This SNL Macy’s Ad parody should be required yearly holiday viewing

You’re not the only parent dreading holiday outfit season—and Saturday Night Live is here to prove it. In this classic short, which should be required viewing by moms and dads every year, SNL parodies a Macy’s Christmas clothing sale commercial, revealing what everyone really thinks about those not-so-comfy kids’ clothes—and maybe about their spouses, too. This one’s NSFK (Not Safe for Kids) so watch it when you’ve got 2 minutes to yourself. LOL.

While you’re at it, keep the SNL hits coming with viewings of “I Got a Robe,” the forever mom holiday anthem, and the “Best Christmas Ever” skit, in which Matt Damon and Cecily Strong flashback to the hot mess that was their supposedly “perfect” and “magical” day.

After opening with men’s blazers and women’s cashmere sweaters, the faux ad kicks up the comedy as the voiceover says, “And for your little ones, Macy’s has the best of fashions that will have them saying…” Here’s where the cute kiddos go full-on into pure Christmas-time tantrums. One little girl stomps up and down, shouting, “It’s too hot!” A boy snarks, “It itches,” and a baby—well, the half-dressed tot just cries (how we feel this in our bones).

The mock-mercial previews just about every rewarding experience that awaits you, including, “wrestling your wiggly little monster into winter clothes” and “Merino sweaters that won’t fit over his head.” The parody goes on to advertise “hard, shiny shoes that hurt,” “all holiday rompers she’ll never get off in time,” “kids’ jackets so big and thick, they won’t fit in their car seats anymore,” “snow boots that are so hard to put on it will strain your marriage,” and, of course, “shirts with the wrong Frozen princess.”

If you’re in the heat of the holiday hustle, we suggest that you take a break and watch this so you can laugh-cry about the fun, festive tradition.

The Adventures of Tintin

This animated film is based on the comics of the same name. When young journalist TinTin buys a miniature version of a legendary pirate ship, he is unknowingly thrust into an adventure that involves traveling the world, looking for sunken treasure, and avoiding some nasty pirates. And he does it all with the help of his trusty sidekick Snowy.

The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2

While the Andrew Garfield version of New York’s favorite superhero might not be the favorite of the comic book film adaptations, these movies are still action-packed fun for the whole family.

The Secret of Nimh is one of the best 80s movies for kids

The Secret of Nimh (1982)
This classic '80s animated film about a group of intelligent rats who escape from an animal laboratory is suspenseful and rather dark. Several scenes include animal children in peril and a sword fight between rats ending in one death with a little blood. The worst part for sensitive viewers is a flashback shows the animated animals being imprisoned and injected with a needle.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Parents need to know that Ghostbusters is an iconic '80s movie that mixes a ton of humor (some of it fairly racy) with the plotline about catching scary ghosts (a few are skeletal and scary) and the possible end of the world. The scariest part is probably the large dogs with glowing eyes that attack and possess two characters, though the now-dated special effects may not faze older kids.

Recommended for ages 11 & up

E.T. is one of the best 80s movies to watch with kids

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T. is an outstanding family movie—one of the all-time best. Its themes of loyalty, trust, and caring are both affecting and easy to understand, and Elliott and E.T.'s extraordinary friendship is one of cinema's most enduring. After more than 25 years, E.T. continues to tug at heartstrings and prove Spielberg is a master storyteller.

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

A Christmas Story is one of the best 80s movies of all time

A Christmas Story (1983)
Part of the appeal of this must-see holiday classic, based on the memoirs of humorist Jean Shepard (who narrates), is the authenticity of the 1940s period detail, much of which will seem bizarre to kids today. But what is really engaging is his feel for the timeless details of childhood.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

The Neverending Story is one of the best 80s movies to watch with kids

The NeverEnding Story (1984)
Both children and adults will enjoy this film for its special effects, beautiful scenery, and colorful characters. Most of all, The NeverEnding Story's message of daring to dream and soaring to new heights through books is a powerful one that kids of any age can relate to.

The Princess Bride is one of the best 80s movies of all time

The Princess Bride (1987)
Simply put, The Princess Bride is stuffed full of every thrilling element of a classic romantic adventure—princes, villains, evil geniuses, giants and giant creatures, sword fights, revenge, kidnapping, and a rescue on white horses—and it coats them all in delicious humor.

Willow is one of the best 80s movies of all time

Willow (1988)
For today's Harry Potter generation, a viewing of Willow will surely be of interest. The adventure is easy to follow and full of school-age humor, and two forest fairies provide comedy with their slapstick, strange voices, and snappy one-liners. Lucas' fantasy has interesting-looking characters and villages, gothic castles, and, most of all, magic. Willow is an excellent choice to give young kids a taste of fantasy.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

Back to the Future (1985)
Brimming with lighthearted energy, Back to the Future mixes science fiction with romantic comedy for a classic 1980s blockbuster. It should come as little surprise that Steven Spielberg executive-produced it. Like so many of his films, it manages to blend heady science fiction, humor, adventure, and romance while retaining an exuberance and a sense of wonder familiar to anyone under the age of 12.

Recommended for ages 10 & up.

Flight of the Navigator (1986)
In Flight of the Navigator, a 12-year-old Miami boy is abducted by an alien in 1978 and ends up eight years into the future. It's all very well done, with clever shots that make everyday objects look like they just might be from a spacecraft and very affecting scenes between David and his new, older family. This is a charming film, with enough drama and humor to please almost any viewer.

Recommended for ages 10 & up.

Chariots of Fire (1981)
This film is wonderfully evocative of the time and place, with superb performances. Chariots of Fire shows us the source of two runners' determination: for one, a need to prove his worth to himself and the society that discriminates against him; for the other, a way of connecting to God. The film deservedly won the Oscars for best picture, screenplay, costume design, and music.

Recommended for ages 11 & up.

Mindy Kaling’s ‘Velma’ Teaser Pays Homage to ‘Scream’ in the Best Way

The HBO Max series will be an adult animated comedy

Scooby and Shaggy usually steal the show when it comes to any Scooby-Doo episode, but that’s about the change thanks to a new HBO series. Together with Warner Bros. Animation, the show is all about the “unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang, Velma Dinkley.”

Velma is slated to be a ten-episode series for the first season and the leading lady will be voiced by executive producer, Mindy Kaling. Before the kiddos get too excited, parents should know this is styled as an adult animated comedy series and likely won’t be appropriate for young viewers.

The first teaser trailer shows an outrage Velma sending an email to HBO Max about a new Judy Jetson show, a “genre bending comedic origin story.” It quickly transitions to a scene reminiscent of cult classic horror film, Scream, in which Velma engages in a serial killer who is inside her house about how classics should never be changed. Cue the knife!

HBO Max’s logline for the show states it is an “original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.” Viewers will notice that Scooby will actually not be a part of the series.

“It felt like what made it a kids’ show was Scooby-Doo. That coincided with Warner Bros. Animation saying, ‘Hey, you can’t use the dog,’” showrunner Charlie Grandy revealed at Comic Con. “So we were like, ‘Great, this works out well.’”

Velma Cast

According to Variety, Kaling revealed the cast of Velma at New York Comic Con. Leads will include features Sam Richardson as Shaggy, Constance Wu as Daphne and Glenn Howerton as Fred.

Ali Wong’s New Netflix Special Will Make Working Moms Feel Seen

If loving Ali Wong‘s third original comedy special Don Wong on Netflix is wong, we don’t want to be right.

With her signature fearlessness, the comedian, writer and actress reveals her wildest fantasies, the challenges of monogamy, and how she really feels about single people, per the official release—and it debuted on Valentine’s Day, naturally.

Wong kicks off her set admitting that she’s “very jealous and bitter” that men with any success in comedy get to date models and actresses, while women—at the top of their game—might find themselves dating a 2-star Yelp magician. “Because when you are a woman with money, power, respect—your romantic options do not expand. They decline.”

She continues to illustrate—in typical raunchy and hysterical color—how gender, power and lies go hand-in-hand. “The lies will set you free.”

“Young men want a woman that’s chill,” she quips. “I have never ever wanted to date a man that was chill, because chill don’t pay the bills.”

She relates the story of a nephew who’s debating breaking up with a woman who’s a “boss at work” so she comes home and thinks she can boss him around. “Aunti Ali” reminds him that “that’s gonna happen.” And the schooling continues. “All women are very good at being extremely unpleasant and holding your happiness and self esteem hostage until we get what we f’ing deserve…That is a superpower that we evolved to compensate for our earning potential. You can’t tell any woman what to do, so you might as well pick the one that can give you health insurance, ok?”

The best moments in Ali Wong’s new Netflix special Don Wong are the ones where her jokes get a little uncomfortable, but they’re so honest and delivered in a lighthearted way that you can’t help but laugh. And while she takes you on a weird journey down fantasy lane and philanderer’s alley, Don Wong ends with reassurance that, in fact, Wong does love her husband, and that he’s a great, supportive guy. And based on the hour before that revelation, you’ll be relieved.

The special is Wong’s third for Netflix after Ali Wong: Baby Cobra (2016) and Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife (2018), and you can stream it now.

The animated special celebrates the dark side of the galaxy and packs plenty of names and voices Star Wars fans know and love. Expect to hear Tony Hale, Christian Slater, Jake Green, Dana Snyder and many more. Now you can also get your first look at the official trailer, which features Darth Vader’s loyal servant Vaneé (Hale) spinning three spooky stories.

LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales takes place after The Rise of Skywalker and follows Poe and BB-8 as they make an emergency landing on the volcanic planet Mustafar. Here they meet Graballa the Hutt who is renovating Darth Vader’s castle into an all-inclusive luxury hotel (comedy abounds).

Along with Graballa’s mechanic, Dean, the characters head deep into the castle and listen to spooky stories about artifacts and villains across the galaxy. Can Poe and BB-8 quash an “ancient evil” from coming back to life and escape the spooky hotel?
