The Season of Family Reunions has a nice ring to it! A new study from Travelocity showed most people who stayed home during the pandemic miss socializing with family above all and 69 percent of non-parent respondents plan to travel for leisure within the next nine months, compared to 80 percent among parent respondents

From April 20-24, Travelocity surveyed more than 1,000 participants who live in the U.S. to gain better insight on summer travel plans. As restrictions begin to loosen nationwide, respondents are overall eager to travel and 67 percent note that being vaccinated personally plays a key role in their decision. Forty-two percent of non-travelers said that the main barrier up to this point is that it did not feel safe.

Among parents, 71 percent said they’d travel whether or not their children had received the COVID-19 vaccine. They’re also quite in touch with changes in the travel industry, with 66 percent noting that they’re extremely or very familiar with safety developments. What will travel look like this summer? Respondents with upcoming vacations planned said they’ll visit family (24 percent), hit the beach (16 percent), take a road trip (13 percent) or travel internationally (9 percent). Almost two thirds will get there by car (60 percent) and the rest plan to fly (35 percent). To help make getaway dreams come true, Travelocity is partnering with Thrifty Car Rental to give away two deluxe road trips, valued at $25,000 each. Even if you don’t win, you’ll be in good company if you’ve booked upcoming travel. We foresee lots of hugs in near future!

A new portal to a world of fun and adventure just opened in Tukwila. It’s called Reality’s Edge. Everything about this virtual reality experience is mysterious. Most people will walk by and not even notice that the portal is there. But it’s there all right—and just wait till you see what’s inside!

Dad Dreams

Boy with VR equipment

Reality’s Edge can be found at the Seattle Exchange compound in unit #671 under the business name Ong Innovations. The unassuming and stark office area serves as just a front for the wonders that lie beyond the back door. You see, once you go past that back door and enter the large white room, you’ll be leaving the world as you know it. Or at least when you put on your special virtual reality goggles you will.

While the concept of virtual reality isn’t exactly new, two Seattle dads, Sean Ong and Joshua Phillips, are on a mission to create the next level of entertainment that is both family-friendly and affordable. And frankly, during these COVID times, it is a great, safe place to bring the kids.

A Different Dimension

Boy with VR equipment

“Reality's Edge is a fun place for friends and family to experience virtual reality together,” says Sean. “We aim to lower the barriers to virtual experiences and bring family fun and forward-thinking education experiences to the masses.” Sean and Joshua have big plans for Reality’s Edge, but right now they are starting out small with virtual laser tag sessions for group sizes of two to five players. We got a chance to check it out, and it’s a win in our book. It’s laser tag as you know it, but in a different dimension.

Create Your Reality

Girl with VR equipment

Once the cordless goggles get put on, you’ll find yourself in a different landscape. It may be out in space or in a lush jungle. Turn around slightly and you might be surprised that you’re not alone. Five creatures, both human and inhuman, stand at the ready for a chance to serve as your avatar. This is how the other players will see you. From there, you play the game just as you would a physical game. You shoot lasers at the other players. If you get shot, you’ll retreat to the specially marked areas to recharge and then you go at it again. Special bonus features hang within reach, making you a force to be reckoned with.

Playing it Safe

Boys with VR equipment

As a parent, you may be wondering how is all of this safe? This is part of the experience that we really like. All of the equipment is cleaned and is sanitized after every session. During the games, each player has sort of a six-foot bubble around them while they play. If a player gets too close to another player, a warning flashes helping everyone to maintain safe social distancing practices.

During the games, players have to navigate around different virtual obstacles, but the physical walls of the room are very real. Run into one of them and you’ll be in a lot of hurt. Fortunately, the game puts up a barrier about two feet away from the actual walls to keep players from bumping their heads. Adults and older kids will pick up the technology right away, but even little ones (about five years old or so) will be able to understand how to play rather quickly. And being dads themselves, both Sean and Joshua know how to speak “kid” which is helpful getting young ones comfortable with this new experience.

The Next Chapter

This is just the beginning for Reality’s Edge. The owners hope to expand to offer other experiences like Winter Wonderland and a Virtual Science Museum (We got a preview of this and it will be really cool!). For now though, the place is open by appointment Monday-Saturday. Each half-hour session is $35 for up to five people during the week and $60 on Saturdays.

Want to do something totally different for a birthday or special event? They offer that too. Party packages are just $250 for 90 minutes, including an hour of VR time and 30 minutes for cake and refreshments. In fact, these guys are super flexible, so if you've got an idea, they will work with you.

Hours: Mon.-Sat., by appointment
Cost: $35/session, Mon.-Fri.; $60/session, Sat.
Ages: 5 & up

little boy in a field

I wish the r-word would just disappear. Poof! Be gone. Permanently erased forever.

The r-word is a euphemism for “retard” or “retarded.” It is a derogatory and insulting term used to describe or insult individuals with intellectual disabilities. I’m so tired of hearing it and reading it on social media used to insult a person, place, or thing through comparison to a person with an intellectual disability. There is no correct way to use the r-word. None. It needs to go!

If you haven’t already, please kick the r-word to the curb, once and for all. I’m so tired of reading the expression “that’s so retarded.” People need to stop using it as a descriptor. It’s not a joke. The r-word has such a negative stigma attached to it.

In a world of social media and a pandemic, more and more people are going online including those with intellectual disabilities. They have a right to be in the online space free from disrespect and online bullying. I have seen friends use this word. It’s like a stab to my heart. They know the struggles that I have with my child, how hard he works, and the obstacles he faces and seeing them just throw that word around, out into the world- like nothing. It is beyond disheartening.

It is really one of the worst things that they can say. I wish that people thought before they spoke. I wish they realized how hurtful and demeaning the “r-word” is. I wish they could live in our world for a day so they could realize the love, kindness, strength, fight, heart, friendship, and perseverance of those living with intellectual disabilities. They are missing out.

This is more than a word, it’s about respect and attitudes. It’s about people looking down on others and judging them because of perceived capabilities. Never make an assumption about what another person can and cannot do. My son is an amazing little boy. He loves life and other people. He likes muffins, telling jokes, YouTube, and Buzz Lightyear. He loves hugs, stickers, swimming, and being included.

He is love, kindness, acceptance, purity, positivity, strength, and courage. He is smart. He is capable. He has encountered more obstacles, jumped more hurdles, and climbed bigger mountains in his mere five years than some people encounter in a lifetime. He is more than any assumption, barrier, limit, or diagnosis. He is and will always be more than the ignorance, negativity, hate, opinions, and preconceived notions of others. He will always be more than the r-word.

Watch out world, Barbie is vlogging and she has a lot to say. Through short videos on YouTube, she is giving fans a look inside her world and she tries to educate them along the way. In her latest episode, Barbie invites her friend Nikki to have a discussion on racism.

Barbie is using her platform to raise awareness around racism and encourage girls to stand up if they see a person treated unfairly. The format of the episode consists of Barbie’s friend Nikki talking about the racism she has personally felt and share some stories that may resonate with other girls.

The goal of the episode is to help girls to understand that there is a huge movement going on in the fight against racism, why people are marching together and the importance of reading and learning more about Black history. Barbie is championing gender equality to help close the racial injustice barrier girls face through the Dream Gap and this is one way the brand is addressing it.

Barbie shares, “It’s important to have ongoing conversations about standing up to racism, so I invited my good friend Nikki to join the vlog to share her experiences about when she has been treated unfairly. I am grateful for her honesty and friendship. To be a good friend, it’s important to listen, to understand, and to notice when bad things are happening to other people and to do something to help stop it. I hope that after hearing from Nikki, you too, will be inspired to continue taking a stand against racism.

Is the sun out today? Then you’ve got the power you need to make an eco-friendly oven just for melting marshmallows and chocolate! Ooey-gooey and super easy, this s’mores science project is also a great, yummy introduction to the power of solar energy. Read on for this delicious science experiment your kids will love.

Note – cooking time depends on the temperature outdoors.

You Will Need:
A pizza box
Aluminum foil
Clear page protectors (or plastic wrap)
Clear tape
Black construction paper
Graham Crackers
Marshmallows
Chocolate

Method:
1. Cut a flip in the lid of the pizza box, leaving about an inch border around the edge.

2. Cover the lid with aluminum foil (with the shiny part facing you). Line the bottom of the box with foil as well.

3. Glue the black construction paper over the foil on the bottom.

4. Inside the lid, use clear tape to seal the page protectors or plastic wrap over the opening. This will create a barrier so that the hot air can’t escape, creating a “greenhouse” effect and heating your make-shift oven.

5. Take your oven outside, and set up your graham crackers. Place a piece of chocolate on one side and a marshmallow on the other. Don’t stack!

6. Angle the foil flap to reflect directly into the box. Then wait for the melting to begin!

7. Once the chocolate has melted and the marshmallows look soft, bring the two pieces together and eat!

How the make-shift oven works: The reflective aluminum foil captures sunlight and projects it onto the black construction paper, which retains the heat. As the heat collects, it warms up the air inside the box, creating a nice hot box (aka the “greenhouse effect”) in the sealed oven. Results? A sweet treat for your scientist!

Have you tried this project before? Let us know your results!

Simple Static Electricity Science Experiment That’ll Impress Your Kids

Best Solar Science Experiments for Kids

From a newborn with impossibly sticky poop to a toddler who won’t stay still for more than a few seconds, diaper changing challenges never stop. A single baby will literally need thousands of diaper changes in just the first year. We’ve got you, and your baby’s bottom, covered with 10 diaper hacks to make all those changes just a little bit easier.

photo: Sellers Patton via Flickr

1. Creating a Barrier
A newborn’s first bowel movements are black and tar-like. It’s called meconium and it’s a sticky mess. Right from the very fist diaper change, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to baby’s bottom to create a barrier on the skin. For any that does get stuck on, olive oil on a clean cloth will gently clean it off.

2. Keeping Track
In those early months, you’ll want to know how often baby goes to the bathroom to make sure they are getting enough nutrients. Your pediatrician is probably also going to ask how many diapers baby goes through in a day, so you’re going to want to keep track. Instead of relying on your sleep-deprived brain, try an app like Sleep Tracker, in which you can also record feedings, sleep patterns, and milestones.

Available on iTunes and Google Play, free.

3. Sizing Up
Blowouts up the back of the diaper are going to happen. If they start to become a regular occurrence, go up a diaper size. The height and weight guidelines for diapers are merely suggestions, so don’t worry that the diaper will be too big. What you want to check is that the leg openings aren’t loose, otherwise you might get leakage there.

4. Tricks for Receiving Blanket
Chances are you received at least one package of receiving blankets in preparation for your little bundle’s arrival, and chances are you have no idea what to do with all those small, thin blankets. Laying one on top of the changing pad cover makes for a quick clean-up when things get messy. That way you don’t have to worry about constantly washing the changing-pad cover. Also, stash one in the diaper bag for on-the-go changes in your car or public changing stations.

5. Emergency Diapers
Speaking of diaper bags, there will come a time when you run out of the house and completely forget to grab yours. Or you look into the bag and realize you forgot to restock diapers! To avert disaster, keep a diaper or two and a travel-size pack of wipes in your glove compartment for such an occasion. Check your stash occasionally to make sure it’s still baby’s current diaper size.

6. Diaper Cream Brush
Another thing that’s bound to happen when it comes to baby bums is diaper rash. There are many creams and lotions on the market to clear up rashy bottoms, and one thing almost all of them have in common is that they are very hard to clean off your hands and always seem to get under your fingernails. One accessory that’s worth looking into is the Baby Bumco Diaper Cream Brush for all your application needs.

Available at bumco.com, $9.99.

7. Avoid the Spray
It has probably happened to every parent. You get baby all cleaned up and are grabbing a fresh diaper only to get wet before getting the new diaper on. A good tip for post-nap changes is to wait a few minutes for your little one to wake up. As they get older, babies and toddlers are less likely to pee in their sleep, so you want to give them time to get it all out before you expose them to the air. You can also place a fresh diaper over top of boys while you slip the old one off and double up underneath for girls while you change them.

8. Clothing Hacks
Baby clothes have built-in features to help avoid diaper woes. Those shoulder folds on many onesies and some shirts are not only there to help get the tops over baby’s head. You can also use them to take clothes off by pulling them down instead of up, which keeps baby’s face and hair clean in the case of a blowout. For curious toddlers who like to play with zippers and snaps, put them in their pajamas backwards to keep little hands out of messy diapers.

9. Make It Fun
Diaper changes can be stressful for parents and babies alike. For younger babies, sing a song or recite a nursery rhyme to keep them calm. For fidgety toddlers, set aside a few easily washable toys that are reserved for diaper time only to keep their minds distracted and their hands busy. Your little ones may actually come to look forward to changing time!

10. Overnight Diapers
For heavy night wetters, look for diapers specifically labeled for nighttime. They are more absorbent than regular ones, so it’s less likely that your little one will wake up in the middle of night soaked. You can also slip a Sposie Booster Pad into any type of diaper for extra absorbency.

Available at sposie.com, $11.99-$12.99.

Be Sun Smart With Baby: 10 Summer Safety Tips to Follow

Ah, the beach. Nothing says vacation like a wide expanse of soft sand and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. But with kiddos in tow, sometimes it’s better to have a back-up for those days when doing nothing just won’t do. With miles of marshes and barrier islands to explore in addition to the beach, history around every corner, bike trails, ecotours and more, there’s no better place than Wild Dunes Resort on the coast of South Carolina for your next beach trip base camp. Pssst—It’s less than a 5 hour drive from Atlanta! Keep reading for everything you need to know about this magnificent seaside spot for making memories.

Where to Stay

S. Massey

Wild Dunes Resort rolls over 1,600 acres on the northern end of Isle of Palms, a barrier island with both flat, sandy beaches and easily-accessible marshland to explore. For a shorter stay with full-service concierge hotel accommodations, the Boardwalk Inn at Wild Dunes Resort is a stylish yet comfortable spot with spacious rooms and suites. For apartment-style accommodations with guest rooms and suites (choose from one-, two- and three-bedroom suites and penthouses, all of which are fully furnished and tastefully decorated) designed with family travel in mind, the Village at Wild Dunes Resort is an easy hop, skip, and jump from the Grand Pavilion, pools, and beach access. And if you prefer a beach house, Wild Dunes Resort has plenty. Stay tuned for exciting events surrounding the Grand Opening in early 2021 of a brand new hotel that will have bonus experiential stays (think author weekends and regionally-inspired activities).

Why we love it: Vacation gets a little less shiny when mom has to hit the grocery store, then plan, cook, and clean-up after meals. Wild Dunes Resort offers guests the option to use Red Apron Dinner Delivery—order 48 hours in advance to have ingredients and recipe cards delivered to your doorstep. Ditch the trip to the grocery store altogether and whip up your own restaurant-quality dinners in the comfort of your own home.

The Beach

Wild Dunes Resort

While there are many beach access points throughout Wild Dunes Resort, you’ll find two beach-front pools, the Beachside Burgers & Bar, and chair and umbrella service at the Grand Pavillion. And, as long-time citizens on the island, Wild Dunes Resort is committed to sustainable practices that benefit the natural beauty and unique character of the region. You’ll find that straws are paper (and on-demand), turtle season means an integrated guest education effort (and an exciting partnership with the South Carolina Aquarium), and Hudson's Market—located in the Village at Wild Dunes Resort—is full of seasonally inspired local products.

Good to know: A day at the beach can be carefree at Wild Dunes Resort, with The Surf Shop only steps from the Grand Pavillion (no running across the island to pick up the sunscreen you forgot to throw in your beach bag), plus Duney’s ice cream store that makes convincing the kiddos to leave the beach or pools just a little bit easier.

The Bay

S. Massey

Part of what makes Isle of Palms so unique is that half of it fronts a tidal plain, made up of marshes and a navigable Intracoastal Waterway. If you’d like to spend time on the water and you'd like to explore the unique landscape of the low country, head to the Isle of Palms Marina (about 4 minutes from Wild Dunes Resort, and accessible via the resort shuttle). You’ll find plenty of chartered boat options, but our favorite experience was with a naturalist-led adventure with Barrier Island Eco Tours. You'll experience the barrier islands surrounding Isle of Palms from a different perspective by boat, and you'll pick up tons of information about the unique ecosystem of the marshes, along the way.

Don’t miss: A trip with Captain Stingray of Barrier Island Ecotours includes pulling up crab cages from the marsh to see what might be inside (before releasing them back into the wild), dolphin and loggerhead turtle watching at a spot known as the Shark Hole, and just under two hours of independent exploration on Capers Island, an entirely undeveloped island just teeming with crabs, where you can look for shards of Native American pottery among the shells at Boneyard Beach. Other excursions that can be booked include private family charters, beachside cookouts on a barrier island, and blue crabbing excursions.

Where to Eat

S. Massey

Whether you’re staying at the Boardwalk Inn, the Village, or in a private beach home, you can easily hop on your bikes to arrive at one of the resort’s many dining options. From Billy G’s island Smokehouse that serves up a dose of Goat Island history with its ribs and sandwiches, to Coastal Provisions—the resort’s fine dining experience inside the Boardwalk Inn—you’ll find locally sourced meals, regionally inspired dishes, and a relaxed vibe.

Don’t leave unless you try: At Hudson's Market in the Village at Wild Dunes Resort, the brave at heart (and stomach) have to take a go at the Wild Thing Challenge—a 16 scoop concoction of delicious ice cream that earns its conqueror a t-shirt proclaiming his or her feat.

Nearby Spots to Explore

S. Massey

One of the best reasons to plan your next beach trip to Wild Dunes Resort is its proximity to other areas worth exploring. To truly understand the unique ecosystem of the South Carolina barrier islands, take a trip on the water—kayak tours as well as boat excursions are available—with Barrier Island Eco Tours. You can head to Boneyard Beach on Capers Island to check out the unique formations of sun-bleached (but dead) live oaks dotting the coast. Or, head across the indescribably beautiful Cooper River Bridge to check out Charleston’s incredible history, remarkable homes, and exciting dining options, just about 25 minutes away.

Live like a local: For an unique low country experience, head to Awendaw Green for weekly original music showcases under grand oaks on the grounds of the Sewee Outpost. The Barn Jams happen every Wednesday night of the year and feature a diverse assembly of music from around the globe. Try a wood fired pizza, the grill, or fresh local oysters in season and drink your own libations responsibly for a $5 donation at the door. All ages are welcome, BYOB, keep your pets on a leash, and enjoy the lowcountry vibe at this family-friendly occasion.

When to Go

S. Massey

It’s always a good time to visit Wild Dunes Resort. Families can take advantage of the assortment of activities on property, including family evening Bingo, outdoor movies, educational clinics and more, throughout the year. From approximately June 1st to August 5th, the Dune Bug Club organizes age-specific activities and projects for kids to do—think fort building, astronaut camp, and junior detective whodunnits—while mom and dad play a round of golf, hit the tennis courts, or maybe just take a nap.

Keep in mind: You can count on temperate weather from Easter to Thanksgiving, which makes visiting during a holiday even more appealing. The 4th of July is epic, with live music, a cookout on Village Plaza, games by the pool, craft tents, and other exciting events. At Thanksgiving, be on the lookout for the annual golf cart parade, and enjoy dinner delivered to your residence or head to one of the full-service traditional spreads at the resort. Christmas and Easter are also both punctuated by traditional activities interpreted for your stay at the beach.

Hot dates: Wild Dunes Resort’s “Hot Dates” in May and June for $149 a night can't be beat, and are perfect for a last minute beach trip. Just throw your bathing suits in a bag and head to Isle of Palms; Wild Dunes Resort will take care of the rest. For more details, take a peek here.

A special thanks to Wild Dunes Resort for hosting the trip. All opinions here are the author’s own.
