Grand Palladium White Sand Resort & Spa | Riviera Maya

Grand Palladium is, through and through, the classic type of all-inclusive resort for families you imagine visiting in Mexico. But while other brands may have gotten too big or crowded, with the quality of food and service inevitably decreasing, these guys do it right. White Sand is one of four resorts on their Riviera Maya compound (sister resorts “Colonial” and “Kantenah” are also family-friendly, whereas the fourth, TRS Yucatan Hotel, is adults-only), which allows guests the unique opportunity of having both an intimate resort feel while being able to access the amenities (restaurants, pools, and more) of the neighboring resorts. If your kids (or spouse!) tend to get bored in one place quickly, this is the perfect answer.

Kids will love the interesting animals they encounter, whether real (there is a large flock of flamingos that live on the property, as well as plenty of cute coatis, iguanas, and more) or “Raggs” (the resort mascots, colorful dog characters that entertain children throughout the resort by singing, dancing, reading stories, and posing for photos)

Fairmont Mayakoba | Riviera Maya, Mexico

The Fairmont Mayakoba underwent a serious makeover that was completed in 2022 and it now has a sleek new beach club, two more restaurants, an adults-only bar overlooking the ocean, two beautiful kids clubs, and freshly redesigned rooms and suites, too. Most notably, it also now includes an all-inclusive option and free dining for children under 5.

Fairmont Mayakoba is hidden in 240 acres of tropical forest, marked by crystal clear waterways and cobbled roads suitable only for walking, bikes, and golf carts. The setting in nature makes it hard to believe you’re only 40 minutes south of Cancún. It feels remote, exclusive, and quiet in the ways you want it to be quiet when you’re on vacation.

Golf carts are the main mode of transportation around Fairmont Mayakoba, which made for lots of fun, and also made you appreciate the grandness of the property. It truly feels like neverending miles of jungle tucked away alongside the Caribbean Ocean. It’s a 3-5 minute ride from the main rooms of the hotel to the beach, which makes even the journey to the beach an adventure.

Nickelodeon Resorts Punta Cana | Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic known for its stunning white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tropical climate. The beaches in Punta Cana are among the most beautiful in the world, with miles of soft, powdery sand and turquoise waters. When it comes to places to stay when traveling with young children, you will 100% want to stay at a resort known for children’s programs and we definitely recommend Nickelodeon Resorts, Punta Cana.

This beachfront property tops our list of best all-inclusive resorts for families as it has direct access to the beach and some of the rooms are literally steps from the beach. The beach is great for walking or frolicking in the waves and is not too far from the pool, the beach bars, and restaurants. The rooms are on the side of the resort closest to the beach, and the waterpark is on the other side. It’s easy to get around the resort with shuttles and golf carts driven by staff and running continuously all day. If you are not experiencing mobility challenges, it’s about a 5-minute walk from the rooms to the waterpark once you’ve familiarized yourself with the layout of the property.

With daily beach and resort activities and many excursions for you to explore, you won’t have trouble staying busy (if that’s your jam). Their family suites have the family in mind, offering kids their own bunk bed and space, even in a shared room. The beach is excellent for long walks. Since Flaming Beach is along Brasilito Bay, the waters tend to be calmer than many other beaches in Costa Rica.

Just a quick flight from the U.S. will get you to these resorts for some well-deserved family time

With its breathtaking cliffs, many nightlife offerings, and beautiful beaches, the Los Cabos area of Mexico is well known as a luxury vacation spot. But amazingly, it’s also the perfect spot for fun family getaways. Both kids and adults will enjoy water activities on the Sea of Cortez, taking in the area’s great location for whale watching, or off-roading in a four-wheeler. And when it’s time to head back to the hotel, staying at an all-inclusive resort can help control spending while keeping everyone occupied when onsite.

Some of Cabo has non-swimmable beaches so you’ll want to check that before you go if that’s high on your list. Here are some of the best all-inclusive resorts we found for families in Cabo.

Parents looking for a little ‘me time’ can explore the adult-only areas or head to the spa for a luxurious pampering session. The resort also features eight heated outdoor pools, a wide beach, multiple eating locations, an optional all-inclusive add-on option, and a family package allowing kids to eat and stay free.

Villa La Valencia Beach Resort

Home to the longest lazy river in Los Cabos, Villa La Valencia Beach Resort has plenty of opportunities for families to relax and get away, whether on the beach or in their rooms. Suites offer private terraces and living areas to help parents keep a routine if needed. At the same time, the onsite mini-mart and in-room refrigerators allow families with smaller children to enjoy meals on their schedules. Other times, everyone can get out and explore the multiple pools, four restaurants, and a lazy river. And remember that everyone needs time to themselves. The kid’s club allows children to create piñatas, take Spanish lessons, and enjoy yoga classes while, for an additional fee, parents can enjoy the couple’s experiences at the Azul Wellness Spa.

Hand over the stress of planning to the experts and you’ll get to enjoy your vacation from start to finish

If you are the travel planner in your family, you know what goes into coordinating everything from flights to airport transfers to excursions once you are there. In the “olden days,” people used to consult an in-person travel agent who would take care of these tasks for them. But with everything available online these days, most travelers take on this somewhat stressful responsibility themselves. There’s a better way.

We enlisted the services of Funjet Vacations to plan a recent trip to the gorgeous all-inclusive Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort & Spa; it could not have been easier. Direct flights, a private airport transfer, an on-site concierge for excursions, and the confidence in knowing that the property we selected was vetted made this option a no-brainer for our family.

Dreams Los Cabos

Dreams Los Cabos

From the moment you arrive at Dreams Los Cabos, you will feel the relaxing vibes take over. Located on the Sea of Cortez, you’ll be just a 30-minute ride from the airport and an even shorter ride to downtown Cabo San Lucas. Have Funjet Vacations arrange your ride from the airport via Amstar so you don’t have to deal with finding a taxi after a long day of travel.

Families can spread out in a suite that comes with a separate kitchen area, balcony, 24-hour room service, and so much more. All-inclusive amenities include access to a number of a la carte restaurants including French and Italian cuisine, seafood, and steak. Get your fill at the breakfast buffet with Mexican favorites and a made-to-order omelet station.

Send your kids to the Explorers Club (more on that below) and head over to the adult’s-only pool near the seafood restaurant. Here you’ll find a quieter zen vibe with another swim-up bar.

You’ll want to note that Dreams Los Cabos is located right on the beach but often the waves are too intense for swimming.

Kids’ Club at Dreams Los Cabos

Dreams Los Cabos

Kids ages 3-12 will flip over all the fun that’s offered at the property’s Explorers Club. From arts and crafts to video games to outdoor water play, the activities available really cater to all ages and interests. If you are lucky, the bungee trampoline and climbing wall will be on the schedule during your visit. Parents who want to have a kid-free evening can drop their brood off for karaoke night, movie night, or everyone’s favorite—the campout on the beach.

Activities at Dreams Los Cabos

two kids watching Mexican dancers at Dreams Los Cabos
Kate Loweth

Nightly entertainment during our stay ranged from live music near the lobby to a mariachi band that walked through the property. Mexican Night was a highlight with musicians and dancers performing on the main stage by the beach. We loved ending our night with this bit of Mexican culture!

Nightly movies on the beach were also a huge hit with the kids (and adults too). Head down to the sand where they have lounge chairs and popcorn waiting for you to enjoy while you watch family favorites like Puss in Boots.

You’ll find trivia contests, Aqua Zumba, and singalongs taking place throughout the day by the main pool. Download the resort’s app so you know what to expect for the day’s activities.

There are many ways to make your Dreams Los Cabos vacation one you won’t soon forget. We definitely recommend that you book the Balinese Beds during your stay as it will give your family a private area to enjoy the beach views with your own plunge pool. You’ll have a dedicated server to bring you margaritas and virgin piña coladas along with fish tacos and guacamole. Head up to the second floor of your private space for some lounging in the sun. You can even cue up your favorite show or play your playlist through the speakers.

The property’s on-site spa offers massages, body treatments, and manicures. Spend your afternoon enjoying the sauna and steam room after your session. For the most indulgent experience, book a massage on the beach so you can enjoy the crashing waves while you truly relax.

Another next-level option offered at Dreams Los Cabos is their Le Petit Chef interactive dining experience. This experience was really delightful as it told the story of a tiny chef who prepared each course for you from salad to dessert. Your meal comes to life as you watch this tiny chef gather veggies, swim through the sea, and build an igloo. Offered at the Italian and French restaurants for an additional fee, we definitely recommend you book this with the concierge when you visit.

We’ve hit up the park, aquarium, and the best gift shops to bring you the inside scoop on making your trip to the brick capital the best ever.

LEGOLAND

1. LEGOLAND is open! You'll need to have a reservation and purchase tickets in advance to get in. Check out the packages here.

2. MINILAND San Diego is open. Don't skip out on a visit to MINILAND, especially now that they've added San Diego to the land. See if you can spot all your favorite locations like the Coronado Bridge, Del Mar Racetrack, and PETCO Park.

3. Get the app! Before you even pack for your trip, download the LEGOLAND app onto your phone. It has an interactive map to aid in exploring the park, gives your ride wait times, a height guide for rides, directions, and even a car finder to help you keep track of where you've parked.

4. Shop without a care (or a carry). The stores at LEGOLAND have one of the largest selections of LEGO and LEGOLAND products in the world! There are a couple of bigger stores closer to the entrance of the park, but you can purchase from any of the shops throughout LEGOLAND, and they will have your item(s) waiting for you when you are ready to leave.

5. Start at the back. Head to the end back of the park upon arrival. Lines for big rides Coastersaurus, Safari Trek, and Fairy Tale Brook are much bigger in the earlier part of the day.

LEGOLAND

6. When to go. Check out the crowd calendar before you book your visit to see how busy the park will be. Our biggest tip is to plan your visit to LEGOLAND while the kids are still in school. Otherwise, you run the risk of enduring crowds. You'll also enjoy milder weather during the months of the school year versus the scorchers in summer. Spring and fall temperatures for Carlsbad, CA typically range between 60 to 70 degrees, perfect for wee-ones making their way around an amusement park. But if a summer trip it is, there are still plenty of ways to keep them cool when the mercury rises.

7. Rent a stroller. If you've got kids that might not make the whole day on foot, save yourself space in the trunk for that giant LEGO set, and just rent a stroller on site. Strollers can be rented on a first-come, first-served basis at The Marketplace in The Beginning. Singles are $17, doubles are $20 and they even have infant strollers ($17).

8. How to get a discount on LEGOLAND tickets. Get your tickets in advance! Besides saving extra cash, pre-purchasing your tickets will also expedite your entry into the park. LEGOLAND offers an array of deals for customizing your theme park experience. You can choose between visiting the amusement park only or combining it with the water park, Sea Life Aquarium, or both. Purchasing your tickets from the LEGOLAND website is also the best choice if you're planning to visit the park for only one day. Costco members can also save big on ticket prices. Check if they have deals online and after you check out, your E-tickets will be sent to you within the hour (Psst ... there's a Costco store just two miles from the theme park if you prefer to purchase your tickets in person). Discounts are also offered to AAA members and Military with ID.

9. Where to stay. If you've got a LEGO maniac, or three, or four in your crew, and you don't mind shelling out the extra coin, then you won't want to miss staying at the LEGOLAND Hotel or LEGOLAND Castle Hotel. Your mini-master builders will go crazy over all of the resort's brick-tastic features including a choice of themed rooms to stay in, early entry to the park, nightly kiddie entertainment, plus a scavenger hunt to look for clues to unlock a treasure chest in your room. There's a huge breakfast buffet, restaurant, and pool, plus the hotel is nearly in the theme park itself—a great option if naps are still on the agenda.

If you want to save cash, but still have easy access to the park then you might want to try the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort. It has its very own entrance at the back of the park (Psst ... this is a great way to score first-in-line for some of the most popular rides), plus you won't have to deal with parking fees or hassles.

The Cassara Carlsbad is another great option that offers both standard rooms and family suites. The fully remodeled and redesigned hotel now has a private pedestrian entrance to LEGOLAND and perfect views of the Carlsbad flower fields. We bet your crew will head straight for the resort's family pool and kiddie splash pad once you arrive.

10. Bring the minifigs. Have you heard about Minifigure trading? If not, we bet you and your little sidekick will think it's the best thing to come along since Emmet's double-decker couch. Just have your kid bring their old minifigures to the park, including all the parts and accessories, and they can trade them up for new ones. Every LEGOLAND employee (Hint: They're called Model Citizens. Get it?) has a super cool LEGO name badge with minifigures fixed onto it. If your tyke wants one of the Model Citizen's guys, they'll gladly trade with them. You'll also find trading posts throughout the park that offer armies of mini-men to trade for, and if your kiddo doesn't have a minifigure for making a switcharoo, there are plenty available for purchase at LEGO stores throughout the park.

11. Get there early! Chances are your brick enthusiasts will be up by the crack of dawn and ready to go before you hit the button on the coffee maker, so why not take advantage of their excitement by heading to the park early? You're likely to score parking that's a stone's throw from the premium spots, plus you will spend less time waiting at the entrance. The best part? Even though LEGOLAND officially opens at 10 a.m., the turnstiles are rolling by 9 a.m., and by 9:30 a.m. some of the rides at the front of the park are already going.

12. Measuring up the rides. Most of LEGOLAND's rides and attractions are geared for the entertainment of kids ages 2 to 12, but if you've got an adrenaline junkie who has already taken on giant roller coasters and scream machines, the park will likely feel babyish to them. Still, there are a few great spots your older crew might try. The LEGO Technic Coaster has you sitting in a four-person car as you twist, turn, and drop.

If you've got Littles tagging along on your adventure you'll want to check how tall they are before you go. Many of the rides have minimum height restrictions starting at 34 inches, and some require an adult or at least a responsible big kid to ride along with. Even if your wee ones fall below the line, there's still plenty of fun to be had—no rides necessary.

13. Use Ride Swapping. If your kiddos find themselves not meeting the height requirement, or they just aren't into thrill rides, parents can use the Ride Swapping system. One parent will ride with the tall enough child, then when the ride is over they can swap right away so the second parent can ride without waiting in the line again.

Karly Wood

14. Avoid the wait with Reserve 'N' Ride. If you think you'll need good tactical maneuvers in order to avoid encountering a meltdown from waiting in long lines, here are a few solutions to try. LEGOLAND offers a Reserve 'N' Ride system, which allows you to hold a spot in line for their most popular rides without having to be in the queue. To set up a Reserve 'N' Ride, check out their website to learn more. When you purchase the pass, you'll get to choose between Express, Deluxe, and Ultimate. Download their mobile app to take advantage of Reserve 'N' Ride.

15. More tips on skipping the wait. To avoid long lines without having to pay reservation fees, you'll need to plan ahead and be prepared to check out some of the non-ride attractions at the park. To start, when you arrive at the resort, head to the back and avoid the buildup for the Coastersaurus and Safari Trek. At mid-day, when the park is at its busiest, you'll want to head into Fun Town and visit some of the area's less popular, but surprisingly enjoyable, attractions, including the LEGO Factory tour, Police and Fire Academy, or DUPLO Playtown. You can also make your way over to the Imagination Zone where your kids will spend hours building and racing their own LEGO car. And don't forget to check out MINILAND, where your pint-sized squirt will love wandering along paths passing world-famous cities and attractions scaled to just about their height.

Kate Loweth

16. LEGOLAND California is a certified autism center. Guests with autism can obtain an Assisted Access Pass from Guest Services located in The Beginning which allows easier access to rides without having to wait in line. You'll also see sensory guides throughout the park that will alert you to noise levels, smells, and other sensory triggers. Consult the Access Guide for additional information about accommodations at the park.

17. The Hideways play area is a great spot to get some energy out. If your little ones have been antsy after waiting in lines for the rides, head to the Hideways play area for some all-ages fun. They can climb, slide, and run to their heart's content while you set up shop in a shady area. The Hideaways is right next to Granny's Apple Fries—a great bribe if you need to get the kids out of there.

Karly Wood

18. Bring a change of clothes. Even if you don't plan to splash around at the water park, you'll want to bring swimsuits, towels, and extra clothes to keep in the car—just in case. Pirate Shores has a few wet rides, a splash pad, and a play structure with mini waterslides and several dowsing features to cool off in when things heat up. If you don't want to carry your gear with you, there are lockers located at Pirate Shores for $10 (Psst ... this is the cheapest in the park), and for a quick dry try one of the family dryers afterward.

19. No outside food and drink. Outside food and drinks are not allowed in the park, but LEGOLAND does make exceptions for dietary restrictions and infants. There is a bag check at the entrance, but the staff typically turn the other cheek if you bring in your own water bottles and a couple of snacks. And speaking of food, you'll likely find LEGOLAND's dining choices are decent by theme park standards with options including pizza, burgers, and hot dogs, as well as some spots for BBQ, Ramen, and healthy snack items. Go ahead and splurge on those Granny's Apple Fries for your crew and don't forget the vanilla cream dipping sauce. They're delish!

LEGOLAND

20. What about the waterpark? Compared to other water parks you may have visited, many of LEGOLAND's slides and features will seem scaled back and probably best for the small fries, but if the hotel or condo you're staying at doesn't have a pool then it's definitely worth getting a Park Hopper pass. Peak hours are between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try for before or after those hours for the most low-key experience. Kids love the lazy river where they can build with soft, oversized LEGO right on their tube, and the CHIMA area will keep them busy for hours as they frolic in the Lion Temple wave pool or slide through the massive crocodile's jaw in Cragger's Swamp. You'll find several spots kids can play with LEGO, which are nice diversions when the park does its routine 10-minute pool break for lifeguard rotations. If you do plan to visit the water park, be sure to check their schedule ahead of time. The pools are typically open from spring break through Labor Day, plus weekends during the fall, but mid-week black-out dates aren't unusual.

21. Don't skip SEA LIFE Aquarium. If you've never been before, the SEA LIFE Aquarium is definitely getting the Park Hopper pass. Although it's a quick trip through the whole thing (typically an hour), it's the perfect size for small attention spans. Most of the exhibits are indoors with the exception of the touch tanks, so it's also a great way to escape warmer daytime temperatures. At the aquarium, you'll see jellyfish, seahorses, eels, and a Giant Pacific Octopus. There's also a large underwater tunnel that wanders through the Lost City of Atlantis, a 200,000-gallon tank filled with sharks, rays, and tropical fish to give you a scuba diver's perspective of these thrilling sea creatures. Kids can learn more about their favorite underwater animals during one of the special Tank Talks or Feeding Times, plus take part in an educational scavenger hunt to earn a special prize when they've found all the clues.

22. Pack extra clothes. Even if you're bypassing the water park, LEGOLAND has plenty of water features that kids won't be able to pass up. If your kiddos find themselves enjoying the several splash pads and play area but don't want to stay soggy, check out the cheapest lockers to stow your stuff, as well as dryers near Pirate Shores.

Try these theme restaurants in Atlanta for an exciting dinner experience you may not expect

Dining with kids is an adventure. And one of the best ways to keep everyone happy and entertained when dining out is to hit up a out-of-the-box restaurant that practically guarantees a tabletop of happy plates (hint: here are some of our other favorite family restaurants tips). From brunch overlooking the world’s busiest airport to dinner inside a real train car—or perhaps pizza served by robots—we’ve got eight theme restaurants in Atlanta that are worth checking out. Find your favorite spots to make a memorable—in a good way—mealtime memory.

1. The S.O.S. Tiki Bar

This Victory Brands restaurant in Decatur is best to visit when the sun is down to catch "all the tiki glow." There are plenty of neon colors, tropical flowers, and bobbling hula dolls during the day, though, so you won't be disappointed.

Insider Tip: If they've been good and let you drink your cocktail out of a giant bird of paradise vase in peace, reward them with an order of Tempur-Oreos for dessert. They're deep-fried Oreos with Nutella or vegan chocolate sauce.

2. Selfie Museum

Glaze your Instagram with a visit to Atlanta’s weirdest museum that combines selfies (or perhaps family photos) with donuts. ‘Hole In The Wall’ is not a full-service restaurant, but you can nosh on delicious donuts and sip tasty drinks while snapping selfies at donut-themed selfie stations.

4. Trader Vic's

Nope, not Trader Joe's. This particular Trader takes diners to poy paradise, with Polynesian-inspired decor, cuisine, and on occasion, entertainment. It's the home of the "original" Mai-Tai, so definitely add that to your order. This particular location in the downtown Hilton has been in operation since 1976, and this tiki bar is definitely high on wow factor for kids and parents, alike.

5. Orient Express

Located on railroad tracks in an old train car, and featuring three different rooms for Chinese, Sushi, and Hibachi, this Vinings staple is loco for kids interested in locomotives. Featuring all the traditional dishes you'd expect, try the hibachi for a little dinnertime entertainment (that doesn't involve an iPad).

6. Bone Garden Cantina

7. 57th Fighter Group

Located at the end of the south runways of the Peachtree-Dekalb Airport, this long-time staple of Atlanta dining will wow your wee air aficionados in a major way. With both indoor and outdoor patio dining, no seat is a bad seat for getting an eyeful of passenger planes taking off and landing at the airport. Decorated in a WWII-era aviation theme, the restaurant even has vintage planes on the property.

Winterland at Gallagher Way has gotten a major upgrade this holiday season—and, for the first time, visitors can step inside Wrigley Field to take part in the festive fun

Whether you’ve never been to Winterland at Gallagher Way or it’s a key spot on your Chicago holiday circuit, this year has big changes (and a much bigger footprint!) that both new and returning visitors will be experiencing for the first time. For those unfamiliar, Gallagher Way is the park right outside the west side of Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs. On game days, it acts as an entryway into the stadium, as well as an area in which ticket holders can spread their legs and watch the game on the 40-foot video screen. On non-game days and outside of baseball season, it acts as a town center with activities and events for all ages throughout the year—from free movie nights, fitness classes, and musical performances.

And for several winters now, this popular section of the Wrigleyville neighborhood has transformed into a beautiful, bustling, North Pole right here in the city.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CkoFGv-PgHR/?hidecaption=true

Christkindlmarket at Gallagher Way

Historically, the centerpiece has been the Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville. Christkindl markets throughout Chicago (the flagship location is at Daley Plaza) are known for their German traditions, including wooden hut structures occupied by vendors of diverse hand-crafted gifts, scrumptious food, and seasonal drink options. Make a bee-line to the raclette stand for the best melted cheese sandwich of your life. Also be sure to pick up a commemorative mug filled with Gluhwein (hot spiced wine) or hot cocoa. You can bring your mug back year after year for a discount on refills, or start a collection of mugs from every year.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClKiqwFLU-s/?hidecaption=true

Up until this year, the Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville has been set adjacent to a sizable ice rink. New this year however, Gallagher Ice Rink has been moved into Wrigley Field along with a number of other fun activities. In its place, a carousel now thrills kids of all ages as it circles under the twinkling lights of the market. The carousel being considerably smaller than the ice rink allows more breathing room for shoppers as they browse through all the stands, take pictures by the imposing Christmas tree, or enjoy the live music and performances just below it.

Winterland at Gallagher Way

Winterland at Gallagher Way is technically located within the hallowed walls of Wrigley Field. You know that feeling you get when you enter a stadium from the dark concourse tunnel . . . when you are momentarily blinded by the light, then happily overwhelmed by all there is to take in, and can just taste the excitement of the crowd? That is the feeling you get walking into Winterland. As you enter from left field, immediately on your right are holiday-themed carnival gaming stations. Straight ahead is the Infield Express train that travels the same baselines as baseball's greats, and a Hot Cocoa Cup ride (akin to a more classic teacup ride) for small children. To the left you'll find a Tilt-a-Whirl (Winter Whirl), a tubing hill (Wintertube), and of course the ice rink.

Ice Skating

The Gallagher Ice Rink is as big as ever, but it's sectioned off for ice bumper cars. Just behind the rink is where you can pick up your rentals and sign a waiver.

Insider Tip: Everyone in your party must get in this line, whether they are getting rentals or not. You still need to sign the waiver and get a bracelet that will allow you on the ice. It's here that you may also obtain an assigned time slot for ice bumper cars. If people in your party have their own skates, they can work on putting them on while someone else waits in line, but they must come back to the line to have their bracelet put on them by a staff member.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClhM8soP7AG/?hidecaption=true

Ice Bumper Cars

Although the ice bumper cars give assigned time slots, plenty of visitors don't realize this and instead line up alongside the arena. Therefore, at your assigned time, you should check in with the attendant to see if you still need to get on the line, or if they can get you on the ice right away.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClJm5RrPY0a/?hidecaption=true

Santa Claus

It's not all ice sports at Winterland: there's even a Santa! Santa's Workshop, located in the lobby of the Premier Entrance (under the marquee) is open through Dec. 18 on Fridays from 3-8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Meeting Santa and taking pictures with your own camera is free, and professional photos are available for purchase.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CkuJFM6vUsz/?hidecaption=true

Additional Amenities

Along the left field wall, private chalets are available for rent, and just above third base there is The Lodge for purchasing food and drinks or warming by the fire pits. Bathrooms are located back in the main concourse. (Christkindlmarket bathrooms are located in the Cubs building next to The Lucky Door.)

Winterland, as a whole, is enveloped in holiday decorations and blaring holiday music. On Thursday nights from Dec. 1-22 at 6 p.m., you can enjoy a free outdoor holiday movie on either the Gallagher Way or Wrigley Field video boards while you walk (or skate!) around.

The combination of Winterland and the Christkindlmarket hits every festive note. Holiday lights? Check. Holiday music? Check. Shopping? Check. Fun activities? Check. Seasonal food and drinks? Check. Santa? Check, check!

Does this all sounds too good to be true?

Costs and Crowds

Well, it isn't without cost. While the Christkindlmarket is still free to walk around, entry into Winterland does cost $5 per person (children under three are free), and each activity, including the carousel in the market, requires additional tickets. Whereas ice skating used to be free if you brought your own skates, it is now $12 to skate and and additional $8 to rent.

An activity ticket costs $4. All the rides and games (except for the ice rink and ice bumper cars) cost one ticket. Rink access is three tickets, skate rental is two tickets, and ice bumper cars are four tickets (that's $16!) for a five-minute session.

Buy tickets online or at the Wrigley Field Box Office on Clark Street. Activity tickets can also be purchased online or once inside the ballpark. Carousel tickets can be purchase with a credit card while standing in line from the attendant, or in the ballpark for use after you leave Winterland.

However, your best bet is to purchase the Peppermint Pack online in advance. This bundle costs $30 and includes your admission into Winterland as well as 10 attraction tickets (a $45 value.)

Interestingly, the cost does not seem to be keeping anyone away. Be aware that it can get exceptionally crowded on the weekends, particularly with mild weather. It is also very important to note that while you can stay inside Winterland as long as you like, there is no re-entry if you leave!

Dates

Winterland runs through Sunday, Jan. 8.
Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville runs through Dec. 31.

Regular hours are:
Mon-Thurs: 3-9 p.m.
Fri & Sat: 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Sun: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

From where to stay on Kauai to what to do on Kauai with kids—this off-the-beaten path destination is an easy-going vacation spot that is great for families and multi-generational stays seeking laid-back vacation vibes or adventures of a lifetime

So you’ve decided to take a trip to Hawaii! Of course that fabulous decision brings about an even harder question: Which Hawaiian island is best for your family? And while there is no bad choice when it comes to family-friendly Hawaiian islands, for those seeking a less commercial-vibe, consistent year-round temps (meaning you’re less likely to get stuck with a frigid weather no matter what time of year you go), gorgeous beaches and coves, and a forested, jungly adventure—Kauai is the definitely the island for you.

what to do in Kauai, Hawaii
Andie Huber

All about Kauai

Kauai is the fourth largest island of the Hawaiian Islands, this under-the-radar tropical destination is also the most northwestern of the major islands, sits about 100 miles off the coast of Oahu, and is by far the most enchanting and relaxing. Kauai is a hidden gem–it feels like a world away even though it's just a six-hour, direct flight from LA. You can also reach Kauai via Seattle, Portland, San Diego and San Francisco non-stop.

What also makes this island so special—it's a melting pot of cultures. There are strong influences felt all over the island—from Japan, China, and the Philippines to even Portuguese influences, there's so much to experience and taste once you get here. Don't miss trying poi—a traditional staple of Hawaiian culture, is a gluten-free, viscous dish made from taro. And of course, don't miss out on ube—a purple yam originally from the Philippines. Unlike traditional sweet potatoes that we know in the states, ube is sweeter and has a slightly nutty, vanilla taste making it great ingredient in desserts, pancakes, malasadas and coffee drinks.

10 Reasons to Stay at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort

1. The Sheraton Kauai Resort's Intimate, Low-Key Yet Luxe Vibe

Much like Goldilocks in the The Three Bears, here's nothing harder to nail than a resort trying to be everything, to everyone, yet kudos to the Sheraton Kauai Resort for getting the vibe here just right.

Thanks to a recent renovation, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the spaces are airy, clean, modern and inviting. Add to that, little nooks and crannies tucked along the property that allows for privacy and feels like you have the place to yourself. With 314 rooms (2 of them suites), the size of the resort is manageable (unlike some resorts that feel like you walk for days). The hotel rooms are also spacious, modern and clean. And the way the resort is situated, you'll get a glorious ocean view, pool view or luxe garden view—all with patios or balconies.

The added bonus of a smaller resort? You can feel comfortable letting your kids wander off to the game room or explore the grounds while you sit and enjoy a drink—and the view.

2. Zero-Entry Pool & Splash Area for Little Kids

The main pool and the little kid's splash pool are connected—clutch if you have kids that are different ages. With no lifeguard on duty, two separate pools are a parent's nightmare but this ocean-front water feature connects the two, making keeping an eye on everyone, super easy.

Add to that, the little kid's pool is zero entry with splashing water features, including a waterfall (thanks to the infinity-edge of the big kid pool and is where the two pools connect)— little kids will adore splashing around.

3. Sheraton Kauai's Food Is Top Notch

Resort food can run its course fairly quickly but after five days, we still hadn't had our fill. Trust us when we say that with four restaurants on the property, we were a little nervous that we'd get food-bored or not have enough options—especially with a picky-eater in tow. Thankfully, that was not the case. The food options were varied and perfectly executed and we walked away feeling satisfied by every meal. Highlights include:

First Light Coffee and Juice Bar: Open as early as 5:30 a.m. (an early-morning miracle if you are still waking up in your time zone), you'll find custom-made coffee drinks as well as pastries and sandwiches. A must-order? The ube latte—either iced or hot.

Daybreak Restaurant: If you want a sit-down breakfast, here you can get a breakfast buffet or order food a la carte. The Acai bowl and the English muffin sandwich were big hits. Kids with a sweet tooth will love the ube pancakes—they come with ube-white chocolate syrup, macadamia nuts, and caramelized bananas.

The Crooked Surf: This poolside spot with ocean views is where you can get drinks, snacks and lunch. The kids loved the beef sliders and we loved the Crooked Surf Tacos—fish tacos that were lightly battered and hit the spot more than once during our stay.

Moa Moa Hawaiian Fish House: For a memorable, upscale dining experience that is still kid-friendly, head to Moa Moa. Pacific Island cuisine is on the menu with mussels, and market fish are just some of the highlights. If you don't eschew garlic, order the Kauai Garlic Prawns on a bed of linguini pasta—quite possibly the best garlic shrimp dish we ever had.

4. On-Site Luau: Luau Ka Hikina

New for the resort, and a draw for the area, is the on-site Luau Ka Hikina. The Sheraton Kauai Resort recenlty built an ocean-view, open-air event pavilion, Halau Ho'okipa, to host special performances during the week that celebrates Hawaiian and Polynesian history. It is a festive experience, beginning with a meet-and-greet with the dancers and musicians—you're even welcome to try swinging poi balls (much harder than it looks!) and try your hand at drumming on Tahitian drums. A torch-lighting ceremony opens the show, and then the highlight, of course, has got to be seeing the ancient hula perform alongside award-winning singer Leilani Rivera Low.

The buffet-style dinner (included with the price) offers a variety of local favorites—including Mahi Mahi, Kalua Pork, Huli Huli Chicken, and poi— that island staple we mentioned above—and definitely a must-try. As the emcee said, it's an acquired taste for those who didn't grow up eating it, but our group gave it two thumbs up.

Dates: Dates vary but shows typically take place two-to-three times a week
Cost: $64 & up/person

Online: luaukahikina.com

Insider Tip: After the luau, head back to the pool some night swimming! The torches are lit, the fire tables are going and it's magical to swim under the stars.

5. The Location of the Sheraton Kauai Resort Can't Be Beat

The resort is located equidistant from the two main towns on the island, Princeville and Poipu. From here, you can explore all the activities like hikes, waterfalls, and more—all within an hour to an 1.5 drive from the hotel. See below for the top ten activities to do in Kauai with kids.

Also worth noting, there's the shopping center called Coconut Market less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Here you'll find Island Country Market that doubles as a grocer and deli shop. There are also various souvenir shops, more restaurants (we recommend checking out the Bobby V's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria  and Chicken in a Barrel BBQ), a courtyard where you can hear live music as well as a farmer's market that pops up during the week.

6. Complimentary Bikes & Order Ahead Picnic Lunches

Complimentary cruiser bikes await guests near the lobby—simply sign them out at the bellman desk and then explore the 8-mile oceanfront bike path that connects to the town of Kapa'a. Want to make your exploration of the island by bike even more memorable? Order one of their Picnic Series at the Concierge. There are various options, starting at $35 per person (including options for kids called the Keiki Picnic Party), and when you're ready for your ride, strap on the back pack and out you go. Stop along the coast and set up your picnic lunch along the way.

Good to Know: The bikes are typically first-come, first-serve although if you reserve a picnic lunch ahead of time, they'll hold your bikes for you. They also have bikes for kids so everyone in the family can ride together.

5. On-Site Game Room & Oceanview Hammocks

Filled with pool tables, foosball, table shuffleboard, and arcade games, rather than be sequestered off to the back of the building in a dark room, this game room is open-air and right next to the pool area. In the grassy area, there's also lawn games—from lawn Jenga and corn hole to giant Connect Four, if you need a break from the pool, there are plenty of fun games and activities to keep you occupied. One of our favorite spots to chill? The beachside hammocks with ocean views while the kids play in the sand.

6. Arts & Crafts, Shave Ice & More Activities That Take Place on the Property

If the pool, beach, and game room aren't enough for active kids, there are a slew of locally-inspired activities that take place on the property, and rotates throughout the week. There's kite making, lei making, learn to hula and play the ukulele, coconut husking, a torch lighting ceremony, and a shaved ice cart that appears poolside everyday at 1 p.m. Refer to the website, postings in the elevator, and the weekly newsletter for the day's activities.

8. Epic Sunrises & Morning Yoga

Before you think I'm going suggest you wake up early to catch the sunrise (I'm not), the three-hour time difference from the west coast of the US, more likely than not, means you and the kids will be up. Don't sit in your room though—grab a coffee from appropriately named First Light Coffee & Juice Bar place (order the ube latte) and head over to the beach to watch the sun rise. It's spectacular—and the kids can run around on the beach and grassy area while you have a moment of zen.

Speaking of channeling some island zen, complimentary yoga takes places on the beach-front grass during the week (more often during busier seasons). Yoga starts at 7 a.m. (not an issue if you still dealing with jet lag) and is a great way to start your day and channel those good-for-you island vibes.

10. Be Prepared —Your Kids Won't Want to Leave the Resort

Seriously not kidding—we left the resort to explore the island and after about two hours checking out waterfalls, beaches and a glorious tree tunnel—all my kids wanted to do was go back to the resort. It's so relaxing and chill at the Sheraton Kauai Resort—they had freedom to roam around, play lawn games or arcade games, had the choice between the pool and the beach, great food at their fingertips—what else could they ask for?

Good to Know: The beach does not have a lifeguard on duty—as always, be careful when playing in and near the ocean. This particular beach has a breakaway, making for milder waves but it's not a swimming beach or recommended to wander too far into the water. For swimming beaches, see below.

The 10 Best Things to Do in Kauai with Kids

Besides lounging away at the resort? From low-key snorkeling in a protected lagoon that's perfect for small kids, to intense hikes that comes with a fair share of warning from the National Parks Department, there are so many family adventure travel options to fit your adventure level in Kauai—just fitting them all in will be the hardest part.

1. Kayak the Wailua River: Located under 10-minutes from the Sheraton Kauai Resort, in addition to kayaking the river, you can also paddle board. With Wailua Kayak & Canoe, you can choose a guided tour, or go on your own. They even have tri-kayaks to rent that fit two adults and one child.

2. Find a Waterfall: There are multiple noteworthy waterfalls on the island including probably the most famous one—Manawaiopuna Falls also known as Jurassic Falls thanks to the movie, Jurassic Park (only viewable via helicopter tour) but Wailua Falls (famous from the hit tv show Fantasy Island), and Opaekaa Falls are both close to the hotel and easily accessible. Both can be seen after parking and walking up to a viewing area—go early as it can get crowded and difficult to park.

3. Visit the Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana Plantation: Got a trainspotter on your hand? Head over to the Kilohana Plantation where you can be transported through 2.5 miles of crops like sugar cane and taro and learn about the history of the plantation plus get to feed some local animals like pigs, goats, sheep, and their friendly donkey named Stiney.

4. Snorkel at Baby Beach in Poipu: This protected cove is perfect for babies and little swimmers. Plus, there's ample parking nearby.

Good to Know: You'll end up driving through the Tree Tunnel—a 1-mile long gateway to Kauai’s South Shore that is made up of hundreds of Eucalyptus trees.

5. The Best Hikes in Kauai with Kids: Ranked as the best trail to hike in Kauai, the Kalalau Trail runs along the Na Pali coast and the first 2 miles free to access—the rest of the trail requires a permit (make reservations far in advance to avoid disappointment). Head the warnings on this hike—slippery rocks, potential stream crossings and other dangerous conditions make this hike better suited for older and more experienced hikers.

On the western side of the island is Waimea Canyon—the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, most experts recommend sticking to the Iliau Loop Trail if you have little kids. It's short and provides epic views—crucial for those short legs and attention spans. Insider Tip: Stop at JoJo's Shave Ice in Waimea on your way back to the hotel.

6. Sail the Kauai Coast: Various outfitters offer 1/2 cruises where you can head out onto the deep blue sea and take in the view of the Garden Island from the water.

7. Go Horseback Riding: For equine-minded adventures, you can choose to horseback ride along the bluffs, through the fields and past beaches. Depending on your comfort level, choose from 90 minute tours to five-hour long sojourns that include photo ops, swimming and epic views.

8. Try a Zip Line Adventure: Touted by Julian Cable-Treadwell, the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort Director of Marketing and Resort Manager, as the one island adventure most people skip but shouldn't, you and the family can get a bird's eye view of the island as you fly over lush forests and reservoir.

9. Go River Tubing: There are lots of places that offer river tubing (most of them are ages 5 & up)—the three-hour tour is fairly benign and gentle although it is worth noting there's a 1-mile dark tunnel for those that are claustrophobic or don't like dark spaces.

10. Taste the Best Doughnuts & Malasadas in Kauai: If you're in Princeville, hit up Holey Grail Donuts—not only a local Kauai fave but is quickly becoming an LA favorite thanks to their always busy pop-up at Culver City's Platform and Mar Vista Farmer's Market (PS: brick and mortar store are coming soon to Larchmont and Santa Monica).

Cable-Treadwell also alerted us to Kauai Bakery, located in the KuKui Grove Center just up the road from the hotel and serves malasadas—Portuguese doughnuts without a hole, filled with various flavors. We think they're even better than a typical doughnut—this yeast-leavened doughnut version is enriched with eggs, butter, and sometimes evaporated or fresh milk with a crispy outside and soft inside. Pick up the ube malasada (pictured above)—you won't be disappointed.

What You Need to Know about Rending a Car in Kauai

You'll need to rent a car to get around the island. If you don't need a car right away though, after arriving at Lihue Airport, we recommend taking a cab to the hotel. While there is such a thing as "island time," the car rental lines are long and extremely slow.  It's a scene out of the movie Zootopia where the main character enters the DMV, only to discover, it's run by sloths. We rented from Thrifty and it took almost two hours to get our car.

The Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort is only 6.5 miles away from the airport—save your time (and your sanity) and skip the car rental when you first arrive. You can always take a cab back to the car rental place at a less busy time, or take Cable-Treadwell's recommendation and use the car rental company Turo—he said they have positive reviews from travelers.
