Parent Ranking: The downside to watching Luca is that you’ll want to book a vacation to the Italian Riviera ASAP. The sea monster movie takes place in the fictional town of Portorosso, and even though it’s animated, the scenery is stunning. While beautiful to look at, Luca is a bit of a bore and offers less wit and originality than many of the other Pixar films.
Two teen brothers, who also happen to be elves, go on a quest to spend one last day with their father, who died before they got to know him. After she realizes her sons are missing, their mother, Laurel, goes after them with the help of a warrior sidekick.
Parent Ranking: Despite voice work from Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, Onward is one Pixar film that doesn’t seem to get as much love. Bad timing might be to blame; the movie hit theaters in February 2020— weeks before the world was upended by the coronavirus pandemic. The film also feels uneven, with the second-half offering more of a reward than the first.
When Joe, a music teacher, and musician, dies just as he is about to get what appears to be his big break, he gets caught in the Great Before. With the help of a friend he meets there, he must find a way to get back to the life he took for granted. The film won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.
Parent Ranking: Soul made history as the first Pixar feature to debut on Disney+, likely thanks to its pandemic-year release. It was a holiday gift for both kids and parents in 2020, dropping on Christmas Day. While not the best Pixar has to offer, adults will enjoy performances by Tina Fey and Jamie Foxx as they voice this fun and thought-provoking film that isn’t afraid to challenge both young and old to face life’s greatest questions.
Young Miguel loves music, though his family has banned it. When he gets caught in the land of the Dead, he buddies up with skeleton Hector, and Miguel finally discovers the true history of his family and their ties to music. Coco won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) and another for Best Animated Feature Film.
Parent Ranking: The film features an amazing soundtrack and a moving message about love and loss, which makes Coco a hit for all ages. The voice cast is also impressive and includes Gael García Bernal, Edward James Olmos, and Cheech Marin, and is a loving tribute to Latin culture. While parents will enjoy all these things, they may also find it a gentle and non-threatening way to discuss loss with their kids.
Tween Meilin turns into a giant red panda when she gets excited, which makes her entry into adolescence even more frightening. She discovers that she isn’t the only one this has happened to. Her helicopter mom also went through the change, thanks to an ability passed down through generations of women in her family and their strong connection to the red panda.
Parent Ranking: The words “Pixar” and “controversy” don’t usually belong in the same sentence, but this 2022 film certainly stirred up a bit. Some parents didn’t love Turning Red’s depiction of tween-age rebellion and mentions of menstruation, but plenty of others found it full of heart and humor. Parents will enjoy a nostalgic return to their tween days and just how awkward and awe-filled they were, while also commiserating with Meilin’s parents about exactly what it means to parent an adolescent.
A rebellious spirit and a love of archery make Princess Merida, unlike other princesses. While doing her best to remain true to herself, Merida unleashes a curse that turns her mother, the Queen, into a bear. Merida must figure out how to fix things and restore order to the kingdom.
Parent Ranking: Don’t call her a damsel in distress. Brave‘s Merida breaks the mold of the typical Disney princess, and parents might appreciate the respite from all that chasing after Prince Charming. Not only will modern parents enjoy the film’s twist on the princess trope, but they will also relish the film’s historical accuracy, which encompassed everything from the chess set to the tartan patterns and colors the characters wear. Parent Ranking: The franchise that launched a million matching family Halloween costumes is worthy of a watch. The first film came out in 2004, and a sequel arrived with much fanfare in 2018. The joy of this film is that parents will identify with the suburban malaise that settles over parents Bob and Helen Parr, who once lived exciting lives as superheroes, and how good it feels to reclaim their youthful dreams in middle age, even if it’s alongside their children. Parents will also see their own lives reflected in the Parr’s with moments pulled straight from their own homes, like the moment when Bob tries to help his son with math homework and he shouts in frustration, “I don’t know that way. Why would they change math? Math is math.”
This futuristic adventure follows Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class (WALL-E) as he cleans up an abandoned Earth. When a new robot named Eve joins him, WALL-E falls in love and follows her back to a dystopian ship where humanity is a shell of its former self. Once there, he must find a way to save mankind.
Parent Ranking: Some have called the movie Pixar’s most adult offering ever, with almost no dialogue and a strong environmental message. It’s a testament to powerful storytelling that kids love this movie too. Parent Ranking: When it comes to ranking Pixar movies, is there a more heartbreakingly beautiful love story in all of movie-dom than Carl and Ellie’s? Both the love story and the loss when it ends, will appeal to adults. After the opening scene shatters your heart, the rest of this lovely movie will put it back together again. Adults will also enjoy the intergenerational bromance that develops between Carl and Russell, which proves there are no age limits when it comes to friendship.

The Sideways Inn This hotel is literally the first thing you see when you get off the freeway in Buellton—mostly because it’s hard to miss the towering windmill turned reception area. The whole place has been remodeled and it’s evident they had families in mind when they re-designed. Bottlest Winery Bar and Bistro will give you the best of both worlds—a family-friendly atmosphere and a wide selection of wines. Patti Bakes If you’re looking for something fast and easy, Patti Bakes is your best bet. Follow the smell of freshly baked bread and you’ll find one of the best sandwich shops in town. Every day they serve up soups, sandwiches, scones, muffins, salads and more. One warning: Once they sell out, they sell out. If you are dead set on checking out their cinnamon cranberry bread, come early, and come hungry. Some family favorites include the breakfast panini with eggs and bacon and the made-from-scratch soups.
Pro Tip: They are only open until noon on the weekends so plan ahead if you’re thinking of picking up accoutrements for a picnic.

What to Do
The Mendenhall Museum The Mendenhall Museum is like the movie Cars come to life, all the neon lights reminded us of downtown Radiator Springs, and your kids will love it. It has one of the biggest collections of car-related antiques on the west coast including signs, classic cars and racing memorabilia. It’s a must for the car-obsessed kids. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re bound to see something new around every corner. Favorites included the gas pumps from the 1950s and the collection of license plates and bumper stickers from around the US. The owner has been known to start up any of the cars on the lot so get ready to hear the vroom of a 1950s Mustang!

OstrichLand USA It’s not every day that you get up close and personal with the world’s largest bird. Buy a pan of food for $1 and walk out into the park to feed the fowl. Don’t worry, these guys are safely kept behind sturdy fences and you feed them through slots along the enclosure. Once you’ve had your fill of ostrich fun, head further into the park to visit the emus—the ostrich’s distant cousin. You’ll soon see why some kids call these guys modern day dinos. Don’t forget to spend some time in the gift shop for some kitschy ostrich fun before you leave. And if you’re feeling especially daring, you can buy ostrich jerky to snack on later.

River View Park & Botanic Garden When it’s time for kids to just be kids, head to River View Park and Botanic Gardens for scenic views of the Santa Ynez Valley, plus miles and miles of open land. Worth the Drive
Zaca Mesa Winery This place proves that there is such a thing as a kid-friendly winery, so much so, the staff practically welcomes you and your brood with open arms. Whether you snag a spot in the cozy tasting room or wander around outside, it’s a good time for everyone. And, depending on the time of year, they just might let you and your kids into the vineyard to try a few grapes right off the vine. Don’t miss the gigantic outdoor chess set with pawns, kings and queens that might be the same height as your tots. There are loads of picnic tables and outside food is totally okay but if you forgot to bring your own snacks, there are tons of munchies inside for sale.

But today, these wonderful wineries are opening up their expansive outdoor space to accommodate parents and offspring alike. Read on for our picks of the best family-friendly wineries in the Santa Ynez Valley that really take the cork.

Vineyards with Vistas
Dierberg & Star Lane Vineyards Tasting Room
It makes total sense that a family owned and operated winery like Dierberg would be family-friendly in practice. The outside grassy lawn not only provides views of the valley for days, but it also gives kids the opportunity to get their wiggles out and then some. With a garden and so much space to explore, you will love being able to keep eyes on the kid while they run and play, all while your tastings are poured outside. The actual tasting room, once a small section of their charming barn, was recently renovated to include the entire barn space making for a beautifully decorated spot to check out (and where you can buy a bottle to enjoy outside). An added plus is that the wines are incredible (some say the best in the region) so plan on bringing a couple of plastic glasses (to go with that bottle) and a picnic to enjoy outside so everyone can relax and unwind.

Koehler
Nestled in the middle of the Foxen Canyon wine trail, Koehler’s enormous grassy lawn is a perfect spot for your little companions to run around after a couple hours in the car. Tastings can be held outside on the lawn complete with picnic tables shaded by 130-year-old olive trees, making sipping while supervising that much more fun. As an added bonus to delight the younger set, Koehler’s grounds also include a few emus at the far end of the grass in a fenced off area. Outside food is encouraged (picnic time) and on the weekends, the winery currently has a taco truck on site serving up delicious food for purchase, making this place a must-stop on your tasting travels.

Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyards
Another fun stop along the Foxen Canyon wine route, Zaca Mesa offers up an expansive patio just outside the tasting room complete with plenty of tables perfect for lunching (outside food is definitely ok). Your little road trippers will love the life size patio chess set where you can watch them move pawns as big as they are while you sip and swirl. Parents will also love listening to the live music outside (perfect for drowning out a tantrumming toddler) while your tasting flight is poured right at your table. Forgot food? No problem: Zaca Mesa’s tasting room offers salamis, pecans, baguettes and cheeses for purchase (which pairs well with a nice bottle of their Grenache).

Melville Winery
This family run winery is a bit off the beaten path, but since it’s touted by many as having some of the best pinot noir around, we feel this one is worth the trip. Melville’s spacious grounds are quite inviting and kids are welcome to picnic/explore the outside offerings. Tastings are only poured inside the insanely gorgeous Tuscan-style tasting room building but can be brought outside to enjoy with the rest of the family. With quality vino and views like these, Melville is certainly a great stop for you and your pint-size picnickers along the Santa Ynez grapevine.

Beckmen Vineyards
The well maintained, wide-open lawn at this beautiful vineyard will have you and your young ones feeling like they have stepped into the pages of The Secret Garden. Kids will adore the two active ponds on the grounds where they can search for fish, frogs and tadpoles. You will love the cozy outdoor gazebos overlooking the vineyards where you can drink your tasting flights while keeping a close eye on your mini vintners. These gazebos are complimentary but are by reservation only so make sure to put in your request ahead of time. Feed the family with food from outside or take advantage of “taco cart Saturdays” for even more delicious options (and often, live music served along-side your tacos). With the strong wines produced by this vineyard coupled with the ease of having your kids along for the ride, you will be singing “Que Syrah, Syrah” all night long…

Tercero Wines
This tasting room may be small, but what it lacks in size it definitely makes up for in amazing family-friendly vibes. Owner Larry Schaffer, father himself, is a firm believer in personal attention, which is reflected in how he welcomes anyone and everyone into his downtown Los Olivos space. Kids are welcome to take full advantage of their sidewalk chalk which can be used either on the inside chalk board wall or on the sidewalk out front. The fine folks at Tercero also might just be inclined to turn their interior TV sets to Netflix Kids for your little adventurer’s viewing pleasure while you take full advantage of their delicious pours (they often have special wines available fresh from their local vineyards). Location is everything here, so if your vineyard-hopping brood are weary after a round of Tercero tastings, take them across the street to Stafford’s Famous Chocolates for an instant mood-boost.

Coquelicot Estate
Boasting one of the best selection of certified organic wines in the Santa Ynez Valley, this adorable tasting room is a perfect oasis-like alternative to a vineyard visit. Their enormous outdoor garden space features large picnic tables shaded by beautiful trees, a bocce ball court (a favorite with young game enthusiasts), fountains, bean bag toss games and winding pathways perfect for curious tots to inspect. Food trucks from their also-owned First & Oak restaurant in Solvang occasionally make an appearance here or bring snacks for your wee ones to enjoy on the patio (while you enjoy a few tastes of your own poured table-side). This hidden gem is also super dog friendly so be sure to bring your furry family member along as well.

Carivintas
And the award for “Most Philanthropic Family-Friendly Tasting Room” goes to…Carivintas! The winemakers at this whimsical kid/dog-centered spot donate a portion of their profits to nonprofit animal shelters and support groups around the country. Their raison-d’etre has always been to give back to the community while doing what they love (and they really put a lot of love in their wines). Located in downtown Solvang (convenient walking distance from many nearby hotels), kids have their very own play area inside of this tasting room complete with Legos, puzzles and other small toys to keep them occupied. While they are otherwise entertained, parents can relax with a tasting flight (or a bottle for that matter) knowing it’s money very kindly spent.
