As flowers are starting to poke out of the newly thawed ground, so do a bunch of spring festivals. On this year’s list, we’ve got a baker’s dozen of favorite festivals, some of which have not been in-person since before the pandemic. From tulips to cherry blossoms and sheep to shenanigans, there is something on our list that will appeal to not only the little guys but moms and dads too. Most of these events are free to boot!
Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival

The Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival is Seattle Center's oldest in the Festál series. The festival was inspired by a gift of 1,000 cherry trees sent to the city from Japan's former Prime Minister, Takeo Miki, commemorating America's bicentennial and the lifelong friendship between Japan and Washington State. Since then, the festival has been dedicated to increasing the understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. It features ikebana, martial arts demonstrations, tea ceremonies, kimono dress-up, children's activities, koto music, taiko drumming, and more.

Welcome the warmer weather and sunshine with a visit to the Washington State Events Center for the annual Washington State Spring Fair. Take in favorite fair attractions, including baby animal exhibits, carnival rides, music, entertainment, and, of course, amazing eats...can you say hot Fisher scones?
New this year: Nitro Circus: Freestyle Crew. This group of young, professional athletes will be showing off their skills with BMX, skate, and pit bikes. This adrenaline-charged crew hits the halfpipe ramp with some of the most insane action sports feats you’ve ever seen, all while the world’s best pit bike racers speed through the middle of the action. They will be performing during the first week of the fair. For the second week, enjoy Motorsport Mayhem with tricked-out monster trucks and cars smashing into other cars. You can even pay extra to get a ride in one of the monster trucks.
Other things to see include pigs that race, dogs that dive, chainsaw carving, BBQ playoffs, family-friendly concerts, jugglers, magicians, and "Fiesta Mexicana" celebrating Mexican Culture and the arts on April 23. Be sure to visit the many fun exhibits like the interactive learning area, The Farm at SillyVille where fruits and vegetables are larger than life, amazing displays and activities that will even impress parents, and end the mini trip with a free healthy snack on the way out. (We aren't kidding, this is one of the best free attractions at the fair.) Other great things to see include the hands-on KidZone and Tractor Tracks. And of course, there are lots of rides, music, and food to consider, too.

It's baa-ck! Sheep Shearing at Kelsey Creek Farm offers a chance for kids to watch the sheep lose their winter coats. Families can also enjoy wool-spinning demonstrations, tractor-pulled wagon rides, pony rides, children's crafts, animal viewing areas, and tons of other family-friendly activities during your afternoon on the farm. Food trucks will be on-site, too, so bring an appetite.
Good to know: There will be a free shuttle service available from Wilburton Park and Ride (720 114 Ave. S.E.) and Bannerwood Sports Park (1630 132nd Ave. S.E.). Costs vary for food and activities. But we're sure if you asked your kids, they'd say the farm amenities are what make this event worth the drive for Seattle families. They've got enough to keep your kids playing all day long (no joke) and it all starts with the Kids Courtyard Play Area. If you've got toddlers in tow, this is a great spot to be. But if big kids are in your crew, start in the back field where you'll find the wagon ride, cow train ride, "mega" slide, jump pillow, low ropes course, ziplines, wall mazes, human foosball, trike track, tube slides and a variety of unique and fun-sounding activities like Barnyard Ball Zone, Conk the Crow, Roller Bowler, and Gaga Ball. They'll be tired after a day on this gorgeous farm. When you need to refuel, stop by one of the many food booths to grab a bite.

Little ones of all ages will be busy with the non-stop fun of the carnival games, touch a truck, live entertainment (including magician Jeff Evans and The Reptile Lady), petting zoo and so much more. The whole town of Wenatchee will be buzzing from April 27 to May 7 with activities and events in the scenic valley to showcase what makes this town such a hardworking and close-knit community. The whopping 11-day festival (celebrating 104 years!) includes two parades (a youth parade and a grand parade), America's seventh-largest carnival with 25 rides and games, a 20-booth food fair, and live entertainment every day of the event. The festival also includes a three-day Arts & Crafts Fair with over 140 vendors, Tour de' Bloom, a three-day cycling event in the Wenatchee Valley, the Classy Chassis parade and car show, the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and the Confluence Health Apple Blossom Run.
Kids are center stage with their own youth parade that features over 4,500 children. Plus, Youth Day offers free face painting, rubber stamping, hands-on activities, funnel cake eating contest, and more.
Good to know: The festival's Stemilt Grand Parade marches on Saturday, May 6. Grab a curbside seat and see marching bands from throughout the Northwest, colorful floats, proud-stepping equestrian units, and dignitaries from many different Northwest festivals.

Knights and fair maidens gather together to usher in the magical month of May at Camlann Medieval Village. May Day was a popular holiday in the Middle Ages when villagers would enjoy dancing, games, feasting, and contests. The 21st Annual Festival for May brings the fun and festivities of springtime to the beautiful Seattle countryside. Catch a glimpse of what May Day might have looked like hundreds of years ago as you experience entertainment and craft shops, including garland weaving, wool dyeing, and blacksmithing. Psst! Get in the spirit by donning medieval garb (optional, but super authentic). Craft shops and booths open at noon, May Games and entertainment at 1 p.m., and the festival culminates with a colorful Maypole ceremony and selection of the Queen of May at 4:30 p.m.

Since 1971, Memorial Day Weekend in Seattle has been synonymous with the Northwest Folklife Festival. The 52nd annual four-day celebration of the evolving folk and ethnic traditions of the Pacific Northwest is commemorated through the arts and music. This year’s Cultural Focus is "Lagom" which is a Scandinavian term that speaks to the notions of balance. Celebrating 35 years of free family fun, the Lacey Spring Fun Fair has provided activities and entertainment for thousands of visitors over the years. It is one of the largest two-day festivals in Western Washington featuring two stages of live entertainment, arts, crafts, food, clowns (non-scary ones, we promise!), music, entertainment, a car show, rides, a circus train, bounce houses, games and more. You'll find 40 booths tailored for kids of all ages.

One of the perks about living in the Bay Area is that winter is a pretty awesome time—you can take the kids hiking one day and play in the snow the next. 2. Last chance to visit SFMOMA's Diego Rivera's America—its 6-month run ends Jan. 3). Here you can see the most in-depth examination of the artist’s work in over two decades, bringing together more than 150 of Rivera’s paintings, frescoes, and drawings.
3. Check out some of the Bay Area's most famous wildlife—there are tons of great spots for seeing what the sea lions, whales, and elephant seals are up to morning, noon, and night.
6. San Francisco has some of the most epic playgrounds around. Pick a sunny day and start checking off our list of 30 favorites, like the updated Panhandle Playground.
7. It's newt season! Also called orange-bellies, these adorable amphibians emerge during the wetter months of winter but just look, don’t touch—these guys are poisonous. Join a guided newt hike in Briones Regional Park or in San Ramon.

GrandFun Alley features rock climbing, bungee jumps an inflatable obstacle course (and more!) for action-packed fun. Live entertainment includes swing music from Big Band Northern Lights Orchestra and kid-friendly shows include a puppet performance and balloon artistry.
Free NYE Events at your Local Library If you're looking for a 12 o'clock celebration in the middle of the day, head to your local library where area branches are celebrating at the stroke of noon with crafts, books and dance parties. Each of these participating libraries is hosting a "countdown to noon," with the exception of MLK Jr. Library, which is hosting a wish-making craft.
First Night Alexandria Alexandria's annual event includes all-day entertainment featuring rising stars along seasoned performers. Celebrate with kid-friendly music acts at the Rockin' New Years Eve Party from noon to 5 p.m.. Primetime performances (6-10 p.m.) include a magic act by Mike Rose Magic. For the grand finale at midnight, look up for a spectacular fireworks display.
Rock Out with Rocknoceros Rocknoceros is hosting this countdown to noon at Jammin' Java for a totally kid-friendly New Year's Eve Ball. Come celebrate with a cup of sparkling apple juice and watch the disco ball be lowered on stage at noon.

Try your navigation skills at a world-record holding maze that (might) take you and the kids hours to find your way out. Or, for something a little less intense, check out the assortment of mini mazes created especially for shorter legs.

Webb Ranch: Haunted house inside the corn maze? Yep, this spot has that plus more! They also offer train rides, hay rides, pony rides, a petting zoo, a bird zoo and a reptile zoo. Weekend visits are by reservation only.
Arata's Pumpkin Farm: See if you can beat the Minotaur's Labyrinth two-acre hay maze! A visit to Arata’s Farm in the Bay Area's pumpkin capital, Half Moon Bay, is a whole day event with train rides, a petting zoo, pony rides and more. Combine all the attractions in an all-access pass or pay for individual tickets but make sure to take a pumpkin home.

G & M Farms: Nestled in gorgeous Livermore Valley, G & M Farms has a 6-acre corn maze plus an enormous pumpkin patch and fresh produce you can take home. Weekend activities include pony rides, a cow train, pedal cart and jumping pillows (think: large, inflatable pillow the kids can jump on till they’re tired).
Spina Farms: This spot is a South Bay tradition and for good reason—it has something for everyone. Pick a sunflower, get lost in the corn maze (according to the site, “This year our maze has doubled in size and features an all-new layout to find your way out of!”), ride their Spina Double Express Train for the whole family, let a pumpkin rip from their Pumpkin blaster cannon or let your littlest pumpkin have their own ride in their barrel train.

Gilroy Ostrich Farm is currently closed for renovations. Will update once we have more information. Gilroy Ostrich Farm: This spot is the only only one on this list that involves ostriches—and the largest farm of ostriches in the state of California to boot! Make sure to see the ostriches, get your pumpkin and let the kids run through the hay bale maze.
Swank Farms Fall Experience: If there were ever a one-stop shop for fall festivities, this would be it! In addition to a corn maze and pumpkin patches, you will find pig races, a hay jump, gem mining, bouncy houses, a jumping pillow and…. beer! Still looking for fun? Try the family-friendly Trail of Lights & Field of Frights which is a magically light journey through the farm.

Santa Rosa Patch: Not to be outdone by anyone, this 8-acre corn maze has two different routes so it's perfect for kids of all ages. The short route takes about 25 minutes while the longer route can take up to an hour with night mazes open until 10 p.m. on Fri. & Sat. This spot also has a pumpkin patch, inflatable jumping pillow, petting zoo, hay ride, u-pick sunflower fields to fill your day.
Good to Know: The corn maze closes 45 minutes before the pumpkin patch closes.

Petaluma Pumpkin Patch & Amazing Corn Maze: Farm animals, a bouncy house, pony rides and food vendors on the weekends will keep the entire family entertained. The 4-acre maze with 10-foot tall corn stalks and only one way out is open daily. If you're looking for something more challenging, check out the night maze—open on Fri. and Sat. nights (kids 15 and under must stay with an adult inside the night maze).

Cool Patch Pumpkins: Holding a world record for the largest corn maze, every year the corn maze is new and completely unique. This year they are honoring the hard work and dedication that it takes to be a modern day farmer. Did you know that in the 1800s, 90-percent of the US population lived on farms? Today it is around one-percent.
Whether your crew chooses to use a map as a guide or attempts to do it on their own, fun hours are guaranteed. Littles can tackle the mini-maze on site and enjoy the pedal cars.

Nicasio Valley Pumpkin Patch: We love this spot up north because it has 12-acres to explore plus a massively-fun hay maze for kids age seven to age 97, plus a hay pit for toddlers. Weekends include face painting, live music, and petting zoos—all of which will work up a big appetite for their on-site BBQ and ice cream.
Three Nunns Farm: A tractor ride (for a fee) takes your family to this beautiful property with corn mazes and a pumpkin patch. The kids can then be let loose in the five acre corn maze while a mini-maze promises to be more relaxing for the younger ones. In addition to pumpkins, U-pick and pre-picked produce is also on hand for purchase.
Dell'Osso Family Farm: This spot is about 90 minutes east of Fremont and totally worth the drive for a day of fall fun. Your daily wristband gets you into the massive corn maze as well as on other attractions like the hay ride, Dell'Osso Express train, tire pile and more. Upgrade your day to try out the ziplines and pony ride. Don't forget to come back here in the winter to ride the snow tubes!

Mountain Lake Park: This recently-renovated city park sits just south of the Presidio. The under three set can play in their own self-contained toddler area that only has one gate to enter and exit (essential for toddler containment). Big kids will enjoy using the stairs or the climbing wall to reach the top of the cement slide and then grabbing a buddy to slide down together. There's also a great rope climbing area with gorgeous views of nearby Mountain Lake. The cushy ground and ramps make it accessible for all.

Helen Diller Civic Center Playgrounds: Head to the Civic Center for a two-for-one playground combo that opened in early 2018. These two massive climbing structures boast innovative design and cushioned artificial turf for children to play. Multi-sensory areas and traditional swings provide kids with different ways to move their bodies. The park even has elements that allow children in wheelchairs to swing and play. Mia's Dream Come True Playground: A project many years in the making, Mia is a 13-year-old with severe cerebral palsy whose parents came up with a dream to build an all-access playground for their daughter and community to enjoy, located in Tennyson Park. The one-acre playground is almost entirely wheelchair accessible and boasts an actual Hayward Fire department fire truck and all-ability swings among many other play options. This playground is a dream for all!
Matteo's Dream Playground: This wonderful playground in Concord was spearheaded by mom Liz Lamach for her son Matteo who used a wheelchair due to a number of disabilities. Matteo's Dream has wide ramps to provide access to people in wheelchairs, along with many other features like a sensory garden, high-back swings and areas for spinning.
Heather Farm Park Playground: Walnut Creek’s All Abilities Playground is 30,000 square feet in size and was designed to fully address the needs of the whole child by intentionally addressing the physical, cognitive, communicative, social/emotional, and sensory needs of all children. The playground has the following features: shock-absorbent, resilient-surface pathways and flooring beneath all play equipment, structures and equipment with wider ramps, ground-level play opportunities, swing set zone with tot swings and high-back special-needs swings, sound and sensory equipment throughout, shaded play structures, providing more protection from heat and sun, and benches within the play zones, so parents can sit close to where children play
Athan Downs Park: Opened in 2013, Athan Downs was designed to bring kids of all abilities together to play and create memories and friendships. The playground includes many accessible and sensory-rich activities. Plus, with the extensive ramping system, kids using mobility devices will be able to get to the center of the playground action.
Roberts Regional Recreation Area: This East Bay gem near the Chabot Space & Science Center has an extra-large playground that all kids can enjoy. Fully wheelchair accessible, the structure has lots of educational stations: a map of the United States, tracing games and name that vegetable—all really great opportunities to engage with your child through play.
Imagine Playground: The City of Dublin has opened its new all-abilities playground, Imagine Playground at Dublin Sports Grounds. The playground was designed with the intent to provide a play structure and facilities that can be enjoyed by people with all kinds of special needs. Kids will love the music-making opportunities, swings, slides and more.

Magical Bridge
Magical Bridge Playground Palo Alto: Touted as one of the nation's most inclusive playgrounds, the Magical Bridge opened its Palo Alto location in April 2015 to pleased children and parents alike. With five different "play zones" to choose from, kids can swing, sway, spin and slide to their heart's content. The music zone was provided to motivate interaction, facilitate socialization and improve social skills among children. Pretend play is encouraged throughout the playground but especially in the two-story playhouse that is fully accessible to all children via ramps and bridges. Read more about the park here.

Magical Bridge Playground Redwood City: Parents were thrilled when this all-abilities Magical Bridge Playground opened in Red Morton Park at the end of 2020. You'll find all the elements of the Palo Alto playground that you love, plus more. Kids can head to the Innovation Zone to play the magical musical harp, and then head over to the tot zone area for some water play. Climb up the King Kong climbing ropes and slide down one of the various slides. Accessible swings, spinners for kids in wheelchairs and tons of other thoughtful features make this a great playground for all kids.
Magical Bridge Playground Sunnyvale: The newest Magical Bridges playgrounds is now open in Sunnyvale! Modeled after the other two Magical Bridges playgrounds, this site invites multi-generations and all-ages to gather at the playground. A sensory spin zone, Innovation Zone, wheelchair accessible swings and treehouse welcomes all abilities and all kinds of play. During the warmer weather months, water play will keep the kids cool while Hideaway Huts are perfect for anyone who needs a breather for a quick escape.
LEO's Haven: LEO’s Haven in Santa Cruz is an inclusive playground for children of all abilities. You'll love the swings, spinners and tractor slide—all with a farm theme. From its rubberized surfacing, adapted swings, and tactile features to its wheelchair accessible play structure and quiet entryways for those with sensory difficulties, LEO’s Haven was designed to be accessible and enjoyable for children of all abilities.
Rotary Playgarden: Donated by the Rotary of San Jose in 2015, this playground located within Guadalupe River Park aims to enable children with special needs to play alongside their siblings and friends. Right near the airport (with loads of planes flying overhead!), the park offers a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round (moved by kid power!), slides, swings and all sorts of kinetic art to get kids exploring. The entire play area is fenced for safety but there's not a ton of shade there so go on a cloudy day. Read more about our visit here.
John D. Morgan All-Inclusive Playground: Located on the Budd Ave side of the park, this newly opened all-inclusive playground is designed so that the sensory and physical needs of all kids can be met. A splash pad, diecast car race track, spinners, auditory play features and small climbing wall will delight all ages so pack a picnic and make a day of it!
Okay, Chicago. Let’s live every nice-weather day to the fullest, shall we? On the top of the list, dust off those bikes, grease the chains, strap on a brain bucket and get those legs pumping on a bike path. From the shores of Lake Michigan to the furthest reaches of the suburbs, here are our favorite spots to cycle as a family in Chicago.
What was once a former elevated train line is now Chicago's 606 trail. The 606 gives kids a sweet (rooftop) view of the city while also connecting six neighborhood parks at ground level with numerous art installations. The trail runs along the Bloomingdale Trail for 2.7 miles, between Ashland and Ridgeway, and has a total of 12 access points at approximately every quarter-mile. All access points are accessible for people with disabilities.

Morton Arboretum is a stunning place to visit no matter the season. The Arboretum has 9 miles of paved tree-lined roads that keep things nice and shaded on hot summer days and their always-cool exhibitions give you great excuses to take a break from pedaling.
Keep an eye open for their Human + Nature exhibit. The exhibit features 5 massive outdoor sculptures that use thought-provoking human forms paired with elements of nature to bring attention to the deep connections between humans and nature.
Chicago's Lakefront Trail is a combined-use path with an 18-mile bike trail and an 18.5-mile pedestrian trail. The southern-most access point is at 71st Street in South Shore, and the northern-most entry point is Ardmore in Edgewater Beach. Hopping on this trail is an excellent way to bask in the beauty of our city, as you get lake and city views and easy access to our beaches.
The North Branch Trail System offers 20 miles of unpaved and paved trails along the North Branch Chicago River, with an estimated total length of 36.7 miles. It's most notable for connecting Chicago to Glencoe's Chicago Botanic Garden and includes trail loops through ecological restoration sites with diverse wildlife. Couple this ride with a visit to Chicago Botanic Garden so you can stop to smell the roses. . . and stretch your legs.
The Forge: Lemont Quarries (aka The Forge) is a 300-acre adventure park featuring the largest aerial adventure course in North America. Along with ziplines, hiking trails and paddlesports, they have a biking skills course and pump track. Their setup is fit for new and experienced riders and they have bikes you can rent if you don't want to haul your own.
Besides the gorgeous Lakefront Trail, Chicago Park District maintains paths that run through many of the parks for walking, jogging or biking. A favorite is the 6-mile Major Taylor Trail that runs through Brainerd, Gresham, Beverly, Morgan Park, Roseland and West Pullman. Most of the bike trail is off-street and takes you through the Cook County Forest Preserve's Dan Ryan Woods and Whistler Woods.
You likely won't cover all 61 miles of the Illinois Prairie Path in one ride, but you can make it a goal to conquer it a few miles at a time, perhaps. This multi-use nature trail was the first U.S. rail-to-trail conversion in the 1960s and has access points in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. Most of the path is surfaced with crushed limestone, which is easy on little feet and bike tires and sheds water quickly.
