We’ve got new spins on old classics that are sure to keep your littles full between meals

Nobody tells you when you’re expecting that you might want to consider diverting some savings into a ‘snack trust’ alongside that college fund. As all toddler parents know, snacking is a lifestyle, and it’s seemingly never-ending. Your wallet will weep as your grocery cart piles high with brightly colored packaged snacks and loads of fruit (are there ever enough berries?!)

But all jokes aside, there are ways to make snack time work harder by turning it into a power-packed, energy-boosting bridge between meals. And while I appreciate the convenience of packaged snacks, my go-to move as a mom and pediatric registered dietitian is whipping up mini meals that use pantry and fridge staples. It’s not just wallet-friendly; it’s also more sustainable and keeps everyone happy and well-fed. These 7 healthy toddler snacks are perfect for kids who are past the “first foods” stage (think 2-ish and up, depending on the toddler) and great for older kids, too. Loaded with fiber, fats, and protein, they’ll keep your littles fueled and satisfied between meals. Plus, they’re fun!

1. Tea-Party Sandwiches

I usually suggest avoiding distractions at mealtime, but let’s face it, there are moments when your kid just needs some extra comfort from their favorite doll or stuffed animal. How about turning up snack time with a tea party? Encourage your little one to invite their special guest and whip up some mini sandwiches or open-faced toast triangles. The options are limitless but fan favorites include: avocado toasts, peanut butter and jelly, cream cheese and jam, or grilled cheese. If your kiddo needs a more interactive choice, cut bread into strips and offer dips such as hummus, guacamole, or creamy peanut butter. Pop some berries on the table as a centerpiece and you’re snacking like royalty.

2. Yogurt Parfaits

Yogurt is a total kid-pleaser and I totally get why: it can turn into a crunchy, creamy treat with the right toppings. When you’re picking yogurt, opt for the Greek variety because it has extra protein that will keep your littles energized and satiated. Toss in some nutrient-packed mix-ins like diced fresh fruit, whole grain cereal, chia or hemp seeds, and ground nuts. Mix and match these goodies to create yummy parfait-style layers or, even better, let your kids take charge and construct their own delicious creations!

apple sandwiches are an easy snack

3. Apple Sandwiches

Two thin slices of apple can be transformed into all kinds of tasty mini sandwiches. You can fill them with peanut butter and raisins a la ants on a log (which is still a great snack for older kids—peanut butter spread on a celery stick with raisins lining the top), cheddar cheese, or open-face with yogurt and ground nuts. For a sweet surprise, add some mini chocolate chips to the mix. These little sammies pack some protein, so they help your kids stay full for longer and buy you a little more time before “I need a snaaack” starts echoing through the house again.

4. Yogurt Bark

Sometimes the trick is jazzing up the same old snack. Take yogurt, for instance. Instead of serving it with a spoon, a few easy steps can turn it into a yummy bark. Spread a thin layer of yogurt on a baking sheet and add toppings like fresh fruit, freeze-dried berries, mini chocolate chips, ground nuts, chia seeds—almost any toddler-safe ingredient works (and it’s especially soothing if they’re teething). Pop it in the freezer, give it time to freeze solid, and then break it into pieces while you watch your kids go bananas for it!

5. Banana Sushi

This kiddie fave is a sweet spin on classic sushi. Grab a whole-grain tortilla, spread a thin layer of nut butter, plop down a whole banana, and roll it all up. Slice it into cute little rounds and watch your kids run to the table with delight. Your toddler may deconstruct each piece and eat it that way, but that’s totally fine! If you feel like shaking things up a bit, skip the sushi roll and embrace taco vibes. It’s the same drill: add a thin layer of nut butter to a whole grain tortilla but this time add sliced bananas to the center. Fold it up like a taco and snack time just got even more exciting.

6. Fruit Kabobs

Kids are all about bite-sized snacks, and when you add a stick to the equation, you’ve got a guaranteed winner. One of the more entertaining snacks is fruit kabobs. Simply slice up some fresh fruit and cheese and layer them on skewers—or chopsticks, which are better for younger kids since they don’t have pointy ends. Create a fruity rainbow with a colorful variety of strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, and watermelon! For an extra touch of fun, throw in some Cheerios or marshmallows (for older kids, age 4+).

7. Smoothies

Smoothies are the real MVP of quick and easy kid-approved snacks. Throw in some Greek yogurt or nut butter for that protein punch, add chia seeds or ground flaxseed for a healthy dose of fat and brain-boosting omega 3s, and go wild with fruits and veggies. Opt for mild-tasting veg like spinach or zucchini – you’ll get all the good stuff without compromising flavor. Want to win Mom of the Year? Add some dragon fruit to turn your concoction a cartoonish shade of pink.

These Amazon snacks will keep the whole family fueled

There’s nothing kids love more than asking for snacks. Except maybe slime. But especially over the summer, “can I have a snack?” is the song that’s sung in all our homes. Somehow, during the out-of-school months, kids work up the appetite of hard-working farmers and going to the grocery stole daily is just unbelievably inconvenient. Luckily, Amazon comes to the rescue once again. These Amazon snacks aren’t just really good, they’re also easy to order and have on your doorstep (which is especially good when it’s too hot to want to do anything). Plus, they’ll be great for school lunch packing in a few short weeks. While you’re shopping for pool toys and SPF, throw a few of these ultra tasty Amazon snacks into your cart (and snag a few for yourself).

We love the fact that this requires us to throw stuff away

Over 100 years ago, Maria Montessori changed the world with her inspirational education philosophy focused on the curiosity and dignity of young children. Known for its peaceful environments, organized spaces, and clever materials that encourage hands-on learning in everything from practical life (think sweeping and getting dressed) to math and literacy, studies have linked Montessori environments to higher math and literacy skills.

Bring that philosophy home with a Montessori playroom: Imagine everything having a place and including beautiful things that inspire focused, engaged play for minutes—or even hours—on end, basically, a parent’s dream. To help make it happen, we’ve created a step-by-step guideline.

Set the Tone

shelves in a montessori playroom
Carrie Allen via Unsplash

Simple, clean, beautiful, and child-focused: that’s what you’re working towards when you create a Montessori playroom. Think natural materials, light colors on the walls, sturdy wooden furniture, a soft rug, bright sunlight, and a calm atmosphere.

As you plan your room, build a cozy corner with pillows or cushions for dreaming and book reading, designate a space for active play, and include easy-to-access shelves at the child level.

The best Montessori environments nurture curiosity and independence by design. Everything starts with the child. Nothing’s off-limits, and materials (the Montessori word for toys, art supplies, and everything else used to promote learning) always have a designated place so children can take things out and put them back again, all by themselves.

As you put together your playroom, think about what your child will be able to see and reach: a book basket at their level is better than a high shelf, as is an art display that shows their newest masterpiece where they can see it.

What to Ditch

iStock

First step: kick the clutter. We recommend stocking your space with a few well-made toys and a bin of books. Box up plastic gadgets with missing parts, and toss the free toys that came with chicken nuggets. There’s no need for expensive screens or toys with buttons, batteries, or remotes. Montessori philosophies emphasize real over imaginary, so instead of animated characters, consider picking puzzles or books that feature realistic drawings of animals and plants.

Put away toys your child has outgrown or tricky games he’s not ready for yet. A Montessori playroom will look different for a two-year-old than for a five-year-old. Once your child has mastered a material—like zipping the zippers on a dressing frame, a Montessori work made to help kids learn to dress themselves, move it to a storage closet and put something fresh in its place. Plan to rotate toys in your Montessori space every few months.

Furniture and Furnishings to Add

IKEA furniture is great in a Montessori playroom
IKEA

Wooden shelves keep your Montessori playroom organized and streamlined. We like Ikea’s low wooden shelves paired with woven baskets and bins.

If you have space, bring in furniture that gives kids a chance to climb and use their big muscles. The Pikler triangle is a Montessori-inspired climber that can be adjusted as your child grows.

A soft rug that invites your child to settle in and explore Montessori materials on the floor creates a peaceful, cozy space. You might also add in a child-sized table and chairs for snack time, painting, or writing, like these.

Stocking Your Toy Shelf

Montessori classrooms have five areas: language, math, practical life, sensorial and cultural studies. A Montessori-inspired playroom can incorporate items from these areas, depending on your budget, how closely you want to stick to Montessori principles and your child’s interests. Whatever you pick, choose quality over quantity, and wood, not plastic.

Montessori materials are self-correcting. If you put a puzzle piece in the wrong place, it doesn't fit, so you take it out and try again. If a child stacks graduated blocks in the famed Montessori tower in the wrong order, the tower will tip over—the child tries again until the tower stays up. Whether it's the tower, a simple shape puzzle for infants or toddlers, or an animal puzzle for older kids, the best Montessori-inspired materials are sturdy and teach by design.

If you’re overwhelmed with the idea of stocking your playroom, check out the subscription kits like LOVEVERY which pack up age-based materials in a single box.

More Small Stuff to Add

There are more beautiful, practical, and high-quality materials to bring into your space:

A set of wooden blocks are a must for a Montessori playroom. They’ll grow with your child since they do everything from help babies work on grasping hold of things to four-year-olds building epic skyscrapers.

Preparing for everyday life, from getting dressed to cleaning up, is key in Montessori environments for toddlers and preschoolers. In your playroom, stash a pint-sized broom and dustpan in a corner and add dressing frames. Other practical-life materials include a small glass pitcher and glasses for pouring water and tweezers and scissors to build fine motor skills.

Preschool-aged kids are ready for hands-on methods of learning letters and practicing writing. Sandpaper letters like these are common in Montessori classrooms, or you can choose a Montessori-ish material like this wooden letter puzzle from Melissa & Doug. Add paper and pencils with a child-sized clipboard, thick watercolor paper, and a nice set of paints.

The good news? Not everything for a Montessori playroom comes from a store. Outside items like shiny rocks or daisies for flower arranging (a popular Montessori activity) make for affordable additions.

Indoor or out, there are plenty of activities to keep your family busy in the new year!

A new year and a new month are just around the corner. If you’ve resolved to find amazing new adventures with your kids, we’ve got ideas—one for each day of the month, in fact. In between your snowy sledding adventures and your busy back-to-school schedules, try one of these family activities that’s anything but boring.

1. Celebrate the New Year at a National Park (psst…entrance fees are waived on January 16 because it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day). These popular parks have the outdoor bells and whistles families love or try a little-known park for a change of scenery.

2. Looking for other ways to celebrate 2023’s arrival with the kids? We’ve got family friendly ideas you can do at home.

3. Ditch your family’s New Year’s resolutions for new routines, instead. It’s a great way for kids (and parents!) to set and keep goals all year long.

4. Break out winter activity sheets for a quick family activity during the witching hour.

7. If an art cabinet clean-up is one of your New Year's resolutions, here’s how you and the kids can use old crayons to make stunning art.

8. If you ask us, January should be all about soups and stews that are super-easy to make.

With kids home for the summer, the snacking seems to be endless (but isn’t it always?!). Finding a balance between “fun” food choices and eating healthy foods is high up on the list of daily fights we face. In particular, getting them to eat the foods known to be good for those active minds is a huge struggle (but if you’re lucky enough to have a kid that loves salmon and steamed broccoli, good for you!). For the rest of us, our kids are probably not getting the daily nutrients they need for healthy brain development. Good news: Help is on the way! Two dads who were on the same struggle bus created Brainiac® after discovering that their kids weren’t getting enough of the right brain nutrients from their daily meals.

Brainiac® Snacks are the greatest parenting hack: familiar healthy snacks kids love, powered with a blend of super nutrients for developing brains. Read on for five reasons why Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezers are the solution you need to keep your kids healthy as they return to school.

Brainiac® makes snack favorites like Fruit Pouches, Bars and Yogurt packed with brain-boosting nutrients for the whole family.

Each Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezer is packed with 160mg of Omega-3 DHA/EPA, 120mg of choline and 25mg of Vitamin C, 100% of the recommended daily intake for Vitamin C for kids ages 4-8.*

1. Food for Thought: Support Memory, Focus, Learning & Attention

Some food facts coming your way: Just like we need calcium for strong bones and protein for healthy muscles, our brains need Omega-3s and choline—the key nutrients in every Brainiac snack!

  1. Omega-3 DHA: DHA is an essential building block of brain cells and makes up 15% of a child’s brain. It's critical for maintaining normal brain structure, function and metabolism. It also helps with memory formation and has been shown to improve cognition including reading performance, focus and verbal learning.
  2. Omega-3 EPA: The body doesn’t produce EPA on its own so it’s crucial we consume it through diet. Omega-3 EPA helps reduce inflammation in the brain and helps improve mood.
  3. Choline: Choline is critical in developing neurotransmitters in the brain and is shown to improve memory and learning.

Try Brainiac® today and get one Free 10-Pack when you buy a 10-Pack with this coupon at a Walmart Supercenter near you. Click here to learn more!

2. Brain Food Is Hard to Get (...Really Hard)

Chances are even if you don’t have picky eaters, your child likely isn’t getting the daily brain nutrition they need for a thriving, happy and healthy mind. That’s because these important nutrients are really only found in things like fatty fish, liver, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and eggs—a lot of the foods on kids' "yuck" list. In fact, most children in the U.S. are only getting 20% of the recommended adequate daily intake of Omega-3s and two-thirds of the recommended amount of intake of Choline (*based on guidance by the World Health Organization and National Institute of Health).

Just one Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezer provides as much Omega-3 DHA as a kid’s serving of salmon and as much choline as two cups of broccoli. So if you have the time (and energy!) to go through the motions of cooking an entire meal we applaud you, but for all of those other days, you can now grab a Brainiac pouch!

Want to try Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezers? Click here to get a free sample.

3. Portable, Healthy (Tasty) Snacks

Ever just throw a fish fillet in your bag and go? (We don’t recommend this.) Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezers are not only packed with brain nutrients but also don’t have any added sugar (or low, natural sugar), have natural ingredients and are easy to throw in a bag or a lunchbox for school and take on the go for all of your summer trips or soccer games.

4. Not Just Another Squeeze Pouch

Most applesauce pouches are just smashed apples (so not the worst snack by any means, but kind of empty calories) but Brainiac pulls double duty. Brainiac® Applesauce Squeezers not only provide immunity-boosting Vitamin C but they add their proprietary BrainPack to each pouch—160 MG of Omega-3 DHA/EPA and 120 MG of Choline which is the equivalent Omega-3s as one kid’s serving of salmon and the same amount of choline as two cups of broccoli.

Try Brainiac® today and get one Free 10-Pack when you buy a 10-Pack with this coupon at a Walmart Supercenter near you. Click here to learn more!

5. Doing Good for All Brainkind

Shopping for high-quality fatty fish and fresh vegetables can be expensive. Brainiac® is committed to supporting communities and making brain food accessible to all. They’ve joined forces with Partnership for a Healthier America, Michelle Obama’s non-profit organization, and a portion of all Applesauce sales are donated to PHA to help fight food inequity.

And don’t worry, no FOMO here—Amazon has our backs because if you have a Fire Kids tablet, you can upgrade through the Amazon Trade-In program with a 20 percent discount. Read on to learn more to help decide which tablet is suitable for your little techie!

Fire Kids Pro Has a More Mature Look, Both Have the Same Power

The all-new Fire Kids Pro tablets for kids ages 6-12 come with a 7-inch, 8-inch HD or 10-inch HD screen. You can expect these new tablets to look less bulky than the original line for younger kids. The protective case included is slimmer (dare we say, cooler?), and the home screen looks more like the one you'd use.

The new generation of Fire HD 10 Kids tablet (ages 3-7) is available with a 10-inch HD. It boasts up to 12 hours of battery life and USB-C for charging so easy charging for little hands. Bonus: It includes a kid-proof protective case in three cheerful colors to choose from. Like its big brother, this case also has a handy-dandy kickstand to prop up the tablet—ideal for traveling, schoolwork, or just chillaxing!

Same Smart(er) Web Browser, More Open Experience for Older Kids

More independence for them with less worry for you: The Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids web browser includes different settings that give you flexibility for your kids if you choose open but filtered access to the web or access to only hand-selected websites and videos. Now they can explore on their own with guardrails and older kids can research for a school project or just chill out with a favorite movie.

Profiles with Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablet offer customizable controls, with the Fire Kids Pro provides three levels of restrictions: limited, moderate and full access at device set-up. Parents can set and adjust the level of access with different features, such as web browser and digital store access, at any time on the Parent Dashboard. For the Web Browser, built-in controls help filter out inappropriate sites, and you can block specific sites as you see fit.

Both tablets offer access to the (brilliant) Parent Dashboard! Here you can set time limits, see what sites they're visiting and for how long, establish learning goals, set a bedtime, block or allow specific sites and more—all remotely so you (are still) the boss.

Both Get a One-Year Subscription to Amazon Kids+, With Expanded Content for Older Kids

Both the Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids come with one year of Amazon Kids+ with access to over 20,000 books, movies, TV shows and other kid-friendly content curated by Amazon—wow. That is a massive amount of content, and we are impressed!

The Amazon Kids+ subscription provides access to even more content to fit any picky older kids' tastes. Older kids can choose from thousands of apps, songs, Audible books, games, including Teen Titans Go and Asphalt 8, books like Keeper of the Lost Cities and Chronicles of Narnia, PG and PG-13 videos hand-selected by the Amazon Kids team, plus educational content from National Geographic, Rabbids Coding, LEGO® and more.

Fire Kids Pro Features a Digital Store

In addition to expanded Amazon Kids+ content, Fire Kids Pro tablets include access to a digital store so kids can request apps like Disney+, Spotify, Minecraft, Zoom and more. Once their request is sent, parents have the final say, approving purchases and downloads.

Fire Kids Pro Has Video & Voice Calling(!)

With Fire Kids Pro, kids can stay in touch by making and receiving voice and video calls over Wi-Fi! This feature allows kids to call from the tablet to approved contacts with an Alexa-enabled device or the Alexa app. Parents have to approve the contacts and have visibility into calling history. Now kids can easily chat with friends to collaborate on homework or stay in touch with family, all while parents have peace of mind on who they can chat with. Kids can make announcements like "I'm done with my homework" from the tablet to Alexa-enabled devices at home—pretty cool, Amazon!

Both Give You Control, With More Flexibility Within Levels of Control With Fire Kids Pro

Both versions include parental controls so you can customize your kid's experience, no matter where you are! With Amazon's Parent Dashboard, you can control options from anywhere and make changes to access, view their activities, set time limits and more, all through your desktop or mobile phone without touching the tablet. With the "Learn First" feature, grown-ups can block access to games and cartoons until after educational goals are met. With both the Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablet, you can let your kids explore without stressing about what they're doing and where they're going because you are in control of it all (but that can be our secret... ).

With Fire Kids Pro, parents can be flexible with parental controls, adjusting their preference on different features as kids age up. It makes this device super flexible, fitting all types of parenting styles and meeting kids changing needs through a wide range of stages between the ages of 6-12.

Both Offer a Worry-Free Guarantee!

Worried about drops and bumps with kids? Don't be. Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablets come with a sturdy case in cool colors and fun prints to keep it protected. The difference is that the Fire Kids Pro looks more "adult" with a slimmer, more streamlined case. For both editions, the case is genius. They each feature a built-in kickstand which is ideal for hands-free video-watching, game-playing, and more. The best part? All Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablets include a two-year worry-free guarantee; if it breaks, return it, and Amazon will replace it free—you just can't go wrong here.

Although we don’t always want them to remember everything (kids have a knack for recalling the most desperate of our negotiation tactics), brain boosting memory games are one of the best way to keep little minds busy and sharp as a tack to boot. Read on for our faves for every situation, from an old-school game night to impromptu activities to do on the go.

The Classics

Talk about memories. These old-school games are classics for a reason. Kids and adults love them, and they are perfect for a night in with the family.

Simon
Remember when this game was considered a high-tech toy? Mimicking Simon’s color, light and tone sequence may seem simple, but once you advance a few levels, get ready for a serious challenge. Get the kids inspired by watching one off these Simon-masters at work.

Memory
Hasbro came out with the original in the 80s, and since then hundreds of variations have popped up, from Elmo to Frozen to Rescue Bots. There are plenty of DIY ideas out there, but at $5.99 for the real deal, we think it’s worth not having to draw 48 of your own picture cards.

The DIYs

These games can be done anywhere, anytime, as they require little more than a pen and paper (if that!). Oh, and your smarty’s razor-sharp memory, of course.

Remember the Code
This all day game is fun to play anytime, and can turn into a little inside joke between you and your littles. Depending on their age, come up with either a fun phrase or random string of words. Write it on a slip of paper and let them look at it and try to memorize it for up to a minute. Then stick the paper in your pocket and carry it with you throughout the day. Starting just five minutes after you hide it away, turn to your kid and shout: What’s the code?! and see if they can recite it back. Do this throughout the day, and see if and when they are able to remember. Tiny treats for each time they crack the code make this even more rewarding.

What’s Missing?
Gather a number of items around the house and find a cover for the tray. You can use objects likea toothbrush, scissors, a toy, silverware, a rock, keys, etc. Place about 5 or 6 objects on the tray (make sure to use less if kids are little). Cover the tray and place on a table. Allow the kids to look at the tray for a few minutes. Cover the tray back up and take out of the room. Take one object off the tray out of kids’ view and cover back up. Take the tray back to the table and remove the cover. Ask kids which item is missing. Do this until all objects are gone and all kids have a turn of naming a missing object. You can either give points for right answers or remove a child from the game if they answer incorrectly. Go to newkidscenter.com for even more games that you can do with what you already have at home.

Animal Memory
This is a digital version of the classic Memory game, featuring animals. We love that there are no bells and whistles, and that the sounds can be easily disabled. There are 4 levels and 4 themes. Get more info and download it here: commonsensemedia.org

Memory Train
Memory Train is an engaging, fast-moving memory game. It can be helpful for kids who have visual processing issues, as they need to decipher color and shape at a quick pace. It can also be helpful for kids who need help with their working memory, as they need to remember the color shape they saw and identify it with three different paint colors. Before I became a mom, I swore that I would have a child who ate everything, and I would never be “one of those moms” who serves chicken nuggets and grilled cheese sandwiches on repeat. As a registered dietitian, I knew how important a healthy, varied diet is to supporting a child’s growing body and mind. Pre-children, when I watched moms struggling to get their kids to eat anything but fruit snacks, I would wonder why it was so hard to get kids to enjoy nourishing foods. They should gleefully eat everything that is offered to them and be excited to try new foods, right?

Once I became a mom, I finally understood that the struggle is real. Kids can be challenging when it comes to eating a variety of good-for-you foods. When my daughter was a toddler, she chowed down on foods like asparagus and sweet potatoes without complaint. But as she got older, she formed her own opinion and loudly voiced her displeasure when I dared to feed her a green vegetable or whole-grain pasta. Slowly but surely, I started getting into the chicken nuggets/grilled cheese rotation and knew that something had to change.

Kids need nutrients like omega 3s, choline, and calcium for a variety of health reasons. I knew that if I put on my dietitian and mom hat at the same time, I could create some solutions that would help my daughter eat and enjoy nutrient-rich foods without protest. Here are three tips that worked in my house and may work in yours too!

1. Try Smart Swaps.

Kids who eat seafood can reap some amazing benefits, including better performance in school, better quality sleep, and improved immune response. But getting kids to voluntarily eat seafood can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. And good luck trying to motivate your little one to finish up her fish fillet to boost her IQ or help support strong bones. Somehow that doesn’t resonate with young children. Despite my best efforts, my daughter refused to eat any seafood until I started swapping out ground beef for a mild fish like farmed salmon in classic kid-friendly recipes like tacos.

Here’s why this worked. She loves tacos! By choosing a fish with a mild flavor and smooth texture, it blended in with the familiar taco toppings and didn’t overwhelm her. When introducing seafood, the key is to serve it as an ingredient in a dish, not plain. I choose farmed salmon from Chile because it contains no antibiotics or mercury and is affordable. Also, farmed salmon tends to have higher levels of brain-boosting omega 3 fatty acids compared to other fish varieties. Whether I use it frozen or fresh, my daughter will eat it on a hamburger bun, in tacos, as a quesadilla filling, and even added to scrambled eggs. She is happy to eat foods that are similar to her “regular” foods, and mama is happy that she is getting a boost of healthy fats, protein, and hard-to-find vitamins, like vitamin D.

2. Invest in an Air Fryer.

I will admit that I am a sucker for new kitchen toys, and an air-fryer did not disappoint. Like many kids (and adults), my daughter tends to prefer fried foods over baked and grilled. Who can blame her? That satisfying crunch of a French fry or fried chicken nugget is hard to beat. But living off of fried foods isn’t good for anyone, especially kids.

Air fryers are a magical appliance that makes food taste fried without being submerged in fat. Don’t ask me how it works, but it works. I love to use the air fryer to introduce new vegetables and meats to my family. So far, the air fryer has successfully added pork chops, green beans, butternut squash, and zucchini to the (growing) list of foods that everyone will eat.

Using an air fryer, I am able to serve up crunchy “fries” using russet and sweet potatoes, as well as sliced carrots, green beans, and even pickles. Serving them with a dip like a homemade ranch or ketchup adds to the pleasure because kids love dipping food into sauces. My daughter happily crunches away on carrot “fries”, and I have less mom-guilt knowing that my daughter is getting some important nutrients into her growing body.

3. Make Food Fun.

My daughter loves to have a “party platter” for lunch or dinner. I love that it involves little-to-no cooking and is a great vehicle for trying new foods and customizing with nutrients she may be lacking. For example, if I’m trying to boost her dairy intake, there might be a Greek yogurt-based dip or a cheese stick on the platter. If she needs more protein and healthy fat, peanut butter on whole-grain crackers or rolled up turkey slices often make an appearance. My rule of thumb is one fruit, one veggie, a whole grain, and a protein, served with a glass of milk. The trick is to always include one component that is a less familiar food to encourage variety. Here are some of our favorite combos:

  • Whole-grain crackers, turkey roll-ups, red bell pepper slices, hummus, and apple slices
  • Toothpick “skewers” with grape tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, cucumber slices with homemade ranch dressing, and whole-grain pretzels.
  • Fresh pineapple chunks with vanilla yogurt dip, peanut butter cracker sandwiches, and baby carrots

There is something inherently fun about the snack or “party” platters and it is the perfect solution for busy weeknights!

Getting kids to eat a balanced diet is a challenge that even registered dietitians experience. Instead of admitting defeat and investing in a Costco-sized box of mac and cheese, testing out some out-of-the-box kitchen hacks can help your child meet important nutrition needs with little stress and frustration. It may take some trial-and-error, but you will surely find a way to get key nutrients into your child’s diet with a little creativity and know-how.
