This popular event is back just in time for spring cleaning

Is it time to upgrade your kiddo’s car seat? With safety regulations changing to encourage parents to keep their children rear-facing as long as possible, you may find yourself wanting to snag a new car seat for the long haul. Luckily, it’s time for the bi-annual Target car seat trade-in event!

From April 16-29, shoppers can drop off their old car seats in designated drop-off boxes located near Guest Services at most Target stores (in-store drop-offs only!). In exchange, you’ll get a coupon to use through the Target app or target.com/circle for 20% off one new car seat, stroller, or select baby gear, such as play yards, high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers that can be used both in-store and online.

Target

Target will accept and recycle all types of car seats, including infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, and even car seats that are expired or damaged. Not only do you get a great deal on a new item, but you’re also helping to create less waste as Target’s partner, Waste Management, will recycle materials from your old car seats.

Additionally, you’ll be ensuring that other parents are not buying second-hand car seats that could be well past their expiration date or damaged from an accident from online marketplaces.

Since the program began in 2016, over 2.19 million car seats and 32.9 million pounds of car seat materials would otherwise end up in a landfill. The bi-annual event is part of Target’s larger initiative, Target Forward, which seeks to eliminate waste and enhance sustainability practices.

So if you’ve got that old car seat sitting around that isn’t accepted through your own curbside pickup or has expired, head for the Target car seat trade-in event starting Apr. 16. The environment will thank you.

There are a lot of options available when choosing convertible car seats and all-in-ones. Certain brands top parents’ lists for safety and comfort, and there’s good reason that they lead the industry. In this guide to noteworthy new releases and the highest-rated brands in convertible car seats, you’ll find convertible car seats with load legs, the best car seats for hot weather, and more.

photo: Evenflo

Important Guidelines:

  • Purchase your convertible car seat no later than your child’s first birthday, according to Consumer Reports.
  • A convertible car seat can be installed forward-facing or rear-facing, but experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend you keep it rear-facing for safety as long as possible. Some states require rear-facing until your child’s second birthday.
  • You can use a convertible car seat from birth, or you can start with an infant car seat and then switch to a convertible before your child’s first birthday. An infant car seat lets you remove the seat from the base and move between the car, stroller and other locations without waking a sleeping baby. But it is an additional expense.
  • Some convertible car seats are marketed as all-in-ones, 5-in-1s, 4-in-1s or 3-in-1s, meaning they convert from an infant seat into a convertible car seat and then a booster seat, extending the time you can use them.

Our mom tester loved that this clever car seat rotates 360 degrees (with a simple lift tab mechanism) to make it easier to get your child in and out of the car. No more awkwardly reaching into the car to get your child buckled in, or bonking your baby's head trying to take them out! When it's time to go from rear-facing to forward-facing, just give it a spin; no need to reinstall. A helpful indicator lets you know when the seat is firmly locked into position. It then converts to a booster seat for up to 10 years of use (4-120 pounds). On-the-go recline and 14 headrest settings mean a more comfortable ride for your little one, and two cup holders give you lots of room for cups, snacks or toys. You just spin it around. This car seat comes complete with a load leg to stabilize the seat and reduce crash forces in the event of a collision. The SensorSafe technology in the harness's chest clip alerts you if your child becomes unbuckled while driving, the back seat's temperature gets too hot or other unsafe conditions occur. Road Trip Checklist for Babies & Toddlers

The Best Baby & Toddler Feeding Tools

Photo: VisionBalm

When people think of kid-food, choices like mac and cheese and chicken fingers are often top-of-mind. Yes, those foods are delicious and often well-accepted by little foodies, and I feed them to my daughter on occasion as well.

Being a registered dietitian and mom, I try and find a balance between serving my five-year-old foods that she loves (brownies make the top of her list) and foods that I know she needs for health benefits (and she also loves). And while my list of “mom-approved” foods is long, there is one that is always prioritized: Seafood.

My daughter gets seafood on her dinner plate two times a week—the amount that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends children consume. But my rationale doesn’t end at simply wanting to follow the guidance of the USDA. Over the years, more and more data has come out that highlights just how impactful two servings of seafood per week can be to little ones—enough to convince me that it is a must-have in my home.

Eating Seafood Helps Support Strong Growing Bones

When kids are chowing down on seafood options like salmon, they are getting a boost of vitamin D, a nutrient that supports bone health and is not found in many other foods. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which can in turn support healthy bones and teeth.

Additionally, the lean protein that seafood provides helps support bone health as well as your child’s overall growing body.  Think of the salmon, tuna, or shrimp on your kiddo’s plate as bone-booster during the time in their life that they need it most.

Eating Seafood Can Help Boost Brain Development

When they say you are what you eat, that rule certainly applies to brain health. And when specifically looking at kids, eating seafood has been shown to directly impact their brainpower.

When choosing seafood options that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like farm-raised salmon, your child may end up literally having a bigger brain—which is a good thing! Also, data suggests that kids who eat fish at least once per week may do better in school. Fish consumption has also been linked to higher IQs (about 4.8 points higher than non-fish eaters) and improved reading skills. So, along with making sure your kid gets quality sleep and does their homework, including fatty fish in their diet can be an important part of their weekly routine to help support their academic progress.

Seafood Supports a Healthy Immune System

In these times, supporting a healthy immune system is at the forefront of everyone’s minds—especially since kids are back in school and around all of the potential “ick”. While there are tons of miracle immunity supplements on the market, one overlooked booster is seafood.

Eating seafood options that contain healthy fats and vitamin D like shrimp and salmon have been shown to reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system in the body.

Some varieties of seafood also provide protein, zinc, and vitamin A—all nutrients that play an important role in immune health. So, that salmon patty that you are feeding your family may be the ticket to keeping them healthy during cold and flu season!

How to Get Kids to Eat Seafood

Although the benefits of eating seafood are robust, kids are unfortunately only about 5% of children eat the recommended 2 servings per week of seafood. Hopefully with a little knowledge and know-how, parents will start serving more seafood on their dinner table for a slew of reasons.

Shopping the seafood counter (or frozen section) can feel a bit overwhelming, so here are some tricks to buying the safest, best-quality options. Choose seafood with integrity by looking for the BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices) certified seal. I also recommend serving sustainably raised varieties that are low in mercury and high in omega-3 fats, like farmed salmon from Chile. Opting for seafood that is low in mercury, such as salmon, pollock, flounder, cod, tilapia, and shrimp is particularly important for pregnant women and children.

When feeding your kids seafood, it is important to think about the fact that people (especially children) eat with their eyes first. In other words, the food needs to look good. While plopping a raw oyster on your child’s plate may not be a hit, offering some grilled shrimp with a dipping sauce can be a fun and appealing meal for your little one to enjoy. And making a twist on some classic favorites, like a salmon burger instead of a beef option, can be a simple swap that loads your child up with important nutrients. Lastly, be sure to offer seafood starting at an early to help your child develop a life-long habit that can play a huge role in their overall health and brain development.

Traveling with kids is a ton of work, especially when you have to plan for all the extra gear. Luckily, if you have booster-age kiddos, there’s a new seat in town––and it’s a game changer.

mifold has been around for years, but the new Comfort Grab-and-Go booster ($34.99) next level. Like the original, it’s ten times smaller than regular car boosters but the new version offers a seat cushion that is three times thicker––super important for long car rides.

The mifold is great for traveling abroad, ride-hailing, carpooling and pretty much anytime you don’t want to lug a bulky booster seat with you. The compact size makes it ideal for slipping in a purse, backpack, luggage or even your glove box. Bonus? It makes fitting three kiddos in the backseat a breeze!

The new Comfort Grab-and-Go booster is available on mifold.com or on Amazon in three colors: charcoal gray, ocean blue and royal purple.

12 Ride-On Toys That Will Top Your Elf’s Holiday List

100+ Mom-Invented Products Our Editors Love

Animal Games are an amazing entry-point into dramatic play for kids. When parents ask me about my favorite games to play at home, I often suggest starting with the animal kingdom. Whether they are fuzzy or fierce, animals are a natural springboard for courage and silliness…they are an awesome gateway into that imaginative magic.

I’ll never forget those early days when Nathaniel was learning to ride his scooter: We’d go a half a block and then he’d stop, so tentative! As soon as I talked to him like a mother bunny and called him Peter (rabbit!), he was zooming off to find the berries from Mr. McGregor’s garden. He’d go even faster when I became Mr. McGregor. Once he got the muscle memory and confidence, it didn’t leave him, even when he stopped being a bunny and was just a 3-year-old kid on a scooter.

Ultimately, harnessing the power of imagination is not just great for our kids, it makes parenting easier!

So, with that in mind, here’s a video on ways to use animal games in your everyday parenting and tips on encyclopedia-style books that can take it to the next level.

Animal Games That Will Inspire Your Kid’s Imagination:

The structure of some of our classic Child’s Play NY games lend themselves so naturally to animal games and play:

Theater Games to Engage Creative Play

  • Take an ‘Elevator’ to different environments and jump out as the characters that would inhabit an ocean, desert, jungle, etc (we’ve been watching a lot of Netflix’s “Our Planet” in my house lately, and seems like the first-grade curriculum is now about biomes!).

  • Go to ‘School’ as different animals across the floor and see how the mouse squeaks the ABCs or the Tiger sings Katie Perry’s “Roar”.

  • Play ‘Taxi’ where different animals enter the car with problems to solve and places to be (Executive Function skills at work)!

  • Play ‘Silly Shop’ with an animal shopkeeper hosting various pets coming through to purchase items that they need.

  • ‘Pet Vet’ (but of course!) is a classic where an animal presents their ailment to the doc who helps to magically cure it. Remember to ask how their wound happened so they can develop their storytelling skills. Enlist helpers (siblings!) to be the caring nurse assistants who help with the imaginary treatment!

Gross-Motor Animal Games

  • Create an Obstacle Course and play as if you were an animal.

  • Play ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ in different animal bodies.

  • Set up ‘Red Light Green Light’ with challenges and triumphs for your favorite animals.

If you need a courage booster as you go, use soaring, sneaky, or bouncy soundtracks to help you get in the mood of the animal kingdom and augment any of these animal games!

Props for Animal Games

The thing to remember with all dramatic play is that you already have on hand what you need to transform. But if you are throwing an animal birthday party or want a little more springboard into the make-believe, here are some things I recommend:

  • Animal masks
  • Animal noses

  • Tails

  • Animal ears

  • A little face-paint to make whiskers or blacken a nose!

Above all, don’t forget to have fun, commit, and take risks yourself!  You are modeling silliness and bravery with your kids as you play.

Hope you have an animal-tastic time!
