Winterland at Gallagher Way has gotten a major upgrade this holiday season—and, for the first time, visitors can step inside Wrigley Field to take part in the festive fun

Whether you’ve never been to Winterland at Gallagher Way or it’s a key spot on your Chicago holiday circuit, this year has big changes (and a much bigger footprint!) that both new and returning visitors will be experiencing for the first time. For those unfamiliar, Gallagher Way is the park right outside the west side of Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs. On game days, it acts as an entryway into the stadium, as well as an area in which ticket holders can spread their legs and watch the game on the 40-foot video screen. On non-game days and outside of baseball season, it acts as a town center with activities and events for all ages throughout the year—from free movie nights, fitness classes, and musical performances.

And for several winters now, this popular section of the Wrigleyville neighborhood has transformed into a beautiful, bustling, North Pole right here in the city.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CkoFGv-PgHR/?hidecaption=true

Christkindlmarket at Gallagher Way

Historically, the centerpiece has been the Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville. Christkindl markets throughout Chicago (the flagship location is at Daley Plaza) are known for their German traditions, including wooden hut structures occupied by vendors of diverse hand-crafted gifts, scrumptious food, and seasonal drink options. Make a bee-line to the raclette stand for the best melted cheese sandwich of your life. Also be sure to pick up a commemorative mug filled with Gluhwein (hot spiced wine) or hot cocoa. You can bring your mug back year after year for a discount on refills, or start a collection of mugs from every year.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClKiqwFLU-s/?hidecaption=true

Up until this year, the Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville has been set adjacent to a sizable ice rink. New this year however, Gallagher Ice Rink has been moved into Wrigley Field along with a number of other fun activities. In its place, a carousel now thrills kids of all ages as it circles under the twinkling lights of the market. The carousel being considerably smaller than the ice rink allows more breathing room for shoppers as they browse through all the stands, take pictures by the imposing Christmas tree, or enjoy the live music and performances just below it.

Winterland at Gallagher Way

Winterland at Gallagher Way is technically located within the hallowed walls of Wrigley Field. You know that feeling you get when you enter a stadium from the dark concourse tunnel . . . when you are momentarily blinded by the light, then happily overwhelmed by all there is to take in, and can just taste the excitement of the crowd? That is the feeling you get walking into Winterland. As you enter from left field, immediately on your right are holiday-themed carnival gaming stations. Straight ahead is the Infield Express train that travels the same baselines as baseball's greats, and a Hot Cocoa Cup ride (akin to a more classic teacup ride) for small children. To the left you'll find a Tilt-a-Whirl (Winter Whirl), a tubing hill (Wintertube), and of course the ice rink.

Ice Skating

The Gallagher Ice Rink is as big as ever, but it's sectioned off for ice bumper cars. Just behind the rink is where you can pick up your rentals and sign a waiver.

Insider Tip: Everyone in your party must get in this line, whether they are getting rentals or not. You still need to sign the waiver and get a bracelet that will allow you on the ice. It's here that you may also obtain an assigned time slot for ice bumper cars. If people in your party have their own skates, they can work on putting them on while someone else waits in line, but they must come back to the line to have their bracelet put on them by a staff member.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClhM8soP7AG/?hidecaption=true

Ice Bumper Cars

Although the ice bumper cars give assigned time slots, plenty of visitors don't realize this and instead line up alongside the arena. Therefore, at your assigned time, you should check in with the attendant to see if you still need to get on the line, or if they can get you on the ice right away.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClJm5RrPY0a/?hidecaption=true

Santa Claus

It's not all ice sports at Winterland: there's even a Santa! Santa's Workshop, located in the lobby of the Premier Entrance (under the marquee) is open through Dec. 18 on Fridays from 3-8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Meeting Santa and taking pictures with your own camera is free, and professional photos are available for purchase.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CkuJFM6vUsz/?hidecaption=true

Additional Amenities

Along the left field wall, private chalets are available for rent, and just above third base there is The Lodge for purchasing food and drinks or warming by the fire pits. Bathrooms are located back in the main concourse. (Christkindlmarket bathrooms are located in the Cubs building next to The Lucky Door.)

Winterland, as a whole, is enveloped in holiday decorations and blaring holiday music. On Thursday nights from Dec. 1-22 at 6 p.m., you can enjoy a free outdoor holiday movie on either the Gallagher Way or Wrigley Field video boards while you walk (or skate!) around.

The combination of Winterland and the Christkindlmarket hits every festive note. Holiday lights? Check. Holiday music? Check. Shopping? Check. Fun activities? Check. Seasonal food and drinks? Check. Santa? Check, check!

Does this all sounds too good to be true?

Costs and Crowds

Well, it isn't without cost. While the Christkindlmarket is still free to walk around, entry into Winterland does cost $5 per person (children under three are free), and each activity, including the carousel in the market, requires additional tickets. Whereas ice skating used to be free if you brought your own skates, it is now $12 to skate and and additional $8 to rent.

An activity ticket costs $4. All the rides and games (except for the ice rink and ice bumper cars) cost one ticket. Rink access is three tickets, skate rental is two tickets, and ice bumper cars are four tickets (that's $16!) for a five-minute session.

Buy tickets online or at the Wrigley Field Box Office on Clark Street. Activity tickets can also be purchased online or once inside the ballpark. Carousel tickets can be purchase with a credit card while standing in line from the attendant, or in the ballpark for use after you leave Winterland.

However, your best bet is to purchase the Peppermint Pack online in advance. This bundle costs $30 and includes your admission into Winterland as well as 10 attraction tickets (a $45 value.)

Interestingly, the cost does not seem to be keeping anyone away. Be aware that it can get exceptionally crowded on the weekends, particularly with mild weather. It is also very important to note that while you can stay inside Winterland as long as you like, there is no re-entry if you leave!

Dates

Winterland runs through Sunday, Jan. 8.
Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville runs through Dec. 31.

Regular hours are:
Mon-Thurs: 3-9 p.m.
Fri & Sat: 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Sun: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

55 Free or Cheap Ideas for Inventive Backyard Play

Your kiddo has a minivan-full of pool floats, but what about you? Now there’s a motorized version that turns a typical blow-up tube into your very own boat!

With GoBoat you get all the water-filled fun—without the bulky bother. Now you don’t have to worry about securing an awkwardly shaped contraption to the roof of your car or buying a hitch for your SUV.

What exactly is GoBoat? At its most basic, it is a motorized pool float. But it’s also so much more: it’s light-weight, portable and you can use it as a bumper boat! That means hours of lake, river or creek-side fun.

While the motorized float may sound like an awesome idea for the kiddos, the GoBoat instructions note, “Operators must be 16 years old or under the direct supervision of an adult.” You should always wear a properly fitted life vest and take the same precautions you would when driving an actual boat. That means no margaritas on the motorized float and steer clear of swimmers.

Visit GoBoat’s website for more information on this fab float and how to order one for yourself!

This Is What Happens When Chrissy Teigen & John Legend Go RV-ing

11 Ways to De-Stress in 1 Minute (or Less)

Between bridge trolls, Archie McPhee, the Pike Place Market gum wall and a playground centered around a larger-than-life cowboy hat and boots, Seattle has its share of quirky family attractions. And now, you can add one more item to your family’s unique adventures—ice bumper cars! It’s Tacoma’s latest family attraction and one of just 14 places in the world where you can ride them. Scroll down to learn more about this one-of-a-kind experience.

A New Kind of Ride

If ice bumper cars conjure images of ice hockey, curling or traditional bumper cars—you’re right! They’re quite a mix. They look like colorful oversized hockey pucks with LED lights. And the way they glide, so smoothly across the ice, is similar to a curling stone. Like traditional bumper cars, a driver controls them, although their cushioned bump is less aggressive than a carnival ride. In short, they’re an easy way for families to have fun on the ice with little skill involved. Each car is controlled by two joysticks that are so easy to use even toddlers and preschoolers can get in on the fun. They help you move forward and spin in either direction, in your pursuit of (or escape from) bumps. It doesn’t get easier than that!

Let’s Go for a Spin!

A lot of planning went into bringing the ice bumper cars to Sprinker Recreation Center. One of the priorities was making it a logistically painless experience for families. So rather than waiting around in long lines, riders will reserve time slots so they know exactly when it’s their turn. For their Grand Opening Weekend (May 25-27) reservations for a spot can be made online through Brown Paper Tickets. After opening weekend, families can call in to reserve a session (253-798-4030). Each session is 15 minutes of ride time ($12). But you can add a skate session to your bumper car ride ($19) to give the kids something else to do before and after their slippery adventure. Once you’ve reserved your slot, it’s time to plan the rest of your South Sound adventure!

Beyond the Bumper Cars

After you’ve checked out the bumper cars, and skated a few laps around the ice rink, you can keep the good times rolling at Spanaway Park. The same spot you’ve taken the kids to see Fantasy Lights during the winter holidays looks quite a bit different on a sunny day. And it’s just a quick hop over Military Road to get there (psst…keep your car parked at Sprinker to avoid the parking fee here). The 135-acre park has lots of paved walking trails that run along the lake, perfect for toddlers and strollers. There’s a new playground there, as well, with equipment that will keep both Littles and Bigs busy burning off any leftover energy they have after bumper cars. If the boathouse is open, you can rent paddleboats, rowboats and canoes to take out on the lake for just $10 per hour. Adding a stop here onto your South Sound trip means you can make a full day out of this adventure!

Good Eats

There are a few ways to “food” after you’ve had your fill of bumper cars. You can grab concessions at the rink’s concession stand, which will be open whenever the bumper cars are bumping. Eats from home are also allowed, although food in the rink isn’t. You’ll find plenty of picnic benches or grassy fields to throw down a blanket and enjoy the sunshine around the rec center. And Spanaway Park, just across the road, has even more seating if a change of scenery is what your kiddos need.

Perfect Party Packages

If your kiddo is always on the lookout for an unusual birthday experience, the ice bumper cars certainly fit the bill. Add the ice bumper car experience to either of the existing skate party packages for an easy win. Fully-hosted party packages that include a party room or rinkside seating, food, décor and a special announcement for the birthday kid and 10 friends runs $200. If DIY is more your speed, you can rent a party room and host 10 friends at the skate rink for $150. Ice bumper cars can be added to either of these packages for $12 per person for 15-minutes. It puts a whole new spin on a typical party package.

Good to Know

1. Opening Weekend has extended hours. Riders can book times online for sessions at these dates and times: May 25, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; May 26, 2 p.m.–8:30 p.m.; May 27 11 a.m.–8 p.m.

2. Kids ages 3-5 ride for free, but they must ride with an adult. Kids who are 6 years old and 42” tall can ride by themselves.

3. Closed toes shoes are a must, so leave your flip-flops at home.

4. It’s an ice rink, so even if the sun is shining, be sure to wear layers to keep you and the kiddos warm.

5. It’s best to arrive 10-15 minutes before load time to make sure you don’t miss your window.

6. Although specific time frames are still TBD, the ice bumper cars will only run for public sessions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Kid under the age of 6 will enjoy the KidJump section (open every day from 9 a.m.-10 a.m.) While walk-ins are always welcomed here, it is recommended that you schedule a "flight” ahead of time. If you need more than a few hours to burn off some energy and get out of the same four walls, then the Great Wolf Lodge Resort in Grand Mound just might be the ticket for you. Laser Quest

Laser Quest Facebook page

Even Laser Tag has received an upgrade at places like Laser Quest. Here, you’ll have three different types of experiences to burn off energy. First, there is the regular game where the concept is to try to tag as many people as you can without getting tagged by others. The 15-minute game play will fly by young ones, but is just long enough to wear out out-of-shape adults. The Iron Man game mode is twice as long and includes swirling fog and energetic music to keep you going. Then, there is the Key Quest which combines laser tag with an escape room. You’ll need to find clues, solve a series of puzzles and find the missing key to let yourself out! Regular games are $9 per person; Iron Man games are $12 per person and the Key Quest Experience is $15 per person.

For Mom and Dad: While you might enjoy any of the three activities, the Key Quest Experience involves less running around and is geared for those ages 12 & up.

Whirlyball

Helen Green

Described by some as "the world’s only totally mechanized team sport,” Whirlyball will get your juices flowing! Kids must be 8 years or older, but the learning curve is easy enough so that just about anyone can play regardless of size or athletic ability. The game itself has been described as a combination of basketball, hockey and Jai-Alai played while riding an electrically powered machine, similar to a bumper car, called a WhirlyBug, which is said to be quicker, stronger and far more maneuverable. In order to play, you’ll need to gather up some friends and make a reservation. The cost is $198 per hour of play for up to 25 players.

For Mom and Dad: This is a great alternative to your usual Bunco game.
