to Apply Self Tanner:

Do we recommend using your bare hands to self tan? No. Do some people do it with great results? Yes. If you do go that route, just make sure you wash your hands really, really well afterwards. Otherwise, we’d much rather go with any of these mitt options:

  • STEUGO Self Tanning Mitt Applicator Set (includes a back applicator: think how you use a towel to dry your back off from the shower or pool)
  • Beauty by Earth Self Tanner Kabuki Brush (you can combine this with a mitt applicator, and/or use it for contouring, ankles, feet, hands, and wrists)
  • Bronze Tan Self Tanning Facial Brush (go slow, blendblendblend, and use a little product at a time. You can always add more. Don’t forget your ears, and into your hairline—unless you’re a blonde. Then, just take it as close as possible without actually touching your hair.)
  • If you absolutely can’t stand the idea of using anything but your hands for application, then try latex salon gloves and make absolutely sure they’re powder-free.

How to Get Self Tanner Off Hands:

Okay, so you completely skipped our advice, or you had a few little splotches on your palms. Obviously, washing and using one of the scrubby options we mentioned on your palms will majorly help, but you can also take half a lemon, press it into rock salt (or table salt if that’s all you have), and scrub your palms gently. Be super careful of papercuts or hangnails, of course.

A Note on ‘Color Guides’:

Many self tanners include a color guide. It’s a non-staining tint added to the formula so you can see where the product is and where you need to add more. It is not the color you will end up with. It’s designed to be seen, not always to look perfect. You might see greenish, ashy, or orange tones in it, but don’t let that scare you. It’s just the color guide. It will rinse off in the shower, so when you see that color going down the drain, again, it’s not your actual tan. Color guide only. Okay? Okay.

So now that we’ve covered all the self tanning secrets, let’s get to the good part.

St. Tropez Express Self-Tan

Bottle of St. Tropez self-tan
St. Tropez

This one’s for those of us who are in a hurry to get our glow on. St. Tropez Express Self Tan develops in just 1-3 hours. This beauty is at the top of the list of best self tanner, even among its 6-8 hour cousins. You can customize your color, thanks to the darker-as-it-develops formula, so keep it on for 1 hour for a light glow, 2 hours for a medium natural tan, and 3+ hours for a rich, dark tan.

The St. Tropez Express Self Tan has a warmer brown base color, so if your skin leans to extremely fair or you have red undertones, you might want to do a patch test first to make sure it doesn’t develop into a color that appears reddish or muddy. Did we mention St. Tropez is Ashley Graham-approved and lasts up to a full week? We thought you’d like that.

Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam

Bottle of Bondi Sands tanning foam
Bondi Sands

Aussies know a thing or two about tanning, so it’s no surprise Bondi Sands is a leader in the best self tanner department. Available in Light/Medium, Dark, and Extra Dark, it’s lightweight and has a scent that’s more coconutty than chemical. Bondi Sands is also formulated with aloe to help moisturize your skin. It has a green base, but don’t let that scare you. Self tanners with green/green-blue bases don’t put you at risk for turning orange at all, regardless of your skin tone.

Just like on the color wheel, green hues neutralize red and orange shades. The result is an olive brown tan once you rinse it off, but don’t be surprised if the guide color makes your skin look green as it develops! Similar to what happens when you color your hair, what you see during development isn’t what you’ll end up with. Trust the process (and do a patch test if you’re using a formula for a new time). Bondi Sands can be washed off in an hour, but leaving it on up to 6 hours gives you the full effect.

Coco & Even Sunny Honey Bali Bronzing Self Tanning Mousse

bottle of coco & eve self tanner
Coco & Eve

If you’re sensitive to scent, or would just prefer to avoid that classic self tan smell, Coco & Eve Self Tanner actually smells good! It has a tropical mango and guava scent that makes it pleasant to have on and pleasant to be around (no complaints from your fam!) while it develops. That’s not where the benefits end, though. Coco & Eve moisturizes, dries fast, and starts developing in just 2 hours.

Coco & Eve Self Tanner actually has a grey-green base, so not only does it eliminate red and pink tones, the grey color helps to create a really rich color (it also means you might have an ashy look as it develops, but like we always say, it’ll wash off, so trust the process). It also works really nicely to blur any imperfections so your color is even. As a bonus, Coco & Eve has a sunless tanning kit that includes their velvety tanning mitt (honestly one of the best we’ve ever used), a kabuki brush for your hands, feet, and face, and the tanning mousse.

Coco & Eve Sunny Honey Bali Bronzing Self Tanning Mousse
Formula: Non-sticky mousse
Development Time: 2 hours-overnight (if you’re a first-timer or very fair, Coco & Eve recommends rinsing after 2 hours to determine your ideal developing time)

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse

bottle of Jergens self tanner
Jergens

Jergens has been a big name in self tanning for years, thanks to their Natural Glow 3-Day Gradual Self Tanning Moisturizer that launched in 2005. Don’t want to wait 3 days? We don’t blame you.  Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse is almost as fool-proof as their gradual lotion formula. It develops instantly and darkens gradually over the hours following into a gorgeous summery color.

Another major bonus? It dries in 60 seconds. If you know anything about self tanning, you know that it can take so long to dry, so a minute? We’ll absolutely take it. Jergens Self Tanner is also incredibly affordable at under $15. For someone who’s new to sunless tanning at home, it’s an awesome option for starting out! It has a neutral brown base that complements most skin tones without orangey results. This one is also a bit more subtle than other options, though it can be reapplied the next day for additional color.

Beauty by Earth Self Tanner Lotion

bottle of beauty by earth self tanning lotion
Beauty by Earth

Organic aloe vera, shea butter, and botanical extracts, and no harmful additives and dyes make Beauty by Earth Self Tanner a great choice for natural tanners. It’s a natural formulation that includes lean ingredients you can feel good about. Although it does have a warm base color, it’s derived from sugar-beets, so it doesn’t react with your skin in a way that results in an orangey tan.

Because it’s a lotion form, it’s exceptionally hydrating, courtesy of coconut oil, and doesn’t have any funky smell at all. While it doesn’t have a color guide, it goes on white, so you’ll know where to rub it in, and you won’t risk staining your sheets, clothes, or towels as it develops! Beauty By Earth Self Tanner is also designed to be used on your face if you want, even if you’re acne-prone. This is another buildable tanner, so add another application if you don’t feel dark enough.

Formula: White-to-clear lotion
Development Time: 8 hours
Color: Fair to Medium, Medium to Dark

b.tan disco candy tan!

bottle of b.tan self tanner
b.tan

b.tan has a huge range of super popular self tanners, ranging in color from Dark, Darker, to Darkest Possible. There are so many options, it’s hard to pick the best in the collection, but disco candy tan! is one of their best sellers, and for good reason. Not only do you get a candy-scented dark tan, it lasts! disco candy tan’s claim to fame is that it’s sweat-proof and transfer-resistant, so this is the self tan that goes as hard as you do.

Although it falls into the Darkest b.tan category, you can adjust your color: rinse it after just 1 hour if you want a more subtle color, or leave it on 4+ hours to head into Darkest territory. b.tan is another extremely affordable brand that doesn’t compromise on your results.

Loving Tan 2 Hour Express Mousse

bottle of Loving Tan self tanner
Loving Tan

The self tanner that took social media by storm, Loving Tan self tanner is loved by influencers and non-influencers alike. Their 2 Hour Express Mousse is one of their hero products, offering a seriously rich tan in very little time. When we say ‘seriously rich tan’, we mean it. Available in Medium, Dark, and Ultra Dark, Loving Tan self tanner is ideal for intermediate and experienced-level tanners. Even the Medium is a deeper color than others we’ve used, so it’s best left to those of us who have a good idea of how we like our self tans to look, or if you’re craving a truly dark glow. It’s not one you want to experiment with your first time.

Another green-based formula, as dark as you may get, you’ll still skip the orange (but don’t freak out when you see the color guide; it’s definitely a reddish brown). Although, yes, with any self tanner, blending during application is extremely important, with the Loving Tan 2 Hour Express Mousse, it’s imperative. It dries and sets super fast, so you’ll need to work quickly (another reason this is best suited for more experienced tanners) and in small sections to avoid streaks. You can rinse it off after just 2 hours, and your tan will continue to develop over the next 24 hours. Try to skip the moisturizers and oils during your development period, even after you’ve first rinsed off.

Bali Body Self Tanning Mousse

bottle of bali body self tanner
Bali Body

We’re headed into extremely dark territory here, folks, so we’ll say right off the bat: don’t use this one unless you’re prepared to be very, very dark and you’re comfortable with your self tan application skills. Dark tans make mistakes more obvious, so if you don’t apply it correctly, it’ll show. But, if you’re ready to go for the gold(en), Bali Body Ultra Dark Self Tanning Mousse is one you should reach for.

Bali Body self tanner is a deep (deep!) tan with a green base that’s even suitable for sensitive skin! Chamomile extract, antioxidant coffee seed extract, and and pomegranate extract all work together to hydrate and soothe more sensitive skin types. Similar to other super deep self tans, the color guide is almost a chocolate color, but it won’t be your end result.

Tanologist Express Self Tan

bottle of tanologist self tanner
Tanologist

Keeping it clear is Tanologist’s specialty. Their Express Tan water-to-foam formula spreads and blends really easily, and it’s a clear mousse, so you won’t have to deal with any color transfer onto your clothes, sheets, or furniture. Colorless formulas also help prevent clogged pores and dry skin since they have fewer ingredients. It’s also safe to use on your face.

But the clear mousse doesn’t take away from the great glow it provides. Tanologist Self Tanner starts developing in just an hour and deepens the longer you let it develop. Luckily, it’s not uncomfortable to have on—it’s not tacky or sticky. Keep it on overnight for maximum color and it can last up to a week!

MineTan Color Correcting Violet Self Tanner

bottle of minetan violet self tanner
MineTan

We’ve talked about green bases, but let’s take a minute to appreciate violet-based self tans. Not only does violet work in a similar way to reduce gold/orange/yellow tones (if you’ve ever used a violet shampoo to remove brassy tones in your hair, it’s the same concept here), it also brightens up your skin to prevent that muddy or shadowy effect that can happen with dark tanners. The MineTan Violet Self Tan Foam is inspired by the tan you’d naturally achieve from a Mediterranean vacation.

Another 1 hour express formula means you don’t have to wait long for your new color to take hold. Avocado and vitamin E oils keep your skin happy and we’re loving how fast it absorbs and dries, too! If the Violet version isn’t quite what you’re looking for, MineTan also offers Caramel, Dark Ash, and Olive.

MineTan Color Correcting Violet Self Tanner
Formula: Mousse
Development Time: Rinse with lukewarm water for only 45 seconds after the first house (or longer), and your tan will continue to develop for the next 8-16 hours (then you can take your regular shower again)
Color: Violet, Caramel, Dark Ash, Olive
Color Guide: Yes

Isle of Paradise Self Tan Water

bottle of isle of paradise tanning water
Isle of Paradise

Spray your way to an even tan! Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Water is a spray-on formula that’s so light and non-sticky, plus this application method makes it go by a lot faster than other tanning options. There’s also no smell or might-transfer-onto-everything tint.

Isle of Paradise’s Self Tanning Water is also safe for your face. Between washes, products, and makeup, your face (and hands) is the place you’re likely to notice a fading tan much faster than the rest of your body. A few quick spritzes at the end of your nightly routine a few nights a week will keep your complexion warm and glowy. Afraid of using a dark tan formula on your face? Snag a bottle of the next shade down and warm it all the way up with some strategic makeup placement.

Norvell Venetian Sunless Self Tanner Mousse with Bronzer

bottle of norvell self tanner
Norvell

Norvell is a professional tanning brand that can be found in tanning salons and used by tanning pros! With that in mind, you might’ve heard of their Venetian Tan formula; it’s super popular with paid tanning services. Venetian Tan is a purple based color that brightens, blurs, and keeps those reddish-orange tones away! It’s available in different formulations, but the mousse is easy to control and the color guide is excellent, so it’s one of our faves.

Norvell Venetian Tanning Mousse is created to mimic the tans you’d see on the French Riviera, so you can feel super fancy even if you haven’t made it on your dream vacation yet. These pros have also figured out how to virtually eliminate that self tanner smell and added in anti-aging and skin hydrating ingredients, too. Skip the tanning booth and get the same results at home!

How to Remove Self Tanner:

If you have any lingering tanning product on your skin before your next application, or a few mistakes happen, this one is big. There are self tan remover products out there that can gently clear your skin of any old, fading color, but they work best on older product. If you decide after 24 hours you don’t like your color, these products aren’t likely to work the way you’re hoping (and that’s why we always suggest starting with a patch test before loading up your whole bod).

For Your Body: We usually prefer going with good old fashioned exfoliation. Use a skin-smoothing mitt like this one, or those scrubby little shower gloves like these. You can also add an in-shower body scrub like this, this, or this. Do not use those mitts, gloves, or scrubs on your face. Do not. Do not. Please.

For Your Face: Since we’re absolutely not using body exfoliating products on our faces (right? right?), we like to opt either for a high-quality chemical exfoliator that you can apply with a cotton pad, like this one, or a gentle physical exfoliating scrub specifically designed for your face, like this one, this one, or this one.

You’ve probably asked your child’s pediatrician all about feeding schedules, vaccines, sleep struggles, and food allergies. Perhaps your little one suffers from constipation (or groan, the opposite), cries when you place them in their crib, or just had their first fever. While all of these are valid new-parent concerns, we’ve got some news for you. There are even more questions you need to ask your child’s pediatrician.

Luckily, Dr. Candice Jones, a board-certified, Florida-based pediatrician is here to clue us in. In addition to being both a doctor and a mom, Dr. Jones hosts the KIDing Around With Dr. Candice podcast and is the author of High Five Discipline: Positive Parenting for Happy, Health, Well-Behaved Kids. The next time you take your baby (or toddler) to the doctor, be sure to ask them about these six critically important topics.

Safe Sleep Practices

Sleep—rightfully so—is one the main concerns new parents have. Not only are parents downright exhausted, but the baby is, too. While many new parents focus on simply getting a little (or ideally, a lot) more shut-eye, it’s critical that parents understand and practice safe sleep practices. Dr. Jones reminds us that we must work to prevent SIDS, also known as sudden infant death syndrome, and she wishes parents would ask more about it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers SIDS-prevention guidelines. First, infants should always be placed on their backs. Their sleep space should be a “crib, bassinet, or portable play yard” that contains a “firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet.” Swings and carseats are not suitable safe sleep spaces. The baby’s sleep space should be free of any “loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items.” When possible, breastfeed the baby and “avoid smoking.”

Water Safety

As summer quickly approaches, you may want to enjoy the water with your little one, be it a sprinkler, a swimming pool, or a local splash pad. Don’t forget about bath time, too. The goal, of course, says Dr. Jones, is to “prevent drowning.” However, any outdoor water activities also bring on the risk of your baby getting overheated, dehydrated, or sunburned. Remember to ask your pediatrician about safe water practices in every sense of the phrase.

The AAP reminds parents that babies can drown in a mere one to two inches of water. Never, ever leave your little one unattended in or near water. Gather bath time supplies and have them within reach prior to bathing your baby, and always check the water temperature prior to bathing to prevent burns. Always check to make sure bathrooms (think, toilets—a bowl of water), swimming pools, and even large containers (examples: pet water bowl and coolers) are secure. Younger babies are immobile, but as they get closer to the toddler years, they become very water-curious.

After-Hours Illness

Any experienced parent will tell you that kids rarely get sick when it’s convenient for parents. Whether your kid spikes a fever on a weekend, a holiday, or late into the night, Dr. Jones wants parents to be prepared. So when exactly do you cal the pediatrician after hours? The threshold to call the after-hours line is different from doctor to doctor, so be sure to ask questions like: What (fever) temperature concerns you? What other symptoms warrant a call, such as lethargy or vomiting? What fever and/or symptoms require us to go straight to urgent care or the ER? Bottom line: When in doubt, make the call.

Johns Hopkins Medicine shares these guidelines for parents. Take your child to the ER when “your child less than 2 months old” has a fever of “100.4 degrees Fahrenheit” or above. A suspected broken bone, a child hitting their head (and showing signs of passing out or losing consciousness), a seizure, dehydration, fast and heavy breathing, or “gasping for air,” and any “gaping cuts” warrant a trip to the emergency room.

Growth and Development

Dr. Jones says that one question all new parents should ask their child’s pediatrician is: Is my child developing and growing well? She forewarns that parents shouldn’t “assume your child is doing well in these areas if your doctor doesn’t mention it.” As the parent, you know your child best. Dr. Jones points out that “early detection and intervention of developmental delays and any growth concerns should be addressed.”

She also shares that these can be “overlooked in busy clinics,” so parents have to be and stay aware of their child’s growth (height, weight, and head circumference) and development. One of the best ways to do this is take a notebook and pen to every appointment and take notes, especially if your child’s doctor’s office doesn’t use a digital record-keeping medical system that patients can access online.

Carseat Safety

One of the most confusing and mind-boggling issues new parents face is carseat safety. What was considered safe and acceptable when we parents were children is no longer ok. There are two issues to make sure you ask the pediatrician about. The first is to ask is: Can I leave my child in their car seat—and for how long? Remember, never, ever leave your child in an unattended car. The second question to ask is: Which carseat is best for my child, and what are the guidelines for making sure my child is properly secured in the seat? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers this detailed response.

Did you know there are four different types of carseats ranging from an infant seat to a simple seatbelt? The NHTSA’s car seat finder tool allows you to enter your child’s birthday, height, and weight to help you choose the best car seat. They also remind parents that it is critical to “choose and use the right care seat correctly every time your child is in the car” to keep them safe.

Parenting Quandaries

Dr. Jones reassures parents that “nothing should be off-limits” when talking to your child’s doctor about “the health and well-being of your child.” Questions about discipline, attachment, speech and language, eye and ear health, skin concerns, and even creating boundaries should all be fair game. You can feel reassured that your kid’s pediatrician may have resource recommendations, and they have the ability to make referrals for speech evaluations, for example.

No matter how many books promise to be an all-inclusive guide to raising a baby or toddler, the research and standards are continuously changing. This is why it’s important to not brush aside your “silly question” or concern and approach your child’s pediatrician with honesty and a willingness to learn. A great doctor will gladly educate you, and when they cannot, they’ll offer you a resource or referral. Of course, you can also access Dr. Jones’ podcast or read her book for ideas, but always bring up specific-to-your-child concerns with your doctor.

Ugly, but make it fashion. Ugly Christmas sweaters are here.

There’s nothing as iconic as the ugly Christmas sweater. Oh, sure, they started out being worn un-ironically (over turtlenecks and paired with a festive brooch, right? We know you’re picturing it now.), but they’ve become a seasonal staple that isn’t going anywhere. Have you been resisting this trend? It’s time to embrace it. Do you already have a collection of jolly jumpers? We’re ready to help you add to it. Either way, these sweaters are the icing on the Christmas cake (Yule log?). Parties, Christmas Day, casual Friday…you need one. Or two. Whatever.

Hilariously ugly to adorably snuggly, this is the ultimate sweater guide. Oh, and if you hate sweaters, or live somewhere that it just would be miserable to wear one, we thought of that, too. There’s tees, sweatshirts, button-downs, and even an apron in here. For adults, for kids, and for pets—we made sure to include anyone who needs some extra holiday style. And make sure to note shipping cut-off dates! It’s coming fast.

Disney’s timeshare program gets you loads of benefits for your Disney Parks visits

Are you what they’d call a “Disney family” armed with Mickey ears at any given moment? Or maybe you enjoy that annual visit to the “Happiest Place on Earth” with the grandparents in tow. There is a way to enjoy repeated Disney magic with extra perks—and it could even save you money in the long run. It’s called Disney Vacation Club and it’s been around for decades. But what is this fabled part of Disney fandom? Let’s peel back the curtain on the Mouse’s membership club.

What is Disney Vacation Club?

In a pixie-dusted nut shell… Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s version of vacation ownership. Essentially, it’s like pre-paying for vacations for years to come—and savings can be found in the long run for both annual and frequent visitors.

Members purchase points to redeem annually at any of the 16 Disney Vacation Club resorts. And it’s not just the theme parks—there’s the oceanfront Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, and even the picturesque Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort on the coast of South Carolina.

Maybe you prefer the sea over land or to explore faraway lands? This yearly allotment of points can also be used to travel with Disney Cruise Line, and other Disney vacations around the world, including Adventures By Disney, National Geographic Expeditions, and hotels at most international Disney Parks. You can also convert points and use them at non-Disney Vacation Club properties around the world.

By using a points-based system, DVC offers flexibility in both accommodation style and destination as a family’s vacation habits change over time.

How does the Disney Vacation Club work?

Based on travel preferences, you decide how many points you’d like to purchase, and this will be the amount that you receive annually throughout the contract. Points needed per stay are based on destination, room style, and date of visit.

New contracts start at 100 points, but 150 is necessary to access ‘membership magic’—Disney speak for special perks (more on that later). You can also have multiple contracts at different resorts, and members can also add points to existing contracts as their vacation desires change. There’s also the ability to bank points and borrow from the following year—allowing members to use up to 3 years of points in one year for a larger vacation.

Looking to try it out? You can rent points from a qualified third party if you’re curious about room accommodations. Additionally, a limited stock of rooms at Disney Vacation Club resorts are available to the general public for cash stays.

What are the top DVC membership perks?

Disney vacations are a pricy endeavor but membership adds a Dole Whip-level dose of sweetness to the deal—especially for families with young children. Unlike standard hotel rooms, Disney Vacation Club resorts offer the desirable comforts of home, like larger common spaces, dining tables, kitchens, and washer/dryer in-room units. Accommodation styles range from deluxe studios all the way up to 3-bedroom grand villas, ideal for the smaller family or a multi-gen trip.

For families with little ones, complimentary cribs and playpens are also available. Pining for a night out?  At Walt Disney World, Kid’s Nite Out is the top trusted child care service available in-room—and even arrives fully loaded with games, books, and toys.

What is Membership Magic?

One of the biggest perks of being a DVC member is what is known as “membership magic.” This includes exclusive member benefits, the flexibility to travel the world with your family, and theme park perks that cultivate a sort of community pride and yes, there’s even Disney Vacation Club merchandise.

Is your little one overstimulated? There are lounges in the theme parks available exclusively for use by DVC members. Available at Epcot in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park in Anaheim, these lounges offer a welcome retreat to cool off with ample seating and ports to recharge your devices.

Perhaps the crown jewel of perks, members can enjoy Moonlight Magic, a complimentary after-hours event offered several times a year. Disney Parks after-hours events, like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, are a fan favorite but can set a family back hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This completely free party offers unlimited treats (hello, all-you-can-eat Mickey bars!), rare character appearances, and shorter wait times.

Discounts further add value, and include everything from savings on event tickets to dining and activities. There are even special member cruises on Disney Cruise Line.

Who can get the most out of DVC?

Since you can use your points however you’d like, and switch it up year after year, there’s not one cookie-cutter qualifier for who can get the most out of Disney Vacation Club. With flexible accommodation types, comforts of home, and perks, it particularly appeals to families with children. The multi-gen traveling family can save up points and use them for an annual extended trip with its larger, multi-room accommodations, or the frequent visitors looking to do several smaller visits can spread out their points across the year.

Insider Pro Tip: Disney Vacation Club will offer the best savings for those who plan to vacation at least every other year and who prefer to stay in deluxe-level accommodations.

A look inside some favorite Disney Vacation Club properties:

Disney’s Old Key West, Walt Disney World

Disney’s Old Key West is the quintessential Disney Vacation Club resort and the one that started it all. Its colorful, charming Floridian-inspired grounds are expansive, with standout pools and dining, making this the type of resort guests want to hang around for a much-deserved break from the parks.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Hawaii

There’s not a theme park in sight at Aulani, a stunning oceanfront resort on the quieter western shores of Oahu. Here, Disney’s excellence in storytelling is matched with local flair and architecture for an elevated experience all its own. Its on-site spa and gourmet bites stand out while also featuring the comforts Disney fans are used to, like Dole whip and character sightings.

Disney’s Riviera Resort, Walt Disney World

For a taste of the luxurious life at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Riviera Resort carries an upscale feel complete with posh accommodations. Inspired by Mediterranean resorts around the French and Italian Riviera, it feels far removed from the nearby theme park but with plenty of Disney touches throughout. The grounds are gorgeous and it’s home to some of the best dining at Walt Disney World.

The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland

The newest property, the Villas at Disneyland Hotel has that classic Disneyland nostalgia combined with contemporary designs and upscale amenities. A stone’s throw from the theme parks, rooms here are inspired by Disney’s beloved animated classics, like “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Princess and the Frog.”

Our theme park expert gives some insight into the event so you can decide if it is right for your family

If your kids are into a bit of tricks along with their treats this spooky season, you may be considering a visit to the annual Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort or Universal Studios Hollywood. Select nights each fall leading up to Halloween, the theme parks known for adorable Minions and Harry Potter-fueled lands evoke a sinister feel. You’ll find everything from immersive haunted houses to roaming ghouls—all brought to you by the creative minds behind one of the biggest entertainment giants in the world.

Halloween Horror Nights has evolved to include many interpretations of the horror genre, from classic franchises, like “Halloween,” to current pop culture phenomenons, like this year’s “Stranger Things,” further widening its mainstream appeal and sparking interest in younger horror fans.

Tickets can set a family back several hundred dollars, so it’s only natural to be hesitant before taking that financial leap. Is now the right time to summon your budding horror enthusiast into your scream squad at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights? Let’s break down the event.

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

people scared at Universal Halloween Horror Nights

It’s first important to understand exactly what the event is. Halloween Horror Nights is a separately ticketed after-hours event that takes over the entire theme park—meaning it’s just about impossible to avoid the scares once you step foot inside. ‘Ghosts’ may be lurking in the shadows as night falls and a thick fog (albeit fake) descends upon the entire park. While it may sound frightening, the event carries a party-like atmosphere throughout.

Its cornerstone is a collection of immersive haunted houses based on iconic intellectual properties and original storylines dreamt up by Universal’s creative team. These large-scale walk-through attractions are akin to actual movie sets and feature intricate detailing, props, and of course, live scare actors waiting around every turn. This year features houses from beloved major franchises, including “Stranger Things,” “Chucky,” and “The Exorcist.”

Another major element is its scare zones, highly themed areas that guests must walk through and encounter live scare actors as they move through the various sections of the theme park. Live entertainment and themed food and beverage are the most approachable offerings for the horror hesitant and round out the event.

Who is Halloween Horror Nights for?

Universal Halloween Horror Nights

This event was created with the horror fan in mind. And while Universal recommends attendees be 13 years of age and up, no minimum age is required to attend. The live scare actors may look like they’re coming close to you, but they are never allowed to touch you.

With Halloween Horror Nights featuring a range of intellectual properties, like PlayStation’s “The Last of Us,” it taps into fan bases of all ages, making it a sought-after event.

How can you prepare your kids for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights?

kid at Universal Halloween Horror Nights
Carly Caramanna

At the end of the day, no one knows your kid better than you. Much like attempting thrill rides for the first time, this can be a difficult situation to approach.

“My oldest son, Avery, is 10 and is already asking to join us at Halloween Horror Nights,” shares family travel writer and mom of three, Tarah Chieffi. “I would love to share my love of HHN with him and make it an annual tradition, but we are planning to spend the next couple of years preparing him by watching scary movies and visiting local haunted houses.”

Josh Morrow has been an HHN fan since the ’90s, and the self-proclaimed horror fanatic has been bringing his now 6-year-old daughter, Sky, to the event since she was born. “Encourage and embrace it all,” Morrow shares. “Instill in them from the beginning it’s all just one giant fun spooky party.”

The family took a slowly-easing-into-it approach, and at age 3, Sky attempted her first haunted house at the event, one themed to “Ghostbusters” — and was hooked.

“Spend the first year letting them soak in the scare zones and shows,” Morrow adds. “Help them understand that the houses are the same just in much more thematic detail.”

Morrow also suggests splurging on Express Passes, Universal’s expedited line system that allows guests to cut the regular wait time, to reduce any pre-house stress or jitters. “Encourage them to try new things (even scary) but do not force them. We NEVER did and couldn’t have asked for a better result.”

After decades of attending the event, here are some quick tips:

haunted house at Universal Halloween Horror Nights

  • Your family might want to try dipping their toes first in the horrific possibilities. The best way to do this: an Unmasking The Horror Tour, available at Universal Orlando. Separate from the event ticket, this daytime offering is a lights-on, scare actor-free tour of select haunted houses, and can be a good way to get acquainted with the feel of the event.
  • Not all houses are created equal, with some leaning into the fun, kitschy element, while others may be downright terrifying eliciting jump scares. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the content of the houses if you are concerned. It can also prove helpful for newcomers to prepare by watching YouTube videos of house walk-throughs.

mummy pops at Universal Halloween Horror Nights

  • While the haunted houses and live actors are reserved for the evening’s events, there are some ways to get a feel for what your child can handle during the day. Spooky décor, specifically relating to the themed scare zones, will be in plain view during normal daytime operations and could be a good way to gauge your family’s willingness to try out the event.
  • If you’ve taken the plunge and purchased tickets but your kid ends up being too afraid to try the haunted house, all is not lost. Many of the theme park attractions are open and with most of the crowd flocking toward the horror offerings, this means the added bonus of shorter wait times for rides.
  • The event brings a new energy to the park with loud music and bright lights. Neurodivergent guests or those with sensory issues may want to prepare with noise-canceling headphones.

Cruise ships are getting bigger and better these days and Princess Cruises is here to play. Their newest ship, the Sun Princess, is set to debut in February 2024 and will feature the most over-the-top family activity zone ever seen on a Princess Cruise Lines ship plus reimagined kid and teen zones. Located on the top three decks of the Sun Princess, the new activity zone named “Park19” will feature simulated hang gliding, a two-story climbing structure, a splash zone, and even a hammock area for parents who need a little break from it all.

“Park19 as the name suggests is a new space created for all our guests, including activities to bring together multi-generational travel families in a location with spectacular views and fun outdoor activities for all,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “The new area was tailored based on guest feedback for more family and group activities spaces.”

Located on decks 19, 20, and 21, Park19 was envisioned for active guests and multi-generational families to explore and connect through inclusive and engaging activities, including:

  • Sea Breeze – Inspired by the dream of hang gliding but in a safe environment, the Sea Breeze is the first Rollglider on a cruise ship and takes guests high above to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and breathtaking ports of call. Using an overhead track, guests are seated and harnessed to this electric ride which reaches speeds of up to 11 mph during the 60- to 90-second experience that is also ADA accessible.
  • Coastal Climb – On this engaging climbing structure guests ascend from decks 19 to 20  through a series of obstacles. Once at the top, guests can take in the gorgeous views before sliding back down to the bottom.
  • The Lookout – At the top of the climbing structure, adventurers make their way to The Lookout, an open-air observation deck, to take in stunning 360º views from the highest point on the Sun Princess.
  • The Net – Harnessed above deck 19, guests are challenged to trek across unstable bridges, a z-shaped balance beam, and climb cargo nets.
  • Infinite Horizon – For those who love heights, leaning tilt walls cantilevered over the side of the ship allow guests to peer out from deck 19 and look down to deck nine and beyond.
  • Hammock Area – Another first for Princess, relaxing hammocks allow Park19 visitors to take a break from exploring to hang out with family and friends.
  • Splash Zone – A whimsical splash area with pop jets and a beautiful water sculpture offers a refreshing and relaxing area to chill.
  • Recreational Court – From ping pong, shuffleboard, Xponential Fitness classes, and morning meditation, a rotation of sports and wellness options will be offered to guests in this multifunction sports court.
  • Jogging Track – A refreshing open-air track allows guests to walk, jog or run at their own leisure and pace, with 6.7 times around the track equaling one mile.

Kids will also be thrilled to see all the excitement coming to the youth and teen centers on decks 6 and 7. These complimentary areas include:

  • Firefly Park – This family center is a place to play together or drop kids off for a program of art projects, theme parties, and group games. Firefly Park also invites families with babies and toddlers, ages six months to three, to crawl and engage their senses with a dedicated play area. After-hours group babysitting is available from 10 pm – 1 am for $5 per hour, for ages three – 12.
  • Neon Grove (tweens) and The Underground (teens) – Located on deck seven, two separate areas offer an inviting space for tweens and teens to hang out, socialize, and just have fun. Both spaces feature colorful, comfy sofas and chairs for lounging, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles, plus air hockey, foosball, and skeeball. Program activities for these age groups include ship scavenger hunts, movie nights, friendly competitions, and dance parties.

“These expanded offerings give younger cruisers plenty to explore and enjoy aboard Sun Princess, creating an even more family-friendly experience with something for everyone regardless of age,” Padgett added.

The 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will set sail for the Mediterranean and Caribbean beginning in February 2024.

Got little night owls at home? Consider taking them to these kid-friendly after-dark activities throughout San Diego

San Diego offers so much family fun during the day (not to mention free family fun!) that parents often sleep on nighttime activities, literally! Instead of sticking to your regularly scheduled bedtime routine, why not treat your little monkeys jumping on the bed to an after-dark adventure! We’ve rounded up a bunch of kid-friendly things to do in San Diego at night with family, from drive-in movies to roller rinks. And if neon lights aren’t enticing enough, many of the best San Diego night activities for kids are outdoors—and under the stars! Read on to plan an evening out on the town with your little night owls.

1. Lace up and Hit the Roller Rink

Roll it out with the whole family in the evening at Skateworld, a family run business that prides itself on creating an enjoyable, safe space for skaters to move and groove, no matter what age—or what time! With skate sessions for all ages, skate school, and other roller sports, there is something for everyone! And you can’t beat the trip down memory lane: Parents, show your kids your favorite moves from when you were little. You’ll find disco lights, great music, and lots of laughs.

Insider Tip: Be sure not to show up for a late-night skate with the little ones on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. From 8-11 p.m., those nights are adults only.

All sorts of nighttime adventure awaits at this beachside carnival. Twirl around in the ice cream cone-themed pods on the Tilt a Whirl or defy gravity and take a dive on Zero Gravity, the popular space-themed ride.

Insider Tip: Tag, you’re it! Don’t sleep on laser tag at Belmont Park: Little game players love tagging each other in the foggy darkness lit up with laser lights, and parents can appreciate how the laser vest must fit comfortably to play.

4. Make S’mores on the Beach

No need to pack up the towels and sand toys just because the sun is setting. Instead, break out the marshmallows and skewers for s’mores beachside! Many beaches have fire pits available on a first come, first serve basis, including Coronado Beach and San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff. Fires have to be out by midnight, but the little ones will be fast asleep by then.

Pride 2023 means parades, drag performances, museum events for families, and so much love

June is Pride Month in NYC (and everywhere!) and the city is ready to celebrate. The official and legendary NYC Pride Parade for 2023 is on Sunday, June 25. (If you and the kids don’t like crowds, maybe steer clear. It gets packed.) But the parade is far from the only way to celebrate pride with the kids. Head out to youth pride events, drag queen storytelling, LGBTQ+ history tours around NYC, and much more. Plus, check out some of our favorite queer lit to add to your shelves. Read on for all the family-friendly NYC pride events happening around town, all month long.

Hands-on History: Queer Pride at King Manor Museum

This month’s free “Hands-on History” family event is themed all around queer pride. Make rainbow salt dough ornaments from the Victorian Era and learn about the symbolism that flowers held for the community during that era. You can also get your hands on a booklet by Margaret Middleton, that explores the possibility of queer inhabitants in the historic manor (though there’s no concrete evidence of this). Walk around the museum with the booklet in hand to explore the hidden history of the space.

Rainbows on the Hudson Pride Parade

Cap Pride Month festivities by getting out on the water with the Seaport Museum to join the LGBTQ+ sailing club Knickerbocker Sailing Association’s (KSA) 21st-annual floating parade.

Two of the Museum’s National Register-listed historic vessels will join over 30 vessels for the sail, which means you can join part of the parade on the 1885 schooner Pioneer or the 1930 tugboat W.O. Decker. The fleet of 30+ vessels will feature sails designed by Gilbert Baker who created the first pride flag and was a member of KSA.

For each Pioneer and W.O. Decker ticket purchased, the Seaport Museum will donate a sailing ticket to Ali Forney Center, which is dedicated to protecting LGBTQ+ young people from the harms of homelessness and empowers them with the tools needed to live independently.

Want to enjoy the parade from shore? No problem! The procession of vessels is expected to sail past the Seaport Museum between 3-3:30pm and anyone can come to Pier 16 to cheer them on. While on the Pier, you are invited to browse and support the Hester Street Fair Pride Market, which will feature all queer-owned or -operated businesses.

For a Library Filled with Pride

In addition to pride parades and street fests, there are other ways to open the age-appropriate lines of communication with your children about the LGBTQ community—and acceptance of all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, and sexuality differences. We recommend browsing one of our favorite NYC independent bookstores for kids for books dedicated to diversity and acceptance. These reads are a great place to start.

“And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, illustrated by Henry Cole
This classic is based on the true story of Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins who formed a pair at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. This charmingly illustrated children’s book tells the story of what happens when the two are allowed to adopt an egg.

“PRIDE: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag” by Rob Sanders
Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Rainbow Pride Flag comes a picture book that tells the empowering true story about how the flag came to be. From its start in 1978 with social activist Harvey Milk and designer Gilbert Baker to its role spanning the globe today, you’ll hear a story of love, hope, equality, and, of course, pride.

“A Tale of Two Mommies” and “A Tale of Two Daddies” by Vanita Oelschlager
Both of these stories are great reads for ages 4-8 and allow us a peek inside the conversation between kids who are curious about one friend’s two mommies and another’s two daddies. They’re both perfect for introducing kids to same-sex families that are becoming increasingly common to see in society.

“This Day in June” by Gayle E. Pitman
Show your kids the beauty of the pride parade without ever leaving your house. This picture book perfectly captures the diversity, exuberance, and, well, pride on display and provides a solid springboard into a meaningful conversation. As a bonus, this book includes a reading guide chock full of facts about LGBTQ history and culture.

“Princess Princess Ever After” by Kay O’Neill
This graphic novel is an excellent book for the tweens and pre-teens in the family. It turns the theme of the traditional fairy tale on its head, by introducing two princesses who are very different. When the brave princess saves the kind-hearted princess, they set off on an adventure that leads to self-discovery and a budding (kid-friendly) sapphic romance. Beautifully illustrated, this book is an exploration of what it means to be yourself, no matter what society expects.

“Welcome to the Family” by Mary Hoffman
Explores one element of its prequel, “The Great Big Book of Families,” which is the arrival of new members into a family. Written with a humorous tone, you’ll have an opportunity to light-heartedly explore all the different ways a baby or child can become a member of a family—natural birth within a nuclear family, adoption, fostering, and same-sex families—while sending the message that all families are special and equal.

“The Family Book” by Todd Parr
Children are introduced to an array of families through whimsical, colorful illustrations.  Pages are full of silly examples of differences (i.e.: some families like to be messy, some like to be clean), plus serious topics like adoption, same-sex relationships, and single parenting.

“It’s Okay to Be Different” by Todd Parr
Similar to “The Family Book,” Parr reinforces the need for acceptance of individuality through repetition and fun and colorful drawings. He mixes big ideas (“It’s okay to have different dads”) with random silliness (“It’s okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub”).

“King and King” by Linda de Haan
In this fairytale, a prince must find a mate to help rule the kingdom so the Queen can retire. While being introduced to a series of princesses, the prince meets a suitor’s brother and it’s love at first sight. Collage-style illustrations are bright, colorful, and altogether engaging.

“10,000 Dresses” by Marcus Ewert
Bailey loves dresses in all the colors of the rainbow. Dresses that sparkle, that shine, that twirl. His parents, however, are in his ear to remind him that he’s a boy and boys don’t wear dresses. In comes Laurel, a friend that shows him that it’s okay to be whoever he wants to be. This is an inspiring friendship story that any kid can relate to—but especially those who refuse to conform.

“This Is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids” by Dannielle Owens-Redi and Kristin Russo
Have a child who recently came out or is early on in the stages of questioning their sexuality? First off, congratulations that you’ve created an environment where your child feels open enough to talk about those feelings. Next up? This book. Written in Q&A format, it’s a go-to resource for parents committed to understanding and being the best support possible for their child. The authors share insight on everything from the emotional to the practical topics, peppered with real-life experiences of gay kids and their parents.

Additional reporting by Mimi O’Connor

It is officially summer here—and as a mom, I have had it! This summer, I am taking a stand and declaring that this summer is for every mom bod out there, and it will be the summer that we wear the DAMN bathing suit!

Rock that Mom Bod

I understand how self-conscious it is to be a mom—believe me!  I see young twenty-somethings at the beach that look like they stepped out of a photoshoot as opposed to our day at the beach that involved a million “necessities,” a toddler who threw a tantrum and not one moment to enjoy my beer since I’m not only mom, I’m doubling as a lifeguard, too.

I, too, was once a young twenty-something who arrived at the beach without a care in the world. In fact, if my college self saw me in a two-piece today, she would probably tell me to rock the one-piece instead. But my college self was so naive and thought that her body could take anything (honestly, it had survived way too many nights of tequila shots and Natty Light).

What my college self didn’t know were all the amazing things that my body would be capable of doing. I am still in awe that my body could create and carry a beautiful smart little girl in just 42 weeks. And then, after 22 hours of labor and an emergency c-section, it would bounce right back to take care of this small, delicate newborn. And still, throughout her first year of life, my mom bod could provide the sole form of nutrition to that little girl—and even a little extra to donate to babies in need. My body could survive off very little sleep, be drained to the point where I thought I had nothing left—and then give more.

Our bodies are truly amazing in what we can do, not only as moms but as women.

Wear the Damn Bathing Suit

I know that as a mom, I am guilty of trying to hide the stretch marks, baby weight and c-section scars and shelf when in all honesty, I should rock them as the battle scars they are. These marks and parts of our body that we deem are unsightly are actually signs of our body’s strength—proof that our body can do anything.

Moms deserve to wear the damn bathing suit—and feel as beautiful as our children see us. Rock the c-section scars, stretch marks and baby weight as you chase after your wonderful children in the ocean.

Wear the damn bathing suit so you don’t miss out on time with your family. Rather than sit on the side of the pool fully-clothed worrying about the size of your thighs, put on your bathing suit and play Marco Polo in the pool with your kids. Teach your littles how to do cannonballs. Make memories with your family rather than sit on the sidelines and watch memories being made around you.

The truth is, your kids won’t remember your stretch marks, baby weight or the c-section shelf. Your kids will remember the afternoon you spent building the largest sandcastle they have ever seen or those morning swims at the neighborhood pool.

Maybe if all of us moms got out this summer and wore our damn bathing suits, it would help encourage other moms to get out there and do the same.

We only get so many summers with our kids, let’s not waste them worrying about how we look—instead, let’s just wear the damn bathing suit.
