Tucked away in a lush landscape with beautiful flowers and tall palms that make you feel like you’re on a Caribbean getaway, The Grove Resort & Water Park Orlando is in a world of its own. With 878 two- and three-bedroom vacation residences that are perfect for families, the property blends the comforts of home with the luxury of a full-service resort. All units are equipped with full kitchens, full-sized washers and dryers, multiple bathrooms, and screened balconies. We loved that we could make breakfast in the room and head out without waiting in the restaurant.

Whether you’re returning from a fun-filled day at Disney World or a thrilling adventure at Universal Orlando, the resort’s sprawling grounds feel like a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of busy areas. We loved the mesh barrier around the patio to keep the critters away, which made sitting on the patio and taking in the sunrise or sunset extra special.

The Grove Resort & Water Park
The Grove Resort & Water Park

The entire resort is set on Lake Austin amid some of Central Florida’s conservation grounds. The Springs Pools, Surfari Water Park, Flip Flop’s Family Fun Center, and Lake Austin are all focal points of The Grove experience. Guests can also enjoy a selection of natural adventures at the resort’s Lake Austin Pier, a 24-hour fitness center if you still feel like a workout after a day at the theme parks, a children’s activity center, and four dining options available onsite.

What We Loved about the Grove Resort & Water Park

The Grove Resort & Water Park
The Grove Resort & Water Park| Claire Zlobin

The Grove is not just about comfortable lodging; it offers many activities that promise to keep the whole family entertained. The Surfari Water Park, a highlight of the resort, features a flowing lazy river, two towering water slides, and a sprawling zero-entry pool that is perfect for younger guests. For a more tranquil experience, adults can indulge in The Springs Pools, a quieter environment for relaxation and unwinding. There are two areas: one with a splash pad area for families with little ones and an area with deeper pools.

Cabana Rental
Renting a cabana is convenient if you plan to spend the whole day at the waterpark. You don’t have to go extra early to save a spot and have protection from the sun all day. The best feature of the cabana rental is that the servers come directly to you for your drinks and meals. There is cold water and a safe to store your belongings while enjoying the water activities.

FlowRider Double surf simulator
Get the adrenaline going, especially if you are traveling with adventurous teens and tweens, though this activity is a thrill for the big kids at heart, too. You can book a private 30-minute session for your family or join a group. While we were there, there were only a few drop-in spots available, so if you want to take advantage of this, it’s a good idea to reserve ahead of time.

Shuttle service to the parks
Planning a visit to nearby attractions is made effortless with the resort’s shuttle services to Disney World and Universal Studios. These quick and convenient transport options ensure that guests can enjoy their day without the hassle of driving and parking. After a day of excitement and exploration at Disney’s Magic Kingdom or Universal’s Islands of Adventure, returning to The Grove is like returning to a peaceful sanctuary.

Theme Parks Optional
If you have no plans to go to the theme parks, you’ll still have a fantastic time here; the Grove Resort & Water Park offers a full menu of onsite activities.

The Flip Flop Family Fun Center is a 7,000-square-foot state-of-the-art arcade with glow-in-the-dark mini golf. It is a hit with kids and teens. The center features arcade games, a glow-in-the-dark mini golf course, and a gaming station.

Explore Lake Austin

The Grove Resort & Water Park
The Grove Resort & Water Park

Guests can rent fishing poles or paddle boats to explore serene Lake Austin or play basketball or tennis on the courts. Seeing the alligators in the water is surreal, especially with water activities. We didn’t catch any fish when we tried; maybe the alligators already had them for breakfast.

Where to eat at The Grove Resort & Water Park

For dining, The Grove Resort Orlando offers various options that cater to all tastes—from the casual Longboard Bar & Grill at the water park, offering bites and drinks poolside, to the more refined atmosphere of Valencia restaurant, where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the resort’s scenic Lake Austin. The resort also boasts the Alfresco Market, a convenient spot for grabbing groceries, quick snacks, and Starbucks coffee, perfect for those on-the-go mornings before hitting the parks. Check the calendar for events like family karaoke nights that often happen near the Valencia restaurant on weekends.

Tips for making the most out of your stay at The Grove Resort & Water Park

The resort is huge, though it doesn’t feel like it since there are separate buildings; it only feels like it if you make a wrong turn and wind up on the other side of the resort. Orient yourself and your kids in the water park or lobby on the first day, especially if you will have the kids coming and going from the room on their own.

Even though it’s only 6 miles to the theme parks, traffic in Orlando is horrid, and it will take a while to get there, so keep this in mind and plan for this extra time on the shuttle according to your child’s temperament.

The waterpark’s line starts about 30 minutes before opening. If you have littles who will be fussy waiting in line, a good idea is to send one adult to secure your seats if you want to sit in a particular place and then join once they are in. You can pay for premium poolside seating to avoid waiting in line altogether. There is no shortage of pool chairs and seating, so if you don’t want to wake up and wait in line, you definitely don’t have to.

With multiple shuttle times to the theme parks, you can book your shuttle ahead of time through the Florida Bus Service; this is a free service. If you are going during peak seasons, such as spring break, we suggest you book the shuttle as soon as you book the trip.

Walt Disney World Orlando
Walt Disney World in Orlando is famous for its theme parks, such as Magic Kingdom and Epcot, numerous resorts, water parks, and many dining and shopping experiences. It’s a premier destination for family fun and magical experiences in the heart of Florida. The park hopper is the best option if you plan to do multiple parks in one day. We suggest starting at Magic Kingdom and ending at Epcot, as Magic Kingdom is the busiest. We found Epcot’s international food and drink area, relaxing gardens, and kids’ playgrounds a great way to end a busy day.

Universal Orlando
Universal Orlando Resort is a thrilling destination for families, featuring dynamic theme parks, including Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and the water-themed Volcano Bay. It offers immersive experiences with favorite characters, exhilarating rides, and interactive shows, making it an ideal spot for adventure and entertainment.

The rollercoasters are very popular, and we found wait times to be over one hour for the VelociCoaster even with the express pass, and we did not go during the peak season like Spring Break. If it’s in your budget, we think the express pass is a good investment to avoid spending hours in line (one of the Harry Potter lines was a 4-hour line)

ICON Park
ICON Park in Orlando is an entertainment complex offering a mix of attractions, restaurants, and shops. Highlights include The Wheel, a 400-foot observation wheel providing panoramic views of the city, plus museums, an aquarium, and live entertainment.

If it fits your schedule, we recommend doing the wheel near sunset so you can experience the sunset from 400 feet. It’s a great experience and beautiful views.

Crayola Experience
Crayola Experience in Orlando is an interactive and colorful attraction where children can explore creativity through hands-on activities. It features over 25 artistic stations, from creating custom crayons to digital art adventures, making it a fun and educational destination for young artists and their families. Crayola is a good fit for younger children who love to create art. It’s a good way for parents to get a break while the kids are engaged in their creations.

Airboat rides
If you are feeling adventurous, airboat rides in Orlando offer an exhilarating way to explore Florida’s wetlands. These high-speed boat tours glide over marshes and swamps, providing up-close encounters with wildlife like alligators and exotic birds. It is a thrilling adventure for nature enthusiasts and families looking to experience Florida’s natural beauty.

Have a water fight, take a road trip, or just talk. There are so many daughter & mother activities mothers that’ll strengthen the bond

Between school, work, and keeping the family afloat, sometimes it’s tough for mother-daughter activities to come front and center. To help you keep that bond strong, we found 33 of the very best ideas. Whether your daughter is 5 or 15, keep reading to discover mother-daughter activities you’ve got to try at least once.

1. Play a game of basketball. Even if you aren’t the next Steph Curry—you can still shoot hoops with your daughter. Plus, it’s a great workout!

2. Have a spa day. Every mom and daughter deserves the royal treatment at least once. A soothing mask, manicure, pedicure, and refreshing cucumber water will make for a memorable day.

3. Write in a journal together. Sometimes talking about our feelings is tough. But using a mother-daughter journal to share our dreams and disappointments can be a great bonding experience (and a wonderful keepsake for the future).

4. Have a movie marathon. Pick a series of movies (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney), pop popcorn, and make a day of movies in your family room.

5. Go on a road trip. Nothing says togetherness like riding in a car for a long time. Create a playlist of music you both want, pick a destination, and start driving.

6. Set up and finish a jigsaw puzzle. A puzzle guarantees hours of quality time with your daughter.

7. Run a race. Whether it’s a 5k or a 1-mile fun run, train with your daughter and show her that girls can do anything!

8. Go out to eat. Pick a spot from our ultimate list of restaurants where kids eat for free.

9. Have regular mommy-daughter dates. Whether it’s a lunch date, a walk to the park, or visiting a local museum, you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to spend time with your daughter.

10. Pick a Pinterest project to tackle. You know all those crafts and projects you have pinned? Find a perfect one for a mother-daughter team and make an afternoon of it.

11. Read together. Whether your daughter is two or 12, you'll never forget the experience of bonding over words together when you read a book.

12. Set up a science project. Studies show girls lose interest in science by age 15, so start early and keep her engaged to fight this startling statistic. Try some of these classic science experiments at home.

13. Go to high tea. Find a fancy hat and get your pinkies up. High tea is a luxurious activity every mom and daughter should do at least once.

14. Volunteer or do a community service project. There are a lot of community activities for families. Pick an activity that will help mom and daughter give back to others while spending time together.

15. Schedule a professional photoshoot. Most moms have hundreds of photos of their daughters, and we all love a good selfie. But having a photographer other than yourself capture lasting memories is a gift you'll enjoy well into the future. We love Shoott, the company that connects local photographers with people who want their pictures taken.

16. Go to a fancy dinner. Make a reservation for a restaurant you've always wanted to try and have a date night with your daughter.

17. Have a water fight. Invest in some balloons and water guns and spend the day getting wet.

18. Learn to build something. Put your girl power into action, and perfect your building skills at a class through Home Depot or another hands-on workshop. There's no reason the hammer and drills should be left to fathers and sons.

19. Have a one-on-one conversation. We've got 47 conversation starters right here

20. Have a picnic. Pack a picnic lunch (or buy a delicious sandwich at a local shop) and find a pretty outdoor spot. Spend some time eating, chatting, reading, or playing together.

21. Bake a cake or cook a full dinner. You've probably enlisted your daughter's help baking cookies or peeling veggies. Take your culinary skills up a notch and attempt to create an entire cake or a four-course meal.

22. Travel to a new city. You can take a plane ride to another state or drive to the next town. Explore a new city with your daughter, and see what interests both of you.

33. Have a good cry together. Showing your daughter that it's okay to express her feelings is important. And, it's important to show her that you're human, too.

24. Take a hike. Find a trail to explore. Wander through your local park. Stroll the beach, head up a mountain, or discover the desert. Enjoying nature together may open your eyes to many new things along the path.

25. Go on a shopping spree. While it's probably worth saving up some money for this indulgence, an afternoon shopping spree is something every mother and daughter should do together.

26. See a play or musical. Dress up, have lunch, and experience a play or musical at a local theater.

27. Take a painting class together. Get artsy and do a painting or crafting class together. You'll love seeing your unique perspectives come to life on the canvas.

28. Go to an amusement park. Some moms like theme parks as much (or more than) as the kids. Spend a day at the Happiest Place on Earth, or explore the features at Universal Studios.

29. Have a dance party. Blast your favorite playlist and dance, dance, dance.

30. Look through old photos and scrapbooks. Before the days of Facebook, we kept our memories printed in albums. Share your old photo albums and scrapbooks with your daughter, and tell her stories about those special times.

31. Go thrift shopping or antique hunting. It's fun to hunt through thrift shops and see what treasures you can find.

32. Go fishing. Who says fishing is just for the guys? Find a local fishing hole and spend an afternoon casting a line.

33. Play a board game. There are plenty of games that are perfect for a mother-daughter afternoon. You can even take the game to a local coffee shop or park to make the time more special.

For SoCal adrenaline junkies, Knott’s Berry Farm has always been more of a day trip than an overnight staycation. But that might change now that the theme park’s adjacent hotel has spruced itself up with a multimillion-dollar renovation that has given a whole new look to the nearly 50-year-old hotel.

Once a blocky afterthought to the 57-acre theme park, the Knott’s Berry Farm hotel hasn’t always had the cache (or the exorbitant price tag) of, say, a Disney brand hotel, despite being steps from Knott’s most beloved attractions (open a window and you’ll hear the screams of Ghostrider’s victims). Yelp reviews have long complained of a “tired”  look and feel to the hotel’s hallways and guest rooms.

But dinginess be gone! The revamped (and slightly renamed) Knott’s Hotel now has a sophisticated farmhouse-chic feel, with all 322 of the hotel’s guest rooms having been fully renovated. It’s also got a redesigned restaurant, lobby, and meeting spaces. Even better? The bargain price tag is still there, so anyone wanting to get a theme park hotel experience can do it in style… and still have room for a custom lightsaber or two should they decide to tack on a day and go park-hopping elsewhere.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Knotts Berry Farm Hotel’s big makeover:

Joshua Sudock/ Knott’s Berry Farm

The Lobby
You may be 500 steps from the park gates, but step into the lobby and you’ll feel like you’re worlds away from the chaos. A cavernous space with just the right amount of warmth, the lobby’s rustic farmhouse decor is an upscale ode to Knott’s founders, Walter and Cordelia Knott, who started the Knott’s empire when they founded their boysenberry farm at the location that would later become the bustling theme park. Nods to the founders are everywhere, including a guest registration wall made of oversized replicas of the farm’s first jam jars, filled instead with fresh flowers and seasonal displays.

Joshua Sudock/ Knott’s Berry Farm

The Rooms
Keeping with the farmhouse chic, guest rooms are simple and clean (with not a Snoopy or Peanuts© character to be found). Think country guesthouse, bathed in neutral colors and natural wood, with handcrafted details like framed animal prints on the walls.

Got a brood? Queen rooms offer space for up to six plus amenities including a mini refrigerator and a sleeper sofa.

Joshua Sudock/ Knott’s Berry Farm

The Restaurant
At the new Thirty Acres Kitchen and Bar (the name is a nod to the original 30 acres of land that made up the farm), guests can enjoy a “modern version of the farm,” featuring a double-sided wrap-around bar that extends into the lobby. While the 300-degree bar will serve locally inspired craft cocktails and small plates, the full-service restaurant menu will offer distinct twists on traditional American cuisine, with signature dishes and menu items connected to the park’s season. It’s an upscale complement to the neighboring Mrs. Knott’s Fried Chicken Restaurant at Knott’s Marketplace, which serves the legendary fried chicken dinner that started it all back in 1934.

Need a quick bite in the morning? There’s a new walk-up option, The Pantry, which serves Starbucks coffee, snacks, pastries, and grab-n-go options.

Joshua Sudock/Cedar Fair

The Location
This is the best part about staying at the Knott’s Hotel: Not only are you a short walk to the park (meaning, an easy way out at naptime when your tiny coaster fanatic hits a wall), but the hotel is a just short drive from other Orange County destinations including Disneyland, Great Wolf Lodge, and Angel Stadium. It’s also just across the street from Knott’s Soak City (a huge win for anyone who’s ever known the urgent need for a long, hot shower after a day at a waterpark).

Joshua Sudock/ Knott’s Berry Farm

The Price:
You can’t beat $167 a night (what we found when we searched on Expedia) which is less than anything comparable if you wanted to stay at a Disney hotel (we still love you, though, Disney Hotels)—so not only is Knott’s an upscale, clean and comfy place to sleep when your kids are totally wiped after a day at the park, but it could save you a few Disneyland tickets’ worth of cash. Win-win! You can even save on some packages that combine park admission with an overnight stay.

This now-shuttered gold mine is a short distance from the heart of Breckenridge, and it’s something you won’t forget. You’ll walk almost 1,000 feet into the heart of the mine and learn what it was like for miners in the 19th century. There is also a chance to pan for gold, pet the donkeys, go on a treasure hunt, and try the extreme sledding course in the winter. There’s also a fun gift store at Country Boy Mine filled with gems, fun toys, and historic books about the history of mining in Colorado.

3. Go hiking.

All those mountains you ski in the winter? There are trails all over them, and in the summer, it’s one of the best ways to soak in the mountain air, wildflowers, waterfalls, and lakes. Some of the best hikes for families include the Sallie Barber Mine Trail, Blue River Trail, and the Fairy Forest Sawmill Reservoir Trail.

4. Eat at one of the many restaurants in town.

Kate Loweth

There is no end to the options for dining in Breckenridge. One of our favorite spots is Tin Plate Pizza. Located in an old mining cabin in the historic district, this spot is steeped in history. Home to the town’s gold assayer, Tin Plate is where Colorado’s largest gold nugget, colloquially named “Tom’s Baby,” was cleaned and weighed at 13.5 pounds in 1887. Go for the meatballs to start and then choose from a dozen pizza options like our favorite, the elote pizza that’s topped with corn, roasted poblano peppers and goat cheese.

Downstairs at Eric’s has a great menu, 27 arcade games, and a laid-back vibe. Breckenridge Brewery has fantastic apps for kids (think giant pretzels), a relaxed space, and great beers for the parents. Crepes a la Cart is well worth the wait in line, The Blue Moose is your best bet for breakfasts, and the Kenosha Steak House has one of the best decks in town, cornhole, and room to run.

5. Stay at the Grand Colorado on Peak 8 for the ultimate vacation experience.

Gabby Cullen

Whether you’re there to ski or snowboard, or if you prefer the mountain town in the summer months, the Grand Colorado has everything you need, plus more. The resort has multi-bedroom suites with full kitchens, so you can opt to eat in (be sure to grab groceries at the store outside of town, as there aren’t many grocery options in town) your apartment. You can book your stay here

The Grand Colorado on Peak 8 has an escape room, lawn games like giant chess, shuffleboard, Nintendo and Wii rentals, two indoor/outdoor pools, splash pads for little kids, an arcade room with everything from air hockey to pinball, a free little library, and five private movie theaters you can reserve at the front desk upon arrival. You’ll see kids having fun everywhere: the lobby, the water zone, and outside. When staying at the Grand Colorado, you’ll have direct access to Peak 8 and the BreckConnect gondola.

If you want to dine at The Grand Colorado at Peak 8, Robbie’s Tavern is perfect for burgers, sandwiches, a fantastic Philly cheesesteak, and other upscale pub fare. It’s also a great spot to watch snow enthusiasts in the winter and the outdoor fun of Epic Discovery in the summer months. Ullr Café is where you’ll find coffee, baked goods (try the sausage roll), and a fun happy hour at the end of the day.

6. Spend the day at Epic Discovery.

Epic Discovery is the place for summer guests to enjoy ropes courses, panning for gems, a bungee trampoline, a bounce house, an alpine slide, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more. If you aren’t staying near Peak 8, you can ride the gondola from town up to the mountainside for a day of fun. Epic Discovery is open from late June to Labor Day daily from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm, and the BreckConnect gondola is open daily from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.

7. Enjoy the art scene.

Kate Loweth

From a downtown full of sculptures to live theater performances, Breckenridge is full of ways to explore the arts. We loved discovering these points of interest along Main Street as well as tracking down the famed Breckenridge Troll in a nearby park. Named Isak Heartstone, this 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture is located on the Trollstigen Trail next to Illinois Gulch Trailhead. You can walk here from Main Street to check out this massive sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who is known worldwide for bringing awareness to recycling and upcycling by building great things out of trash.

Another one of the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids is to catch a show at the Riverwalk Center, where live music and other events happen weekly (most are all-ages appropriate!). In August, you can enjoy the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, when dozens of art events are held in parks, on trails, and in cultural venues.

Bonus: you can even explore the area’s public art using the self-guided audio tour.

8. Visit the Mountain Top Explorium.

If you’re looking for a indoor things to do in Breckenridge with kids, then Mountain Top Explorium is the place! Kids will love the Mountain Top Medical Center exhibit, where they can check X-rays, rescue skiers stranded on a slope, review vitals, and be first responders! Another fun pretend play area is the Wonder Lab, where kids can write their names on a glow-in-the-dark board, their shadows, and create a design on a giant Lite Brite.

Other exhibits include the Rocky Mountain Wildlife exhibit, the Tot Spot, and the Kidstruction Zone. They offer a summer day camp and guided astronomy sessions are coming soon.

9. Ride bikes along the Blue River Bikeway.

picture of a girl riding a bike in Breckenridge, CO
Kate Loweth

The Blue River Bikeway runs through the heart of town. The paved path is perfect for families who want to enjoy the mountain views. If you have toddlers or young kids, be aware that part of the path is on an incline, so you might benefit from renting a bike with a seat attachment. Don’t forget to pack lots of snacks and water and stopping at the playground at mile 3 is a must.

All throughout town, you can find ski shops that double as bike rental shops during the warm months like Elevation Cycles. Book a guided tour of the mountain bike trails with Colorado Adventure Guides to increase your skills or try something you’ve never done before. It’s a great way to view the area from a different vantage point and explore as a family.

Keep in mind that Breckenridge’s elevation can hit you hard when you arrive. Be sure to hydrate for a few days before you arrive, as well as while you are in Breckenridge. And, reapply sunscreen when you are out and about.

This trip was paid for by Grand Colorado, but all opinions here belong to the writer.

The birthday invite didn’t come. They didn’t get the part in the school play. Their best friend moved away. Sound familiar? As parents, we have the (unpleasant) task of watching our kids learn the same life lessons we did in our childhoods. It can be hard to resist the urge to make sure they never have to experience the frustration or sadness that comes with not getting what they want, but disappointment is a healthy emotion for kids and can contribute to their social and intellectual development, as noted in Psychology Today. The caveat? It only works if kids understand that being disappointed at times will help them achieve their goals in life. And that’s where we come in.

Even if they do understand (or at least try to), that doesn’t mean it feels good or comes easy. That’s why we’ve enlisted a few experts to offer tips for parents when it comes to helping kids learn how to deal with disappointment.

1. Empathize with Their Feelings

Licensed professional clinical counselor Melissa Marote says that, first and foremost, it’s essential to validate your kids’ feelings; really empathize with what they’re going through. Listen to their feelings and respond with things like, “This must be frustrating.” You should avoid compounding the negativity, however. As you discuss the things your kids are missing out on, Marote explains, try to put a positive spin on it. For example, encourage your kids to save up their excitement for all the things they will eventually get to do in the future.

2. Give Them Reassurance

Child development expert and creator of The Moodsters Denise Daniels, RN, MS, tells us that it’s important to remind kids that this is only temporary—the playdate will happen when it isn’t raining, and they’ll have the opportunity to try out for the team next season. It might be hard for young kids to picture life beyond the current day or week, but still, Daniels suggests having kids make a list of things they want to do in the future because there will always be another opportunity to try.

3. Teach Self-Calming Skills

a sad little boy learning how to deal with disappointment

Emotions can run high when kids are anxious and sad. Teaching kids how to calm down and manage their feelings is an essential tool for how to deal with anxiety. Marote suggests giving kids a breathing technique to oxygenate the brain and help kids think more clearly. Show your kids how to take a deep breath in and then blow out, like they’re blowing out birthday candles or making bubbles. For younger kids, blowing real bubbles is another excellent method, Marote says.

One more tip for the little kids: talking to a stuffed animal. Kids are so close and connected to their stuffed animals, which makes them a great comfort for kids who are dealing with hard feelings. Tell your kids, “Talk to your teddy bear about how sad you are,” Marote says.

4. Give Them a Choice

So, a trip to the indoor playground or a group trip with friends to a nearby amusement park is out. Naturally, your kids will be disappointed, but you can give them some power (especially when they’re smaller and they feel like they have none) by offering them a choice. “Our plans have changed, and your outing with friends has to be postponed. What if you pick the movie for family movie night and we’ll look for another day that works for the group?”

5. Redirect Focus

For kids that become very hyper-focused on negative feelings, it can be helpful to use distraction techniques when learning how to deal with disappointment, Marote says. Suggest an impromptu game of “I, Spy” or get creative by asking kids to draw a picture about how they’re feeling. Other ideas include reading a funny book or watching a silly video, asking them trivia questions, and telling them jokes. This is especially important when it’s close to bedtime and you’re trying to keep things positive before sleep.

6. Don’t Fix It

a mom helping her son learn how to deal with disappointment

This is a hard one. Whether you want to make your kids feel better or you figure you can just take care of it (fix the toy, help find the sock, bring the forgotten homework to school), it’s more effective to act as a guide when kids are learning how to deal with disappointment, according to PBS. Ask questions that will help them troubleshoot what happened and how they feel about the problem. “How did you feel when that happened? What do you wish had happened instead? How can we turn this into something good?

7. Stick with Your Normal Routine

In times of stress, encourage kids to keep regular times of going to bed, eating meals, and doing homework, Daniels says. Having a basic plan for the day is essential because kids thrive on predictability. When something doesn’t work out, at least they’ll know what should happen down the line.

8. Find Time to Have Special Moments

If your kids are bummed because they can’t attend their friend’s birthday or their favorite ice cream flavor isn’t available or they missed the final shot on goal, take the opportunity to plan something else fun. This doesn’t mean you have to take them to the amusement park or invest tons of money; just spend quality time together and you’ll see their moods lift.

9. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Hugs

Close contact, like hugs, can go a long way to providing kids with comfort when they’re learning how to deal with disappointment. That way, they’ll know you might not fix the problem, but you’ll always be there to offer comfort. Marote also suggests encouraging younger kids to hug their stuffies when they’re feeling sad or anxious. If you’re dealing with disappointed tweens or teens, look for signs that they’re ready for a hug or having you in their personal space. If it doesn’t happen, remember that being nearby and ready to listen is just as important.

We’re drowning in stuff. We desperately need to get rid of some stuff. And there should be an easier way to go about it. Marie Kondo (who’s actually come around after having kids) made an empire out of ditching everything that doesn’t “spark joy.” But my vacuum and dish rags do not spark joy. Once in a while, my children don’t spark joy, either. I cannot Kondo any of them out of my house, no matter how much, some days, I might want to.

Any time I’ve embarked on a massive decluttering spree, I’ve regretted the epic scale and whirlwind effort later. Yes, I really chucked all my winter clothes in the middle of summer more than once, because, unlike lab rats, I do not learn from experience. Do not follow my lead—there’s no need to go all in.

Instead, let’s focus on certain categories of items that can be purged without repercussions. You can chuck these without guilt, intense spousal consultation, or lingering regret. Donate and recycle what you can, and trash what you can’t. You can do this; I believe in you.

Picasso probably created 50,000 works of art in his lifetime. Your kid appears to be headed in that direction, too. We know your son or daughter is precious, but do you need to keep every single drawing they have scrawled in their lifetime? Keep the best, maybe one from each month, and throw out the rest. Your kid doesn’t want you to keep them all. My mother-in-law gave us reams of my husband’s childhood scribbles. I wish she had kept it to a few—they would mean more.

2. The bad pictures
You have a million billion photos of your kid. In some of them, they’re making a weird face or scratching their butt or ducking under the table. You don’t need these pictures in your life. Do future you a favor: Narrow it down from 57 ever-so-slightly-different snaps to a handful of winners from every event—big or small—or day. (Psst, the Tinybeans app can help with that.) You’ll feel less overwhelmed, we swear.

3. The presents you feel guilty for hating
Someone gave you a thing. They put thought into the thing. You want to like the thing, but you don’t like the thing, and you feel really bad, you do, and it’s such a sweet thought, but it’s not your thing. Donating the thing is not disavowing the kind thoughts. It is passing on the kind thoughts. Just donate the thing and stop the guilt freight train. It’s just running you over every time you peek under your dresser.

4. That thing your kid loved but has ignored, and it’s now developmentally inappropriate, and they won’t notice if you chuck it
I don’t care how much they loved it. They don’t need it, and they don’t want it, and it’s taking up space in your house. Caveat: You can keep it if it’s a stuffie. You are allowed to keep a stuffie or six.

5. That iPhone box
The impulse to keep iPhone boxes remains a great American mystery.

6. Birthday cards
One day, you imagine, your child will want every birthday card they ever received. Pause. Think about your end game. Do you want to hoard every birthday card you’ve ever received? You wouldn’t look at them. You’d vaguely resent them. Don’t be that mother who saves all of her kid’s, then calls them in 20 years and attempts to pass the torch. Throw them out now and save the argument later.

7. Those clothes your kids refuse to wear
My oldest wouldn’t wear jeans. He had a drawerful. Instead, he favored ratty athletic pants or shorts. Why keep a literal drawer full of clothes (jeans take up a lot of space) when I could fill them with clothes he’d actually use? The same goes for your toddler who insists on wearing a dress every day and hasn’t touched her sweatsuits in ages. Let. Them. Go. Eventually, I purged all my kids’ closets—or rather, I let them do it because they’re old enough that I can’t force them to wear what I pick any longer (cue dramatic, tearful sniff). We traded with friends for clothes the kids liked. Then I bought my oldest cargo pants.

8. The fair/amusement park tickets of yore
Once, you visited a magical land of child slot machines. Yes, you said as you dragged your spawn from the blinking hellscape, wishing there was a matching version of Gamblers Anonymous. We will return one day to use the approximately three dollars and 25 cents worth of tickets that you can trade for a loud, plastic toy. Do not think about how much money you dropped to earn those tickets: They’re banking on that. The game was always rigged, and your kid had fun at the arcade. Ditch ‘em.

9. The mud-caked shoes
Sometimes, no matter how much you spray a pair of white sneakers, you can’t get the mud out of the cracks. Sometimes, you’re too icked out to scrub it with a toothbrush. This is not about the mud. This is about the sneakers: They’re ancient and they smell bad, and you can use the mud as a convenient excuse to toss them. Your children will not argue because mud is disgusting, and they think those shoes are hopelessly contaminated, anyway.

10. The old magazines
You will never look at that issue of Southern Living again. Admit it. You’re not going to cook the squash casserole, okay? Your kid would cheerfully choose cannibalism over zucchini. Pulp the magazines and back away slowly.

11. Tupperware without lids
Where do the lids go? That’s a trick question—you will never ever find out. Accept what you cannot change—the lids are gone—and even if they do appear at the bottom of a cabinet, they’ll be dusty and gross and you won’t want to use them anyway.

12. Sippy cups and bottles
To confront them is to confront mortality. Be brave. Remember—sippy cups come with grubby paws and sticky faces and diapers. Lots of diapers. Remember those diapers and the screaming nights and the times you never slept? Maybe you don’t: You didn’t sleep. You do not want to return there. Ditch the cups and bottles as soon as you’re able. You are not going back. And if you’re still in that season of life where you’re drowning in dozens of parts, keep the faith! Your day will come soon enough.

13. The idea of achieving a perfectly clean space
Throw this one away while you’re at it, too. It’s not going to happen. You have children and a life, and work’s never done. Get rid of the idea that you’re getting rid of everything. Nothing’s ever perfect. Your to-do list never ends, and you’ll drive yourself batty if you think it will. Sing the Frozen “Let it Go” song. You’re doing the best you can, and honestly, that’s plenty!
