There’s no reason you can’t be the mastermind behind your own baby photoshoots

You’ve probably been taking impromptu pics of your baby since day one—an unexpectedly adorable expression here, a snuggly selfie there. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a few really good shots of your growing family? Yes, you could hire a professional photographer to create the perfect experience, or you could get creative and do it yourself (which can be a lot more fun!). With the holiday season on the horizon, you have a great excuse to get everyone together for some quality, photo-worthy time, and then share the amazing snaps from your baby photoshoot with friends and family on Tinybeans (check out our app here!).

Here’s how to plan and execute your DIY photo shoot.

1. Enlist a friend or family member

Do you have a teenage niece or nephew who’s passionate about photography? What about a neighbor with a really great DSLR camera? Call in a favor and ask if that artsy pal of yours would be interested in setting aside an hour or two to capture your family for a moment in time. Offer to return the favor in some way (especially if he or she has a family to be photographed!), and say “thanks” with a gift card to a nice restaurant or a bottle of wine and some gourmet chocolate.

2. Nail the timing

Think about your baby’s fluctuating energy and moods throughout the day, and pick a time when you know your little one will be the most calm and content. For some, this is first-thing in the morning. For many, this is right after a nap or feeding. Be flexible with your baby photoshoot and work around the youngest one’s temperament. Also, if you’ll be shooting outside, try to maximize the natural light by taking advantage of early morning or late afternoon rays, but avoid the harsh overhead sun at midday.

3. Coordinate outfits—without being matchy-matchy

We’re all familiar with the matching khaki pants and crisp white shirt look found in countless family photos. While you want to look cohesive, don’t feel obligated to match outfits, which can look canned and inauthentic. Instead, decide on two or three colors (at least one being a neutral) that you will use as your inspiration and find outfits that fit the bill. Simple, solid (non-patterned) clothing is always a safe bet.

4. Carefully consider props

Think about what toys and objects mean something to you and your little ones. If your child has a favorite, love-worn stuffed animal, why not include it in the shot? Be selective, but try a few different props that are unique to your family. And be sure to bring plenty of soft blankets to lay on the grass, curl up in, and play peek-a-boo with.

5. Get low and close

If you’re all sitting on a blanket or casually lying down on the grass, ask your photographer to get as low to the ground as possible so you’re all at the same eye level. And see if he or she is willing to do some close-up shots in addition to wider angles. The variety will make for a really nice collection of photos.

6. Be goofy

Encourage everyone to be silly in an effort to get the baby to laugh and smile. Too often, parents are focused on “looking” polished and perfectly happy in their first baby photoshoot. But feeling carefree in the moment and trying to have fun will result in nicer, more natural images.

7. Forget the camera

Some forward-facing shots are a good idea, but try not to focus on where the camera is at all times. Ask the photographer to move around and achieve different angles that way, rather than trying to coax your baby to turn in a specific direction. Candid shots can be unique and just as gorgeous as posed photos.

8. Don’t stop shooting

If your pal hasn’t photographed babies or tots before, kindly explain that fast-moving little ones make for difficult models so he should use continuous shooting mode and keep snapping. Chances are, one or two of the series will be the perfect pic.

9. Take turns

A big, happy family photo is a great idea, but don’t hesitate to take turns experimenting with who’s in the photo. Take some with just kids, just Dad and baby, just Mom and baby, and all potential iterations. Don’t get too preoccupied on everyone being in same photo.

10. Just go with the crazy

If you have an older toddler running around in circles or your newly crawling baby wants to be on the move, grab a kid, have your partner do the same, and flip them upside down for a playful shot. If tears or tantrums are part of the mix, don’t stress. They can actually make for great, memorable photos.

For parents who want to share special moments with friends and family without making it a public display, there’s the Tinybeans app (you can learn more and download here!). The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Today was one of those days when I was struggling. I had a bunch of work I needed to get done, I wanted to do a long workout to make up for not working out at all yesterday, I had cooking to do to prep for the next few days and Meadow just wanted to play with me. It’s so easy to write off these kinds of days—and I know all us parents have them—and just assume we will find moments to connect tomorrow.  But, today Meadow was my teacher. We came back from a walk and she said, “Let’s find some pieces of nature, Mommy.”

So, we did. We went into the front yard. We crawled over rocks, looked under trees, hopped over puddles. At each spot, we collected leaves and sticks, and rocks. We looked at color and texture. We found unusual shapes and unexpected angles. We delighted over a particularly shiny pink-ish pebble. We exclaimed at the brightness of the colors on the leaves. And as we found each treasure we put it in a box.

Spending that time outdoors with her shifted my entire day. I was reminded, once again of the groundbreaking and amazing work of Pediatrician Nooshin Razani, MD who is prescribing nature to kids as part of her practice. If you haven’t heard of her work, check out this UCSF article or her amazing Ted Talk.  Being in nature helps with anxiety, depression, loneliness, stress and so many other issues that so many children face.

Particularly, right now in the face of a pandemic, kids and adults alike are facing huge feelings of isolation and overwhelm. My family is very privileged to be able to access nature whenever we want and we talk a lot about how for many kids, that is not an option and we need to work hard to ensure that children in the future all have access to the beauty that surrounds us in California and beyond.

We finished our collection process with a new sense of ease and smiles. I wasn’t looking at my watch or checking my email. I was just out there observing, seeing, noticing with Meadow.

We came inside and Meadow carefully arranged each item on a piece of plain white paper with the detailed eye like you would expect to see on reality TV shows with celebrity designers. Each item had a specific place it needed to be placed. As I watched her work, and she consulted me on my thoughts, I couldn’t help but admire the ease she found in creating balance with the objects. The stick bends one way, so she found a leaf that bent the other way. The rock was pointy, so she found something round to balance it.

It occurred to me that maybe part of the reason that nature relieves stress is because it is by definition, in balance. There is nothing that needs to be changed or switched. Every item in nature is placed exactly as it should be. As we work to destress and declutter our lives, maybe all we really need to do is look outside more often and find the masterpieces in plain sight.

Eyeglasses can add an additional flair to your kid’s style, but is there a style or frame shape that is better suited for their face shape? How do you know what the best frame shape is for their face shape?

As the co-founder of Jonas Paul Eyewear, my team and I have spent quite a bit of time studying frames and faces, and can recommend the best frames to accentuate each face shape and bring out the personality behind the lenses. Here are a few of my tips on the best way to find stylish kids glasses to accentuate their already sparkling style and personality. And if going into a store sounds overwhelming, many eyewear companies now offer home try-on kits so you can explore and try on various styles in the comfort of your home.

Oval Faces: If you’re not sure if your child has an oval face shape, take a look to see if they have balanced proportions, high cheekbones, and a chin that is slightly narrower than the forehead. To maintain the natural, balanced proportions of an oval face, I always recommend finding frames that are not overly wide or tall to steer away from creating an illusion that your face features are disproportionate. Faces that already have a naturally balanced look will do best with these types of medium-sized frames.

Round Faces: Typically, if your kid has a round face, it means that they have soft angles, a slightly curved jawline, and a jawline that is slightly narrower than the forehead. Finding st‌yles that contrast the shape of your face, such as rectangular st‌yles with a narrower eyeglass, will help better define their features and make their face appear longer. A few of our st‌yles, such as The Maddie or The Lincoln are the perfect example.

Square Faces: With angular features, a strong jawline, and cheekbones that are about the same width as the forehead, square face shapes are usually better suited with circular frames, as they tend to soften the angles of the face. If you’re not sure where to begin, glasses that have softer curves or edges will definitely accentuate the sharp features in you or your child’s face. Again, it’s all about contrast!

Heart-Shaped Faces: For heart-shaped faces with high cheekbones, a wider forehead that narrows down to a smaller, defined chin, and a sharply tapered jawline, I recommend lighter, more airy frames, both in color and in material. This st‌yle can make heart-shaped faces appear to be more balanced and symmetrical from top to bottom, reducing the width of the forehead. St‌yles like The Maddie and The Paul are a great option to test out with your little ones!

While it can feel overwhelming to test out new styles or freshen up a look (even as adults!), always remember, it’s an ongoing journey. Try and find what feels most comfortable for your child, test it out, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Laura, co-founder and COO of Jonas Paul Eyewear, started the brand with her husband shortly after their first child, Jonas, was born with a rare-eye condition. From there, Jonas Paul Eyewear was created with the mission of creating stylish eyewear and providing sight to children in need with every purchase.

Chances are you’ve seen the viral posts that make the internet rounds about moms getting in the picture, but as Chrissy Teigen points out in an Instagram post, it’s not often easy to get in the picture when you’re always the one acting as family photographer.

Mom and celeb Teigen shared a selfie with daughter Luna to Instagram with a caption explaining that she is the family photographer. “I never have pictures of myself because I am selfless and am the designated photo taker and keeper for my family and no one else seems to care to be thoughtful and take good photos of me they merely click them off without paying attention to angles or lighting or general photo ambience,” she wrote.

Thousands of followers chimed in, commenting that they shared the same experience and were often left out of photos as moms. While Teigen makes a valid point, her husband John Legend wasn’t going to let her off the hook so easily for being called out in front of her 25 million followers. In response, he posted an Instagram message of his own with a very flattering image of his wife. He captioned the photo, “When your wife says you’re a bad Instagram husband but you’re like…”

And to drive the point home he posted a second adorable shot of Teigen and Luna apparently enjoying a tea party with the hashtag #goodinstagramhusband.

Touché. Still, the message is an important one. Let’s all get in the picture more often.

Dr. Seuss could see the red-shingled roof of the landmark Hotel Del from his studio and that got him dreaming. In 1970 he painted “I Dreamed I was a Doorman at the Hotel del Coronado,” a riot of whimsical angles and colors. Why not head over the bridge and see what had Seuss so smitten? Over the years the hotel has hosted numerous movie stars, politicians and artists, but you don’t need to book a room to enjoy a stroll on the property or lunch on the patio.
