Repeat after me: Getaways with young kids are not a vacation, they’re a trip. Now that you’ve set the right expectations, check out these baby travel hacks that will make your trip a little less work and a lot more enjoyable for you and everyone else involved. Whether you’re flying with a baby to an all-inclusive or taking a road trip, these are the keys to a good getaway.

1. Plan activities.
For older babies who are active and stay up for longer stretches, plan simple activities to pass the time and keep them engaged. One idea: Bring a water bottle filled with pom-poms for your little one to take out and put back in. You can also bring interactive books to hold your babe’s attention.

2. Ship diapers and wipes to your destination.
You have enough stuff to squeeze into suitcases. Use a service like Amazon to send diapers and wipes ahead of time to your destination, whether it’s grandma’s for the holidays or somewhere tropical. If you’re staying at a hotel, ask them if they’ll accept deliveries prior to your arrival.

3. Nurse or feed your baby during takeoff.
This is an important one. To help your little one deal with pressure changes in the cabin during takeoff (and landing!) that could make them uncomfortable, nurse or give your baby a bottle at that time. The sucking distracts your child and alleviates much of the discomfort.

4. Request a portable crib in your hotel reservation.
Most hotels will offer a portable crib at no extra cost. Request it in your reservation, so you can make other arrangements if the hotel informs you they can’t provide it. Pro tip: Bring your own crib sheets with you. They won’t take up much space in your luggage and will be soft and smell familiar to help your child drift off to sleep in their new location.

5. Baby-wear to keep hands free.
Definitely bring your baby carrier or wrap. This frees up your hands for carrying luggage and other important items, like handing your ID and boarding pass to TSA. Plus, being close to you will likely keep your baby calm and happy in unfamiliar, sometimes stressful, environments. If you’re traveling by car, keep your wrap on or your carrier easily accessible, like on the floor right by your baby’s car seat, so it’s quick and easy to put on at every stop.

6. Wear a badge to hold your ID, ticket, and baby’s birth certificate.
You know those clear name-card badge holders they distribute at conferences, with a lanyard? Use one of those to hold your license, boarding pass, and baby’s birth certificate. No digging through your purse or running the risk of it falling out of your pocket. Simple, accessible, and no fuss.

7. Simplify the car seat situation.
If you’re flying, you can usually check your car seat at the ticketing desk for no charge (call ahead to confirm with your airline). Make sure they put a plastic bag over it (you can also purchase a sturdy bag for your car seat online). Or, if you want to eliminate the hassle of bringing it with you, arrange to include a car seat in your rental car. If you’re taking ride-sharing services, check their app to see if they offer cars with car seats in that area.

8. Pack odor-blocking diaper sacks.
A blow-out at 30,000 feet or in the middle of the desert with no trashcan in sight doesn’t have to be a total disaster. Pack Arm & Hammer diaper dispenser bags or even just plastic grocery bags to mask the smell of the dirty diaper. Nobody wants to lug a stinky diaper around or assault others’ noses, but at least this will make it a little more pleasant.

9. Pack a baby essentials kit.
Keep a pacifier, wipes, sanitizing wipes, and other essentials easily accessible, in your purse or diaper bag. This goes for flights and road trips. When there’s a mess or a howling baby, you’ll want to access these items as quickly as possible.

10. Bring snacks—for baby and you.
Pack simple, low-mess snacks for your baby, like puffs or pouches. And it’s important for you to stay fed as well. Pack protein-filled snacks to keep you energized during your travels and a decadent treat as well. If drama ensues, you’re going to want the good stuff to help you through it.

11. Keep extra clothes in your carry-on bag.
Keep an extra outfit for baby and a shirt for you in your carry-on or diaper bag for air and car travel. The goal is to keep it easily accessible so when a blowout, spit-up, or other potentially outfit-ruining scenarios happen, you can solve it without having to wait for landing and checked baggage retrieval.

12. Think location, location, location for the hotel room.
When you book your hotel room, ask for it to be away from the elevators, pool, and vending/ice machines. While you can’t control if the hotel room is perfectly noise-free, choosing your room carefully will help make it a quiet space.

13. Pack a sound machine to help baby sleep.
Increase the quiet factor in your room by bringing a small, portable sound machine with you to mask noise from other rooms. Don’t want to haul something else with you? Download free white noise or wave sounds to play from your phone or tablet.

14. Do a thorough check of the hotel and car before leaving.
This is one of those tips for traveling with a baby that you’ll thank us for later. Before checking out or returning the rental car, look under beds, under seats, the trunk, and glove compartment, because something will likely be left there. And always double-check that your baby’s favorite lovey and stuffie is with you at every transition and location change.

Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY are going out of business, and it’s the end of an era

Take a deep breath. There’s some big news in the retail world. Two popular stores, buybuy BABY and Bed Bath & Beyond, are closing their doors for good. Filing for bankruptcy on April 23, Bed Bath & Beyond (the parent company of buybuy BABY) announced that its 360 locations and 120 buybuy BABY stores and their respective websites will remain open for now after securing a $240mil loan to fund its operations while they navigate bankruptcy. It’s possible they’ll find a buyer for some or all of their business. If so, the company said they’ll “pivot away” from store closings. They may also end up becoming online-only retailers. All that being said, the future of both buybuyBABY and Bed Bath & Beyond is still up in the air, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on what comes next.

Bed Bath & Beyond/buybuy BABY

Before you start mourning the loss of your favorite shopping destinations, there’s a silver lining: starting Wednesday, they’ll begin offering massive discounts to clear out their inventory. That’s right, you can snag some incredible deals on everything from baby gear to home decor. So, whether you’re a new parent looking to stock up on baby essentials or a home decor enthusiast on the hunt for a great bargain, now’s the time to hit up buybuy BABY and Bed Bath & Beyond before it’s too late. Here’s what you need to know.

What about all those coupons you've been saving?

Bed Bath & Beyond/buybuy BABY

Okay, bad news first. As of Wednesday, April 26, those famous 20% off coupons won't be accepted anymore. Creditors aren't going to love the idea of tacking on another 20% off liquidation prices (more on that in a minute). What about gift cards and store credit? The company says those will still be accepted for a limited time. They expect customers to be able to use gift cards through May 8 and to be able to redeem merchandise credits until May 15.

What kind of sales come along with this whole thing?

Canva

buybuy BABY and Bed Bath & Beyond will be offering "deep discounts," but what that ultimately means as far as percentages remains to be seen. Just remember that everything purchased after April 23 is final sale and can't be returned or exchanged. “We encourage you to come shop for your favorite products while merchandise selection is best,” the company's FAQ sheet says.

buybuy BABY and Bed Bath & Beyond registries will be moving to a new platform

Canva

“We expect to partner with an alternative platform where you will be able to transfer your data and complete your registry,” a statement from the chains included. “We will provide details in the coming days.” As of right now, your registry data with both Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY is safe, can be accessed, and will be moved to a new provider soon.

Update:  Babylist is stepping in to help support expecting and new parents registered with buybuy BABY. Customers can find instructions on how to easily transfer their registry here. In order to support customers as they move their registry, Babylist has created a dedicated customer support email: buybuybaby@babylist.com to ensure that the transition is smooth.

As bummed as we are about the news, we’re staying on top of any updates. We also really encourage you to start your shopping ASAP to grab the best deals at the buybuy BABY and Bed Bath & Beyond going-out-of-business sales. According to The New York Times, stores are expected to be closed by June 30.

February is Black History Month. It’s also a great time to start shopping some of our favorite products from Black-owned brands—and continue to all year.

Shopping Black-owned businesses and turning to products from Black-owned brands is definitely not the only way to support the Black community, but it is a great step. Of course, you’re putting money directly towards supporting small businesses, which is always a win. Not only that, but by buying products from Black-owned brands, you’re also directly supporting more than just the brands. Black business owners, creators, employees, and consumers all benefit. How? By helping to redistribute resources and contributing to generational wealth. White businesses have always historically had more opportunities, starting with easier access to capital (and resulting in more opportunity for success and growth).

Obviously, our work doesn’t end with supporting Black-owned businesses. Donating to social justice organizations and educating ourselves continuously through anti-racist resources are also absolutely necessary. But it’s important to recognize the uphill battle Black entrepreneurs have faced and continue to face. Even just access to shelf space for products from Black-owned brands has been a massive issue. Organizations like the 15% Pledge are working with retailers to contractually commit 15% of their annual spend to Black-owned brands.

No matter what you’re looking for, from fashion, skincare, home goods, games, and tasty treats, there’s something for everyone in our list below. Your support can make a real tangible difference to these fantastic businesses. They’re some of our favorite products from Black-owned brands—not just for Black History Month, but year round. So get ready to do some serious scrolling, and remember to make sure you’re also seeking out Black-owned businesses in your own area!

Over 1.1 million women give birth via caesarean every year, so it’s about time we see a mom show off her scar with pride. Say hello to Kelly Hughes, the first woman in SI Swimsuit history to be photographed showing her C-section war wound!

The celebration of moms is part of SI Swimsuits new initiative, Pay with Change. The platform’s purpose is to celebrate brands and companies who are making change for women. This year’s first official partner is Frida Mom, purveyor of mom and baby essentials, and yes––the famed nose sucker.

Chelsea Hirschhorn, CEO and founder of Frida, shares “Joining Sports Illustrated as its first official Pay With Change brand partner is a perfect fit for Frida because they have a valuable platform to disrupt the traditional narrative around womens’ bodies – especially those they feature who are mothers.”

As partners, SI Swimsuit and Frida Mom will work together on content that seeks to update the narrative around the changes female bodies go through as they transition into motherhood and postpartum recovery.

Ok, so back to rockstar, mom and cover model Kelly Hughes. The 42-year-old is mom to a three-year-old son and admits that mentally dealing with her scar hasn’t always been easy. In an Instagram post, she shared, “I am speechless and so honored to be in @si_swimsuit 2022 as the FIRST woman to expose her c-section scar in magazines history!… I struggled with insecurities from my scar being that I’m a model and my incredibly difficult recovery but it wasn’t until I ’embraced my scar that I experienced the true power in it ‘ 💕”

With C-section births accounting for over 30% of all births in the United States every year, it’s time the conversation changed so all moms can feel prepared, especially emotionally, for cesareans if that’s the route they take. And anyone who’s experienced one will tell you that a C-section doesn’t mean they “missed out on childbirth” or necessarily skipped labor.

In the words of SI Swimsuit, “Let’s give some love to all our moms out there to acknowledge the power of the female body and the beauty of motherhood! 🤍”
