Let’s face it. Halloween is about scaring others and being scared. It is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year, but it can involve blood, gore, scary faces, loud noises, darkness, and going to stranger’s homes. Whoa! How does this fit with trying to keep children’s worry level low? With some understanding and pre-planning, the holiday can actually help children with anxiety. Here are some things to consider plus eight tips to decrease your children’s Halloween worries.

Learn Mastery over Fear

Although Halloween can be a great stressor for children and parents, it can also be the perfect time to address worries in a positive and skill-building way. Psychologists tell us that in order to master anxiety:

  • We must identify our fear
  • Eecide whether the feared event is harmful or not
  • If it is not harmful, then address the fear in a positive way
  • Keep building on the success experience

Here are two examples:

Last year, Zoe became very frightened by the scary costumes, the dark, and the noises at Halloween. This year, her parents went to look at costumes ahead of time to see that even really scary costumes were just fabric and plastic, not monsters. Then they spent time outdoors at night and made loud, scary noises for fun, showing Zoe that the dark and the noises were not harmful. Finally, together they came up with things Zoe could do when she feels afraid; like taking deep breaths, talking with her parents, and telling herself that Halloween scary things are not real. Also last year, Jonathan became very scared of a giant yard dragon decoration and he wouldn’t even walk down the street where it was. At the time, his parents wisely didn’t force him to go down that street, but later they found a costume similar to the dragon and let him play with it all he wanted. As he took the costume on and off and made-up games with the dragon, he learned that the dragon wasn’t real and he could master the fear.

Tips to Decrease Halloween Worries & Be Safe

There are specific things you can do this Halloween to lower your child’s (and your own) anxiety.

1. Even Dr. Fauci says it’s okay to trick-or-treat this year, but do have your kids wear a mask (not with their costume mask so they can breathe better) and stay outdoors. When you accompany them, bring a flashlight and hand sanitizer.

2. With your kids, take the time to learn where Halloween originated. It is a centuries old fascinating holiday where folks used to carve turnips, not pumpkins. 

3. Help your kids learn the difference between fantasy versus reality. Tell them that the scary costumes and decorations are for fun, with only people in the outfits. There are no real monsters. Go to a Halloween store ahead of time to look at all the costumes. Then practice mastery over fear by saying “These are just pretend and silly costumes. They won’t hurt anyone.” Your kids will quickly get the hang of it.

4. Involve your kids in Halloween’s activities like carving pumpkins and creating a Halloween costume.

5. Create new family traditions for Halloween. You can read books on scary tales of monsters, spiders, or bats that have happy endings. One good book is the Shrinking the Worry Monster, which will address monsters and worry at the same time.

6. If your kids melt down during a trick-or-treat visit; stay calm, reassure your child, and tell the hostess that your child is just learning about Halloween.

7. If you are the hostess at the door, keep germ contamination to a minimum. Wear a mask, you be the one to pass out individually wrapped candy, and do not invite kids indoors.

8. If you or your child really don’t want to go out to folks’ houses this year, that’s okay. Have a Halloween gathering in your house with your family and friends. It’s really about keeping a tradition and being joyful.

Halloween doesn’t have to be a major stressor for a family. In fact, it can be a great learning experience to help children gain skills in mastering fear. So go out, enjoy Halloween, and be sure to have fun!

Love your meat and cheese boards? You’ll want to pay attention to this announcement. Fratellli Beretta USA is recalling approximately 862,000 pounds of uncured antipasto products due to potential salmonella contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) made the announcement on Friday. The uncured meat trays were produced February 28, 2021 through August 15, 2021. Affected products are 24 ounce trays split into two 12 ounce packages: “UNCURED ANTIPASTO PROSCIUTTO, SOPPRESSATA, MILANO SALAMI & COPPA.” The UPC code is 073541305316.

After a larger salmonella outbreak in 17 states, the FSIS traced some of the illness reports back to the antipasto trays. Contamination with the bacteria can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever and may last four to seven days. Although most people recover at home, older adults, infants and those with weakened immune systems may require hospitalization.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Fortunately, there have been no illnesses reported yet.

If you live in Illinois, Maine, New York, or Wisconsin, check your blueberries! The FDA announced that Dole is recalling clamshell packages of fresh blueberries due to potential cyclospora contamination. It’s a parasite that can cause intestinal infection, including vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain.

The berries were packed between May 28 and June 9 and you can identify a problematic package by the UPC code or the product lot code (see the FDA release for the full product lot code list). Four UPC codes are affected:

  • 0 71430 01154 6
  • 0 71430 01151 5
  • 07143001150 8
  • 071430011155 3

If you find a package with one of these codes in your home, discard it immediately. No other Dole products are affected by this recall. If you have any questions, you can call the Dole Consumer Center at 1-800-356-3111, which is open 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported yet in association with the recall.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced a voluntary recall of Sabra Dipping Company, LLC 10oz. Classic Hummus due to a potential Salmonella contamination concern.

The current recall includes 2,100 cases of the 10oz. Classic Hummus with the UPC code 300067 produced on Feb. 20, 2021 between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. with the “Best Before” date of Apr. 26, 2021.

There are currently no reported illnesses or consumer complaints related to the recalled products. The FDA did find the presence of Salmonella in one tub of the hummus during a routine screening, prompting the voluntary recall.

Hummus distributed to the following states are included in this recall—Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Jersey, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

If you have the recalled Sabra Classic Hummus, don’t eat it. Return the affected products to the place of purchase for a reimbursement.

Check your fruit basket. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced that as a precautionary measure, ALDI is voluntarily recalling assorted peaches received from its supplier, Wawona Packing Company, due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Check your veggie bins. A salmonella outbreak that has infected more than 500 people in the United States and Canada has been traced back to onions grown in California. Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California is recalling Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions shipped from May 1, 2020 through the present.

The onions are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Onions were distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.

The onions were distributed in 5 lbs. carton. 10 lbs. carton. 25 lbs. carton. 40 lbs. carton, 50 lbs. carton. bulk, 2 lb. mesh sacks, and 3 lb. mesh sacks, 5 lb. mesh sacks, 10 lb. mesh sacks 25 lbs. mesh sacks, 50 lbs. mesh sacks under the brand names Thomson  Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion.

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve red, white, yellow, or sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc. or products containing such onions. If you cannot tell if your onion is from Thomson International Inc., or your food product contains such onions, you should not eat, sell, or serve it, and should throw it out.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections that may be linked to these onions, so Thomson International is recalling the onions out of an abundance of caution.  As of now no specific source of contamination or contaminated shipment has been identified, and FDA is also investigating other potential sources of contamination and has not yet reached a final conclusion.

Infections have been reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Consumers who have any Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions under the above brand names, or who cannot tell if their onions are from Thomson International, should immediately discard these products and disinfect any surfaces that came into contact with the onions.

*Update 7/2/20: Hy-Vee, Inc. is recalling an additional 12 salads across its eight-state region due to the potential that they may be contaminated with Cyclospora. The potential for contamination was brought to Hy-Vee’s attention when Fresh Express – which manufactures the product – announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) expanded its investigation of an outbreak of Cyclospora in the upper Midwest section of the United States. The 12 salads are in addition to the 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad product that Hy-Vee pulled last week after initial notification of the investigation. Hy-Vee now has 13 private label bagged salad products (all expiration dates) that are being recalled as a result.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Hy-Vee, Inc. and ALDI stores, in association with Fresh Express, Inc., are recalling several bagged garden salad products due to a potential contamination with Cyclospora. Fresh Express, the company that manufactures the salads for both stores, was notified that several of their private label products were being investigated by the FDA as being linked to a recent outbreak in the upper Midwest.

Neither stores have received any complaints of illnesses, and both are removing the affected products out of an abundance of caution. Keep reading to see all the products affected by this recall.

Hy-Vee is recalling 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salads distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. This includes all UPC’s and expiration dates. Customers should immediately throw away the product, return to a Hy-Vee store for a refund or call Customer Care representatives at 1-800-772-4098 with any questions.

ALDI is recalling all product codes of Little Salad Bar Garden Salads with use-by dates of May 16 to Jul. 4. These products were distributed in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin between May 1 and Jun. 19. Customers should discard any affected salad products or call the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll-free at 1-800-242-5472.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis, the illness caused by consuming Cyclospora, can start seven days after ingestion. They include watery diarrhea, nausea, low grade fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, cramping, weight loss and increased gas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recently announced a recall of over 2,000 pounds of Amity Packing Company raw ground beef products due to the possibility of contamination with extraneous materials. Representatives from Pre Brands, LLC did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment.

If you think you might have the recalled beef, read on for important information.

Recalled Product Description: Ground Beef

The recall includes one-pound vacuum-packed “Pre 95% LEAN/5% FAT GROUND BEEF” products produced on Jan. 6, 2020 that bear the establishment number “EST. 6916” and the lot code “0060.”

The products were shipped to retailers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Why the Beef Was Recalled

Pre Brands received two complaints, citing that the customers found clear, thin pliable plastic in the ground beef products. As of now there are no injuries or illnesses as a result of the recalled beef.

How to Tell If Your Beef Was Recalled

Check your fridge and freezer for the recalled beef. Look for the lot code “0060” and case code “11402” on the product label. The label also includes the use/freeze by date “01/31/2020.” The establishment code “EST. 6916” is printed on the right, front side of the beef’s packaging.

What Consumers Can Do

If you have the recalled product, don’t eat it. Throw the beef out or bring it back to the place of purchase. You can also contact Pre Brands at 1-844-773-3663 with questions about the recall.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a Food Safety Alert for ready-made hard-boiled eggs due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Following the initial alert, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an expansion of the recall to include additional products manufactured by Almark Foods at the company’s Gainesville, Georgia facility.

According to the CDC stats, the outbreak initially caused seven cases of Listeria in five states. According to the FDA’s website, “A more recent FDA sample from the facility also matched the outbreak strain, suggesting the possibility that the strain may have remained present in the facility.”

The eggs, produced by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia were packaged in plastic pails for use by food service operators. The eggs were sold to retailers, and not directly to consumers. This means consumers may not know if the eggs in products they’ve purchased are contaminated. Given the new information from the FDA, Almark voluntarily expanded the recall to include all hard-boiled egg products packaged for retail made by the Gainesville plant.

The current recall includes all eggs with “Best If Used By” dates through Mar. 2, 2020. The product used by dates have a “G” prefix, indicating that the eggs were packaged in the Gainesville, Georgia facility. For a full list of recalled products, visit the FDA’s website here. The FDA has also issued additional recall alerts for retailers, such as Trader Joe’s, for products that may contain the affected eggs.

Listeria can cause fever and flu-like symptoms in pregnant women. The bacteria can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or a potentially life-threatening infection in newborns. It can also cause headache, stiff neck, loss of balance, convulsions, fever, muscle aches or confusion in otherwise healthy children and adults. Symptoms often appear within one to four weeks after eating the contaminated food. This infection is treatable with antibiotics—making it important to contact your medical provider immediately.

The CDC had advised retailers and food service operators to stop using the peeled, hard-boiled eggs and wash/sanitize surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs. If you have concerns about where a product’s hard-boiled eggs came from, ask the retailer to verify they were not produced by Almark Foods. If the retailer doesn’t know, skip the egg-containing product entirely.
