1. Sweetwater Bike Park

Behold the region’s first bike skills park for all levels of experience: Sweetwater Bike Park in Bonita! Freewheeling kids will revel in the freedom of riding their bikes in this adventurous setting which includes two flow trails, four jump lines ranging from beginner to expert, and a kid’s pump track. Other onsite attractions include a skill zone, kid zone, perimeter trail, and several shaded picnic areas––making the venue an ideal spot for meet-ups and special events.

2. Carlsbad Rail Trail

A wheel short ride. If you have a little one who is just learning how to ride a bike, then this .7-mile bike path in Carlsbad is your spot. Bonus: the path is fenced the entire way and away from cars. The trail is close to Carlsbad Village, so when you're done riding you can head to Cafe Topes for a cinnamon roll and breakfast burrito. Then, walk the village.

How to Get There: The trail begins at the end of Oak Ave. near State St. You can find parking nearby.

3. Carmel Valley Rec Center

Head to the Carmel Valley Recreation Center and you'll find a perfect spot for new bikers. The park has wide paths that are smooth for little learners. When the weather warms up, look up the pool schedule and take a cool dip in the pool after your ride.

4. Hidden Canyon Community Park

Beginning riders can practice going round and round in a safe environment at this gem of a park. Even more, there are two playgrounds, one for little kids and one for bigger kids to climb and swing after bike practice. Further, half-pints can bring their scooters or skates too.

5. Pacific Highland’s Pump Tracks

Up and down! Get on a roll at the Pacific Highland Pump Tracks made for bikes. It's free and open to the public. What's more, it's located in Pacific Highlands Park, so there's a playground and skate park nearby. Probably best for more experienced riders, as they need to navigate the rolling hills. There are skateboarders who use the tracks too, so be aware.

6. Scripps Ranch Rec Center

As easy as 1-2-3! With a flat, concrete, rectangle loop around two giant, grassy fields, this park is a good spot to take off the training wheels. The best part is, there's plenty of room to ride once your little one gets the basics down. When done you can head to the cool playground to cap off the day. The park gets busy on the weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is better.

7. 4S Ranch Park

If your little one is still on a wheel-less bike or just getting off the training wheels, then this park's for you. There's a giant circle that surrounds the playground. Just stand in the middle and watch. When done with the wheels, hit up the playground, it's shaded. Bring a picnic, you'll find tables.

8. Fay Avenue Bike Trail

We kicked the tires of this 1.2-mile (one-way) bike trail where you'll encounter palm trees and pretty water views. You and your crew wind through a quiet La Jolla neighborhood, then plan to make a playground pit stop for more fun. Most of the trail is paved, however towards the end it becomes a dirt road. Even though the ride is short, the views and landscaping are worth it.

How to Get There: Head to La Jolla High School and the path starts at Fay Ave. and Nautilus St. and ends at La Jolla Hermosa Ave.

9. Lake Murray Park

Park and ride. This 3-acre community park has a flat surrounding concrete walkway that is perfect for bikers on training wheels. First off, you can keep an eagle eye on their progress. After the ride, kids can play in the cool covered playground. Even more, for advanced family rides, Lake Murray has a 3.2-mile flat bike path for everyone to enjoy. Truly, you'll find many levels of bike riding here.

10. Solana Beach

If you have a little transportation expert in your brood, then this is the perfect path for you. Clocking in round-trip at about 2.8 miles, you start this bike trail where Via De La Valle meets the Coast Highway. The trail finishes at Ocean St. where you can turn around to get home. Safely separated from the main road, you'll find everything from trains and automobiles to healthy juice stops and pizza places in this locale. What's more, there's plenty of pretty artwork to inspire your ride.

How to Get There: Take the Via De La Valle exit off the I-5 freeway and head west to where it intersects with PCH. You can park on the streets nearby.

11. Mission Bay Park

Drive to Mission Bay Park for a family bike ride. This wide, flat trail meanders through Mission Bay. Begin from the parking lot off Clairmont Dr. and head South along the bike path. Also, there's plenty of room for everyone. If you can make the approximately 1.3 miles to the end, you'll find a great park that little riders will love. Even more, if the distance is too far, then just drive South along Mission Bay Dr. and park closer. There are restrooms along the bike path and near the parking lot.

How to Get There: From the I-5 freeway exit Clairmont Dr. Turn towards Mission Bay and a parking lot is straight ahead.

12. Coronado Island

Follow the mostly flat path around Coronado to take in the island's best sights. You zip under the Coronado Bridge, pedal around the golf course, and hit the strand to take in iconic views like the Hotel Del Coronado and Coronado Beach. It’s worth noting that Coronado’s 6 miles of bike paths alternate between paths and residential streets. But the good news is that the streets are wide and the locals are used to sharing the road with cyclists cruising the streets. You can BYOB (bring your own bike) for your riding adventure or hire one from the bike rental shops around the island. A good starting point is Coronado Tidelands Park at 2000 Mullinex Dr., Coronado.

13. Bayside Walk

A beautiful shoreline, wide open paths, and families enjoying the sunshine are just some of the things to entice you to the Bayside Walk. Start your journey at Crown Point Park then head along the specifically designed bike and pedestrian path for a flat, road-free ride. You’ll be able to cruise past Fanuel Street Park (a local favorite), and the beaches of Sail Bay and Santa Clara Point. It’s good to note this is a one-way track, so once you hit West Mission Bay Dr., you'll need to turn around and venture back the three miles.

Street access is available all along the Bayside Walk, but parking along the busy residential streets can be tricky at peak times. We suggest putting down pedals at Crown Point Park, Moorland Dr., San Diego, with its ample free parking in one of three lots.

14. Santee Lakes

Santee Lakes is perfectly set for a biking visit. Stroll through five miles of tranquil paved paths around the seven lakes and surrounding parkland. The kids will love that most of the ride is flat, but be aware there are a few hilly spots to tackle. If you don’t want to bring your own bikes, Wheel Fun Rentals will have you covered with a selection of cruisers, surreys, tandem bikes, and of course kids’ bikes.

15. Balboa Park

Start at the western edge of Balboa Park and meander through a tree-lined field far away from the high pedestrian areas of Balboa. This bike path from 1.5 to 4.1 miles is perfect for your beginning riders as they’ll love the flat paved pathways and the short distance. You’ll be able to see the occasional lawn bowl match happening or doggy families on their way to the dog park just south of this bike trail. Also, there aren’t any restrooms directly on this bike route, so if nature is calling, you’ll need to head east on El Prado and venture into the main buildings within the park.

How to Get There: There is free parking available on Balboa Dr. Once you start your ride, be sure to follow the #1 round green trail markers to stick to the right path. If you want to extend your ride and pick up an extra three or so miles around the park’s museum and gardens, follow the #2 square light orange trail markers.

12. San Diego Children's Discovery Museum

Looking for an indoor playground near Escondido? This pirate ship and slide that's enclosed by a nautical-like gate is a choice spot. Kids can prepare play food in the ship's rear galley before venturing to the lot's backyard where bubble tables and a stage with foam blocks await. When they've grown hungry for snacks prepared by you, there are some picnic tables by the garden where they can fuel up before romping around the shaded archeological digging site.

13. Gymboree

Classes at Gymboree Play & Music are arranged by age for kids five and younger, so your little ones will experience age-appropriate activities with their peers. 14. Kid City at Fleet Science Center

Consider exploring Kid City on a Residents' Free Day, the first Tuesday of each month, when admission is on the house. The second floor five and under play area is smaller than others on this list, but it's enough to keep the younger set well entertained. A grocery store with a moving conveyer belt sits prominently in the middle and little shopping carts may be seen whizzing down the room's main street. Babies will gawk with wonder as their plastic ball gets sucked up by a tube and they'll eagerly watch as toddler learners watch their ball filter through wheels and various contraptions that carry them up, down, and around the wall.

15. Altitude

Bounce it out! The dedicated kids' court makes this indoor trampoline spot a must-do for little tykes. Even more, there are plenty of activities for bigger kids––like trying the trapeze that lands in a foam pit. 5 Perfect Days of Family, Food and Fun in South Carolina

Every family looks for that perfect vacation spot that offers relaxation and a ton of family-friendly fun. Add a few spectacular hidden gems, delicious food and epic natural beauty, and you’ll discover South Carolina.

Head to South Carolina to relax on miles of pristine beaches, take a family hike on a scenic waterfall trail and get lost on the streets of a charming small town. There’s always something new to discover in the Palmetto State, and we’ve rounded up all the things to see and do on a five-day family road trip.

Day 1 — Charleston

Start your family getaway outside Charleston. Grab a coffee and a pastry at Clockwise Coffee for breakfast while you shop next door for local treats at Carolina Cider Company. Or start your vacation off slow while you rock on the porch swing together.

Drive an hour toward the shoreline, and you'll end up at Botany Bay Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area on Edisto Island. To say this boneyard beach is spectacular is an understatement. After you hike through a beautiful wetland (easy for young and old legs alike), you'll find a shell-covered beach with massive driftwood sculptures—plan to arrive early in the day so you can explore the beach during a lower tide.

The beach is the perfect spot for a family picnic, but you can also head ten minutes away to Whaley's, where there's a different seafood-filled lunch special every day of the week. If you aren't into fish, there's something on the menu for everyone.

After lunch, head to the Edisto Island Serpentarium for alligators, turtles, snakes and lizards. The reptile lover in your family will adore this family attraction. With closing time at 4 p.m., you'll have plenty of time to explore after lunch.

When everyone in your crew is ready for dinner, take a quick seven-minute drive to The Seacow Eatery, where you can sit around a picnic table and enjoy the evening breeze. Or, order takeout and drive two minutes to Edisto Beach State Park for a beautiful sunset spot during extended park hours, which is open until 8 p.m. during daylight savings time.

Day 2 — Columbia

When you're ready to hit the road again, begin making your way to Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. Known as the "Soda City" by locals (which received its nickname from the original abbreviation of Columbia to "Cola"), this Midlands-based city is filled with endless family-friendly activities that'll make your kiddos want to say forever.

As you make your two-hour drive from the coast, be sure to carve out time for a pit stop at Congaree National Park. Home to the oldest and largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern U.S., Congaree will make you feel like you're strolling through a real-life fairytale. 

You will first want to stop at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center to get situated and pick up a Junior Ranger Book to fill out along the way. Next, we recommend you start with the Boardwalk Loop Trail. This 2.4-mile boardwalk takes you through surprisingly different landscapes and is stroller and wheelchair accessible, too. Take along a self-guided tour sheet to read about the area at each numbered spot along the trail.

Next, enjoy a filling meal at The Devine Cinnamon Roll Deli for their mouth-watering, freshly-made cinnamon rolls. The secret to their customer-favorite recipe? They opt for a special Hawaiian sweet bread recipe. You can also nosh on a NYC pushcart (an all-beef hotdog in natural casing that gives a snap with every bite) while your children enjoy the ultimate grilled cheese panini.

After lunch, make your way to EdVenture Children's Museum, the largest children's museum in the South. Home to over 350 hands-on activities, the museum is perfect for curious minds who love to explore— and touch everything. EdVenture features nine world-class exhibit galleries, a library, learning laboratories, resource centers and more to keep your children occupied for hours.

Top off the day with dinner at Pasta Fresca for fresh, made-from-scratch pasta and sauces. Your pickiest of eaters will enjoy the delicious buttered noodles and parmesan cheese plate, but if they're feeling daring, they should try the ever-so-delicious Fettucine alfredo. For moms and dads, we recommend the restaurant's fan favorite: chicken and spinach lasagna. With a unique twist on a classic dish, Pasta Fresca's recipe features spinach and ricotta cheese layered with pan-sauteed chicken that's doused in their house-made béchamel sauce. It's then topped with mozzarella and baked to perfection. Once it comes out piping hot from the oven, it's smothered in a creamy marinara. Talk about amazing.

Day 3 — Columbia

Begin closing out your Columbia adventure at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, which is ranked as one of the best in the country, for an up-close view of over 2,000 animals, including gorillas, lions and even koalas. Let your youngsters try their hands at rock wall climbing and ziplining for an added layer of fun, but don't leave without checking out the breathtaking botanical garden.

For any budding astronomers in your clan, opt for the South Carolina State Museum instead. The state-of-the-art attraction has an impressive digital dome planetarium and a vintage telescope, allowing your kiddos to explore outer space.

To fuel up again before the next adventure, head to Burger Tavern 77. You'll find it hard to pick from 77 different burger toppings, but we believe, the more the merrier! Wash down your meal with a root beer float, known for being one of the best in town.

Then, head to Main Street in downtown Columbia for a free guided tour of the South Carolina State House, happening from 9:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays and on most Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Your family will learn about the impressive history, civics, art and architecture of the building, and also get a look at where the actual legislative and executive branches meet. It's like taking a walk through history.

For an adventurous dinner, download the SC BBQ Trail Map and create your own food tour with the best BBQ joints in the area. Our favorites are Palmetto Pig (an all-you-can-eat-buffet!) and Home Team BBQ (try their "most life changing ribs," as described by Esquire magazine).

Pro Tip: Carve out a few hours for epic tubing or kayaking at Saluda Shoals Park for a thrilling experience you won't regret. For tots, head to Saluda Splash, a zero-depth water playground.

Day 4 — Greenville

Wrap up the final two days of your family road trip in Greenville, South Carolina, which is a 90-minute drive north of Columbia. Start your day at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery. Owned by two local moms, their mission is to buy, sell and cook fresh, local food to support a sustainable food system and provide a community space where people come together to celebrate meals. All the food is delicious, and half of the cafe is outside with a kids' play area.

You'll love Falls Park on the Reedy, just ten minutes up the road in downtown Greenville. The 50-foot waterfall is the centerpiece of the park and a great spot to enjoy nice weather and good company. You can't visit this park, however, without walking around the floating suspension bridge, Liberty Bridge. 

If your kids need to run off some more energy and grab a bite, head eight minutes up the road to Runway Cafe, where everyone can watch planes take off and land while they play on the fenced-in, aviation-themed playground. All the food is delicious, and half of the cafe is outside with a kids' play area along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. You’ll definitely see bikers gathering here for a mid-ride snack.

Pro Tip: Rent or bring bikes of your own for the afternoon and kick off on a biking adventure after lunch down the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a scenic and mostly flat 135-mile path that runs through Greenville and beyond!

Day 5 — Greenville

Before you say goodbye to South Carolina, start your day early at The Children's Museum of the Upstate. As the seventh-largest children's museum in the nation (and 10th-largest in the world!), it boasts three floors and more than 80,000 square feet of interactive exhibits. Your children will love the art studio, multi-story climbing structure, child-scaled grocery store and adorable teddy bear clinic, to name a few.

Grab a pick-me-up meal at Biscuit Head, a not-just-for-breakfast eatery that adds a unique touch to biscuits by creating delicious, hearty Southern sandwiches. One bite will already have you asking for seconds.

Finish your family vacation with a fun scavenger hunt down Main Street. Nine bronze mice are waiting on either side of the road and ready for adorable photo ops. It's a great way to keep kids engaged as you explore the shops on Main Street. And no stroll down Main Street would be complete without a stop at Spill the Beans, an innovative coffee house and creamery. Japanese American Museum of Oregon

Located in the northwest Portland neighorhood, the Japanese American Museum of Oregon [JAMO] strives to educate the public about Japanese emigrants and their descendants, also known as the Nikkei. The idea for JAMO was built from the Issei Appreciation project, to preserve the stories of the Oregon Japanese immigrants, and the first iteration of the museum was established in 1990 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The OCC is a tight-knit organization that seeks to strengthen the Portland Chinese community through civil, political, religious, and cultural preservation. 

Oregon Korea Fund [OKF]
Founded in 1995, the OKF seeks to provide support for Korean heritage, communities, businesses, and families through the support of donations and grant work!
