There’s a reason posed newborn photography goes viral. Tiny babies dressed up as characters from Disney’s Toy Story are next-level adorable and also pretty hilarious—but it’s definitely not for everyone. If giving your new addition the Anne Geddes treatment by transforming them into your favorite flower, zoo animal, or item from the produce section feels like too much too soon, you’re probably planning more of a lifestyle shoot for your newborn photos (translation: more organic, less props). It’s a comforting way to ease you and your babe into life in front of the camera, because let’s be honest: the idea of doing any photoshoot probably feels super daunting right now.

To help make the process as natural as possible (because those photos will be worth it!), we spoke with baby and family photographer Kayla Robins of The Robins Nest. She shared her best tips for lifestyle and DIY shoots, whether you’re taking monthly milestone photos or just trying to get a snapshot of your newborn’s life at home to share with loved ones on the Tinybeans app. Here’s what she had to say.

Don’t feel like you have to rush into it

While most newborn photography is shot in the first few weeks after birth, don’t worry if you want to wait a bit. Aiming for when they’re about one month old gives your baby’s personality time to develop and you’ll be able to get a mix of portraits as they go from sleepy to alert.

Let your baby call the shots

It’s important to “follow the baby’s lead,” says Kayla. Don’t sweat the small stuff, as lifestyle photography’s aim is to capture the family as they are. It’s all about genuine interactions between you and your baby, so shake off any pressure to get the “perfect” shot. (Spoiler: There’s no such thing.)

Choose your call time strategically

Avoid any prolonged opportunity for fussiness by having your baby fed and dressed in their first outfit when you arrive at the shoot so you can jump right in. Scheduling a session in the morning works best as it allows for any and all breaks your baby needs to feed, change, cry, etc. without the risk of losing daylight.

Don’t dress to impress

You’re going to be doing a lot of online shopping in the coming year, but those intricate outfits perfectly suited to a special occasion? Now is not the time. A plain and simple onesie is the perfect place to start, and if you want to get fancy you can easily layer outfits on without disturbing the baby too much. Footed sleepers are a lifesaver at this age, but keep in mind that they’ll hide what is undeniably one of your baby’s most adorable, photo-worthy features—their toesies.

Aim for quiet on the set

Some babies might not be ready for their close-up, so making sure the shoot environment is calm and quiet will help them settle in. Kayla’s hot tip for capturing the perfect sleeping shot is to “rub in between their eyebrows to get them into a deeper sleep.” And the secret to more alert shots? Stripes. “I wear them so the baby can focus on the contrast.”

Know that little touches go a long way

Okay, so lifestyle newborn photography isn’t always propless. Kayla suggests including a few sentimental pieces in the shoot. Maybe a special blanket or toy, a gift from a loved one, or—even better—a beloved item from your own childhood that can weave even more love into this milestone moment.

Break out your own camera

If you’d rather embrace a DIY approach to newborn photography—or just don’t feel like leaving your house or having anyone come in—here are a few tips to help guide you behind the camera.

  • Light is key, so position your baby close to a window to maximize natural light.
  • With your baby lying on their back, shoot directly from above for a full-body view and then zoom in on their adorable little hands, toes, and face.
  • For a different perspective, get down low to their eye level.
  • Babies love to cuddle (and we love to cuddle them), which luckily makes for a beautiful shot. Prop their tiny body on a parent or loved one’s shoulder and have them turn their back to you so you can just see the baby’s head and face.

Whether you go pro or DIY, you won’t regret it

“This stage is so fleeting and the emotion and energy of a newborn session, especially with a first baby, really shines through the images,” says Kayla. “You can always take more photos as they grow, but you can never go back in time!”

Make sure to capture all those adorable newborn moments—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

When you’re a sleep-deprived new parent, how are you supposed to remember when you last fed your baby, how long they slept, or even when they were immunized and for what? Especially during those first few months when leaving the house freshly showered and in spit up-free clothing is considered a near miracle. Here’s the good news. You don’t have to. Some of the best baby tracking apps out there help exhausted parents stay on top of every milestone, feeding, diaper change, nap, and so much more.

Think flowers, candy, stuffies, and stickers

Everybody loves the baby milestone blanket, but maybe consider these other creative and super-cute baby milestone photo ideas that show their growth in the first year. Add your unique spin to one of the following set-ups; if you’re short on time or not the creative type (we get it), we’ve included props you can purchase to add flair to your photos.

Flowers and Leaves

This is one of the sweetest baby milestone photo ideas we’ve seen. Teresa, a custom artist and illustrator based in Southern California, surrounded her daughter Elena in beautiful blooms and leaves to show how she blossomed each month. Create seasonal scenes as she did, or place one perfect rose or daisy next to your child the first month and then add a flower each month as a visual indicator of your child’s age.

Mini Blocks

picture of blocks that people can use in baby milestone photo ideas

These mini blocks give you lots of flexibility with how you display your message. Add a heart or a holiday symbol and stack the blocks vertically or lay them side by side in a pattern. Long after your child has hit the one-year mark, use these blocks to spell out your child's age in years or what grade they're in.

Animal-Themed Baby Milestone Cards

Pose your child on a neutral background to make these wood safari animal-themed cards stand out. Each disc is double-sided and features adorable giraffes, lions, and lions, and there's even a card announcing the arrival of your sweet bundle.

Available at Etsy shop Brickhousegifts, $28

Monthly Milestone Chalkboard

This chalkboard comes in two sizes (9x12 and 12x16) and features cute, hand-drawn animals. Add milestones, favorites, and other important baby data, and then choose a light-colored, neutral background and take a close-up shot so the text is readable.

Available at Etsy shop Image Ability, $20

Seasonal Props

Seasonal props that show the baby’s age in months convey the passing of time and will make for an amazing collage to commemorate that first year. Family blogger Chelsae in Tampa Bay took this photo of her daughter Evelyn with these autumn leaves for November, and she used candy hearts in February and beach toys in June.

Sleeping Baby Pictures

We love this baby milestone photo idea because there’s nothing sweeter than a sleeping infant. And with each month, you’ll appreciate not having to force a smile in each month’s photo. With a sleeping baby, you can take the shot quickly, and your child will always look beautiful and relaxed. If you’re worried about your child waking up, take photos at the end of naptime rather than at night. A shortened nap is easier than getting a crying baby back to sleep at night.

Favorite Stuffie

Posing your child next to the same stuffed animal each month shows how big they’re growing. It also lends itself to seasonal-themed photos and shots of impromptu hugs with their fuzzy friends. This photo from Alice Morais of Little Pearls Photography, a maternity, newborn, and family photographer based in Kennesaw, GA, captures both a seasonal theme and a sweet moment with a stuffed animal.

Photo Banner

a banner to hold pictures, a cute baby milestone photo idea

Put your favorite photo from each month in this self-editable photo template. You can also record the date and a short message. Once you've printed them out, attach them with a clothespin to raffia or ribbon to create a beautiful photo banner. When you update the banner with a new card each month, take a photo to show family and friends your baby's life in pictures.

Available at Etsy shop partiara, $9 for a self-editable template.

Everyday Items

iStock

You don't need to be crafty or buy expensive props to create cute monthly baby photos. You need a gorgeous baby (check!) and to be creative with items you already have. Pose your babe with common items like diapers, onesies, pacifiers, or food (cupcakes are a new-mom fave). Spell out how old your baby is in months, or place the items around your child. Use the same prop every month or switch it up based on your baby's preferences.

Sports Stickers

Dress your baby in a solid-colored onesie and pop on one of these sporty stickers for consistent and cute photos each month. Or, get creative with where you place the sticker, like on a baseball cap, favorite stuffie, or diaper as your baby crawls away from you. If your older baby is too busy to sit still for a photo with you, a sticker gives you lots of flexibility on where, and how, to take an awesome photo.

Available at Etsy shop Custom Print Gallery, $10.

Inkless Foot and Handprints

Printed on special paper, this pack of baby milestone cards gives you those coveted baby fingers and toes, but with zero mess.

My husband and I had our first baby 6 months ago, meaning our transformation into lovestruck zombies is nearly complete. We’re obsessed with our little squish—otherwise known as Nathan—and I have officially become that parent who won’t stop sniffing her kid. (I’m sorry, but where does that sweet baby smell come from and why has no one found a way to bottle it up?!)

Of course, we’re not the only ones who can’t get enough of N. As first-time grandparents, my mother and father-in-law, who live a few hours away, don’t want to miss one minute of the “action.” That word is in quotes because, at this point, there is minimal movement to report. And yet! What happened today? Where are the pics? Send more videos! The ping! ping! ping! of text messages was relentless. “Sleep when your baby sleeps,” they say. But these people clearly did not have a Nana who demanded CNN-style breaking news coverage of their grandchild.

I love my in-laws—I really do. I’m beyond grateful for their enthusiasm, but also I need. some. space. I don’t necessarily have the energy for endless back-and-forths while navigating the eat, play, sleep, repeat loop that is my current existence. The fewer asks of me at this point, the better (for all of us!).

Thankfully, Tinybeans offered a brilliant solution: I set up the app to automatically send Nana emails with the latest baby photos her son and I take. She might not be tech-savvy, but she’s a pro at checking her inbox. Now every time Nathan flashes a gummy grin or fakes us out like he’s gonna crawl but nope—maybe next time, suckers!—Nana gets to witness it all going down.

As for my father-in-law, he’s a little more tech-savvy, but whatever it is has to be extremely user-friendly. Before Tinybeans, whenever he wanted to ask about N, it meant a loooonng phone call (or voicemail I didn’t have time to listen to). Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy our conversations. PopPop knows how to tell a good story. But that reminiscing sometimes crosses over into lengthy TED Talk territory. Tinybeans came to the rescue again by allowing him to comment on photos to his heart’s content without always picking up the phone. Plus, it’s fun for us to sit down collapse on the couch and read his incredible notes. We love that Nathan will be able to look back on the comments left by his grandparents one day.

Side note: There’s also the fact that the app pulls double duty as a digital memory book. We’ve used it to document milestones like his weight after doctor’s appointments, an Olympics-worthy front-to-back roll, and his first smile that was probably (maybe?) not gas. Not only has it been super easy to log these fun moments, but doing so helps us be more “in the moment” wherever we are and whoever we’re with—including grandparents IRL. It’s cool looking back to see how far N has come, appreciating every step of his journey and not missing a beat.

Honestly, Tinybeans didn’t just save my sanity; it strengthened our family bonds. Our time with Nana and PopPop is spent making new memories instead of frantically providing updates. And my hubs and I can savor (almost) every sleep-deprived moment with our baby while sharing our joy with the people we love most.

Want to give it a go yourself? Download the Tinybeans app here and watch all those “ooohs” and “ahhhhs” pour in.

There’s nothing like monthly milestone photos to help you and your family see just how much your baby is changing and growing—and there’s no end to the cute ways you can showcase your little bean. But if you’re going to the effort (and by the way, no judgment if you opt out), you want the shots to look good, which can be a challenge with a sleepy newborn or a squirming six-month-old. We asked baby photographer Annie Brennand of Bee’s Portrait Photography for her best tips on getting pics you’ll be proud to share on Tinybeans (and ogle nostalgically for many years to come).

Set a monthly reminder

mom of newborn should know the danger of sharenting

You have enough on your mind raising a tiny human, so use technology (that is, your phone) to remind you to take the photo each month.

Choose the time of day strategically

A hungry or tired baby isn’t likely to cooperate. Plan your photoshoot for a time of day when your baby is usually pretty happy (probably after a solid nap and a good feed, but every baby is different).

Opt for natural light

“The best lighting is always natural light,” says Brennand. She recommends placing your baby close to a big window at whatever time of day the light shines in the most and turning off your overhead lights, which can cause an unnatural, unwanted color tint. Be sure to avoid a common lighting mistake: putting your baby between you and your light source (for example, taking a photo of them with their back to the sun or window). Too often, this will result in muddy-looking shadows and colors.

Pick an outfit with warm, neutral colors

Your little one will look adorable no matter what outfit you choose, but some colors are better on camera than others, says Brennand. She leans towards warm, neutral, muted clothing, especially whites, beiges, sage greens or muted blues, which she says brighten up the face and edit well if you choose to tweak the images afterwards. Consider dressing yourself in white, too, as your clothing will act as a light reflector to brighten the light in the space. “It will give that extra boost of light to your images,” says Brennand.

Embrace your own silliness

One of the best ways to get babies to look into the lens and smile for their monthly photos is a classic: peekaboo! “I use my camera in place of my hands and peek my face out either side, back and forth, and make the silliest noises imaginable,” says Brennand. She also recommends parents use toys like stuffies and rattles to keep kids’ attention. But her top tip for parents is to be over-the-top silly. “Don’t be afraid to dance around and get goofy!” she says. “My best photos come from parents losing all dignity behind the lens.”

Choose props judiciously

a baby lying next to a chalkboard with his age, size, milestones and things he loves for a monthly baby photo
Scribble and Chip Etsy shop

What should appear in the photo other than your baby? Brennand recommends using props that reflect your baby’s personality or are favorite items. “I always want to capture the true essence of a little one, and having their favorite items beside them reflects who they are and helps them feel comfortable.” Another option is using visual month markers, such as onesie stickers, printed blankets or letterboards. Using the exact same props every month will help you see differences in your baby, and will also help the photos look cohesive when grouped together. No matter what you choose, don’t go overboard with props, or you risk drawing attention away from your baby.

Use your phone’s fancy features

Most phones have easy-to-use features that can take your photos from good to great. Portrait mode is an easy way to elevate your images, for example, and iPhones’ live photos let you select the very best still within the short video. You can also play around with exposure and brightness, which will have a big impact on the final product. “Most iPhones and Androids allow you to correct the exposure before taking the image, which is really helpful in ensuring the highlights are not too bright,” says Brennand. On an iPhone, touch the screen anywhere until a yellow box appears and simply slide your finger up and down on the sun icon next to the yellow box.

Brennand’s final tip is one to keep in mind throughout your kid’s childhood: Get in the photos, mamas! “Monthly photos of just your baby are lovely, but make sure you document yourself with them at these stages too,” she says. “Setting up your self-timer on your phone and getting proof-of-mom is just as important.”

While getting to know your new arrival, there’s no better time to download the Tinybeans app. The secure platform allows you to share special moments with friends and family near and far and puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their littles.

With each passing year comes more photos, family videos, sentimental keepsakes, and important documents to revisit from time to time. Digitizing these mementos is a great solution for keeping them protected at all costs—because life happens, say an accidental spill, a flooded basement or a lost laptop. Plus: having access to them whenever and wherever you are is a win-win for busy parents.

Storing files can be tricky, though, and you may not know how to begin. That’s where Microsoft OneDrive comes in. As Microsoft’s cloud storage solution, parents can save documents, photos, videos, music and other files to the cloud—which means they’re available to access anytime from any device. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that your documents are protected from potential malicious attacks and are always available in the cloud.

If you’re still uncertain, here are six reasons you should go digital and how Microsoft OneDrive can help you get there.

1. Easily Back Up Physical Documents

Think back to all the moments as a child when you’d watch your parents scour the house for, like your birth certificate or immunization records. Now imagine what it would have been like if your parents could have simply opened an app to find their digital copies.

Fortunately, you can add OneDrive to your parenting tool kit and erase hours’ worth of searching. With the tap of a button, quickly access all of your family’s most valuable documents whenever and wherever you need them. Not only can you keep your original records securely tucked away at home, but you can also give them a second life. If something ever happens to your hard copies, like normal wear and tear or misplacement, you can have peace of mind knowing your files are still safe and accessible across your devices.

2. Protect Important Files

Have peace of mind knowing that your treasured files remain secure and private once digitized, and that you have a backup (plan) if anything ever happens. With a Microsoft 365 subscription, OneDrive provides an added layer of digital defense from malware, in which you’ll receive alerts if ransomware, malicious attack, file corruption, or deletion is detected. You can recover your files if they are ever comprised, up to 30 days after the incident.

You can also up the security of stored photo albums and sensitive records by making them password-protected, so no one can view them unless you share the code. You can set expiration dates on these links as well to limit the amount of time someone has access to it.

3. Access Your Records Anytime, Anywhere

Whether you’re traveling and your wallet gets lost or stolen or you’re away from home and an emergency arises, it’ll make all the difference in these stressful times to have your files at your fingertips.

No matter if you have internet, OneDrive allows you to grab your digital copies and share or edit them directly from your cellphone, laptop, tablet or desktop computer. Either update your cloud settings to enable offline accessibility (which we highly recommend!) or download the documents to your device.

4. Securely Share Family Mementos

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through old albums on your phone admiring your children’s baby photos—or is that just us? While you can add these special memories to your OneDrive account, you can also share them directly with family and friends with a unique link.

You can even allow your network to edit or add comments on any shared photos, videos, PDFs or documents. If someone makes a change, you’ll be informed with real-time notifications.

5. Preserve Precious Keepsakes

Think back to all the adorable art projects your toddler has made in daycare, like that super sweet Mother’s Day bouquet painted from their handprints. Instead of adding them to the bottomless pit of that one kitchen drawer, or overcrowding your refrigerator doors, scan these cherished keepsakes and store them on your OneDrive.

Not only can you look back on them in years to come when your kiddos are older, but you can also share them now with grandma and grandpa who can’t get enough of those stick figure masterpieces.

6. Keep Your Documents Better Organized

Although you may have an organizational system at home that you feel is down pat, it can still be a time-consuming process to sift through folder after folder to find what you’re looking for. By having an electronic version of your filing cabinet that you can tap into whenever you need, you’re able to locate what you need within seconds.

You can also find respite in decluttering your home office and leaving space for other items that need a home.

Key Documents to Store Electronically

As parents, there are so many documents to keep track of, from birth certificates and health insurance cards to passports, your house deed and the list goes on. We’ve compiled our recommended list of files that you should back up to your OneDrive to keep your family protected at all costs.

If you’re in search of an added layer of security for your most sensitive files, turn to OneDrive’s Personal Vault. As a protected folder within OneDrive, Personal Vault requires double authentication to access your files, such as your fingerprint, face, PIN or a one-time code sent to you directly through email or SMS. With the unpredictability of life, it’s important to give these documents a second line of defense.

  • Legal Identification: Passport, driver’s license, identification card, birth certificate, adoption decree, immigration certificates and forms, social security card, and military identification
  • House records: Titles and deeds to property, lease and loan agreements
  • Vehicle documents: Registration and title, and insurance policy
  • Tax documents: W2s and tax returns
  • Medical records: Health insurance card, vaccine and immunization records, medical bills, will, prescriptions
  • Investment records: 401(k) and mutual funds
  • Other assets: Marriage license, divorcee decree, life insurance policies, education transcripts, and graduation certificates

Are ready to digitize everything sitting in your closet? Head to Microsoft.com and get started with OneDrive. So when life happens, you can feel comfort in knowing your precious family treasures are safe, protected and accessible wherever life takes you.

These baby shadow box ideas are simple to make

A newborn shadow box is a beautiful way to display baby treasures like the hospital ID bracelet, birth announcement, going-home outfit, and first teeny hat. A baby shadow box is quick to DIY (just three steps!) and makes a special addition to your nursery. You’ll never forget the details of the amazing day you met your babe.

Step 1: Gather Your Keepsakes

Taking Care of Monkey Business

First, decide what to display. You could include a sonogram, baby's first photo, hospital ID bracelet, hospital hat, first socks or booties, baby's going-home outfit, the first pacifier, birth announcement, tiny footprints, crib shoes, or a piece of a beloved swaddling blanket. We love what Alli from Taking Care of Monkey Business included in hers (see above).

Step 2: Buy the Supplies

Or So She Says

Head to your favorite craft store (or open Amazon) to pick up items for your keepsake shadow box. First, you'll need the shadow box itself. We like the Studio Decor 4-Way Adjustable Shadow Box because it's flexible in depth so it can accommodate larger items like crib shoes or lovies. It's also sized well for this project at 12 inches square.

You may also want to include small wooden letters for your baby's initials. To add color or a pattern, use scrapbooking paper for your background.

And finally, you'll need something to hold your keepsakes in place inside the shadow box. Try a few pretty pearlized pins or mini clothespins so you don't have to cover your keepsakes in glue. Visit the Or So She Says blog to see how Aimee put her shadow boxes together.

Make sure to capture all the giggles—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Your guests will love these baby shower game ideas

When you’re planning the activities for a baby shower, you’re looking for games that are easy to learn, fun to play and not likely to make guests cringe. These games are all that and more.

cuppacocoa

The prize for this game goes to the mom-to-be, who gets a homemade alphabet book crafted by her favorite people. Let guests choose what image to draw for each letter or, if you think they'll need inspiration, choose a theme for the book (it can even match the shower theme). Stop by the cuppacocoa blog for a free template and full instructions.

Baby Guess Who?

Maximum fun with minimal prep work: Guests email you baby photos of themselves prior to the shower, and you print them up, number each one, and create a display on a wall or table. Print out numbered sheets where guests can try to match each guest to the pictures.

Year One Bucket List

Keababies

There are so many memorable things parents can do with their baby in the first year, but with baby brain, it can be hard to remember to do them. Have guests write down one first-year bucket-list item (from blowing. bubbles to visiting the zoo) on a note card and drop it into a basket for the mom-to-be to take home. Bonus points for using a diaper caddy as the basket, like the one above from Keababies, since the mom will find this invaluable for diaper changes.

Clothing Decorating Station

Lovely Indeed

Fill up baby’s wardrobe with customized outfits using blogger Lovely Indeed’s decorating station idea. Provide solid-colored baby clothes in a variety of styles and sizes, fabric markers, iron-on designs, and an iron. Your friends will have fun designing these tiny outfits, and Mom will get one-of-a-kind baby gear made with love.

Wishes for Baby

Art Bar

Ask every guest to share a wish for the new baby in this sweet idea from the Art Bar blog. Use pastel card stock and the blog’s free animal templates, or use scrapbook paper and your own shapes for the cards. Hang ribbon and small clothespins on your wall so guests can post their wishes for everyone to read.

Candy in a Baby Bottle

For a super easy game, fill baby bottles with a set amount of small candies, like sprinkles. Place a bottle at each table with a note that asks guests to guess the number of candies. This game doubles as an icebreaker as tablemates try to figure out the exact number. At each table, the person with the closest guess can win the candy.

Play-Doh Creations

Give each guest a container of Play-Doh and 15 minutes to sculpt a baby-related masterpiece (like a baby, pacifier or bottle). Let the mother-to-be pick her favorite to win a prize.

Hand-Crafted Baby Blocks

Fireflies and Mudpies

Ask shower guests to show off their artistic sides by decorating baby blocks. Provide blank wooden blocks, markers, stickers and more (Fireflies and Mudpies has instructions for making these textured blocks) and let your guests get creative. After the party, paint the blocks with a natural wood varnish for a special gift for baby.

Children's Book Quiz

For a book-loving mom-to-be, set up a quiz with trivia from classic children’s books. Or, create a fill-in-the-blank quiz with titles of children’s books. This is a good way to get guests chatting, as they remember their own childhood favorites.

Match the Socks

Cheski Sock Company

All you need to play this game are a bunch of new baby socks in different colors, patterns, and sizes and a cute laundry basket. We love the sock bundles from Cheski Sock Company, shown above. Throw the unpaired socks into the basket, set a timer, and have each guest match as many as they can in one minute. Mom-to-be gets a laundry basket and a great sock collection for baby, and your friends get a workout and some laughs.
