Bures are wood-and-straw huts and there 25 to choose from with many different layouts available for families. You’ll find larger split-level bures where parents have a king bed and there is a section for the kids to sleep as well. A 2-bedroom layout includes a separate bedroom with attached bathroom that’s perfect when traveling with older kids.
No matter what layout you choose, they come with an outdoor deck and hammock that’s perfect for relaxing while the kids are at the Bula Club. You’ll love the indoor-outdoor feel of the bures where you can enjoy the sounds of the waves as you drift off to sleep.
What’s included with your stay at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort?
Jean-Michel Cousteau is an all-inclusive resort and your rate includes meals, non-alcoholic beverages, transfers from Savusava Airport, daily Bula Club for the kids, and tons of on-site activities like yoga, snorkeling, eco-walks, marine biologist talks, and so much more. Perhaps the best perk is the laundry service that will get your washed and folded clothes back to you in 24 hours. It’s a great way to keep your luggage to a minimum.
What is the kids club like at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort?
Just wait to be blown away. The Bula Club at JMCR offers care for kids from 2 months old up to age 12. There is a dedicated Bula Club just a short walk from the front desk where you’ll find water play areas, a pool with a mini water slide, sports courts, a kitchen and outdoor dining area, a playground, a zipline, a trampoline, and a hut where children can nap. It’s pretty much a kid paradise and we can understand why the kids love going here!
Care for babies and toddlers: For the littlest visitors ages 0-5, a dedicated nanny is assigned to each child for the duration of their stay. This nanny is available to provide care for the child from 8:30 a.m. -6 p.m. daily, after which one nanny is assigned per bure until 9 p.m. The nanny will stop by the breakfast table to make arrangements for the child for the day and find out what the family’s preferences are for napping, dining, and activities.
Care for kids ages 6-12: Kids in this age group are assigned a buddy during their stay. Buddy groups can have up to five kids and they have activities at the Bula Club throughout the day including games, water play, cooking classes, gardening, and so much more. They can participate in a Junior Chef Program where they visit the property’s organic garden, harvest produce, and assist kitchen staff in preparing lunch or dinner.
Kids can also participate in the resort’s amazing School Under the Sea Program. A daily schedule of activities centers around the day’s marine theme such as coral planting and sea creatures. Activities for the day can range from snorkeling, educational activities, a rainforest and waterfall tour, a local school visit, crafts, and learning about aspects of Fijian culture. Kids who complete the program get a “graduation” ceremony and a t-shirt to take home with them.
The Nannies/Mannies & Buddies: During our time at the property, we could really see the bond that formed between the nannies/buddies and their charges. Families told us that they returned to the resort year after year and their child would request the same buddy each time. There were even a few tears shed by kids when leaving the resort and having to say goodbye to their buddies. It really is a magical program with very caring people on staff who have worked at the resort for many years.
What activities are available at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort?
You can stay as busy or as relaxed as you’d like at JMCR. Every evening you’ll receive an agenda for the next day’s activities that could be anything from beachside yoga to night snorkeling. We recommend booking an afternoon at the spa and getting the Koko Rapture massage where you are massaged with fermented cacao paste and wrapped in banana leaves. It’s just as heavenly as it sounds!
Fijian Culture: There are many opportunities to learn about Fijian culture throughout your stay. The resort offers weekly village visits where you can meet local Fijians, purchase crafts, participate in the cava ceremony, and learn about their traditions. On-property activities during our stay include basket making, a Fijian lovo meal, and a cava ceremony amoung others.

Marine Activities: Savusavu Bay offers an underwater world that is waiting for you to explore when you visit Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. On the day we arrived, we enjoyed lunch and then immediately changed into swimsuits to head out on the afternoon’s snorkeling excursion, just a 10-minute boat ride away. The resort’s marine biologist accompanied us in the water and used a writing board to tell us the names of fish and creatures we spotted.
Scuba diving is available on-property for an additional fee and you can even get scuba-certified if needed. Other water activities included kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding, and our favorite—night snorkeling. We even got to see some bioluminescent creatures when we turned off our underwater flashlights!
Throughout our stay, the marine biologist presented talks about the coral reefs, sharks, and fish that make up the Fijian waters. She took us on a walk to the mangroves at the end of the property to talk about their importance and showed us how the property is actively replanting the mangroves (this is a favorite activity of the children).
Getting to Fiji
Fiji Airways flies direct from LAX (10.5 hours) and SFO (11 hours) to Nadi Airport. From there you board a much smaller plane for the hour-long flight to Savusavu Airport where you are greeted by friendly JMCR staff who will transport you to the property. The only real tricky part of this journey is navigating from the international terminal to the domestic terminal at Nadi Airport but the resort has someone there to meet you and walk you over (and the airport is quite small). If you have a lengthy layover at Nadi Airport on your way home, it is worth it to pay to get into the Fiji Airways lounge as it had lots of seating and offered a nice buffet and bar selection.
One of the most impressive things about our visit to Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort was how long the staff members had been working there—some of them over two decades! We really felt like we were joining their community when we visited and we heard many stories about how the property supported their staff members through difficult times, truly valuing them as people and not just employees. It was clear that the property placed a strong focus on supporting not only the staff but also the local community, which is rare for resort properties like this.

It can be easy to let the days slide on by without being intentional in our communication with our kids. But when you have a moment to slow down and focus, here are eight different ways you can tell your daughter how amazing she is, instill a measure of self-confidence, and cheer her on to become the best possible version of herself.
Catch her doing something good.
As parents, it’s natural to spend a lot of time correcting our kids or pointing out mistakes. Flip the switch and look for something positive.
“I really appreciate that you put the dishes in the dishwasher after school, and not just the sink.”
“Thanks for helping your brother with that math problem.”
“You only slept in five minutes past your alarm! Great job.”
Positive affirmation is contagious; she may start doing the same with you!
Point out something positive in a negative situation.
Failure is part of life, especially for people like pioneers or entrepreneurs who are stepping out on limbs, taking risks and forging new paths. If you want a daughter who’s not afraid to fail, begin now to assuage that fear by helping her see the upside of something that was less than successful.
“Well, we didn’t sell much lemonade, but your idea to sell those chewy brownies was brilliant. The one customer we did have needed two more cups of lemonade to wash it down!”
When children feel good about themselves and know that you’re okay with trying and failing (and, in fact, encourage it versus not trying new things at all), they’re more willing to persevere and take new risks.
“What are your roses, thorns, and buds today?”
At dinnertime or before bed, ask your daughter about one of her day’s successes (a rose), one problem or mistake (a thorn), and one thing she is looking forward to tomorrow (bud). You can share yours, too. It’ll help her see that there are peaks and valleys throughout life, and success isn’t about avoiding the downturns; it’s about how you handle them, bounce back, and move forward.
Show her the big picture.
If she wonders why she needs to take math even though she wants to write children’s books someday, or she complains about gym class and says she’s not a “natural athlete,” talk about why math skills and fitness are important in life, no matter what career path she chooses.
Sometimes kids can be a little myopic in their view of the world, but you can help encourage your daughter to see the bigger picture when you help her think outside her limited scope of vision. Sometimes the answer to “Why do I have to take this class?!” is simply, “in order to learn how to learn. Learning new things is something you’ll do for the rest of your life, and every single class you take can help you become a better learner.”
“What’s your plan?”
Ask her about how she plans on solving problems on her own. (The problems she’s capable of handling independently, anyway.)
“Mom, my soccer jersey is dirty, and I have a game tomorrow!” Instead of rifling through her hamper yourself, maybe answer, “That seems like something you’ll need to take care of in the next 12 to 24 hours then. What’s your plan?” Or, let’s say she’s promised the neighbors she’ll babysit for them on Saturday, but now she wants to back out because she got invited to a birthday party. “Hmm. How do you think it would be best to handle that?”
Problem-solving is an important and valuable skill for anyone, let alone a successful entrepreneur.
Help her identify her passions.
She might not know yet what it is that gets her pumped up or makes her heart beat fast (which is normal, of course), so helping her identify those things could be very helpful and supportive. “Hey, I noticed that you got a little choked up when we watched that video about the rescue dog. What would you think about volunteering at the Human Society once a month?” Or, “I love that you like to help me with dinner! Maybe we should take a cooking class together?”
“I’m proud of you.”
It’s one thing to praise or celebrate her accomplishments, but what about her character?
“You’re such a loyal friend, I’m so proud of how supportive and encouraging you are.”
“When you hugged your sister after her bad day at school yesterday, I was so proud of you. You have a big, compassionate heart.”
Most of us—kids especially—indulge in too much negative self-talk. When you tell your kids what’s great about them, you interrupt that internal negative loop and help build their self-confidence.
“I believe in you.”
Think about it for a second: Who was the last person who said that to you? A parent, your spouse, maybe a mentor? Those are four powerful words that probably aren’t spoken enough, and if you’ve ever heard them, they likely lifted your spirits, ignited a fire, re-fueled a waning determination, or simply gave you the chutzpah you needed to tackle a project or face an intimidating challenge.
Whether your daughter is risk-averse or a little daredevil, whether she’s innovative or prefers the status quo, whether she’s ready to take on the world or needs a nudge out of her comfort zone—she needs to hear this from you.

As convenient as an all-inclusive can be, one of the top reasons not to stay in one is so you have the opportunity to properly indulge in (and expose your kids to) Cancún’s outstanding dining scene. A reasonably priced tea can be tough to find. At Alice’s Tea Cup, your crew can enjoy a full English tea service without running up a huge bill. This local chain has three locations for a baby shower in NYC: one on the Upper East Side, one on the Upper West and one in Brooklyn Heights. Depending on your party size and preferred location, you can reserve a spot in the main dining room or rent a private room. Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon
If your goal is an authentic high tea with the mom-to-be, try Lady Mendl’s. Up the street from Gramercy Park, located inside The Inn at Irving Place, you’ll find a beautiful room with Victorian-style architecture and finishings. The inn offers a five-course tea with freshly baked scones and classic finger sandwiches. There is just one downside: the experience is costly. Pricing for the main tea salon, which holds up to 50 people, starts at $5000 for four hours on weekends. A more reasonable, yet still pricey, option is hosting the party in their formal library, which holds up to 20 guests. You can rent it starting at $2000 for up to 2.5 hours.
You can hold a proper high tea at the brand new Parisian Tea Room (opens September 10), the decor of which is inspired by owner Karen E. Lozner’s visits to tea rooms in the French capital. But Lozner’s other passion (fashion) means you can also hold a tea and sewing party! Three-hour events are for 8 to 12 people, with high teas including waitstaff, finger sandwiches, sweets and more.
Escape to the Italian countryside on Eataly Flatiron’s rooftop. A dining space that changes with the seasons transitions from a “flowering greenhouse” resplendent in bright pink blooms in spring to a celebration of winter beauty dubbed “Serra Alpina.” (It’s not as traditionally “girly” as the spring/summer iteration, but it’s still gorgeous.) Look for the springtime iteration to return in mid-April or so. Reservations can be made for groups of up to 25 people for a baby shower in NYC.

The Green Room, Jane’s private space, holds 40 guests for a seated, three-hour party. For $45 per person, everyone will get a starter, main course, family-style sides, coffee, tea, juice, & soda. The events coordinator will work with you to customize and personalize your menu. There is no shortage of delicious entrees; we recommend including the Farm House Popover, featuring scrambled eggs, smoked ham, Gruyère and caramelized onions or the Vanilla Bean French Toast on the menu. Note: There is no room rental for a weekend brunch event, but there is a $2,600 minimum to be met before taxes and fees.
Suppose you want your baby shower in NYC to have that certain je ne sais quoi (in this case, effortlessly chic rustic French charm), head to Maman. The cafe/bakery has numerous NYC locations that host events. Its newest, Maman King (pictured above), is the largest Maman location yet! Book The Crosby Street Hotel’s Sculpture Courtyard for a genuinely luxurious yet intimate experience with European flair. The Soho Hotel’s serene space features a tall organic tree sculpture, suspended pendant lights, and the greenery of a mix of small trees and shrubs, including magnolia, hydrangea and other native plantings. Private events, held from noon to 4 p.m., are capped at 25 guests, and there is a food and beverage minimum of $95/person. Rates are $6,000 for weekdays and $7,500 on weekends. Another stunning option at The Crosby Street Hotel is The Meadow Suite, which, as the name implies, has its very own garden terrace for a special celebration.
This Astoria restaurant is known for its delicious fare and unique cocktails. The restaurant’s layout includes multiple rooms and intimate spaces that can accommodate small and large groups. The three most popular areas for baby showers are The Snug Room, The Oak Room, and the outdoor Bar Garden. The restaurant also has a charming garden open year-round thanks to heat lamps (where some of its food is grown) that can be booked. The icing on the cake is the hallway that leads to the garden, which features an immersive, floor-to-ceiling installation of fragrant, preserved plants, moss, and lush greenery on every surface. Rates start at $95/person.
Home to some of our favorite pancakes (and a happening brunch scene), Sunday in Brooklyn also has several event spaces ranging from casual to refined funky, and you can host a party for as few as nine people and as many as 200. Choose from an intimate private dining room for 16 on the third floor, a second-floor sunroom (for 50 people, pictured), a second-floor rooftop covered garden (more casual) and more. Brunch is served family style, with creative takes on hearty classics, starting at $45 per person (unlimited drip coffee included); beverage packages are offered separately. And yes, you can add on the famous malted pancakes.
This sweet Lower East Side flower shop will host your baby shower in NYC on-site or come to you. You can host a gathering of up to 24 people in the shop, with the option of catering from the equally chic cafe, Maman (see above). Add on an activity such as making floral crowns, terrariums, seasonal bouquets and more, as well as botanically-inspired favors and memorable decor. Showers include a staff member to assist with setup and lead the class.
Showers are two hours, and if on-site, are $900 (outside of business hours) and $2,000 during business hours. Off-site showers are $1,250 with a 20 percent delivery fee.
Moms-to-be with a sweet tooth will love learning to bake cakes and truffles at Momofuku Milk Bar. Guests learn all the steps for assembling Milk Bar’s most popular layer cake flavor combinations and will learn how to transform cake scraps into delectable bite-sized cake truffles. (This will be great practice for all the upcoming kids’ birthday parties!) Small group classes for 2-20 people last approximately 3 hours and start at $2,500.
At Sprinkles, $900 will get you two hours, four dozen full-sized cupcakes, or six dozen mini cupcakes, and you can choose to have them frosted or unfrosted. If you choose the unfrosted option, you can select up to three cakes and frostings and host a frosting party upstairs! If you’d like to add on any additional time, the rate is $100 per hour. Willowbrook Apple Farm Over the summer, the O’Donnell family who currently runs Goodie Farm, became the proud new owners of Oak Glen’s beloved Willowbrook Apple Farm. This small, family-run operation will continue to offer u-pick apples, u-pick berries, interactive farm experiences, and educational farm tours. The couple also has exciting plans for private and semi-private events complete with B&B farm experiences, on-farm dinners and lunches, foraging workshops, and cooking classes. Goodie Farm will also supply the highest quality produce in the farm shop during events and will be an important part of all culinary affairs. At press time, the O’Donnells are still prepping for the 2023 fall season, so be sure to stay tuned to their website for further dates and details. Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho For a grander-style farm outing, Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho has more than 150 acres of land that grow berries, apples, pumpkins, and chestnuts throughout the year. But apple picking season tends to be the real star of the show every fall with good reason. There’s so much for littles to do, including exploring the corn maze, petting farm animals, dipping candles, doing frontier chores, and hopping on wagon and tractor rides to get a better view of the ranch.

There’s ample seating outdoors so you can dine al fresco while enjoying live music, and there are plenty of activities for the whole family to burn off all they’ve consumed. Take a ride on America’s largest all-weather tubing slide, brush up your hatchet skills at Axe Therapy, pan for gold at the Oak Tree Mining Company, make new friends at the petting zoo, play a rousing game of corn hole, and so much more.
Insider Tip:Later in the season, plan a visit when there’s snow so littles can build a snowman and go sledding. Even though you can’t pick apples at this location, a pit stop at Pops & Drops Candy Co. is worth it for some hand-dipped caramel apples.
Parrish Pioneer Ranch Since its inception in 1866, this orchard has developed its 160-acre farmland into an Oak Glen destination filled with a large variety of apples and historic landmarks honoring the history of the region. Although there is no apple picking on site, they offer apples pre-bagged with more than 19 varieties which will make your taste buds party. Their restaurant, store, and bakery are worth the trip alone to taste your way through all that the ranch has to offer. From gourmet chocolates and apple butter to apple cider and wine tasting for adults, you’ll be super happy you stopped by. There’s also a great antique shop and toy store on site as well.
Insider Tip: Some of the apples grown are unique to this area including the Parkdale Beauty and the Vazquez – named after the Parrish foreman, Juan Vazquez, who developed this varietal on the ranch. And if you arrive earlier in the season, you can taste the Arkansas Black apples which frequently sell out because of their crisp and fruity flavors.

Stop by to visit the farm’s original packing shed and cider mill. Parents can pop into the orchard’s tasting room to try a sample (or a decent sized pour) of Snow-Line’s wines and hard ciders using the best California-locally sourced ingredients.

What to Know: Since there are acres and acres of open space, take your picnic blanket, sunscreen, sun hats, lots of water, and snacks to keep everyone from feeling dehydrated and hungry. Although you can purchase snacks at the orchards, lines can get long so it helps to have other options on hand. Bring cash – it’s especially useful when visiting the smaller farms. The weather and fruit availability can vary so check beforehand when planning your trip to visit to avoid disappointment.
What to Wear: It can be hot while picking apples but gets dramatically cooler in the afternoon so dress comfortably and bring a jacket for later. Most orchards also recommend close-toed shoes for guests.

Here’s the thing: I love travel. Love, love, love. I can travel non-stop on back-to-back trips and still want more. I have two boys and one is a travel junkie like me and the other is decidedly not.
My oldest, the travel enthusiast, was graduating eighth grade and I wanted to take him somewhere special to celebrate the occasion. We settled on Sri Lanka, a place that my son was not overly familiar with and a place that had been on my bucket list for ages.

Nestled in the heart of South Asia, the island of Sri Lanka is known for its rich cultural heritage, lush landscapes, and warm hospitality. Plus, there are plenty of active adventure activities to be had. Traveling with a teen can be both a ton of fun and a challenging experience. I wanted to plan plenty of active adventure excursions to keep us busy but also wanted to allow for downtime so we wouldn’t get on each other’s nerves. This trip turned out to be the perfect combination of both.
And the Journey Begins
I decided to stay at the Uga properties—they cater to families (with plenty of activities for teens), but they also provide a really unique, luxury experience. So in the evenings, or on days we had downtime, the resort was a perfect place to relax and recharge.

Our first stop was Uga Chena Huts which is nestled within the heart of Yala National Park. This eco-luxury resort provided us with an amazing, upscale, unique glamping experience. The resort consists of fewer than 20 luxurious villas each with its own private plunge pool, creating plenty of privacy amidst the wilderness. My son and I went swimming in our plunge pool both day and night, both together and separately. That plunge pool got so much use, it was one of the highlights of our trip. It felt so decadent to have our own pool and since it was steps away from our room, it was quick and easy to change in (and out) of our swimming suits. The views of the ocean from the pool were amazing.
We did daily game drives in Yala National Park and saw tons of elephants and other wildlife. The game drives went out twice daily—early in the morning and late in the afternoon, prime times to see the animals. The property also offered star gazing so we were able to unwind under the night sky with a guided stargazing session, where teens (and adults) joined us to learn about the constellations. It was magical.

Next, we headed to Ulagalla Resort located near Anuradhapura. Set amidst 58 acres of lush greenery, Ulagalla is equally stunning and also came with a private plunge pool. (Jack and I were quickly getting spoiled). This property is massive in size (one of our favorite activities was to bike around the grounds and through the rice paddies), but it’s intimate enough that there are less than 30 villas, so it never felt crowded. Even though there were other travelers present, we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
This property really caters to families as they have so many excursions. In addition to cycling around the property, they have a bike tour that goes through the local village and stops at historical sites and temples. This was such an amazing tour—the locals were so friendly, with all the kids coming out and waving and yelling “hello!” as we cycled past. When we stopped at the temple, local kids and adults gathered around us to ask where we were from and how we liked Sri Lanka. I’ve traveled all over the world and have met many warm, kind, and hospitable people, but Sri Lanka is definitely at the top of the list for friendliest. Everywhere we went people (kids and adults) smiled and waved hello. It felt so special and warm.

In addition to the bike tour, we went kayaking at dawn through the lily pads which felt so tranquil and magical. We also did a sunset jeep tour where we had drinks overlooking the escarpment (our guide told us that sometimes elephants make an appearance). We also did a cooking class (which we both loved even though at home we are not very good cooks) and went horseback riding in the lake (the horses were super playful).
One evening we had a fantastic dinner experience called Kamatha. It was a feast—we were served up traditional specialties—dozens of small dishes that incorporated vegetables harvested at Ulagalla’s organic farm; locally-caught lake fish; and free-range meats sourced locally. This was a very special treat and it was all the more magical because our dinner took place in the middle of a rice paddy. The three days spent at Ulagalla felt like a month—we did so much, but also had ample time to relax and just take in the scenery (from our private plunge pool, of course).

The next stop was Uga Bay, a beachside resort situated along the golden shores of Pasikudah. The resort offers snorkeling, SUP, and sunbathing (which isn’t bad given there are amazing views of the Indian Ocean). We also went scuba diving here. In the evening, we had a lovely beach dinner—the table and chairs were literally created from the sand. It was truly special and unique.
Before heading back to the U.S., we spent a final night in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital at Uga Residence, a boutique property that houses one of the city’s top restaurants Rare Bar + Kitchen.
My son and I spent 12 days together and it was a perfect mix of active adventure and relaxation.
