More than any time in recent history, parents are having to play the role of both family leaders and school teachers. Kids today are spending more time at home because of homeschooling. This can be problematic for any family that has become accustomed to dropping their kids off at school. It often serves as a much-needed respite for both the mother and father and is also a convenient way to find care for your kids if you are working. However, if you are a parent that is now homeschooling your children, you need to develop certain routines. The following information provides successful homeschool routines that any parent can follow to improve their ability to teach their children.

Schedules Are So Important
When a child goes to school, they are going to do so at predetermined times. There is often a mad rush for the parents, trying to get their child onto a bus or into the car so they can be dropped off before the bell rings. However, when you are homeschooling your kids, it is often difficult to maintain a rigid schedule. We are conditioned to rely upon the scheduling of our local school, yet we can still provide them with structured learning. By determining when school will start, and how long each class will be, we can create something very similar at home.

Routine Breaks throughout the Day
Just as a traditional school will provide breaks for the students, parents need to consider doing the same. Although it would be nice to save time and help them learn as fast as possible, not every child is going to understand the information. If you have a child that does require special care at school, such as extra tutoring, you will now need to provide that service as well. To make this easier for both you and your child, you need to have routinely scheduled breaks throughout the day. This will give both of you a much-needed respite from the demands that homeschooling will require. It will also allow your children, as well as the homeschool parent, to be more refreshed as they move from topic to topic.

Proper Preparation before the Next Day’s Lessons
Teachers are well aware of how much prep time goes into preparing for lessons. They will have a curriculum that they must follow, and to deliver the information in a sustained manner, they must first go over the subject matter. This can take hours, depending upon your familiarity with certain topics, as well as the amount of information that needs to be conveyed. You will have to prepare the quizzes, tutorials, and other forms of educational training, in the most helpful way. That is why it is important to spend at least one hour prior to school starting at home to ensure that this information is delivered properly.

Always Have Scheduled Testing Times
Perhaps the most important aspect of going to school is having deadlines. This is well known to those that take AP courses in high school or college courses at the local university. The amount of material that needs to be consumed and learned each week demands that deadlines be set in place. When your child has a deadline for completing their assignments, they will be more inclined to be highly focused. As with anything to do in life, you need to have reliable homeschool routines and deadlines to help provide this aspect of the educational process.

How to Address Issues That Your Child May Have
It is possible that your child may not understand the information that you will be presenting to them each day. This is a common occurrence for any teacher that has taught in a classroom. They are well aware that most students learn and consume information at different rates. Since you will know your child better than anyone, you will likely have a general idea of what their strengths and weaknesses are. By planning in advance to provide extra tutoring for these subjects, you can ensure that they will move forward and reach deadlines right on time. This will also require the parent to spend extra time learning each topic. The more proficient they are with the material that must be taught, the easier it will be to provide helpful information.

Homeschooling is something that not everyone can do. It requires determination, planning, and the gift of being an educator. If a parent hasn’t taught in the classroom before, they can quickly learn how to become one. Every day, parents across the world are educating their children, and these skills can be used when teaching their kids at home. As long as there are homeschool routines, deadlines, and enough preparation for the lessons, they will be successful as a teacher for their children.

Here’s Why Homeschooling Actually Makes More Sense in the Digital Age

A little about me : I’m a thirty-something Mom to one boy and one girl. I blog about all things to do with being a mom and encorage moms to take care of themselves during postpartum.

I am a father of two boys and two girls and I’m constantly surprised at how different they are. One area that these differences are apparent is in how they express their emotions. My girls have no problem being open about their feelings and they’ve become better at articulating what they want the older they’ve become.

My sons seem firmly lodged on the other side of the scale. While they were more expressive when they were younger, nowadays they’ve become more and more reticent. It’s especially hard to get my eldest son to open up about whatever’s going on in his life.

As their dad, I know firsthand how hard it is for men and boys to talk about how they feel. Society has conditioned us to believe that experiencing and showing certain emotions is a sign of weakness and that’s not what “real men” do. As a result, boys end up bottling up their feelings and feel increasingly isolated from their families and the rest of society. They feel they have no one to talk to and that no one will understand what they’re going through. This then leads to increased incidences of teen depression, suicide and mental illness in adolescent boys and young men.

Interpreting My Sons’ Emotions

I decided to do things differently when raising my sons. However, before I could help them work through and express varying emotions, I first had to learn how to read and interpret them.

For instance, I noticed that my youngest son always had a physical complaint whenever he was faced with a new experience. He often had a headache or tummy ache on the first day of school or before a test. I gradually learned that this meant he was anxious or nervous.

My eldest son expresses nervousness or anxiety differently. He plays baseball and doesn’t like showing vulnerability of any kind. So to hide his feelings, he often gets defensive when I ask him how he feels about an upcoming game.

My sons both feel more comfortable expressing their feelings if we chat while doing something else. I’ve learned to have conversations with them while working on the car or doing some DIY projects together. This way they don’t feel pressured so they can relax and open up.

Helping My Boys To Express Themselves

After figuring out how to read their emotions, the next step was helping my boys learn to handle and express their feelings in healthy ways. Here are some of the things I’ve done:

1. Setting a good example. Kids always look to their parents for cues on how to behave and my sons are no different. With this in mind, I tried to set an example worth emulating. I started by getting comfortable talking about what I felt and becoming a more expressive person. Once my boys saw that I wasn’t afraid to share my feelings they started to open up a lot more.

2. Providing a safe environment at home. With society doing its best to convince my sons to bury their emotions, I knew they needed a place where they feel safe being themselves. At home, my boys know that they are free to explore and discover their varying emotions. I don’t tell them what they’re supposed to feel but I instead provide lots of opportunities for them to grow emotionally.

3. Listening to them. In addition to encouraging my sons to express their emotions, I have learned to listen to them even if I don’t agree with what they’re saying. I try not to judge or invalidate their feelings and instead offer support and room for them to vent.

4. Setting boundaries. Although my boys are free to embrace and express all their feelings, I’ve made sure that they understand the difference between feelings and behavior. They know that they’re responsible for their actions and they can choose how to respond to their emotions. So while feeling angry and upset is okay, they know they’re not allowed to hit or lash out at others because of those feelings.

The outside world is trying its best to toughen up my sons. I hope that setting them a good example and showing them that it’s okay for a man to talk about and show emotions will, in turn, help them be more comfortable sharing and expressing their own feelings.

In a recent essay for The New York Times Parenting section, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian got real about career expectations, becoming a father and paternity leave.

While Ohanian was lucky enough to take 16 weeks of paid paternity leave after his wife, tennis star Serena Williams, gave birth to daughter Olympia in 2017, not all dads are as fortunate.

In his essay, Ohanian writes, “Before Olympia was born, I had never thought much about paternity leave and, to be honest, Reddit’s company policy was not my idea. Our vice president of people and culture, Katelin Holloway, brought it up to me in a meeting and it sounded O.K., so why not?”

But after Williams’s complication-filled delivery of Olympia, Ohanian realized just how important his paid paternity leave was, writing, “Nothing could have dragged me away from my wife and daughter in those hours, days and weeks—and I’m grateful that I was never forced to choose between my family and my job.”

So why does Ohanian think men aren’t asking for paternity leave? He wrote, “The short answer is stigma. Men are conditioned to be breadwinners, exclusively—and another mouth to feed calls for more bread on the table (to say nothing of college tuition)—so off to work we go. Our sense of duty is often fear-based: Men assume their bosses will frown on paternity leave, so we don’t dare to go there.”

Underscoring the importance of the post-birth time for dads, Ohanian added, “I took my full 16 weeks and I’m still ambitious and care about my career. Talk to your bosses and tell them I sent you.” While a direct order from the Reddit co-founder may not score your S.O. paternity leave, it may start a conversation that’s all too necessary.

The cooler weather goes well with built-in fur coats, allowing many breeds and mixes to walk, run and play for long periods of time without heating up and tiring out.

As temperatures plummet, though, pet parents need to keep in mind how frigid weather—particularly for long periods of time—can be too much for even the hardiest of breeds.

How do I know if my dog is too cold?

  • A simple rule of thumb about whether your dog is cold is whether you feel cold. If you do, your dog likely does, too. Once thermometers drop and ice and snow become part of the daily forecast, be careful and consider these tips:

  • Paws in the snow and ice and can get cold very fast. Even though there are some thick-coated alpine dogs out there who love the snow, as household pets, they’re probably not conditioned for the cold weather.

  • Small dogs should wear coats or sweaters outside to keep them warm. Not only are the clothes adorable, but they’re also beneficial, especially for small, short coated dogs.

  • Booties are a good idea if you are going to be walking your pets on the sidewalks or where there’s ice or snow.

  • Use only pet-safe ice melters for defrosting your sidewalks and patios. Many common de-icers contain many different kinds of salts that are harmful to your pet if licked off their feet or coats. If you are walking your pet on public streets, you should consider putting protective booties on them.

  • If your pet does not wear booties when walked, be sure to clean off their feet and dry them well after walks to prevent ingestion of toxins.

  • Be sure to clean ice, snow, salt and sand from your dog’s feet and legs. Also, dry your dog’s belly if it gets covered in snow.

How long in the cold is too long for my dog?

Even if your dog seems to enjoy the cold weather and snow play, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. How much is too much? That depends. Different pets have different thresholds. Ultimately, it’s a judgment call—yours.

The best way to know how long in the cold is enough for your dog is for you also to be outside. When it gets too cold for you to tolerate, the same will likely be for them. When the temperature drops below freezing, limit your dog’s time outside to less than 15 minutes at a time.

It’s important to remember, too, that much like vehicles can heat up to extreme temperatures in the summer, they can also get extremely cold in the winter. Be careful when taking your dog on errands. You don’t want to leave them in the car for extended periods of time. Once the vehicle is turned off, the icy temperatures outside can quickly cool off the car’s interior, making it uncomfortable and even unsafe for your dog.

Common Winter Weather Issues that Affect Dogs

Just like humans, dogs can slip and fall on ice and snow. As a result, veterinarians see many torn ligaments in the winter. The knees are commonly affected and often the treatment requires surgery. It’s best to keep your pet on a leash outside and avoid buildups of ice where they — and you! — can slip.

If your dog is arthritic, keep in mind that it may be more difficult for him to move around in the winter. Be sure to make it easy for him to walk outside. Having to jump through the snow or walk on slippery, icy surfaces can lead to unnecessary pain and possible injury. If your dog is having a hard time, speak to your veterinarian about pain medications.

It can be a winter wonderland for your dog—if you’re careful.

Whether you live in or travel to a cold-weather spot this winter, there’s no doubt outdoor playtime can be a joyful time for you and your dog. Just keep in mind the risks involved when you expose your four-legged family member to ice, snow and cold. Even though they come with fur coats as standard equipment, that doesn’t mean they’re fully protected from all that Old Man Winter can deliver. Have fun—and stay warm!
