Whether you’ve heard of them or not yet, boo baskets are the newest Halloween-y project that’s gone viral. How do we know? TikTok, obviously. TikTok creator @emmasemingson‘s video seems to be at the heart of the trend (though we can’t say for sure whether or not she’s the Boo Basket Originator, she definitely knows her stuff).

See? Apparently, friends, you are entitled to a basket chock full of fall and Halloween goodies and we didn’t even know it. A boo basket is basically a basket (surprise!) with all sorts of little gifts and treats to celebrate the season. Wives and girlfriends appear to make up the bulk of recipients, though, of course, you can make a boo basket for anyone in your life. In fact, there are some people who use the ‘pass it along’ method of ‘booing’ someone. They leave a basket for a friend or neighbor, and that’s their cue to make one for someone else. But, you can give them however you want!

And, sure, it may feel like they’re just another thing to worry about during an already busy season, but trust us. These are seriously adorable, and, as TikTok creator Hunter from the account @maya.and.hunter points out, if your wife sends you a video of something, go ahead and do that something.

Alice’s Tea Cup

A reasonably priced tea can be tough to find. At Alice’s Tea Cup, your crew can enjoy a full English tea service without running up a huge bill. This local chain has three locations for a baby shower in NYC: one on the Upper East Side, one on the Upper West and one in Brooklyn Heights. Depending on your party size and preferred location, you can reserve a spot in the main dining room or rent a private room. Guests will get their fill on sweets, savory sandwiches and teas from around the world. Make a morning reservation before 11:30 a.m. on weekdays or 3 p.m. on weekends to take advantage of their Mad Morning Tea and get the best price. Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon 

If your goal is an authentic high tea with the mom-to-be, try Lady Mendl’s. Up the street from Gramercy Park, located inside The Inn at Irving Place, you’ll find a beautiful room with Victorian-style architecture and finishings. The inn offers a five-course tea with freshly baked scones and classic finger sandwiches. There is just one downside: the experience is costly. Pricing for the main tea salon, which holds up to 50 people, starts at $5000 for four hours on weekends. A more reasonable, yet still pricey, option is hosting the party in their formal library, which holds up to 20 guests. You can rent it starting at $2000 for up to 2.5 hours.

Parisian Tea Room: For a Tea Party with a Twist

You can hold a proper high tea at the brand new Parisian Tea Room (opens September 10), the decor of which is inspired by owner Karen E. Lozner’s visits to tea rooms in the French capital. The Green Room, Jane’s private space, holds 40 guests for a seated, three-hour party. For $45 per person, everyone will get a starter, main course, family-style sides, coffee, tea, juice, & soda. The events coordinator will work with you to customize and personalize your menu. There is no shortage of delicious entrees; we recommend including the Farm House Popover, featuring scrambled eggs, smoked ham, Gruyère and caramelized onions or the Vanilla Bean French Toast on the menu. Note: There is no room rental for a weekend brunch event, but there is a $2,600 minimum to be met before taxes and fees.

Suppose you want your baby shower in NYC to have that certain je ne sais quoi (in this case, effortlessly chic rustic French charm), head to Maman. The cafe/bakery has numerous NYC locations that host events. Its newest, Maman King (pictured above), is the largest Maman location yet! You’ll find others in Tribeca, Soho, Greenpoint, Nomad, Cobble Hill and the Upper East Side; Marche Maman on Centre Street has an intimate outdoor garden space. In addition to the romantically charming decor, you’ll dine on delectable French bites and pastries, which can be served family style or as finger foods. Brunch, lunch, and dinner are available. The Crosby Street Hotel Sculpture Courtyard

Book The Crosby Street Hotel’s Sculpture Courtyard for a genuinely luxurious yet intimate experience with European flair. The Soho Hotel’s serene space features a tall organic tree sculpture, suspended pendant lights, and the greenery of a mix of small trees and shrubs, including magnolia, hydrangea and other native plantings. Private events, held from noon to 4 p.m., are capped at 25 guests, and there is a food and beverage minimum of $95/person. Rates are $6,000 for weekdays and $7,500 on weekends. Sunday in Brooklyn

Home to some of our favorite pancakes (and a happening brunch scene), Sunday in Brooklyn also has several event spaces ranging from casual to refined funky, and you can host a party for as few as nine people and as many as 200. Choose from an intimate private dining room for 16 on the third floor, a second-floor sunroom (for 50 people, pictured), a second-floor rooftop covered garden (more casual) and more. Brunch is served family style, with creative takes on hearty classics, starting at $45 per person (unlimited drip coffee included); beverage packages are offered separately. And yes, you can add on the famous malted pancakes.

This sweet Lower East Side flower shop will host your baby shower in NYC on-site or come to you. You can host a gathering of up to 24 people in the shop, with the option of catering from the equally chic cafe, Maman (see above). Add on an activity such as making floral crowns, terrariums, seasonal bouquets and more, as well as botanically-inspired favors and memorable decor. Showers include a staff member to assist with setup and lead the class. 

Showers are two hours, and if on-site, are $900 (outside of business hours) and $2,000 during business hours. Off-site showers are $1,250 with a 20 percent delivery fee.

At Sprinkles, $900 will get you two hours, four dozen full-sized cupcakes, or six dozen mini cupcakes, and you can choose to have them frosted or unfrosted. If you choose the unfrosted option, you can select up to three cakes and frostings and host a frosting party upstairs! If you’d like to add on any additional time, the rate is $100 per hour. Sprinkles doesn’t provide any food or beverages, but you can bring any outside food or drinks or even have them delivered to the store. But before you poopoo the idea, check out Brooklyn Winery’s beautiful private space. This boutique urban winery in Williamsburg has a rustic setting decorated with antique glass candle holders and vintage china. The venue offers two packages: The Afternoon Bites menu, which is well-suited for a cocktail-style event, and the Afternoon Luncheon, which features a more traditional lunch service of salads and sandwiches. You’ll also enjoy some of Brooklyn Winery’s best reds and whites. The space holds anywhere from twenty to 160 people, and you can reserve it for up to three hours. Throwing a baby shower doesn’t have to break the bank. These NYC spots are perfect if you want to host a casual, free outdoor event. 

Mad. Sq. Music

Is the mom-to-be a music fan? Get a small group together and spend an evening at Madison Square Park listening to some of the world’s top performers. The Oval Lawn Series is held on Wednesday evenings all summer and features a mix of genres. If you’re throwing a Fall shower, The Studio Series is held on Saturday afternoons all autumn and includes folk, blues and Americana acts. The concert is entirely free. Just make sure you arrive early so that you can snag a good spot.

This city has no shortage of parks; many are perfect for hosting a picnic lunch. This lush, grassy lawn with unique stone seating and a charming view of the Hudson is one of the best for a laid-back outdoor shower. It’s still not well-known, so it doesn’t get as crowded as the Sheep’s Meadow or other popular spots. Plus, it offers ample room for younger guests to run around. The dads will volunteer to take the kids next door to Chelsea Piers for adult-only events. If you need to create a menu, nearby Chelsea Market is full of gourmet eateries and bakeries.

Families with younger children will appreciate the numerous attractions and activities for kids in Palm Springs. From the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, and the Palm Springs Air Museum. The Best Things to Do in Palm Springs with Kids

1. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens

For an up-close look at some real desert critters, this zoo plus botanical garden focuses on wildlife from North America and Africa. You can tour exhibits like a replica of a Northeast African village and get personal with some Nigerian dwarf goats. The new Rhino Safari is a spot you'll definitely want to visit and it's right near the giraffes (pay $8 for a chance to feed them!). 

Catch some knowledgeable animal chats, feed the giraffes, ride the endangered animal carousel, and explore the vast array of trails that loop through the Sonoran Desert (FYI: the trails are closed in the summer). And finally, plan to spend at least 30 minutes checking out one of the best outdoor G-scale model train exhibits we've ever seen.

Good to Know: Arrive early, when it’s still cool out, you’re likely to catch more animals in action (they prefer to lounge around when the sun’s high in the sky) except for nocturnal animals like the big cats, who tend to come out closer to sunset. When it gets hot, head to the air-conditioned Discovery Center.

2. Cabazon Dinosaur Museum

This roadside attraction is impossible to miss on your way into Palm Springs, but we recommend reserving this stop for when you are on your way out of town, headed back to Los Angeles. Touted as the world’s biggest dinosaur museum, you can check out giant robotic dinosaurs (don’t worry, they’re more kitschy than terrifying) for a fee. Let the little ones climb into the mouth of a huge model T-Rex (now in themed paint-suits!), ride the animatronic Brontosaurus, and then search through the sand at the Dino Dig to win a prize.

Good to Know: Stop by on a Sat. or Sun. between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., to score a dinosaur-themed ice cream treat from The Wafflesaurus Truck.

3. Joshua Tree National Park

The twisty tree shapes, Cholla cactus forests and blobby boulders in Joshua Tree make wonderful Dr. Suess-style memories for your kids. For a quick day trip, stick to the exhibitions along the main roads. We recommend entering via the south entrance and exiting via the west entrance (or vice versa). This way you can hit up all the hot spots and stop for some hiking along the way. We especially love stopping at the White Tank Campground and hiking to Arch Rock. It is a super easy hike and there were tons of boulders for climbing. 

Good to Know: You'll want to make sure you have gassed up your car before you head to the park as gas stations are few and far between near the park entrances. Bring food, water and sunscreen with you, check the weather before you go and do yourself a favor and pay your entrance fee online in advance. You'll save yourself a major headache and avoid the line at the park entrance. If you're looking for the quintessential Joshua Tree photo opp, you'll want to know that most of the official Joshua trees are located near the west entrance (side note: they aren't even trees at all, just a tree-like version of the yucca plant).

4. Footgolf

That's not a typo—footgolf is a thing and almost any age can play making this a must-do for a family-friendly activity in Palm Springs. Rather than swing a club, you kick around a soccer ball and try and make it into the 21"-sized holes. It's golf crossed with soccer if you will. You can rent soccer balls on site (no need to bring your own) as well as a golf cart—which let's face it, is half the fun for the little ones.

5. Take a Windmill Tour

You've seen that giant windmill farm in the Coachella Valley, en route to Palm Springs plenty of times, but how much do you really know about the iconic site? For $49 per car (up to five people) you can take a self-guided driving tour and learn how windmills work, why there are so many in the desert, and how much electricity they produce. The tour consists of 10 stops, with two additional (optional) stops off property.

6. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Even pool-obsessed kids can sometimes have enough sunny splash time. Try a favorite, midday break with a change of scenery and climate. This tramway, built in the 60s, will take you and yours 2.5 miles above the desert floor into the San Jacinto mountains and the snowy wilderness awaiting at the top. Kids will love the rotating tram, which guarantees spectacular views no matter where you’re seated. There are dining options at the top so don't worry if your brood gets hungry.

If there is snow, you can have a snowball fight, go sledding, snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing before descending back to the balmy poolside oasis of your hotel. Even when it's not snowy, it's a lot cooler at the top, and fun for kids to explore the hiking and walking trails, and take in the jaw-dropping views.

Altitude sickness can occur so pay attention to your body, drink lots of water and if you or your kids are afraid of heights, this may not be the experience for you. It's not for the faint of heart but totally worth it once you get to the top.

Expected to Reopen 2023: Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert

While the museum has been forced to close due to the pandemic-related challenges, the plan is to reopen the museum in 2022 through community support and fundraising efforts. Go here first thing in the morning for an authentic diner that delivers a fantastic breakfast. The coffee is strong and the pancakes are fluffy (the kid's Cub Cake is too cute!). Go early since lines can form out the door but lollipops are handed out with a smile for all. If you can stand the wait, get the German Pancake. There’s a reason everyone raves about them.

Bid on one of three stunning dolls for a good cause. American Girl announced it has again teamed up with Swarovski crystals to create three one-of-a-kind collector dolls just in time for the holidays. The gorgeous gowns and complementary accessories took Swarovski couturiers over 330 hours to design and hand embellish more than 5,000 Swarovski crystals and crystal beads in 24 colors.

The American Girl Collector dolls will be auctioned off starting today through Nov. 25, 2020, at Americangirl.com/auction. The First Responders Children’s Foundation Toy Express program will receive 100% of the auction net proceeds. This program is designed to spread joy to children of first responders across America during the 2020 holiday season. The bidding for each American Girl Collector doll starts at $5,000.

“As the holidays approach, we know it’s more important than ever to show our gratitude to our country’s dedicated First Responders who have contributed and sacrificed so much to help our friends, families, and communities this year,” said Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl. “We’re pleased to donate the proceeds of these three exquisite one-of-a-kind 2020 collector dolls, plus thousands of Mattel toys, to First Responders Children’s Foundation to say thank you to these hard-working frontline heroes and bring some much-needed holiday sparkle to their children and families.”

In addition, Mattel and American Girl are donating more than $1,000,000 in retail value of toys to the foundation’s Toy Express program, including American Girl’s renowned 18” dolls and other popular Mattel products from Hot Wheels, Barbie and Mega Bloks. The toys will be distributed to thousands of first responder families nationwide through the end of the year.
