From the moment you find out you’re pregnant, many moms-to-be start to notice changes in their bodies. Morning sickness, thicker hair, even varicose veins are among the list of culprits that can show up and disappear. But what if they don’t? It turns out, your baby isn’t the only thing you’ll get from those nine grueling months—there are lots of body changes after pregnancy, too. These not-so-cuddly gifts may stick around long after your baby bump goes away. From wider hips to bigger feet, vision changes to sudden (or disappearing) allergies, many new moms will find these changes are part of their postpartum body.

Your Feet Grow

Your baby’s not the only one who's going to need new shoes. Many new moms add half a shoe size—or more—after pregnancy. Blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the ligaments in your body to help prepare for birth (that pelvis has to widen, after all), which also causes the bones to spread in the feet.

Doctors say there is a chance your feet will go back to their old size after several months, but if your feet still feel cramped in your favorite shoes, it may be time to go shopping (as if you needed a better excuse).

Note: Call your doctor if your feet have swelled up suddenly, as this may be a sign of potentially dangerous preeclampsia or blood pressure changes.

Your Hips Get Wider

You know those glorious hips that widened to let your baby squeeze out into the world? They may never go back to the way they were (even if you had a C-section). Same goes for your rib cage, which also had to open up to make room for your growing child. For most women, these enlarged bones go back to their original place by about 18 weeks postpartum, but some women keep the extra girth permanently.

"My hips stayed permanently wider which was great for me because I had no shape before," said a Reddit user. "I was built like a teenaged boy, lol."

"My hips? Wider yes and not back to normal," said another mom. "But I have embraced it and now have a more hourglass figure with larger bust, slim waist and wide hips." 

"I hope my hips get wider during pregnancy. Wide hips are beauty beautiful," said another.

Your Breasts Shrink

While pregnancy’s powerful hormones will likely bump your bosom up a few cup sizes, once your milk-making machines dry up, you may end up with smaller breasts than you had before you were pregnant. “You lose a lot of breast elasticity,” Los Angeles–based OB-GYN Pari Ghodsi told Health magazine. “They’re not as full as they once were.”

That said, some women report larger breasts after pregnancy (even after nursing), so it's anyone's guess where your post-baby bust will be.

I was a C pre-pregnancy, was a DD in my second trimester," said a Reddit user. "I never measured postpartum but they were pornographic while I was pumping, and then once I stopped pumping they vanished into thin air and I’ve got A’s now."

“After nursing 6+ years with four kids, they didn't shrink......just deflated,” said another. “I can go out braless bc I can tuck them into my damn waistband.”

"Once my son was eating adult food they went back down to one cup size larger than they were pre-pregnancy," said another.

Your Hair Changes Color, Curl, or Texture

Pregnancy packs a wallop on your hormones, with these changes wreaking havoc on your body all the way to the tips of your strands. Some steadfastly straight-haired mamas get suddenly wavy locks post-baby, while some women with curls may suddenly go straight. (And this is in addition to losing the lustrous hair you likely grew while your baby was cooking.)

Sometimes, the hair goes back to the way it was months later; some women have changed tresses forever. Whatever your look, embrace it as your new mom style.

"I'm Asian and had thick, pin-straight hair before pregnancy,” said one mom on Reddit. “After I gave birth, it went all frizzy/weird, curly but not actually curly; beachy waves, but not nice beachy waves. Like an insane lion that had a bomb go off next to his head.”

“Got my first grey eyebrow hair 7 months along,” said another mom. “Hair is def not the same.”

“My wife was blonde her entire life, and is now a brunette after giving birth to our son,” said another Reddit user. “It’s crazy!”

Your Periods Change

As if you didn’t endure enough down there, postpartum periods tend to be permanently heavier or more painful after pregnancy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, these changes may relate to a larger uterine cavity causing more endometrium (mucous lining the uterus) to shed.

But it’s not all bad news. Some women actually experience lighter, easier periods after childbirth.

“The bottom line is that periods can change after having a baby,” OB-GYN Diane Young said in this article. “If you are concerned about your periods, make an appointment with your OB-GYN. There are medical therapies to help.”

That Dark Line that Points to Your Nether-Regions May Not Go Away

Pregnancy doesn’t just change your shape; it also changes your skin. Take the linea nigra: It’s the dark line that appears during pregnancy and runs from the middle of your belly to your pubic bone. A common hyperpigmentation that develops mid-pregnancy, it usually fades about three months after childbirth, but it can stick around permanently (as can darkened areolas, which also happens during pregnancy).

If the line bothers you, talk to your doctor. While it can’t be removed completely, there are skin-lightening creams and laser treatments that could make it less noticeable.

Your Allergies Disappear… or You Suddenly Have New Ones

Do you suddenly have a perpetually runny nose? Did your lifelong allergy to celery suddenly cease? Hormones are to blame for that, too. In fact, pregnancy can cause all sorts of changes in your immune system, which can alter your sensitivity to allergens. Experts say the most common newly occurring post-pregnancy allergies include seasonal allergies, food sensitivities, and PUPPP rash, a skin condition characterized by small pink itchy bumps on the abdomen. 

"Hormonal fluctuations impact your allergies because estrogen and progesterone have an impact on your mast cells (allergy cells)," allergist and immunologist Purvi Parikh of the Allergy and Asthma Network said in this Parents magazine article. 

Pregnancy isn’t the only dramatic hormonal shift that can trigger allergies, he added. “New allergies can emerge during periods of significant hormonal shifts, including puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause.”  

You Have Stretch Marks…in Places You Never Thought You Would

Stretch marks on the belly are a veritable right of passage into mommyhood. But stretch marks on the thighs? Breasts? Buttox? Sorry, but it’s a thing. Stretch marks—which appear as red, pink, or black lines (their color depends on your skin)—are actually small scars that happen when sudden weight gain  (i.e. your little miracle) tears the fibers of the skin. Up to 90 percent of pregnant women get them, with most common areas affected being the belly, thighs, hips, butt, and breasts. They can even happen in the upper arms and back.

And while you can’t get rid of (or prevent) stretch marks completely, most fade significantly after several months. In addition, there are some treatments—including chemical peels, lasers, radiofrequency, microdermabrasion, and microneedling— that may make them less noticeable.

My stretch marks are all over my legs!” said one Reddit user on this thread. “Nobody talks about this...my calves, thighs and hips got ‘em for sure. Interesting how everybody’s different.”

“I got zero stretchmarks until after I gave birth,” said another. “And then suddenly they were everywhere! Even behind my knees, under my arms, and on my pubic bone!”

Your Pelvic Floor Muscles Weaken

Sorry, but sneezing may never be the same. The strain of pregnancy and childbirth can weaken your pelvic floor muscles (those are the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowel). This can cause mild to severe urinary incontinence or other pelvic floor disorders including problems related to your bowel or sexual functioning.

The good news? There are exercises you can do to improve things, with daily Kegels being your best first step. If you’re noticing excessive leaking—more than just a little squirt with a sneeze or “Oops” on the trampoline—you may want to talk to your gynecologist about regular physical therapy to improve symptoms (Don’t worry; it’s less embarrassing than it sounds).

Your Vision Changes

Ah, hormones—Is there any part of the body you don’t control? Apparently not. If you’re not seeing your ABCs like you used to, you’re not alone. Up to 20 percent of women experience vision changes after pregnancy, Optometrist Dr. Arian Fartash said on her website. This is because pregnancy hormones cause water retention, which can cause swelling in the eyes. 

“Your feet don’t only swell, but your eyes can swell, too, and that makes your vision change,” Fartash said in her video blog, “Ask an Eye Doctor.” “These changes can stay until after you’re done breastfeeding—or it can stay until the rest of your life.” Consequently, Fartash recommends getting your eyes checked after pregnancy to see if you need a new prescription. 

You Have Phantom Baby Kicks

Yes, phantom kicks are a thing. Your tummy may not be growing a baby anymore, but it’s not uncommon to feel those familiar baby flutters even long after childbirth. According to Texas OB-GYN Tiffany Woodus, phantom kicks are the perception of fetal movement in the abdomen weeks, months, or years after pregnancy has ended. And it's experienced by more women than you'd think. 

Experts aren’t sure why women experience phantom kicks, but according to an online survey done in Australia, women who experience them do so for an average of 6.8 years postpartum, with one mom in the survey reporting phantom kicks up to 28 years later!

My daughter is 7 and I STILL get them!,” said a Mama in this thread.

It freaks me out every time. I'm so glad I saw this post, it's had me guessing a lot,” said another. “My son is nearly three and I've been getting them for the last 6 months. A part of me thinks it's my body teasing me because I do want a second now.”

“Same thing happens to me,” said another. “I even took a pregnancy test to confirm I'm not going crazy even though there was zero chance of pregnancy.”

Your Face Has Dark Spots All Over It

If your face looks splotchier than it did in your child-free days—or if you suddenly have a blanket of freckles all over your nose, you probably have melasma, a common condition caused by pregnancy hormones (it can also happen with the start of birth control pills). The condition, categorized by splotches or freckles of darker skin, usually occurs mainly on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. 

For some women, it goes away a few months after their baby is born (or after they stop taking the pill); for others, the change is permanent. But don’t despair: There are several treatments that may help, including lightening creams and laser light therapy. 

A Final Note

While it may seem daunting to learn about all the uncomfortable or potentially permanent side effects of pregnancy, try to keep things in perspective: After all, you just added a human to the world. Those are battle scars you're earning!

And anyway—stretch marks, vision changes, and splotchy skin equals new baby, plus a lifetime of love and purpose. We'll take it.

Sometimes when I go out with my non-verbal son, I can be a bit on guard. My concern is that someone will say something to or about us, and it will cause some old-school ninja battle in the middle of the Olive Garden. I know it’s just paranoia because, in the 11 years since he was born, I have had a grand total of zero ultimate showdowns. Still, my senses tingle, and my antennae go up when we’re surrounded by strangers who appear to be looking over.

Lucas is well-behaved, though. That’s why I don’t allow too much leeway from onlookers. He doesn’t bother anyone and, aside from some excited shouts here and there, he is always on his best behavior. He certainly was on that Father’s Day we all went out to eat.

Out at a beachside restaurant here on Long Island, the day had gone pretty well. The host sat us at a table overlooking the water and, through the window behind my son, I could see all the families dining at outside tables.

Feverishly poking around on his iPad, my boy was distracted from the meal in front of him. We all enjoyed our appetizers as I’d look up to occasionally smile in his direction and offer him bread. As I mentioned, he was being great. There was no reason that there should have been a little boy staring at him through the window. Which there was.

I looked only out of the corner of my eye. Stares from young kids are somewhat tolerable. After all, my son is different than most. Curiosity from children, provided they’re not rude, should be allowed. My daughter, who is neurotypical, was once that age. I’d encourage her to ask questions too. It’s understandable.

Laughter, however, isn’t understandable. So when I saw this kid in the glass smiling and appearing to laugh, I got a bit annoyed. Still, I told myself, it is what it is. They weren’t close enough that I could say anything, and, since glass was there, I wasn’t completely sure what was happening. I tried to calm myself. I tried to enjoy Father’s Day without getting all ninja’d out.

My blood pressure rose as the courses came out and, as time went on, I saw this kid running to the parents at his table. They all appeared to be looking over at us now and, from what I could see, laughing. I was ready to flip tables.

All my son was doing was playing on his iPad. He wasn’t bothering a soul. Yet, this gruesome family wants to laugh at him? I had internally debated whether or not to ruin Father’s Day by getting carted off to jail for some major fatherly meltdown. The back and forth was still going on as I saw them laughing and pointing and bouncing the son on the father’s lap.

Wait, what?

The staring window kid, from what I could see from my peripheral vision, was way too old for lap rides at a restaurant. He was my son’s age and, while Lucas sits on my laugh and giggles as I tickle him, most kids without special needs aren’t. That’s when I looked up and, for the first time that whole meal, saw the family behind the glass.

Their son was jumping and clapping. He had a joyous smile that I had seen before on the face of my own child. This was not the boy I was expecting to see. Not only that, but he was holding an iPad of his own. It was in the exact same case as Lucas’s iPad. That’s when it all hit me. He wasn’t laughing at my son. He was just like my son. They were all pointing at his iPad because it was the same one that their family was using, right down to the bright blue rubber case.

In that moment, I experienced so many different feelings. I felt bad for having prejudged another family without even bothering to look directly in their direction. It was all that I had condemned the rest of the world for doing to us. Had I really seen them, I’d have known from the start that they weren’t mocking us. They were us.

I also felt less alone. So often, we’d go out and feel we were the only family in the world with a child like ours. We aren’t. There are so many others just like us. We’re far from alone. We never see them, though, if we never look.

With first days right around the corner, one mom is going viral on TikTok for the very honest, very blunt list of rules she’s made for her son. You can tell this is a mom who suffers no fools—and who is setting her son up for a successful transition from summer back to the classroom.

She then launches into the rules, starting with, “What we not gonna do is change up our stomach energy. You’ve been living on a diet of hot chips, chicken nuggets, and every popsicle and disgusting drink known to man, without one stomach ache. You’re not about to come to me talking about ‘my stomach hurt’ like you’ve got the intestinal tract of a geriatric Crohn’s patient. This ain’t that.”

Amen, mama. What is it about back-to-school time that makes tummy aches flare up like they do? We have our hunches.

Rule #2? “What we not gonna do is act like we can’t wake up. You’ve getting up at 6:77 every morning—and yes, I said 6:77 because it’s some ungodly hour that doesn’t exist—asking me about breakfast. This ain’t that.”

@thicnicjack continues through her list of rules in a similarly direct fashion, noting that her son will be preparing his clothes for school the night before and that he won’t be acting like he’s run out of school supplies on Day 2, after she “spent $75,000 making sure everything on that list was there.” Then she gets to one that will have every parent nodding along.

“What we not gonna do is tell me about reports, permission slips, and picture day packets the day before they’re due. I’m not about to get my blood pressure up running around to get supplies.”

In the comments, other parents are praising these no-nonsense rules.

“This is the best PSA ever for children,” one wrote. Another added, “Ma’am respectfully, do you do presentations via Zoom?? cause my boy needs this.”

Happy back-to-school season!

Introducing your baby to solid foods is an exciting time. You get to see what they like and dislike, and experience a whole world of new tastes with them. Except for that part where you’re constantly terrified that they’re going to choke on something. Every tiny cough or noise while eating can send a parent’s blood pressure through the roof, which is why a mom (who is also a former paramedic) made a super helpful TikTok video to show parents the difference between gagging and choking in an infant.

Nikki Jurcutz is pretty well known for her videos, where she educates parents on foods that are sneaky choking risks and how to prepare foods to make them safer for littles to eat. And one of her newer videos, showing what a gagging baby looks like, is going to save a lot of parents from panic thinking their little one is choking.

Alongside the video, Jurcutz wrote, “If your child is doing this, DO NOT do backblows. This is a classic example of what gagging looks like. The treatment for a gagging child? Sit back and watch.”

According to Jurcutz, “Gagging is a normal protective reflex” that stops food from going into the baby’s airway—in other words, it actually prevents choking. Gagging is a good thing, and if it happens to your child, you need to just let it happen.

When you need to step in and help, Jurcutz says, is if your baby is panicked and unable to make any noise. Those are signs of actual choking. But if you hear crying, coughing, or retching, your baby is fine! It can be scary, but the best thing to do is just let it pass.

While you can always expose your child to some episodes of Doc McStuffins to ease anxieties about going to the doctor, there are still some medical procedures and protocols that kids may find daunting

Let’s be honest… even as an adult, going to the doctor’s office can be scary. Shots and other medical procedures, beeping noises, and blood droplets are just a few unpleasantries that typically accompany a check-up or sick visit. Now imagine how your little one feels about all this: they leave a waiting room filled with vibrant colors and endless toys and enter a sterile environment for an appointment with a person they barely know, with little to no input into what’s going on.

“Fear of the unknown is worse than knowing what to anticipate so framing things in a positive light and without too much detail is best. Explanations need to be at the level of understanding for the child’s age, so keeping them simple and light,” says Denise Scott, MD, a pediatrician with JustAnswer and author of Feed Your Child’s Future Health, Prevent Disease Before It Starts.

To help prepare kids for scary blood draws, shots, and other things, we spoke with pediatricians to find out how to make a child feel most comfortable during these (potentially) scary medical procedures.

Shots and Blood Draws

Two common medical procedures call for needles: shots and blood draws. This can be anything from the flu shot to the tetanus shot and a comprehensive blood panel at a checkup. While they may be scary, it’s important to let your kiddo know what to expect.

“For shots and blood draws, let them know they can scream and cry and do not have to watch but they need to hold very still. Tell them it will feel like a quick pinch or the snap of a rubber band, and you can even demonstrate this to yourself or your child if they are willing,” says Scott.

Additionally, you’ll also want to explain to them how keeping an arm or leg loose and relaxed rather than tensing the muscle can help make the process easier for both parties.

To help ease the pain afterward, have the option of fun Band-Aids to choose from and perhaps a lollipop on standby. These types of distractions will help your child forget about the minuscule amount of pain they just experienced.

X-Rays

If a child happens to break or fracture a bone, then an X-ray is typically a standard medical procedure done at the doctor’s office or in an emergency room. Some kids might find seeing a detailed image of their bones to be fascinating, however, other kids may not be as interested.

“It’s super important that your child keeps very still when getting X-rays, so the picture is clear. Plus, getting it right the first time limits their exposure to radiation,” says Harvey Karp, MD, pediatrician and CEO of Happiest Baby.

For school-age kids, Karps suggests explaining that getting an X-ray is like playing freeze tag, and they’ve been tagged. You can tell them that as soon as the picture is taken, the X-ray tech will “unfreeze” them.

“In certain circumstances, wrapping your child—no matter their age—swaddle-style may also help them stay still and feel calm,” says Karp.

Nose and Throat Swabs

Whether your child needs to be tested for COVID or strep throat, that typically requires throat and nose swabs. This can be both scary and uncomfortable for a child, but Krupa Playforth, MD, a board-certified pediatrician and founder of The Pediatrician Mom has a few pointers to make the process easier.

“My favorite trick for throat swabs is to tell kids to “pant like a puppy” or “roar like a dinosaur” during the actual swab. This serves two purposes: first, it actually opens the mouth wider and elevates the palate, making it easier to do a swab quickly and efficiently because you can visualize what you’re doing better. Second, it serves as a comical distraction for many children, which also helps prevent them from shaking their head or batting away the swab.”

Karp adds to tell your kids to keep their eyes open during the swab to prevent gagging— for help with this you’ll want to pick a spot on the ceiling to have them look at.

Stitches

For those children who are prone to long and deep cuts, they must get stitches to aid in safe and quick healing. Now the thought of stitches can be scary, especially because a child typically isn’t under general anesthesia during this in-office medical procedure.

Small children may have to lay on a papoose board to control their movements. It is like a swaddle for a big kid and is invaluable to the physician to prevent unwanted movement in the arms and legs.

“A parent can help by talking or singing to the child, holding a video for them to watch (if not in the way), or using other forms of distraction,” says Karp. “The child should be aware that they will get a little sting, then the medicine will take the pain away so they do not feel anything.”

Blood Pressure Cuffs

Your child will probably be triaged before seeing the doctor and this typically includes taking a temperature, checking the oxygen level, and getting a blood pressure reading. This might seem like a breeze for adults, but kids may not understand the concept of the cuff squeezing their arm.

“I help them anticipate this by saying that their arm will get a big hug with a special balloon, then loosen again,” says Scott.

Karp adds you’ll want to dress your child in a loose-sleeved or short-sleeved shirt to make the test as easy as possible.

When it comes to the topic of “must-dos” while pregnant, there is no shortage of suggestions—from well-meaning friends, online articles, and even perfect strangers. Take your prenatals, get plenty of rest, see your doctor regularly…the list goes on. But what you may not hear as often are things you should avoid during pregnancy. We’ve rounded up a list of seven things to skip while expecting.

Certain Foods
Trying to navigate the world of pregnancy cravings while still managing to consume a healthy, well-balanced diet isn’t easy. But consuming only foods safe for your developing baby is one of the most important things you can do while pregnant. As a rule of thumb, it’s not the type of food as much as how it’s made that matters. For example, beef, poultry, and seafood all get the green light, unless undercooked or raw. (Deli meat is a no-go, too.) Other foods to pass on: soft cheese, such as brie and feta; raw eggs; and unpasteurized dairy products.

Certain Skincare Ingredients
It’s a no-brainer to do an immediate check on any supplements you take internally once those two little lines appear, but many women forget to also review the ingredients in the lotions and serums they apply topically. The FDA maintains an extensive list of ingredients to watch out for, which include retinoids (known to cause birth defects), benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, and sunscreens that contain oxybenzone or avobenzone (shown to impact a fetus’s developing nervous system). But your best bet is to talk to your healthcare provider. To be sure your products are in the clear, pop them into your purse before your next OB visit for review.

Kitty Litter
If a cat is part of your family, it’s likely that cleaning out the litter box ranks high on the worst chores list, alongside scrubbing toilets and washing dishes. The good news? You have doctor’s orders to avoid scooping the box for your full term. Kitty litter can expose you to toxoplasmosis, a rare parasitic disease, which has been shown to lead to miscarriage or fetus malformations. If you’re a solo feline owner and must take on the task, be sure to wear gloves and wash thoroughly after changing out the box. Also, keep in mind, litter isn’t the only source of toxoplasmosis—consuming insufficiently cooked meat or touching infected gardening soil can also transmit the disease.

Stress
While a certain amount of trepidation is to be expected while you’re expecting, especially if it’s your first pregnancy, limiting outside stressors is important. Chronic and serious stress during pregnancy has been linked to miscarriage, high blood pressure, premature delivery, and even effects on baby’s brain development. Make an effort to reduce stressful life situations and find healthy ways to cope with any stressful situations that inevitably arise.

Specific Beverages
Passing on alcohol during pregnancy is a no-brainer, but there are other sips to skip. Due to potential bacteria, avoid unpasteurized milk and juices (including those that are fresh-squeezed). Because caffeine (think: coffee, black and green tea, and soda) and artificial sweeteners can pass through the placenta to baby, it’s best to proceed with caution and enjoy these drinks sparingly, if at all. Yummy swaps: sparkling water with a splash of pasteurized fruit juice, herbal teas, and decaf coffee.

Saunas and Spas
Easing your achy pregnancy muscles in a spa or sauna might sound like just what the OB ordered, but it’s actually quite the opposite. Elevated body temperature (above 101 degrees) can lead to complications for mama, such as lowered blood pressure, dehydration, and dizziness, as well as increasing the risk of birth defects for baby. A warm bath or a heating pad focused on sore spots is a safer soothing alternative.

Wet Paint
While it can be tempting to roll up your sleeves and paint that baby nursery yourself, it’s best to leave the painting to the professionals or your nearest and dearest. While today’s paints do not contain lead, they can contain harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through your skin or inhaled. If recreational painting is a favorite hobby or profession, be sure to mask up, wear protective clothing, and ensure the space is well-ventilated before allowing your inner artist to emerge.

The importance of kindness can’t be overstated. It builds empathy and makes kids more resilient

Anyone who’s ever seen a two-year-old shout “MINE!” during a tussle with another toddler may question a child’s innate altruism. The good news is that experts say kindness is instinctual and that being kind should be every parent’s No. 1 goal. Why? Studies show that the simple act of being nice helps kids grow into happier, healthier, and more likable people.

“Kindness helps children’s mental health, their resilience, as well as their peak performance,” says educational psychologist Michele Borba, author of Thrivers: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine. Kindness Builds Empathy

Kindness and empathy often go hand in hand. After all, it takes an understanding of what someone is going through to figure out the best way to help them. 

"It doesn’t mean kindness is the same as empathy," said Borba, who also wrote the 2016 book, UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World. "Practicing empathy helps a child develop a kindness mindset. They say, ‘I see myself as a kind person,' and then they’re more likely to keep doing it."

But here's the bad news: Empathy is going down. According to a nearly 30-year study into empathy, teens today are 40% less empathetic than they were just a generation ago, while narcissism has increased by 58%. 

Of course, this can change if kids today learn to cultivate what Borba calls their empathy "superpower." Parents can do this with something as simple as reading to their children and stopping to ask, "How do you think that character is feeling right now?"

"Empathy is a superpower to helping kids become more resilient in a more uncertain world," Borba said. "With everything going on in the world today, from racism to social injustice, now is prime time to think empathy and to have some real serious wonderful debates in your family."

It Makes Kids More Resilient

As parents, you've probably seen it. Your child is having a bad day: She's slow to get out of bed; she's fighting with her sibling; she bickers with you. Then, the final straw: She stubs her toe.

Cue the meltdown.

But consider: If that same child is bobbing along, happy and regulated, that same stubbed toe might spark barely a whimper.

Experts say it's a domino effect: Kindness sparks happiness and gratitude—which builds resilience. "If you’re concerned about your pain—disappointment, stress, unhappiness—it’s hard to feel for others," Borba said. "You’re in self-care mode and often dial your empathy down so you can breathe."

Once kids learn the secret of giving back or feeling with another, they can realize they’re not alone, Borba said. Stress reduces, empathy opens, and they find a way to be kind to each other (and themselves!).

"They also learn a key lesson," she added. "Compassion in action is one of the best ways to help another and yourself."

It Builds Strong Leaders

According to this research from the Center for Creative Leadership, kindness is crucial for building successful leaders. The study demonstrated that empathetic leaders, in particular, were considered better at their jobs than those who didn't show high levels of empathy. 

"Empathetic leaders are assets to organizations, in part, because they can effectively build and maintain relationships—a critical part of leading organizations anywhere in the world," the research concluded.

Borba agreed. "Thrivers have an 'I got this feeling,'" she said, adding that empathy and kindness are two of the critical skills kids need to thrive as adults. "They're kids who think we, not me. Kids who, when adversity comes, are not so quick to wave it off; instead, they’re trying to think all the views that are important and they're asking, 'How can I solve this?'"  

It Makes People Happier

Ask Kindness Rocks Project founder Megan Murphy why she likes to paint words onto rocks and leave them anonymously on the ground for strangers, and she'll be quick to tell you: It just feels good. 

"It’s like art therapy. You give yourself that message that you need, and then give it to someone else who might be experiencing the same thing," said Murphy, a life coach and mother of two whose simple idea in 2014 to paint rocks and leave them anonymously for strangers has sparked a worldwide phenomenon that has spread to more than 90 countries. "I never planned to make a movement; I just wanted people to spread kindness."

Studies show that kindness activates the pleasure centers of the brain, raising serotonin levels and decreasing cortisol (stress) levels. In other words, kindness rewires our brains to be happy. But you know what's even cooler? It can rewire other people's brains, too. Studies show that a single act of kindness not only increases feel-good chemicals in the brains of the giver, but it also benefits the receiver—and anyone who witnesses the act (which explains feel-good stories like this one about a teacher who was suddenly gifted more than $500 by four strangers on a cross-country flight).

"When we’re in service of others, our problems seem lesser," Murphy said. "It gives us a greater perspective." 

It Builds Confidence

Since being kind makes us feel good, what better way to hone a child's sense of self-worth than to practice kindness? 

"Many small acts of kindness add up to bigger feelings," said Murphy. "Now, more than ever, it's important for kids to understand that kindness exists, to see their classmates spreading kindness and being nice to each other."

But don't just take her word for it. A study published in the Journal of Adolescence demonstrated that acts of kindness—whether big (like helping build a house for a low-income family) or small (painting kindness rocks)— boost levels of self-esteem in kids and teens. 

"It gives kids a sense of purpose and a sense of, 'I matter,' Murphy said. "There’s no greater sense than feeling like 'I matter.'"

It Makes You Healthier

Want to boost your immune system? Be kind. According to multiple studies, kind people have better overall health, lower blood pressure and stronger well-being (conversely, depression and anxiety can make us more likely to get sick).

And it doesn't matter how small the act. Even simple acts of kindness (like anything in this free printable Kindness Calendar) can give our immune systems a boost as well as benefit our overall mental and cardiovascular health.

"It can be said that a generous life is a happier and healthier one," was the conclusion of this report published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. "A strong correlation exists between the well-being, happiness, health, and longevity of people who are emotionally kind and compassionate."

Kind People Have More Friends

Leave it to science to prove what we've all known forever, but here it is—people like nice people. 

According to an Australian study of almost 3,000 high schoolers, kids who exhibited more kind behaviors had more friends than those who showed more "antisocial" behaviors. Similarly, this study of Canadian teens also showed that high schoolers who performed three acts of kindness toward others during a prescribed four-week period were better liked by their peers than those who performed three acts for themselves. Not surprisingly, studies have also shown that kids who have a kind mindset are less likely to be bullied or bully others. 

"It may be easier to be friends with a kind person, but those who are unkind not only need friends but need kindness demonstrated to them," said Bo Whittenton, "Chief Kindness Officer" at the Be Kind People Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to "building a generation of respectful, responsible, healthy and caring citizens" through kindness-based educational programming. "We need to teach our children that kindness matters and should be practiced every day." 

As if simply being happier isn't impetus enough to choose kindness, how about living a longer and healthier life? This study of more than 300,000 people found that having friends was the number 1 factor in leading a healthier, happier life. In fact, according to research, a lack of friends was as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and riskier than being obese when it comes to decreasing your lifespan.

It Makes the World a Better Place
