You may never see the kids after they’ve visited the brand-new youth and teen centers

Cruise ships are getting bigger and better these days and Princess Cruises is here to play. Their newest ship, the Sun Princess, is set to debut in February 2024 and will feature the most over-the-top family activity zone ever seen on a Princess Cruise Lines ship plus reimagined kid and teen zones. Located on the top three decks of the Sun Princess, the new activity zone named “Park19” will feature simulated hang gliding, a two-story climbing structure, a splash zone, and even a hammock area for parents who need a little break from it all.

“Park19 as the name suggests is a new space created for all our guests, including activities to bring together multi-generational travel families in a location with spectacular views and fun outdoor activities for all,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “The new area was tailored based on guest feedback for more family and group activities spaces.”

Located on decks 19, 20, and 21, Park19 was envisioned for active guests and multi-generational families to explore and connect through inclusive and engaging activities, including:

  • Sea Breeze – Inspired by the dream of hang gliding but in a safe environment, the Sea Breeze is the first Rollglider on a cruise ship and takes guests high above to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and breathtaking ports of call. Using an overhead track, guests are seated and harnessed to this electric ride which reaches speeds of up to 11 mph during the 60- to 90-second experience that is also ADA accessible.
  • Coastal Climb – On this engaging climbing structure guests ascend from decks 19 to 20  through a series of obstacles. Once at the top, guests can take in the gorgeous views before sliding back down to the bottom.
  • The Lookout – At the top of the climbing structure, adventurers make their way to The Lookout, an open-air observation deck, to take in stunning 360º views from the highest point on the Sun Princess.
  • The Net – Harnessed above deck 19, guests are challenged to trek across unstable bridges, a z-shaped balance beam, and climb cargo nets.
  • Infinite Horizon – For those who love heights, leaning tilt walls cantilevered over the side of the ship allow guests to peer out from deck 19 and look down to deck nine and beyond.
  • Hammock Area – Another first for Princess, relaxing hammocks allow Park19 visitors to take a break from exploring to hang out with family and friends.
  • Splash Zone – A whimsical splash area with pop jets and a beautiful water sculpture offers a refreshing and relaxing area to chill.
  • Recreational Court – From ping pong, shuffleboard, Xponential Fitness classes, and morning meditation, a rotation of sports and wellness options will be offered to guests in this multifunction sports court.
  • Jogging Track – A refreshing open-air track allows guests to walk, jog or run at their own leisure and pace, with 6.7 times around the track equaling one mile.

Kids will also be thrilled to see all the excitement coming to the youth and teen centers on decks 6 and 7. These complimentary areas include:

  • Firefly Park – This family center is a place to play together or drop kids off for a program of art projects, theme parties, and group games. Firefly Park also invites families with babies and toddlers, ages six months to three, to crawl and engage their senses with a dedicated play area. After-hours group babysitting is available from 10 pm – 1 am for $5 per hour, for ages three – 12.
  • Neon Grove (tweens) and The Underground (teens) – Located on deck seven, two separate areas offer an inviting space for tweens and teens to hang out, socialize, and just have fun. Both spaces feature colorful, comfy sofas and chairs for lounging, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles, plus air hockey, foosball, and skeeball. Program activities for these age groups include ship scavenger hunts, movie nights, friendly competitions, and dance parties.

“These expanded offerings give younger cruisers plenty to explore and enjoy aboard Sun Princess, creating an even more family-friendly experience with something for everyone regardless of age,” Padgett added.

Save some money on your next family vacation by bringing the kids along for free

Taking a cruise is at the top of many families’ vacation wishlists. The ability to enjoy activities for every age group, eat plenty of tasty food, and see great destinations without changing hotels makes cruising the ideal vacation. Even better? Enjoying a cruise that allows children to sail for free. Because while a cruise is a lot of fun, the cost can quickly add up. Some cruise lines offer this perk year-round and others have specials to keep an eye out for. To make it a little easier, we put together a list of those cruise lines that offer this special option to those vacationing with young children.

Royal Caribbean

Home to the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean looks to ensure that you never hear the dreaded “I’m bored!” In addition to having the tallest slide at sea, Royal Caribbean ships offer activities such as surf simulators, Broadway musicals, youth and teen clubs, multiple restaurants, and trapeze school. Royal Caribbean often has Kids Sail Free promotions where children 12 and under cruise for free with two passengers. These deals apply to three nights or longer sailings when booked in the same cabin as qualifying guests.

Princess Cruises

With highly rated kid and teen clubs, putt-putt golf, dance classes, movies under the stars, and special parents’ night out events, Princess Cruises offers plenty of opportunities for vacationing families to have fun. From onboard shows to the educational programs developed in conjunction with Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, cruising on The Love Boat promises to be entertaining. There are also plenty of dining opportunities to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. On Princess, 3rd and 4th passengers on the same booking sail for free (excluding fees, taxes, and deposits) on select itineraries, including unique destinations like Hawaii, Antarctica, and trans-Atlantic voyages.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Families sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line have plenty of opportunities to have a vacation they won’t forget. With stops at ports worldwide, including multiple locations in Africa, there’s a trip for every type of group. With an eye on helping with the comforts of those traveling with children, Norwegian has family balcony staterooms near the pool deck and youth program areas. There are multiple choices for dining from main dining rooms, buffets, and room service, with children 12 and under eating free at all of Norwegian’s specialty restaurants. In addition, 3rd and 4th guests in one stateroom sail for free on select sailings.

Holland America Line

Known for its elegance, Holland America Line isn’t just for older passengers. Families with young children are welcomed warmly onboard, and there are plenty of activities for kids to enjoy. Those ages 3 to 17 have access to the onboard kids club, where there are plenty of activities and educational presentations depending on ports of call. Dining options offer everything from specialty restaurants to burgers and hot dogs. And larger families will enjoy the suites, some offering complimentary laundry services. To help encourage more family travel, Holland America allows guests 18 and under to travel for free when booked as a 3rd or 4th guest on select cruises. The offer has no expiration date but is limited to up to two children per booking and doesn’t include taxes, fees, or port charges.

CroisiEurope Cruises

A unique vacation experience is taking a river cruise. More intimate ships with passenger numbers in the hundreds instead of thousands, river cruises allow guests to visit smaller cities more inland than a traditional cruise line. While some river cruises don’t allow children, CroisiEurope has family-friendly cruises in Portugal, the Rhine, Italy, and Spain that enable children ages 16 and under to sail free. With all-inclusive menus that they adapt for younger pallets, excursions, and waived single supplements for grandparents sailing in a separate cabin alone, it’s an opportunity to experience a different type of cruising.

MSC Cruises

A newer addition to cruise lines that have ships based out of the United States, MSC Cruises has been a staple in European cruising for over 30 years. The fourth largest cruise line in the world, they know cruising and families. Family-friendly excursions with special pricing for children, kids clubs, and special kids’ areas in restaurants add to a vacation everyone will remember. And MSC’s partnership with The LEGO® Group as their exclusive entertainment partner means new play areas, plenty of LEGO bricks to build with, and an experience once every cruise dedicated to everything LEGO. MSC occasionally has promotions where children age 17 and under sail for free as the 3rd and 4th passengers on select sailings. These promotions are subject to availability and exclude fees, taxes, and drink packages for minors.

Star Clippers

Have you dreamed of taking a family vacation on a classic tall ship? Star Clippers makes it possible! With destinations in the Caribbean, Central America, and Europe, there are plenty of opportunities to explore new cultures. While this line doesn’t have a kids club, there are nautical activities on board, such as knot-tying classes, climbing the mast and helping the crew hoist a sail, and excursions on shore to keep them entertained. Now through July 31, 2023, Star Clippers has a “kids under 18 years old sail free” offer, plus 10 percent off for grandparents on select 2023 and 2024 cruises, making it the perfect time to schedule a unique family reunion.

The Royal Caribbean Icon of the Sea is impressing us even while it’s still under construction

There’s a good reason Royal Caribbean is a favorite cruise line of families: it’s downright impossible to experience boredom on its ships. From expansive pools to immersive entertainment and standout dining, it has paved the way for much of the industry. And when the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas welcomes guests in early 2024, it will become the world’s largest ship to ever set sail, introducing cruisers to never-before-seen at-sea experiences and classic staples of the brand.

We recently had the opportunity to visit a currently in-construction Icon of the Seas at Finland’s Meyer Turku, largely regarded as one of the finest shipyards in the world. On any given day, up to 3,000 workers are tasked with making this almost unfathomable dream a reality.

Construction photo of RCL Icon of the Seas courtesy of Carly Caramanna

To be frank, this ship gives new meaning to pushing the envelope. And avid cruisers are already eating it up with its first public sailing completely selling out in less than 24 hours.

At 20 total decks, the 1,198-foot-long ship can accommodate up to 7,600 guests and is being billed as “the world’s best family vacation.” The name of the game here is bigger and better than ever before—a theme you’ll notice throughout. It’s an innovative amalgamation of adventure that combines foodie delights, a multitude of entertainment, relaxing poolside finds, and theme park fun all wrapped up into one vacation. It’s truly a playground for the young, the old, and everything in between.

From the largest waterpark at sea to newly conceived family-friendly neighborhoods, here’s what we’re most excited for when Icon of the Seas takes her maiden voyage in 2024.

The most water-based fun at sea

Construction photo of Category 6 courtesy of Carly Caramanna

If you’ve ever been on a ship with limited pool venues, you know what a drag that can be as spaces quickly fill up with guests—that won’t be a problem on Icon of the Seas. With the Icon setting sail to the Caribbean, pristine weather can be enjoyed from a whopping 7 pools and 9 whirlpools—adding up to a total of 62% more water surface area than previous liners.

Royal Caribbean

Chill Island, one of the ship’s neighborhoods, will act as the heart of the water-based fun and be complete with the brand’s first-ever swim-up bar and 4 of the ship’s pools across its three levels.

Royal Caribbean

Here, guests will find the largest pool ever at sea, Royal Bay, outfitted with lush palm trees and in-water seating, and an adults-only retreat. The Hideaway, located at the ship’s stern, will feature the first suspended infinity pool at sea offering 180-degree stunning views.

Some serious thrills

Construction photo of Crowns Edge courtesy of Carly Caramanna

The self-proclaimed adrenaline junkies will clamor over Thrill Island, home to Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea. There are 6 record-breaking water slides to choose from, including the tallest drop slide at sea and the first open free-fall slide at an incline of 66 degrees.

Royal Caribbean

Not for the faint of heart, Thrill Island will also house Crown’s Edge, an over-the-sea hybrid ropes course-meets-skywalk where guests will hang 154 feet above the waves alongside the ship’s crown and anchor emblem.

All-new neighborhood Surfside

Royal Caribbean splits the layout of its ships up into several different themed neighborhoods—and Icon of the Seas is welcoming a mix of cruise fan favorites, like a new-and-improved version of Central Park, along with new neighborhoods.

Construction photo of Central Park courtesy of Carly Caramanna

The all-new Surfside solves a common problem associated with family-friendly destinations: kid-focused areas with virtually nothing for the parents or grandparents to enjoy. The colorful, open-air promenade was specifically designed for young families and promises to be a place where the entire family can enjoy the day with something for everyone. Little kids can splash around across its water experiences, like playscapes and pint-sized slides, while parents can have fun too with a bar that features menus for both kids and adults.

Attached to Surfside, families can find easy access to the complimentary Adventure Ocean, the cruise line’s award-winning youth program. New for the Icon, ‘Admiral Awesome’ will be a sort of new-age, kid-centric cruise director designated with keeping the fun going for families as the head of LOL (leader of laughter).

Plenty of teen & tween fun

Royal Caribbean

Teens and tweens can often feel out of place when cruising as it can be challenging to navigate social situations. Royal Caribbean attempts to ease that with a hangout just for them, Social 020. The posh lounge will up the ante with a comfy, lounge-style setting, video games, and movie viewing. There are plenty of other onboard activities to break the ice, like a mini golf course, rock climbing, FlowRider surf simulator, a sports court, laser tag, an escape room, and the largest ice-skating arena at sea.

Thoughtfully designed rooms

Royal Caribbean

There’s no getting around it. Cruise ship cabins can prove to be tight quarters when traveling with your family. For the Icon, Royal Caribbean is introducing a staggering 28 categories that range from standard rooms to suites with a specific focus on accommodating families comfortably. With 2805 staterooms, these intuitively laid floor plans maximize the square footage availability ensuring everyone can have their own space and storage. Conveniences include split-design bathrooms (a game changer when getting ready for the day!) and secluded bunk alcoves for kids complete with their own televisions.

For the ultimate splurge, Royal Caribbean will be debuting the one-of-a-kind ultimate family townhouse, a three-story family suite donning a white picket fence-lined yard and an in-suite slide.

20+ dining experiences

Royal Caribbean

Foodies rejoice! It’s safe to say that you won’t go famished on this new ship. There will be over 20 dining experiences, including new and returning signature options that range from casual window-service spots to a supper club—and that number cranks up to 40+ when you include bars and lounges.

AquaDome Market will be the line’s first-ever food hall, and a perfect solution to the family with differing cravings as the location will feature five different stalls with food ranging from savory crepes to Mediterranean delights. An all-new kid-approved buffet, located in Surfside, will operate morning, noon, and night ensuring you won’t have to leave the water-filled fun for a refueling bite.

An impressive amount of live entertainment

Construction photo of AquaDome courtesy of Carly Caramanna

Entertainment is a beloved staple of cruising and the Icon will offer pretty much everything and anything you could think of, from comedy shows and karaoke to dueling pianos. The AquaDome features jaw-dropping 220-degree wraparound ocean views (and a soaring 55-foot-tall waterfall) with nightly entertainment housed in its AquaTheater. The highlight will be an aquatic show utilizing state-of-the-art projection technology and robotics.

Royal Caribbean

In addition to Royal Caribbean’s original superhero show The Effectors, the flagship production will be a 90-minute Broadway-style staging of The Wizard of Oz utilizing a showstopping digitally created tornado.

Icon of the Seas, the newest of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class ships, will begin sailing year-round in early 2024 out of Port Miami on 7-night western and eastern Caribbean vacations.

So stock up that carry-on with all the supplies you need, and per TikToker Jai Lynn, you are able to request that no agent tampers with anything your little one might touch with their mouth.

Balmy waters, interesting cultures, days in the sun, exciting music, and plenty of history await families who cruise to the Caribbean

Whether you are a die-hard cruiser or considering one for the first time, we’re here to say that a Princess Cruise to the Caribbean should definitely be on your family’s must-do list. Princess Cruises has found the right balance of activities for kids, engaging excursions, delicious food, and comfortable cabins. Their Caribbean cruise will take you to interesting countries like Honduras and Belize where you can experience the local culture. Here’s the full scoop on what you can expect when you sail with Princess Cruises.

Cabins on Sky Princess

There are a variety of cabin choices available for passengers on Princess Cruises. But while an Interior cabin may seem the best, inexpensive option, we recommend families with three or more people consider at least a Balcony cabin. The extra space and storage will help families feel more relaxed while getting ready and provide additional seating. The third and fourth beds in a Balcony cabin are in the ceiling. Your room steward will take them down every night and put them back up every morning. These beds work great for children who are a little older. You’ll also have a front-row seat whenever the ship enters and leaves port.

Balcony suite on Sky Princess cruise ship. Two twin beds with one additional twin bed lowered from ceiling with ladder attached. Night stands between beds have lights turned on.

For those able to splurge, a mini-suite or suite provides even more space with a separate sitting area, a sofa bed (which works well with younger children), additional berth beds in the ceiling, and a balcony. Suites also come with a complimentary mini-bar for parents, priority reservations for excursions, priority boarding and disembarkment, two televisions, a bathroom with a tub, and complimentary laundry services, which comes in handy for families on longer cruises.

Tip: Unpack your suitcases and stay awhile! Princess ships, especially newer ones, have plenty of storage and closet space. This includes the bathroom, where there are built-in shelves with railings. And no need to bring soap, shampoo, or lotion—all are provided in the rooms.

Staying Connected with Princess MedallionClass®

Princess Cruises

Keeping connected with family members onboard Princess Cruises is easy with Princess MedallionClass. A small, wearable device, the Medallion allows passengers to have a touch-free boarding experience, unlock their cabin door hands-free, and order food or drinks to wherever they are on the ship (there is the ability to restrict ordering privileges for children), and message each other through the phone app. The best feature for parents is that the Medallion lets you find cabinmates anywhere on the ship. So while parents are relaxing by the pool, they can see exactly where the kids are when they grab an ice cream or head to watch the acrobats in the piazza.

Tip: While you might be tempted to have kids leave their phones at home, bringing them onboard means that children can also see where their parents are. Remember to have everyone turn off their cell service when they board, switch to airplane mode, and click the ship’s Wi-Fi to avoid extra charges.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises don’t have the water slides you see on other ships. But there is still plenty for children to do both day and night to get a little time away from their parents. Ages 3 to 17 have youth programs broken up by age, and participation is included in the price of the cruise. On the Sky Princess, the breakdown was:

  • The Treehouse – ages 3 to 7
  • The Lodge – ages 8 to 12
  • The Beach House – ages 13 to 17

With separate rooms to gather in, the kids’ programs are open all day while at sea (with breaks for lunch and dinner) and for select hours while at port. When parents want a little alone time at night, evening babysitting is offered in the youth areas until 1 am for children 3 to 12 for an additional charge. For the teenagers, The Beach House is open for them to watch movies, make mocktails, or hang out until 1 am with no extra charge.

In addition to hanging out at the clubs, the youth programs also host fun family fairs and dance parties around the ship for the entire family.

Don’t be surprised if your child wants to spend every minute at Camp Discovery. Our 14-year-old tends to be shy but was in the teen club every day and night and made friends from different parts of the United States and several different countries. The programming was varied and kept her entertained enough as a teen that we never heard the dreaded “bored” word.

Tip: All children must be registered to attend the onboard kids’ clubs. Go to your account on the Princess website to register your child before you leave for your vacation. But if you forget, don’t worry. There’s an open house on the afternoon of embarkment so the family can meet the counselors. Registration is also available at that time.

Princess Cruises Shore Excursions

Mural of Mexican inspirations in foreground. Background is Sky Princess cruise ship in waters of Costa Maya, Mexico.
Marcea Cazel

A great thing about taking a cruise is visiting different locations. Every ship has a list of excursions you can take to explore the local areas at each port. While you can stay on the ship when it docks, it’s more fun and helps pass the time to get off and get a lay of the land. Excursions allow families to do that with a guide they can trust.

We took excursions in Cozumel, Roatán, and Belize City for this trip. When booking excursions, be sure to check carefully because some of them have age and endurance limits. Our goal as a family was to have some educational element in each of the visits, and they didn’t disappoint:

  • In Cozumel, Mexico, we took a small group visit to a reef restoration program. After a quick boat ride from the dock, we went into a classroom where we learned how the reefs of Mexico were deteriorating and how restoring them helps bring back aquatic wildlife to help the ecosystem. Afterward, we walked the rocky beach area, where we learned about mangroves and how they protect the shores during storms. Our guide helped us plant some mangrove seeds, and then it was off to snorkel to see some of the reefs the program has worked on. With this excursion, not only are you helping the reefs by learning, but the cruise lines that offer the trip also donate a portion of the cost of the tour directly to the restoration group.
  • While in Roatán, Honduras, we took a 15-min boat ride to an animal sanctuary island. There we got a guided tour of the historic center that told of the indigenous people who originally lived in Honduras, along with a look at the animals on the island. None of the animals could be released back into the wild, so it was a unique way to get to see some of the animals of Honduras. The tour included a traditional Honduras lunch and a pool, bar, and beach area to relax for a few hours until we returned to the ship.
  • Heading to the Mayan ruins located 70 miles from Belize City, Belize was an adventure! A 2-hour bus ride took us to the Xunantucnich site where ancient Mayans lived and ruled. Located only a few miles from the Guatemalan border, the site has several pyramids that archaeologists have excavated and continue to find artifacts. The guides on this tour gave us a lot of history on the cultures of the Belizean people, including the history of Mayans, the foods of the land, and the Belize connection to England. After a walking tour of the site and climbing one of the pyramids, we went to a local restaurant to enjoy a traditional meal of chicken, rice, and beans and a cold Coca-Cola made with cane sugar.

For families, we suggest deciding as a family what excursions to take. It’s a great way to ensure the children are more excited about going. The teen in our group was the only child of any age in two of our excursions. But since she had selected those trips, there were never any complaints about boredom or not having anyone to talk to during the excursions.

Tip: Book your excursions with the cruise line, and do it as soon they’re available. The best tours sell out before embarkation. And if you book with the ship and the excursion comes back late, they’ll hold the ship for you. If you book on your own and it’s late coming back, the cruise will leave you behind!

Dining and Beverages to Enjoy Onboard Princess Cruises

The main thing most people talk about when the word ‘cruise’ is mentioned is the food. Princess ships have multiple places to eat and snack 24 hours a day. There are also numerous bars to get drinks for adults and little ones. And on the Sky Princess, the food did not disappoint.

All of the Princess ships have a buffet, pizza, ice cream, snack areas, and main dining rooms (MDR) that are included in the price of the cruise. There are also specialty restaurants that have additional costs. For the MDRs, passengers can either make reservations for specific times each day or walk up and be seated where available. MDRs are great for people who enjoy the way cruising used to be and can be seated with those they don’t know. Make a reservation if you’re looking for a private table in an MDR.

Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and snacks and located on the Lido Deck/16, the World Fresh Marketplace buffet has something to eat for everyone in the family. Menus follow holidays and the menus of ports visited on the trip but also have traditional menu items. Passengers can also head to the International Cafe, located on the Plaza Deck/5, 24 hours a day for quick bites of sandwiches and snacks all day.

Specialty restaurants vary by ship. The Sky Princess offers the French-inspired Bistro Sur La Mer, Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, and the Crown Grill steakhouse. Our group enjoyed a meal in each of these restaurants, and the service and food quality were excellent. If you want to eat in a specialty restaurant and catch a show, try to do them on different days or eat as soon as the specialty restaurant opens. Service is high-end and can take 2 hours or more, depending on your group size.

Beverage Packages on Princess Cruises

Marcea Cazel

Onboard Princess Cruises, juice at breakfast, brewed coffee, non-bottled water, and iced tea are complimentary.

For other drinks, passengers can purchase drinks as they go or get one of Princess’s four drink packages. The Plus drink package covers water, specialty coffee, juice, tea, soda, smoothies, and non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks that cost up to $15. The Premier drink package covers all of those items up to $20. The Zero Alcohol package covers specialty coffee drinks, tea, smoothies, sodas, energy drinks, water, and mocktails, while the Classic Soda Package includes sodas, juice, mocktails, and smoothies. Drink packages cannot be shared and only apply to the person who purchases them

Tip: Passengers can book a standard fare or a Princess Plus fare. The standard fare includes the room’s cost, while the Princess Plus fare includes the room, the Plus drink package, wi-fi, and crew appreciation. While you can book a drink package at any time leading up to the cruise, if you’re going to get a package that includes alcohol, you’ll see a significant discount when booking a Princess Plus fare than if you booked a standard fare and the Plus drink package at a later time.

Fun Family Activities on Princess Cruises

Marcea Cazel

There’s no need to worry about how families can spend time together on a Princess Cruise. The Sky Princess offered trivia nights, pool games, pickleball, basketball, and a miniature golf putting green.

There are also Movies Under The Stars around the main pool where the large screen is located. While the ship shows movies during the day, Movies Under the Stars means the loungers get padded covers and popcorn for everyone. Movies shown around the pool are rated PG-13 and under. And don’t worry if you miss the movie of the night. The movie is available on your stateroom television the day afterward.

Top-rated shows also take place at night in the Princess Theater. From Broadway-type shows to comedians to jugglers, there’s a little bit of everything during two shows a night.

Tip: Look at the JourneyView portion of the app within a few days of sailing. All activities are listed, including show days. This will make it easier to plan your days and ensure you don’t miss anything. Shows happen every night but often aren’t repeated. You’ll also receive a printed overview of the next day each night in your cabin.

Adult-Only Locations to Relax

Even on a family vacation, adults need a little alone time. And sometimes the areas around the main pools can get noisy and crowded. Not to worry—there are several places onboard a Princess Cruise to get some quiet time.

On the Sky Princess, there was an adult-only pool and bar located towards the front of the ship on the Sun Deck/17. Called The Retreat Pool, there are no reservations required, and it is free to enter. The area also has an adults-only bar, along with loungers and chairs that surround the pool. You’ll hear a little of the music coming from the main pool area, but not enough to distract or irritate.

Marcea Cazel

The Sky Deck/18 is home to The Sanctuary. A private area with padded loungers, cabanas, and hot tubs, use of The Sanctuary’s loungers is $40 per day or $20 for a half day. Cabanas cost extra. Included are beverages and light snacks delivered by stewards who walk around and attend to your every need. On the Sky Princess, The Sanctuary is the only location, excluding the bridge, where you can get a view over the ship’s bow.

Those in need of even more relaxation can head to the Lotus Spa®. Specialists provide massages, hair services, pedicures/manicures, facials, and other body treatments. If you don’t schedule a treatment in the Lotus Spa, consider booking time at The Enclave. Located inside the spa, The Enclave is a thermal spa area with multiple saunas, heated tile beds, a hydro-therapy pool, and different temperature refreshing showers. Passes to The Enclave can be purchased by the day or for the entire cruise.

Tip: Schedule your boarding time as early as possible to experience The Sanctuary and The Enclave. The only way to reserve space is when you’re on board, and those spots fill quickly. Most Princess repeat cruisers head directly to each location once they’re on the ship to try to get a reservation.

Avoid a hefty cellphone bill, maximize your kids club time, and get the excursions you want on your next family cruise

Taking a cruise seems like an easy vacation, right? Pack your stuff, get on a ship, and let the fun come to you. While we’d love to tell you this is all there is to it, in reality, there are variables that’ll make or break your entire trip. We’ve gathered a few cruise tips and tricks that will take your vacation from good to unforgettable (show times matter), so before you pack it up and head to the open seas, double-check our list that’ll have you prepped and ready to sail with your crew.

Cruise Tip 1: Do your research.

knowing all the cruise tips and tricks are important.
Gabby Cullen

Your kids’ age will play a role in which cruise you decide to book. Cruise lines offer different amenities, so look at companies and packages before booking your trip. For example, Disney Cruise Line is one of the best for families with kids ages ten and under, while Royal Caribbean has fun and entertainment that tends to be more appealing for teens and young adults. Holland America Line offers loads of local information and learning opportunities so that you really get to know the area you are visiting.

Cruise Tip 2: Book your excursions in advance.

This is part of the research, but it’s just as important. Decide which excursions are appropriate for your kids’ ages and book them before you get on the ship. If you wait until you arrive at a port town, the tours, water sports, and other adventures are often completely booked.

Cruise Tip 3: Pay attention to dining and show times when booking your cruise.

This is important to consider when cruising with kids. Do your kids need to eat early? Are they good with a kiddie dinner and evening at the kids club? Do you want to eat and then see a show as a family? These are all questions you’ll need to ask yourself (and your kids) before you book your dinner time.

Cruise Tip 4: Arrive at your disembarkation port a day early (at least).

cruise tips and tricks like arriving at port early are important.

Getting off an airplane and on a cruise ship on the same day can be incredibly stressful. If possible, arrange to arrive a day ahead of time. That way, you’ll be calm and ready to go when it’s time to board the ship.

Cruise Tip 5: Pack a carry-on bag for embarkment day.

Your luggage will be taken on board ahead of you and dropped off at your stateroom, but you might not have access to it for several hours. Pack your carry-on accordingly; swimsuits, snacks, sunscreen, diapers, and a change of clothes.

Cruise Tip 6: Download the cruise app.

This will give you tons of important information: what restaurants are open, which shows are playing and when, when activities are happening, and what you need to know when you get on and off the ship at a port. Usually, this is also where you can add your credit card information, view your cruise folio via the app and sign up for excursions and events that come with extra charges,

Cruise Tip 7: Use the kids club (a lot).

an important cruise tip and trick is to use the kids club all the time.

Most cruise ships have great kids’ club that stays open late. Your kids will be under constant supervision and constantly entertained with games, challenges, arts and crafts, and more. Some cruise line kids’ clubs will even escort your child to and from dinner for you.

Cruise Tip 8: Check the dress code.

Some cruise lines require upscale dress codes for certain nights. Some dress codes vary by night and dining location.

Related: 7 Reasons an UnCruise Is Just the Off-Grid Adventure Your Family Needs

Cruise Tip 9: Find out where the food is.

The onboard restaurants open and close at various times of the day, but there is always something to eat if your family is hungry. And, if you can’t find something, head back to your stateroom for room service. Many cruise lines offer a 24-hour service.

Cruise tip 10: Consider the tight living arrangements.

Unless you’re splurging on a suite, you’ll likely have a family stateroom, which isn’t usually very roomy. You’ll have to fit everyone, and the luggage, in this small space, so talk about being respectful and staying tidy before you go. You might also consider bringing storage organizers like an over-the-door shoe hanger or packing cubes with outfits already picked out, so you can store the suitcases for the duration of your trip. This is a situation where the answer to the never-ending vacation question of “to unpack or not unpack” is to unpack.

Cruise Tip 11: Keep your phone on airplane mode.

There’s nothing worse than coming home from a cruise to a massive cellphone bill. Whether you plan to use the ship’s WiFi or not, as soon as you get onboard, put your cellphone in airplane mode. This way you won’t accidentally start roaming while at sea. This can be a very expensive lesson to learn.

Cruise Tip 12: Save room in your suitcase and get the laundry service.

If your ship offers a laundry service, it can really be a space saver for your luggage. Usually, there’s a 24-hour turnaround and everything comes back fresh and folded. On a recent one-week Holland America Line cruise, this service cost $49 for the entire week. Very reasonable!

Cruise Tip 13: Make note of the embarkation times.

Don’t be those people you can see all over YouTube literally RUNNING for their cruise ship as it takes off from the dock. Embarkation times are not a suggestion. Make sure you allow plenty of time to return to the ship on port days.

Ready for some family adventures? Now is the perfect time to book a small-ship cruise with UnCruise and get those teens and tweens off their devices and out into nature. We spent a day experiencing how UnCruise works and can’t wait for you to check them out for yourself. Here are all the reasons why it just might be the perfect option for your family.

This is article is sponsored by UnCruise. Join the leading adventure cruise line, offering 7-to-14-night cruises to remote locations and featuring high-end cuisine as well as family, solo, and group adventures. UnCruise further provides adventures from Alaska to Cartagena with wildlife, daily activities and all-inclusive options to travel better and more sustainably. Explore the world with UnCruise Adventures, whose small ships offer a more intimate experience than their larger ships and their small footprint leaves you feeling good about traveling with them. It’s time to think bigger by cruising small!

UnCruise

1. UnCruise is all about the small ship life and that means your family will get the personalized experience that you are looking for. Ships range from 22-86 guests—that’s it! Gone are the massive buffet lines, lengthy port check-in procedures and the crowds at the swimming pool. By the end of your adventure, you and the crew will feel like family.

2. It’s about the adventures, not the ports. While typical cruises focus on the ports that you’ll be visiting and activities you can do there (for an extra charge), UnCruise focuses on experiencing nature. Instead of stopping in a tourist spot for shopping, you’ll be kayaking off the back of the ship to check out all the wildlife that an area offers.

3. Kids are included in the activities, not sent off to kids club. Kids ages 8 and up are welcome to go on an UnCruise and they are part of everything right from the start. If there are a bunch of kids on a certain excursion, often the crew will organize activities tailored to their interests. But kids are typically included just like others on the expedition and we love that!

UnCruise

4. You’ll really get to know the location you are visiting as you won’t be spending time traveling from port to port. UnCruise excursions average around 300 miles of travel for a week-long adventure and larger ships typically travel over 1,000 miles during that same time period. Whether you choose to explore the Alaska fjords and glaciers or the wonders of Costa Rica and Panama, you will be spending very little time traveling from port to port and that means more time for experiences you won’t soon forget.

5. Every day on an UnCruise expedition is full of adventure. All ships carry expedition teams that plan out the activities. The typical schedule has you choosing a morning and an afternoon activity that may include snorkeling, kayaking, hiking through the rainforest or whale watching among other options. There’s something for every activity level and all activities are included in your cruise price (no extra excursion costs).

6. Forget what you know about cruise food. UnCruise offers a true field-to-table dining experience by partnering with local farmers and producers in the areas they visit to get the freshest sustainable seafood, and local fruits and veggies. Meals are casual (no need to dress up!) and they can handle all dietary needs. Just wait ’til you try the fresh-baked pastries each morning—you’ll be blown away by what can be created in the small galley kitchen! And, it’s open bar so you don’t need to worry about your bar charges at the end of your trip.

UnCruise

7. An UnCruise Adventure is truly unplugged. There’s no WiFi onboard so unless you nab a signal while close to shore, your family will get to unplug and fully experience the wonder of the outdoors. We think this is perfect for the always-connected teen set (and parents too!).

Ready to book your UnCruise Adventure? Head to their website to find the UnCruise that’s best for your family.

Carnival Cruise Line recently became the first line of its kind to earn a “sensory inclusive” certification!

The nonprofit KultureCity awarded the first certification in October, with all of the line’s South Florida-based ships following. According to a press release, Carnival plans to certify the rest of its fleet by March 2020.

Vicky Rey, Carnival’s vice president of guest care and communications and the company’s ADA Responsibility Officer, said in a press statement, “Carnival Cruise Line and KultureCity share a heartfelt commitment to acceptance and inclusivity. Working together, all of our guests can maximize their enjoyment and be the truest versions of themselves during their time on board.”

Along with comprehensive staff training on sensory and other needs relating to autism, ADHD, PTSD and Down syndrome, Carnival Cruise Line will also equip its certified ships with KultureCity sensory bags—each of which contains a variety of calming items, such as noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys and a visual feeling thermometer.

photo: Kellie Klumb via Unsplash

Dr. Julian Maha, co-founder, KultureCity, said of the collab and certification, “We’re proud and grateful to partner with Carnival Cruise Line, offering guests with sensory needs an opportunity to more fully enjoy their vacations and create wonderful memories with their friends, families and loved ones. We appreciate Carnival Cruise Line for taking this important step in making their vacations accessible to everyone.”

Carnival didn’t stop at a sensory inclusive certification, either. The cruise line is also the first operator to complete an additional special needs certification program. The program, offered by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, includes 17 continuing education credits of training in subjects such as autism, Down syndrome, mobility issues and other special needs.

The certification, bags and other upgrades are getting plenty of well-deserved attention. Renowned autism advocate and author Dr. Temple Grandin recently said of Carnival’s latest efforts, “Carnival Cruise Line is to be commended for training their staff about autism and offering sensory bags that will enable individuals with autism and their families to have an enjoyable cruise.”
