Keep this list of the best photo booths in New York and Brooklyn where you can strike a pose with the kids, the old-fashioned way

There’s just something about an old-fashioned photo booth. Despite it feeling a little archaic in the age of the cell phone, it’s hard to pass on the opportunity to step behind the velvet curtain to snap a few fun-filled photos. Nowadays, believe it or not, there are still some traditional photo booths in New York—and a select few still use film. (What?!) For an alternative to the formal family portrait, cram into one of these little photo booth “studios” and let the magic happen! Want more nostalgic fun around New York? Head to NYC’s family-friendly arcades! Or for some old-school New York fun, try these “vanishing New York” spots!

Where to Find Classic Photo Booths in NYC

1. The Ace Hotel

The Ace Hotel is an NYC gem any time of the day. Grab a meal, a quick coffee (they serve Stumptown afterall), or enjoy its free lobby WIFI to get some work done, all while your kids enjoy the legendary photo booth. Located in the Flatiron District, this spot is also fun to go grab drinks and dinner without the kids as well!

2. DeKalb Market Hall at City Point

There are many reasons to visit the downtown Brooklyn mall of City Point (the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater, Trader Joe’s, McNally Jackson bookstore, etc.). Yet another is DeKalb Market Hall, a food hall featuring vendors selling bites and beverages of all kinds. There is also a photo booth here, found right at the foot of the escalators. It’s $5 for a strip, and you can share to your social accounts right from the booth if you want.

4. UNIQLO Fifth Ave.

Shopping and taking pictures sounds like a match made in heaven, especially when you have the kids with you. (It’s a good way to keep them from getting bored.) We guess that’s what UNIQLO had in mind when it installed a photo booth inside its massive 89,000-square-foot flagship store on Fifth Ave. Take note!: It’s free for a strip of four pictures. (You will no doubt “pay” for the snaps with the purchase of some of the brand’s duds.) Also good to know: there’s a Starbucks inside the store and cell phone charging stations, so you could stay a while…

5. 7B Horseshoe Bar

This spot goes by three names: “The Horseshoe Bar”, “Vazac’s”, and “7B”. On the outside it looks like a classic Lower East Side dive bar, because, well, it is. But it’s got more than that going for it on the inside. With a bar that’s actually shaped like a horseshoe, major LES cred and grittiness, this place has also made cameos in major films like the The Godfather II, Crocodile Dundee, and The Verdict. Its latest star turn? In the incredible, dimension-bending Netflix series, Russian Doll.

6. The Smith

Getting your kids ready to enjoy brunch at The Smith is as easy as “1, 2, cheese!” the restaurant’s Midtown, East Village, Lincoln Square, and NoMad locations all have photo booths for you to enjoy, with some located in the basement by the restrooms, and some, like in NoMad, actually in the restroom.

7. Joe & The Juice

Is your face photo-ready thanks to kale and beet smoothies? If so, stop by Joe & The Juice to grab some healthy grub and snap a few photos in its photo booth (near the back of the shop). This is one of the more spacious juice/café spots in NYC, so feel free to bring the kids and stay a while.

8. M&M World New York Store

The M&M store is the ideal spot for kids to explore the magical world of chocolate and document it all with a photo booth keepsake. The three floors of M&M themed candy and gifts is sure to keep both adults and children occupied, but after you’ve got your chocolate fix be sure to head to the photo booth on the 2nd floor and take home some snaps to remember the outing!

9.  Bubby’s Tribeca

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and pies! Oh my! More than two decades ago Bubby’s started off by baking pies, and now it’s a full-fledged restaurant with a couple of locations around the city. (Note: they serve some of the best pancakes in the city.) But head to the one on Hudson Street for a little bit of top model action to take some pics.

Steve Irwin would have turned 60 today, and his daughter, Bindi Irwin, 23, is paying tribute to him In a special way. She’ll spend the day with her daughter, whose middle names “Warrior Irwin” are a tribute to her father, and she’s posted memorable family photos on her personal Instagram.

“Today I’ll watch ‘The Crocodile Hunter’ with Grace Warrior and share stories about her incredible Grandpa Crocodile,” she wrote. She also posted a photo of her dad holding up a snake with her by his side. The late conservationist loved to explore nature with his family.

Bindi wrote “I love you with all my heart. Your legacy lives on,” to end her memorial post to her dad, captioning the photo she shared “Happy Birthday to the greatest dad and Wildlife Warrior.”

Steve Irwin, a wildlife expert known for his vibrant personality and love of nature, was 44 when he died in 2006 after a stingray stung him in the chest while he was filming a TV show.

His son, 18, also posted about his father, writing “My earliest memories are my fondest, thanks to you. Hanging on tight to the handlebars of the motorbike, when you’d take Bindi and I on your morning lap of the zoo — before going to get ice cream for breakfast. Every minute spent with you was a blessing,” he wrote. “I’m gonna ride that lap on your old motorbike this afternoon. ❤️”

Big sister Bindi commented on her brother’s post “Love you. So proud of you. Dad is always with us. ❤️”

Australia Zoo Animals Flock to Bindi Irwin’s Baby: ‘That’s Steve All Over’

Animals flock to Bindi Irwin’s baby, Grace, proving that wildlife expert Steve Irwin’s 10-month old granddaughter appears to have inherited his animal magnetism.

“So she’ll go out in the morning in the stroller, and all the kangaroos just gather around her like they’re having a meeting,” said her grandmother, Terri Irwin. Her father, Chandler Powell, shared the beautiful image on Twitter:

Bindi’s mom Terri opened up to Entertainment tonight about just how much the new addition to the family resembles her late husband. “I think she’s got that determination that Steve had and that connection with wildlife,” She said. “Because it is weird to see animals just gravitate to her. So she’ll go out in the morning in the stroller, and all the kangaroos just gather around her like they’re having a meeting.”

Steve (aka the Crocodile Hunter) died on Sept. 4, 2006, after his heart was pierced by the barb of a stingray while filming at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Known for his wildlife documentaries, exuberant personality and sense of adventure, it’s no surprise to Bindi, 23, that her baby girl is taking after her grandfather. “Oh my word, the koalas … literally climb out of their trees to come see her.”

Considering how adorable Grace is, we’re not surprised. We’d climb out of a tree to say hello, too.

Bindi Irwin and husband Chandler Powell are parents! The Crikey! It’s the Irwins star (and daughter of famed “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin) welcomed daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell on Mar. 25.

March has a whole new meaning for Irwin and Powell now. Not only is it the couple’s anniversary, but it’s also their first child’s birth month. Irwin posted a sweet family Instagram pic and a caption celebrating both awesome occasions.

Zac Hanson & Wife Kate Welcome 5th Child

Being stuck at home for going on five months definitely has us desperate for new ways to entertain the kids—beyond downloading Disney+ and just handing over the remote. Our Los Angeles Editor Shannan Rouss feels us. A full-time, working mom with a four year old, Shannan shares her top picks for games, toys and gears to get you through the pandemic.

As a mom to an only child, I’m also my son’s only playmate. Which means I’m always looking for toys, games and crafts that he can do on his own, so that maybe—just maybe—I might get a few minutes to respond to a work email or unload the dishwasher. Added bonus if they’re also educational. Read on to find for all my sanity-saving finds.

Play Make Create: A Process Art Book

via Amazon

At a certain point, even the most creative of moms is going to run out of art projects. Enter this book from the titular owner of kids art studio Meri Cherry in Encinco. Her book is my go-to when I'm stuck for a crafty activity. So far, we've borrowed her recipe for colored sand (hint: salt is involved), made clay beads, created a science station, painted over a tape collage and whipped up some ooey-gooey Oobleck.

Browse Meri Cherry's Play Make Create: A Process Art Book.

Polymer Clay Starter Kit

via Amazon

I got this pack of polymer clay to make beads (an idea from Meri Cherry's book), but my son ended up using it to just create his own free-form sculptures (or what he called playgrounds, mountains, forests, etc.). Polymer clay (known by brand names like FIMO and Sculpey) has great tactile appeal, is easy to cut, mold and manipulate, and hardens when it cooks. The kit comes with keychain and jewelry attachments, which we didn't end up using but are great for older kids.

Shop now for this Polymer Clay Starter Kit, $19.79.

Lego Creator Deep Sea Creatures

via Amazon

Legos are my babysitter when I just can't anymore. I think we're averaging around 2-3 new Lego sets a week. That might seem excessive, but we go for the under-$15 boxes and, like I said, they're basically childcare... because my son is Lego-obsessed and he pretty much does them on his own. (Happy dance!) There are lots of 3-in-1 options from Lego Creator, which means more bang for your buck. And deal alert: Lego Creator Deep Sea Creature, $12.79, is actually a 4-in-1 set, with downloadable instructions for a fourth sea creature online.

Shop now for Lego Creator, from $9.84.

Magic Tree House Books 1-4

via Amazon

I was searching for a chapter book I could read with my 4 year old, something that both he and I might enjoy. Friends said he was too young for Harry Potter (confession: I've never read the books myself), and we tried A.A. Milne's House at Pooh Corner, which was sweet but a little slow. Thankfully, someone recommended Mary Pope's Magic Tree House books, and my son was instantly hooked on the time-traveling tales. Each book is about 70 pages long, but the font is large and there are hand-drawn illustrations peppered throughout, so we can finish one off in a single sitting. And just like that a half hour of our day has flown by.

Shop now for Magic Tree House, $11.30 (for Books 1-4).

Liquid Chalk Markers

via Amazon

All those drive-by celebrations? These Liquid Chalk Markers are a must for decorating the car. They come in bright, vibrant colors and wipe off easily. My son has used them on our house windows too—though if the chalk gets on a wooden window frame, it takes some effort to clean up. Another fun and easy way to use them: Get out some black paper for kids to color on. Simple, but oh-so exciting for little ones.

Shop now for the best Liquid Chalk Markers, $9.95.

Spooner Boards Freestyle

via Amazon

For some reason, my son is obsessed with surfing. I think he saw a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode about it. Or maybe it was Lilo & Stitch that sold him on the idea. Regardless, he's only 4, so we're not ready for surfing lessons (plus physical distancing and all). So instead, he "land surfs" on the Spooner Board Freestyle. It took him a few attempts to get the hang of it, but he's mastered a 180 spin and is working on his 360.

Shop now for a Spooner Board Freestyle, $44.

Melissa & Doug See & Spell

via Amazon

I had seen these at my son's preschool, so when it came time to create our own version of at-home preschool, I purchased the set of spelling puzzles. It's a great way for him to practice letters, sounds and sight words. To make things more exciting, we'll sometimes set a timer and see how many he can complete is under a minute. Gotta keep things interesting!

Shop now for Melissa & Doug See & Spell, $17.99.

Hi-Ho Cherry-O

via Amazon

This game is an oldie but a goodie. I'm pretty sure it's the first board game my son has actually mastered, meaning he follows the rules and doesn't make up his own. Plus, it's great for working on counting skills.

Shop now for Hi-Ho Cherry-O, $12.99.

Highlights Alphabet Puzzles

via Amazon

We signed up for the monthly Highlights subscription (Puzzle Buzz for kids ages 4-7) and it's filled with fun mazes, matching games and hidden pictures. It's such a treat for my son to get his own mail and tackle the puzzles, mostly by himself. To help balance out the insane amount of TV he's been watching (no shame... well, a little), I've been supplementing our subscription with even more Highlights activity books, like this Alphabet Puzzles one.

Shop now for Highlights activity workbooks, from $4.79.

Crocodile Creek Day at the Museum Puzzle

via Amazon

This is just one of the many puzzles that has been added to our pandemic puzzle collection. The puzzle is challenging enough that a grownup may need to help at first, but once kiddos have done it a few times, they'll take pride in being able to complete it on their own. Made by Crocodile Creek, the puzzle's pieces are thick and sturdy, not likely to bend or fray like flimsier alternatives. Another favorite puzzle brand in our house is Mudpuppy—they make puzzles for all ages, including 500-1000 piece versions to do as a family.

Shop now for Crocodile Creek Day at the Museum Puzzle, $16.99.

6 Nearby Attractions that Are Open NOW for Families

Editor’s note: We’re making every effort to provide you with the most up-to-date information. However, there may be last minute closures due to Covid-19. We highly recommend that you call ahead or check a park’s website before you pack your kids  (and all those snacks, and diapers…) and haul them across town. Stay safe!

Looking for a day trip that combines fun, nature, and a whole lot of learning? Then point your compass south to Westmoreland State Park in Colonial Beach, Va. Just a 2-hour drive from DC, this gorgeous park features 1200 acres on the Potomac River’s Northern Neck.  It’s a beautiful spot to take the kids for a day (or weekend) of hiking, camping, fishing, boating, swimming and–the best part–hunting for ancient shark teeth.

photo: Virginia State Parks via Flickr

So. Many. Teeth.
Millions of years ago, Westmoreland County, VA was under water and a breeding ground for sharks, including the Megalodon, which is said to be the ancestor of today’s Great White shark. If you scoop up some sand at the water’s edge and sift through the pebbles, beach glass and mollusk shells, you’ll soon catch a glimpse of a pointy triangular-shaped shark tooth that is most likely millions of years old. You’ll find teeth from sharks such as mako, cow, sand and tiger, and if you’re lucky you might even find the tooth of a Megalodon (some are the size of a human hand!). But the coolness doesn’t stop there; you’ll also come across other artifacts, such as whale vertebra, stingray dental plates and crocodile teeth.

photo: Virginia State Parks via Flickr

Know Before You Go
But why so many shark teeth? If your shark-loving lad asks you this question, you can remind him that sharks have an unlimited supply of teeth, which are not firmly set in their jaws but in their gums, where they appear in layered rows. If a tooth falls out, another one simply moves forward to take its place. That means lots of fun fossil finds for the rest of us!

Mark Your Calendar
Combine your trip with the free public event Music on the Cliffs which takes place on July 18  and Sept. 19. Grab a lawn chair and enjoy the sounds of summer while taking in a spectacular view of the Potomac River. Pets are welcome at these events!

Take Art: 5 Reasons to Check Out the REACH

Now Showing: DC’s Kid-Friendly Movie Theaters

The Crocodile Hunter loved all kinds of animals, but if there’s one his name is obviously most synonymous with it’s crocodiles. Steve Irwin’s son Robert just recreated a photo his dad took with the same crocodile and the resemblance is uncanny.

Robert Irwin shared a photo on Instagram standing in an identical pose and outfit and with the same crocodile as his dad 15 years ago. “Dad and me feeding Murray… same place, same croc – two photos 15 years apart.” Robert wrote in the caption that accompanied the side-by-side comparison shots. In each photo father and son are feeding the gaping croc as the crowd watches.

Robert and his sister Bindi have clearly inherited their dad’s love of animals and its not hard to see why as Irwin clearly included the entire family in his passion and animal adventures. Both kids along with their mom, Terri, have continued Irwin’s legacy by running the Australia Zoo and working tirelessly for animal conservation.

Get ready to watch the magical, mystical, downright amazing world of Roald Dahl on Netflix. The iconic children’s author’s stories are coming to life on the small screen, thanks to your fave streaming service!

While you no doubt have seen Dahl’s famed works on the big screen already, such as Matilda, The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this new series is an entirely new take. Netflix has announced it’s gathered some of the most creative minds around to create original animated specials that extend Dahl’s stories in entirely imaginative ways—as if they weren’t imaginative enough on their own. Netflix even offered a sneak peek at what it has in store over the next few years in this neat highlight reel:
