Disney’s timeshare program gets you loads of benefits for your Disney Parks visits

Are you what they’d call a “Disney family” armed with Mickey ears at any given moment? Or maybe you enjoy that annual visit to the “Happiest Place on Earth” with the grandparents in tow. There is a way to enjoy repeated Disney magic with extra perks—and it could even save you money in the long run. It’s called Disney Vacation Club and it’s been around for decades. But what is this fabled part of Disney fandom? Let’s peel back the curtain on the Mouse’s membership club.

What is Disney Vacation Club?

In a pixie-dusted nut shell… Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s version of vacation ownership. Essentially, it’s like pre-paying for vacations for years to come—and savings can be found in the long run for both annual and frequent visitors.

Members purchase points to redeem annually at any of the 16 Disney Vacation Club resorts. And it’s not just the theme parks—there’s the oceanfront Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, and even the picturesque Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort on the coast of South Carolina.

Maybe you prefer the sea over land or to explore faraway lands? This yearly allotment of points can also be used to travel with Disney Cruise Line, and other Disney vacations around the world, including Adventures By Disney, National Geographic Expeditions, and hotels at most international Disney Parks. You can also convert points and use them at non-Disney Vacation Club properties around the world.

By using a points-based system, DVC offers flexibility in both accommodation style and destination as a family’s vacation habits change over time.

How does the Disney Vacation Club work?

Based on travel preferences, you decide how many points you’d like to purchase, and this will be the amount that you receive annually throughout the contract. Points needed per stay are based on destination, room style, and date of visit.

New contracts start at 100 points, but 150 is necessary to access ‘membership magic’—Disney speak for special perks (more on that later). You can also have multiple contracts at different resorts, and members can also add points to existing contracts as their vacation desires change. There’s also the ability to bank points and borrow from the following year—allowing members to use up to 3 years of points in one year for a larger vacation.

Looking to try it out? You can rent points from a qualified third party if you’re curious about room accommodations. Additionally, a limited stock of rooms at Disney Vacation Club resorts are available to the general public for cash stays.

What are the top DVC membership perks?

Disney vacations are a pricy endeavor but membership adds a Dole Whip-level dose of sweetness to the deal—especially for families with young children. Unlike standard hotel rooms, Disney Vacation Club resorts offer the desirable comforts of home, like larger common spaces, dining tables, kitchens, and washer/dryer in-room units. Accommodation styles range from deluxe studios all the way up to 3-bedroom grand villas, ideal for the smaller family or a multi-gen trip.

For families with little ones, complimentary cribs and playpens are also available. Pining for a night out?  At Walt Disney World, Kid’s Nite Out is the top trusted child care service available in-room—and even arrives fully loaded with games, books, and toys.

What is Membership Magic?

One of the biggest perks of being a DVC member is what is known as “membership magic.” This includes exclusive member benefits, the flexibility to travel the world with your family, and theme park perks that cultivate a sort of community pride and yes, there’s even Disney Vacation Club merchandise.

Is your little one overstimulated? There are lounges in the theme parks available exclusively for use by DVC members. Available at Epcot in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park in Anaheim, these lounges offer a welcome retreat to cool off with ample seating and ports to recharge your devices.

Perhaps the crown jewel of perks, members can enjoy Moonlight Magic, a complimentary after-hours event offered several times a year. Disney Parks after-hours events, like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, are a fan favorite but can set a family back hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This completely free party offers unlimited treats (hello, all-you-can-eat Mickey bars!), rare character appearances, and shorter wait times.

Discounts further add value, and include everything from savings on event tickets to dining and activities. There are even special member cruises on Disney Cruise Line.

Who can get the most out of DVC?

Since you can use your points however you’d like, and switch it up year after year, there’s not one cookie-cutter qualifier for who can get the most out of Disney Vacation Club. With flexible accommodation types, comforts of home, and perks, it particularly appeals to families with children. The multi-gen traveling family can save up points and use them for an annual extended trip with its larger, multi-room accommodations, or the frequent visitors looking to do several smaller visits can spread out their points across the year.

Insider Pro Tip: Disney Vacation Club will offer the best savings for those who plan to vacation at least every other year and who prefer to stay in deluxe-level accommodations.

A look inside some favorite Disney Vacation Club properties:

Disney’s Old Key West, Walt Disney World

Disney’s Old Key West is the quintessential Disney Vacation Club resort and the one that started it all. Its colorful, charming Floridian-inspired grounds are expansive, with standout pools and dining, making this the type of resort guests want to hang around for a much-deserved break from the parks.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Hawaii

There’s not a theme park in sight at Aulani, a stunning oceanfront resort on the quieter western shores of Oahu. Here, Disney’s excellence in storytelling is matched with local flair and architecture for an elevated experience all its own. Its on-site spa and gourmet bites stand out while also featuring the comforts Disney fans are used to, like Dole whip and character sightings.

Disney’s Riviera Resort, Walt Disney World

For a taste of the luxurious life at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Riviera Resort carries an upscale feel complete with posh accommodations. Inspired by Mediterranean resorts around the French and Italian Riviera, it feels far removed from the nearby theme park but with plenty of Disney touches throughout. The grounds are gorgeous and it’s home to some of the best dining at Walt Disney World.

The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland

The newest property, the Villas at Disneyland Hotel has that classic Disneyland nostalgia combined with contemporary designs and upscale amenities. A stone’s throw from the theme parks, rooms here are inspired by Disney’s beloved animated classics, like “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Princess and the Frog.”

An insider’s look at which San Diego neighborhoods are best for impressive Halloween displays and Halloween candy (of course)

We’ve already rounded up the coolest corn mazes, premier pumpkin patches, and the most creative San Diego-inspired costumes—so now let’s talk about the main event. Trick-or-treating in San Diego is easily one of the city’s most fun and free events around town. Bookmark our guide for the most devilish decorations and the sweetest sugar rushes at San Diego’s best neighborhoods for trick-or-treating that kids (and adults) will adore.

1. Mission Hills

This neighborhood goes all out with over-the-top decorations, ghoulish goblins and creepy crawlies around every turn. Residents often report upwards of 500 tricker-or-treaters at their door! Tiny tots might be scared by some of the more elaborate hauntings, but families with older kids will get a kick out of the spooky sights on Sunset Boulevard.

2. Kensington

In this quaint community, you’ll see every member of the family trick-or-treating. Even the doggies venture out in costumes (on leashes of course). These happy haunts make for a terrific candy gathering experience. Park near the Starbucks on Adams and Marlborough then follow little ghosts and goblins deeper into this howlin’ hood. Homes on Edgeware and Canterbury Dr. tend to get backed up with lines, so be prepared for the crowds.

3. Carmel Mountain Ranch

The highly walkable and stroller-friendly cul-de-sac neighborhood streets of Carmel Mountain Ranch make for easy paths to fill up your goodie bags. Little ones who aren't going to make it out on Halloween night or just want a headstart on the weekend can visit Carmel Mountain Plaza’s free trick-or-treat event on Oct. 31. Participating stores hand out candy to kids age 12 and younger and you can enjoy balloon art and listen to live music from 80’z All-Stars. Pick up your free treat bag near Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or at Angelika Film Center.

4. Miramar

If you’re in the armed forces (or have friends who are), military housing complexes are some of the best spots to go trick-or-treating. A high density of families means tons of kids in costume and parents eager to share the experience.

5. Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley's safe neighborhoods and warm community spirit make it an ideal and popular locale for family trick-or-treating. Just east of Carmel Valley, trick-or-treat before Halloween at The Village Pacific Highlands Ranch's Halloween event. Kids can go door to door to collect goodies from participating merchants, boogie down to live music and strike a pose because there will be complimentary photography.

6. Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad

Homes in this beautiful neighborhood are decked out beyond belief in Halloween decor. Many abodes look like they've been professionally fashioned with spooky decor, lighting, music and effects generally reserved for venues like Disneyland. The homes in this neighborhood are situated close together, which makes it easy and comfortable for little kids to go door to door in a short amount of time. Click here for a video of what it's like to trick-or-treat in Bressi Ranch.

7. Shoppes at the Forum, Carlsbad

The Shoppes at Carlsbad will once again give local families a convenient, indoor option for little ghosts and goblins to snap up some goodies earlier in the afternoon before other evening activities.

Good to Know: San Diego Neighborhoods That Score Top Marks for Trick-or-Treating
According to Zillow, Sunset Cliffs, Black Mountain Ranch, Talmadge and Miramar Ranch North are all top spots to collect candy too.

8. Encinitas

Don't miss the awesome Safe Trick-or-Treat event in downtown Encinitas on Halloween from 5-8 p.m. located on Historic Highway 101 (Encinitas Blvd. to K St.) where the Encinitas 101 Main Street Association will present its 20th Annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event. Local businesses stay open late to welcome trick-or-treaters and all along the 101 there are several places to stop and enjoy Halloween-Themed activities. Make sure to swing by the Lumberyard courtyard to enjoy music and games!

9. Santa Fe Hills in San Marcos

Santa Fe Hills has previously been voted the #1 best neighborhood for trick-or-treating in San Diego—and for good reason! The houses in this community transform into festive and spooky abodes with carved pumpkins and decorations that wow—but beware—some of the decor and spectacles may be too scary for very young kids, so proceed with caution. If you do feel like braving this neighborhood, you'll surely get an eyeful!

10. Little Italy

Check out the Annual Trick-or-Treat on India St. in Little Italy. On Oct. 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., little monsters are encouraged to dress up for this fun and safe Halloween tradition to enjoy trick-or-treating throughout Little Italy. The event will kick off in the Piazza della Famiglia with Halloween décor, music and some trick-or-treating. After grabbing a map of participating Little Italy businesses in the Piazza, little ghouls, witches and goblins can walk from door to door along historic India Street to get delicious Halloween treats and candy from the local businesses that are taking part in the event. Bring your family out for a night of sweet and spooky fun! It gets crowded, so we suggest arriving early.

11. La Mesa

Head out to the 3rd Annual Halloween in La Mesa Village for early and safe trick-or-treating! This is a free, family-friendly community event for all to enjoy. Participating businesses will be handing out treats & we've got a few fun surprises in store like character appearances, "spooky" organ music and more!

The Best NYC-Themed Costume Ideas, Halloween 2020 Edition

NYC Outdoor Family Fun for Fall 2020

Introduce your budding little theatergoes and music aficionados into the creative process of entertainment at the Kennedy Center’s newest addition, The REACH. There are nearly 500 reasons to visit this month (that’s the number of free events that will take place in the short span of 16 days!), but we kept it simple and highlighted the best five. Read on for what to see and do at The REACH’s opening festival Sept. 7-22nd.

photo: Richard Barnes

Free Performances

Take part in the festival with free timed passes, and choose from an unprecedented range of events representative of The Reach’s mission to bring artists and audience together. Get your dancin’ boots on for an opening day appearance by homegrown go-go performer Bootsy Collins or just put Sept. 15th (Family Day) on your calendar when author Mo Willems will emcee MO-a-PALOOZA LIVE!, a one-of-a-kind concert featuring songs from his stage adaptations, along with performances by local kids’ performer and GRAMMY winning 1-2-3 Andrés!, a Kennedy Center co-commissioned piece by Squonk Opera where gargantuan puppet hands tell the story, and a show called Infinite Monster by an Australian troupe where the audience is creator. Don’t be discouraged if passes are sold out online. The Kennedy Center encourages everyone to take part in the festival and will admit stand-by visitors as space permits.

A Picnic-Perfect Green Roof

You don’t need a ticket to take in the sights and sounds of The REACH on the North Plaza. Have you ever picnicked on a roof before? This outdoor space is the largest green roof in the city, measuring over 69,000 square feet. This month it plays hosts to a number of outdoor performances and movies, but once the crowds disperse it’s the ideal gathering place for an informal meal with family and friends (if you forget the nosh, there is a casual café and coffee bar on the grounds). After lunch, let the littles chase the birds near the two reflecting ponds.

Outdoor Movies

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Muppet Movie, an interactive screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15th. Bubbles, confetti pops and surprise character appearances are all a part of the sing-along (and dance-along) experience!  A screening of Jim Henson’s early work, including Sam and Friends, will take place earlier in the day. For more flicks al fresco, check The REACH site for events beyond September.

A Kid-Friendly Maker Space

The Moonshot Studio is a maker space for the performing arts where drop-in hands-on activities come in three levels—quick and easy, intermediate, and advanced—and are designed for everyone from little ones to adults. There are dance and drawing activities (Shh!!!! Don’t tell, but Elephant and Piggie may be involved here!) as well as an interactive project on courage.

Access to Hiking Trails

The seamless design by Stephen Holl incorporates the original Kennedy Center and surrounding neighborhood with a river walkway. For those wishing to picnic on the grounds or just want to pass through while hiking or biking, there is a pedestrian bridge connecting the Kennedy Center campus to the Rock Creek Park Trail, as well as bike and pedestrian access from the Roosevelt Bridge / I-66 W ramp.
