So you have a newly-mobile little one. An official toddler. It’s a whole new world for both of you and while you’re baby-proofing all the things and chasing them down the hall, it’s also time to stop (you know, when they’re asleep) and consider what first walker shoes to start them out with. Luckily, there are so many baby shoes for new walkers to choose from, so you’ll be able to find the perfect pair or two for their little feet.

It’s quite possibly the most kid-friendly hotel chain we know of

The Loews Regency New York may be a luxury hotel with a posh Park Avenue address (it’s nestled between scores of ritzy residences and high-end shops), but step inside and it’s as down-to-earth as you can get.

Consider this: When we arrived at the hotel on a recent afternoon, the four of us bleary-eyed after a cross-country flight, the bellman handed my kids “Loews Loves Families” balloons and initiated an impromptu game of balloon-style hackey sack. Right there in the lobby.

And that’s the kind of place this is: Upscale, but friendly. Fancy—but not so much that you feel unwelcome when you walk in with a mom bun and a gaggle of kids all shouting, “Pass it! Pass it!” while they abandon their bags on the marble floors so they can play balloon-ball with the bellman.

So if you were ever intimated at the idea of taking your kids to New York City, here’s where that worry stops. From its family-friendly location (playgrounds galore!!) to the special perks for kids and pets (snacks and treats for both!), here’s everything you need to know about the Loews Regency New York—and how the “Loews Loves Families” program makes it the perfect home base when visiting the Big Apple.

Rooms That Let You Have Your Space (with great views)

All of the Regency’s 379 guestrooms are spacious… at least, for New York City standards, (this is Manhattan, after all). Standard King rooms start at 250 square feet, with suites and apartments going up to 5,520 square feet. All guest rooms have elegant furnishings, city views, and uber-comfy beds with crisp white linens, and overstuffed pillows. There are smart TVs, personalized temperature controls, electronic window shades, plenty of built-in power outlets, bath and body products from the posh Julien Farel spa downstairs, and 24-hour room service.

Of course, nothing impressed my kids as much as the flat-screen TVs built into the bathroom mirrors (these come standard in all rooms). Suffice it to say, my kids spent a lot of time in the bathroom.

The Suite Life: If you want to splurge (no understatement, since larger suites can cost upwards of $1,500 a night during peak season), Loews’ one and two-bedroom suites will have you feeling like New York royalty, with spacious apartment-style accommodations boasting full living rooms, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and upscale furnishings.

There are also six themed “Signature Suites” that feel more like opulent Upper East Side apartments than standard hotel rooms. These include the “Uptown Bohemian Suite,” the “Nate Berkus Apartment,” the “Bespoke Suite,” the “Classic 1970s Apartment,” the “Glamour Suite,” and the “Pop Art Suite.” Insiders say these suites—which feature furniture, art, and decor to reflect the various themes—are often booked by locals who need a luxe home-away-from-home while their  Manhattan townhouses are renovated.

Fun Fact: The Loews Regency New York is the first Loews hotel in the country, opening in 1963.

“Loews Loves Families” Perks for Kids

Traveling with kids takes planning, and the Loews Loves Families program—which is available in all 26 Loews hotels and resorts across North America—wants to make that part a bit easier by supplying things that you know you’ll need but don’t want to pack. The hotel also prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere, and this is reflected all over the hotel, including the dining rooms, where kids are always welcome.

Families at the Loews Regency (or any Loews, for that matter) can expect:

Baby & kid supplies: This includes complimentary cribs and baby bath amenity kits as well as night lights, bed rails, playpens, baby bathtubs, humidifiers, stuffed animals, kettles, and noise machines.

Complimentary baby proofing: If you’d like the hotel staff to cover the outlets before your arrival, just let the hotel know before you check in.

Welcome amenities: Upon check-in, kids will get a welcome amenity (balloons and snacks for us, but smaller kids may get stuffed animals, coloring books, and locally-themed goodies). You can also request cookies and juice be delivered to your room upon your arrival.

*Above items are subject to property availability.

Food kids will eat—in an environment grown-ups appreciate: If you want to dine in, there are kid-friendly menus at the restaurant (and in-room dining) that include fresh organic baby food for your smallest foodie, as well as kid faves like burgers, pancakes, and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Good to Know: Breakfast at the Regency Bar and Grill is a veritable Who’s Who of Manhattan’s social and business scene (it’s the home of the original “Power Breakfast,” which Forbes magazine described as a place “at which the city’s movers and shakers get in an early morning meeting before limo-ing off to Wall Street, City Hall or some media conglomerate.”). So if you want to dine at the hotel, we recommend breakfast.

Free coffee and tea in the lobby: This one’s all for Mom and Dad. But, you know you’ll need it.

Insider’s Tip: Use the concierge! When we needed to find a kid-friendly restaurant that would be good for the grandparents, the concierge found the perfect place and made the reservations for us. He also helped us even before we got there by recommending the best way to get to the hotel from Newark Airport. Be sure to reach out before you embark on your trip by emailing regencyconcierge@loewshotels.com.

And… Bring your Dog!

Want to bring your dog with you (we did)?  No problem! The “Loews Loves Pets” program will treat your furbaby like the VIP she is, with silver bowls, treats, doggie bags, and pet placemats in your room when you arrive. You’ll also get a doorknob hanger that notifies the cleaning crew not to come in (or to come in carefully, if that’s what you prefer) when your dog is left behind.

The hotel can also provide everything your pet needs, including plush pet beds, litter boxes, scratching posts, pet toys, leashes, collars, and more. Want to take your dog with you on your adventures? Ask the front desk for a dog-walking map plus a list of pet-friendly restaurants nearby. Or, if you need someplace for your pooch to play while you’re away, the hotel has connections to nearby pet-walking and pet-sitting services.

Note: The pet fee is $50 and the hotel can only accommodate two pets per room.

Location, Location, Location!

If you’re not from here, you might think Manhattan would be a scary place for littles—The noise! The crowds! The bumper-to-bumper traffic that makes catching a cab a bonafide skill! But in this largely residential neighborhood filled with designer stores and swanky brownstones, you’ll find nothing of the sort. Instead, there are wide open sidewalks, tree-lined streets, and nobody anywhere trying to sell you a double-decker bus tour (save that for Times Square).

The best part? Central Park is just two blocks away, and it’s the perfect place to let your kids stretch their newfound city legs. So put on your walking shoes and check out these nearby spots:

Central Park’s Billy Johnson Playground (5-minute walk): Stroll into the park to find this magical playground inspired by the natural landscape of Central Park, featuring a miniature rock bridge, numerous water sprinklers, and a 45-foot granite slide built into the existing hillside.

Related: NYC’s Best Playgrounds from Manhattan to the Bronx

Central Park Zoo (5-minute walk): A 7-acre zoo nestled into the southeast corner of Central Park (just two blocks from the hotel!), featuring animals from tropical, temperate, and polar zones from around the world. Don’t miss the Tisch Children’s Zoo, where kids can get up close and personal with the goats, sheep, cow, and pot-bellied pigs. For visiting information, click here.

Heckscher Playground (10-minute walk): This is Central Park’s oldest and largest playground, and it’s a must-see!  The sprawling playground features multiple swings, slides, and an extensive water feature with elevated walkways connected to the ground via ladders and slides. Even cooler, all of it is set against Umpire Rock, one of Central Park’s most dramatic rock outcrops that kids will love scurrying up and around.

Subway to… the rest: Of course, Manhattan is a small island, so anything you want to see is always just a few subway stops away (there’s a subway stop three blocks from the hotel, or you can ask the bellman to call you a taxi). Iconic spots such as the Empire State Building, FAO Schwartz toy store, Rockefeller Center, and the Theater District are all less than 2 miles away, or you can take the E Train from the Upper East Side to Lower Manhattan to check out One World Trade Center Observatory, which offers a spectacular view from the 100th through 102nd floor—and a 47-second, LED projection-assisted “Sky Pod” ride to get there that will be the highlight of your trip.

Now that baby’s crawling it’s time to start babyproofing the house

Traffic may slow to a crawl, but when a baby starts crawling, they’re zooming. Your former stationary buddy is now heading headfirst down the stairs or digging into your purse, and you’re feeling like you’ll never get a moment to yourself again. Keep kids safe from your home’s danger zones with these clever babyproofing tricks and activities.

1. Safety First
A crawling baby means a new round of babyproofing. Padding furniture corners, covering electrical outlets, tying up loose cords, and installing stairway gates are an excellent start, but there are plenty of less obvious spots that need to be secured. Add locks to toilets and cabinets or doors that conceal electronics, toiletries, cleaners, or glassware, and secure large furniture to the wall to prevent them from tipping over. Pro tip: To get a better sense of what could harm your baby, sit down and lie down on the floor to see your home from a baby’s level. You’ll discover sharp edges, dangling cords, and other potential hazards more easily.

2. Toilet Paper Tube Trick
Crawling babies have more access to items they can put in their mouths, whether that’s dog food or an older sibling’s LEGOs. Not sure what’s a choking hazard? Use the toilet paper tube trick. If the item fits through the tube, keep it out of baby’s reach.

3. Skin Saver
Hard surfaces can damage a crawling baby’s delicate skin. Rough floors, concrete playgrounds or even carpets can cause scraped, bruised or raw knees from frequent contact. Save your baby’s knees—and pants—by slipping leg warmers or baby knee pads, like the cute ones above from Simply Kids, over baby’s legs. Pro tip: Baby knee pads are also good protection for wobbly toddlers who take frequent tumbles.

4. Staying Alert
Any time you venture out and about with a mobile baby, you’ll have to stay on kid watch like your baby’s life depends on it (because it does). Even new crawlers are shockingly quick. If you have any doubts about whether you can stay fully focused on your little explorer, play it safe and strap baby into a stroller or carrier.

5. Timing Is Everything
If you find yourself having trouble accomplishing tasks with a baby on the loose, adjust your schedule where you can. For example, cut down on time in the kitchen by relying on meal planning or quick prep and slow cooker recipes. Consider showering at night after baby’s bedtime and saving certain tasks for naptime or moments when you have someone else to watch your little mover.

6. Try Redirection
A crawling or toddling baby can leave quite a trail as they explore everything in reach. Keep a small basket of baby-safe toys and books in each room to capture their attention when necessary and keep them away from cereal boxes, markers, and other major messes.

7. Get Germ-Aware
Keeping a crawling baby clean when you’re away from home can be a challenge. Keep a stash of wipes and sanitizer in your diaper bag for outings, and a change of clothes in case of bigger messes.

8. Keep a Surprise Toy Stash
How can you entertain your little cruiser when you need to shower, take a phone call or respond to emails? Hide a stash of “surprise” toys that stay out of your regular toy rotation. Pulling out the basket of “new” trinkets can keep your mobile mini-me entertained for a few minutes while you take care of business or relax for some much-needed me time.

9. Plan a Pool Party!
Turn your blow-up pool into a ball pit by adding colorful plastic balls. Your child will have room to move freely while exploring, and you’ll rest easy knowing baby is contained and entertained.

10. Cook Up Some Quiet
If trying to prep pasta primavera with baby running amok (or attached to your leg) sounds like a recipe for disaster, put your babe in the high chair to watch you. Sing songs, tell stories, or offer an assortment of finger foods to keep them entertained. If you want to pretend you have your own cooking show, we won’t tell anybody.

11. Relocate Your Belongings
If you find yourself frequently cleaning up a certain area—whether baby is obsessed with pulling books off of your shelves or shoes out of your closet—save yourself the constant cleanup and move those belongings upward on higher shelves. Consider this the flooding stage of parenting. As your baby zooms through the house like a force of nature, you move items upwards to keep them out of baby’s wake.

12. Repeat After Us
If snagging your baby inches from the curb for the millionth time or babyproofing have you ready to pull out your (now graying) hair, remember: It’s just a phase. Trust us, “It’s just a phase” will become your new favorite parenting mantra. Bonus: This useful phrase is surprisingly versatile! You’ll likely be using it for one thing or another for, oh, the next 18 years or so.

Amazon Review: I was looking for a gate that wouldn’t look like the gates we used for my childhood dog and something I could still maneuver without disrupting my daily routine. My pup is a 14 yr old toy rat terrier and the stairs have become a danger for her. I needed something that would block her from going up and down the stairs and hurting her fragile legs. I didn’t want to jump over or trip over a stair gate and this fit the need perfectly!! It’s easy to open the door (it took me 3 tries to PERFECT my technique) and has options for staying open. I also don’t need to close it fully which helps with my travels up and down the stairs. But it’s sturdy enough that she can’t open the gate if it’s touching and not sealed. —Tara M

Amazon Review: Purchased as baby gate to block our 14mo. old toddler from a 40"+ opening to our kitchen. Arrived on time, included extensions for wider openings, options for screw or tension mounting, metal/ wood esthetic is perfect for our contemporary style town home. Installation is easy, metal is heavy and sturdy. wood swinging door is lightweight, plastic accessory & mechanism for closure is not as secure compared to the safety 1st gate we also use. Tension has to be adjusted perfectly to operate smoothly & many attempts were made until successful. it feels over time it the plastic closure may fail, so it's almost perfect. the gate is essential for us now and even with those concerns we're satisfied with the product and have no regrets. —Mars

The Stair Barrier Banister Safety Gate

This one is great for travel, even if it's just from staircase to staircase. The fabric fits banister-to-banister, so it can be adjusted. Plus, fabric is super tricky for little feet to climb!

Amazon Reviews: Read a few reviews about it sagging. But I went ahead and purchased because the solid gates were not going to work. The cost was $$$ more than I wanted to pay, but I don’t regret it. This barrier adds in flexibility and provides the block needed to stop my 14 month old from climbing the stairs. The three straps work great with my stairs layout. The inserts keep the barrier upright and work great. Add in the fact you can roll it up when not needed is great. Also my Boston Terrier can spring over it to get upstairs as needed. (Trying to stop the baby not the dog). It works great! —Gwendo

There’s a reason why everyone says being a parent is the toughest job you’ll ever love. Because it’s true! But it doesn’t have to be. Lighten the load of your tough job with creative life hacks for moms and dads. You can thank us later.

Get the “Right” Foot Every Time

Allison Sutcliffe

Ah, sweet children. It’s a wonder their feet aren’t warped from shoes forever being put on the wrong foot. Help your little ones determine left from right with stickers. Cut one in half and place each half inside the soles of your kiddo’s shoes, so that when they’re paired correctly, the sticker looks whole. We love the simplicity of this visual aid.

Tie It Once

Pixabay

Getting shoes on the right feet is just the first hurdle. Getting kids to tie them quickly is the second. Sure, you could take the Velcro route, but you don’t need to if you replace your kid’s original sneaker laces with elastic ones. Here’s the best part: when you’ve got time to spare, kids can still practice their skills. But when you don’t, they can just slip them on. It’s almost too easy!

File It, Baby

Allison Sutcliffe

Between all the squirming and the fear of accidentally taking off the tip of your kid’s finger, using clippers to cut baby fingernails is pretty much madness. Take the pressure off by using a nail file instead. This hack lets you breathe easy.

Change Into Jammies after Swimming

Jason via flickr

Summer is still a little while away, but if you’ve got little swimmers in the fam, pool time is all the time. Changing out of swimwear can be difficult, which is why we suggest getting it over with right after your kids get out of the water. Keep an extra set of jammies in their swim bag or in the car so they can change ASAP after pool time is done.

Enjoy a Quiet Meal

saritarobinson via flickr

Sure, there will be a time where you’re desperate to get your tween to talk to you over a meal, but for now, peace and quiet during the breakfast rush is your goal. Turn on a family-friendly podcast over eggs and cereal to calm the chaos before school. We’ve got a few suggestions that are great for families, so everyone’s ears are happy.

Carabiner Hair Tie Holder

Jennie Rosenbaum via flickr

Every parent has experienced that constant search for hair ties. No matter how many packs you buy, eventually they’ll all be gone, and you’ll be back at the drugstore buying more. With this cool hack, you can save yourself headaches and money. All you need is a carabiner—open the clasp to store hair ties, and close it create the ultimate hair tie holder.

Sweep Your Kid's Room for Favors and Gifts

Jenn Durfey via flickr

With all of the awesome parties, fairs and fads for kids, yours have probably started to collect a gazillion random things. So, how do you keep your house clean with all of this stuff? We recommend doing a sweep of your little one's rooms when they're at school to get rid of the extra party favors, stray stickers and play dough clumps that are constantly multiplying in every corner of your house.

Frozen Sponge Ice Pack

The Best Hobbies Blog via Instructables

Packing lunch for your kids is usually part of the morning routine, and one of the most important items you need is an ice pack. Save money by skipping the blue plastic inserts, and use a frozen sponge to keep your youngsters’ lunches nice and frosty, instead. Put a wet sponge in a plastic bag and freeze: this technique will give you the perfect DIY ice pack.

Keep Cupholders Clean

Allison Sutcliffe

If you’ve ever wondered where lost Minifigs go, we’re pretty sure they’re all hiding inside your kid’s car seat base, refugees from closed cup holders of day’s past. Keep your Minifigs safe, and simplify cleaning car seat cup holders by using cupcake liners. They easily lift out when too many crumbs or leftover Cheerios fill them up, or forgotten toys need rescuing. It’s an easy clean solution.

Always Have Birthday Gifts

Erik Przekop via flickr

Birthday parties for kids are awesome! But, every parent has experienced the panic of being invited to the last minute birthday party or forgetting about a shindig your little ones are attending. We suggest ordering birthday gifts as soon as you RSVP or keeping a stash of gender-neutral gifts handy just in case!

Give Kids a Helping Hand

Pixabay

Your little ones want to get in on the game, but fanning cards can be so tough for little hands. The next time you sit down to family game night and your kids need a cardholder, use a modified egg carton to make one. Use an X-Acto knife to cut a slit in the top of each egg well on an upside down egg carton. The kids can slide in their cards lickety-split, and it’s time to play!

Barbie Organizer

A Girl and a Glue Gun

If you're looking for a creative way to organize your kiddos' dolls we've found an awesome hack just for you. Follow this unique tutorial from A Girl and a Glue Gun to create a Barbie organizer that's similar to an over-the-door shoe organizer, but it is customized to fit the height and width of each doll. It does require sewing skills, but you'll have an amazing storage system that's guaranteed to save you serious cleaning headaches.

Let Them Cut Cake

Pixabay

Your toddler is all about being independent and doing it himself. And you’re totally on board … unless he’s wielding your incredibly sharp knives. Keep little fingers safe and still build their confidence when you let kids use a pizza cutter to cut up quesadillas, grilled cheese, pancakes, whatever foods need to be cut “just right.” What a great way to practice life skills!

Hooks to Secure Your Fridge Door

ytdk

With a bunch of little tykes running around, safety is every parent's number one concern. One of our favorite life hacks for moms and dads is using a rubber bracelet and a pair of command hooks to secure your fridge door. Put one large command hook on the door and one on the body of the fridge. Then hook the bracelet around those two hooks, and you’ve got an awesome kiddie-proof fridge door that will keep everyone safe. Want other kitchen hacks? Click here

Key Ketchup Placement

Pixabay

When it comes to dressing up your kids' hot dogs, a mess is inevitable. Ketchup squirting out the back end while simultaneously ending up on their face. It’s like a horror show of a different variety. That’s why we love this ingenious hack—put the ketchup under the hot dog, not on top and definitely not on the side. With nowhere to go the ketchup stays put, and you’ve got less mess.

Keep a Donation Bag in Your Closet

Howard Lake via flickr

Cleaning out the closet is everyone’s spring cleaning nightmare. But, there’s a simple way to make the process a little smoother. One of our favorite life hacks is to keep a donation bag in the closet where you can put all of the items you’re planning to donate. It'll make it a lot easier to organize and separate when you’re ready to refresh your closet.

Chore Baskets

Margo via Joyful Homemaking

When your kids get a little older, having them help with chores around the house is important. This cool life hack for moms makes it easy for everyone to help out. From Joyful Homemaking, all you really need are plastic shower caddies, zip ties and a printer. The goal is to put all of the cleaning supplies each person needs in their basket and put a little list on the outside of it, so everyone knows which chores they need to complete.

Pick it up Quick

Allison Sutcliffe

If you cringe when your kid mentions glitter, we’re right there with you. But rather than feeling like you live in a fairy wonderland every time you craft with this seemingly impossible-to-cleanup substance, do what we do. Use a lint roller to get on top of it when craft time is over. We bet you’ll find less of the sparkly residue in your sink, on your floors and in crevices you didn’t even know existed after you use this simple hack.

Keep Birthday Cards on Hand

Open Grid Scheduler / Grid Engine Follow via flickr

We talked about gifts, but don’t forget about the cards. Birthday cards are sweet keepsakes for kids, and it’s always nice to include them with gifts. Since they’re so small, it’s easy to keep a selection of gender neutral cards on hand for those last minute invites.

Plastic Bins for Toy Storage

Mike Mozart via flickr

We know every household needs storage. With all of the toys, sports gear and dress-up costumes lying around the house, finding a place to put everything is a daily struggle. One of our favorite parent hacks is using dollar store plastic bins to store toys. These inexpensive containers are a life saver especially when it comes to storing tiny things like LEGO, doll clothes and toy cars. See our other favorite toy storage hacks by clicking here

Binder Clip as a Sponge Stand

Horia Varlan via flickr

One of the most popular places for bacteria to hang out in your kitchen is on your sponge. How does this happen? The biggest culprit is moisture. The sponge collects dirt and grime and stays sopping wet for a long time. One way to avoid the extra moisture all together is by putting a binder clip at the bottom of the sponge and using it as a makeshift stand. This allows the sponge dry out, so it stays free of bacteria.

Cookie Cutter Cabinet Locks

Kara Aycoth

If you're a new parent, and especially if you have toddlers running around, baby-proofing the house is a must. One of the most common items you need to secure is all of your cabinets, but there's no need to invest in expensive cabinet locks. Use this awesome hack from Kara Aycoth: Take cookie cutters and slide them over both handles to create fun and super cute locks.

Keep a Box for Kiddie Art

Gverds via flickr

If you have a creative child, you're always surrounded by kiddie art. But, what happens when there are drawings covering the walls, fridge and tables? We recommend keeping a box on hand to keep all of your favorite pieces.

Wine Rack for Craft Storage

Dean Wissing via flickr

We know you love your wine rack. But, with a few easy steps, you can transform it into a helpful craft corner for the kiddos. Take a few red plastic cups and place them at the same angle as a wine bottle inside the metal rungs. Use the cups to store everything from markers to glitter glue, tape and much more.

Frozen Balloons

Brit Co

If you're heading to the beach this summer, you're definitely going to want to use this awesome hack from Brit & Co. Instead of putting loose ice in your cooler, try freezing water balloons in there instead. They double as ice packs to keep food and drinks cold, and you can use them for a pretty amazing water balloon fight at the end of the day.

They say it takes a village to raise child—and one residential company wants to help you build that village and provide affordable housing for families at the same time.

According to Forbes, Kin, a residential brand which is a partnership between real estate developer Tishman Speyer and the co-living company Common, plans to build complexes designed to meet the needs of families with kids. These housing complexes will be equipped with amenities specific to parents, like stroller parking areas and community spaces made for kids.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvSUt8nnjWU/

The actual housing units will also be built with families in mind. Baby-proofing, for example, will already be completed on move-in ready spaces. Other amenities will include family-friendly kitchens and regular cleaning services.

The thing that really sets Kin developments apart, however, is the concept of creating community among neighbors. Every resident will have access to an app which will notify them about community events in their buildings, like kids story times or birthday parties. The app will also partner with third party providers to feature childcare services on demand.

“Kin is designed to harness the power of the sharing economy to produce stronger communities, and more cost-effective and convenient childcare options,” explained Rob Speyer, dad and co-founder and CEO at Tishman Speyer.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvMMnQankk5/

While rent in these units is definitely market rate or higher depending on where you live, the company claims that the savings in childcare that parents will get through co-opted nannies will end up making the cost of living in the developments much less. Announcements on where Kin developments will roll out in cities across the United States is expected later this year. In the meanwhile the app will become available to residents in Tishman Speyer’s new 1,800-unit rental development in Long Island City, Queens, starting in May.
