Mississippi Pizza Pub

This pizza bastion of kid-friendliness on Mississippi expanded during the pandemic to include outdoor seating both in the back (borrowing from their neighbors) and in front (using the parking plazas). There are regular shows and events held here, including family-friendly music performances, trivia nights, and special events for kids. Plus, the pizzeria has vegan and gluten-free pie options.

Cadillac Cafe

A favorite for breakfast in Portland since 1989, this first-come, first-serve American-style diner offers outside dining on its backyard patio. You might miss out on seeing the still-drivable 1961 pink Cadillac convertible on display inside, but you won’t even miss it with the lush patio and yummy food. And while you can get lunch and dinner, too, we’re really here for the all-day breakfast, especially the French Custard Toast and the Smoked Salmon Benedict.

Level Beer

The founders of this brewery, situated on an impressive 2-acre property, are parents themselves, and their family-friendly outdoor seating area proves it. Grab a burger, tacos, or falafel from the food carts, and then (for the adults) choose from a selection of beer brewed onsite. While there is a tasting room inside, we were truly impressed by the greenhouse beer garden that boasts plenty of outdoor space, games, and even a hop field and a dog run. There’s a rotating menu of food trucks—check the website to see what’s there on which days.

Tamale Boy Dekum

The Northeast branch of this food truck-turned-restaurant boasts a reasonably priced kids’ menu and delicious authentic food from Oaxaca and Northern Mexico. Bonus? They have an awesome outdoor patio. Go for brunch on the weekend and enjoy breakfast burritos and chilaquiles—although the tamales are really where it’s at.

¿Por Qué No? Taqueria

Who doesn’t love tacos? One of our favorite spots for the best tacos in town is this cool restaurant with two locations on Hawthorn and Mississippi that both offer patio dining. The Hawthorn location offers both covered (clutch for impromptu rain) and uncovered seating options. The kids will love the tacos and parents can indulge in incredible ceviche and spectacular margaritas. Keep an eye out on their Instagram page for the various fundraisers they often host!

Stormbreaker Brewing

Two locations, one in St. Johns and one on Mississippi, have patio dining options that include covered and heated seating, complete with cozy fire pits, so even on the colder evenings your crew will stay comfortable. You’ll find a traditional tap room menu of great burgers, sandwiches, fish ’n chips, and chicken tenders. Not to mention, their award-winning beer. If you book ahead, you can also try your hand at axe throwing. Sessions are for ages 9 and up, but the under-9s can spectate.

La Buca

This sweet neighborhood cafe serves up great Italian food with a friendly staff. Along with excellent service, you can expect outdoor heated seating set apart from the street with wide planter boxes. Kids will enjoy their own menu with pasta and veggie choices, and parents will enjoy the affordability—and the wine!

Jam on Hawthorne

Get your breakfast fix at Jam, where the portions are huge and hearty. The kids’ menu features some very reasonable prices and fun options like scrambled eggs, lemon ricotta pancakes, and even vegan and gluten-free options for the kiddos. If you’re choosing from the adult menu, you’ll have staple breakfast fare like eggs and pancakes as well, plus wraps, comfort food, and tons of vegetarian and vegan options—and some stellar cocktail options. Enjoy your meal at the picnic tables covered in cute sun umbrellas, but make sure you step inside as well, as the restaurant is proud to be the largest non-gallery art space in the city. Art from local artists hangs on display, and it’s all available for purchase (100% of the price goes directly to the artist!).

Slappy Cakes

This one might be cheating—the seating is technically indoors but the entire wall opens up, so you’re safe from the elements but still breathing fresh outside air. We just had to include it for the fun build-your-own pancake experience! Slappy Cakes encourages visitors to play with their food, and is a must-visit if you have kids, or if you just want to feel like a kid for a bit. Take a seat, make your order… then have fun making your own pancakes right on your table’s built-in griddle. Plus, every bit of their all-day breakfast fare is made from scratch with fresh, unprocessed ingredients. While you’re here, check out the handcrafted cocktails and kid-friendly drinks. Come by at different times of the year to enjoy each season’s special flavors!

Pioneer Courthouse Square

This urban park is sometimes called the city’s “living room,” providing a gathering space for Portland’s residents, and a beautiful place to hang out for a lunch out. The park is jam-packed with beautiful art and flowering plants (often merging the two in beautiful ways) and provides plenty of space to explore or sit and relax. Food trucks line the park, offering up a mix of Mexican food, veggie rice bowls, sushi burrito, and more. Plus, there are accessible bathrooms and internet access at the square, and lively events are frequently held here. Bring the whole fam and have a cozy day out!

Tin Shed Garden Cafe

Both kid- and pet-friendly, this charming garden cafe is the perfect place to enjoy an al-fresco meal with the whole family—fur-children, included. The cafe boasts an impressive kids’ menu, including fun options that the littles won’t get anywhere else, like tofu and grits, and a Babycino, a cup of steamed milk served with a shot of vanilla, almond, or hazelnut syrup so they can feel just like the grownups. The full menu is a treat, too, with locally sourced ingredients and only sustainably farmed and humanely raised meats on the menu—and the staff are able to accommodate dietary restrictions (nearly every menu item can be made for you gluten-free). Cully Central

This sweet eatery serves up authentic Lao cuisine, which means everything might be spicy to the uninitiated. But if you and the kids are no strangers to a bit of spice, it’s a must-visit on a warm day. Make sure to snag a picnic table outside and don’t miss the gorgeous photo-op of the vibrant wings mural. The Nam Khao rice plate—a crispy pork rice and lettuce wrap—comes highly recommended by visitors!

Some days it feels as if all our kids will eat is pasta. To save you from another night of plain, buttery pasta, we humbly suggest this pasta with cream and ham that also has major grown-up appeal. Marta at Travel For Taste says this recipe is so simple, all you need are two major ingredients–ham and cream! An added bonus: it only takes 20 minutes to prepare, and that even includes cooking the pasta. We’re pretty confident you’ll be making this recipe on more than one occasion, so be sure to print it out and save it in your recipe book.

Ingredients for Pasta with Cream and Ham:

– 5 cups pasta
– 1 3/4 cream
– 1/2 lb ham
– salt to taste
– 1/2 tsp pepper
– 1 flat teaspoon cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water (optional, if you want the cream thicker)
– parmesan cheese, grated (optional)

Method:

1. Put the water for pasta to boil, salt it a bit, and add pasta. Follow the instructions on your package.

2. Pour cream into a deep frying pan and bring to a boil. Add salt and pepper. Keep cooking for 5-7 minutes, while stirring all the time, in order to reduce it a little bit.

3. If you like the sauce even thicker you might mix cornstarch with some cold water and add it to the cream (while stirring constantly).

4. Add ham and mix everything well.

5. Mix with pasta and serve. Optional step: serve with copious amounts of parmesan cheese.

Oh, yes, Firecakes offers more than donuts. The next time you head here for a chocolate old fashioned or a season favorite, double the decadence with Chef Jonathan Fox's frothed-to-order, Parisian-style hot chocolate. It balances Belgian bittersweet chocolate with organic milk, a touch of vanilla and cane sugar, and is topped with a house-made, Tahitian vanilla bean marshmallow. Little Branch Cafe

Before or after a trip to The Field Museum, head to this neighborhood cafe for a warm-up. It serves creative American favorites for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and is great brunch alternative to nearby Yolk, which always has a longer wait. No matter the time of day, you can't go wrong with hot chocolate made from a tasty combo of vanilla syrup, Ghirardelli chocolate powder and milk, topped with whipped cream and cocoa powder.

The San Francisco-based icon is known for its chocolate bars. It also knows a thing or two about the drinkable version. Uncommon Ground

Chances are you're already familiar with this restaurant known for its organic food and neighborhood charm. The hot chocolate is a new reason to try it. Made from omanhene chocolate and topped with whipped cream, you can have it served in a soup bowl for great slurp-ability.

Xoco

While its name is the Mexican slang for "little sister," chef Rick Bayless’ restaurant is a big shot in the hot chocolate scene. The Mexican hot chocolate is made from cacao imported from Tabasco, which is put through a grinding process more meticulous than the judges on Top Chef Masters. One sip and your whole family will be crying olé!

Julius Meinl Cafe

Sipping hot chocolate at the Euro-inspired cafe is a special experience. When you dine in, drinks are served on silver platters with glasses of water on the side. The smooth, rich flavor of the hot chocolate is also worth talking about. It's made from steamed milk and milk chocolate powder shipped from Austria. Ask for it topped with whipped cream and homemade marshmallows.

The drink is back for it’s 19th season

PSL season is here! Starbucks has announced that your fave pumpkin spice goodies are officially back in cafes starting Tues. Aug. 30.

Strap on those boots and grab a scarf on your way out the door to grab your first Pumpkin Spice Latte with its signature pumpkin, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg flavors. Ok fine, yes, it’s still in the 90’s but we can dream.

Jake’s Ice Cream can be found in many locations around town, but get it at the Irwin Street Market for the traditional ice cream parlor effect. Ice cream coolers straddle an old-fashioned ice cream bar with red vinyl stools and glistening countertops. For the wobblers out there, there are also family-style kitchen tables in a lounge adjacent to the ice cream counter. Jake’s impressive list of creative (and offbeat) flavors satisfies every craving in your crowd. They’re also opening a new location in East Point this summer, so keep an eye out.

The Cherry On Top: The ISM houses breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dessert vendors all under one roof, so hit this spot if you can’t bring yourself to make dinner… or lunch… or brunch… one day. It’s right off the Beltline and a worthy destination. Keep in mind that they’re only open on Sat. & Sun. from 2-5 p.m., so plan your day around it.

Frosty Caboose
Trains and treats? Yes, please. This sweet shop is a converted train caboose with a walk-up window serving Greenwood’s ice cream—Atlanta’s answer to Mayfield’s on a smaller scale and with wilder flavors. With a private and plentiful parking lot between the caboose and the actual train track (another plus for your little train aficionados), you can enjoy your ice cream tailgate-style or stroll the streets of downtown Chamblee as you eat.

This is ice cream the way it’s supposed to be. Morelli’s churns up traditional flavors (salted caramel will make you moan) and more creative combinations (think strawberry balsamic, maple bacon, or coconut jalapeño). But no matter your kids’ tastes, the creamy, smooth, rich quality of Morelli’s will have them begging for more.

Kilwin’s
Okay, Kilwin’s is a chain, but there is only one in Georgia (in Atlantic Station), and you should go. The smell of chocolate greets guests at the door, and kids will marvel at the toys, candy cases, and decorations as they make their way back towards the ice cream. Very few things can distract a child from an ice cream cone, but the candy maker molding bite-sized chocolates at the front of the store might do it.

Starbucks holiday drinks and cups are here!

The day is finally here! Halloween is behind us and the holiday season has officially arrived—made official by the fact that Starbucks just announced the return of its iconic holiday drink lineup. Who wants to hit the drive-thru ASAP?!

This year is extra festive, since Starbucks is celebrating 25 years of its iconic holiday cups. To celebrate, the coffee chain is bringing back some of its most beloved designs, which are sure to look familiar to coffee fans all over the world.

And starting today, you can officially grab your favorite festive drinks at any U.S. Starbucks location. This year’s offerings include familiar favorites like the Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brulée Latte, and Chestnut Praline Latte. There’s also a cold brew option for those of us who think iced coffee should be a year-round staple. And always inclusive, Starbucks brought back their first non-dairy holiday latte that debuted last holiday season.

Tis the season to be properly caffeinated. Here’s what’s on offer at Starbucks, starting today.

Peppermint Mocha

One of the most-loved drinks on Starbucks' holiday menu, the Peppermint Mocha is turning 20 years old this year!

Caramel Brulée Latte

Caramel Brulée sauce and topping combine with steamed milk and whipped cream to make this decadent drink.

Chestnut Praline Latte

A beloved holiday favorite, this drink features flavors of caramelized chestnuts and crumbled pralines.

Toasted White Chocolate Mocha

Topped with holiday sugar sprinkles and white pearls, this toasty, chocolatey drink might be the prettiest one on the Starbucks holiday menu.

 

 

Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte

For those who don't drink dairy, Starbucks brought back the Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, the first-ever non-dairy holiday drink that debuted last year.

Irish Cream Cold Brew

For anyone who thinks cold brew is a year-round drink, Starbucks has a holiday menu entry just for you: the festive Irish Cream Cold Brew.

Alongside all the holiday drinks, Starbucks also brought back festive snacks and treats.

Chocolate Pistachio Swirl

New this year is the Chocolate Pistachio Swirl, which features a creamy filling swirled into buttery brioche dough.

You can also still snack on all your classic holiday favorites, like Snowman Cookies, Reindeer Cake Pops, Sugar Plum Cheese Danishes, and Cranberry Bliss Bars.

You have endless ways to customize your Starbucks Frappuccino off the menu. But if you are looking to add a special seasonal twist, we’re sharing a hack that turns your cup into Candy Corn goodness. Read on for the details!

Totally the Bomb has plenty of Starbucks hacks and the latest creation is perfect for that stretch between Halloween and Thanksgiving. To get started, order a Grande Pumpkin Cream Frappuccino with one additional pump of pumpkin sauce. Then, ask for some caramel drizzle at the bottom of the cup. Finally, request plain whipped cream with no pumpkin powder. Simple as that!
