The Pandora “Harry Potter” Collection Brings the Wizarding World to Your Wrist

The purpose of this article is to provide some insight of why choosing a lifest‌yle newborn session is the right choice for a modern mom. Early on in my photography career, I followed some of the traditional concepts for newborn shoots.  The traditional method involves setting babies in adorable poses with prop equipment (e.g., beanbags, baskets) and accessories (e.g., headbands, hats).  However, over the years, I have discovered my love for lifest‌yle sessions.  The lifest‌yle method is a much more organic approach to capturing a newborn in the first few weeks of his or her precious life.  Lifest‌yle photography is about capturing your new baby in a very natural and honest way and it’s about portraying the special connection between the parents and child. It is minimalistic in approach with main focus on shared moments between family members and the natural beauty of a newborn baby.

Home Is Where The Heart Is.

A family’s home is an ideal location for a newborn session. Parents and children alike feel more comfortable at home.  The added comfort allows the family to feel more at ease.  As a result, the family is more likely to exhibit the unique aspects of their relationship with one another, including a shared love and happiness.  The home is also where a family spends a majority of their time after the birth of their child, and thus, is an appropriate stage for capturing these early moments.  Finally, in choosing to select the home as the setting for the newborn session, the family has the opportunity to show off the baby’s nursery.  At home session provides a perfect chance for parents to implement their own st‌yle. Parents often decorate their child’s nursery with such love and care that it would be a shame not to preserve its memory.

Natural Beauty.

The goal of a lifest‌yle newborn session is to photograph the baby in natural poses.  We want to capture the baby as he or she naturally lays, sleeps, explores her/his environment visually and even sometimes flashes a smile. In so doing, we can preserve a memory that reflects the true personality and uniqueness of each child.  A real memory, as opposed to just another cute picture.  Another goal is to use items that are on hand and specific to the family photographed while still trying to keep the environment simple and organic. Such items may include the baby’s blanket, stuffed animal, the parent’s favorite outfit for him or her, or a favorite swaddle.  Sometimes, even a family pet that loves to lay next to the child may end up being a great addition to a picture.

Families, Families, Families.

Lifest‌yle photography sessions do not solely focus on close-ups of the newborn.  Rather, an equal portion of the shoot is dedicated to photographing the family’s interaction: the emotion and joy between the parents, the parents and child(ren), and sometimes, the extended family.  I adore catching that perfect moment when a new dad looks at his bundle of joy with pure love in his eyes or that smile only a mom can make when looking at her newborn. Those honest connections are impossible to recreate in the studio environment.

Just Relax.

Unlike more traditional newborn sessions, lifest‌yle sessions are much more relaxed.  We don’t adhere to a strict timeline or design.  We go with the flow and let the child lead, relieving the stress normally attributed to traditional shoots.  When the baby sleeps, I have the opportunity to capture his or her natural un-posed beauty.  When the baby is awake, I can capture the parents cuddling or playing with him or her.  The relaxed environment helps the parents, who are already dealing with a great deal of stress, and also helps prevent the baby from getting upset. Baby doesn’t need to “perform” in any sort of way and parents get to enjoy all the moments as they naturally occur.

Timeless.

Traditional methods of posing or dressing a baby often follow popular st‌yles for the given period.  The problem is that such poses, props or outfits go out of st‌yle in time.  What might be popular today may look out-of-date when you later flip through your photo album.  A lifest‌yle session avoids the risk and temptation of temporary fads.  Instead, we capture the true and unique qualities of your newborn, family, and home.  These memories will never go out of st‌yle.

Emotional Storytelling

Lifest‌yle newborn session is not just about taking beautiful photos, it is about creating a story, a story that is specific only to the family photographed. The first moments when new life is brought into a home is the happiest of times. Parents are filled with emotions of love and joy. New experiences are created and shared. A lifest‌yle newborn session documents these special moments and at the same time conveys in the most authentic way a beautiful story of one’s life.

Hello! My name is Bojana. I am a lifest‌yle photographer located in the San Francisco Bay Area. I specialize in newborn, maternity, child and family photography.  I use only natural light to create real and beautiful imagery that represents your life in the most honest way.

Forget the x-box. Everyone knows that a kid’s favorite game is the one he plays with his Mummy. This spooky season, throw some thrills into playtime with mummy-themed science experiments, story times and games that will rattle their bones. Check out the details below, because we’re certain you’ll like how we roll.

photo: S. Massey

Wrap the Mummy
We love this game by Teach Preschool for our littlest goblins, especially when they try to wrap themselves. But before the frustration levels reach an all-time high, be sure to take the roll in your own hands to finish the job. And stand back, because nothing’s more fun for kids than breaking out of that mummy costume!

Mummify an Apple
Calling all Egyptians! The Great Apple Pharaoh has died and it’s time to mummify his body using nothing but salt, baking soda, an apple and some time. This project will take a little carving skills on a peeled apple, but the patience gives great results. Pop over to Time Traveller Kids for the play-by-play and instructions.

Mummy Race
Watch your kids morph into competitive mummies (aka Tiger Mummies) as they try to make it to the finish line without losing the beanbags on the backs of their outstretched arms. Feel like getting crafty? Find instructions for making your own spooky beanbags for the game, along with other inspiration, on Craftaholics Anonymous.

Shaving Cream Balloon Mummies
We love the idea of shaving cream filled balloons by Totally the Bomb, and think that it would be perfect for playing a round of Don’t Let the Mummy Hit the Floor. Just transform the white balloon into a mummy pre-game by glueing a few strips of toilet paper and googly eyes to it!

You’re no longer pregnant or nursing, and let’s face it—you’re craving a beer. Sitting alongside adults, sipping a frothy, hoppy, delicious treat on a Friday night. We hear you. Good news! There’s a brewery on the Eastside where you can imbibe on a craft beer and bring the littles along for the ride. Read on for the inside scoop on Flycaster Brewing Co.

photo: Amanda Chenoweth for Flycaster Brewery

Bridging the Fly Fishing & Beer Drinking Worlds
Celebrating their one year anniversary this May, Flycaster is the brainchild of Jeremy (and Tara) Eubanks. Combining his love of fly fishing and well, beer, Eubanks has put his heart and soul into crafting great micro-beer and creating a comfortable environment for all who enter. With wood walls and a stone bar, the brewery has a woodsy lodge vibe. But don’t worry. You won’t find a large moose head on the wall. Just a great hangout where you can get current fishing conditions on the local rivers and a tasty American-style beer by the fire.

photo: Amanda Chenoweth for Flycaster Brewery

The 411on the Brew
Flycaster offers hand-crafted, small batch beer focusing on a constantly rotating selection of Northwest styles. From a light body Bonefish Blonde and a crisp and hoppy Rocky Ford IPA, to a clear and crisp Hopper Pale Ale and an Amber body Yakima River Red—there’s a beer on the menu to fit everyone’s taste and fishing style. However, don’t expect to find any funky flavors here. Just the kind of brew Eubanks and other fishermen (and fisherwomen) would want to enjoy while catching the big one on the river.

Flycaster sources its hops from Yakima, but that’s not the only secret behind its great tasting brew. According to Eubanks, it’s his head brewer Jonathan Hughes. “Jonathon is a rockstar! He continues to evolve our beers based on customer feedback and the styles that we want to brew,” says Eubanks. So next time you’re at Flycaster, be sure to leave a comment (or two!). You might just see your recommendations on the menu.

photo: Flycaster Brewing Company Facebook page

Fun for the Kids
While no brewery is an all-out kid zone, Flycaster has a beanbag toss in the back room, along with possibly the best (free) pub mix ever, plus ample seating, a cozy fireplace and TVs, of course. No food is served on-site, but there’s generally a food truck right outside serving its finest. Even better news, Flycaster is dog-friendly, so your four-legged “kids” can join in the fun too.

photo: Steve Todd

On the Horizon
Eubanks hopes to grow his brew system, so he can start selling kegs locally. “We would like to continue with our core brews and continue to come up with seasonal beers and new fun beers,” says Eubanks. Be sure to look for Flycaster at local festivals like the Washington Brewers Festival taking place over Fathers Day Weekend along with festivals in Fremont and Bothell and Oktoberfest Kirkland in September.

Good to Know
Planning a party? The brewery offers a private event space and features live music from local up-and-comers.

Some things are just cool—alfresco dining, live music, adventurous chefs and James Franco. Luckily for us, we can find all of these things at the Atlanta Food Truck Park and Market (except Franco, unless he’s in town filming a movie, in which case we just know he’d hang out here). And, we can take our kids! Here’s what you should know before you go with your little ones in tow.

The Dish
The line up changes daily, but you can count on anywhere from six to ten food trucks on any given day except Mondays, when the park is closed. Go to their Facebook page daily to find out who’s serving up lunch and dinner, or follow them on Twitter. The lineup changes, but the most likely trucks to be found at the AFTPM on any given day include: Masala Fresh, Mighty Meatballs, Dogs on Wheels, Yum Yum Cupcakes, The Filipino, Atlanta Burger Truck, Tex’s Taco, and Chay J’s.

Run, don’t walk, to the Masala Fresh truck to try the chicken pita. Your toddlers will love it with the tangy tamarin sauce, made with raisins, dates, and brown sugar. It’s good enough to wake the baby up from her nap early just to beat the crowd. Other kiddo crowd-pleasers to consider are the collard green quesadillas at the Blaxican, the chicken parmesan meatball sliders at Mighty Meatballs, f.i.a.h.’s macaroni hot dog and the sweet plantains at Yoli’s.

The Deal
On Saturdays and Sundays, the food trucks share the stage with The Market at Howell Mill, a dynamic roundup of farm fresh, local, gourmet, and artisanal products from around north Georgia. Let your little ones peruse the offerings of handmade pound cakes, soap, meat, and produce as their King of Pops drips it’s way to their elbows.

You’ll find live music from various crowd-pleasing performers on the stage near the picnic tables most weekends during the summer, Cornhole game boards (a beanbag toss game, for the uninitiated), and a green space which is home to a small but satisfactory swing set, picnic tables, and bocce ball court. Bring your own cooler, chairs, and picnic blanket to make the most of the grassy area behind the stage, and you’ll get the music without the crowd. Be sure to check the website to find out if any events are planned for when you’re going.

The Dirt
So we’re cool, but we’re still moms. The down side of an afternoon or evening spent at the AFTPM is that there is no good solution for washing hands and going to the potty when you’re basically having a picnic with the city. Yes, there is a port a potty, and yes, there is a mobile hand washing station, but neither are really up to snuff. Don’t panic, just be sure the kids take care of business before you head to the park, take hand sanitizer, and make sure you’ve got wipes. Worst case scenario? You can walk next door to the gas station, buy a bottle of water, and use their restrooms.

Just when you thought Gangnam Style was beginning to die off, another equally viral dance video crazy is sweeping the internet, this time in the form of crazy shaking. We’re talking about the Harlem Shake, and unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you know all about this internet video fad that’s struck just about everyone from corporate offices to SeaWorld Animals. The videos all start off with a single dancer wearing a headpiece (a helmet, mask, funny hat, whatever you have on hand, really) and when the beat drops, a bunch of people dance like mad for about 15 seconds. With all this hype it was only a matter of time before kids wanted to get in on the action. That’s why we’ve rounded up some choice Harlem Shake videos that feature some very excitable kids showcasing their very best crazy dance skills. Eat your heart out, Psy.

1. Harlem Shake-kwondo
Taekwondo. Discipline. Focus. Dancing. Well it sure takes a lot of practice to get those moves down in the first 15 seconds of the video…the second half, we’re not so sure. While their dance moves might not earn them any points in a match, they sure do earn major style points in our book.

2. Father-Son Shake
We love when parents don’t take themselves seriously, especially when it comes to acting silly with their kids. This father-son duo is a perfect example of a dad who’s not afraid to show both his serious side and his crazy side. You can see the joy in his son’s face when they get to dance around in their costumes in the living room. Just check out the dog in the corner giving these two that “What are you people doing?” look. One thing’s for sure: no matter what the age, boys will be boys.

3. The Honda Shake
And then there are the parents that act a little too silly, as is the case in this video, where the little guy dancing in the front seat doesn’t quite know how to react to the crazy adults dancing next to him. He gets over it quickly enough, and the dance party continues, complete with styrofoam peanut confetti.

4. Harlem Shake: Family Edition
Who said that dads and kids get to have all the fun? Here’s one mama who’s holding it down for the ladies, starting off this Harlem Shake video with her own super cool dance moves, right before she trips over the beanbag chair in the middle of the room (been there, done that). Luckily, the beat drops and the living room is transformed into a colorful mess of toys. By the looks of it, the parents are having way more fun than the kiddos…perhaps a little too much fun. Hilarious nonetheless.

5. The Harlem Skate
There’s just something funny about watching kids try and dance while keep their balance on roller skates. Just watch as the kid in the gray shirt gets more and more into his dancing before he starts that all-too-familiar arm-flailing attempt to keep from falling over. We dare you not to laugh when he starts to take a tumble. He’s not alone however, as he’s joined by a mess of stumbling kids who have a harder time staying upright than a drunk college student.

6. Harlem Shake Son
Talk about stealing the show. This kid has got some moves, and we mean it! Just check out his outfit. And that wink to the camera? C’mon. With his female dance partners holding down the couch-stages behind him, this little guy could very well be the next dance sensation of the internet. Or at least his household.
