There are so many things to learn from the Barbie movie—and the unique heartbreak of moms is one of them

“It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong,” says America Ferrara, launching into the monologue that anyone who’s seen Barbie can’t stop talking about.

I expected the Barbie movie to be fun. I expected it to be funny. I didn’t expect it to validate so many feelings I have as the mother of a near-tween daughter—and speak to me so deeply. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)

There hasn’t been a movie in years that has drummed up the pop culture frenzy that Barbie has—and delivered on its promise. The movie is a moment in the social zeitgeist that won’t be forgotten, and there are so many things that justify the adoration: the seamless integration of feminist themes into a decidedly non-feminist franchise, the all-star cast, the incredible set. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie speaks to all manner of women—but if you’re a mom, the way her screenplay so precisely pinpoints the pain of being one will slay you.

The lion’s share of pre-release attention went to Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. But America Ferrara really makes the script shine as a mother who works at Mattel headquarters, sketching ideas for new dolls. The sketches magically come to life in the adjoining Barbie reality, where the thoughts swirling through Ferrara’s head become Robbie’s. It’s Ferrara’s struggles as a mother to a tween daughter that inspire the anxiety and thoughts of doom that upend the entire Barbie universe. These uncharacteristically Barbie thoughts transform everyone’s favorite doll from an idealist to a person obsessing over the idea of death… and cellulite. When she crosses over to the real world to try and “fix” herself, fate lands her in Ferrara’s car—and the two work together to tackle the patriarchy.

Ferrara’s anxiety stems from her growing daughter, who no longer follows her around, wants to play with her, or even seems to like anything about her. It inspires a very visible depression and anxiety—one that so many of us with children growing more independent can relate to. Ferrara’s daughter (played by Ariana Greenblatt) has no patience for her mother and visibly recoils at any attention she gives her. And Ferrara’s increasing frustration with the world and her place in it—as a woman and a mother—inspires the monologue that is going wildly viral for speaking to women everywhere.

“You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money because that’s crass,” Ferrara points out. “You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas.” She addresses how hard it is to be a woman—to always be expected to answer for men’s bad behavior and to constantly be grateful for any small nod in your direction.

But it’s her words about motherhood and the weight of always feeling like you’re failing that are so perfectly on point. “You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people… You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too hard,” she screams. “It’s too contradictory, and nobody gives you a medal or says ‘thank you’! And it turns out, in fact, that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.”

The fact that it’s this particular trio—Barbie and a mother and daughter—fighting the patriarchy—is so fitting. For so many of us, Barbie represents a vessel we poured our dreams into. The moment that we can finally share Barbie with our daughters is one that is etched in the souls of those of us who love the doll. Watching Ferrara’s on-screen daughter reject Barbie and her mother simultaneously is so relatable—we have to believe that was intentional on Gerwig’s part. And if it wasn’t, she managed to unknowingly tap into one of the most heartbreaking and rewarding parts of motherhood: when your child begins to “outgrow” you.

There are so many things to love about this movie: the brilliant way it flips the script on how we treat men and women, the uncanny comedic timing of Ryan Gosling as Ken and Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, and Barbie’s somehow totally relatable struggle of trying to figure out what she is meant to do. But if you’re a mom, prepare for some deep emotions to surface. Because as Barbie’s sidekick, Ferrara paints the perfect picture of what it’s like to watch your daughter grow—and yearn for her approval.

Sometimes they get it right

Is there anything worse than a book changing its cover art to coincide with the release of a movie? Any book purist will tell you, the book is always better. Except, when it’s not. Sometimes a book to movie adaptation is just as good: when casting is just perfect, when the scenes play out on screen just as they did in your imagination, and when you actually enjoy a film more.

Here are a few of those times. And frankly, in some of these examples, the adaptation is even better than the book.

The Devil Wears Prada

We could simply say “Meryl Streep,” and be done with it, but that incredible casting wasn’t the only thing that made the film adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada—we’ll say it—better than the book. The film adaptation was more daring; Andy (Anne Hathaway) hooks up with a super-hot author on her Paris trip instead of just flirting, Miranda chooses Andy over Emily to attend the fashion week trip (in the book Emily just gets sick), and the movie provides the closure the book didn’t (Meryl’s subtle smile in the last scene!). This movie is constantly on TV, and we bet there are many, many people watching it every time.

The Silence of the Lambs

'Silence of the Lamb's is a great book to movie adaptation
Strong Heart Productions

Is there a more perfectly horrifying film than The Silence of the Lambs? I saw this movie in 1991 when I was a senior in high school. I remember walking out of the movie theater and wishing I could immediately erase the memory from my brain—particularly the scene where serial killer Buffalo Bill lures his victim into his van. It seemed like something that could happen so easily, and it made the outrageous events that followed—serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) helping a young FBI agent (Jodi Foster)—somehow more believable. The perfect pacing of the film and the development of characters all aligned with the novel, making the adaptation just as good as the book.

Misery

Misery marked the second time Rob Reiner directed a movie adaptation of a Stephen King novel; the first was Stand By Me, based on King’s novel The Body. Frankly, both movies are a work of art. The screen version somehow manages to be less gory than the book, but the perfection of casting and location here makes the movie work so well. Kathy Bates plays a perfect Annie—a woman so obsessed with her favorite character in a book series that she essentially kidnaps the author to bring him back to life. Bates won an Oscar for her performance—and James Caan was perfect as her author victim, Paul Sheldon.

Fleishman is in Trouble

FX

Everything about the book Fleishman is in Trouble rests on the timing of realizing who the narrator is and whose point of view you should, as a reader, be minding. I was so skeptical that a television adaptation would be able to get this right, but this one did. Author Taffy Brodesser-Akner adapted the novel for the screen and served as Executive Producer for this perfect adaptation starring Lizzy Caplan as Libby Epstein (the reluctant narrator), Jesse Eisenberg as Dr. Toby Fleishman, and Clare Danes as Rachel. And yes, it was just as good as the book.

Big Little Lies

It almost isn’t fair to compare the book to the adaptation here, thanks to Laura Dern. Her perfect portrayal of Renata is alone enough to merit the claim that the TV adaptation of Big Little Lies succeeded in the almost impossible task of being better than the book it was based on. The way the TV show whittled down the main characters to focus on the perfect casting was also brilliant; the book had way more characters to juggle. Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley along with Dern, were a force of a group to share a screen. The perfection only lasted a season though, thanks to a producer shake-up in season two that led to some choppy editing and usurped the plans of the season’s female producer Andrea Arnold.

Interview with a Vampire

'The Interview with the Vampire' is a great book to movie adaptation.
Warner Bros.

Anne Rice herself wrote the screenplay for the 1994 film adaptation of her novel Interview with a Vampire. so it’s no wonder it was absolute perfection. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt and Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac. Paramount purchased the rights to the book before it was published in 1976—and it would take nearly 20 years to finally come to life on film. A young Christian Slater? An even younger Kirsten Dunst? Add a gorgeous and dark New Orleans for the setting and who wouldn’t fall in love with this adaptation? Cruise played a perfectly sadistic Lestat to Pitt’s ever-trying-to-reform-himself Louis, and though the book was met with less than stellar reviews, the movie earned immediate acclaim.

Practical Magic

If you’ve yet to dive into Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic series, what are you waiting for? Practical Magic follows the modern-day descendants of a long line of witches who’ve been cursed to never allow love into their lives. If they do, the people they love are met with a tragic end. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman played Sally and Gillian Owens so perfectly, even a devout fan of the books would be enthralled. And the location was to die for! The Owens house! That kitchen! And the casting was perfection for the rest of the characters, too. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest were perfect aunts, and by the end of this movie, you’d be convinced that magic is everywhere.

Where the Crawdads Sing

The film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing does an amazing job of staying true to the book, the one big difference of course being Kya’s pursuit by the police starting so early. But it sets up Kya being a first-person narrator so well you have to forgive the filmmakers for tweaking the timeline. Jumpin’ plays a larger role in the film adaptation, but the nod to all the racism he dealt with in the book is absent in the movie. But with so much ground to cover—the book essentially spans a lifetime—the movie does such a masterful job of drawing you into the suspense and larger questions of the book. This is a not-to-miss read, and the movie should be on your list as well.

The Leftovers

HBO

This HBO adaptation is based on the Tom Perotta novel of the same name. The premise: three years prior, two percent of the world’s population has vanished in an event called “The Departure,” and those left behind are tasked with wondering where their families are, how to move on, and why they were left behind. The book deals with the concepts of grief, loss, religion, and meaning so beautifully it was hard to imagine that an adaptation could be as successful, but this one is. The show follows the Garvey family and a network of their close friends. It starts as more of a supernatural mystery, but the greater themes of the plot (the search for meaning, humanity, and happiness) surface as the seasons progress. Justin Theroux and Amy Brenneman anchor the all-star cast.

The Godfather

You have to read the book! is a common response when someone says they love a film adaptation. Mario Puzo’s The Godfather is one of those books that’s been overshadowed by the success of the movie adaptation. Director Francis Ford Coppola’s version didn’t get lost in as many minor characters and peripheral storylines as the book, and by laser-focusing on the Corleone family, specifically Michael and his father, Don Vito, viewers are so invested in this family, they easily commit to nearly three hours per installment. Not to mention the that Godfather Part II has been on the 100 greatest films of all time list for decades and is known as the best sequel—ever.

If you’re anything like me—with kids who travel about as well as a trio of grumpy cats stuck in a cage together—you’ll do anything to make your journey just a teensy bit easier.

In my 13-year quest for the illusive “easy trip,” I’ve tried it all: I’ve shipped my luggage in advance to avoid the inevitable wait at baggage claim (when my kids are either sprinting wildly through crowds or experimenting with how far onto the luggage conveyer belt they can sit before anyone notices); I’ve used suitcases that double as strollers to keep by wandering toddlers close; I’ve bought a bevy of gadgets to entertain my kids on flights and long car rides.

It’s still hard.

So when I spotted an opportunity to make renting a car a little bit easier, I had to take it.

Turo rental car service

Turo, a peer-to-peer car rental company founded in 2009, lets you rent a car without the usual rental car tedium: There are no long lines at the airport to endure; no squeezing your whole family into a compact economy car because it’s all that’s left; no worries that you’ll show up at the counter to find out your car was already doled out to someone else. It’s just one car—your choice, down to the make, model, and color—waiting for you when you land.

But what exactly is Turo? How does it work? And is it actually better than a traditional rental car company, especially when you’re traveling with kids? Read on to find out more:

What is Turo?

Basically: Turo works like Airbnb, but for cars. Car owners list their personal cars (though many Turo hosts are seasoned pros who have a fleet of cars on the site), and customers sort through listings to find exactly what they want. The company operates in all 50 states across the US and in 10,000+ cities across the US, UK, Canada, France, and Australia—with rentals at most major airports as well as in pockets of residential areas across the country.

Unlike traditional rental car companies, Turo’s business model lets customers pick the car of their choice—down to the make, model, vehicle year (with options like all-wheel-drive, blind spot monitoring, GPS, child seats, and backup cameras) —and read user reviews to get some assurance on the quality before renting.

“In the last few years, booking with traditional rental car companies has been incredibly difficult due to supply shortages and cancellations,” said Turo Chief Data Officer Albert Mangahas. “It made people realize that they want the power of choice, convenience, and excellent service, especially when traveling with their families.”

Always wanted to drive a Tesla? Curious about what being a Mini Van Mom feels like? Turo is a good way to find out. With more than 1,400 makes and models of cars represented on the site, you can rent the car you’ve always dreamed of (or, at least, the one you think might make for an easy road trip).

“Turo provides guests with the opportunity to make their cars a memorable part of their vacation, whether that’s an SUV, minivan, exotic car, or electric vehicle,” Mangahas said.

As for the quality of the cars, it’s not like anyone can slap their car on the site and wait for the dollars to roll in. Turo requires that all rental vehicles be less than 12 years old (except for “specialty” cars) and must meet Turo’s safety requirements, including providing a record of annual safety inspections (cars registered in these states don’t need to submit a vehicle inspection, according to Turo).

How Does Turo Work?

Finding your car: Type in your destination and the dates you need a car, then select your preferred car type and features (like electric, family-friendly, pet-friendly, etc.) to view a list of available cars. Hosts that have the most experience and best reviews are listed as “All-Star Hosts,” which can give you a good idea of your chosen car’s condition and how easy communication will be with your host.

Adding Extras: Need an infant seat or booster? Snow tires? A ski rack? No problem. Search for cars that offer these extras and your car will be fully loaded when you pick it up.

Provide Your Information: Just like you want to trust your rental car—your rental car’s owner wants to trust you! Consequently, before you can rent a car, you need to give Turo your driver’s license information, photo, credit card information, and home address to verify your identity before you can rent on the site.

Book your trip: All reservations can be canceled up to 24 hours before your trip.

Picking up the car

This is where Turo really differs from traditional rental car companies. Instead of going to an office or building, Turo hosts can deliver the car to the airport, or you can pick it up at another prearranged location. I chose to have the host deliver our car to the airport terminal parking lot, so when we landed in Orlando, Fl., we just walked out of the airport and got our three-row car as if we were Florida natives! (Way easier than waiting 45 minutes at a rental car counter only to be assigned a sedan that would force my three big kids to sit next to each other in the back seat.)

How: Most Turo hosts will park the car with either the doors unlocked and the key in the glove compartment or with a lockbox attached to the underside of the car so that the renter can just get in and go. Some cars also use a remote lock/unlock system so renters can unlock the car from their phone.

Note: Some hosts prefer in-person exchanges—For instance, they’ll pick you up at the airport and drive you to your hotel before giving you the keys. This would be indicated on the host’s listing.

Checking In: When you get to your car, you’ll first need to verify its condition—and prove that you’re actually the one picking up the car (this prevents people from renting cars for others). For instance: I had to take a picture of myself in front of the car with my driver’s license in my hand and upload it to the Turo app.

The check-in process also asks that you upload photos of the interior and exterior of the car (including the mileage and gas indicator, just to show any pre-existing dents or scratches as well as how much gas was in the car when you picked it up).

Note: Since the check-in process relies on the Turo app, keep your cell phone charged! If your toddler has been tapping away at your phone the whole flight and you’re left with zero battery, you won’t be able to log onto the app to find out where your car is or how to get into it.

Returning the car

Similar to the check-in process, returning your car requires that you take it to the designated location (for me, it was the airport’s economy parking lot), upload pictures of the car’s interior and exterior (to show that you left it safe and sound), and leave the keys behind (I was told to leave the keys in the glove compartment and leave the car unlocked). Then… Just walk away!

If there are any incidental charges—like if you didn’t fill up the gas tank before returning it—you’ll be sent an invoice to pay. Additionally, if you left the car unreasonably messy (like, if your toddler vomited all over the seats and you left the crusted remains, or if you drove through a mudslide and your car now looks chocolate-dipped—you’ll be charged a $150 cleaning fee.

To put things into perspective: I didn’t have any problems with returning my 2020 Kia Sorrento, and that’s even with my kids snacking endlessly in the back seat.

Is Turo Cheaper Than Traditional Rental Cars?

At first glance, Turo is vastly cheaper than traditional rental cars—with prices starting at around $29 a day. Costs shoot up if you want a particular make, model, or year, and are dependent on the location, with the average price of a mid-size, mid-value car hovering around $40-70 a day.

When it comes to renting family-friendly cars, Turo also beats out traditional rental car prices. A Turo-listed 2020 Chrysler Pacifica in Los Angeles, for example, starts at $58 a day, while the same car at Enterprise LAX costs $110 a day.

That said, Turo does have some added costs that might make that divide a little smaller. Airport fees (if you want the car delivered to the airport), optional features (like car seats or bike racks), and a Turo “Trip Fee” (which ranges from 2.5% to 100% of the total trip price, with higher value cars having a higher trip fee), may make your Turo rental price not so far away from other rental car companies fees.

NOTE: We recommend buying Turo insurance, which starts at $14 a day. This is because most car insurance companies (or credit card policies if your card offers rental car insurance) don’t recognize Turo as an official rental car agency; consequently, they generally won’t cover you should you get into an accident while driving a Turo car.

The Takeaway:

I spent $331 for a four-day rental in Orlando—much cheaper than if I had rented any three-row car from Budget or Avis. I didn’t have to deal with anyone (except my kids) when I got off the plane. We just walked out of the airport, got in the car, and drove to our hotel. We were out of the airport within 45 minutes of landing!

The only real glitch in the process was that I didn’t get great WiFi at the airport parking lot, so I had a tough time uploading pictures to the app on check-in and return.  As for the car, I wasn’t blown away—highway driving was loud, the seats weren’t electric, and I couldn’t get Apple Carplay to work. But I hadn’t specified a luxury car or any specific features, so I wasn’t too perturbed by these things.

The car had three rows, it fit all of us comfortably, and it drove us safely to our destination (for less money). Success.

Pros of Turo:

  • Cheaper (generally) than traditional rental car companies
  • No need to wait in a rental car line with your kids!
  • Huge selection of cars lets you choose a particular model, make, and year
  • Plenty of family-friendly cars including SUVs and minivans at competitive prices
  • You can select specific family-friendly features such as car seats, bike racks, Apple CarPlay, etc.
  • It’s a great way to try out a luxury or specialty car
  • You can pick up your car at any time, even if your flight lands late at night (many rental car companies, by contrast, close at a certain time)

Cons of Turo:

  • Fees (insurance, trip fee, airport fees, etc.) can add up, making the prices comparable to traditional rental car agencies
  • The whole process is dependent on your phone/computer and WiFi signal (if you don’t have a working device, you won’t know where your car is and how to get it—or be able to tell the host where you parked it when you dropped it off)
  • You have to rely on user reviews to determine the reliability of your chosen car
  • The experience can vary significantly from one trip to another, depending on the owner’s (and previous reviewers’) standards of cleanliness or quality:
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before your trip, you’ll have to pay a portion of the trip fee (whereas some rental car companies don’t charge you at all until you show up at the counter)
