Fresh mountain air, history, the arts, outdoor adventure, and amazing food—you can expect this (and more) when you visit Breckenridge, CO with your kids. From paved biking trails to exhilarating mountainside fun, a children’s museum, and even an authentic gold mine, there’s no end to the fun at any time of year. We scoped out this lively mountain town and found the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids.
1. Enjoy historic Main Street and downtown Breckenridge.
This charming historic districts has plenty of modern-day perks and interests to keep the kids interested. Wander into Peek-a-Boo Toys, a speciality shop filled with toys and games, and stock up on sweets at Fuzzywigs Candy Factory. Rub the replica gold nugget for good luck at Prospector Park, check out the free history exhibit at the Welcome Center, blow off steam at the Blue River Lawn, and find the toddler sandbox and play area at the Blue River Plaza. Don’t leave without getting a cookie sandwich from Mountain Top Cookie Shop!
2. Experience Country Boy Mine.

This now-shuttered gold mine is a short distance from the heart of Breckenridge, and it’s something you won’t forget. You’ll walk almost 1,000 feet into the heart of the mine and learn what it was like for miners in the 19th century. There is also a chance to pan for gold, pet the donkeys, go on a treasure hunt, and try the extreme sledding course in the winter. There’s also a fun gift store at Country Boy Mine filled with gems, fun toys, and historic books about the history of mining in Colorado.
3. Go hiking.
All those mountains you ski in the winter? There are trails all over them, and in the summer, it’s one of the best ways to soak in the mountain air, wildflowers, waterfalls, and lakes. Some of the best hikes for families include the Sallie Barber Mine Trail, Blue River Trail, and the Fairy Forest Sawmill Reservoir Trail.
There is no end to the options for dining in Breckenridge. One of our favorite spots is Tin Plate Pizza. Located in an old mining cabin in the historic district, this spot is steeped in history. Home to the town’s gold assayer, Tin Plate is where Colorado’s largest gold nugget, colloquially named “Tom’s Baby,” was cleaned and weighed at 13.5 pounds in 1887. Go for the meatballs to start and then choose from a dozen pizza options like our favorite, the elote pizza that’s topped with corn, roasted poblano peppers and goat cheese.
Downstairs at Eric’s has a great menu, 27 arcade games, and a laid-back vibe. Breckenridge Brewery has fantastic apps for kids (think giant pretzels), a relaxed space, and great beers for the parents. Crepes a la Cart is well worth the wait in line, The Blue Moose is your best bet for breakfasts, and the Kenosha Steak House has one of the best decks in town, cornhole, and room to run.
5. Stay at the Grand Colorado on Peak 8 for the ultimate vacation experience.

Whether you’re there to ski or snowboard, or if you prefer the mountain town in the summer months, the Grand Colorado has everything you need, plus more. The resort has multi-bedroom suites with full kitchens, so you can opt to eat in (be sure to grab groceries at the store outside of town, as there aren’t many grocery options in town) your apartment. The Grand Colorado on Peak 8 has an escape room, lawn games like giant chess, shuffleboard, Nintendo and Wii rentals, two indoor/outdoor pools, splash pads for little kids, an arcade room with everything from air hockey to pinball, a free little library, and five private movie theaters you can reserve at the front desk upon arrival. You’ll see kids having fun everywhere: the lobby, the water zone, and outside. When staying at the Grand Colorado, you’ll have direct access to Peak 8 and the BreckConnect gondola.
If you want to dine at The Grand Colorado at Peak 8, Robbie’s Tavern is perfect for burgers, sandwiches, a fantastic Philly cheesesteak, and other upscale pub fare. It’s also a great spot to watch snow enthusiasts in the winter and the outdoor fun of Epic Discovery in the summer months. Ullr Café is where you’ll find coffee, baked goods (try the sausage roll), and a fun happy hour at the end of the day.
6. Spend the day at Epic Discovery.
Epic Discovery is the place for summer guests to enjoy ropes courses, panning for gems, a bungee trampoline, a bounce house, an alpine slide, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more. If you aren’t staying near Peak 8, you can ride the gondola from town up to the mountainside for a day of fun. Epic Discovery is open from late June to Labor Day daily from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm, and the BreckConnect gondola is open daily from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.
7. Enjoy the art scene.

From a downtown full of sculptures to live theater performances, Breckenridge is full of ways to explore the arts. We loved discovering these points of interest along Main Street as well astracking down the famed Breckenridge Troll in a nearby park. Named Isak Heartstone, this 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture is located on the Trollstigen Trail next to Illinois Gulch Trailhead. You can walk here from Main Street to check out this massive sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who is known worldwide for bringing awareness to recycling and upcycling by building great things out of trash.
Another one of the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids is to catch a show at the Riverwalk Center, where live music and other events happen weekly (most are all-ages appropriate!). In August, you can enjoy the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, when dozens of art events are held in parks, on trails, and in cultural venues.
If you’re looking for a indoor things to do in Breckenridge with kids, then Mountain Top Explorium is the place! Kids will love the Mountain Top Medical Center exhibit, where they can check X-rays, rescue skiers stranded on a slope, review vitals, and be first responders! Another fun pretend play area is the Wonder Lab, where kids can write their names on a glow-in-the-dark board, their shadows, and create a design on a giant Lite Brite.
Other exhibits include the Rocky Mountain Wildlife exhibit, the Tot Spot, and the Kidstruction Zone. They offer a summer day camp and guided astronomy sessions are coming soon.
9. Ride bikes along the Blue River Bikeway.

The Blue River Bikeway runs through the heart of town. The paved path is perfect for families who want to enjoy the mountain views. If you have toddlers or young kids, be aware that part of the path is on an incline, so you might benefit from renting a bike with a seat attachment. Don’t forget to pack lots of snacks and water and stopping at the playground at mile 3 is a must.
All throughout town, you can find ski shops that double as bike rental shops during the warm months like Elevation Cycles. Book a guided tour of the mountain bike trails with Colorado Adventure Guides to increase your skills or try something you’ve never done before. It’s a great way to view the area from a different vantage point and explore as a family.
Keep in mind that Breckenridge’s elevation can hit you hard when you arrive. Be sure to hydrate for a few days before you arrive, as well as while you are in Breckenridge. And, reapply sunscreen when you are out and about.

Spend a few days exploring Denver and then head to Estes Park to visit Rocky Mountain National Park
There’s so much to do and see in Colorado with kids and we think you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t combine a few days in Denver with some time in the mountains when you visit. That’s why this itinerary is perfect for families, especially if you are traveling with tweens and teens. Start your trip in Denver and spend a few nights at a rad hotel with bunk bed rooms, an Airstream in the lobby, and a food hall in the same building. Your city itinerary includes a street art tour, lots of top-notch restaurants, and a visit to the over-the-top art installation Meow Wolf.
Then head to the mountains where the YMCA of the Rockies is your home base. It’s only a 90-minute drive from Denver and offers loads of on-site activities for families from snowshoeing to crafts to roller skating. Best of all, it’s 15 minutes from the adorable town of Estes Park and the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. We did this trip in five days and have the full scoop below!
What are the top things to do with teens in Denver?
1. Do yourself a favor and book a walking tour with Denver Grafitti Tour. Our family felt this was one of the top activities we did in Colorado as there was so much amazing art to see. This tour leads you through the RiNo neighborhood and you’ll get a good helping of Denver history as you walk along and see the many murals. The tour ends at Denver Central Market where you definitely need to grab a bite to eat (more on that below).
2. The Stanley Marketplace in Aurora was another top spot to visit for some good eats, shopping, and even a fun VR experience at VR Social. Definitely put Churreria de Madrid on your must-eat list as they offer some of the best churros with drinking chocolate we’ve ever had (along with other traditional tapas like patatas bravas). If the weather is nice, little ones will love LuBird’s Light, an all-abilities playground with lots of fun play equipment and seating areas for adults.

3. Plan to spend at least a few hours at Meow Wolf: Convergence Station. We weren’t sure what to expect from Meow Wolf but it definitely kept our teen crew interested. This 4-story immersive art exhibit will have you wondering what’s real and what’s not from the moment you step off the elevators. Wander through a room of mirrors and emerge into a dark land that could be part of a Dr. Seuss story. You can walk through walls, interact with the characters in the different exhibits, and be open to discovering the mysteries that lie within. Meow Wolf is kid-friendly but might be a little overwhelming for little ones. There’s a cafe on the first floor (with a water station) if you need a little sensory break.
4. Visit some of the many kid-friendly museums that Denver has to offer like the Children’s Museum of Denver which has an awesome outdoor climbing structure that will be a kid favorite for sure.
Where should you stay in Denver?
The Maven
We loved everything about our stay at The Maven in Denver (and are already planning our return visit). Located in the super trendy Dairy Block, The Maven is right down the street from Coors Field and Union Station. As soon as you walk in and spot the Airstream in the lobby, you’ll know that this is a spot where you’ll want to hang out. The Maven has urban-styled rooms with the bunkroom being a family favorite (hello, personal swing!). Nightly happy hour served from the Airstream and a free shuttle service that will take you and pick you up anywhere within a two-mile radius are a few of the perks. Just off the lobby, you’ll find tons of dining options (more info below).
Where should you eat with kids in Denver?

1. Right off the lobby of The Maven you’ll find the Denver Milk Market, a grouping of restaurants, bars, and a co-working space. You can walk down from your room and grab a crêpe for the kids and a coffee for yourself without much effort at all. We loved the convenience of the food hall for grabbing food that everyone likes and the casual dining space that works well with kids.
2. Just a short walk from The Maven is Union Station, where you’ll find quite a few dining options. We loved the pretzel bun breakfast sandwiches and iced chai from Snooze Union Stationand recommend you add it to your list.
3. In addition to many grab-and-go options, Stanley Marketplace is home to Annettewhere you can sit down and be treated to a delicious scratch-to-table meal with shareable plates like mussels + frites and sunchoke gratin. Don’t skip the popcorn; it’s addictive.
4. Root Down was a family favorite with small plates like Colombian arepas topped with poblano pistachio pesto, as well as pan-roasted chicken and bison NY strip if you are feeling a little more hungry. Parents will enjoy the inventive cocktails using ingredients like beet juice and fig jam. The salted chocolate chip cookies were a top pick.
5. If you find your way to RiNo, Denver Central Market offers indoor and outdoor seating with lots of different dining options including a fish market (get the fish tacos!), an Italian spot with wood-fired pizzas, and a bakery.

Once you are ready to leave the bustling city behind and spend some time in nature, pack up the car and head to Estes Park. Just a 90-minute drive from Denver, we found to drive to be very manageable with only a short stint of windy roads as you got closer to the town. Do yourself a favor and stop at Colorado Cherry Company, located between Lyons and Estes Park. The hand pies were a real treat and they have just about every cherry product you could imagine.
We didn’t get to check it out due to high winds during our visit but we planned on stopping by the Mustang Mountain Coaster on our way to Estes Park. It looks like the perfect activity for thrill seekers and we have it on our list for next time for sure!
YMCA of the Rockies: Your Estes Park Home Base

There’s no better choice than the YMCA of the Rockies for your Estes Park stay. So much more than just a spot to sleep, the YMCA offers so many on-site activities you won’t want to leave the property. During our winter visit, you could sign up for indoor archery sessions, spend the afternoon in the heated indoor pool, test your family cooperation skills in the escape room, and so much more. Our teens particularly enjoyed jamming to 80s music for their first time roller skating (to our extreme delight). You can borrow sleds and head to the sledding hill, rent snowshoes for exploring, and book some time at the indoor climbing wall. And let’s not forget the most over-the-top crafts center you’ve ever seen! Summer offers even more activities like guided hikes, rafting excursions, mini golf, fishing, and astronomy.
We stayed in a very spacious three-bedroom, two-bathroom cabin that had a full kitchen. This is a super family-friendly setup as you can bring food and cook your own meals. YMCA of the Rockies also offers a cafeteria-style dining plan that makes it that much easier for families traveling from far away.
Things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park with Kids

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is a not-to-be-missed destination when you are visiting Estes Park. Just a short drive from the YMCA, RMNP is full of hiking trails, waterfalls, mountain overlooks, and wildlife. Stop in the visitor’s center before you enter the park to get tips on where to go. We rented snowshoes from the YMCA and brought them with us into the park. The ranger recommended that we head to the Bear Lake Loop trail for snowshoeing and then Sprague Lake Loop for an easy one-mile hike. Along the way, we saw deer and quite a few elk! The water was flowing at the Alluvian Fan and the vistas were more than impressive (even to the sometimes-surly teens). Be sure to bring plenty of water and food with you, and wear layers for the varying weather conditions.
Things to Do in Estes Park with Kids

If the kids are looking for a fun indoor activity, head to the Estes Park Mountain Shop just past downtown for some indoor rock climbing. They have a 3-for-$20 deal where you can have a friendly staff member belay while you climb the wall. This is also a great place to remember in case you need to pick up any forgotten winter gear items like beanies and gloves.
Stephen King fans will want to book a tour of The Stanley Hotel or at least stop by for a drink in the saloon. This historic hotel was the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.

You’re going to love walking through the quaint mountain town of Estes Park and checking out the (MANY) taffy shops, rock shops, and souvenir shops.
Where to Eat in Estes Park:
Sandwich Mafia was a little hole-in-the-wall we were happy to discover while walking around downtown. Hot and cold sandwiches of every type were on the menu and we especially enjoyed the chicken with pesto panini.
Hearty, seasonal eats fill the menu at Bird & Jimand there’s plenty the kids will enjoy. The charcuterie plate is a great way to start the meal and entrees like the buffalo burger and the lamb bolognese were a hit with our crew.
Grab some to-go food from The Bird’s Nestbefore you head into RMNP. Hearty breakfast burritos, sweet rolls, and strong coffee fill the breakfast menu and they are known for their pizza and paninis for lunch and dinner.
For a good margarita and a huge menu, head to Ed’s Cantina where they serve up tacos and other Mexican favorites that everyone loves.
Don’t knock a donut spot in a gas station until you’ve tried it. We might have stopped at Donut Haus twice during our three days in Estes Park. It’s that good (and the staff is so nice!).
Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ and Brew is the perfect dinner option after a long day of hiking in RMNP. It’s no frills and the food is plentiful and delicious.

An indoor playground is a perfect option when the weather doesn’t want to cooperate
Whether it’s snowing, raining, or even sunny outside, sometimes it’s just easier to play inside. Skip the layers, skip the snowsuits, skip the umbrellas, and even skip the sunscreen. It really is okay to enjoy a beautiful Chicago day indoors particularly if you need to get stuff done.
So where are you going to play today? When your living room loses its luster (your kiddos can only bounce off the walls for so long), check out a neighborhood play space. With indoor jungle gyms, pretend play areas, and tons of toys, the options in Chicago and the ‘burbs have something for every kind of kid. Plus, many have cafes, wifi, and even co-working space for parents.
Why venture to Indiana for a play space? Because this one, which feels like a hybrid of a children’s museum and play space, is truly out of this world. Every aspect of Bellaboo is open-ended, play-based, and unstructured, which means your kids really engage their imaginations. With a circular layout, each themed area is actually an entire room. Have a blast in the blocks room, water room, arts and crafts room, train room, and more. A full menu in the cafe means you can make a day of it. Weather permitting, they offer an outdoor area as well.
Bubbles Academy now offers several ways to enjoy its services. Bubbles North Branch is located across the street from Bubbles Academy and is dedicated to all caregiver and child drop-off classes and garage and tent classes. Bubbles Academy is home to the arts-integrated preschool for ages 2.5-5. This location includes an outdoor nature playground using materials that inspire play and connection with the natural world.
Their location at 900 N. Michigan shops hosts music, movement and art classes, preschool prep, weekly drop-in art experiences, and curated retail from local mom-owned businesses.

In addition to the Dinosaur Exhibition, the Tinkering Lab, Treehouse Trails, Art Studio, and so many other great exhibits, play, and climbing areas, the Chicago Children’s Museum just unveiled its newest attraction, Moen Presents Water City. The main components of Water City include the City Center, where kids can experiment with water within a city model of Chicago, Musical Water, with water-activated musical buildings, the Early Learning Area which includes lower tables, and a working replica of Buckingham Fountain, Foggy Lake in which waves can be created, River and Dam for creating courses for a vessel to travel and control the water flow, a Water City Signage area, and Bridges, Ledges, and Loose Parts for Narrative Play.
This hidden gem delights kids with hands-on exhibits about light, water, wind, and more. Come wearing your thinking cap—or just romp around. Attractions include a giant “Lite Brite” peg board, musical instruments, and climbing tubes and tunnels that stretch two-and-a-half stories.
The Lincoln Park Zoo recently replaced the kids’ climbing area, located in the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo, with the Houston Family Play Treehouse. The new, year-round, nature-based play space is wheelchair accessible, and special attention was given to making the play space inclusive for kids of all sizes, sight, and movement abilities. It is a much-welcomed update. Best of all, it remains free!
Little Beans Cafe was one of the first and remains one of the most popular play spaces. They offer both imaginative and active play, preschool, summer camps, special holiday events, gymnastics, and other classes and they’re a great place to host a birthday party. They cater to both kids 0-6 years old, and they have a ninja gym area for “Big Beans” (4-12 years old.) The cafe serves food and drinks and they worked on their patio in 2021 to make it extra inviting for parents to relax.
Present Place Chicago offers several drop-in classes (reservations strongly recommended), including Skip & Scoot Little Fitness Adventures, Music Class with Ms. Sunshine, and the little book club. Open, caregiver-supervised play for ages 0-4 is offered during the week. With an incredible play set and selection of imaginative toys, adults can plan to socialize or even get some remote work done while the children are occupied in a safe space. Coffee and wifi are free!
Muraled walls fill this hub for parents with character and cheer. Best suited to kids ages 0-4, it’s intimately sized to allow kids free range to gain independence while you keep tabs. The focus is imaginative play with a hut-style house and a nice stock of dress-up clothes. Gross motor skills can be developed on the balance beam or small toddler slide. They have special Bubbles & Balloons playtimes too. Reservations required.

itsy bitsy is coming soon to Lincoln Square and is currently available for tours. In addition to an incredibly creative play space for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, itsy bitsy will house a cafe and a comfortable, functional, co-working space. Little Oceanauts
The large play structure at Little Oceanaut with multiple slides, a trampoline, tunnels, and a ball pit is everything every kid has ever wanted. A separate infant/toddler play area lets littles enjoy their own ball pit and soft foam area while a performing stage encourages children to channel their inner thespian. A snack bar means kids can stay and play with their new friends even longer.
Instead of throwing a bunch of toys in different rooms (or even corners of the room), Twirl takes a much cleaner and more inventive approach to playtime for kids under 10 in the play gallery. There’s a super fun main play structure in the center of the room with creative learning spaces surrounding it on each wall and little wall nooks offer a variety of play spaces in the open floor plan. The paint studio offers kids of all ages different art activities at each table, as well as a reusable materials and art supply center for kids to try their hand at anything they come up with.
We love this Berkeley spot for the wee ones as it offers hands-on activities for every interest under the sun. Bumblebee Playspace
This spacious indoor play space is designed especially for the younger set—infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and will delight the littles with its art and light rooms, musical instruments, water and dramatic play areas, and more.
Part science center, part wildlife center, and totally fun, CuriOdyssey is a great spot for both indoor and outdoor time. Indoor exhibits present different ways to relate to the world around us with outdoor animal exhibits. Check out their First Friday Family Nights for music, food, and frivolity with other families.
With an under-the-sea theme, older kids will love exploring the huge play structure and climbing wall, while little ones can stay in a separate under-threes area where parents can keep a close watch. Birthday parties are big business here (the playhouse is closed to the public on weekends, when the parties take over) with simple, all-inclusive packages make planning a snap.
The sky's the limit at Rockin' Jump! The main attraction is a warehouse-sized trampoline room, but kids go bonkers over the slam dunk corner, somersault foam pit, and trampoline dodgeball. Both Bay Area locations offer Rockin' Tots jump times for children up to age 6, so your toddlers aren't bumping up against the big kids. Parents will enjoy the plentiful seating and WiFi while the kids bounce away the rainy day blues.
With two locations to choose from, Safari Run is a great spot for little monkeys who want to run around in a safe, contained, and clean environment. Older kids love the animal-themed climbing area and running track, while toddlers get their own separate play area. It does get crowded especially on school holidays so your best bet is to get there when it opens. Weekends are often reserved for birthday parties so check the online schedule before heading over.

Silver Creek Sportsplex
For hours of non-stop bouncing fun, head to this spot for its enormous inflatables, obstacle courses, roller rink, and climbing walls! Open play runs pretty much all day (call first to check the hours) so pick your two hours and get bouncing. Take the sweaty kids over to High Five Pizza (also located within the sportsplex) to grab some pizza and burgers while watching hockey practice through the windows. Don't forget to wear socks.
Trampolines, arcade, ninja agility course, laser tag...Funtropolis has it all, and more. Little guys and gals can hang in the toddler area while bigger kids take over in the rest of the zones. Climb in the giant play structure before you nosh on some eats from the on-site cafe.
Whirlygig has four unique playrooms, each with a theme like farm or beach, and they offer open play sessions throughout the week. Kids can come and engage in an activity, take a break for a snack, and get to know some new friends.
One of the big draws for families in the Marin Headlands is the Bay Area Discovery Museum. This spot offers the under-eight crew plenty of hands-on opportunities to explore. Throughout the museum’s 7.5 acres, kids will find seven exhibition spaces and daily drop-in programs.
With access to an incredible array of bricks, Play-Well is a LEGO builder's paradise. Boxes Lego collections are stacked from floor to ceiling in every imaginable color and shape. In addition to drop-in play, Play-Well offers classes and camps for ages 5-12.

If 2022 isn’t a year for some major revenge travel action, we don’t know what is. New hotels and all-inclusive resorts are popping up both stateside and internationally in 2022 and we cannot wait! Shangri-La Hotel, Melbourne Sapphire by the Gardens will be a new luxury development, including the long-awaited Shangri-La Hotel, Melbourne. When completed, the five-star Shangri-La Hotel will include 500 guestrooms with three levels of amenities, including a sky lobby, restaurants, spa, fitness center, pool and ballroom. The second tower will include 300 luxury residential apartments as well as office space. A sky bridge will connect the two towers and retail space will occupy the lower levels of the development.

With Los Angeles County public schools offering online-only instruction fall (and parents of pre-schoolers nervous about sending little ones back to classrooms), more and more Los Angeles parents are considering starting up their own at-home pandemic pod (aka micro-schools, aka quaranteams). Curious about this latest trend in learning? Read on to find out what a pod is, how much it costs and everything you need to know before you start one.
Not to complicate things further, but not all pods (groups of 3-6 students of similar ages) function in the same way. Here's a rundown of the basic pod types to consider.
Pod + Distance Learning: For parents who either can't oversee their child's virtual learning experience or want to supplement it with in-person instruction plus provide socialization for your kids, Scoot at Home can help you create an at-home learning pod. Pre-School Pod: Because preschools don't have state-mandated curriculum to follow, setting up a pod for little ones is a bit more straightforward. A company like Podskool can help pair your pod with an educator, who will provide play-based STEAM curriculum for children up to six years old.
Full-Time Pod: Parents looking to forego virtual instruction altogether for kids K-12 need a full-time pod teacher. (This kind of pod falls under homsechooling, and requires following guidelines set by the California Department of Education.) Locally based tutoring company Kids on the Yard now offers a service to help match families with a full-time pod teacher. (Similar to Scoot at Home, Kids on the Yard also offers "distant learning support" for children's regular school, with a learning pod option.) There are also Facebook groups popping up, like Tutors and Instructors of the San Fernando Valley, to help parents find a pod teacher on their own.
Co-op Pods: Instead of hiring an educator, some pod parents are sharing the teaching responsibilities. This might mean alternating supervising a small group of kids during their regular distancing learning instruction, and offering support as needed. Or, particularly if you have younger kids for whom distance learning is a nonstarter, it might mean taking turns leading the pod of little ones.
Pods Can Be Pricey

While parent-run pods are obviously free (not counting the cost of your time, of course), other types of pods vary in price, depending on the number of students, amount of hours and level of instruction. For example, an educator through Scoot at Home costs $349 a day (equivalent to five hours of instruction) for up to six students, kindergarten through 6th grade. That's about $60 per child—assuming your pod has six students. But if your pod has only three students, that amount goes up to $116 a day.
Other learning pod educators or tutors charge per hour and based on the number of students. An instructor with Diamond Learning Center in Granada Hills runs $40 an hour for two students, compared to $60 an hour for five kids.
Whether you're paying by the hour or by the day, the price for five hours of instruction, five days a week could cost more than $500 a week per student.
Wondering where to set up a pod? "For safety reasons, we suggest being outside is best, followed by an indoor space with plenty of ventilation," says James Sanders, CEO of Scoot Education and Scoot at Home. "The more room to allow for social distancing, the better," he adds. Sanders also recommends using flexible seating, rather than traditional tables or desks and chairs.
In terms of social distancing among kids, you'll want to make sure you and your fellow pod parents are on the same page about how much interaction kids will have. Some pods might be all in (no masks, no distancing, like one big happy bubble), while others may forego masks but still practice distancing. Similarly, you'll want to have clearly established, mutually agreed upon safety guidelines with any educator.
Pods Can Increase Inequities in Education

We can't talk about pods without addressing the inequities in education. Already, research has shown that distance learning increases the digital divide and disproportionately harms students of color. Experts say learning pods will only further that divide. According to a report on Vox, some school districts are looking at ways to create pod-like instruction for all students. In San Francisco, for example, the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, with the support of the city, is setting up 40 learning hubs, located in libraries and recreation centers, for lower income students.
And just recently, Los Angeles Unified School District, the largest district in LA county, announced that it was launching a pilot program to provide one-on-one tutoring, both in person and online for students who need it most. "Carefully screened Step Up Tutoring volunteers from across the country will provide K-8 students with supplemental, individualized assistance outside of the regular school day," according to a release from LAUSD.
Something to bear in mind if you permit into a school that's not your school of residence: Being in a pod could jeopardize your permit status. (Students who continue with online instruction while participating in a pod are not affected.) We've reached out to LAUSD to confirm the details and are waiting to hear back. We'll update this post once we know more, but in the meantime, if you're concerned about losing your permit, you should contact your child's school directly.
