Many people are relying on Instacart to get groceries and household essentials. For many people, shopping goes beyond produce, meat and pantry staples, it also includes getting much needed medications. Costco prescription delivery via Instacart is now available nationally from more than 500 Costco pharmacies across 42 states including Washington, D.C., with nearly 100% coverage in each state.

The new offering allows Costco members and customers to complete their entire shopping trip online — from groceries and household goods to alcohol* and essential prescription medications — and have it all delivered to their door.

costco prescription delivery

Costco members and customers should arrange for their prescription to be filled at their local, participating Costco location either over the phone, online or in-person. Once the prescription is ready, the customer will receive a text message from their Costco pharmacy. In the text, they will see a link with the option to schedule their prescription for delivery. Once the customer clicks the link, they will be redirected to Costco’s site where the customer can confirm their prescription, sign into their Costco or Instacart account and continue to add groceries and household goods to their order if they choose. When the customer is ready to check out, they can select a delivery time and receive their order as fast as same-day.

Costco Prescription Delivery

Instacart is offering contactless prescription delivery in participating states for most medications, allowing shoppers to simply scan a customer’s ID for verification without a signature. Customers ordering prescription medications from Costco via Instacart must be over the age of 18, and are required to enter their date of birth at checkout and present a valid government ID at the time of delivery. In the coming weeks, the service will roll out an additional opt-in customer identity verification feature. It will allow customers to scan their own ID via the Instacart app and sign their own personal mobile device at delivery to verify their identity. Shoppers will still need to visually confirm that the ID belongs to the customer, but they can do this from six feet apart.

Shoppers pick up and deliver all prescription orders in a sealed, tamper-proof bag. Instacart’s prescription delivery service allows Costco members and customers to schedule delivery up to one week in advance. To ensure customers receive their prescription in a timely manner, Instacart recommends customers schedule their delivery as soon as they receive notification that their medication is available for pickup. In order to ensure a seamless prescription delivery experience for customers and shoppers, Instacart has dedicated a special care team to manage any relevant prescription-related inquiries.

Grocery Stores That Deliver to Your Door

Gluten-free food products dot the grocery aisle shelves and for many, adhering to a gluten-free diet is a necessity. Why? Celiac Disease, an immune mediated disease, can affect as high as 1% of the population in North America, according to Dr. Nasha Khavari, is a clinical associate professor and the director of the Stanford Children’s Health Celiac Disease Center. We recently asked Dr. Khavari about Celiac Disease in children and what parents can do to better identify and manage the disease (beyond only going gluten free). If you have a hunch someone in your family may be affected by Celiac Disease or want to learn more regarding proper diagnosis and treatment, read on to hear from Dr. Khavari.

Can you tell us what exactly Celiac Disease is and its instance in children? At what age are kids usually diagnosed?

Dr. Khavari: Celiac Disease is an immune mediated disease in genetically predisposed individuals. It can be triggered by eating/ingestion of gluten-containing foods, including wheat, rye, barley, and oats. The incidence of Celiac Disease may be as high as 1% of the population in North America.

What are the proper steps and procedures for determining a Celiac Disease diagnosis in a young child?

Dr. Khavari: If a child has either symptoms concerning for Celiac Disease or is at risk for Celiac Disease (a family history of a first-degree relative or other related disease), we ask that they are screened for Celiac Disease. The disease can present and range from no symptoms at all to significant malabsorption, failure to thrive and weight loss. Our Stanford Children’s Health Celiac Disease care team would begin with an initial visit, followed by the diagnostic work up with laboratory testing. If this testing results are concerning, diagnosis is usually confirmed with a procedure called an upper endoscopy.

My five-year-old complains about tummy aches. Is this a sign of Celiac Disease? Is there anything I can look out for to know if this is normal or if there’s a reason to be concerned?

Dr. Khavari: Abdominal pain can be a sign of Celiac Disease. It can also be very common symptom in children without Celiac Disease. However, some of the more traditional ways Celiac Disease presents include symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and problems with gaining weight or height.

With that said, some children with Celiac Disease have no symptoms at all making it very important to be tested if your child is in a higher risk category.

With the New Year, I want my family to eat healthier and am considering cutting out gluten our diet. Is this a good idea for my family’s overall health? What are the negative factors to consider before we eliminate gluten from our child’s diet?

Dr. Khavari: As pediatricians, we really like to encourage healthy, diverse diet, with minimally processed foods and significant fruits and vegetables. Many of the naturally gluten free foods, for example, fruits and vegetables, are important to incorporate into a child’s daily diet.

Unnecessary exclusion of foods from a child’s diet can be stressful and detract from their overall quality of life. Negative factors to consider before eliminating gluten from your child’s diet include the possibility of missing a diagnosis of Celiac Disease as laboratory testing may not be accurate once you have eliminated gluten from your child’s diet, quality of life effects on the child, and the higher cost of purchasing some of the processed gluten-free foods. It is also important to keep in mind that many of the more highly processed gluten-free foods are higher in sugar content which can have adverse effects on children.

If we find out our child does have Celiac Disease, what are our options and what sort of care will she need to receive?

Dr. Khavari: We recommend that your child see a pediatric gastroenterologist, as well as nutritionist with expertise in navigating the gluten free diet.

Are there medications they can take?

Dr. Khavari: There are no current medications for the treatment of Celiac Disease.

Is this something they’ll live with her whole life?

Dr. Khavari: Celiac Disease is thought to be a lifelong autoimmune disease in most diagnosed individuals.

How important is nutritional coaching/training for my child post-diagnosis?

Dr. Khavari: This is probably among the most important aspects of Celiac Disease after making the diagnosis. Providing your child with the proper nutritional support and education is key to their success in managing this disease. Our Celiac Disease team supports patient care specific to Celiac Disease, from the newly diagnosed through ongoing lifestyle maintenance, offering families the resources and valuable steps to ensure your child’s overall health and well-being.

My five-year-old son has Celiac Disease. What are some useful tips to help us navigate school snacks and lunches once he enters Kindergarten?

Dr. Khavari: We usually recommend sending a letter to the teacher and school staff explaining what Celiac Disease is, and why a student needs to eliminate gluten from their diet. We also recommend a stash of gluten-free foods for the classroom for those days when other children in the class may bring a gluten containing treats to share with the class.

What is the best way to manage this when he is away from our home, and for example, on playdates or at birthday parties?

Dr. Khavari: If you are close with the families of playdates and others having a conversation with the family about what foods they are able to eat is really helpful. Sometimes packing a gluten-free snack for your child, or for them to share with friends, can also be really helpful. While the gluten free diet is the most important aspect of treatment of Celiac Disease, balancing this with a good quality of life for children and allowing them to socialize, interact and eat (in a safe, gluten-free manner with others) is also a very important aspect of treatment.

You’re having a baby! Now it’s time to tackle that to-do list, which includes everything from picking out a crib to choosing a name. What might not be top of your list right now is taking a hospital tour. But, did you know a hospital tour can help you get a better sense of how you might labor, deliver and recover with your new bundle of joy? So before the big day, schedule a tour and be sure to ask these key questions so you’re as prepared as possible.

Who will be with me when I’m in labor?

Everyone deserves the comfort and reassurance of having someone they can trust with them while going through labor. With Kaiser Permanente, you can expect access to a team of highly trained doctors, midwives and nurses. Rest assured that you’ll be in the careful care of a dedicated nurse during your entire labor experience. In fact, Kaiser Permanente birth centers are staffed 24/7 with labor and delivery doctors, anesthesiologists and other key team members who are well qualified to make clinical decisions, such as pivoting to a cesarean section delivery when necessary.

If this is your second, third or beyond(!) baby and you’re hoping to deliver vaginally, you’ll be thrilled to learn that the VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) rate is 15% higher than the national average.* That’s reassuring for moms-to-be who want to try for a vaginal birth after a previous C-section.

What resources do you provide for moms before the big day?

As your belly grows, so does the need for consistent and quality prenatal care. And the team at Kaiser Permanente is available to ensure you have as healthy a pregnancy as possible with each prenatal visit, test and ultrasound. From nutrition and fitness to relationships and emotional health, you’ll have your care team, articles, videos and resources to help guide you through each trimester.

Kaiser Permanente also offers birth planning and childbirth classes, so you can go into your delivery empowered with the confidence and knowledge you need. You can know that you’re receiving high-quality prenatal care up to and during delivery day, with highly trained professionals and state-of-the-art facilities leading up to and during delivery day.

What resources do you offer once I give birth?

Once your adorable baby is cozy in your arms, it’s time to get some rest and let your body heal. Postpartum care is just as important as all of those prenatal check-ups! And Kaiser Permanente makes an extra effort to help mom and baby thrive. Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to treat critically ill newborns. And every Kaiser Permanente medical professional is on your team to support breastfeeding and bonding after the birth experience.

Comprehensive follow-up care includes postpartum classes, lactation consultants and your care provider who already knows your baby. Whatever you may experience physically or emotionally, your Kaiser Permanente care team is there to support and guide you.

Yes To recently recalled its Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask following customer complaints.

According to reports, the mask (which was sold at several retailers, including Target and Ulta), can cause extreme irritation, burning and red, itchy skin.

Chelsea Anders and her stepdaughter both used the mask. The Iowa stepmom told WHOTV 13, “Her face was welted with red, swollen, itchy raised abrasions and I had first thought chemical reaction. It’s what a lot of people had assumed when using this product was that it was just an allergic reaction. Then doing the research after I had seen what had happened, it looks like a chemical burn.”

Anders wasn’t the only person to have a problem with this product. Stacy Slater of Tampa, Florida told Today what happened after her 11-year-old daughter Addison used the mask. “She’s like, ‘My face is a little itchy and it tingles.'” Slater went on to add, “She said it felt like it was burning and stinging and at this point she was crying.”

In an emailed statement, a representative from Yes To said, “Yes To is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of all of our products and has maintained a strong track record of delivering quality products to our customers since our founding in 2006.” The statement continued, “We have recently seen reports on social media that children have used the Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask, unfortunately resulting in skin irritation. We have also received some similar reports from adults who have used the product.  We apologize to anyone who was affected in this way, especially over the holiday season.”

The brand also added, “While our products are all independently tested for safety, irritation, and allergy—and while we provide both warnings and instructions on our products about the potential for skin irritation—the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our main concerns.  As such, we have decided to pull this particular product off of the shelves while we investigate the complaints that we have received and seen online.”

When it comes to the products and retailers pulling them from store shelves, Yes To’s statement said, “We have reached out to all our retailers and informed them that we are voluntarily pulling the product off the market and to please remove all Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Masks off their shelves immediately. However, each store has a different procedure and process when removing products. We hope to have all products completely removed by Friday and will continue to follow-up with each store to make sure that the product is pulled from shelves as quickly as possible.”

Yes To also directed customers who have the product to return unused masks to the store of purchase. In a Jan. 3 statement the company made on its Facebook page, Yes To alerted customers to the problem and added, “If you’ve had an issue with this item, please contact our Customer Care team at customercare@yesto.com.”

Serena Williams recently helped to fund a $3 million investment, along with Mark Cuban and Arlan Hamilton’s ArlanWasHere Investments, to improve maternal health.

So how is Williams helping new mamas to stay healthy? Through a major investment (via Serena Ventures) in the health tech company Mahmee!

photo: Dw-lifestylefotografie via Pixabay

Founded by Melissa Hanna, Sunny Walia and registered OB nurse/International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Linda Hanna, Mahmee is a digital platform for new moms. The site uses a HIPAA-secure dashboard to help new mamas connect to medical providers—including lactation consultants, midwives and other professionals. It also monitors the mothers and their babies through “maternity coaches” and alerts doctors of potential concerns.

Co-founder and Mahmee CEO, Melissa Hanna, said in a press release, “In the maternity healthcare process, on the surface there are generally three or four people involved: the mother, the baby, and each of their physicians. What we don’t see are the many other people helping them: nurses, lactation consultants, midwives, nutritionists, therapists, doulas, home health aids, social workers and more.”

Mahmee co-founder Linda Hanna added, “We work as an extension of the care team. In doing that, we help providers listen to mothers, better understand their needs, and stay one step ahead of medical crises.”

As of now Mahmee has more than 1,000 organizations in its network. This includes Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, AltaMed, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, UCLA and other well-known, and well-trusted providers.
