It’s quite possibly the most kid-friendly hotel chain we know of
The Loews Regency New York may be a luxury hotel with a posh Park Avenue address (it’s nestled between scores of ritzy residences and high-end shops), but step inside and it’s as down-to-earth as you can get.
Consider this: When we arrived at the hotel on a recent afternoon, the four of us bleary-eyed after a cross-country flight, the bellman handed my kids “Loews Loves Families” balloons and initiated an impromptu game of balloon-style hackey sack. Right there in the lobby.
And that’s the kind of place this is: Upscale, but friendly. Fancy—but not so much that you feel unwelcome when you walk in with a mom bun and a gaggle of kids all shouting, “Pass it! Pass it!” while they abandon their bags on the marble floors so they can play balloon-ball with the bellman.
So if you were ever intimated at the idea of taking your kids to New York City, here’s where that worry stops. From its family-friendly location (playgrounds galore!!) to the special perks for kids and pets (snacks and treats for both!), here’s everything you need to know about the Loews Regency New York—and how the “Loews Loves Families” program makes it the perfect home base when visiting the Big Apple.
Rooms That Let You Have Your Space (with great views)
All of the Regency’s 379 guestrooms are spacious… at least, for New York City standards, (this is Manhattan, after all). Standard King rooms start at 250 square feet, with suites and apartments going up to 5,520 square feet. All guest rooms have elegant furnishings, city views, and uber-comfy beds with crisp white linens, and overstuffed pillows. There are smart TVs, personalized temperature controls, electronic window shades, plenty of built-in power outlets, bath and body products from the posh Julien Farel spa downstairs, and 24-hour room service.
Of course, nothing impressed my kids as much as the flat-screen TVs built into the bathroom mirrors (these come standard in all rooms). Suffice it to say, my kids spent a lot of time in the bathroom.
The Suite Life: If you want to splurge (no understatement, since larger suites can cost upwards of $1,500 a night during peak season), Loews’ one and two-bedroom suites will have you feeling like New York royalty, with spacious apartment-style accommodations boasting full living rooms, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and upscale furnishings.
There are also six themed “Signature Suites” that feel more like opulent Upper East Side apartments than standard hotel rooms. These include the “Uptown Bohemian Suite,” the “Nate Berkus Apartment,” the “Bespoke Suite,” the “Classic 1970s Apartment,” the “Glamour Suite,” and the “Pop Art Suite.” Insiders say these suites—which feature furniture, art, and decor to reflect the various themes—are often booked by locals who need a luxe home-away-from-home while their Manhattan townhouses are renovated.
Fun Fact: The Loews Regency New York is the first Loews hotel in the country, opening in 1963.
“Loews Loves Families” Perks for Kids
Traveling with kids takes planning, and the Loews Loves Families program—which is available in all 26 Loews hotels and resorts across North America—wants to make that part a bit easier by supplying things that you know you’ll need but don’t want to pack. The hotel also prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere, and this is reflected all over the hotel, including the dining rooms, where kids are always welcome.
Families at the Loews Regency (or any Loews, for that matter) can expect:
Baby & kid supplies: This includes complimentary cribs and baby bath amenity kits as well as night lights, bed rails, playpens, baby bathtubs, humidifiers, stuffed animals, kettles, and noise machines.
Complimentary baby proofing: If you’d like the hotel staff to cover the outlets before your arrival, just let the hotel know before you check in.
Welcome amenities: Upon check-in, kids will get a welcome amenity (balloons and snacks for us, but smaller kids may get stuffed animals, coloring books, and locally-themed goodies). You can also request cookies and juice be delivered to your room upon your arrival.

Food kids will eat—in an environment grown-ups appreciate: If you want to dine in, there are kid-friendly menus at the restaurant (and in-room dining) that include fresh organic baby food for your smallest foodie, as well as kid faves like burgers, pancakes, and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Good to Know: Breakfast at the Regency Bar and Grill is a veritable Who’s Who of Manhattan’s social and business scene (it’s the home of the original “Power Breakfast,” which Forbes magazine described as a place “at which the city’s movers and shakers get in an early morning meeting before limo-ing off to Wall Street, City Hall or some media conglomerate.”). So if you want to dine at the hotel, we recommend breakfast.
Free coffee and tea in the lobby: This one’s all for Mom and Dad. But, you know you’ll need it.
Insider’s Tip: Use the concierge! When we needed to find a kid-friendly restaurant that would be good for the grandparents, the concierge found the perfect place and made the reservations for us. Want to bring your dog with you (we did)? No problem! The “Loews Loves Pets” program will treat your furbaby like the VIP she is, with silver bowls, treats, doggie bags, and pet placemats in your room when you arrive. You’ll also get a doorknob hanger that notifies the cleaning crew not to come in (or to come in carefully, if that’s what you prefer) when your dog is left behind.
The hotel can also provide everything your pet needs, including plush pet beds, litter boxes, scratching posts, pet toys, leashes, collars, and more. Want to take your dog with you on your adventures? Ask the front desk for a dog-walking map plus a list of pet-friendly restaurants nearby. Or, if you need someplace for your pooch to play while you’re away, the hotel has connections to nearby pet-walking and pet-sitting services.

Location, Location, Location!
If you’re not from here, you might think Manhattan would be a scary place for littles—The noise! The crowds! The bumper-to-bumper traffic that makes catching a cab a bonafide skill! But in this largely residential neighborhood filled with designer stores and swanky brownstones, you’ll find nothing of the sort. Instead, there are wide open sidewalks, tree-lined streets, and nobody anywhere trying to sell you a double-decker bus tour (save that for Times Square).
The best part? Central Park is just two blocks away, and it’s the perfect place to let your kids stretch their newfound city legs. So put on your walking shoes and check out these nearby spots:
Central Park’s Billy Johnson Playground (5-minute walk): Stroll into the park to find this magical playground inspired by the natural landscape of Central Park, featuring a miniature rock bridge, numerous water sprinklers, and a 45-foot granite slide built into the existing hillside.
Central Park Zoo (5-minute walk): A 7-acre zoo nestled into the southeast corner of Central Park (just two blocks from the hotel!), featuring animals from tropical, temperate, and polar zones from around the world. Heckscher Playground (10-minute walk): This is Central Park’s oldest and largest playground, and it’s a must-see! The sprawling playground features multiple swings, slides, and an extensive water feature with elevated walkways connected to the ground via ladders and slides. Even cooler, all of it is set against Umpire Rock, one of Central Park’s most dramatic rock outcrops that kids will love scurrying up and around.
Subway to… the rest: Of course, Manhattan is a small island, so anything you want to see is always just a few subway stops away (there’s a subway stop three blocks from the hotel, or you can ask the bellman to call you a taxi). Iconic spots such as the Empire State Building, FAO Schwartz toy store, Rockefeller Center, and the Theater District are all less than 2 miles away, or you can take the E Train from the Upper East Side to Lower Manhattan to check out One World Trade Center Observatory, which offers a spectacular view from the 100th through 102nd floor—and a 47-second, LED projection-assisted “Sky Pod” ride to get there that will be the highlight of your trip.

True, some airports will whisk families through security to help weary moms and dads get through the lines without having to tame tantrums or retrieve runaway kiddos—but it's not a guarantee. To help make sure your wait in the security line is a quick one, apply for TSA PreCheck status, which lets you and your kids breeze through security a little faster (PreChecked travelers use a separate line and don't need to remove their shoes or belts nor remove liquids, laptops or light jackets). Children under 13 can use the TSA PreCheck lane when traveling with a parent or guardian who has the indicator on their boarding pass. Even better? It only costs $85 for five years.

Every parent knows it takes something as simple as, "Sorry, we ran out of the Pirate's Booty" to send a cranky kid into a hangry downward spiral. To avoid this in-air calamity, pre-order any onboard snacks (besides the ones you pack) ahead of time. Most airlines will let you do this within two weeks of your flight, allowing you to prepay for meals or snacks so that you're guaranteed your food of choice even if you're sitting in the last row to be served (most airlines even have kids meals, which reportedly taste way better than their grown-up counterparts).
If you've got a kid who gets queasy easily, sitting at the front of the plane or between the wings is your best bet since this is the most stable part of the airplane. The back seats, by contrast, will be the bumpiest when the air gets choppy. That said, if you've got a kid who's new to the potty, choose a seat in the back, so you're close to the lavatory. Sitting in the rear of the aircraft also means you're within easy reach of in-flight amenities (you can usually get cups of water or seconds on snacks), and you'll have a bit of room to stretch your legs if you need to rock a nearly-snoozing child.

To secure one of the few seats on the plane that offer this perk, book your seats way ahead of time by calling the airline directly and requesting the bassinet seats. The bassinets make a great napping and tummy time space and are available for babies up to about a year (though age and weight limits vary per airline). The last thing you want when you've just reached cruising altitude is to hear the sad wail from your little one that can only mean one thing: something hurts. To help any in-flight ouchies (such as ear pain, which is common during the winter when kids have constant stuffiness), bring a bottle of infant or child Tylenol or Advil (plus the measuring cup that comes with it), just in case.
You don't want to know what might be lurking on the tray table where your one-year-old just plopped his pacifier. The frequent flyers over at Nourishing Little Souls picked up this hack from a flight attendant for when their little ones’ ears pop en route. Simply pour steaming hot water onto paper towels and stuff them into the bottom of two cups. Then, hold the cups so that they’re sealed over your kid’s ears; any pressure disappears in a flash.

Little anglers can try their fishing skills on the volcanic lake—it’s stocked with trout—and the cabins sit in a forested grove within walking distance of the lake. Each cabin sleeps five (furnished with bunk beds and a full-size bed) and includes a porch, picnic table, fire grill and deck; bathrooms and showers are nearby. There's swimming, boating, bird watching and wildlife viewing and an awesome kids’ play area as well as hiking and horse trails. Psst! Be sure to check out the self-guided nature trail. Little peddlers can also ride bikes on the horse trails as long as they yield to horses. Cabin C21 is pet-friendly.

Dosewallips is an amazing park on the shores of both the freshwater Dosewallips River and the saltwater Hood Canal. There’s boating and swimming and lots for the kiddos to explore. Cabins are sheltered by evergreens and look out over the Olympic Mountains. See if you can spot the rock that looks like Abraham Lincoln. Just the place to cool off on a hot day, Lincoln Rock State Park offers swimming, boating, hiking, bike trails, horseshoe pits, a children’s playground and more. The cabins have great views of the Columbia River and Rocky Reach Dam. And each cabin sleeps five and comes with two rooms and a covered porch, plus a picnic table and fire pit with a grate. Each cabin also has A/C, and the geocache will keep the kids guessing. All cabins are ADA accessible.

Wallace Falls State Park lies along the shores of two rivers and three lakes and features outstanding scenery with no less than nine waterfalls (the tallest is 265 ft). Cabins are within walking distance of the Woody Trail, which leads to Wallace Falls and Wallace Lake. Each cabin has bunk beds that sleep three and a full-size futon that sleeps two as well as a covered front porch, picnic table, fire pit, and BBQ. Activities include hiking, biking, boating, freshwater fishing, swimming and whitewater kayaking. If you're looking ahead, Wallace Falls is also a great location for snowshoeing. Two of the cabins are ADA accessible, and pets are allowed in cabin 3 and 4.

With kitchenettes, a private bathroom (sink/toilet) and A/C, you and your campers can enjoy the good life at Pearrygin Lake (there’s even a coffee pot). Each cabin sleeps four people and is ADA accessible. Cabins are furnished with a full-size bed, full-size foldout couch, table and chairs as well as a picnic table, fire pit and deck. Rolling green lawns lead down from the cabins to the lake, where you can swim, boat, fish or just lounge in your floatie. If you’ve got more energy, try the 3.1 mile Rex Derr trail that starts just east of the boat launch. Pearrygin Lake also has lots to offer year-round, with cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and fat-tire bike rental in the winter. Psst! Impress your kids by splurging on the Vacation House with full bath and linen service.

Unlike the potholes we have to deal with in the city, these potholes are fun. The sand dune and marshy terrain makes a great splashy day for the kiddos–there’s swimming, boating, fishing and whitewater kayaking as well as a great play structure to climb on. Located a short walk from Potholes Reservoir, the cabins are quite rustic (there’s no plumbing but there is electricity and heating/air conditioning). Cabins sleep four to six people and are furnished with one double bed and bunk beds; outside you will find a picnic table and fire ring. Check out cabin 62 if you want to bring your furry friends along.

A great place for spotting wildlife, including Bald Eagles, Rasar State Park is on the shoreline of the Skagit River. The cabins are in an Alder and Fir forest, an easy half-mile walk from the river. Each cabin sleeps five and is ADA accessible. Cabins are furnished with log bunk beds, a queen size log futon, log end tables and a four-person log dining room table. All cabins have a private bathroom with shower. Outside, there’s a covered porch, two Adirondack chairs, fire pit, picnic table and stand up BBQ brazier. Park activities include hiking (3.7 miles of hiking trails and 1 mile of ADA accessible trails), fishing and a children’s play area.

You can’t miss the giant basalt butte “Steamboat Rock” as you drive the winding road to Banks Lake.This State Parkfeatures grassy areas leading to a sandy beach that’s perfect for making sandcastles and a cool lake made for splashing and relaxing. The air-conditioned cabins sleep five, and are furnished with a queen-size futon and bunk beds. All are pet-friendly. Outside, you will find a picnic table and fire pit with grate and plenty of activities to keep your crew busy. Hike, bike, bird-watch (watch out for Bald Eagles), swim, kayak and enjoy the kids’ playground. During the winter, you’ll find ice-fishing, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

If cabin camping is a bit too rustic for you, the Washington State Parks Commission partnered with Wanderlust Camps to bring glamping to Moran State Park on Orcas Island. Book your stay online where luxury awaits (this is perhaps a grownups-only outing). The log cabins and glamping tents at Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes are another fantastic rustic vacay option for families, as are the two Getaway Outposts in the state (one is in Skagit Valley and the other is near Mt. Adams). These tiny house cabins are as charming as they are remote, and they sleep between two and four people.

2. You don’t need to buy a Discover Pass if you’re staying overnight in a Washington state park (your accommodation fee covers vehicle access). But, if you plan on stopping at other Washington state parks, we’d recommended getting the annual pass.
3. Bring the pooch! Some cabins are pet-friendly and the pet fee is $15 per night per pet.
4. Fish away! Kids under 14 do not need a fishing permit in Washington.

There are free shuttle buses between all three lodges, if you want to hit all the parts of the mountain, but for first timers, we recommend choosing one of the lodges for the day (more on which one we recommend below) and committing to the one spot for ease—especially with little ones.
If You Want Your Kids to Take Lessons at Mammoth: Mammoth Ski and Snowboard School is a stellar program, with patient pros who help the little ones become future shredders—they also offer adaptive lessons so those that may have a disability can still enjoy the rush and excitement of heading down the mountain. Kids group lessons start at three-years old and continue up through adult. Lessons are available at all three lodges.
Good to Know about Skiing with Kids
Kids 4 and under ski free at Mammoth Mountain with beginner slopes that are wide and groomed—ideal for beginners (no matter their age). All skiers/riders need a valid ticket to load the chairlifts and gondola, so visit a ticket window and show proof of age to get your little ones a free single or multi-day ticket.
A fantastic family-friendly option is to purchase the Beginner Ticket (available for purchase at a ticket window) and offers lift access to beginner chairlifts at Canyon Lodge (7 and 17), Main Lodge (chairlift 11), and Eagle Lodge (chairlift 15) (as opposed to the entire mountain of lifts) for a discounted rate.
Next-Level Ski Hack: Let’s be honest, getting fit for skis and gear can kind of be annoying—let alone carrying all that gear around from spot to spot. To the rescue? Ski Butlers—an incredibly personal service for ski and snowboarding equipment. Instead of dealing with lines at the ski rental spots around town or in the lodges (and delaying your time on the mountain), Ski Butlers will bring gear to your accommodations—boots, helmets, skis, poles, snowboards, goggles—everything you need for the slopes. Just provide them your stats (height, weight, etc…) and they’ll fit and adjust your gear on-the-spot. They’ll even pick up your gear too so you don’t even need to worry about returning it. Of course, renting gear the old-fashioned way absolutely works as well—and the friendly staff on the mountains will get you the gear you need as quickly as possible.
Good to Know: Another fantastic ski hack? Rather than carry your gear to and from the mountain, you can store your gear slopeside in lockers you can rent. For families, this is a godsend. Private lockers are available at Main and Canyon Lodge.
Canyon Lodge: For beginner skiers and first-timers to the mountain who are looking for the quickest and easiest access to the slopes, we recommend Canyon Lodge. From the Village (even more convenient if you stay here), you take the gondola up to Canyon Lodge where you are delivered to the base and have access to two beginner chairlifts. These runs are relatively short compared to Eagle Lodge’s beginner runs but the terrain varies and the crowds (at least when we were there) remained minimal throughout the day compared to the other lodges.
Good to Know: There is also infant care (newborn-23 months) just steps away from the Canyon Lodge gondola with half and full day options.
Eagle Lodge: For skiers and snowboarders that are looking to progress their skills from green to blue, head to Eagle Lodge. Not only does it have the longest green runs on the mountain, there’s also Eagle Playground, that, according to Mammoth, helps burgeoning shredders “gain confidence on freestyle terrain,” and include features like, “gentle rollers, small snow spines, mini-boxes, and jumps that get bigger and longer as you shred through the park.”
Good to Know: Because there is only one beginner ski lift at Eagle Lodge, it can get more crowded.
Main Lodge: The busiest of the ski areas, in addition to some green runs, beginners can also access Woolly’s Woods and Disco Playground—beginner terrain parks and special featured fun zones for kids looking to work on some new skills. Head to this lodge if you are also planning to take the scenic Panorama Gondola up to the top—dropping you off at 11,053 feet and where you can eat at Eleven53 Cafe and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you have a lift ticket, you can access the gondola for free. Otherwise, up to 2 kids (ages 12 & under) ride free with each paying adult.
If You Think You’re Going to Ski More Regularly: Right now, if you purchase the 2023/24 Ikon Pass, you can take advantage of the Buy Now, Ride Now Deal—meaning you can use your pass this season at Mammoth (ahem, this season, that will most likely, last until August) and other ski and snowboard destinations.
What to Do in Mammoth with Kids Who Don’t Ski or Snowboard (Or if You Don’t Want to Ski Every Day)

1. Go Snowshoeing or Cross Country Skiing in Mammoth
Take the free, orange bus line to Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center (it’s only 10 minutes from the Village) for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are 19 miles of trails to explore with rentals, lessons, and guided tours available. Trails are dog-friendly and fairly flat so if you have a child who can trek it, this is a good spot for a beginner snowshoer.
2. Go Snow Tubing in Mammoth
Bomb down the slick snow lanes at Woolly’s Tube Park for a thrilling good time. For those 42” and smaller who aren’t yet tall enough to enjoy the ride, Woolly’s has a fun snow park area and heated deck serving up hot cocoa and adult beverages. Access to the snow park is easy—simply take the (free) red bus line here and you’ll be dropped off right at the entrance. Woolly’s Tube Park will be open through mid-April.
3. Mammoth Rock ‘N’ Bowl
Take the free red bus line or the town’s trolley (in the evening) to Mammoth Rock ‘N’ Bowl for a laid-back evening of bowling and eats from pizza to salads to poutine and tacos. Sit at a booth or have your food delivered to your bowling lane. You’ll also find a full bar and arcade, as well as a more upscale Brasserie upstairs for a date night-style dining experience.
Where to Eat in Mammoth with Kids
From fine dining to grab-and-go eats, Mammoth’s dining options are much more diverse than you’d expect from such a small town. Most spots have high chairs and kids menu (or dishes pleasing to a kiddo palate) at the ready, lots have table-side crayons and all won’t bat an eyelash if you walk in at prime dinner hour with a gaggle of children. Expect a warm welcome from restaurants eager to serve families—although like any restaurant, if you want to minimize your wait time for food, avoid the 6:30-7:30 p.m. dining hours. One of our favorite spots in the Village is Old New York Deli—and, judging by the packed house we aren’t the only fans of this classic bagel spot. From sandwiches to traditional bagels and cream cheese to baked goods galore, Old New York Deli is a prime spot to fuel up before a day of adventuring.

2. Gomez Restaurant
Nosh on burritos, sizzling fajita plates and delicious enchiladas at this welcoming Mexican restaurant in the Village. Portions are incredibly generous and for those 21+ Gomez offers up 600+ different types of tequila and is home to the “Mammoth Margarita.”

3. Burgers Restaurant
The name of this restaurant sums up its specialty: burgers! Across the street from the Village, Burgers dishes out generous portions of their comfort food. Not into the traditional burger? You’ll also find a variety of equally filling eats like veggie burgers, buffalo burgers, pork baby back ribs and more.
A short walk from the Village, this comfort food dining spot also crafts its own beers since 1995. Burgers and waffle fries rule the menu but you’ll also find flatbreads and tacos to please a variety of cravings.
Located conveniently next to the Canyon gondola, this wine shop inside a cafe (or is a cafe that features a wine shop?) offers hearty breakfast options (eggs, bacon, and potatoes FTW before a big day of skiing, along with doughnuts, crepes filled with Nutella for the kids. They also have an online order-ahead system so you can beat the lines.
If you need your coffee (and a baked good or two), head to this newcomer coffee spot. Expect delicious coffee and amazing pastries and donuts at its new storefront in the heart of downtown Mammoth Lakes.
Delicious food and a laid-back atmosphere makes Toomey’s an ideal spot to grab lunch or dinner. Located in the Village, you’ll find dishes like their coconut mascarpone pancakes, fish tacos and a kids menu that includes chicken fingers, mini burger and fries and more.
There are 19 dining options on the mountain in Mammoth. As with any mountain resort, times will get busiest during lunch so plan accordingly.
Good to Know: You can skip the lines and order ahead online from select locations on and off the mountain via the Mammoth App (this must-download app also offers real-time alerts, weather reports, lift tickets, tracking for you and your friends, and more.)
Where to Stay in Mammoth with Kids
Condos and hotels abound in Mammoth Lakes, and with the town’s free public bus system you really can’t go wrong with your accommodation choice. Still, traveling with kids means convenience—and proximity to shops, dining and activities—can mean the difference between a happy tear-free afternoon and an epic toddler meltdown. Here are family-friendly places to stay in Mammoth:
Best for: Great views, hot tubs, swimming pool, and easy access to Canyon Lodge
Located in the Village, Westin Monache Resort Mammoth boasts mountain views from every room. Each room is equipped with a kitchenette, a small fridge, and a microwave. From the hotel, just walk down the steps to the gondola and get whisked up to Canyon Lodge. The Westin offers a ski valet so you don’t have to schlep your ski equipment back and forth every night. Like The Village Lodge Mammoth, the Westin offers a free shuttle bus service, which is built into the resort fee cost.
Good to Know: Not only are all the bus lines and evening trollies just steps outside of the Westin, if you’re staying at the Westin, they also offer a free shuttle service around town, including to Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center. Just give them a call when you’re ready to get picked up.
Best for: Ultimate convenience to shops and dining
For accommodations that feel more like home book a condo at The Village Lodge Mammoth. Options range from studio condos to three-bedroom deluxe condos. Condos come equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes stocked with coffee, tea, pots, pans, dishware, a full-size fridge, stove and more, which is a huge perk if you want to whip up food for your child or store leftovers. A swimming pool is open daily (even in winter!) with cribs available upon request.
The Village Lodge also offers a free shuttle service anywhere within a 5-mile radius in Mammoth and you’re steps from dining, shopping, most of the major bus lines and the Canyon Village gondola. For those kiddos obsessed with things that go, ask for a room that looks out to the gondola—your child will love watching them come and go all day long.
If being slope-side is your jam, stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn. Located just a few steps from the lifts at the Main Lodge, this spot offers both hotel-style rooms and condos, with the latter featuring kitchenettes. Nearby you’ll find the Yoddler Restaurant and Bar, Sierra General Store and Mountainside Bar and Grill. Because the Inn is slope-side, this area does get a bit quieter once the lifts close and the après crowds have dispersed.
If your kids are too young for ski school or you have babe you’re not ready to hand over to the slope-side childcare, here are the best things to do with young kids in Mammoth:
Bonus: It’s free and if it’s not crowded, you can easily wheel your stroller on and off it for an easy ride. How long is the scenic gondola ride? It’s about 10-15 minutes each way so the adventure can take as little as 30 minutes if you want to just go up and back down again. But we recommend staying at the top and exploring around and take in the stunning views before heading back to the base.
2. Ride Mammoth’s Free Buses
Mammoth is only four miles across, which means you won’t be lost for hours on the different routes. Bonus: This is also free and we found makes for great white noise if you have a baby who loves naps in the front pack.
3. Walk around the Village
Peruse Mammoth gear and locally-sourced products (a favorite is Busy Beez General Store) , load up on coffee at Vida Coffee, chocolate at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, discover new toys at Trendy Tots, or grab a happy hour drink at one of the many kid- and dog-friendly patios (see above on great places to eat). The area is all paved and perfect for a leisurely stroller walk. Make sure to check out all the shops, dining options and events happening at the Village at Mammoth.
Good to Know: If you’re looking for a place to hang out slope-side, the area at Main Lodge behind Broadway Marketplace is emptier than most and is frequently used as a base camp for other families whose parents are trading off hitting the slopes.
4. Look Out for Woolly in the Village
You might catch him on the slopes or in one of the lodges handing out high-fives and hugs to his pint-sized fans. Also check Mammoth’s events calendar for more happenings.
Want to leave LA and be on the slopes in Mammoth in under 2.5 hours flat? Then Advanced Air will get you there. How to Get to Mammoth from the Bay Area
Families who flock to Tahoe know the headaches associated with I-80 traffic, especially when chain control is in effect. Flying from SFO to Mammoth? The flight time is a cool 35 minutes. If you decide to drive to Mammoth, it’s about 5-6 hours from the Bay Area.
Unlike some ski towns you might have visited, there isn’t just one central lodge or downtown area. Mammoth is fairly spread out in the sense that there is the Village, Main Lodge, Old Mammoth and Main St. The free buses or your hotel’s shuttle will get you anywhere you need to go. And, the fact that it’s a bit more spread out means areas won’t be jam-packed and overwhelming for the littles.
The Best Time to Go to Mammoth with Kids
There is never a bad time to visit Mammoth but if you want to introduce your kids to skiing, then springtime, according to the experts, is by far the best time to go. The weather is warmer, the sun is shining and it’s not as windy as it can be during the winter months—no frozen fingers and toes to slow your brood down.

Maya Angelou

Renaissance Woman, 1928-2014
Chalking up dozens of awards and over 50 honorary degrees, Maya Angelou has worn many hats—from nightclub performer and Porgy and Bess cast member to fry cook, sex worker, and Civil Rights activist. She is best known for her written work—particularly her poetry and her memoirs spanning a series of seven autobiographies, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Before Amanda Gorman there was Maya Angelou, who became the first female inaugural poet in 1993.
Interesting fact: In 1944, after dropping out of San Francisco’s George Washington High at 16, Maya Angelou set her sights on becoming a cable car operator. She wanted the job because she admired the uniforms, but at first she was refused an application. She sat in the company offices every day for two weeks until she was hired, becoming one of the first Black cable car operators in San Francisco.
Juana Briones
Founding Mother, 1802-1889
Often referred to as “The Founding Mother of San Francisco,” Juana Briones was born near Santa Cruz, of mixed Spanish and African descent. Many of her family members arrived in Alta California with the de Anza and de Portola expeditions. Briones, a midwife, herbal medicine healer, and successful entrepreneur, gave birth to 11 children and adopted one. In 1844 she was granted a clerical separation (almost unheard of at the time) from her physically abusive and alcoholic husband. The same year she purchased the 4,400 acre Rancho La Purisma Concepcion in present day Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills. Through the late 1850s and 1860s she successfully fought in court to retain the title to her land in San Francisco and Santa Clara Counties.
Interesting fact: Juana Briones was killed in a cow stampede in the then city of Mayfield, now part of Palo Alto. There is an elementary school and park named for her in Palo Alto.
Charlotte L. Brown

Justice Seeker, 1839-?
Before Rosa Parks there was Charlotte L. Brown. She was the plaintiff in one of the earliest civil rights cases in California after being forcibly removed from a whites only horse-drawn streetcar near her home on Filbert Street in San Francisco in 1863. Brown won her case and was awarded $25, and later in criminal court the conductor was convicted of assault and battery against her. Only three days after the first trial she was ejected from a streetcar again, and once more filed suit against them, winning again. The Black-owned newspaper, the Pacific Appeal, noted at the time that the verdict “establishes the right, by law, of colored persons to ride in such conveyances.” Charlotte L. Brown’s case paved the way for similar cases that challenged the segregationist policies of private streetcar companies, culminating in an 1893 ruling officially outlawing segregation on state streetcars. The case was one of the first of several brought by Black activists in the U.S. against segregation and exclusion in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Interesting fact: Brown’s father was born enslaved and her mother, a free seamstress, purchased his freedom. They lived as Free People of Color in Baltimore in 1850, before moving to San Francisco and becoming part of the city’s burgeoning Black middle class.
Dominique Crenn

Lyrical Chef, 1965-
Dominique Crenn elevated the San Francisco dining scene to the world stage after becoming the first female chef in the United States to earn three Michelin stars at her eponymous restaurant, Atelier Crenn. Lines of poetry literally accompany each course and her exquisite food is presented like an elaborate work of art. Her one Michelin-starred wine bar, Bar Crenn, is also a red hot attraction. Known for her creative modernist menus as well as her uncompromising vision, she is acclaimed as a chef and a business leader.
Interesting fact: Crenn is engaged to Coyote Ugly and NCIS star, Maria Bello.
Isadora Duncan

Innovative Dancer, 1877-1927
Isadora Duncan, the “Mother of Modern Dance,” brought her unique free-spirited and untrained style to the field of ballet. Her ideas spread across the U.S. to Europe and the Soviet Union, and helped bring about modern expressive dance. Duncan was born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland, which is where she met Florence Treadwell Boynton. Boynton created a home and dance school in the Berkeley Hills that reflected Duncan’s dance style which was influenced by Greek art and sculpture with dances in flowing tunics. This Greek collonaded “Temple of Wings” helped solidify Berkeley’s turn-of-the-century reputation as the Athens of the West.
Interesting fact: Not only was Isadora Duncan one of the most innovative and internationally renowned dancers of her time, she also leaves behind the lesson not to wear a long scarf while riding in a car. She was strangled after it became entangled in the rear wheels.
Dian Fossey

Gutsy Naturalist, 1932-1985
San Francisco-born Dian Fossey attended U.C. Davis and San Jose City College before travelling to Rwanda where she spent 18 years studying the endangered mountain gorilla. Her “war on poaching” is generally credited with reversing the downward trend in the animal population, which reached a low of 250 in 1981. In the process she made a lot of enemies and was found brutally murdered in her cabin in 1985. Fossey made huge contributions to the study of mountain gorilla behavior and a movie was made based on her best selling autobiography, Gorillas in the Mist.
Kamala Harris
Vice President of the United States, 1964-
Born in Oakland, Kamala Harris served the people of California for many years as Attorney General for the state of California (2011-2017) and U.S. Senator (2017-2021). In 2021 she was inaugurated as vice president. She is the United States' first female vice president, the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, and the first Black and first Asian American vice president. After securing her historic win for Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris heralded, “I may be the first woman to hold this office. But I won’t be the last.”
After marrying twice and spending the first 30 years of her life as a low key young man named “Lew,” Louise Lawrence was finally able to fully embrace who she was on the inside and moved from Berkeley to San Francisco to begin living full time as a woman. She placed personal ads and regularly scanned the newspapers for cross dressing arrests in order to find other trans and gender non-conforming people.
Lawrence started assisting at the U.C.S.F. Langley Porter Clinic and lectured to the doctors there in order to convince them not to classify being transgender as a mental disorder. Her work at U.C.S.F. put her in touch with Dr. Alfred Kinsey in 1948 who had recently released his book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. By then, Louise Lawrence had amassed a network of nearly 200 trans people across the United States and decided to share their stories with Kinsey. She felt that gender variance was missing from his first book, and she directly facilitated its inclusion in his follow-up works. Without Lawrence’s efforts it likely would have been left out.
Interesting Fact: Louise Lawrence housed strangers travelling cross country to San Francisco to undergo gender confirmation surgery and also counseled them.
Julia Morgan

Prolific Architect, 1872-1957
After graduating from Oakland High School and then U.C. Berkeley near the turn of the twentieth century, Julia Morgan became the first woman admitted to a prestigious architectural program in Paris, and in 1904 the first woman in California licensed to practice architecture. A project assigned to her by Phoebe Hearst to improve one of her estates led to a meeting with her son, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, and her most famous commission—Hearst Castle.
She was one of the leaders in the Bay Area Arts and Crafts Movement and her buildings can be found all over the Bay Area, including the Berkeley Women’s City Club; several buildings at U.C. Berkeley including the Hearst Greek Theater and the Women’s Gymnasium; six buildings at Mills College including El Campanil, the Margaret Carnegie Library, and the Student Union; the Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchants Exchange Building; numerous YMCAs; and the redesign of San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. In the course of her career, she designed more than 700 buildings, and in 2014 she became the first woman awarded the AIA Gold Medal for Architecture.
Isa Noyola

Trans Crusader, 1978-
Bay Area-raised Isa Noyola, is a Latina transgender activist and deputy director of the Transgender Law Center, the largest transgender-led civil rights organization in America. She organized the first national anti-trans violence protest in 2015, with over 100 activists—particularly trans women of color—protesting the violence trans communities face. Noyola also founded and serves as a national advocate for El/La Para Translatinas which seeks to improve the quality of life for TransLatinas in the Bay Area. She is a tireless activist in the LGBT immigration rights movement, advocating for transgender women being detained at ICE detention centers.
Amy Tan

Heritage-Inspired Writer, 1952-
Oakland-born Amy Tan, author of The Bonesetter’s Daughter, The Kitchen God’s Wife, and most famously her best-selling novel, The Joy Luck Club, was often inspired by her mother’s stories of growing up in China. The Joy Luck Club became the most prominent example of Asian Americans on screen for a quarter century. (This writer saw a scene from the movie adaptation being filmed at U.C. Berkeley.)
Interesting fact: While pursuing a doctorate in linguistics at U.C. Berkeley, Tan’s best friend and roommate was murdered. She was asked to identify the body, and the shock of it all left her temporarily mute and prompted her to leave school and become a speech therapist for children.

Looking for a picturesque dining experience you won’t soon forget? Book a reservation with one of the resort’s coveted igloos. These heated clear domes are adorably lit up (think: Instagram-worthy neon lights demanding you to “Stay Cozy”) and outfitted with comfy couches, chairs, coffee tables, and blankets.
The menu is filled with shareable plates and snacks, but we recommend jumping straight to dessert, in which guests can opt for a s’mores board that comes with a personal solo stove and sticks for fireside roasting. But if sticky campfire sandwiches aren’t your thing, fear not: in addition to jumbo marshmallows, graham crackers, and Godiva chocolates, this spread also features just-out-of-the-oven cookies, truffles, and strawberries alongside an abundance of dipping sauces—we’re talking caramel, peanut butter mousse, and Nutella.
And although kiddos can sip hot cocoa or spiced apple cider, the igloos offer an exclusive lineup of signature cocktails (the white peppermint martini is intensely refreshing!) and hot toddies.
Each igloo fits up to six guests, and on busy nights, advance reservations are kept to roughly 90 minutes. Instead of steep drink minimums or the required purchase of bottle service that comes with many urban Igloo experiences, Grand Geneva requires a non-refundable fee ($50 fee on weekdays, and $65 on weekends) per igloo. With only a handful on property, this is perhaps the hottest ticket in town, so book it as soon as you can.

Avid skiers and snowboarders will be shocked at how much shredding is possible in southern Wisconsin and among the 20 downhill ski runs at The Mountain Top. Grand Geneva’s official ski zone is designed for all ages and abilities, so guests can conquer the slopes—including a handful of jaw-dropping double-black and black diamond courses—or bop along the bunny hill.
The ski resort also boasts three chair lifts, two “magic carpet” lifts (think of them as those airport “people movers” on an incline!), and a six-acre terrain park perfect for cross-country skiing. But perhaps one of the most beloved aspects of the Mountain Top are its hours—and the opportunity to go night skiing until 9 or 10 p.m. any night of the week.
Another perk is that you don’t need to worry about booking lift tickets based on impossible-to-predict weather conditions. Grand Geneva’s snowmaking abilities allow the ski resort to remain open even when there’s no snowfall.
For those new to skiing or snowboarding, Grand Geneva is a perfect entry point—far less intimidating that monstrous mountain resorts out west. Not only can you rent all the gear you need, including helmets, at the ski chalet, but you can also sign up for a bevy of classes. For instance, with the popular 90-minute private or semi-private lessons, certified instructors will encourage beginners (young and old alike!) to build confidence and basic skills. Even advanced students can get trained on the latest skiing or snowboarding techniques with a refresher course.
Insider Tip: Affordable half-day sessions are available for children (three- to six-year-olds can enroll in Snow Cubs and seven- to 13-year-olds can join Mountain Mites) on weekends, and they provide a nice block of time for parents to get some runs in on their own.
3. Explore More Snow . . . and Ice!
The slopes are a major wintertime draw to be sure, but it’s wise to save some time for Grand Geneva’s surprisingly long list of other outdoor wintertime adventures. Consider snowshoeing throughout more than five miles of trails, or if you prefer to stay as close to apres-ski options as possible, there’s an outdoor ice skating rink and a dedicated sledding hill, both situated alongside the base of the Mountain Top’s ski hills.
The sledding area is ideal for children—big enough to provide thrills but small enough for even the littlest sets of legs to handle the walk back up.
Insider Tip: Although you may have luck just showing up, consider booking a 1.5-hour slot for ice skating or sledding in advance to be safe. And if you have room, pack your own sled. Otherwise, it’s a $10 rental fee on top of access to the hill.
Of course, Leinenkugel’s Mountain Top Lodge is the perfect place to put your feet up and still take in all the wintertime action. Truly, the lodge’s outdoor rooftop patio—complete with a fire pit and heat lamps—provides a front-row seat to some of the steepest slopes, and most impressive skiers and snowboarders, in all of Wisconsin.
OK, OK, it might feel like a cop-out to plan a pool day during a winter-wonderland-style trip, but what better way to warm up than with a dip in Grand Geneva’s luxe indoor pool? Better yet, families are going to want to skip straight ahead to Moose Falls, the 50,000-square-foot waterpark located inside Timber Ridge Lodge, another one of Grand Geneva’s properties. At a balmy 86 degrees, it’s the ultimate reward for time spent outside in the freezing cold.
The waterpark features 35-foot-high slides that take you on an epic 300-foot adventure of twists and turns, eventually leading you to a—because it bears repeating—heated pool. For a more tame ride, unwind in The Lazy River for more than 500 feet of relaxation. There’s also a “Tiny Timbers” section, which offers swings, slides, spouts, and playful water tables to help babies and toddlers get adjusted to water.
Insider Tip: For parents needing a moment away, sneak off to the indoor-outdoor hot tub tucked away in the far corner of the water park. Children six and older are allowed in, but it usually serves as a serene sanctuary from the all-ages adventures just inside.
5. Enjoy Family-Friendly Activities Without Leaving the Hotel
Determined to stay inside and dry? There’s nothing an hour curled up by the fire in the Grand Geneva’s main lobby can’t cure, but families also have access to an action-packed schedule of activities. From complimentary trivia, bingo, and “Minute to Win It” mini-challenges to creative arts-and-crafts sessions, nearly every hour offers something to stave off boredom. Make your own snowflakes, paint a ceramic piggybank, build a stuffed animal (in which you add a heart and fill out its birth certificate!), or experiment with oobleck. The hotel even offers 6 p.m. movie nights, free of charge.
It might seem strange, but exploring the hotel itself is a worthy endeavor. And if you get lost once or twice (or, we won’t judge, a handful of times) while walking around the hotel, there’s at least a good reason for it: The resort’s layout is a tribute to the famous Frank Lloyd Wright, the patriarch of Prairie School-style architecture, which is more common in this part of Wisconsin. Wright’s signature designs influenced the look and feel of the low-rise buildings of Grand Geneva, from the stone and wood materials to the maze-like corridors to the fact that the property was literally built into the hillside.
And, of course, cozying up in your hotel room is as wintertime-approved as it gets. All units feature balconies overlooking scenic views of those very hills, and smart TVs that can be synced up with any of your favorite streaming services (the bathroom mirror even has a TV embedded in it!).
In particular, families with young kids will love the oversized bathtubs for washing away chlorine. And parents who may want to leave age-appropriate children alone in the room for a bit will appreciate an added safety feature: Peep holes in the doors are located about four feet high so kids can check on who’s knocking before opening the door.

For an up-close look at some real desert critters, this zoo plus botanical garden focuses on wildlife from North America and Africa. You can tour exhibits like a replica of a Northeast African village and get personal with some Nigerian dwarf goats. The new Rhino Safari is a spot you'll definitely want to visit and it's right near the giraffes (pay $8 for a chance to feed them!).
Catch some knowledgeable animal chats, feed the giraffes, ride the endangered animal carousel, and explore the vast array of trails that loop through the Sonoran Desert (FYI: the trails are closed in the summer). And finally, plan to spend at least 30 minutes checking out one of the best outdoor G-scale model train exhibits we've ever seen.
Good to Know: Arrive early, when it’s still cool out, you’re likely to catch more animals in action (they prefer to lounge around when the sun’s high in the sky) except for nocturnal animals like the big cats, who tend to come out closer to sunset. When it gets hot, head to the air-conditioned Discovery Center.

This roadside attraction is impossible to miss on your way into Palm Springs, but we recommend reserving this stop for when you are on your way out of town, headed back to Los Angeles. Touted as the world’s biggest dinosaur museum, you can check out giant robotic dinosaurs (don’t worry, they’re more kitschy than terrifying) for a fee. Let the little ones climb into the mouth of a huge model T-Rex (now in themed paint-suits!), ride the animatronic Brontosaurus, and then search through the sand at the Dino Dig to win a prize.
Good to Know: Stop by on a Sat. or Sun. between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., to score a dinosaur-themed ice cream treat from The Wafflesaurus Truck.

The twisty tree shapes, Cholla cactus forests and blobby boulders in Joshua Tree make wonderful Dr. Suess-style memories for your kids. For a quick day trip, stick to the exhibitions along the main roads. We recommend entering via the south entrance and exiting via the west entrance (or vice versa). This way you can hit up all the hot spots and stop for some hiking along the way. We especially love stopping at the White Tank Campground and hiking to Arch Rock. It is a super easy hike and there were tons of boulders for climbing.
Good to Know: You'll want to make sure you have gassed up your car before you head to the park as gas stations are few and far between near the park entrances. Bring food, water and sunscreen with you, check the weather before you go and do yourself a favor and pay your entrance fee online in advance. You'll save yourself a major headache and avoid the line at the park entrance. If you're looking for the quintessential Joshua Tree photo opp, you'll want to know that most of the official Joshua trees are located near the west entrance (side note: they aren't even trees at all, just a tree-like version of the yucca plant).

4. Footgolf
That's not a typo—footgolf is a thing and almost any age can play making this a must-do for a family-friendly activity in Palm Springs. Rather than swing a club, you kick around a soccer ball and try and make it into the 21"-sized holes. It's golf crossed with soccer if you will. You can rent soccer balls on site (no need to bring your own) as well as a golf cart—which let's face it, is half the fun for the little ones.

You've seen that giant windmill farm in the Coachella Valley, en route to Palm Springs plenty of times, but how much do you really know about the iconic site? For $49 per car (up to five people) you can take a self-guided driving tour and learn how windmills work, why there are so many in the desert, and how much electricity they produce. The tour consists of 10 stops, with two additional (optional) stops off property.

6. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Even pool-obsessed kids can sometimes have enough sunny splash time. Try a favorite, midday break with a change of scenery and climate. This tramway, built in the 60s, will take you and yours 2.5 miles above the desert floor into the San Jacinto mountains and the snowy wilderness awaiting at the top. Kids will love the rotating tram, which guarantees spectacular views no matter where you’re seated. There are dining options at the top so don't worry if your brood gets hungry.
If there is snow, you can have a snowball fight, go sledding, snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing before descending back to the balmy poolside oasis of your hotel. Even when it's not snowy, it's a lot cooler at the top, and fun for kids to explore the hiking and walking trails, and take in the jaw-dropping views.
Altitude sickness can occur so pay attention to your body, drink lots of water and if you or your kids are afraid of heights, this may not be the experience for you. It's not for the faint of heart but totally worth it once you get to the top.
If your kids get tired of the hotel pool or you've rented a place without a spot to splash, head over to the Palm Desert Aquatic Center where non-residents can take advantage of the various pools, multiple slides, diving boards, and a variety of play features on site that are designed to delight water lovers of all ages.

One word: Splashtopia. Sounds awesome, right? And it is. This knock-your-socks-off water feature, nearly two acres big, has two 100-foot water slides, a 425-foot lazy river, a jacuzzi with cliff views and a sandy beach. You can spend all day, every day here—just order food from Splash Grill and you’re good to go.

For a uniquely Palm Springs experience, consider a stop at The Shields Date Garden (just look for the larger-than-life knight in shining armor) and The Walk at Shields—where, for $5 a person (kids under 12 are free), you can stroll along a garden path that meanders through a 17-acre date farm. Chicago is home to plenty of easy-to-navigate hiking trails but North Park Nature Center’s Walking Stick Woods, a 12-acre woodland on the north side of the city, offers trails that wind through woodland, wetland, prairie, and savanna. The woodland creatures that live here are easier to spot in the wintertime. Post-hike, head to the center’s discovery room, where a hands-on table of natural objects and interactive displays highlight the animals that call this corner of the city home.
Northerly Island offers a slice of nature with the bonus of unbeatable city views. Don some snowshoes and explore this pristine prairie in the wintertime. Snow trekking is offered on the island on select Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon, weather permitting. The cost is $5 to check out a pair of snowshoes, available in both kid and adult sizes.
Sagauway Canyon is Chicagoland’s very own Grand Canyon. Located in the Des Plaines River Valley, it’s a dolomite canyon surrounded by cliff and ravine forests, a rarity in the flat Midwest. In the wintertime, Sagawau Canyon’s Environmental Learning Center becomes Sagawau Nordic, a premier full-service cross-country ski center that provides ski rentals, groomed trails, and lessons at all levels and ages hosted by PSIA Gold Medal Ski School-trained instructors.
Step back in time to experience life on a working circa 1890s farm in the wintertime at Kline Creek Farm at Timber Ridge Forest Preserve in West Chicago. Watch as costumed interpreters harvest ice from the frozen lake, shear the ewes in preparation for lambing in March or prepare wintery treats by a fire. Stroll the snowy farm and meet the animals that live here year-round.
Mid-January, thousands of eagles migrate to Starved Rock and stay through March. They’re easy to spot as they soar through the sky or perch on the treetops. Bring binoculars and head out on an eagle-spotting hike of your own or sign up for one of the park’s many naturalist-guided hikes.
