Sprinklers, dump buckets, and loads of fun

As the temps are creeping up, an NYC park with a sprinkler where the kids can cool down is a lifesaver. New York is home to playgrounds and splash pads of all kinds, and you can find these refreshing spots of all shapes, sizes, themes, and intensity in every borough. We’ve rounded up our favorite playgrounds with water features in NYC, including parks for tiny tots, the best Central Park sprinklers, places to spend almost the whole day, and more! For more ways to keep cool, check out our favorite shady playgrounds, our picks of kid-friendly movie theaters and the best NYC museum shows for kids right now.

Pier 51 in Hudson River Park

Ahoy, mateys! A neighborhood favorite with river views, Hudson River Park’s Pier 51 Playground is great for water lovers. At the heart of the playground is a wooden pirate ship. A spiral ramp leads to the lookout, then kids slide down into a water play area outfitted with huge water gushers and buckets. Kids can also “search for lost treasure” in the sand pit.

A yellow, tree-like structure spritzes water for those kiddies who can’t get enough of H20. Brass animals, such as turtles and crabs, adorn the playground, and the sand play area and fences explain Manhattan’s ecological history. Little tots like wading in the moving stream and playing in the small spray sprinklers. Don’t forget your towels and sunscreen!

Restrooms: Comfort stations are located on-site along the walking path.

Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Chelsea Park
The Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Hudson River Park has always been a popular spot for locals and otherwise, and a $34 million overhaul from architect Michael Van-Valkenburgh (his firm is behind the design of Brooklyn Bridge Park as well) brought playground equipment from Danish firm MONSTRUM to the northeast for the first time. Gentle sprinklers are among play structures that include a giant, one-of-a-kind, multicolor Robina wood pipefish (a species found in the Hudson), a 64-foot wooden slide, plus a large sandpit, and limestone cattle head sculptures salvaged from an old building in the meatpacking district.

Restrooms: You can access restrooms in Chelsea Park at West 23rd Street.

Located near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this Central Park playground has climbing pyramids and other play features inspired by the museum’s collection of Egyptian Art. The Ancient Playground has two user-activated water features. Big kids can enjoy the main climbing structure where water runs down an obelisk and cascades like a mini-waterfall into an open area with water jets; a more tame area for younger children features spray nozzles embedded in the walls.

Bonus: a LEGO store/experience is located a stone’s throw away on 5th Avenue at 23rd Street. Make it a day out: There are Wifi hotspots throughout the park, and Eataly is right across the street on Fifth Ave.

The Water Lab at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Other splash pads pale in comparison to this incredible water play space. Set within natural rock structures, kids can run through water jets, frolic in sprinklers, or use pumps to create their own water fountains. To complete the beach feel, there’s a huge sand pit and swings nearby.

The Water Lab opens to the public once temperatures reach a steady 80+ degrees, and closes down in inclement weather. Check ahead! And if you’re concerned about getting your belongings wet, there are lockers available for free and for very cheap (25 cents!) at Pier 2 and 5.

In the winter, the Prospect Park LeFrak Center at Lakeside is an ice skating rink, but it transforms into a splash pad come summer. The area has dozens of water jets shooting out periodically, and a playtime favorite for the regulars is bringing buckets and cups to fill and dump. The Splash Pad is open daily from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. If you’re hungry, grab a bite at the Bluestone Cafe on site. If you’re there on a Sunday, check out Smorgasburg nearby at the park’s Breeze Hill. Want to do something while drying off? Rent a bicycle or a boat for a spin on land or the lake.

After a major makeover in 2012, this Park Slope gem is now loaded with activities for kids of all ages and tons of room to roam. The littlest kiddos will love the colorful farm animal cutouts, interactive panels and scaled-down slides. Older kids can test their balance and climbing skills on a giant, caterpillar-shaped structure.

On warm days, kids flock to the sprinkler area, which is complete with water cannons. And if you've got older kids who want a wild ride, walk to the nearby Seward Street Slides but be sure to bring some cardboard with you!

Alamo Square Children's Play Area

Located on the east side of the park, the playground at Alamo Square rivals views from nearly any peak in the city. If you’re not gazing at the famous Painted Ladies you can peek the Transamerica Pyramid and the gilded dome of City Hall and from the top of the equipment spot the Golden Gate Bridge. With an elevated section for the 2-5 crowd, you can keep your little ones at an arm’s length while still having a bird’s eye view of the bigger kids. The west side of the park is designated for doggies, so let your pooches have a go and your kiddos have a gander. There are restrooms but they are a short walk from the actual playground.

Grattan Playground

Covering a full city block in Cole Valley, this playground is not one the kids will soon outgrow. The upper level playground (adjacent to the Haight Ashbury Community Nursery School) has lots of sand and equipment suited toward the preschool and toddler and even crawling crowd. The lower playground has slightly dated features good for school age kids: sand, giant swings and slides alongside a big green soccer field. Bring some chalk to draw on the chalk wall, or check out the basketball and tennis courts up above the nursery school.

Presidio Heights Playground

A hidden gem, this park feels like you are in someone’s (amazing) back yard. Features include a toddler play area with big sand pit, slides, swings and a climbing structure. There's also a full length basketball court that serves as a roadway for the many riding toys donated by local parents.

Julius Kahn Playground

This playground and park features Golden Gate Bridge, Bay and Marin Headlands views on display, assuming you visit on a fog-free day. This is a great spot for the little kids and big kids alike since since there are separate play structures within the large fenced-in playground. A 2003 renovation transformed a heavily used playground into a state-of-the-art, Parisian-style play area. The new Julius Kahn design was developed with the feel and aesthetics of the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The park also includes an interactive wet sand play sculpture and unique and challenging play equipment.

JP Murphy Playground & Clubhouse, Golden Gate Heights

Tucked away on a hill in the Inner Sunset/Golden Gate Heights neighborhood, this park has a playground, tennis court, a chic modern club house that can be rented for parties, restrooms and a big bonus: a sneak peek of the Golden Gate Bridge. The playground is remarkably out of the wind (for the most part) and is just contained enough that you can kick back and watch your kids take a turn on the chair swing.

Cabrillo Playground

The entire playground was remodeled in 2013 and features a pirate ship play structure (complete with cannons and a crow’s nest!), cement Ping-Pong tables and built-in four-square and hopscotch, as well as tennis and basketball courts. There’s a cute clubhouse that can be accessed from one of the climbing structures and restrooms. A very small strip of grass, located smack in the middle of the park, is the perfect place to snack-break.

Koret Children’s Quarter (Golden Gate Park Children’s Playground)

Kate Loweth

The mother of all playgrounds, on a Saturday mid-morning this is not for the faint-of-heart. It’s big, there’s a ton to do and it’s busy. (The din of children squealing with delight almost drowns out the drums of Hippie Hill). Try out the cement slides—one of the few remnants of the vintage playground that once stood here (bring scrap cardboard). The playground also includes one of the tallest climbing structures in the park circuit, a water feature and sand that mix together for a messily awesome good time and a carousel! Restrooms are just past the carousel.

45th Avenue Playground

Locals call it the Blue Boat Playground and your little pirates will love the actual boat docked in the sand at this playground. Though this isn’t a recent reno it’s still a well-kept and well-loved playground in Golden Gate Park’s outer reaches. Surrounded by big trees, it’s shadier and cooler than some other spots, so keep those fleeces on hand for when Karl the Fog comes to play. The picnic area is reservable through GGP. Brand-new restrooms are scheduled to open soon!

Sunset Rec Center

In addition to a massive rec center with indoor courts (and clean restrooms!) there is a sweet playground with two areas for toddlers and big kids, with plenty of little nooks to explore. Elmhurst Park playground
This is a high-energy place to play, complete with tiny “motorbikes” that entice little ones to hop on and pretend to take a ride. It’s surrounded by a six-acre green space where families picnic on the grass, and kids love rolling down the hills here. There is a small trail around the playground that locals use to jog or bike and a small splash pad is a good place for little tikes to cool off in the summer. This is another area where parking can be a challenge, but The Grand Avenue subway station, served by the E, M and R is on the same block.

Astoria Heights Playground
This modern playground filled with activity is somewhat hidden amongst a few apartment buildings. The area school’s population and local community offered significant input on its design, which is divided into two areas. Visit the upper level for tennis, volleyball, basketball and exercise equipment. Smaller kids will love the climbing and sliding apparatus here, and in the summer, there’s an enclosed splash pad. Picnic tables make this playground a solid choice to spend an afternoon or host a birthday party. The Astoria Boulevard subway station is a few blocks away.

A newly-renovated splash pad comes complete with dunk bucket that pours on to people below when it’s full. A padded play surface makes this a spot where little ones can run around and you don’t have to worry. Benches are plentiful here, so parents can comfortably watch their children explore. Need more? Ella Fitzgerald Playground
This playground named for one of jazz’s leading ladies is located between three of Queens’ largest parks: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Kissena Park and Cunningham Park. (Pro-tip: There is a bike lane that connects the three green spaces.) The jungle gym is not brand new but it offers everything that little ones love about a playground. The splash pad is compact and but well used during the hot months. Fun Fact: As part of the NYC Parks Initiative to expand African American representation in 2020, this playground was renamed to honor Ella Fitzgerald, former Queens resident, for her incredible contributions to jazz and music.

It’s a well-maintained park with access to a pond that has been under construction recently, normally plenty of ducks and even turtles can be spotted here. A short walk through a paved pathway leads to the playground on the opposite end. There is a fun splash pad, “kid’s only” hide-out and climbing structures safe for tots to explore. Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Covering a whopping 898 acres of space, Flushing Meadows Corona Park is the largest park in Queens. (It is, in fact, larger than Central Park.) Known for hosting two 20-century World’s Fairs, the remnants of which include the iconic Unisphere, it is also home to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and Citi Field, home to the New York Mets. You have your pick of playgrounds here—there are eight! One of the older, but still very popular playgrounds here is Jurassic Playground (above), which is a must-visit for any family with a dino-crazed tot. Hop on a giant dinosaur statue, and play among the silhouettes of dinos of all kinds. Plus, there’s a nice lake view and picnic tables. Playground For All Children
Also located in Flushing Meadows Park, this special playground was built in 1984. It was the first playground in the country to offer an accessible play environment for children of all abilities. This model playground paved the way for future sites near and far and it is designed for kids ages three to 12 to exercise their social, cognitive and motor skills. A recreation area invites kids to cross a 12-foot suspension bridge, and they can make music and cool off in the Water Wheel zone. Another reason to visit this park, especially in the summer? It’s got shade. Pro-tip: It is right next door to Queens Zoo, Queens Museum and the Hall of Science. Plan ahead and make it a full day of activities. It is a healthy 20-minute walk from the Mets-Willets subway station.

Sidelined Pullman Train Car—Plano, IL

Airbnb

Oh, the stories this Pullman Train car, the Constitution, could tell. Built in 1905, it was basically Air Force One for Presidents Harding and Wilson, and when the president of the Illinois Railway Museum visited, he said it was the most well-preserved Pullman train car in the U.S. A large living room with fireplaces, a master bedroom and bathroom have been added to the original car, which consisted of four staterooms, an observation deck, a dining room and a galley. This is all set atop a bluff overlooking Big Rock Creek and a floodplain full of 200-year old oak trees where you might see an Eagle or two. The Best Airbnbs for Families Across the Country

Fairytale Castles You Can Actually Rent IRL

Planning a Multi-Family Vacation? Here’s What You Need to Know

They may not be able to partake in the tastings, but that doesn’t mean kids can’t enjoy a trip to Napa. As long as you limit the number of stops (always a good idea when carpooling a load of little ones, obviously) and throw in a few activities just for them, the whole family can enjoy a day or a vacation in wine country. See our favorite places below.

THINGS TO DO

At the base of the valley lies Napa itself, a former drive-by town that in recent years has transformed into a destination in itself. Downtown’s best stops are clustered around a bend in the river, so take a walk along the paths or over the bridges to stretch the legs after the first bit of driving. You may even want to duck into one of downtown’s tasting rooms (we love Bounty Hunter, as well as the bargains at the Oxbow Wine Merchant to get the day started off right.

If you’re going to ask kids to sit in the car and then behave at the wineries while you try a wine or two, they’re going to have to run off some energy first. A stop at the Calistoga Petrified Forest offers trails through a redwood forest that’s hard as a rock. Thanks to a volcano eruption 3.4 million years ago when weird winged creatures roamed the earth, all redwoods you’ll see have been turned to stone.

Another great option is to pile the family onto the luxurious Napa Wine Train and take the driving out of the equation. The three-hour roundtrip journey flies by while you enjoy gourmet lunch or dinner (and local wines for the grownups) in the vintage dining or domed cars. Kids can get fresh air waving out the back of the train at the cars crawling up and down the valley.

If you want to avoid excessive sun or rain, take the kids to Scientopia Discovery Center. This children’s museum and playspace offer all-day admission, so you can drop in both on your way up and down the valley and enjoy the exhibits on bubbles, magnets, scents, wind, and much more. TIP: The vending machine stocks healthy snacks, but it’s more fun to pack your own picnic to enjoy in the snack room.

If the grown-ups have their hearts set on doing some tasting, there are a few wineries up here that cater to kiddos. At Sterling Vineyards, kids enjoy a tram ride with great views at the top. The ultra-romantic Castello di Amorosa resembles a medieval Italian castle and provides grape juice for children to sip on while their parents taste the real deal.  And for really fantastic wines in a classic Silverado Trail setting, Robert Sinskey’s pinot noirs, pinot blanc, and more are paired with seasonal delicacies from the kitchen for a truly indulgent experience. TIP: Kids love the koi ponds out in front.

See our other favorite wineries to visit with kids in our detailed Insider’s Guide to Napa with kids.

WHERE TO EAT

Downtown Napa’s Oxbow Public Market is wine country’s equivalent of San Francisco’s Ferry Building. With artisans and food purveyors like Ritual Coffee Roasters, Hog Island Oyster Company, Fatted Calf, and Kara’s Cupcakes, you can taste your way through Northern California’s best delicacies or pick up some picnic items to take with you for your day.

Also in downtown, Pizzeria Azzurro’s sleek subway-tiled interior compliments the true stars of the restaurant—the wood-fired stove and the perfect pies it turns out.

For the best burgers, be sure to make a stop at Gott’s Roadside (either in St. Helena or Napa). Made with locally sourced foods, there’s an innovative kids’ menu, indoor and outdoor seating, and parents can even grab a glass of vino from the extensive wine list.

photo: Maria Orlova via Unsplash

WHERE TO STAY

At Solage Calistoga, the fun starts at check-in, when you’re led to your parking spot by a valet on a bicycle. Then you’ll be loaned some cruisers to use during your stay, for an easy pedal around the resort, or even into nearby downtown Calistoga. The kids will want to make the geothermally-heated pool home base, and you’ll want to camp out at the spa, but the modern, airy suites have their own allure.

If you’re not down with eating all your meals out with a posse of toddlers, then you may want to stay at the Westin Verasa, located in downtown Napa. The suites at this luxe property feature full kitchens, so you can whip up meals to save money, time, meltdowns—and it’s walking distance from Oxbow, so you’re covered in terms of meat, produce, bread, cheese, and much more. There’s also an outdoor pool and a bocce court in case you haven’t found enough to occupy your days in Napa.

The resort staff also run events with kids in mind—a seasonal grape stomp, tractor rides, and BBQs as well as holiday specials and an upcoming Easter egg hunt. Wine tastings and behind the scenes winery tours are offered daily.
