These all-inclusive resorts have amazing kids club programs that are included with your stay

Thinking of heading to the Dominican Republic with your family? You definitely should! It’s a quick flight from the East Coast and offers some of the most gorgeous beaches, welcoming people, and delicious food in the Caribbean. Club Med is an easy choice for families as it is truly all-inclusive. You can have them book everything from your flights to your airport transfers and excursions so you don’t even have to think about anything beyond packing your suitcase.

Club Med offers two properties in the Dominican Republic: Club Med Punta Cana and Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda. Which of these all-inclusive properties is best for families? We have the full scoop on both and a tip on how you can even enjoy both on the same vacation!

Club Med Punta Cana

Club Med

Club Med Punta Cana is the brand’s flagship family property and you can see the focus on kids before you even arrive. Once your reservation is booked and paid in full, you can sign your kids up for the Mini Club program that offers a full-day kids club experience. Activities like crafts, tennis, archery, circus school, and so much more are included for ages 4 and up at Club Med. For kids under age 4, on-demand care is available for an additional fee. You can even get care for your kids during dinner hours so they can head off with their friends while you enjoy a quiet meal with your partner.

The property’s Mini Club facilities were quite impressive. There’s a zero-entry splash zone for cooling off when the temps creep up. Rooms for dining and activities along with playground equipment are also available. While we were on the property, we saw tons of kids participating in everything from water games to a pirate scavenger hunt!

Accommodations at Club Med Punta Cana

Club Med Punta Cana for families

We stayed in the two-bedroom family room while at Club Med Punta Cana and it was very well-appointed for families of up to five people. There’s a parent room with a king-size bed and bathroom, along with a couch that can be arranged as a bed for a child if needed. A separate bedroom with two twin beds for the kids has plenty of storage area and a door that closes. There’s also a second bathroom in the hallway and a balcony. The family rooms are conveniently located in the middle of the property with easy access to Mini Club and the main restaurant, Hispaniola.

Club Med

If you have a baby coming along with you, the Club Med Baby Welcome Kit can be reserved in advance without additional cost and it comes with a baby bathtub, bottle warmer, changing table, umbrella bed, and stroller (this is also available at Michès).

In addition to the family accommodations, you can upgrade your stay to the Exclusive Collection space where you’ll have even more room to spread out. This part of the resort offers room service for breakfast, as well as a private pool and bar.

Head to the Zen Oasis when the kids are at Mini Club for some time in the adults-only pool. Accommodations are also available in this more secluded area of the property if you are traveling without little ones.

Dining at Club Med Punta Cana

Club Med

Club Med Punta Cana has three restaurants available as part of the all-inclusive package. Hispaniola is your go-to spot for buffet dining which kids really love. Breakfast is our favorite with the omelette station taking top marks, but the dinner buffet with the chocolate fountain is a kid favorite. Hispaniola offers a gorgeous oceanfront view, was recently renovationed, and is open for all three meals.

Club Med Punta Cana for families

For a la carte service with ocean views, Indigo is your spot. We especially enjoyed our dinner at Indigo with perfectly grilled meats and delicious sides. The Dominican offerings like the curry plate were also quite tasty. Samana Restaurant was closed for yearly maintenance during our stay but it offers a variety of cuisines including Caribbean, French, Italian, Asian, and more.

Things to Do at Club Med Punta Cana

Club Med Punta Cana for families

If you want a full day of activities, Club Med Punta Cana is ready to provide. The Club Med app will lay out all the activities available for the day from organized beach volleyball games to power walking. There are different nightly performances and the Michael Jackson show was particularly fun.

Before you arrive, check out the themes for the nights you’ll be there. This ranges from white night to black/gold or floral. We were surprised how much the guests got into this while we were there! It’s not mandatory of course but most people would dress up in that night’s theme before they headed to dinner. It brings a festive vibe to the dining and nightly activities.

Club Med Punta Cana for families

During the day, you can head to the beach for some time on the lounge chairs or watersports like snorkeling and sailing. Gear is available to check out but if your kids have their own goggles or floaties they like, you might want to bring them with you. We did find that the lobby shops were quite well stocked with anything we might have forgotten to bring with us.

Club Med Punta Cana for families

Adults should definitely plan to spend some time at the onsite spa while you are there. Services like massages and facials are available for an additional cost but we think it’s definitely worth it for access to the gorgeous indoor/outdoor spa space. You can even book a couple’s massage with a view of the ocean.

Getting to Club Med Punta Cana

If you are looking for convenience, this is the spot for you. Fly into Punta Cana International Airport and then grab your shuttle to the resort. The property is located just a 20-minute drive from the airport so you don’t have a long van ride after your flight. Couldn’t be easier!

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is an oasis in the Dominican jungle and you’re going to want to check it out. A 1.5-hour shuttle ride will get you from the airport to this Exclusive Collection property and you’ll be impressed by your gorgeous surroundings from the minute you walk through the open-air lobby and are treated to a refreshing drink.

At Michès, you’ll find the service to be elevated from access to a pre-arrival concierge to the superior room amenities. All rooms have access to breakfast room services which is very convenient when traveling with kids.

Club Med Michès is focused on sustainability and they even have a water bottling facility on-site, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles. You will find glass bottles available in your room and they replace them as you use them throughout your stay. You can also find bottle-filling stations around the property.

Accommodations at Club Med Michès

Club Med

Four villages make up the accommodations and you’ll find a different vibe in each. Explorer Cove is where we stayed and it had good access to the main area of the resort with pool, as well as the Mini Club and beach. Families will enjoy the Deluxe Family Room which has an adult room with a bathroom, a separate room with two twin beds for the kids, plus a second bathroom. Limited snacks and beverages are available in the in-room fridge and you’ll have a Nespresso machine as well.

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families

Other areas of the property include Caribbean Paradise (a colorful area for families and couples), Zen Oasis (a relaxing area for everyone), and Archipelago (an adult-exclusive area with suites). No matter where you stay, adults have access to the Zen Pool (pictured above). Believe us when we say that you won’t want to leave this area once you’ve seen it! This gorgeous green pool has lots of spots for sunbathing or reading in the shade, as well as a swim-up bar where you can get fresh-made smoothies or cocktails as you like. Claim one of the hammocks and you’ll be in heaven.

Mini Club at Club Med Michès

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families
Club Med

Just like at the Punta Cana property, kids ages 4 and up have access to the Mini Club program at Michès with similar offerings like circus school, water play, crafts, theater, and more. Infants from 4 months and up can have booked care for an additional price. The splash pad in the Mini Club area is available to families even if you aren’t using Mini Club that day. The dump bucket was a huge hit as you can imagine!

Dining at Club Med Michès

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families
Club Med

The gourmet food offerings at Michès really shine and you can see that from the moment you wake up. Head over to the coffee shop where you can find hot and cold coffee drinks, frozen yogurt, pastries, and small sandwiches.

The buffet at Cayuco had pretty much everything you could want from fresh fruit to Asian bowls to fresh-made pancakes. Adults dining without their kids can enjoy their meals in the adults-only area if they wish. Don’t miss Club Med’s signature white chocolate bread while you are there! Be sure you check the schedule for nights when they offer the Secret Chocolate Room experience. The kids will go wild when they learn that they can have as much chocolate as they can fit on their plates.

Coco Plum focuses on local specialties with many different seafood options as well as non-meat options. Try the fish tacos while you enjoy the waves crashing nearby.

Coal & Copper is the resort’s steakhouse that welcomes guests for an additional fee. We had an amazing meal here and the staff was very attentive. The portions are massive so make sure you are hungry when you arrive!

Things to Do at Club Med Michès

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families

Take advantage of all the activities offered at Club Med Michès as there really is something for everyone. The treetop palapa is a lovely venue for morning yoga before you head to the nearby Zen Pool. Tennis lessons, fitness classes, watersports, circus lessons, and so much more are on the agenda. The tough part—balancing the relaxing with all the activities.

Club Med Michès has an excellent spa that we got to visit during our stay. Enjoy your time before or after your treatment trying out the three plunge pools that go from refreshingly cold to hot. Any way you like to relax is available here.

Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda for families

Nighttime brings all sorts of performances like traditional Dominican dancers and circus acts. Be sure to check the Club Med app for the schedule for the day so you know what to expect.

Things to Know about Visiting Club Med in the Dominican Republic

  • You can arrange a day trip to Club Med Punta Cana from Michès if you want to check out the other property. Some people even split their visit between the two properties if they want a little variety.
  • The mosquitos come out at dusk in Michès. The resort provides bug spray and sprays the property as well but keep that in mind if you are sensitive.
  • Mini Club can book up so if you are sure you want to use it during your stay, book it as soon as you arrive at the resort or in advance if possible.
  • Many families bring strollers or foldable wagons with them. Floaties for the swimming pool are also allowed (and sold at the gift shop at both locations).

Club Med does a great job welcoming families, setting space aside for parents to relax without their kids, and bringing visitors together for shows and parties. It really is quite the fun all-inclusive family vacation!

Editor’s note: This trip was hosted by Club Med but all the opinions belong to the writer.

Bonus: They all include Kids’ Club programs

You might hear “all-inclusive” and envision crowded buffets and packed pools, but the truth is, all-inclusive resorts can be kind of perfect for families. Not only is there a smorgasbord of activities to choose from (usually gated off from the outside world, so relatively safe for older kids to explore independently)—but you won’t be hit with an exorbitant bill that’ll zap always all those breezy vacay vibes as fast as you can say, “Check, please.”

What’s even better? There are all-inclusive resorts where your kids can stay free, meaning you get a whole crew’s-worth of perks for the price of two parents (single parents can usually get one child free).

So whether you want to bask on the beach in Mexico, ride a horse in Colorado, or binge at the buffet in Aruba, the world is waiting. Here are our favorite all-inclusive resorts where your kids can stay free.

Note: Unless otherwise mentioned, the “Kids Stay Free” programs usually include up to 2 children per 2 adults.

And, unlike most resorts, it also includes flights, so you can see that price tag and rest assured you won’t go over budget.

There’s no better place to spend the summer than at a Seattle splash zone—from parks with water play and splash pads to family-friendly beaches

Looking for a family-friendly summer staple in Seattle? Just find a spot to splash! On a hot summer day, when kids want to play in the water, these city spots are perfect for afternoons out or quick, post-playground cool-off sessions. There’s truly no better place to splash and play than at a Seattle spray park, splash pad, wading pool, or beach. Here’s what you need to know about Seattle’s free water play areas, including what’s open and when, so you can plan your best summer ever.

Seattle Sprayparks & Splash Pads

With longer hours than wading pools and the perk of being open rain or shine (sprayparks only close in the case of thunder and lightning), sprayparks are a summer must. This year, Seattle sprayparks are open through Labor Day (read on for details). Bring the kids any time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. to get their splash on. You can find a map and updates on Seattle’s spraypark and wading pools online.

Insider Tip: Some spayparks are activated by a push button.

International Fountain at Seattle Center
Perhaps the most well known, and certainly the largest fountain in Seattle, the International Fountain in the heart of Seattle Center is an undeniable showstopper. Built in 1961 for the World’s Fair, the fountain has choreographed musical numbers and new LED lighting with jumping jets of water that surprise even the most nimble of water lovers. Maybe this will be the summer when your kiddos (and you?) finally touch the silver dome in the center of the fountain without getting a face-full of water? For a quieter fountain experience nearby, also try out the Fountain of Creation just northeast of the International Fountain in Seattle Center or the Center Steps Plaza splash pad.

Tukwila Spray Park
Located just a few miles outside of the city at the Tukwila Community Center, the Tukwila Spray Park is a popular place for many West Seattle and South Seattle families. Little ones will love the water dome and gentle sprayers and big kids will love the water cannons and bucket that dumps water on splashers below. The park has plenty of grassy space to throw down a blanket and enjoy a picnic and the nearby playground is an added perk.

Beacon Mountain in Jefferson Park
If you need a park with a view and plenty of other things to do, hit up the splash park at Jefferson Park. This jewel of Beacon Hill is perfect for smaller tots and has lots of space for parents to soak up some rays and catch vistas of downtown and the Olympic Mountains. Plus, there's two zippy tube slides next to the spray park for even added fun.

Highland Park Playground
After closing its wading pool in 2008, this little gem in West Seattle reopened in 2013 with a new and vastly improved spray park in lieu of its old wading pool and received another face lift in 2017. If your kids stop hopping through the water spouts long enough, and can keep clear of the big bucket water dumps, they might want to take a break at the new and improved playground before heading home.

South Lake Union Park
Right on the water in the heart of South Lake Union is a downtown splash pad that is the perfect refresher after a stroll around SLU or lunch at one of the many new restaurants in this revitalized part of town. You can also cruise the nearby Museum of History and Industry, rent a free Peapod boat (Wednesdays through Sundays, year-round) at The Center for Wooden Boats or board the Queen Anne Revenge pirate ship parked at the dock next to MOHAI. Or, just splash around, enjoy the fountains, the views of the Space Needle and the sea planes flying over head.

Georgetown Playfield
As one of Seattle's newer splash pads, this is an oasis of fun in the middle of South Seattle. The fountain-filled water area is located near the intriguing airplane-themed playground at the north end of the park, so if your kids get tired of splashing, they can always hit the swings for a change of pace.

750 S. Homer St.

Northacres Park
If you’re looking for a full day of summer fun, try out the North Acres Park between I-5 and Haller Lake. The playground was fully renovated in 2012 and the wooded area has gentle walking paths (perhaps the perfect spot for a game of water balloon tag?). And if Fido needs some exercise as well, bring him along; there’s an off-leash dog park. The spray park is a labyrinth, which adds new meaning to getting lost in the lazy days of summer.

Yesler Terrace Park
Another splash pad option that offers an outstanding playground is Yesler Terrace Park. Recently renovated, families will find fantastic views alongside plenty of play spots here. It's pretty much a spend the day kind of place when the sun is out.

917 Yesler Way

Even More Sprayparks: You can also take the kids to splash and play at Judkins Park, Miller Community Center, John C. Little Park, Pratt Playground Sparypark and Ballard Commons in 2023.

Seattle Wading Pools

Once the mercury hits 70 degrees, the floodgates open and the city’s wading pools are filled. If you want to see your kids wallow around like lazy hippos (or more likely … hyperactive hippos), check out our favorite wading pools around the Emerald City.

Insider Tip: Seattle wading pools will stay open until anywhere between mid-August 16 and Labor Day, depending on the location, with various hours when the conditions are right (no rain in the forecast and a prediction of 70 degree temps or higher). If the weather is questionable, call the Wading Pool Hotline (206-684-7796). It’s updated at 9:30 a.m. daily with open and closure information. You can also check the city’s wading pool Facebook page. To find the wading pool closest to you, check the Seattle Parks and Recreation website.

Green Lake Park Wading Pool
Located on the north side of Green Lake, this is the largest of Seattle’s "Big Three" wading pools, and probably the most popular. Cool your heels here after a spin around the lake and you’ll be an instant part of the very large fan club for this summer time hot spot. Psst! Lincoln Park Wading Pool
Although it’s the smallest of the “Big Three” wading pools, the prime location of Lincoln Park along the lovely beaches of West Seattle make it a one of the most beautiful spots around for a quick dip. If you’re looking for a late afternoon or evening wade, this is your wading pool, as it catches lots of late afternoon sunshine. And if you need total immersion, Colman Pool is right down the hill. Note: the wading pool is located next to the north play area.

Magnuson Park Wading Pool
Technically not one of the “Big Three” wading pools, it is one of the wading pools that will be open daily throughout the summer. Magnuson is in the second largest park in Seattle and therefore boasts tons of other stuff to do (beaches, playground, butterfly garden, off-leash dog park) in addition to having a super-sweet wading pool.

Volunteer Park Wading Pool
This historic grassy park in Capital Hill is a bastion of green space in the city. In fact, if it weren’t for the amazing views of downtown and the Space Needle, this pastoral spot might have you forgetting you were in the city at all. Bring a picnic and plan on staying a while, even after you’ve had your fill with splashing through the nice big wading pool. And yes, this wading pool is one of the city's "Big Three."

Bitter Lake Wading Pool
Located on the north end of the city, this wading pool doesn't disappoint, and neither do the park amenities that come along with it. In addition to a spot for kids to play hippo or Jaws, you'll find a playground and lighted tennis courts (sounds like a great after swim activity to us!) all right next to the large community center. Picnic, swim and play is the trifecta play at Bitter Lake.

Wallingford Playfield Wading Pool
Super centrally located (just blocks from Molly Moon's ice cream and Fainting Goat Gelato if you need a sweet summer treat), Wallingford’s wading pool is that “just right” size for a mid-week romp in the water. The pool is right next to the playground which has both a sandbox and “easy” slide area for tiny tots and a great climbing area and bigger slides for more advanced adventurers.

Dahl Playfield Wading Pool
Located between the Ravenna and Wedgewood neighborhoods you'll find this picturesque park and wading pool. We love the funky rock sculptures that are as intriguing to kids as they are as parents, as much as we love the park's clean playground. Our suggestion? Grab your favorite donut from nearby Top Pot for an after-swim treat the kids will thank you for.

Delridge Wading Pool
With so many ways to play at Delridge, the shady wading pool might be a second thought. The park's highlight has got to be the skatepark that boasts both easy runs for beginners and huge bowls for seasoned skaters and hard core BMX bikers. Watch them land sweet tricks from your grassy spot by the "watering hole." There's also a playground for after swim activity and a grassy field that practically screams "kite!" on a sunny summer day.

Seattle Beaches

One of the best parts of living in Seattle is that there is no shortage of family-friendly beaches. Some are great for sand castles, while others have interesting critters awaiting you under every rock. Our advice? When you play at a beach this summer, remember to bring your buckets!

The City of Seattle is posting lifeguards at a selection of Seattle beaches. Lifeguards will be on duty from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on the weekends at these beaches. In addition to those on our list of favorites, lifeguards will also be at Magnuson Beach, Pritchard Beach and West Green Lake Beach. There are three beaches that will be closed for the summer in 2023: Matthews Beach, Seward Park and East Green Lake Beach.

The city encourages families to swim only when and where lifeguards are present so everyone can have a safe summer.

Golden Gardens Park
On a sunny day in Seattle, everyone seems to have the same idea: Get to Golden Gardens immediately! This park has a fabulous updated kids play area behind the community building, but even more alluring is the sandy beach with gently lapping waves and fire pits for epic beach fires. Get here early to reserve a picnic spot. It's truly packed on sunny days and for good reason.

No lifeguard on duty.

Discovery Park
Being the largest park in the city means you'll have to hoof it to get to the beach if you park at the Visitor’s Center or other lots up on the bluff (you can get a beach parking permit at the Environmental Learning Center if you have kids under 8 or seniors in your crew), but the wooded walk (not for strollers) is lovely and drops you off in a whole new world of beach-y wonder. The beach is jam-packed with lots of driftwood for fort-making and the perfect spot for kite flying and beach combing. Psst! Don't forget to plan a stop at the playground near the Visitor's Center.

Madrona Park Beach
If your tots like to dig in the sand while splashing, head down to Madrona Beach, just south of Leschi, where kids can turn on a spigot to fill a tile-lined river bed running through the beach into Lake Washington. Build dams, reservoirs or a moat for your sand castle and then take a dip in the lake.

Madison Park Beach
This smaller beach is all about location, location, location. And while you're not buying a house here, you can set down roots, at least for the day. The beach can be crowded on the sunniest of days, but don't let that stop you from taking up real estate on the sandy shores. When the kids are waterlogged, head to the park just up the hill. Don't forget to stop by the Madison Park Bakery for a cookie or at Scoop Du Jour for a drippy waffle cone before heading home. Nothing tastes better on a hot day.

Alki Beach Park
Head to Alki if you’re looking for a beach walk that just keeps going and going and going. (Hint: If a certain small someone needs to take a stroller nap and you’d like your walk to last more than 10 minutes, head to Alki.) With 2.5 miles of paved sidewalks right along the beach, you’re all set. And, if you’re up for some beach volleyball, you can usually find that too! Psst...if you don't want to pack a lunch, there are plenty of kid-friendly eateries along Alki Avenue.

Mount Baker Park Beach
Although small in comparison to some of the other parks and beaches listed here, this spot in South Seattle is perfect for your little beach bums. There’s a diving board for those who just have to cannon ball and calmer waters for ones who want to wade. All this, and easy parking right next to the beach as well as a playground for more serious running around.

Insider Tips:
1. Sprayparks are chemically treated and filtered much like a swimming pool (water is re-circulated, which makes them a “greener” choice than wading pools) and will automatically shut off and rebalance themselves back to public health standards. Seattle Parks and Recreation would like to remind us all, "not to wear our street clothes in the spraypark, and please do not use it as a shower.” ‘Nuf said!

2. Wading pools are filled and drained daily. They are chemically treated but not filtered throughout the day. They are hand-checked hourly to make sure the water meets health code, but there’s a whole lotta bodies in those pools, so best not to drink the water there either.

3. Remember to call the wading pool hotline at 206-684-7796 to find out what's open and what's not throughout the summer.

4. Please follow all state and local health and safety guidelines when visiting these sprayparks and wading pools so everyone can play safely this summer.

Sprinklers, dump buckets, and loads of fun

As the temps are creeping up, an NYC park with a sprinkler where the kids can cool down is a lifesaver. New York is home to playgrounds and splash pads of all kinds, and you can find these refreshing spots of all shapes, sizes, themes, and intensity in every borough. We’ve rounded up our favorite playgrounds with water features in NYC, including parks for tiny tots, the best Central Park sprinklers, places to spend almost the whole day, and more! For more ways to keep cool, check out our favorite shady playgrounds, our picks of kid-friendly movie theaters and the best NYC museum shows for kids right now.

Pier 51 in Hudson River Park

Ahoy, mateys! A neighborhood favorite with river views, Hudson River Park’s Pier 51 Playground is great for water lovers. At the heart of the playground is a wooden pirate ship. A spiral ramp leads to the lookout, then kids slide down into a water play area outfitted with huge water gushers and buckets. Kids can also “search for lost treasure” in the sand pit.

A yellow, tree-like structure spritzes water for those kiddies who can’t get enough of H20. Brass animals, such as turtles and crabs, adorn the playground, and the sand play area and fences explain Manhattan’s ecological history. Little tots like wading in the moving stream and playing in the small spray sprinklers. Don’t forget your towels and sunscreen!

Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Chelsea Park
The Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Hudson River Park has always been a popular spot for locals and otherwise, and a $34 million overhaul from architect Michael Van-Valkenburgh (his firm is behind the design of Brooklyn Bridge Park as well) brought playground equipment from Danish firm MONSTRUM to the northeast for the first time. Gentle sprinklers are among play structures that include a giant, one-of-a-kind, multicolor Robina wood pipefish (a species found in the Hudson), a 64-foot wooden slide, plus a large sandpit, and limestone cattle head sculptures salvaged from an old building in the meatpacking district.

The Ancient Playground in Central Park
Located near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this Central Park playground has climbing pyramids and other play features inspired by the museum’s collection of Egyptian Art. The Ancient Playground has two user-activated water features. Big kids can enjoy the main climbing structure where water runs down an obelisk and cascades like a mini-waterfall into an open area with water jets; a more tame area for younger children features spray nozzles embedded in the walls.

Madison Square Park Playground
This playground, officially known as the Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground, is known as a smaller space with big fun. The playground features a jungle gym and appropriate play equipment for both tots and older kids. The highlight during the summer is when the 15-foot tall waterwheel and sprinklers are activated. Bonus: a LEGO store/experience is located a stone’s throw away on 5th Avenue at 23rd Street. Make it a day out: There are Wifi hotspots throughout the park, and Eataly is right across the street on Fifth Ave.

The Water Lab at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Other splash pads pale in comparison to this incredible water play space. Set within natural rock structures, kids can run through water jets, frolic in sprinklers, or use pumps to create their own water fountains. To complete the beach feel, there’s a huge sand pit and swings nearby.

The Water Lab opens to the public once temperatures reach a steady 80+ degrees, and closes down in inclement weather. Check ahead! And if you’re concerned about getting your belongings wet, there are lockers available for free and for very cheap (25 cents!) at Pier 2 and 5.

Travers Park Playground in Jackson Heights
Travers Park got a facelift back in 2010. Founded in 1948, it was named after community leader Thomas J. Travers. Kids love being in a life-size garden oasis with leaf-and-vine-shaped spray showers. Nearby there is also an area for handball, tennis and roller hockey for the big ones.

LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park

In the winter, the Prospect Park LeFrak Center at Lakeside is an ice skating rink, but it transforms into a splash pad come summer. The area has dozens of water jets shooting out periodically, and a playtime favorite for the regulars is bringing buckets and cups to fill and dump. The Splash Pad is open daily from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. If you’re hungry, grab a bite at the Bluestone Cafe on site. If you’re there on a Sunday, check out Smorgasburg nearby at the park’s Breeze Hill. Want to do something while drying off? Rent a bicycle or a boat for a spin on land or the lake.

J.J. Byrne Playground in Park Slope
After a major makeover in 2012, this Park Slope gem is now loaded with activities for kids of all ages and tons of room to roam. (It’s the site of the Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776, under the leadership of General Washington.) The littlest kiddos will love the colorful farm animal cutouts, interactive panels and scaled-down slides. Older kids can test their balance and climbing skills on a giant, caterpillar-shaped structure.

On warm days, kids flock to the sprinkler area, which is complete with water cannons. If all of those features leave your kids wanting more, ongoing public garden projects can be found on the west end of the park near the Old Stone House, and large athletic fields are beyond that for kicking or throwing a ball around.

Whether you are looking for the best playgrounds in Central Park, or ones that have been renovated in the last few years, this list has it all

NYC’s playgrounds were already awesome, but recent upgrades have made many of them even more epic destinations of fun for kids (and parents!). No matter what your kid’s age or style of play is, there’s an NYC playground for them.

We’ve rounded up all of our intel on the best NYC parks and playgrounds for kids—from the best playgrounds from around the city’s boroughs (including Brooklyn and Manhattan playgrounds), to cool splash pads and shady spots to cool down in the summer. Pack up some water, a change of clothes, a towel, and some snacks…and go play!

Our Favorite Manhattan Playgrounds

Teardrop Park in Battery Park

The two-acre, sustainable Teardrop Park was designed by child development experts and it shows. The park’s play elements are integrated into the awesome landscape, which allows children to interact with water, plants, rock, and sand. The shadier southern half of the park features a rock step-path that leads up to a long slide, two sand pits, “theatre steps,” and a water playground. The northern half of the park features a broad lawn (which receives lots of sunlight), park benches, a wetland, and a perched gathering area made from rocks, the last of which is an installation created by artist Ann Hamilton.

Dividing these two areas is a large wall, composed of rocks brought to lower Manhattan from elsewhere in New York State. A short tunnel connects the two areas, and paths crisscross the site, providing elevated views within the park and beyond as well as connections across the park. It’s a hidden gem of a spot for those really looking to connect with nature and take a literal few steps out of the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Restrooms: Located at the northwest corner and in the lower level of the Solaire Building, across the street from the Park House.

Battery Playscape in Battery Park
This playground is a natural-feeling oasis located right alongside the Seaglass Carousel that opened in 2021. The play structures draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape and feature open-ended play. There are plenty of spaces to run, play, slide, and climb, and the designs feature plenty of fun shapes and textures to look at and touch. Plus, it was opened with Hurricane Sandy in mind, and the entire space (including the plants) is designed to “flood and recover” in case of flooding. Battery Playscape is also home to ShowBox, a small stage that frequently hosts free plays, puppet shows, improv sessions, and more.

Restrooms: None on-site, but there are restrooms just a few minutes walk from the playground.

Toll Family Playground in Central Park
The Toll Family Playground is a prime spot for toddlers and preschool kids, offering a full selection of features for a wide variety of play. The hallmark of the playground is two small house structures, a nod to similar shelters from the playground’s original 1936 design. (The playground was renovated in 2018.)

You’ll also find a smaller slide and play structure, swings, spinner, and spring toys, and an area for sand play that’s sized for smaller children. The playground is located at the base of Summit Rock, the highest point in the park and a popular point of interest.

Restrooms: None on-site. The closest park restrooms are located at Delacorte Theater, around 80th Street.

Billy Johnson Playground in Central Park
Inspired by the Central Park nature that surrounds it, this playground is like a miniature version of the park.  The playground received a facelift in 2018, adding more opportunities for play and interaction while maintaining its charming natural feel. Kids can slide down granite slides (meant to feel like a smaller version of sliding down one of the park’s famous rock formations), walk across a miniature bridge, follow natural-feeling trails, or hang out in the wooden play structure.

Restrooms: Be aware that the closest restrooms are located at Heckscher Playground, which is a bit of a walk.

Pier 25 Playground at Hudson River Park

River Park’s Pier 25 Playground is the golden ticket of playgrounds with a rock climbing wall, two space-age climbing structures for big kids, small slides for toddlers, a modern merry-go-round, a roomy sandbox, multiple swing sets, and a huge water play area. Not to mention, it’s next door to a skate park, snack shack, mini-golf course (for a fee), beach volleyball court, and soccer field.

Need more? Kids can explore a historic steamship and tugboat! The park also features an on-site Art Shack, where kids can get crafty and creative at no cost. Ice cream and light snacks can be purchased nearby for a good cause: Proceeds support the park and Manhattan-based youth programs.

Dinosaur Playground in Riverside Park
This playground has swings, two sandboxes, a summer spray shower, lots of places to climb, and plenty of shade provided by large trees. But the playground’s main attraction is its namesake: two fiberglass dinosaurs! The Triceratops and hadrosaur (which you may recognize by its other name, a duckbill dinosaur) offer a whimsical space for climbing and imaginative play. Plus, Dinosaur Playground is located in Riverside Park, which has spectacular views of the Hudson River and New Jersey, and many places to explore and rest when the little ones have had their fill of playing.

The Ancient Playground in Central Park

https://www.instagram.com/p/CqQoKWVOobS/?hidecaption=true

The Ancient Playground is one of Central Park’s adventure-style playgrounds, which features play structures that you wouldn’t normally find in a traditional playground. The popular play spot is inspired by the Egyptian exhibits at the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art, located a stone’s throw away from the playground. It’s a perfect place to visit for a picnic and some fun in the sun after a trip to the museum.

Kids can scramble around on the pyramids, obelisk, and sundial—or frolic in the sandbox, swings, and slides. Sprinklers will cool down steaming kiddos on hot days. Be on the lookout for some beautiful sculptures depicting different fairy tales scattered throughout the playground, like a brass squirrel and peacock, and various storybook fables on the playground gates.

Indian Road Playground at Inwood Hill Park
Named after the Indian settlement that used to stand on the site, Indian Road Playground is a community space that’s maintained and fundraised by the Friends of the Indian Road Playgrond organization. The playground is made up of muted browns and blues, looking like it belongs in the middle of the natural space it resides in. It’s themed around chess and checkers, complete with pawn-shaped sprinklers and a checkerboard painted on the pavement. There’s also a complete playground set, including a wooden climbing structure and swings. Rocks form places to climb or sit, making for a hybrid naturalistic and modern playground space for all ages.

Discovery Playground in Fort Washington Park
The Discovery Playground is built right into its surroundings, with slides and benches standing literally at the bases of large trees. This means there’s plenty of shade all summer long, and that kids can interact with both structured playground equipment and unstructured imaginative play with the surrounding natural environment. There’s a charming treehouse made of tree trunks, a rope web for climbing, a mini-mountain of rocks, and a sand pit.

Our Favorite Brooklyn Playgrounds

Domino Park Playground

This playground is part of Domino Park, a five-acre park that opened in 2018. Built on the former site of the Domino Sugar Factory in North Williamsburg, this park provides gorgeous views of the East River. Domino Park is home to a one-of-a-kind playground designed by Mark Reigelman that’s inspired by the sugar refining process. It’s as fun to play in as it is to look at, with slides short and steep, ladders to scale, web tunnels to traverse, pulleys, platforms and stairs. There’s seating nearby for grownups, and faux turf for relaxing on. Tacos from the park’s food vendor Tacocina are nearby, but expect a line. Take note that wildly-popular pizza place Roberta’s has a location nearby at 6 Grand Street.

Restrooms: In the park, a short stroll away (very nice trailers when we visited).

Pier 3 at Brooklyn Bridge Park
While not exactly a playground, Pier 3 is worth checking out with the kids for at least a couple of reasons. First, it’s the final pier to be converted to park space in Brooklyn Bridge Park, in 2018. Second, it’s home to numerous interactive pieces, many of which happen to demonstrate scientific principles of sound and light. On one part of the pier, hedges of various shapes and sizes create a natural labyrinth with surprises around every turn: a walk-in kaleidoscope (extra large mirrored panels) parabolic reflectors, sound tubes, dance chimes, and stone seating from Gunther Beltzig. When you’re done, head to the massive open lawn to run around or lounge.

Harmony Playground in Prospect Park
Located next to the Prospect Park bandshell, this enormous playground was designed with music in mind. Little ones will find the harp and trumpet-shaped sprinklers totally refreshing in warmer weather. When they’re done, they can clang out a tune on the larger-than-life xylophones. Jungle gym equipment areas featuring slides, ramps and ladders are available for both toddlers and big kids.

The result is a very natural and unstructured playground for kids of all ages, allowing children to closely interact with nature.

Pier 6 Playgrounds in Brooklyn Bridge Park

This playground is, quite frankly, absurd in its offerings. A giant wooden teepee with slide exit, large spherical climbing structures and more slides built into the landscape are just a few of the highlights. On warm days, the Water Lab is packed with kids of all ages splashing around in the sprinklers and wading pool area. If they prefer to stay dry, your tots can put their building skills to the test in one of the city’s largest sandboxes. Looking for high-flying fun? Check out Swing Valley’s ten swing sets and Tarzan rope. Not for nothing: the landscaping, nearby waterside, and yummy food vendors at the park don’t hurt either.

Betsy Head Memorial Playground at Betsy Head Park
After a multi-year, $30 million overhaul, this Brownsville park has everything you could want. Additions include a skate park, a parkour course, an inclusionary basketball course for self-competition, handball and basketball courts, an event space, running track, athletic field, traverse wall and new play structures. Plus new plantings, game tables and renovated bathrooms. The park is also home to the city’s second Imagination Playground—a collection of large blue foam building blocks that encourage creativity and collaboration. (The first one, located in Manhattan’s Seaport District, is one of our favorites in the city.) Plus: there’s a huge pool in the summer.

North Side Playground in Ft. Greene Park
Also affectionately known as New Fort Greene Park, this playground can be a nice alternative to the often-crowded play area on the other side of the park. The main attraction is a huge, fort-shaped structure, complete with slides, ramps, monkey bars and a couple of treehouse-like hangouts. A separate toddler area is available for the smaller set, complete with baby swings and pint-sized climbing equipment. Take a break from playing to check out the pillars surrounding the playground to learn the official state animal of each of the thirteen original colonies. Leif Ericson Park Playground in Bay Ridge
Named for Viking Leif Ericson, one of the first Europeans to set foot on North American soil, it’s fitting that the equipment at this playground has a Viking theme. Kids can climb the oar ladders and run across the wooden planks in the Viking ship-shaped play structure, or run through the flower-shaped sprinklers in the water play area.  While the park tends to get crowded, it still has a true neighborhood feel.

Lincoln Terrace Park Playground in Crown Heights
Opened in 2019, this bright new play space forms a circular portion in Lincoln Terrace / Arthur S. Somers Park. It has separate play areas for big and small kids, slides, rope webs for climbing, and tons of monkey bars for kids to clamber around on. Besides the typical playground fare, the playground has some more open-ended play fixtures, like integrated natural spaces, colorful “stepping stones,” and some adorable little hobbit houses. There are sprinklers on-site as well, to cool down little visitors in the summer heat.

Gantry Plaza State Park

Part sprinkler, part sculpture, and the water feature at Gantry Plaza State Park is not only cool-looking, but it also helps conserve water, operating for 45 minutes at a time. The shiny metal rods are kid-activated, and users can also regulate the water pressure as well. Nearby hammocks and seats offer a place to rest and enjoy the spectacular view of midtown. Don’t forget to take a stroll in the 12-acre riverside park and marvel at the Pepsi Cola sign or the large metal gantries—vestiges of the shipping industry—the structures that give the park its name.

Playground for All Children in Flushing Meadows Corona Park
This playground was specially designed to be accessible to children with disabilities. It was the first of its kind when it opened in 1984, and served as inspiration for others to open in other locations in NYC, as well as across the United States. The equipment is meant to accommodate kids ages 3 through 12, and features play structures that allow kids who use crutches, walkers, canes, or wheelchairs to enjoy the same kind of fun that able-bodied kids can achieve. The space includes a race track that surrounds an ADA-accessible splash pad, a 12-foot-long suspension bridge that’s equipped with safety measures, slides, and swings—all created to be accessible for all children. Plus, plaques around the park teach kids about nature in English and braille.

Paul Raimonda Playground in Astoria
Take your little composers and performers out to this musical playground in Astoria for a frolicing fun time. The playground was originally called the Steinway Community Playground, named after the famous piano makers Steinway & Sons. Despite the new name (renamed to honor Paul Raimonda, a local community activist), the playground retains its musical origins in the play structures on offer. The main attraction is the piano-shaped sprinkler system, but there’s also a lyrical flow to the rest of the playground’s structures, which rise up and down like a melody. Though if this goes over your tot’s head, they’ll still love to cross the piano bridge or climb over and under the different curved structures.

Restrooms: There are restrooms in the playground.

Jurassic Playground in Flushing Meadows Corona Park
The Jurassic Playground and its sister playground across the lake, the Triassic Playground are themed around—of course—dinosaurs! The playground pays homage to “Dinoland,” an exhibit from the 1964-5 World’s Fair held in Flushing Meadows Park. Alongside swings and monkey bars, the playground has some dino-inspired structures, like a curved ladder built like the spines of a stegosaurus. There’s also a large apatosaurus structure, and dino art depicting every kid’s favorites, from the triceratops to the ankylosaurus.

Restrooms: None in the playground. The closest restrooms are by the basketball courts north of the playground, on Grand Central Parkway.

The western playground was newly updated in 2019 and is now home to brand new play equipment and safety flooring in bright and colorful patterns, sprinklers for hot summer days, and a new adult fitness equipment section. Our Favorite Staten Island Playgrounds

E.M.T. Christopher J. Prescott Playground
If you have a child who’s on the autism spectrum, they’ll feel right at home at this playground. Renamed in 1997 after a local Staten Island E.M.T. (he attended the school that stands by the playground), who died in the line of duty. The playground received a facelift in 2021, and now includes a brand new Sensory Playground, designed specifically for kids with autism. There are lots of spaces to interact with, including a depiction of the sign language alphabet, sensory boards for a variety of tactile feedback, metal drums, and more… in addition to the usual swing and climbing set. Sprinklers in the shape of rocks adorn the accessible splash pad, and there are some unique play spots like a slide composed of rollers for even more sensory feedback.

Never has anyone been so excited to be shipwrecked! This Staten Island playground is also known as Pirate Park and features a huge boat to explore and fun play equipment to climb. Structures are inspired by well-known Island mainstays like the Staten Island Ferry and the Lighthouse, and once the kids are done climbing, they can cool off in the spray showers.

Other Awesome NYC Playgrounds

play:groundNYC at Governors Island

This playground is more like a junkyard, and heads up: parents aren’t allowed in! Kids are given free reign to discover, create, and build (with real tools!) as they wish. The space is watched over by trained “playworkers,” who support kids in their play, and help assess risk and keep things safe. Other than these helpers, the kids have all the power over how they play and what their play space looks like. The Yard is only open on weekends, April through November. It’s free to play, but note that there tends to be a wait.

And while you’re here on Governors Island, you don’t want to miss the other play spaces it has to offer. We highly recommend having a go at Slide Hill, which includes a slide that’s a whopping three stories tall, and checking out the Hammock Grove Play Area, where kids can clamber around on naturalistic structures made of logs and ropes.

Restrooms: Restrooms are located all around the island.

Imagination Playground

Imagination Playground, designed by famed architect (and dad) David Rockwell, is an interactive play space that prompts kids to engage in unstructured creative free play and make a play space of their own. Kids use sand, water and loose parts like giant foam blocks, mats, and fabric to engage in fantasy and cooperative play, as well as good old fashioned running around like nuts.

The flagship Imagination Playground is located near South Street Seaport at Burling Slip (South St., Front St. and John St.). Additional Imagination Playgrounds pop up in playgrounds around the city as well. Check the NYC Parks page to find a location near you!

Best NYC Parks with Shade

Catbird Playground in Carl Schurz Park
Located on the south end of Yorkville’s lovely Carl Schurz Park (also home to the mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion) Catbird Playground takes its name from a James Thurber short story. You’ll find climbing structures, swings, monkey bars, rings, a sandbox and spray showers—all under the cover of shade mature trees. The park, home to two dog runs, is also known for being very dog-friendly.

Hippo Playground in Riverside Park

If hippos don’t know how to keep cool, who does? Much beloved by the community, the Safari Playground takes its more common name “Hippo Playground” from the impossible-to-miss Bob Cassily hippopotamus statues found “frolicking” in the park.  A particularly good spot for young ones, the playground includes swings, a wood play structure, a jungle gym, a slide, a soft play surface, a sand pit, and a spray fountain. There are also picnic tables and a cool Joan of Arc statue at 93rd Street, just a brief walk away. Lots of seasonal events take place here, so be on the lookout for fun things in the works.

This rustic and naturalistic playground has miniatures of Central Park features, like a mini-Gapstow Bridge and granite slides meant to recreate the experience of climbing on and sliding down one of the park’s huge rock formations. The playground is located in the middle one of the more wooded areas of the park, which means tons of trees casting comfortable shade onto the play areas. A number of pergolas provide additional shade on the playground and over the benches.

Pier One at Brooklyn Bridge Park
An unsung hero in Brooklyn Bridge Park (often overshadowed, so to speak, by Slide Mountain and Swing Valley over on Pier 6) the Pier 1 play space is notable for a couple of reasons. While we love the playgrounds at BBP, shade can be sparse. However, this playground is an exception and is mercifully surrounded by greenery. It’s tucked away and feels like a hidden sanctuary!

The playground is also a fantastic space for the younger set; babies and toddlers can explore low-lying turtles, a colorful mini house and climbing structure, and enjoy some swing time.

Restrooms: The closest restrooms are located on Pier One, in a trailer near Lizzmonade. There are more restrooms on Pier 2, under Squibb Bridge.

St. Mary’s Playground in Gowanus
It’s so limiting to think of shade coming just from trees. In the city—and in the proud industrial Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus—the shade comes from train tracks overhead. It sounds counter-intuitive, but this playground, located beneath the F/G train overpass, is a pleasant place to spend some time. It features ADA-accessible playground equipment for kids of all ages, lots of room to roam, a safety surface underfoot, and gentle spray showers that are activated at the touch of a button.

Charybdis Playground in Astoria Park

Taking its name from Greek mythology (Charybdis was the daughter of Poseidon, and responsible for some rough waters near Sicily) this playground is found on the western edge of Astoria Park. In addition to shade, this park offers lovely views of the East River, and the Triborough and Hells Gate Bridges, as well as photo-worthy sunsets. Bonus: It underwent major renovations a few years ago and the splash pad area is epic! Plus, Astoria Park is also home to one of our favorite free public pools in the city.

Restrooms: Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located in the playground.

What We Loved at Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana

The beach:

Juanillo Beach, with its powdery white sand, low palms that sway gently in the breeze, and clear turquoise water, is the perfect place to lounge the day away. Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana makes it even easier with a selection of Balinese beach beds that are free for resort guests. Keep in mind that because the beds are free, they can get taken early in the morning; the good news is that guests didn’t occupy the beds all day. So if you were late getting out, you’d still get a chance throughout the day. If you decide to spend the day at the beach, there is a beach bar and restaurant on the beach. There is a buoy across the entire length of the beach making it a good spot for swimming with kids.

The Pools:

The pool area is almost as big as the beach, with an adults-only section, a kids’ area, and a general area. With the many options to choose from depending on whether you are on the family or the adults’ side, you don’t have to worry about getting space at the pool. You can reserve Balinese beds for the day at the pool for a nominal cost. There is even a splash pad and baby pool area for families with infants.

St. Somewhere Spa

The world-famous St. Somewhere Spa offers many healing and holistic treatments to ease stress, including massage, body wraps, and facials. They also have a water program, including a hydrotherapy area with a sauna, steam room, red-light shower, sensory pools, thermal loungers, and more. The spa also has a lagoon-like “polar pool” where water is kept at 50 ° F to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation.

The Golfers Package :

The new and exclusive Golfing in Paradise package offers guests twice the play time at the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course Punta Espada, ranked as the #1 course in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golfweek. The golf course is located just a short drive away from the resort. In addition, the package includes coverage for green fees, cart fees, and caddie fees, providing guests with a hassle-free and enjoyable golfing experience.

Where to Eat at Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana

Most restaurants are available to the whole family, except Rum Runners, which is adults-only. JWB Steakhouse is both adult and family-friendly, with a separation between the two sides. All the restaurants offer complete decadence, and the only recommendation is to attempt to try them all.

The Boathouse Eatery
This buffet-style restaurant is one of the most impressive we’ve seen with its large variety of options. You’ll want to go to the boathouse for breakfast or brunch. You can get most of your items fresh to order, and they even have fresh juice stations and paleo + keto pancake options.

There are many stations if you want something quick, but if you have the time, treat yourself to delicious eggs of any style, made-to-order fluffy pancakes and golden waffles, pastries, and smoothies your way. This might be the largest selection of vegetarian and vegan options catering to different dietary and lifestyle needs.

KöS – Mediterranean Tavern
The culinary journey in KöS is where the Mediterranean meets the Middle East. KöS offers a full a la carte menu and a Chef attended station. KöS is located poolside, near the family-friendly pool.

Cheeseburger In Paradise
“Cheeseburger in paradise, heaven on earth with an onion slice, not too particular, not too precise.” Located directly on the beach, it’s the perfect spot for a quick bite or a full lunch.

LandShark Brewery & Grill
Beer lovers rejoice! LandShark Brewery is as much a surprise as a treat. Open from lunchtime until 1 a.m.; it’s the ideal place to enjoy a LandShark Lager made in the on-site brewery. If you want to celebrate an event with friends or family, the restaurant’s second floor can be reserved for private parties of up to 80 guests. In the evenings, there is often live music.

Frank & Lola’s- Italian Trattoria
Frank & Lola’s open-kitchen concept dials up the Italian trattoria experience, offering a wide selection of classic dishes made from ingredients sourced from Italy. Enjoy your pick of homemade pasta and complement your meal with one of the many carefully curated wines displayed in the showcase cellar. Celebrating a special occasion? You can book a private dinner inside the wine cellar or on one of the restaurant’s two romantic terraces.

JWB Steakhouse
The ultimate of fine dining within the Margaritaville Island Reserve collection, JWB is a destination in and of itself. Guests enjoy a lavish four-course dinner that encompasses mouthwatering appetizers, crisp salads, hearty entrees, and decadent desserts—all included in your stay.

Mon So Wi
Mon So Wi brings the best of Pan-Asian cuisine inspired by the vibrant street food scene of Asia. The vibe in the restaurant is happy and energetic. The menu includes classic street food favorites like satay ribeye skewers, crispy-fried Vietnamese spring rolls, and samosas with spicy coriander sauce.

Rum Runners
This is an adults-only restaurant open from 12-5. The Dominican Republic and the West Indies have a long history of producing some of the best rum in the world, Rum Runners offers guests an opportunity to explore and savor this history. Whether you go for the rum or the food, get the churros dessert.

Compass – Gin Inspired Bar
There are five bars to choose from and Compass is a fave on the family side primarily because it’s in the lobby of the family section, so you don’t have to go too far from the rooms. Along with a full bar offering, Compass showcases a wide array of the world’s most recognized artisan gins. Compass is a great spot for pre-dinner or late-evening cocktails. Even better, some evenings there’s a pianist.

Joe Merchant’s Coffee & Provisions
Here you’ll find freshly brewed Dominican coffee and espresso drinks, natural smoothies, freshly baked pastries, and sandwiches and desserts. You’ll also find many gluten-free and vegetarian options and multiple milk options here. A favorite was the fresh juices you can take with you to the beach or if you are going on an excursion for the day.

Your Personalized Minibar
Adults and kids will love the personalized mini bar concept. Instead of putting the same items in the minibar every day, you get a certain amount of points that can be used at Joe Merchant’s to customize your minibar. Whether that’s beer and wine, KitKat and Oreo, or nuts and chips, you have an entire store to choose from. This was one of the biggest highlights for the kids.

Tips for making the most out of your stay at Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana:

  • Downloading the app is a great way to see all the offerings throughout your stay. Most restaurant menus are directly on the app, but you can ask for a regular menu if you don’t want to walk around with your phone.
  • Various watersports are included, including paddleboard, catamaran, and snorkeling.
  • If you feel like staying active, you can start the day with Beach Front Yoga, and get things moving with a game of tennis, pickleball, or beach volleyball.
  • The hack that parents in the know use for kids who are looking for more children’s activities like a waterpark is to break up the trip with four nights at a kid-friendly property like Nickelodeon Resorts and then spend the last three nights at Margaritaville Cap Cana, where the kids still get a chance to have fun but the parents really truly get the opportunity to relax in luxury, enjoy fine dining restaurants, and experience the bliss of the Cap Cana beach and surrounding areas.
  •  If you’d like a night without the kids, there is a certified babysitting service available at additional costs.

Things to do nearby Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana

There is so much to do on the resort you might not want to venture out, but if you are looking for day trip ideas:

  1. Go on a deep-sea fishing trip: Cap Cana is known for its excellent deep-sea fishing opportunities. You can charter a boat and go fishing for marlin, tuna, and other game fish in the deep waters surrounding Cap Cana.
  2. Island Tour: Saona Island and Catalina Island are two popular day trip destinations from Punta Cana, located off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic. Saona Island is a protected nature reserve that boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. On the way to the island, the tour includes stopping along the way to snorkel or swim in the clear waters. Once on the island, visitors can relax on the beach, take a walk through the mangrove forests, or enjoy a traditional Dominican lunch. Saona Island is also home to various wildlife, including iguanas, sea turtles, and various birds. Catalina Island is another popular day trip destination known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. Visitors can swim, snorkel, or dive in the reef. Both Saona Island and Catalina Island offer visitors the chance to escape the crowds of Punta Cana and experience some of the natural beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic.
  3. Visit the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park: This nature reserve is an excellent place for kids to learn about the local flora and fauna. They can hike through the forest, swim in the natural lagoons, and observe the many different species of plants and animals.

Editor’s note: This trip was paid for by Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana but all opinions belong to the writer.

Walking along the crushed oyster shell paths of Seabrook, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time. A cross between Andy Griffith’s Mayberry and a quaint New England beach town, life moves at a welcomed and slower pace here. Seabrook’s charm is undeniable, and a summer stay makes for an unbelievably easy family vacation. Everything you need is just a five-minute walk (or bike ride) away—from the pristine beaches of the Pacific Ocean to endless opportunities for recreation. Trust us, when it comes to things to do with kids in Seabrook, you’ll never run out of options.

Book Your Beach House

A row of bikes in front of cottages at Seabrook Wa

Finding that just-right beach house is the first step in planning an unforgettable family vacation to Seabrook. With so many rentals to choose from, narrowing it down to find exactly what your family needs is pretty easy to do. Seabrook’s got pet-friendly cottages, cottages with ocean views and cottages that sleep anywhere from two to twenty-plus people. Each one comes with different perks like hot tubs, gas grills, fire pits, toy closets and even baby gear (think high chairs or pack-n-plays) that make renting an easy option for families, no matter where you're traveling from. Plus, each rental has its own distinct personality, with cheeky names to match like "Tide Together,” “Hook, Wine and Sinker” and “Seas the Day.”

One of the best parts of renting a vacation home at Seabrook is that it can be your home away from home. You’ll find everything you rely on to keep your family rolling, from your coffee maker to your washing machine, here. And if you forgot to pack something in the suitcase, or don’t feel like stopping by a grocery store to stock up on the drive out to the coast, you can rely on the Front Street Market to fill in the gaps. It’s open seven days a week and has just about everything you need, including the baby wipes and sunscreen you forgot at home.

Tips for Finding the Right Beach House

Oyster shells line the walkway of paths outside cottages in Seabrook, Wa

While you’re browsing Seabrook’s rental cottages, check floor plans and pictures carefully. Some cottages feature loft bedrooms (accessed by ladders) that might give pause to toddler parents, but would be awesome for grade schoolers. Finding your cabin on the property map is also a good idea. Based on what your kiddos love (think: the beach or playground vs. walking trails), you may want to be closer to one part of town than another. But when it really comes down to it, Seabrook‘s thoughtfully designed community means you’re never more than five minutes from where you want to be.

Explore the Shore

A family walks down to the beach at Seabrook, Wa

Beyond being an easy-to-plan family vacation destination, Seabrook’s big draw has got to be its expansive Pacific Ocean shoreline. It’s the pristine beach that summer vacations are made of, with miles of silky sand made for sculpting sandcastles, digging moats and burying yourself …or at least a leg or two. It’s also where you’ll find plenty of wide-open space to fly a kite, kick a ball around, toss a Frisbee or even play beach volleyball. For many, it’s the place to give skim boarding a try. In winter, you can dig up delicious razor clams; then bring them back to your place for a big clambake dinner with the kids (psst… you’ll need a license to do this).

A family flies kites on the beach at Seabrook, WA

However your family plans to spend they day at the beach, you don’t have to worry about packing too much from home. Many of Seabrook’s vacation rentals come with beach basics like collapsible chairs and beach toys for the kids. Plus, what you don’t find at the house, you can buy in town. Brooklets has an array of beach games and toys, and you can pick up extra sunscreen, sun hats and water bottles at Red Cedar Surf Co. just across the street. One thing to note is that both of the beach entrances involve a lot of stairs, so strollers are a no-go. Instead, bring a beach bag and enlist your little beach bums to help haul your gear from your nearby cottage.

Beyond the Beach

Kids ride bikes at Seabrook Wa

Go on a family bike ride
One thing you’ll notice at Seabrook is people out riding bikes—all the time and everywhere. It’s no surprise biking one of the top two ways to get around. The roads were specifically designed with cyclist (and pedestrian) safety in mind. You’ve got every reason to jump on a bike and explore this charming community; we’re sure you’ll find unexpected treasures along the way. Although you never know what’s around the next corner, if we were to guess, we’d say bocce ball and shuffleboard courts, multi-use trails and hidden courtyards where families can stop to play games or build a fire on a cool night (hint: the outdoor fireplaces and pits make really good s’mores). It’s best to stop by Bucks NW when you first get into town to rent bicycles.

Insider tip: Seabrook has partnered with the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance to build some killer mountain bike trails around the property. If you want to introduce the kids to the sport, hit the DNR trails. You’ll find them off Narnia Trail, in the Farm District.

A kid finds a fairy house along the trails of Seabrook wa

Explore the hiking trails
A network of hiking trails winds through the town as well. While these trails will get you from here to there, depending on where you’re staying, they’re also fun to explore just because. Of all the hikes to find, our favorite is the (unofficial) gnome trail. You’ll find it mid- neighborhood, behind the stump treehouse (another place your kids will love). All it takes is one fairy house to catch your eye and before you know it, you’ve wandered deep into the forest in search of the next fairy house, gnome home or mushroom mansion. The best part about Seabrook hikes is that the trails are relatively short, like they were tailor-made for families with young kids.

Families swim at the indoor pool at Seabrook Wa
courtesy Seabrook

Make a splash a the indoor pool
Because even in the summertime, you can’t count on sunny skies in the Pacific Northwest, Seabrook has an indoor pool and hot tub. It’s open for family swim from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in the summer. The pool gets pretty busy on the weekends. Our suggestion is to hit the pool in the morning, before the marine layer burns off, to avoid the crowds. Then head to the beach in the afternoon when sun is more likely to show itself. Water play all day is definitely the way to go here.

kids explore a garden at seabrook wa

Play at the playground & sports court
There’s a reason playgrounds are a parent’s best friend. Not only do they get the kids outside, but if you’re lucky, an extra long play session will tire them out just in time for nap. Even on vacation, simple pleasures like time at the playground are a treat. Walk or bike to the playground at Seabrook, just outside the Farm District. It’s got everything kids want including swings, slides, places to climb and a zip line. Basketball courts (balls are out for guests to use) and the dog park are right there too.

Find horses, chicks and ducks
Just beyond the playground is the Farm District. Follow the trail to the barn where you may spot horses (please don’t feed them or enter the barn) and will surely see chickens and ducks just outside. There’s a community garden here too. Residents grow everything from fruits and veggies to flowers in these plots that are open for guests to explore.

Go on a Guided Tour

Two people kayak along the Copalis River near Seabrook Wa

When you’re ready to get out and explore beyond Seabrook, head to Buck’s NW downtown to find all the adventures. Born and raised on the Pacific Coast, Buck is a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about introducing families to area. If you can think up an outdoor adventure, chances are Buck can guide you through it. The summer months are the perfect time to book a kayak tour. For families, we recommend the Ghost Forest Tour down the Copalis River. It’s a two- to three-hour guided history lesson where you’ll learn about a tsunami that hit the Pacific Coast in 1700 and devastated the area, leaving behind ghost trees. There is no minimum age for this guided trip—families can ride in tandem kayaks so kids of all ages can participate safely. Other guided experiences through Buck’s NW include hiking, biking, surfing (it’s a year-round sport here), fishing and SUP. However, if your family doesn’t need a lesson or a tour, Buck’s NW is also a great place to rent what you need.

Insider tip: Capture your Seabrook beach adventures with a Pink Fin Photography lifestyle family photo session.

Where to Grab Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner

Kids eat at a restaurant at seabrook wa

Pretty much everyone in Seabrook heads to the Vista Bakeshop for their morning coffee and a bite for breakfast. It’s why you’ll usually find a short line out the door, or folks milling around waiting for their coffee order to come up. Pastries are the bakeshop’s specialty, and no matter what you order (sweet or savory) you won’t be disappointed.

When it comes to lunch and dinner, there are a few family-friendly spots in town to choose from. Koko’s Restaurant & Tequila Bar is where you’ll find modern Latin cuisine and epic ocean views. They offer indoor and outdoor seating options and feature flavorful and fresh takes on Latin cuisine, with lots of GF, vegetarian and vegan dishes. Our tip? Order the Pablano-Cashew Enchiladas. Frontager’s Pizza Co. is another option with kid-appeal. It’s a serious pie house serving up gourmet, brick-oven, Northwest-style pizza, salads and Italian sodas. With indoor, outdoor and take-out options, it’s hard to go wrong here. You’ll find amazing chicken sandwiches at the Cookie’s Country Chicken food truck (open Thursdays through Saturdays), and the new Rising Tide Tavern serves up gourmet pub fare in Town Center. Then there's Growler's Alley Beer Garden where you can grab food, a cold beer and listen to music right across the street from the Town Hall.

A kid shows off candy from the Sweet Life in Seabrook Wa

Finish it all off with a treat from Sweet Life, the cutest little ice cream and candy shop you've ever seen. They make small batch, organic ice cream that holds its own against anything you’d find in the big city. But before you can order ice cream, you’ve got to navigate an array of retro candy, known brands and bean-to-bar chocolates that will leave your sweet tooth aching. If you’re thinking dessert with an ocean view, we’re right there with you.

Shop at Seabrook’s Town Center

Kids pose at an oversized chair at Seabrook wa

Seabrook’s Town Center now has more shops than ever (with others on their way). Top on the list for families to check out is Brooklets Toys. Filled from floor to ceiling with top toy brands kids and parents love, it’s the place to go before you hit the beach—check out the ice cream cone sand toy set—or when you need a few new toys to keep the kids busy on the plane ride home (hint: the woodland fairy peel-and-stick booklet is too cute and easy to pack.). Right next door is Magnolia’s Clothing Boutique, a clothing shop that understands moms want to be both stylish and comfy. Head in to find quintessentially PNW gear like soft tees, cozy sweatshirts or great pair of jeans. When it comes to logo wear, Tides by Seabrook has what you need to remember your family vacation, whether it’s beanies, trucker hats or your new favorite hoodie.

Launch Other Adventures

Another Seabrook plus is its location. It’s an easy launching point to some of the most scenic, out-of-the-way spots in Washington. Add a day trip adventure to your stay when you head north to Kalaloch, where you can check out the famous Tree of Life, or picturesque Ruby Beach. Lake Quinault is another nearby destination worth exploring. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the rainforest and visit the Valley of the Rainforest Giants, home to some of the world’s oldest trees. Both are about an hour’s drive north of Seabrook.

Year-Round Activities

Although Seabrook really shines in summer, it’s a year-round destination for families, near and far. In the fall, families can look forward to a Fall Festival and Halloween events, as well as outdoor activities like mushroom foraging and stargazing. Winter at Seabrook is mild, and it’s a great time to settle in at your beach house, watch storms, go fishing and search for glass floats hidden around the community. With spring comes Springfest and the razor clam season. It’s also an ideal time to hike, bike, kayak and watch for whales as they migrate north to Alaska.

Good to know: Seabrook launched a concierge service in 2021, so if you need dinner reservations, childcare services, or help booking appointments or tours locally, all you need to do is call or email.

7 Reasons a Camper Van Rental Should Be Your Next Family Adventure

With Memorial Day fast approaching, we know summer vacation is on everyone’s mind. For Seattle families it doesn’t get any better, or let’s face it easier, than heading to the coast to find miles of sandy beaches and the relaxation you crave after a busy school year. If you’re ready to trade the bustling city for a peaceful summer escape, Seabrook makes for an unbelievably easy family vacation, and not just because everything you need is only five minutes away (for real!). Read on for the inside scoop on this epic vacation spot.

Book Your Beach House

A row of bikes in front of cottages at Seabrook Wa

Finding that just-right beach cottage is the first step in planning a memorable family vacation to Seabrook. With so many rentals to choose from, narrowing it down to find exactly what your family needs is pretty easy to do. Seabrook’s got pet-friendly cottages, cottages with ocean views and cottages that sleep anywhere from two to twenty-plus people. Each one comes with different perks like hot tubs, gas grills, fire pits, toy closets and even baby gear (think high chairs or pack-n-plays) that make renting an oh-so-easy option for families. Plus, each rental has its own distinct personality, with cheeky names to match like "Tide Together,” “Hook, Wine and Sinker” and “Seas the Day.”

One of the best parts of renting a vacation home at Seabrook is that it can be your home away from home. The full (and usually well-stocked) kitchen allows families to bring food from home and cooking meals instead of eating out all the time. And if you forgot anything, or don’t feel like dragging an ice-laden cooler out to the coast, you can rely on the Front Street Market to fill in the gaps. They're open seven days a week, and have just about everything you need, including those baby wipes you forgot at home.

Tips for Choosing the Right Cottage

While you’re browsing Seabrook’s rental cottages, check floor plans and pictures carefully. Some cottages feature loft bedrooms, accessed by ladders, that might give pause to toddler parents, but would be awesome for grade schoolers. Finding your cabin on the property map is also a good idea. Based on what your kiddos love (think: the beach or playground vs. walking trails), you may want to be closer to one part of town than another. But when it really comes down to it, Seabrook‘s thoughtfully designed community means you’re really never more than five minutes from where you want to be.

Play at the Beach…

A family walks down to the beach at Seabrook, Wa

After you’ve booked the perfect cottage, it’s time to think about recreation. Seabrook’s big draw is definitely its expansive Pacific Ocean shoreline. It’s the pristine beach Seattle families long for (sorry, Golden Gardens and Alki), with soft sand that was made for sculpting sandcastles, digging moats and burying yourself …or at least your legs. It’s also where you’ll find plenty of wide-open space to fly a kite, kick a ball around, toss a Frisbee or even play beach volleyball. For many, it’s the place to give skimboarding a try. And in winter, you can dig up delicious razor clams; then bring them home for a big clambake dinner with the kids (psst… remember your license for this one).

However your family plans to spend they day at the beach, be sure you’ve got beach chairs, a blanket, a sunshade (it you’ve got it), plenty of sunscreen and provisions to keep the kids happy so they can keep playing. Both of the beach entrances involve a lot of stairs, so strollers and wagons are a no go. Instead, big beach bags and willing helpers is all you need to lug your gear back and forth from your nearby cottage.

… and Beyond

Kids ride bikes at Seabrook Wa

Get out and ride bikes

One thing you’ll notice at Seabrook is people out riding bikes—all the time and everywhere. It’s no surprise biking one of the top two ways to get around (walking is the other). The roads were specifically designed with safety in mind. Jump on a bike and head out to explore this charming community from your front door. We’re sure you’ll find unexpected treasures along the way. Although you never know what’s around the next corner, if we were to guess, we’d say bocce ball and shuffleboard courts, multi-use trails and hidden courtyards where families can stop to play games or build a fire on a cool night (hint: the outdoor fireplaces and pits make really good s’mores). Mount your bikes on the back of the car, or rent beach bikes from Bucks NW so you don’t have to schlep too much gear from home.

Insider tip: Seabrook has partnered with the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance to build some killer mountain bike trails around the property. If you want to introduce the kids to the sport, hit the DNR trails. You’ll find them off Narnia Trail that you can pick up in the Farm District.

A kid finds a fairy house along the trails of Seabrook wa

Take a family hike

A network of hiking trails winds through the town. While these trails will get you from here to there, depending on where you’re staying, they’re also fun to explore just because. Of all the hikes to take, our favorite is the gnome trail. You’ll find it mid- neighborhood, behind the stump treehouse (another place your kids will love). That glimpse of color you see in the forest is probably a fairy house. Once one catches your eye, you'll be hooked, and before you know it, you’ve wandered deep into the forest in search of the next gone home, fairy encampment or mushroom find. Truly a magical experience for kids, this trail is an easy one with so many hidden treasures to find.

Make a splash a the indoor pool

Because even in the summertime, we can’t count on sunny skies in the Pacific Northwest, Seabrook has an indoor pool and hot tub. It’s open for family swim from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The pool gets pretty busy on the weekends. Our suggestion: hit the pool in the morning, before the marine layer burns off. Then head to the beach in the afternoon when sun is more likely to show itself. Water play all day is definitely the way to go here.

Have fun near the Farm District

There’s a reason playgrounds are a parent's best friend. Not only do they get the kids outside, but if you’re lucky, an extra long play session will tire the kids out just in time for nap. Just beyond the playground is the Farm District. Follow the trail to the barn where you may spot horses (please don’t feed them or enter the barn) and will surely see chickens and ducks just outside. There’s a community garden here too. Residents grow everything from fruits and veggies to flowers in these plots that are open for you to explore.

Go on a Guided Tour

Two people kayak along the Copalis River near Seabrook Wa

When you’re ready to get out and explore, head to Buck’s NW in downtown Seabrook to find all the adventures. Born and raised on the Pacific Coast, Buck is a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about introducing families to the great outdoors. If you can think up an outdoor adventure, chances are Buck can guide you through it. The summer months are the perfect time to book a kayak tour. We recommend the Ghost Forest Tour down the Copalis River. It’s a two- to three-hour guided history lesson where you’ll learn about a devastating tsunami that hit the Pacific Coast in 1700, leaving these ghost trees in its wake. There is no minimum age for this guided trip—families can ride in tandem kayaks so kids of all ages can participate safely. Other guided experiences through Buck’s NW include hiking, biking, surfing (it’s a year-round sport here), fishing and SUP. Even if your family doesn’t need a lesson or a tour, Buck’s NW is a great place to rent what you need to adventure on.

Insider tip: Capture your Seabrook beach adventures with a Pink Fin Photography lifestyle family photo session.

Where to Grab a Bite at Seabrook

Kids eat at a restaurant at seabrook wa

Pretty much everyone in Seabrook heads to the Vista Bakeshop for their morning coffee and a bite for breakfast. It’s why you’ll usually find a short line out the door, or folks milling around waiting for their coffee order to come up. Pastries are the bakeshop’s specialty, and no matter what you order (sweet or savory) you won’t be disappointed.

When it comes to lunch and dinner, there area a few family-friendly spots in town to choose from. Koko’s Restaurant & Tequila Bar is where you’ll find modern Latin cuisine and epic ocean views. They offer indoor and outdoor dining options, and feature flavorful and fresh takes on Latin cuisine, with lots of GF, vegetarian and vegan dishes. Our tip? Order the Pablano-Cashew Enchiladas when you go. Frontager’s Pizza Co. is another option with total kid-appeal. It’s a serious pie house serving up gourmet, brick-oven, Northwest-style pizza, salads and Italian sodas. With indoor, outdoor and take-out options, it’s hard to go wrong here. You’ll find amazing chicken sandwiches at the Cookie’s Country Chicken food truck (open Thursdays through Saturdays), and the new Rising Tide Tavern, opened by two Canlis alums, serves up gourmet pub fare in Town Center.

A kid shows off candy from the Sweet Life in Seabrook Wa

Finish if all off with a treat from Sweet Life, the cutest little ice cream and candy shop you've ever seen. They make small batch, organic ice cream that holds its own against anything you’d find in the big city, and house an array of retro and familiar candy favorite as well as bean-to-bar chocolates (be sure to ask for the seafoam) and other too-sweet treats. If you’re thinking dessert with an ocean view, we’re right there with you.

Shop at Seabrook’s Town Center

Seabrook’s Town Center now has more shops than ever (with others on their way). Top on the list for families to check out is Brooklets Toys. Filled from floor to ceiling with top toy brands kids and parents love, it’s the place to go before you hit the beach—check out the ice cream cone sand toy set—or when you need a few new toys to keep the kids busy on the drive home (hint: the woodland fairy peel-and-stick booklet will keep the kids busy all the way to Olympia.). Right next door is Magnolia’s Clothing Boutique, a shop that understands moms want to be both stylish and comfy. Head in to find your next soft tee, cozy sweatshirt or great pair of jeans. When it comes to logo wear, Tides by Seabrook has what you need, whether it’s beanies, trucker hats or your new favorite hoodie.

For a New Spot Downtown: Playscape at The Battery

The Battery

This cutting-edge, eco-inspired play area opened in December of 2021, but expect spring 2022 to be huge here. Its extended hours for the warmer months (7 a.m. - 9 p.m.) began March 2. Triple the size of the previous playground space in The Battery, Playscape was constructed post-Hurricane Ida and is built to flood and recover. Children experience five ecology zones: Bluff with five granite slides; Riverbed and Marsh with vast salt-tolerant gardens, elevated tree houses, and sand/water play; and Dune and Meadow presenting ShowBox, the first improv/puppet theater in an NYC playground. Other features include a climbing wall, rope ladders and a sandbox with "animals" (like a concrete octopus) waiting to be discovered. (Reminder: you can't visit The Battery with kids without taking a spin on the magical Seaglass Carousel, and if it's hot out, don't miss the Spiral Bosque Fountain

To Beat the Heat On the West Side: Chelsea Waterside Playground

One of the newest playgrounds in the city (Domino Park and Pier 3 in Brooklyn also recently debuted) the Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Hudson River Park has always been a popular spot for locals and otherwise. A $34 million overhaul from architect Michael Van-Valkenburgh (his firm is behind the design of Brooklyn Bridge Park as well) brought playground equipment from Danish firm MONSTRUM to the northeast for the first time. Play structures include a giant, one-of-a-kind, multicolor Robina wood pipefish (found in the Hudson), and a 64-foot wooden slide. You'll also find sprinklers, a large sandpit, and limestone cattle head sculptures salvaged from an old building in the meatpacking district. After you’re done playing, hold hands and cross the West Side Highway to access a sprawling grassy field along the Hudson River. After you relax, go for a ride on the Pier 62 Carousel, featuring 33 hand-carved wooden animal figures, open daily for rides ($2 each).

Where: Chelsea, West 23rd St. and 11th Ave.

What’s in it for you: Lots of tree plantings for shade and shutting out city noise, and tiered granite seats made with material from Pier 54, where the Titanic was to have docked.

Water feature: Gentle sprinklers.

Restroom: There’s a Port-o-let in the playground for emergencies and a public restroom across the street on the north side of Chelsea Piers building.

To Splash and Slide: Heckscher Playground

Constructed in 1927, Heckscher Playground is the oldest playground in Central Park and the largest at 1.8 acres. It’s best known for its rock hills with ladders that lead down into tunnels, providing city kids with hours of exploration. Kids can also swing and slide in a shaded area, run and roll on a synthetic turf, and climb and splash in a large, maze-like climber and water feature with tunnels, ramps, and slides. There really is no shortage of things to do here. Plus, the playground is housed in a confined area — helpful for keeping your critters from darting into the Central Park Zoo.

Where: Columbus Circle, 7th Ave. and Central Park South from 61st to 63rd St.

What’s in it for you: Plenty of benches and green grass, lots of room to play.

Water feature: Water spews from the highest point of the climber and down to elevated water channels, plus there’s a separate semi-enclosed area for tots to splash.

Restroom: Located at the playground entrance inside the Heckscher Building

For an Upper West Side Institution: Safari, or "Hippo" Playground

Hippo Playground Project

Much-beloved by the community (and taken extra special care of, thanks to The Playground Project), Hippo Playground takes its name from the impossible-to-miss Bob Cassily hippopotamus statues found "frolicking" in the park. There's something for all ages here, including swings, a wood play structure, jungle gym, a slide, a soft play surface, sand pit, and spray fountain. There's also picnic tables, and shade, to keep everybody cool. In the summer, there's free art in the park, as well as a free July concert series. (Check The Project's Facebook page for the day's happenings.) Come fall, head to the park for pumpkin carving and a Halloween parade.

Note: Thanks to a renovation, the playground's Park House can now be booked as an affordable party space. Click here for booking inquiries.

The Playground Project also holds a boffo fundraiser every year (typically in the spring) with pony rides, a bounce house, petting zoo, face-painting, glitter tattoos, and much, much more.

Where: Riverside Park at 91st Street

What's in it for you: Shady spots, and picnic tables. Plus free programming in the summer. (Plus: a cool Joan of Arc statue at 93rd Street!)

Water feature: Yes—in the shape of a hippo, naturally

Restrooms: Yes, on site.

For Play for Big & Small Kids: Margaret L. Kempner Playground

A major renovation of the popular Margaret L. Kempner Playground was completed in late 2019. Improvements include new custom-built wooden play structures, a central water spray feature, an accessible sandbox feature and the addition of a picnic area. This playground is a great spot for families with a big and a little kid; it's designed to accommodate kids ages 2-5, and 5-12, with separate but connected play areas for the two groups. For example, older kids can be challenged with net-climbing, while younger ones can tackle spinners and balance features.

Where: Northeast side of the park at 94th. Enter at 96th Street.

What’s in it for you: Play for a wide range of ages, new plantings and a picnic area.

Water feature: Yes

Restroom: No.

For a Playground You Can Hit Coming Or Going: Evelyn's Playground

You'd be forgiven for thinking this is called "Union Square Playground", because it anchors Union Square Park on the north side. A good spot for kids of all ages, the park has climbing structures, slides, swings, a gentle water feature in warmer weather, a generous sandbox, and a big giant silver dome to scale. A great spot to play in the heart of the city, and steps from the Union Square subway lines, making it easy to get to, and leave. Bonus features of the park include statues of Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln, and a dog run.

Where: Union Square, Union Square West and E. 17th St.

What’s in it for you: The famed Union Square Greenmarket is a stone's throw away.

Water feature: Gentle sprinkler.

Restroom: Accessible restrooms are located on site. (There's also a Barnes and Noble across the street on 17th.)

Online: nycgovparks.org

For an Arty Afternoon: Tom Otterness Playground

Way on the west side in the 40s, sits a gentle giant waiting to be scaled and slid down. The Tom Otterness Playground sits between two apartment buildings and it features a massive play-sculpture by the artist who gives the spot its name. (If the towering metal man looks familiar, it's probably because Otterness' whimsical work, "Life Underground", featuring similar tiny beings and alligators emerging from manholes, inhabits the subway station at 14th Street and 8th Avenue.) Canine lovers will also enjoy the dog run nearby — although watch your step: not everyone cleans up after their four-legged friend.

Where: Midtown West, 630 W. 42nd St. between 11th and 12th Aves.

What’s in it for you: You'll find some shady spots to get a respite from the sun, and will probably think the play-sculpture is pretty cool, too.

Water feature: No.

Restroom: Again, no. It's really about the art here.

For a Triple Play: Washington Square Park

NYC Parks

It’s been called “a battleground for chess enthusiasts,” but Washington Square Park (home to the famous arch) is so much more than that. For starters, it’s gone through some major renovations, so if your kids love to climb, this is a must-visit. Washington Square Park actually contains three playgrounds. The first is a small kids' playground for newly-minted walkers (that also has an infant swingset). There's also a play space for older kids where they can dig in the sand, run amok, and go down slides. Surrounded by artificial turf mounds, Washington Square Park is perfect for good old-fashioned play like rolling down a hill. In addition, a new rope, spider-web-like obstacle course in the southwest corner of the park offers extra fun for city kiddies of all ages. Note: The playground features JennSwings, which are full-body positioning support swing, adding an extra touch of safety.

Where: Greenwich Village, 4th St. to Waverly Pl. and Macdougal St. to University Pl.

What’s in it for you: Musicians such as jazz bands and a piano man entertain at all corners of the park. And yes, there are chess players for your little Bobby or Barbara Fisher to watch or challenge.

Water feature: The “big kids” playground has a mini-arch that sprays a tunnel of water; kids also like to jump in and out of the big water fountain in the middle of the park.

Bathrooms: Comfort stations on site.

For an Updated Park With Two Granite Slides: Billy Johnson Park

Pioneering landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg designed the Billy Johnson Playground (in 1981!) to be a rustic, mini reflection of the surrounding area in Central Park, featuring stone walls, bridges, a small shelter and naturalistic plantings. The big draw here is the 45-foot granite slide built into the landscape; not only is it fun to slide down, it's also a bit of an adventure to scale the slight grade to the top.

The playground recently underwent a major renovation and upgrade, which not only made it safer and accessible for kids of all abilities, but added many new features. Additions include new swings, a sand table, and refreshed rustic structures and seating. The renovation also added a dozen user-activated water jets to the playground's amphitheater area.

A major new feature is a custom-designed net climber, made with climbable cables and nets on sloped embankments, with stairs, platforms, slides, and a rope bridge; designed for kids ages two to five, it will probably draw the attention of older kids, too. Keeping with the aesthetic theme of the playground, the structure's rustic timber posts are made from Douglas fir trees.

Where: Upper East Side, E. 67th and Fifth Ave.

What’s in it for you: A brand new playground, spots to sit, some shade, and lovely plantings. The slide is adult-friendly, too.

Water feature: Yes

Restroom: No.

To Make Like King Tut: Ancient Playground

Just north of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ancient Playground has a climbing pyramid, obelisk and sundial inspired by the museum’s collection of Egyptian Art. You’ll also find pyramid-shaped climbers with slides, and tunnels linked by concrete bridges to make older kids happy. Little ones like to explore an obelisk-shaped structure in the sandbox. Bucket, tire and strap swings will also get a squeal out of all ages.

Where: Upper East Side, East Side of Central Park at 85th St.

What’s in it for you: You’re right near the Met!

Water feature: Water runs from a central obelisk across two bridges and cascades like a mini-waterfall into an open area with water jets. A separate space for younger kids has spray nozzles set into a wall.

Restroom: Comfort station in the playground.

For Downtown Playtime: Nelson A. Rockefeller Park

BPCA

Nelson A. Rockefeller Park is best known as the large lawn at the north end of Battery Park where kids can run, tumble and play yard games with oodles of green space to spare. The park has a large playground that reopened in October of 2020 following a significant renovation, the last of upgrades to all four play spaces in Battery Park City. You'll find colorful climbing structures for older kids and plenty of sand, swings, and small slides for the toddlers and infants. There’s also a small kid-powered merry-go-round. All sports equipment, toys, books and games are available to rent for free, at the on site Park House — just bring a photo ID.

Where: North end of Battery Park City, west of River Terrace

What’s in it for you: Soft rubber turf protects the knees and legs. Plus, there are picnic tables and benches to unwind and have some snacks.

Water feature: There are small water fountains inside the playground to keep little ones cool, or you can drop by nearby Teardrop Park featuring a natural rock climbing wall, which takes you up to a long slide back down.

Restroom: Located at the northwest corner of the Solaire Building, across the street from the Park House.

For Fans of Secret Spots & a Fantastic Slide: Teardrop Park

The two-acre, sustainable Teardrop Park was designed by child development experts and it shows. The park's play elements are integrated into the awesome landscape, which allows children to interact with water, plants, rock, and sand. The shadier southern half of the park features a rock step-path that leads up to a long slide, two sand pits, “theatre steps”, and a water playground. A short tunnel connects the two areas, and paths criss-cross the site, providing elevated views within the park and beyond as well as connections across the park. It’s a hidden gem of a spot for those really looking to connect with nature and take a literal few steps out of the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Where: Warren Street; Battery Park

What’s in it for you: Its relaxing vibe. Plus it’s not your run-of-the-mill playground.

Water feature: Water sprouts from the ground in a special section of stacked rocks, creating kid-friendly sprinklers.

Restroom: Located at the northwest corner of the Solaire Building, across the street from the Park House

For the Toddler Set: Toll Family Playground

Central Park Conservancy

The Toll Family Playground is a prime spot for toddlers and preschool kids, offering a full selection of features for a wide variety of play. The hallmark of the playground is two small house structures, a nod to similar shelters from the playground's original 1936 design. (The playground was renovated in 2018.)You'll also find a smaller slide and play structure, swings, spinner and spring toys and an area for sand plays that's sized for smaller children.

Where: West side of Central Park at 84th Street, near Mariner's Gate 85th Street entrance

What’s in it for you: The playground is located at the base of Summit Rock, the highest point the the park and a popular point of interest.

Water feature: A low-key water feature provides gentle sprays.

Restroom: No

To Spark Creativity: Imagination Playground

Daniel Avila, NYC Parks

More than your standard swings and slides, Imagination Playground, designed by famed architect (and dad) David Rockwell, is a an interactive play space that prompts kids to engage in unstructured creative free play and make a play space of their own. Kids use sand, water and loose parts like giant foam blocks, mats, and fabric to engage in fantasy and cooperative play, as well as good old fashioned running around like nuts.
Where: The flagship Imagination Playground is located near South Street Seaport at Burling Slip (South St., Front St. and and John St.). Portable Imagination Playgrounds pop up in playgrounds around the city as well. (Check the Parks Department website for news on where they will be.)

What's in it for you: It's a pretty cool idea — and you'll probably want to play along!

Water feature: A separate water play area for hot weather fun is open during the summer at the Burling Slip locale.

Restroom: Public restrooms on site.

For a Waterwheel Near a LEGO Store: Madison Square Park

NYC Parks Department

Madison Square Park Playground is known as a smaller space with big fun. The playground features a jungle gym and appropriate play equipment for both tots and older kids. The highlight during the summer is when the 15-foot tall waterwheel and sprinklers are activated. Bonus: a LEGO store/experience is located a stone's throw away on 5th Avenue at 23rd Street.

Neighborhood: Flatiron

Where: Madison Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets

What's in It For You: Wifi hotspots, and Eataly is right across the street on Fifth Ave.

Water Feature: The aforementioned water wheel.

Restroom: No

For a Water Park with a Pirate Edge: Pier 51 Hudson River Park

Friends of River Park Trust

Ahoy, mateys! A neighborhood favorite with river views, Hudson River Park’s Pier 51 Playground is great for water lovers. At the heart of the playground is a wooden pirate ship. Brass animals, such as turtles and crabs, adorn the playground and the sand play area and fences explain Manhattan’s ecological history.
