Favorite restaurant to take the kids: After a day of sailing or windsurfing, we love relaxing at The Bistro at Shoreline Lake

Favorite thing about raising kids in the Bay Area: I love that the weather is fantastic year-round which allows for even more time to spend outdoors. Drizzling rain (when it happens!), you have nothing on two feet of snow!

Most unique thing you’ve done with kids locally: Hiked to Alamere Falls in Bonita near Point Reyes. It is unique in that it empties directly into the ocean and is one of only two waterfalls of its kind on the West coast—the other being McWay Falls in Big Sur.

There are many things IKEA is known for: DIY furniture, nearly unpronounceable product names and of course, those delicious Swedish meatballs and uber cheap $1 hot dogs. But what if you’re a vegetarian or your kiddo just can’t stand meat? Well now you’re in luck, because IKEA veggie hot dogs are finally here!

The IKEA Bistro now features a totally vegetarian hot dog. So what’s in these not-so-meaty dogs? Even though they may look sort of like the real deal, IKEA’s veggie take on the classic includes red lentils, kale, ginger and carrots. Yum!

Not only are these dogs good for you, they’re also good for the environment. And if you’re wondering what a hot dog has to do with the environment, IKEA notes that its sustainable veggie dogs have a greenhouse gas emission that’s seven times less than a regular ol’ hot dog. Now that’s some food for thought.

According to Micheal La Cour, Managing Director at IKEA Food Services AB, “We are facing many challenges in the food production industry today and one of those challenges is that we need to be more sustainable. With the global reach that we have at IKEA we believe that we have a responsibility and a great opportunity to serve food that is good for the planet.” La Cour adds, “But of course there is no point in creating a more sustainable food options if it is not delicious and that is why we are extremely proud of the new veggie hotdog.”

If you’re into veggie dogs, you may also want to check out IKEA’s Veggie Balls. They look just like their famed Swedish meatballs counterparts, but instead of meat, these treats are all carrots, chickpeas, bell peppers, kale and corn. Now that sound delish.

Where to Stay

The Sideways Inn
This hotel is literally the first thing you see when you get off the freeway in Buellton—mostly because it’s hard to miss the towering windmill turned reception area. The whole place has been remodeled and it’s evident they had families in mind when they re-designed. The ground floor rooms open up to a common courtyard with a view of the pool and spa area which makes these rooms feel more spacious than their upper-level rooms. It also gives the grown-ups a nearby place to escape to enjoy a glass of wine at night or a cup of coffee in the morning. Speaking of mornings, make sure to take advantage of the free continental breakfast, it includes those yummy Danish pastries that the area is known for.

The kids can walk around the property on spacious paths that are landscaped with drought-tolerant native California plants. In the evening, grab a s’mores kit from the lobby and roast the dessert over one of the many fire pits that are turned on right at dusk. Bonus: You can also use all the amenities of the Flying Flags RV Resort and Campground that is located next to the hotel. More on that below!

Fun fact: Take a look at the photos in your room. They are on loan from the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society. Instant history lesson!

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground
This overnight option is not your average RV Park. It’s more like a choose-your-own-adventure kind of stay where you can pick from a variety of lodgings like vintage Airstream trailers, themed cottages and cabins, lodges, yurts and tents. The latter two are the ultimate in glamping with air condition and heating and outdoor cooking stations. All guests receive full access to the on-site deli, convenience store, snack bar, shower facilities and laundry. Yes, this place has it all. Our vote is for the safari tents. It’s a unique experience that will have your family feeling like they’re on a wild adventure except with all the comforts of home.

Ready to play? There are two, year-round heated pools, a splash pad and park (that has a jungle gym your little monkeys will love). Bringing Fido? This place also has its own off-leash dog park.

Where to Eat

The Hitching Post II
This restaurant is a meat lover’s paradise and is a must when you stay in Buellton. It’s more than just dinner—it’s an experience. From the welcoming hosts to the welcomed menu alterations for picky eaters, it’s a raucous spot so a few fussy (or overly excited) kids won’t faze anyone. The menu is simple: pick your protein and sides and then sit back and wait to be served an amazing meal. The kids’ menu is the same just smaller portions. Tiny diners will love the unlimited baskets of fresh garlic bread and trays of tangy pickles, olives and carrot sticks that are brought to the table throughout the meal. Save room for dessert though! For some pre-meal entertainment, take the kids to watch the pit masters expertly man the grills as a roaring oak fire sears the food to perfection. Who’s hungry?

Bottlest Winery Bar & Bistro
Who says you can’t enjoy a taste of nearby wine country while you have the kidlets in tow. Bottlest Winery Bar and Bistro will give you the best of both worlds—a family-friendly atmosphere and a wide selection of wines. They have “halfy-hour” from 3-6 p.m. (perfectly timed for those painfully early kid dinners) and over 50 wines by the glass to choose from. There is a limited kids menu but don’t be afraid to ask for what you want because they are willing to make it. Buttered pasta? Sure. Cheese pizza. You bet. The adult menu changes seasonally. Cheers!

Patti Bakes
If you’re looking for something fast and easy, Patti Bakes is your best bet. Follow the smell of freshly baked bread and you’ll find one of the best sandwich shops in town. Every day they serve up soups, sandwiches, scones, muffins, salads and more. One warning: Once they sell out, they sell out. If you are dead set on checking out their cinnamon cranberry bread, come early, and come hungry. Some family favorites include the breakfast panini with eggs and bacon and the made-from-scratch soups.

Pro Tip: They are only open until noon on the weekends so plan ahead if you’re thinking of picking up accoutrements for a picnic.

What to Do

The Mendenhall Museum
The Mendenhall Museum is like the movie Cars come to life, all the neon lights reminded us of downtown Radiator Springs, and your kids will love it. It has one of the biggest collections of car-related antiques on the west coast including signs, classic cars and racing memorabilia. It’s a must for the car-obsessed kids. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re bound to see something new around every corner. Favorites included the gas pumps from the 1950s and the collection of license plates and bumper stickers from around the US. The owner has been known to start up any of the cars on the lot so get ready to hear the vroom of a 1950s Mustang!

OstrichLand USA
It’s not every day that you get up close and personal with the world’s largest bird. Buy a pan of food for $1 and walk out into the park to feed the fowl. Don’t worry, these guys are safely kept behind sturdy fences and you feed them through slots along the enclosure. Once you’ve had your fill of ostrich fun, head further into the park to visit the emus—the ostrich’s distant cousin. You’ll soon see why some kids call these guys modern day dinos. Don’t forget to spend some time in the gift shop for some kitschy ostrich fun before you leave. And if you’re feeling especially daring, you can buy ostrich jerky to snack on later.

River View Park & Botanic Garden
When it’s time for kids to just be kids, head to River View Park and Botanic Gardens for scenic views of the Santa Ynez Valley, plus miles and miles of open land. There’s also a huge playground where the kids can run and climb America Ninja Warrior style. Follow the path from the playground to the Botanical Gardens where informational signage will guide you through a mix of interesting native plants and Chumash Indian artifact recreations.

Worth the Drive

Zaca Mesa Winery
This place proves that there is such a thing as a kid-friendly winery, so much so, the staff practically welcomes you and your brood with open arms. Whether you snag a spot in the cozy tasting room or wander around outside, it’s a good time for everyone. And, depending on the time of year, they just might let you and your kids into the vineyard to try a few grapes right off the vine. Don’t miss the gigantic outdoor chess set with pawns, kings and queens that might be the same height as your tots. There are loads of picnic tables and outside food is totally okay but if you forgot to bring your own snacks, there are tons of munchies inside for sale.

No sitter, no problem!  The romance is in full force, even when you bring the kids along at these restaurants that manage to have spectacular vistas, twinkling lights, or plush dark booths as well as fabulous food for big and little people alike. And they’re located everywhere from Silverlake to Manhattan Beach and Hollywood to Topanga. Pick a spot and bring date night back, any night.

Little Beast
A romantic spot that has also earned a place on our list of the “Best Kids Menus in Town”? Be still our foodie hearts. Get a table on the twinkling patio of this cozy craftsman and sip a glass of carefully selected wine while you peruse the menu. The American bistro-style food for the parents is upscale and simultaneously inventive and rustic (duck liver mousse with port gelee, blueberries and sherry gastrique or pan roasted steelhead trout) while the kids options are simple, healthy and appealing, like a roast chicken, quesadilla with broccoli, or Little Beast Jr. Burger and fries. You’ll all want to be sure to start with everyone sharing the addictive edamame hummus, and end with the Belgian chocolate pudding (you might need a few of these, as you won’t want to share).

Speranza
This tucked away spot on Hyperion in Silverlake is hard to stumble across; it has no sign or website. But once you find it, you’ll be a regular. The restaurant is mostly the patio, filled with plants, heat lamps & blanket to keep you toasty when it’s chilly and candles. It feels tucked away and transports you to another world, one filled with fantastic hand made pasta (kids love the fresh squid ink pasta that turns teeth black!) and risotto, fresh salads and a smattering of desserts. Be sure to arrive early to secure a table and settle in for a cozy evening.

Inn of the Seventh Ray
A fairytale setting just a short drive from Santa Monica city lights, Inn of the Seventh Ray is a peaceful oasis with naturally built-in entertainment. Nestled in tranquil Topanga Canyon, the magical woodland setting seems ripped from the pages of a storybook. Request a creekside table so you can kick back while the kids remain in sight exploring the nearby stream bed for a family brunch, or dig into a dinner under twinkling lights. How’s this for romance: chances are better than even that you’ll get to see a wedding! Gourmet preparations of organically sourced veggie, vegan and raw dishes appeal to all taste buds and kid-friendly simple preparations are no problem.

Saladang
A hop, skip and jump from Old Town Pasadena, Saladang (and sister restaurant Saladang Song, next door) delights Thai food lovers with modern interpretations of traditional dishes. Slip into its open, airy dining space for oodles of noodles—legitimate reasons for the kids to play with their food—as well as spicy curries (for grown-ups) and fried delicacies begging for refreshingly sugary Thai iced tea. Even the garnishes evoke romance: fruits and vegetables carved into miniature birds and swans. An eclectic selection of beer and wine entices you to linger, allowing time to try one of their signature desserts, including sweet sticky rice and crowd-pleasing homemade coconut ice cream.

Taix
If old school charm rings your bells, this is the spot. This French restaurant in the middle of Echo Park has been here since 1927, and you sense the history instantly. It feels like the Rat Pack could take the stage at any moment. The interior is dark and quiet, the booths deep and comfy, and the food retro, classic and delicious. If steak au poivre and escargot aren’t on your kid’s list of acceptable foods, fear not: there are hearty burgers and fries on the grown up menu, and a menu for kids that includes chicken and veggies, spaghetti or mac & cheese, and to seal the retro deal, kid meals come with soup or salad and sherbert.

Tin Roof Bistro
This lively Manhattan Beach eatery brings wine country cuisine to the South Bay. Arrive before 6 p.m. to enjoy Bocce Hour on the patio, where grownups can sample libations for less, salads and artisanal woodfire pizzas while the kids learn the fine points of Italian bowling. Keep the vino flowing from their Napa Valley list while sharing farm-fresh sides and family-friendly nightly features like fried chicken, porterhouse steak and whole fish. Pint-sized palates will be pleased to find faves such as burgers and pasta. Romance is allowed to flourish when little ones are otherwise occupied…

The Water Grill, Santa Monica
Across the street from the Santa Monica Pier, you can savor the same stunning views, minus the crowds. Large roll-up-door windows carry in sea air, inviting beach babes to grab a perch to watch the spectacular sunsets. While they wait, little ones will be enchanted by various fish tanks, doing dual duty as decor and appetite enticers. Grownups in want of an aphrodisiac will be well-served by the selection of freshly-caught oysters, while the kids settle into tufted leather booths to get acquainted with hand cut fries, steamed edamame and homemade gooey mac n’ cheese. The entire family can partake of a whole fish from the daily catch and top it off with a shared bowl of homemade ice cream and be well away before the evening crowds arrive. (Because the real romance takes place later at home, and you need to get the kids tucked in early!)

Yamashiro
The steep hillside road leading to this iconic Japanese restaurant is reminiscent of an amusement park ride. Steeped in old Hollywood history, the storied site delights all ages with ornate pagodas, a cascading waterfall and indoor garden, not to mention a breathtaking top-of-the-world view. Now over 100 years old, Yamashiro’s heritage is alive and well in the updated menu, mixing Mai Tais that bring you straight to the tropics and spicy sushi rolls with kid-pleasing finger foods including crispy chicken, Asian BBQ ribs and plain veggie rolls. The spring season brings the return of the outdoor Pagoda Bar. Reserve ahead to avoid long waits and weekend disappointments.

—Story by the fun folks at NPN (Neighborhood Parents Network)

Neighborhood Parents Network (NPN) has been connecting a diverse community of families with the resources they need to navigate parenting in the city for 35 years! NPN is essential for all expecting, new and seasoned parents.

We’ve all heard the amazing stories about Rose’s Luxury and how worth the wait it is, but to a hangry munchkin, any extra minute away from food is akin to torture. So if you’re keen to check out Barrack’s Row without a hangry meltdown, we’ve rounded up the most satisfying spots for all cravings: brunch, sweet tooth, dinner plate and more. Read on for some palate pleasing and kid-friendly eateries.

Medium Rare
Medium Rare might be one of the hottest new spots for xenophiles to indulge their love of steak frites, but it’s also a super fun brunch place. Especially for your sidewalk chalk loving kiddos – and it won’t break the bank. Their prix-fixe menu features a bottomless brunch (think mimosas, bloody marys, coffee, OJ) so ask for a seat in the back near the gigantic chalk board and you can munch in peace while the kids exhibit their inner Kurt Wenner (America’s premier sidewalk chalk artist). Our mini taste tester devoured her French Toast, while our partner in crime raved about his steak frites. Win win all around.

Zest Bistro
If the fam has made a commitment to green living this year, and they love to try new food, then Zest might just become your fav neighborhood spot. Not only are the tables made from reclaimed wood, but the flooring is bamboo, the paint non-toxic and the heating and plumbing are energy efficient. So you can enjoy the pickled Broccolini and Soy Ginger Salmon at tables that could tell quite a story if only they could talk. Kiddos who aren’t quite ready to share your kale salad can grab some traditional noodles and nuggets to keep their bellies from rumbling.

District Doughnut
I hate donuts said… no kid ever. Hit up District Doughnut and fill their little bellies with tasty flavors like Brown Butter (this put District Doughnuts on the map!), Blueberry Almond Cream, Cookies and Cream, and Snickerdoodle. There’s not much to the shop except the tantalizing aromas of fried dough, puffs of powdered sugar and the happy silence of kids whose mouths are filled to the brim with chocolate covered crispy, gooey deliciousness. Naturally, we can’t wait to go back.

For the hotdog loving kiddo, head to DC-3 and become the world’s coolest parent.  With toppings like Cheese Whiz, Neon Chicago Relish, Cincinnati Chili and Sport Peppers, the little ones will get a frankfurter like they’ve never had before. And love it. The vegetarian crowds can order a veggie dog and get all the fixins. After they’ve chowed down on their dog, kids (and parents!) can get a soft serve ice cream cone with free toppings. And those of us that have a thing for deep fried Oreos – no longer will we have to wait till the county fair stops by town. Fried Oreos are on the menu – and delish!

The Sweet Lobby
Cupcake and macaroon lovers rejoice! Now you can satisfy your kiddo’s sweet tooth and indulge in the crispy deliciousness of a macaroon at the same time. The Sweet Lobby’s Mac Top features a delectable cupcake topped with frosting and a macaroon. Be still our beating hearts. We tried to share this with our miniature cupcake lover, but were rebuffed. So we just ordered our own – that’s how tasty this little gem is. We also shared a cup of their famous European Hot Chocolate, which our tiny date remarked was “the best thing ever.”
