Finding games to play with grandparents is a lot easier than you might think

Spending time with grandparents is often full of laughter, love, and a little too much sugar. But even a spry and creative nana or papa could use a few ideas now and again. From card games to photo book exploration, here are some games to play with grandparents that span ages and offer mellow afternoon fun.

1. Dealer’s choice. Your little card shark will love cleaning up at Go Fish, but she might also enjoy learning some other old-school games. Grandparents can choose from their favorites: Spoons, Crazy Eights, War, and Rummy are all winners!

2. On the record. Kids of all ages love to ask questions, so let them satisfy their curiosity by interviewing Gram and Pops. Questions might range from, “What is your favorite dinosaur?” to “Tell me about your first date.” This list is a great start!

3. Strike a chord. If either grandparent has a talent for a particular instrument, encourage them to share that skill with the kids! Whether it’s a formal piano lesson or a chance to simply explore and bang on the drums (or strum a guitar or toot a horn), they’re sure to make a joyful noise.

4. Crack open a book. A pile of picture books (or one riveting chapter book) and a comfy couch are the makings of a perfect day. Make a trip out of it by going to the library, or let the kids show off their collection and pick out books they think their grandparents will enjoy, too.

5. Freeze time. To memorialize special or long visits with grandparents, collect mementos of your time together to make a time capsule—think photographs, ticket stubs, drawings, and puzzle pieces.

6. (Grand)mother, May I? While running around outside might be a bit too exhausting for a few grandparents, several classic yard games need at least one participant who needs to stand relatively still. Some of our favorites include Mother May I; Red Light, Green Light; Simon Says; and all kinds of hand clap games.

7. Put the pieces together. Take over the dining room table, and clock in a few hours of peaceful silence (or happy chatter) by putting together a jigsaw puzzle. You can dust off something you have on hand, or grandpa and the kids can go out and choose something together.

8. Get cookin’. If both your tykes and their elders like to cook, let them team up in the kitchen and whip up a favorite family recipe. They can even read Baking Day at Grandma’s together for extra fun! We even have cooking games that are perfect games to play with grandparents.

9. Tea for two (or three or five). Raid grandma’s closet, break out the good plates, and cut sandwiches into triangles—voilà! Grandparents will love being served a cuppa and will likely appreciate the opportunity to reinforce gracious table manners.

10. Go for a walk. Even if there’s no summer sun calling your name, nature walks are fun during any season. Have the kids put on some comfortable shoes and a hat, and they can hold grandma’s hand while exploring a new trail or give her a “tour” of the neighborhood.

11. Hunt for treasure. One part riddle, one part hide and seek, an indoor treasure or scavenger hunt will delight grandkids (and grandparents) of all ages.

12. Plant memoriesin a terrarium! With a simple glass bowl, soil, rocks, a few plants, and (our favorite part) a few of those tiny plastic dinosaurs that inhabit every corner of your home, grandparents will love helping their grandkids create a habitat for their most fearsome friends

13. Play "Guess Who?" Bust out the photo albums and play a round of "guess who?" where the grandchildren try to guess who family members are from older pictures. This is a great way to connect kids with people they haven't met and remind them we were all young once!

14. Plan an imaginary trip. Research a place you would like to go, even if it's a place like Hogwarts or a faraway country like Antarctica. Use a globe or even google maps to find the country; find books about the place or look it up together; create a packing list; plan an itinerary; and write postcards. This can be an ongoing project.

15. Speaking of scenarios... This one is great because it requires nothing other than two or more imaginations. You can sit on the couch, and if a grandparent is less mobile, they can 100% participate. All you do is create a "scenario": We're all on a baking show, the theme is [blank] and there are three rounds: cupcake, candy, and cake. What will you make? Another example: We're all on a rocketship heading to [planet name]. Talk about your astronaut names, where you went to school, how long it takes to get there, what your jobs are on the spaceship, and what you see out the window. What happens when you land? Do you discover a species? Is it cold?

The year’s almost over—what was your favorite part? Have your kids ask themselves that question and others with this easy DIY time capsule. Of course, while building a time capsule makes a fun New Year’s Eve craft project, it can be done any time of year. Give your kids the gift of nostalgia! Read on for the simple instructions.

time-capsule-supplies

What you’ll need:

Two 16 oz plastic soda bottles
Box cutter or craft knife (XActo knife)
Scissors
Labels
Clear packing tape
Paper, pens, paint, ticket stubs, knickknacks, etc. to help fill your time capsule with memories

cutting-time-capsule

Step One: Cut your “capsule”
Remove the labels from two clear plastic soda bottles. Then, using a box cutter or X-ACTO knife, (parents!) cut the bottles where the flat side meets the sloped top as shown.

bottle-notches-time-capsule

Step Two: Cut notches in one of the bottles
Use scissors to cut four notches in the rim of ONE of the bottles. This will make it easier to squeeze one bottle into into the other to make the capsule shape.

activities-for-time-capsule

Step Three: Now, freeze time!
Now that the capsule is prepped, it’s time to find ways to fill it. Talk to your kids about their favorite moments from the year — then see if you can find small items or photos to represent those moments. Some recommendations: Have your little memory-makers put their handprints on paper; it’s a fun way for them to see how they (and their hands) grow from year to year. Also: A simple questionnaire is a must for recording your kids’ current faves. Not sure what questions to ask? Try this easy printable from Uncommon Designs Online.

You could also have your kids write a letter to their future selves, give advice to their future selves, or make a hypothesis as to what their future selves will be doing in exactly one year (or whenever you’ve decided to open your time capsule). Have fun with it!
.

Step Four: Gather all your materials
Make sure you’ll have enough space to fit all your year-end goodies into your capsule. Our capsule included: Handprints of all three kids; a 2016 questionnaire; four pages of thumbnail-sized photos of our year; some Pokemon cards and figures; and two self portraits.

rolled-up-time-capsule

Step Five: Pack it up!
Roll up your papers and photos and slide it into one end of the capsule. Insert any small items in the middle. Then, close the capsule by sliding the two bottles together (the notched side should squeeze right into the other side). Seal your capsule with clear packing tape.

time-capsule

Step Six: Label and decorate
Label your time capsule with the year and the appropriate instructions as to when the capsule can be opened.

time-capsule-on-shelf
Step Seven: Hide (or bury) it somewhere until next year
Want to bury your time capsule? Go for it! As long as your capsule is completely sealed, it should last underground for a year or two without a problem. Not up for digging, or don’t have the proper yard for burying? Place your time capsule high on a shelf or drawer, out of reach of prying hands. Open it next year… in five years… whenever you’re ready for some instant nostalgia.

Happy New Year!

Halloween may look different this year as we remain in a global pandemic, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less fun.

While our kids are at home spending a great deal of time on their Chromebooks, Halloween can be a perfect escape from screen time to give your kids so much needed time enjoying the festive fantasies of Halloween.

Some entertaining Halloween activities to consider are decorating the doors with black and orange paper and draw witches, ghost, and goblins on them.

A basement, spare bedroom, or living room are perfect places to decorate with creepy crawlers, orange, and black crepe streamers, and a witch pinata. Consider hanging up some sheets to make separate haunted entrances for kids to go around and trick-or-treat.

And, of course, it’s not Halloween without sweet treats to enjoy. Why not make a papiermâché ghostly bowl to store your candy stash? Here is a tutorial to watch to help spark some creative ideas. Include some treats that provide a bit more than just a snack and offer games and activities, later on.

Have some fun creating creepy capsules. Using a little hocus-pocus, you can turn a Halloween colored Easter egg into something Halloween-y! Simply take a permanent marker and draw something spooky on your plastic eggs such as a vampire, pumpkin, or zombie and then have everyone fill their capsule with slime, a fake spider, or gummies to play a trick-or-treat on your family. Continue the fun by playing a game of ‘Guess What’ with your spooky creations. Have each person take turns selecting an egg with their eyes closed and make a guess as to what they have in their hands.

How to Play:

Step 1. Have everyone fill their capsule with something spooky (keeping what’s inside a secret) and put them all out in a line.

Step 2. One at a time, each person will have to go through and shake the capsules and guess what’s inside.

Step 3. Write your guesses down on a piece of paper (don’t show anyone your answers), and the person with the most answers correct wins the game.

Try some scary stories or fun facts. Share a favorite fun fact or make up a spooky story. Have everyone put ideas in a pumpkin bowl and take turns sharing the fun fact or coming up with a spooky story around the word you pulled out of the pumpkin bowl.

Lastly, end the day by creating a Halloween mask. You’ll need some paper, glue, scissors, elastic, and crayons, and markers. Cut out holes for your eyes and start decorating. Play a game of hide and seek in your new masks and see what characters are hiding around your house!

While Halloween at home is new to all of us, it can certainly be an exciting adventure and a Halloween you’re likely to never forget!

Days with a baby fly by at warp speed. There is also much more to do within the same 24 hours, and it all seems harder when you’re running on limited sleep. Regain lost time with these simple ways to add anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours back to your day. Yes, really!

Track Items with Apps
If the average person spends 15 minutes a day searching for misplaced items like their keys, shoes or wallet, according to a recent survey, we’re pretty sure those suffering from mom brain spend at least twice that. There are simple life hacks to avoid these daily pitfalls, like keeping a spare set of keys pinned to your diaper bag, but a more modern approach uses clever tracking devices like Tile, TrackR or Chipolo. Attach Bluetooth-enabled devices to sneakers, keys, wallets and more so your phone can help you find them.

Put Down Your Cell Phone
The internet is like a bag of chips…a box of cookies…and a tub of ice cream. We consume it in small chunks, most of us not realizing how many little bites we’ve taken until we’ve lost hours of our day, according to a Nielsen study. In fact, studies show that most of us now spend more time on the internet than we spend watching TV. While the average American is on their mobile device about 4 hours every day, a small study suggests that new parents spend considerably more time than the average person on social media. If you’re spending your child’s nap time posting baby pics to Instagram and Facebook, you may want to consider a social media break so you can use baby’s nap time for your own naps! More on why sleep is important below.

Catch Some Zzz’s
If you feel like simple tasks take twice as long since you had a baby, you’re probably not wrong. Fatigue causes brain function to slow down, which means you are thinking and acting slower. The first three months postpartum are the toughest: Studies show you’ll get less sleep during this period than at any other point in your life. And a new, small study demonstrated that sleep deprivation can last up to six years post-birth. The old adage “Sleep when the baby sleeps” seems impossible, but if you carve out time for a nap, it not only helps you stay rested but will help you tackle your daily must-do list with efficiency.

Become a Better Jetsetter
Pre-bambino, getting out of the house meant grabbing your keys, wallet and possibly a pair of shades. Now, a trip to the grocery store means packing a pint-size suitcase with diapers, wipes, bottles, snacks, a back-up outfit for blowouts and more. If you’ve gone from being punctual to perpetually late, try pre-packing your car (or stroller or diaper bag) with baby essentials. Turn your car into a mobile nursery unit by stocking multiple-compartment trunk organizers. Think beyond the diaper bag: Fill your organizer with the same must-have products you keep on hand in the house.

Go Capsule with Your Clothing
Seventeen minutes. That’s how long it takes the average woman to pick out an outfit. Take the guesswork out of your morning routine by adopting a mom uniform and reclaim over a quarter of an hour every single day. A capsule wardrobe—first made popular in the 1970s—is a curated collection of clothing staples that work for your everyday life. These could be pieces that mix and match well or a collection of the same types of clothes you like to wear (think go-to t-shirts, yoga pants and sneakers). Everything goes together, so there’s less thinking or planning. Create your collection with these 10 capsule wardrobe ideas for a new mom.

Smarten Up Your House
Life is filled with interruptions. If you’re preparing dinner, the baby will inevitably cry for you. Feeding your little loves? Yup, someone is going to knock on the door. The problem with all of these daily little hiccups is that it’s hard to get back to the task you were originally focused on. And the worst interrupter in your day is not your recent family addition, it’s you! A recent study found that we “self-interrupt” every three minutes. Most of us call this multitasking, but switching from activity to activity while we are still, um, mid-activity can cause us to lose minutes or even hours each day. You can remove some of these distractions by putting them on autopilot through the magic of technology! Let the door answer itself with a video doorbell; get a robot vacuum to handle the dust and dirt; and invest in a programmable coffee maker or formula maker that lets you schedule when your next cup or bottle is ready.

Cut Haircare in Half
The average woman spends around 15 minutes blowdrying her hair. For a full wash, dry and style, it’s a whopping 40 minutes. Save almost an hour by skipping the shower and spraying on dry shampoo. If “dirty hair, don’t care” isn’t your thing, choose a hair dryer marketed as ionic or ceramic and invest in a blow dry accelerator spray, like AVEDA speed Of Light, both of which reduce the amount of time it takes to dry your mane.

10 Quick, Easy Self-Care Tips for New Moms

Hot Baby Products That Are Total Game-Changers

10 Pregnancy & Parenting Podcasts to Start Listening to Now

It’s a New Year and we’re betting your closet needs a refresh. Maybe you’re working from home more and don’t use all those power suits, or maybe you just want to do some closet organization. No matter your reason, the solution is easy: create a capsule wardrobe of clothing that you can mix and match, wear any day, dress up or dress down and then ditch the rest! Here are the essentials any busy mom needs to start her own capsule wardrobe

What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Priscilla Du Preez via Unsplash

A capsule wardrobe is the idea that one should be able to pair her closet down to a few select, high-quality items that go with everything and never go out of style. It follows along with the minimalist trend we've been seeing everywhere, from Marie Kondo's de-cluttering mantra to the concept of Swedish death cleaning. For anyone who has a ton of cheap/trendy impulse buys hanging around (all of us), pairing a wardrobe down to just a few things can be daunting.

What Items Should You Buy?

A (Really) Good Pair of Shoes

Rothy's

Whether you work in an office or at home, there’s nothing like a good pair of shoes to make you feel like you can conquer the world. For busy moms, Rothy’s is the perfect fit. Designed by women, for women, the unbelievable comfort and fit of each shoe is the driving force behind their cult-favorite status. Available in three styles with dozens of colors and prints, choose a pair that best suits your lifestyle and career, whether you’re an FTWM, SAHM, WFHM or PTWM.

A Really Good Pair of Jeans

Measure & Made

Make it an investment to purchase one pair of really good, quality jeans. You’ll be wearing them almost every day so the price tag will be worth it. For a purchase that is sure to fit every time, we love Measure & Made. They're a size-inclusive brand that uses FITLOGIC to ensure you get the best fit and style for your body. Take a quick (less than a minute) quiz that takes your body size and shape into account, and then helps guide you to the right size for your body. There are several styles, but we especially love the skinny ankle jean.

Find your size and buy a pair here, $79 and up

A Classic T-Shirt or Two

American Giant

There’s no better addition to your closet than a classic t-shirt. Whether you like crewneck, scoop or v-neck, a basic t-shirt, especially in white, will go with EVERYTHING you own. We especially love the options from American Giant, because not only each item is made in the USA, but everything fits really well. Is white not your jam (because, well, kids)? Just opt for a simple black t-shirt and consider it neutral.

A Striped T-Shirt

Everlane

Nautical stripes are a classic item everyone should have in their wardrobe. While any shirt style will work, the boatneck is flattering on almost everyone and pairs with almost every style of bottom. We love this one from Everlane. It comes in grey and white or blue and red.

A Denim Jacket

Levi's

If you don’t already have this staple in your closet, it’s a must. It works with everything from other denim to black, skirts, pants and dresses. And as far as classic goes, there’s nothing better than Levi’s Original Trucker Jacket. Avoid trending pieces that have fringe or specific colors to keep your style timeless.

A Little Black Dress

Thirteen J via Unsplash

If you don’t already own a LBD, may we suggest going to grab one now? There’s something available for every shape and size, and you can wear it just about anywhere. Wondering where to look? Nordstrom Rack has a wide selection and array of styles that'll fit just about anyone and we love this simple, swing sleeveless style from Evereve (it has pockets!).

A Black Blazer

Macy's

Boring, you say? We say timeless. You can dress this down for coffee with your pals, sport it for almost any day at work, or even wear it for a date night with your partner. This INC version is a great price and is a classic fit.

A Bow-Tie Neck Blouse

Hawes & Curtis

Kamala Harris helped revive this trend, but it's a closet staple because it can be dressed down with jeans and flats or fancied up with a pencil skirt. Also known as the tie-neck or the pussy bow, we love the silky version from UK retailer Hawes & Curtis
