The days following Halloween mark a celebration of skeletal proportions: Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead

Celebrated throughout the Americas, Dia de los Muertos originated in Mexico, and kids will recognize the iconic sugar skull as a symbol. Your town or neighborhood may host a celebration, but not everyone knows the meaning behind it. Teach your kids about this uplifting celebration of life with these Day of the Dead facts.

Days & Day of the Dead Facts

day of the dead facts
Amber Guetebier

The Day of the Dead holiday is actually two days, held consecutively: Nov. 1 is marked as a day to honor lost children, as well as any lost or forgotten souls. Nov. 2, Day of the Dead official, honors all lost ancestors and loved ones. The week preceding (and sometimes longer) is spent in preparation for the big night which often culminates in a procession to the town cemetery or a central place where altars have been erected. Families gather together and spend hours making floral arrangements, baking food and sweets for the dead, and decorating. Altars are built at home, on graves, and in many community parks and schoolyards. It's no accident that this all takes place during the time of year when nights grow longer. It is believed that during these two days, the veil between the world of the living and dead is thinner and so it's easier for the dead to arrive. Not unlike the original story behind Halloween.

Day of the Dead Facts: A Dead Man’s Party

day of the dead facts

The idea is not as somber as it may at first sound: in fact, many believe the dead would be insulted by sadness! The tradition of celebrating the life of those who have died is invoked with colorful costumes and masks, parades, parties, and more. At the center of it all is the ofrenda, or offering to the dead. The altars can be simple or elaborate (usually more elaborate) but almost always contain flowers, favorite foods of the dead, including the traditional pan de muerto, photographs, and small relics or objects of the dead (a favorite necklace or pen, for example), sugar skulls and candles.

Here's an interesting Day of the Dead fact: Sugar skulls, in spite of how delicious they look, are generally not consumed (more than one toddler has tried them). Made from a mixture of meringue/powdered egg whites, white sugar, and a little bit of water, they are formed into the shapes of skulls by hand. You can also buy awesome molds (and all the supplies you need, plus great tutorials) here.

How to Make an Ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos

day of the dead facts

You can make your own family altar with the kids. Gather up a picture or pictures of someone you have lost, and place them on a table or shelf. Have the kids help you arrange some flowers, or head out into the yard or a park to find a few things for the offering: acorns, beautiful leaves, and a pretty stone. Make some cookies and leave one for your loved one. Light a candle. It's an easy and beautiful way to remember someone and teach your kids the story behind Day of the Dead.

Frozen carbon dioxide, a.k.a. dry ice, is frozen at a temperature of negative 109 degrees Fahrenheit

Experimenting with ice is cool. But dry ice experiments are even cooler! Unlike the ice cubes in your freezer, dry ice doesn’t melt into liquid. Instead, these blocks sublimate, which means instead of transforming from a solid to a liquid, dry ice goes from a solid to a gas. With the proper precautions, this type of science experiment for kids is safe—so grab gloves and tongs, open a window or take the CO2 outdoors, follow these guidelines from the National Weather Service, and check out these awesome dry ice experiments.

Blow Up a Balloon

dry ice science experiment from Science Kiddo
Science Kiddo

The air from your lungs isn’t the only way to blow up a balloon. This chilly experiment from Science Kiddo helps your budding scientist explore the properties of dry ice.

Build a Volcano

Check out this awesome overflowing dry ice volcano experiment from Life with Moore Learning! As if this isn’t enough fun, you'll also get a step-by-step guide to help your kids compare regular ice with dry ice and other freezing explorations.

Plan a Potion

Whether you want to make a witch’s brew for your family's Halloween monster bash or you just want to mix up a cool (literally) concoction, Our Best Bite’s Mad Scientist Potion has everything you need to make a mocktail that’s overflowing with fog.

Find Fog—Magically

Jeff Kingma via Unsplash

Make your own at-home outdoor fog machine with two ingredients—dry ice and hot water. Remember, dry ice doesn’t melt into a liquid. Instead, it sublimates or turns into a vapor. Place blocks of dry ice into a glass or bucket of hot water and then stand back and watch as the fog pours across your yard!

Put Out a Candle

Sixteen Miles Out via Unsplash

Can dry ice help extinguish a candle quickly? Your littles can easily blow out their bday cake candles, but have they ever used dry ice to make a flame go away? Head over to Life with Moore Learning for the how-to steps to this easy science exploration.

Make a Bubble Ball

Aaron Burden via Unsplassh

How can your kids make a crystal ball? Gather a few pieces or pellets of dry ice, a bowl, dish soap and a kitchen towel. Put the dry ice into the bowl, add hot water and watch the fog show begin. Even though this is exciting, it’s not where the experiment ends. Dip the dish towel into a soapy solution, and spread it around the rim of the bowl. Gently pull the soap-soaked towel across the bowl and watch as a ball-like bubble emerges in front of your eyes.

Compare and Contrast

Dry Ice Experiments
Erica Loop

How does dry ice melt? The answer isn't regular ice. While you might already know this, your child doesn’t. Freeze water, juice, soda, milk, and any other liquid you want. Put the frozen liquid cubes on plates and create a comparison plate with dry ice. Watch each ice option carefully. Your child can jot down what happens to each piece of ice and when.

Inflate a Glove

Diana Polekhina via Unsplash

If you have boxes of plastic or latex gloves hanging around your home, forget about cleaning. It’s time to put these gloves to scientific use, as they are a great substitute for balloons. Drop a shred of dry ice into the glove, tie the end and watch it magically grow. Hint: Don’t use too much dry ice for this experiment. A pellet will do. Overdoing it with the frozen CO2 might create too much gas, causing the glove to burst.

Bubbles and More Bubbles

Cristian Palmer via Unsplash

You’ve covered dry ice with water and watched it fog. But what happens if you put the frozen CO2 into a bath of bubbles? Use your kiddo’s paddling pool or fill the sand table with a water and bubble solution or dish soap mix. Ask your child to predict what will happen as the dry ice sublimates. Observe the bubbles as the CO2 gas fills the water and moves into suds.

Magical Disappearing Ice

dry ice experiments
iStock

When regular ice melts it leaves behind a puddle, but the same isn't true for dry ice. Again, the sublimation process causes it to turn into a gas state. Help your child learn more about the states of matter with easy observation-based science exploration. Place a piece of dry ice in a bowl outside on a warm day or in the sun. Ask your child to predict what they think will happen to the dry ice. Go back later in the day and take a look at the bowl. Like magic, the ice is gone, and nothing is left behind. Discuss what happened. Your child can hypothesize where the ice went and why there is no water in the bowl.

The Menorasaurus is our favorite DIY menorah idea!

Want to jazz up your Hanukkah with a homemade menorah that your kids will love? It’s easy! The secret ingredient to your hip homemade Chanukkiah is the 3/8″ hex nut—these little metal bolts are perfect for holding Hanukkah candles. Basically, if you’ve got something that can hold nine hex nuts, you’ve got yourself a menorah. Want to get started? We’ve got three easy tutorials for DIY menorahs, and when you’re done, be sure to check out our other favorite Hannukah crafts for kids.

Editor’s Note: Be sure to place all menorahs on a level, non-flammable surface away from drapes, decorations, and fabrics. Keep them out of reach of children, and never leave a lit menorah unattended. To be extra careful, we recommend menorahs not made out of metal be coated with a fire-retardant spray (like this one) before use to reduce the risk of fire.

The Menorah of Misfit Toys

DIY menorah for kids

If your junk drawer is anything like ours, it's probably full of left-behind kid stuff you wish you had the heart to throw away. Don't toss those treasures; use them for this menorah that will make your kids love their misfit toys all over again.

What you'll need:
-Nine small toys or figurines (think Barbie heads, Happy Meal toys, lone blocks, etc.)
-Nine hex nuts
-Wooden plank (or a few simple wooden blocks glued together to make a platform)
-Hot glue gun

What you'll do:
Have your kids dig through their toy boxes (and your junk drawers) and pick out nine small toys to use as candle holders. Be sure they find one that's a little taller that can serve as the shamash. You can also place the shamash toy onto a block to set it higher than the others, as shown above.

Glue hex nuts onto the top of all the toys, and be sure to cut off any hair or string that poses a fire risk when candles are lit. Let your kids decide which toy will go where and then glue them all onto the platform.

The Menorasaurus

Go ahead: Type it into Pinterest and you'll see the whole kingdom of prehistoric menorahs for sale. Why not make your own? It's super-easy, and takes less than an hour to make!

Good to know: This menorah doesn't leave much for the kids to do (hot glue guns and spray paint aren't exactly child-friendly), but your kiddos will love seeing their dinosaur transformed into an instant Hanukkah heirloom.

What you'll need:
- Plastic dinosaur
- Nine hex nuts
- Metallic gold spray paint
- Clay (for leveling the hex nuts)
- Hot glue gun

What you'll do:
Let your kids pick out their dinosaur (Hello, Dollar Store!).

Using a hot glue gun, glue eight hex nuts onto the back of the dinosaur and another atop the head for the shamash. To make sure all the candles will stick up straight, squish a little clay onto the bottom of the hex nuts before gluing them onto the dinosaur (it helps to also dab some glue onto the bottom of the hex nut themselves so they really stick into the clay)

Spray the whole thing with metallic gold spray paint and you're done!

Hot Lights (or, the Hot Wheels Menorah)

What you'll need:
-Nine Hot Wheels cars (with flat tops)
-Nine hex nuts (or 10 if you want to raise the shamash candle a little higher)
-Wooden plank
-Paint
-Hot glue gun

What you'll do:
Have your kids pick out nine cars and paint or decorate a plank of wood however they wish. While the paint is drying, glue the hex nuts atop the cars as shown. For the shamash (middle) candle, use a taller car or glue two hex nuts atop so it stands higher than the others.

Let your young assistants help you arrange the cars in whatever order they want. Then, glue the cars onto the plank.

We finally learn their origin story

It’s been almost of year of anticipation as we wait for the Hocus Pocus 2 trailer, but it’s finally here and we can already smell children. Disney+ has released the first actual glimpse of the Sanderson sisters, 29 years in the making.

In an Instagram post back in January, Executive Producer Adam Shankman revealed that the sequel would debut on Disney+ during the Halloween season.

“Now more than ever, people need to laugh. We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film,” says director Anne Fletcher. “I am so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life, and to be working with my friends at Disney again makes it all the more special. This is a movie for everyone, from the fans who grew up with the first film to the next generation of viewers, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Hocus Pocus 2 Teaser Trailer

Hocus Pocus 2 Plot

The trio returns when someone lights the Black Flame Candle and resurrects the sisters, who will, of course, be played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. They’re out for revenge and it’s now up to three high school students to stop the rampaging witches in Salem.

In the newest trailer, we also finally get a glimpse into the Sanderson Sisters as teenagers and we’re hoping that means we’ll get the entire origin story. It also revealed the first glimpse at Billy Butcherson, a “good zombie.”

Hocus Pocus 2 Cast

Disney

Doug Jones, who played Billy Butcherson in the original, will return to reprise his role. He is the only male actor to return for the second film. Keep an eye out for Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, and Sam Richardson, who are joining in on the sequel fun. Anne Fletcher takes over for the OG director Adam Shankman, who has a scheduling conflict.

Missing from the cast will be Omri Katz and Vinessa Shaw who played Max and Allison in the initial film. Fletcher tells Entertainment Weekly that “It was very difficult to try to have them be a part of it because we did talk about it—painstakingly. You’re trying to stay on track with the story, even if they came in as a cameo. People would say, ‘They could be in the background!’ and I’m like, really? You’re going to put the leads of the first movie in the background and be satisfied? You’re not going to be satisfied, you’re going to be angry.”

Hocus Pocus 2 Release Date

Hocus Pocus 2 will debut exclusively on Disney+ on Sept. 30, 2022.

Old Town San Diego is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement on the west coast and is considered to be the birthplace of California—and we can explore it right here in our own backyard.  Old Town San Diego State Historic Park has beautifully preserved the early days of San Diego via original and reconstructed buildings, historic museums, and by allowing visitors to have authentic experiences that demonstrate what life was like in the 1800s. Spend the day in this amazing locale on an Old Town Trolley Tour, dine on delicious food in some of the best Mexican restaurants in San Diego, and take a stroll back in time for an unforgettable family outing. Read on for details on how to plan your day.

Explore San Diego History

Mark K. via Yelp

There are so many historical sites to venture to in Old Town! Here are a few stand-outs you’ll want to add to your “must-see” list:

Old Town Model Railroad Depot— Take a trip back to San Diego in the 1950s! If your little one loves trains, and you have a love for details, then this museum is not to be missed. The custom Lionel size train layout covers over 2000 square feet and delights both kids and adults. Admission is $5-$10.

Seeley Stable—This reconstruction of a barn from the mid-1800s shows the life of a cattle rancher, featuring well-preserved coaches, buggies and wagons, Western memorabilia, and real donkeys. It’s free to visit and an excellent way to show kids how California got its start. Don’t miss the fully-functioning blacksmith shop, complete with fires and anvil action.

Whaley House—The well-known Whaley House is known for spooky spirits, but we enjoy it more for history than for hauntings. Pay $9.50-$14 for a self-guided tour and a less-creepy look at this mid-1800s courthouse. Older kids into Ghost Hunters will enjoy watching tourists chase ghostly “light orbs” with their cameras, but you may want to skip out on this if you have little ones who scare easily. Admission is free for kids five and younger.

Eat Authentic Mexican Food

Cafe Coyote via Yelp

There's no shortage of restaurants and authentic Mexican food in Old Town. Of course, where to dine depends more on your preference, but here are some of our favorite spots.

Old Town Mexican Cafe—This restaurant is best known for making fresh tortillas in the front window for everyone to see. We recommend sampling a piping hot tortilla off the grill and dipping it in the housemade guacamole. Their rolled tacos are also tasty. This restaurant has been dishing up authentic Mexican food since 1977!

Cafe Coyote—You can't beat the lively atmosphere and open-air seating at Cafe Coyote. Known for pristine service and Taco Tuesdays, Cafe Coyote is the perfect place to unwind with the kids after a fun-filled day in Old Town. The restaurant is huge, so there's rarely ever a waiting list. Don't miss their deep-fried ice cream.

If you're in the area for a date and are sans kids, enjoy some time at two restaurants/bars that are relatively new to the Old Town scene. Sip an amazing mezcal cocktail at Tahona and then order delectable Mexican food during their brunch, dinner, or happy hour. Additionally, Oculto 477 is a speakeasy, hidden, and prohibition-type bar in Old Town that's getting rave reviews if you want to stop in for a historic drink from a bygone era. The bar's entrance is hidden somewhere in Tahona. Make a reservation to sneak in here.

Visit a Schoolhouse from Yesteryear

Leah Singer

Take the kiddos to Mason Street Schoolhouse to experience a school of yesteryear. Built in 1865, this was the first public schoolhouse in San Diego. Learn about the school’s first teacher, Mary Chase Walker, who earned $65 per month. Kids love experiencing this old schoolhouse. They can sit at desks, check out books, see California artifacts on display, and even participate in a school lesson taught by a volunteer teacher. Mason Street Schoolhouse is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

Wax On! Try Your Hand at Candle Making

Leah Singer

Pop into Toby's Candle and Soap Shop to experience candle-making as it was done in the "old days." Kids can choose a candle figurine (boat, train, animal shapes, etc., are available) and then dip their figure in different wax colors to make a take-home candle souvenir. Other activities include making a sand wax or kaleidoscope candle, and prices are from $5-$32.

Visit the Junípero Serra Museum

Alex Matthews

Get a taste of history by touring the Junípero Serra Museum that sits atop the hill where California began with a single missionary. The donation suggestion for admission is $5. Even if you choose not to go in, it’s worth taking a walk around the lawn to catch beautiful vistas and stunning sunsets from this iconic San Diego landmark

Shop Unique Stores

Bazaar Del Mundo via Yelp

After you've checked out the historic sites, get ready for some shopping at one of the many stores in Old Town.

Old Town Market— An open-air market filled with over 40 vendors that offer keepsakes and souvenirs, clothing, purses, and just about any trinket you can imagine. Live music and performances add to the festive atmosphere.

Bazaar Del MundoLocally owned and operated, this shop is at the entrance to Old Town and features specialty art and gifts from around the world. Don't miss the beautiful handmade paper flowers that will last a whole lot longer than your traditional floral bouquet.

Cousin's Candy Shop—Need a sweet treat for the trip? This fun shop has every type of candy imaginable, including vintage classics. They're famous for their handmade pulled saltwater taffy, so be sure to grab a few pieces before you leave.

Mark Your Calendar to Attend Festive Old Town Events

Alex Matthews

Click here for information on the entertainment schedule for the Fiesta de Reyes stage in Old Town State Park. Additionally, Old Town comes even more alive during special cultural events and celebrations, including Cinco de Mayo and Dia de Los Muertos.

In May, don't miss Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo, where you'll dance live music, see Lucha libre wrestling, and ooh and aah over a grand display of lowriders.

During summer, visit Old Town during Stagecoach Days, which focus on a different aspect of early San Diego history with kids' activities, historic craft & trade demonstrations, cannon and anvil firings, living history activities, and more.

Other can't miss events include Historic Old Town 4th of July, Dia de Los Muertos, and Old Town Las Posadas.
