Sure, babies are adorable and have this irresistible smell that compels us to sniff them daily, but those tiny new humans who cause grownups to talk in reeeeallly high voices (more on that below) are also pretty darn weird. Like, did you know babies are born without kneecaps? How about the fact that if you look in your newborn’s eyes for long enough, your heartbeats will sync up? If you think that‘s strange, see what else made our list of surprising, little-known baby facts.

Babies learn their mother’s voice in the womb

It makes sense that newborns would know their mothers’ voices—they’ve just spent 9 months shacked up inside Mom’s body. In fact, studies show that not only do babies know her voice, but they prefer it, consistently showing increased attention when exposed to mom’s sound versus dad’s. Want proof? Just watch this adorable TikTok video of a wailing newborn calming down after hearing the familiar sound of Mom’s voice.

They also remember music they heard in utero

If you were on a disco music kick throughout your pregnancy, don’t be surprised if your baby perks up at the sound of “Saturday Night Fever.” A study by the University of Helsinki found that babies who were exposed to a particular lullaby in the womb appeared to recognize the song even several months after birth. So pick your tunes wisely!

Newborns can’t taste salt but have way more taste buds than adults

No matter how many chips you eat during those early days of breastfeeding, it won’t matter to your tiny guzzler. Research suggests that your baby can’t taste salt until about 4 months of age. That being said, your budding foodie has about twice the number of taste buds as you—including having them in the tonsils as well as the roof and sides of the mouth. Scientists think these added taste buds help make babies more receptive to their mothers’ milk.

Babies are born without kneecaps (kinda)

Those cute little baby knees are extra pudgy for a reason: there are no kneecaps in there! Or rather, infants don’t have hard kneecaps made of bone. Baby knees are initially only soft cartilage (better for cushioning them during tumbles), which eventually ossifies into bone as your tot grows.

And yet, at birth they have more bones than adults

Those little skeletons aren’t exactly miniature copies of ours. Most babies are born with almost 100 more bones than grownups—about 300 altogether—which fuse as they grow, eventually becoming the standard 206 bones that are typically found in adults.

Newborns can’t cry with tears

Oh, but they can cry. It’s just… tearless. This is because a baby’s tear ducts don’t fully develop until anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks of age.

Some babies have a “mini-period” after birth

Don’t freak out if you see a little pink or red discharge in your baby girl’s diaper. This phenomenon, called “pseudo-menstruation” or “false menses,” can occur in a small percentage of newborn girls up to 10 days after birth and is caused by the rapid decrease in estrogen that occurs when a babe leaves the womb. It shouldn’t last more than a few days.  Want more info? This article lays it all out.

Some may also have breasts—or even lactate!

There’s nothing new about babies lactating (about 5% do it), though luckily we’ve stopped thinking of it as “witch’s milk.” Once again, this is thanks to the estrogen in Mom’s body and can happen to boys and girls. No need to worry unless it doesn’t go away within a few weeks of birth (though breastfed babies may have breast swelling that can last up to six months, according to Seattle Children’s Hospital).

Babies have more brain neurons than adults

There’s a lot of growing to do in that promising little brain, and babies are pretty much born with all the neurons they’ll have for their entire lives. Since a good amount of brain cells die as we age, this means newborns actually have more neurons than we grownups do.  As your baby grows, these nerve cells are trimmed according to aging and the old “use it or lose it” adage.

And their brains double in size during the first year

It might seem like your baby has a big head when she pops out into the world, but that newborn noggin will grow to twice its size during the first year! This translates to about an inch during the first month and a half-inch every month thereafter, according to Mayo Clinic.

Our exaggerated “baby talk” actually helps babies learn

The particular way we speak to babies isn’t random (studies show it’s the same all over the world with even Rhesus monkeys addressing their littles in higher pitches). According to a University of Florida study, that strange but familiar way we talk to babies— higher pitch, slower speed, exaggerated pronunciation—actually helps them learn how the words should sound coming out of their mouths.

Baby stomachs are the size of a walnut

Turns out there’s a reason babies get full so quickly—and why you have to feed them so often! A newborn baby’s stomach is about the size of a walnut and can hold just 4-5 teaspoons at a time. Any more than that and you’d better hope you’ve got a burp cloth on your shoulder for the overflow.

You are probably addicted to your baby’s smell

Can’t get enough of your newborn’s personal perfume? It’s not just you. According to a study from the University of Montreal, a baby’s smell is as addictive as drugs are to addicts. The study found that the newborn baby’s odor activated the feel-good reward centers in adult brains, similar to those activated when an addict does drugs. And for moms, this rush of dopamine was even more heightened. So breathe it in, parents!

If mom and baby look into each other’s eyes for long enough, their heartbeats sync up

This is how connected moms and their babies are and, unlike a newborn, we could actually shed a tear it’s so sweet. Research shows that moms and babies are so in tune with one another that if they focus on each other intently, their hearts beat in sync. Think that’s cool? A 2017 study also found that when adults and babies look at each other, their brain waves synchronize. Scientists think this neural connection helps facilitate babies’ social learning. We’re weeping.

Babies are born with an innate sense of rhythm

Your baby may not have any moves yet, but she’s got the beat! Infants are born with a natural rhythm recognition that allows them to detect missing beats in drum sequences they hear, according to a study by the Institute for Psychology in Budapest. Scientists believe it is a result of spending so much time so close to the “ba-bum, ba-bum, ba-bum” of Mom’s beating heart while they’re in utero.

Now go cuddle your loveable little weirdo. And if you’re still in the mood for some quirk, here are 10 weird (but normal) things that babies do.

Make sure to capture all the cutest moments with your babe—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

These ideas will help your one-year-old’s birthday run smoothly

Even though your baby won’t remember their first birthday, it’s a major (and incredibly cute) milestone for parents—one that your kid will love to look back on when they’re older (be sure to save all the best pics in the Tinybeans app). You’ll probably choose the most adorable party outfit, soon to be covered in freshly baked (or bought!) smash cake. But with schedules to take into account and a lot of little personalities to cater to, how do you plan a party to remember that doesn’t end in disaster? Whether hosting a small gathering with family or a big blowout, these are the first birthday party ideas and tips that’ll ensure everyone has a great time—especially the birthday babe.

1. Respect the nap.

Happy, stress-free parties require a well-rested baby, so time the birthday bash around your baby’s naptime. While this may mean a different start time than Grandma expected, everybody (especially your child!) will have a better time if you work around the sleep schedule.

2. Create a quiet area.

Since parties with babies can mean tears and gleeful shrieks, setting up a secondary party area in another room or outside for guests to go to if they need a break from the festivities is a brilliant first birthday party idea. Set out non-electronic toys for babies who may feel overstimulated, and place chairs and snacks there for adults who want a spot for quiet conversation.

3. Designate photographers.

To ensure you capture the big moments and sweet snuggles with important folks, ask a few attendees to take charge of specific photo moments. That way you can focus on your child and guestsand end up in some of the photos, too! Take all the snapshots from the day and make them into a Tinybeans photo book to save your memories of the special day.

4. Choose a simple theme.

If planning a Pinterest-worthy party sounds too stressful, stick to a simple theme. Lifestyle guru and mother of two Camille Styles opted for a summer-themed party for her daughter’s first birthday and used hearts and the colors pink and orange to make the party look cohesive.

5. Or… skip the theme.

No, you don’t need a themed first birthday party. Promise. Instead, spend your money on fun first birthday activities your baby and guests will enjoy. Our favorite is the ball pit. Just buy an inexpensive kiddie pool and a lot of colorful plastic balls. Kids will love to play around in it, and you can set it up at home or in your backyard for your child to enjoy for years to come.

6. Take photos before guests arrive.

One of our favorite ideas when planning parties for one-year-olds olds is to snap pictures before baby gets sleepy or cake-covered and when you and your family are more relaxed and focused. To ensure you get great photos, make or order a small smash cake before the big day and do a low-key photo shoot without any guests around. Baby will be all smiles, and no one flipping through the scrapbook will ever know that the picture was taken on a different day.

7. Weather permitting, opt for an outdoor venue.

A park or playground can be the perfect party spot; all you bring is the cake, balloons, favors, snacks, and a table. The mess will be minimal in the great outdoors, and younger guests will have lots of space to run around.

First birthday party tip: Arrive early to stake out a spot in the shade, and tell guests what color balloons or decorations you have so they know where to find you. If the weather isn’t cooperating and you need to move the party to your home, make extra room indoors by moving furniture out of the party room so little legs can crawl or walk around.

8. Put older kids in charge of games.

Delegate, delegate, delegate. Older kids, like cousins or friends’ children, usually love to be given responsibility at parties, and they’re really good at getting the younger ones’ attention. Put them in charge of party games, music-making, singing songs, and more. Chat with the older kids (and their parents) in advance to ask what they’re comfortable doing and create a plan.

9. Use a cupcake for smashing.

Smash cakes are all the rage with the one-year-old crowd and their photo-taking families, and while we say smash away, a tiny confection or cupcake works just as well with much less mess. You may even be able to salvage your child’s outfit for future events if you go for a less messy, smaller cake.

10. Personalize the party.

Highlight a few of your baby’s favorite things over the past year (first word! favorite food! favorite stuffed animal!) and make a poster you display at the party. This first birthday party idea from Kara’s Party Ideas lets guests learn about your baby and is worth snapping a photo of for your child to revisit in a few years. Better yet, make it a yearly tradition.

11. Create a time capsule.

Asking your guests to write the guest of honor a short letter to be read years from now tops our list of sweet first birthday party ideas. To ward off writer’s block, offer suggestions for what to write, such as helpful advice, a memory of the party or first year, or wishes for the future. Store the letters in a marked container that reads “Do not open until you turn 21” (or whatever age you like). For guests who can’t make it, ask them to email your submissions—print them out, and file them away for a future date.

12. Make your party treats self-serve.

Set up everything from drinks to dessert in advance so you can tell guests to help themselves, leaving you to focus on your child and having fun. For younger guests, prep cut-up fruit, applesauce pouches, and cups of Cheerios or snack crackers. For adults, a charcuterie board, crudites, and antipasto are always popular nibbles.

13. Keep it short and sweet.

Little people get overstimulated quickly and can’t handle too much of a good thing. Limit your party to two hours or less so everyone can leave on a positive note.

This dad’s hilarious method of gentle parenting involves making his kids cringe as punishment, and we’re 100% on board

Many of today’s parents have bought into gentle parenting—a parenting style where you guide and discipline your kids with a focus on their emotional development, setting clear boundaries and explaining your reasoning and decision-making so they can understand. There’s no age limit on gentle parenting—it can start when they’re infants and continue until they leave the nest. But one TikTok dad has come up with a new method for his older kids, and it’s total genius.

The dad, who goes by Ginger Jack on TikTok, calls his innovative technique “gentle parenting with malicious intent,” and TBH, that’s exactly what it is. In his video, he has the camera facing him as he talks to his older kids about doing their chores without giving him attitude, and that’s where the cringe comes in.

“New rule. Whenever one of you starts giving me attitude, I’m going to start hitting on mom,” he says, before turning to his partner and adding, “Hey there. sugar. How you doing, baby girl? How do you feel about another child? I could rub your ankles real good.”

Predictably, this has his kids absolutely screaming in the background. As he makes sexy kitten noises at their mom, the kids beg for mercy and swear up and down that they’ll do all their chores without another word of complaint.

As everyone with teens knows, this method is pretty much guaranteed to work. There’s nothing that grosses a teenager out more than the idea of their parents getting their flirt on. A look at the video’s comments confirms it.

“At that point, I’d deep clean the house, my soul and this Godforsaken world 😂😂😂” one commenter wrote. Another added, “As a 34-year-old, this would absolutely still work on me.”

So parents, there you have it. Take this method and use it responsibly (or irresponsibly, we won’t tell) and enjoy your clean house and well-behaved kids.

Kaley Cuoco took to social media to share a new photo of week-old baby Matilda

Kaley Cuoco appears to be settling right into motherhood—though it probably helps when your baby is this cute. After the Flight Attendant star and her boyfriend, Tom Pelphrey, welcomed their daughter Matilda last week, Cuoco took to Instagram to share a new photo of her little one, and you’re going to want to brace yourself for how dang cute this picture is.

Kaley Cuoco / Instagram

The photo shows little Matilda, wrapped in a pink blanket, gazing up at the camera with wide eyes. Cuoco shared the pic on her Instagram story, where she added a sticker reading, “Oh hello.”

The photo comes a week after Cuoco announced Matilda’s birth on social media. In an Instagram post, alongside a carousel of photos of the newborn and other family members, Cuoco wrote, “Introducing, Matilda Carmine Richie Pelphrey, the new light of our lives! We are overjoyed and grateful for this little miracle 💓 Thank you to the doctors, nurses, family, and friends who have helped us immensely over the last few days. We are blessed beyond belief 💗 @tommypelphrey didn’t think I could fall even more in love with you, but I did 💗”

The couple shared their pregnancy news back in October. Since Matilda was born, they’ve been keeping their fans up to date with photos and updates posted to Instagram, and a source close to them told People magazine that they’re “overjoyed and pretty obsessed with their baby girl.”

I mean, just look at her face. Who wouldn’t be obsessed?

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen welcomed their rainbow baby on January 13

The iconic singer was beaming while holding his daughter Esti, born earlier this month, in a picture posted to Instagram yesterday. Tucked into the crook of Legend’s arm, the newborn seems to be the spitting image of her famous father. “Our love,” wrote the famous hitmaker. His wife responded with ” eee, I love her.” Teigen also shared a closeup of Esti yesterday, and it’s an intimate look at the newborn snuggled up in a blanket with her mama. It’s pretty clear this sweet arrival has captured the entire family’s hearts from the start.

It’s clear that new big sister and brother Luna and Miles couldn’t be prouder! They got in on the action in a family photo taken by Teigen.

“She’s here! Esti Maxine Stephens – the house is bustling and our family could not be happier,” she wrote in the caption. “Daddy sheds nightly tears of joy seeing Luna and Miles so full of love, and I am learning you still need diapers with a c-section!? We are in bliss. Thank you for all the love and well wishes – we feel it all!”

John Legend shared the same photo on his Instagram account, saying, “On Friday, we welcomed Esti Maxine Stephens to our family, and our house is overflowing with love and joy. I’m in awe of Chrissy’s strength and resilience and I’m so thrilled to see how Luna and Miles embrace their baby sister. I’m so, so grateful, but that doesn’t seem like a big enough word…”

The couple suffered the loss of their third child, Jack, in 2020. They lost when Chrissy was 20 weeks pregnant, due to a partial placenta abruption. But after surviving such a shattering loss, they decided to try again. She started IVF treatments last year, and on August 3 took to Instagram to reveal she was pregnant.

“The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again,” she wrote. “1 billion shots later (in the leg lately, as u can see!) we have another on the way.”

Legend has mentioned “going for four.” Congratulations on a healthy, growing family.

Paris Hilton just revealed her baby boy’s name, and it has a special meaning to her

A month after welcoming her first baby with husband Carter Reum, Paris Hilton has revealed her new son’s name—and the special meaning behind it.

On the latest episode of her podcast, This Is Paris, Hilton read an excerpt from her memoir that revealed she came up with the name a decade ago.

“If all goes well, by the time you read this, Carter and I will have a baby boy. We plan to name him Phoenix, a name that I decided on years ago when I was searching cities, countries and states on a map looking for something to go with Paris and London,” she read. “Phoenix has a few good pop culture reference points, but more importantly it’s the bird that flames out and then rises from the ashes to fly again. I want my son to grow up knowing that disaster and triumph go around and come around throughout our lives. And that this should give us great hope for the future.”

Later in the episode, Hilton revealed that Phoenix’s middle name is Barron, after her grandfather, Barron Hilton.

“He was always my mentor. I looked up to my grandfather so much, and we were so close, and I miss him every day,” she explained. “So, I really wanted to honor him by having his name in my first son’s name. So there you go. My beautiful baby boy’s name is Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum.”

Last month, he heiress, actress, and “Stars Are Blind” singer announced the birth in an Instagram post, which showed her well-manicured hand holding a tiny baby hand. Fans were caught completely by surprise, since she never announced that they were expecting.

“You are already loved beyond words 💙” she wrote in the caption.

In a statement to People magazine, Hilton confirmed that she and Reum now share a baby boy, and revealed that they welcomed the baby via surrogate.

“It’s always been my dream to be a mother and I’m so happy that Carter and I found each other,” she said. “We are so excited to start our family together and our hearts are exploding with love for our baby boy.”

People contacted Hilton’s rep, but they gave no further comment. The baby’s name has not been revealed yet. The comments on Hilton’s Instagram post are filled with surprised—but excited—well wishes.

Chrissy Teigen, who recently welcomed a baby girl, wrote, “A BABY!!!!! congratulations so happy for you both!!?”

Heidi Montag, who also welcomed a baby back in November, added, “Ahhh!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!! 💙”

Hilton’s mom, Kathy Hilton, reshared the post on her Instagram story.

Hilton and Reum got engaged on her birthday in February last year, and they got married in November. Hilton has always been open about wanting to be a mother, even sharing that she had start the in vitro process when she appeared on the Trend Reporter podcast in January of last year.

“We have been doing the IVF so I can pick twins if I like. Kim (Kardashian) is actually the one who told me about that—I didn’t know anything about it,” she said at the time. “I am happy she told me that advice and introduced me to her doctor.”

Congratulations to Paris and the whole Hilton family!

Shemar Moore’s baby girl has arrived

Shemar Moore is officially a dad! He shared a first look at his newborn baby girl, Frankie, via Instagram on Wednesday morning. The S.W.A.T. actor was over the moon with his bundle of joy, writing “BABY GIRL in da building!!! Born January 24… at 3:38pm…. 7.1 Pounds… 20 inches…. 10 fingers n 10 toes… Already THE LOVE OF MY LIFE!! I’m a Girl Daddy!!!!” Moore’s rep shared the news that the actor and his partner, Jesiree Dizon, welcomed baby Frankie on Tuesday, January 24th.

Moore first broke the joyful news on an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, then followed it up with a video posted to Instagram in which he and his family found out the sex of the baby together.

“I’m Shemar Moore, 52 and a half years old. My mother is in heaven, right now it’ll be the three-year anniversary on February 8,” Moore explained in the clip, which was released ahead of the episode’s air date. “And on February 8, I’m going to make one of her dreams come true because, in real life, Shemar Moore is about to be a daddy.”

While the talk show clip is sweet, it’s in the announcement video Moore posted on his Instagram that you can truly see how thrilled he was. In the video, he was beaming from ear to ear as he spoke about the little one he and his family were expecting.

“Today is the day,” he said in the video. “Your boy got butterflies. This is a special day. This is a legendary day.”

“Mama’s smiling from Heaven 🕊️” he wrote in the video’s caption. “Miracles happen … Here comes the BEST part of my life ❤️‍🔥”

One of the sweetest moments in the video came when Moore and his family watched a helicopter spread a cloud of pink smoke in the air. Right after cheering at the sight of the pink cloud, Moore can be seen holding up a “Girl Dad” tee shirt with a huge smile on his face.

It’s clear that 2023 is going to be an incredibly thrilling year for the Moore family, and we hope they’re enjoying every moment of the journey.

Kelly Clarkson may have just won the award for cutest mom-daughter “date night”

When your mom is Kelly Clarkson, it’s to be expected that that just comes with certain perks. For example, Clarkson attended Tuesday night’s People’s Choice Awards, but turned the glamorous, star-studded event into a mother-daughter date night with her eight-year-old mini-me, River Rose. Are we jealous of an eight-year-old right now? No comment.

Clarkson and River Rose spent the evening together, posing on the red carpet and rubbing elbows with Hollywood’s biggest stars. Clarkson wore a red ruffled gown, and River Rose was dressed to impress on the red carpet in a shiny gold dress. The two posed with celebs like Mariska Hargitay, as if this night could get any cooler. Not only did River Rose get to attend an A-list event with her momma by her side, both of them dressed to the nines, but she also got to meet Olivia Benson herself? That’s one lucky kiddo.

Todd Williamson/E! Entertainment/NBC

When her talk show won the Best Daytime Talk Show award, Clarkson took the stage and gave shout outs to River Rose, and her six-year-old son Remington, who was home sick the night of the event.

“Thank you all so much, this is awesome,” she said onstage. “I’m having a date night with my daughter, River Rose. And, Remy, I know you’re home, you’re not feeling well, baby. But this is cool to get, and thank you Niecy [Nash] for hosting my show while I was sick.”

Mark Von Holden/E! Entertainment/NBC

Clarkson continued, “This is very cool to get. This is where the people vote, and for the last 20 years that’s been my career. This is very important to me and this is why I have career: because y’all have been supporting me for that long.”

At the end of her speech, Clarkson hinted at even more fun ahead for her sweet date night with River Rose.

“Thank you all so much, I’m going to go have ice cream with my baby girl!” she said. Ending this event with a sweet treat? We can truly think of nothing better.

Rebel Wilson surprised fans with the announcement, which also included the baby’s name and her first public photo

Rebel Wilson is a mom!

The Pitch Perfect star, 42, surprised fans when she announced on Instagram that she’s welcomed a baby girl, her first child, via a surrogate.

“Beyond proud to announce the birth of my first child, Royce Lillian, born this past week via surrogate 💗,” Wilson wrote in a heartfelt caption that’s just bursting with the kind of joy and love that only a brand new mom knows. “I can’t even describe the love I have for her, she’s a beautiful miracle!”

The announcement included the first public photo of Wilson’s new bundle of joy, who looks absolutely precious in a pink onesie, with one hand partially covering her face while she sleeps.

Wilson continued in the caption, “I am forever grateful to everyone who has been involved, (you know who you are), this has been years in the making…but particularly wanted to thank my gorgeous surrogate who carried her and birthed her with such grace and care. Thank you for helping me start my own family, it’s an amazing gift. The BEST gift!!”

The star also shared some of her hopes for her new baby’s future, writing, “I am ready to give little Roycie all the love imaginable. I am learning quickly.”

She also gave a shout out to other moms, adding at the end of the caption, “much respect to all the Mums out there! Proud to be in your club. 💗💗💗”

The comments were filled with congratulations for Wilson, including sweet messages from fans and other stars like Taika Waititi, Alison Brie, and Michael Bay.

While Wilson kept her surrogacy journey under wraps from the public eye, she’s been open in past interviews about wanting to be a mom.

“I would love to have a family. I’m just going for it by myself at the moment because of the biological clock,” she told People magazine in 2020. “If I meet the right person, great, and then they can fit in with whatever happens.”

Earlier this year, Wilson went public with her relationship with fashion and jewelry designer Ramona Agruma, writing on Instagram, “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince … but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess 💗🌈💗 #loveislove”

Congrats to Rebel Wilson on growing her family!
