Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but many families have different inclinations when it comes to nicknames at home. Parents call their children various names that range from the cute and funny to the ridiculously weird. And I think it’s okay. Parents have dibs on their children’s names and whatever they choose to christen them sticks for a very long time, at least until they start revolting.

Husbands and wives also have pet names for one another. Often, names they call each other could even be used to interpret the partner’s mood.

Honey

Boo

Bae

Babe

Those are good signs that everything is fair in the relationship. Sometimes, it’s a good sign that maybe there could be some action in a full moon. But when she starts using your first and last name in a single sentence and starts to sound like your mum? Then you know there’s trouble.

But, hey, the dynamic is expected. It’s predictable and traditional. There’s a minimal amount of pet names children can call their parents. For the most part, we have Daddy, Papa (Baba), Pops, Dad, and by his first name when the parent is a new step parent trying to gain the partner’s children’s endearment—at least that’s what I see in the movies. Then for the mothers, we have Mum, Mommy and Mama. There’s just some unspoken rule that the names don’t go beyond these.

But what happens when children start to break the rules? What happens when children begin calling parents Honey, Boo and…Babe. Yes, Babe! That’s my predicament and there seems to be no way around it. Let me give you some background, so you’ll understand why I feel it’s weird.

An Introduction to African Naming

It takes several years in the typical African family before children find out their parent’s real names. If you ever did find out their names, it was probably on some loose documents. I found out my parents’ names from their wedding invitation card I found lying among some old papers. I think I was around 11 years old at the time.

Here’s how it goes down in Yoruba Culture in Nigeria. From the moment you get married and start having kids, your entire identity centers around either the name of your first child or where you live. So, my elder brother’s name is Ayo. To every family member, especially the second generation, my parents were no longer Olufemi and Olaitan but were now called Daddy Ayo and Mummy Ayo respectively.

And that was the same for all my aunts and uncles. I never knew their first names. It was Mummy Ikeja, Mummy Ikorodu, Mummy Isolo, Daddy Moyo instead of their first names. I remember when I heard one of the elder cousins referring to my aunt, whom I had known for years as Mummy Temidayo by a different name. I was like, “Whoa, is that her first name?” So I thought, hey, Aunty Bose sounds way cooler than Mummy Temidayo, at least, it was less of a mouth full.

I received the lecture of a lifetime the day I tried calling her Aunty Bose. That’s when I knew there were rules behind the names and that the ruling nomenclature wasn’t by default. Then I knew that it was either Mummy Temidayo or Mummy Ikeja (Ikeja is where she lived). The only exception to this rule was when you knew the aunt or uncle before they married or started having children. Of course, in that case, the aunt or uncle didn’t have a child to steal their identity. Now let’s get into the bizarre stuff.

My Christening & the Pet Name that Won’t Go Away

My wife and my brother’s wife are quite close. For some reason, they both decided to call my elder brother and me the same pet name: Babe. My wife had decided earlier before we started having children that we weren’t going to follow tradition. That meant no changing our identities to prefixes of our first child’s name and no naming ourselves after a location. But with the use of a pet name, our children won’t still know our first names, which was cool.

It started with “Babe” to my wife and “Daddy” to my daughter. That seemed like a relatively simple and logical arrangement that didn’t seem to stray too far from tradition. But now it seemed the tables have turned and tradition has flipped on its head.

Now, I’ve become Babe to everyone! My daughter calls me Babe like it’s my first name.

“Babe! I need a snack!”

“Babe! Please, I’m hungry!”

I hear my brother is facing the same thing too. His son calls him Babe!

So do I sit her down and give her the same lecture I received years ago? Will being strict about what she calls me cause a strain in our relationship?

Well, she’s just six anyway. She’ll probably outgrow it, right?

Meghan Markle celebrated Prince Harry’s 35th birthday with a special Instagram pic collage—and it included a never-before-seen photo of the the new mum, dad and baby Archie.

Even though the couple have chosen to remain fairly private (for Royals) they’ve released a few family photos. That is, a very few family photos. This makes Markle’s IG post a welcome addition.

The bday collage includes nine sentimentally sweet pics, including a shot of a baby Prince Harry with Princess Diana, one as a teen with big brother Prince William, a wedding pic and an intimate family moment at Archie’s July christening.

Markle also added a heart-felt caption, writing, “Your service to the causes you care so deeply for inspires me every day. You are the best husband and most amazing dad to our son. We love you.”

While the world’s eyes were on baby Archie’s christening, another royal kiddo was also making headlines. Prince George recently took to the courts—with a private lesson by tennis superstar Roger Federer!

Forget about taking tennis lessons at the local community club. When you’re a royal, you get a true pro as your coach.

According to reports, Federer took a break during Wimbledon play to visit Prince William and Kate Middleton’s eldest at the family’s home in Berkshire. Like any other five-year-old, George isn’t exactly ready for Grand Slam action, but it looks like the young Prince is well on his way to learning how to play.

Federer reportedly said of giving George tennis lessons, “At that stage it’s all about just touch the ball, it’s already good. Same with my boys.” He also added, “His mum has always enjoyed their tennis. I hope that he’ll still say the same in a few years’ time.”

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Won’t Reveal Baby Archie’s Godparents

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie is the fourth royal little christened in the past few years—following on the heels of his cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Even though the official pics of Archie’s, George’s, Charlotte’s and Louis’s christenings may look fairly similar, there are some notable differences. Unlike his cousins, Archie’s big day was not an entirely public event, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex expressing their desire to have a private, intimate celebration for close family and friends.

Archie’s small-sized event didn’t share a venue with any of his cousins. With a guest list limited to 25, the ceremony was held at Queen Elizabeth’s private chapel at Windsor Castle. Prince George and Prince Louis were christened at St. James’s Palace’s Royal Chapel and Princess Charlotte had her ceremony at Sandringham’s St. Mary Magdalene church in Norfolk.

When it comes to the godparents, Kate Middleton and Prince William announced a lengthy list of seven close friends prior to Prince George’s christening. Likewise, the royal parents announced five godparents before Princess Charlotte’s christening and six for Prince Louis. Breaking from tradition, Markle and Prince Harry have kept mum on the names of Archie’s godparents.

Despite the differences, there are some similarities between Archie’s christening and his cousins’ ceremonies. Baby Archie’s christening dress echoed the ones worn by his cousins. Like son, like mother—Markle’s cream-colored Dior dress was also reminiscent (at least in hue) of Middleton’s christening day fashion choices.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Celebrate One-Year Anniversary with Precious Pics

It looks like the world’s wait is over when it comes the newest Royal’s future godparents, or is it? Buckingham Palace recently revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to keep this info private, much to our chagrin.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex aren’t exactly an in-the-spotlight couple (for as much as royalty can stay out of the media’s eye). Even though they’re very public figures, the couple wants a quiet christening for baby Archie.

The event itself includes a small gathering of 25 family and friends and, according to a statement by Buckingham Palace, “the godparents, in keeping with their wishes, will remain private.”

The ceremony will take place on Jul. 6 in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle. Recent media statements from the Palace confirmed the couple will release at least a few pics of the event in the days following the ceremony, but don’t expect to see the godparents named in any of them.

New mum and dad Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are getting ready for an intimate christening ceremony for the adorable little Archie.

According to reports, the royal couple will hold the baby’s christening in Queen Elizabeth’s private chapel at Windsor Castle. A royal source told PEOPLE, Markle and Prince Harry “wanted an intimate, peaceful setting in a place with such a special connection to Her Majesty.”

And don’t expect a gaggle of guests. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are limiting the christening to 25 of their closest family and friends.

The unnamed royal source also told PEOPLE, “This is a beautiful milestone and they are excited to share it as a family first and then with the world.” Not only does this refer to the small size, but it also means the Royals will give us all a sneak peek into the christening—that is after the fact. Reportedly the new parents will share pics in the days after the Jul. 6 event.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Celebrate One-Year Anniversary with Precious Pics

It’s hard to believe an entire year has already passed since the newest royal baby Prince Louis was welcomed into the world, but the young royal has just turned one and his parents commemorated the moment with the release of some adorable photos.

From his birth and christening to a royal family Christmas card, Prince Louis has already spent plenty of time in from of the camera in his short year. None of his photos have been quite as adorable as the ones Prince William and Duchess Kate have shared in honor of his birthday however.

The photos feature a happy, smiling young prince, complete with rosy cheeks and two tiny teeth, playing in the garden of Anmer Hall, Norfolk.

In another photo shared by KensingtonRoyal, the official Instagram feed of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Louis looks a little more serious, but equally adorable in a dapper outfit with a collared shirt.

It won’t be long until this newly minted one-year-old will no longer be the baby of the royal family, with the impending arrival of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby just around the corner.

Prince Louis Is Already Getting So Big in New Royal Family Photo

On Sunday, Kensington Palace released Prince Louis’ official christening photos. And, as you would totally expect of the royal family, they’re absolutely stunning.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s third child was the center of England’s attention on Jul. 9. Little Prince Louis’ christening was a full-family event that included his mum and dad (obviously) along with plenty of other royalty.

The official portraits, taken by photographer Matt Holyoak, feature a who’s who of the British royal family. Pictured in the all-too-elegant family portrait are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (or as Louis knows them—mum and dad). Prince Louis’ big bro and sis (Prince George and Princess Charlotte), the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (a.k.a. Prince Harry and new bride Meghan Markle), the Prince of Wales (Louis’ grandfather, Prince Charles) and the Duchess of Cambridge.

The portrait didn’t just include the royals. Along with the various dukes, duchesses, princes and princess were Kate Middleton’s family—her parents Carole and Michael Middleton, as well as little sister Pippa Matthews and her husband James, and “little” bro, James Middleton.

The christening photos also included sweet pics of Prince William, Kate and their kiddos as well as two stunning photos of just mum and baby.

Noticeably absent from the family portrait? The Queen. Even though Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the christening, there is a gentle reminder of Louis’ great-grandmother in the pics. The fam photo includes a portrait of the Queen, hanging just over Michael Middleton’s shoulder!
