Vintage is the name of the game at these old-school Atlanta bowling alleys

Don’t get us wrong, winter in Atlanta is tons of fun. Who doesn’t love snow tubing and sledding when the snow flies. Or heading out for a day of skiing? There’s lots of love about the cooler months. But sometimes it doesn’t hurt to duck inside when the temperatures are still chilly. So we found all the indoor bowling fun you need to get out and have family fun together. There’s nothing quite like watching your child bowl their first strike at a bowling alley near Atlanta. So, pack up your family and head to these Atlanta bowling alleys to turn back the clock on entertainment. Each spot is family-friendly and goes beyond bowling with everything from laser tag to epic arcade games. Consider this the perfect rainy day line-up of family-friendly bowling alleys in the city.

1. Midtown Bowl

An Atlanta tradition since 1960, get your game on with 32 lanes at this classic Atlanta bowling alley. Stepping inside, you’re welcomed by the charm of a 1970’s colorful, retro-chic bowling alley with lane tables that sit up to six and a jukebox. Jukebox lessons with your kids are always fun since they’ve probably never tried one.

Beyond Bowling: This vintage bowling alley focuses on the main event, but the food is an excellent distraction. For kids, they’ve got everything from fish sticks to corn dogs, and big kids will love the signature burgers. Check out the vegan and vegetarian menus, too.

Insider Tip: Midtown Bowl is a cash-free business.

Be sure to visit this Atlanta bowling alley that offers upscale bowling before 5 p.m. when kids are allowed. It is nothing short of amazing. Thankfully, each duckpin bowling alley and seating area is sparkling clean, and the tableside service makes bowling with kids much more manageable. You’ll get three rolls per turn with duckpins, and the smaller balls are great for little hands.

Beyond Bowling: The Painted Duck has many fun games besides bowling, and the menu offers excellent food and cocktails far from typical bowling alley fare. The Duck Phat Fries and Duck Nuggets are the perfect options to start. Then, go all in and order the Whole Peking Duck. After dinner, take a walk around and pick one of the vintage games to play, like Horseshoes or Toad Hole.

Insider Tip: You are limited to two lanes and two hours of bowling. Valet parking ($3 plus gratuity) is available onsite.

There’s an arcade game around every corner and family-friendly food for your crew.

Then you can get crazy with the sides, which include sauces like tahini and tzatziki, veggies, hummus, etc. Everything is super fresh and the workers are very helpful in explaining everything. Kids will love the beef gyro or chicken shawarma, and watching the workers carve them off the vertical rotisseries.

FOB Kitchen

FOB Kitchen
Corey B via Yelp

This longtime beloved San Francisco pop-up has made a permanent home in Oakland, so now you can more easily get to their version of homey Filipino cuisine. The Shanghai lumpia (pork spring rolls), lechon (pork belly) and adobo fried rice are big favorites, while the homemade spam with rice and fried egg will be a hit with the kiddies. Don’t skip the macapono (young coconut) ice cream for dessert if it’s on the menu! FOB Kitchen is open for brunch on weekends only, the best time to take the family.

PLAJ

Scandinavian cuisine is particularly family-friendly and we love the homey atmosphere that you find at Pläj. Located within walking distance of the Civic Center, Pläj is a great spot for your pre- or post-theater meal when everyone's all dressed up. We love the smoked fish croquettes and chicken liver more, while kids will definitely want to dig in to the Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam. On Sundays in December you can enjoy their traditional julbord meal. If you head up to Petaluma, don't miss their more casual sister restaurant, Stockhome (their Swedish candy selection is epic!).

Cafe Zoetroppe

Kate Loweth

Named for Francis Coppola's venerable production company, American Zoetrope, Cafe Zoetrope is located in the majestic Sentinel Building, a San Francisco historic landmark in the heart of North Beach. We love it for it's quirky decor, small tables and totally kid-friendly dining. You can't go wrong with the Pizza Sofia (topped with arugula, prosciutto and shaved parmesan) and the spaghetti and meatballs will make any kid (or adult) both full and happy.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Nestlé Prepared Foods is recalling approximately 92,206 pounds of LEAN CUISINE Baked Chicken meal products. The items may be contaminated with extraneous materials––in particular, pieces of white hard plastic.

The recalled product is the 8 5/8-oz. carton trays of LEAN CUISINE Baked Chicken, white meat chicken with stuffing, red skin mashed potatoes and gravy, with a lot code of 0246595911 and “Best Before” date of October 2021. They were produced and packaged on Sept. 2, 2020.

Photo: USDA FSIS

The recalled products have establishment number “EST. P-9018” on the side of the case near the lot number. The issue was discovered on Dec. 18, 2020 after receiving five consumer complaints involving hard white plastic found in the product. It is believed the mashed potatoes had pieces of a plastic conveyor belt that broke during production.

There have been no reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products, but FSIS is concerned that consumers may still have some of the affected meals in their freezers. If you have any of the products, do not consume and either throw them away or return to the place of purchase for a refund.

If you have questions, you can contact Nestlé Prepared Foods, at (800) 993-8625.

Petit Trois – Sherman Oaks

Laurie W. via Yelp

Who says you can’t bring your famished family for a bit of fine dining at a French bistro with a classically trained chef at its helm? While you munch on escargot and chicken liver mousse, kids can choose from a few more simplified options from “les enfants” menu like buttered pasta or a basic omelet. This bright and sunny establishment is a delight for any foodie which is why accommodating the younger set truly makes Petit Trois quite the tour de force.
Know before you go: If you’re not sure if the kids can handle dinner here, come for breakfast where their delicious selection of pastries will win over the pickiest of palettes.

Birdie G’s – Santa Monica

Michael U. via Yelp

You won’t find a minimalist menu here. The owner of Birdie G’s (same guy behind the revered Rustic Canyon) feels the dining options should be expansive and comforting so there is a little bit for everyone. And boy is there! Not only does the adult dinner menu have tons of variety, the separate kids' menu is also one of the most interesting we’ve seen! From homemade matzo ball soup and potato crusted chicken fingers to fresh pasta and the "sloppy Jeremy," this westside hotspot takes the whole fam into consideration and is sure to delight diners of all ages.
Know before you go: Forgot to bring something along to entertain your small ones? Not to worry as the fine folks at Birdie G's hands out crayons and wax sticks to keep 'em busy.

Pace – Hollywood Hills

Sherri L. via Yelp

Romantic? Check. Classy? Check. Bring the kids? Check. With butcher paper on the tables and jars full of crayons scattered everywhere, this tucked-away gem will keep your tiny tasters happily entertained for most of your meal. There may not be a designated “kids meal” per se, but the very friendly waiters will be more than happy to help accommodate off-menu modifications.
Know before you go: It’s best to make an early reservation here as crowds will be minimal and you’ll be able to get the littles to bed at a reasonable time.

Kitchen Mouse- Highland Park

Jon T. via Yelp

Snuggled into the heart of Highland Park is a breakfast/lunch cafe that has locals going gaga over the vegan/vegetarian dishes that leave even meat-eaters happily satisfied! This adorable place has a reasonably priced menu that features a handful of kids' options, as well as ala carte side dishes providing the littles even more of a variety. Squirmy toddler? Show them the small but stocked play area in the corner of the cafe so you can sip your coffee stress-free.
Know before you go: If you don't have time to sit and eat, head to Topo, their sister deli and market next door. Here you can grab-and-go tons of premade vegan dishes or stand-alone ingredients for an at-home nosh fest.

Button Mash – Echo Park

Paul I. via Yelp

Who doesn't love an arcade (especially when you combine one with a restaurant)? Button Mash serves up old school arcade & pinball games (think Pac Man and Frogger) alongside delicious Vietnamese fusion cuisine that has something for all eaters!  Order your gamers the cheeseburger & fries, the gourmet mac & cheese, or some plain ramen noodles before turning them loose on Donkey Kong. This super trendy spot is open to kids of all ages but perhaps better suited to those who have mastered their hand/eye coordination and can reach the controls.
Know before you go: It's probably best to take the family here for an early dinner since this place becomes more of a bar scene after 9pm.

The Proud Bird - Westchester

The Proud Bird via Yelp

This 53-year-old iconic restaurant underwent a massive facelift a few years back and transformed itself into a reimagined high-end food bazaar featuring 6 open-air kitchens all highlighting different types of cuisine. Don't let the sleek design and modern lounge feel put you off though. This place is great for the entire family with its life-size replicas of fighter planes everywhere you look and, with the location of this spot basically at the beginning of the runway, everyone gets a front-row view of actual planes landing at LAX airport. Grab a seat on the outside dining patio and watch your pint-sized pilots burn off steam playing on the newly constructed playground.
Know before you go: Each food stall doesn't have separate kids menus but there are options at most of them that work just fine for your hungry hippos. Try the Italian stand's plain cheese pizza, the mac & cheese side from Bludso's BBQ (to die for), or the fried rice at the Asian Wok.

Highland Park Bowl - Highland Park

Debra B. via Yelp

Steeped in history, Highland Park Bowl is LA's oldest bowling area, with its origins dating back to the roaring twenties in the middle of Prohibition. Many of the original features and accessories have been preserved which adds to the super cool feel (and attracts the hipsters in droves). Bowl a couple lanes then grab some straight-up cheese pizza for those less daring and the pancetta, egg and black kale pizza for the more adventurous diners. The menu here is upscale Italian but still has family faves like meatballs, sweet potato fries, and Italian sausage.
Know before you go: Because an outing to Highland Park Bowl comes with a bit of a higher price tag than your neighborhood lanes, plan to go Saturdays from 11am - 4pm for lower lane fees and order a pizza to share for lunch.

The Front Porch - Redondo Beach

Matt S. via Yelp

The newest addition to the Redondo Beach Pier, The Front Porch boasts killer harbor views, delicious coastal cuisine, and gorgeous sunsets if the timing is just right. The owners/chefs are parents to small children themselves so they have truly gone to convenient lengths to make this place the epitome of kid-friendly dining without compromising quality. The kids' menu features items like grilled cheese, house-made chicken fingers, mac & cheese, and even fish sticks! They also have chalk on hand for your little landlubbers to draw on the boardwalk as well as some toys/games to borrow in case you leave yours at home.
Know before you go: Mondays kids eat for $1 with purchase of an adult entree which kinda seems like the ultimate win/win!

Themed Restaurants Every Family Needs to Visit

Where to Find the Best Pizza in LA

You probably already believe in living an eco-conscious and sustainable life each and every day, and your wedding day should be no exception. Planning an eco-friendly wedding is a lot easier than you may think! There are many sustainable wedding ideas out there, with more eco-friendly wedding decorations available and greener options when it comes to catering, invitations, and finding your perfect dress. Here are 5 easy tips from Verte Luxe CEO, Laura Frecon that will help you have the sustainable wedding of your dreams so you can say “I do,” with a clear conscience.

1. Repurpose and Achieve a One-Of-A-Kind Look

For most of us, our gowns will only be worn this one time. That’s why it’s great to consider repurposing a gown by hiring a good seamstress to re-make an existing gown and creating your own design. You will be reusing existing materials and creating a one-of-a-kind gown that is your very own. Also, look to eco-friendly wedding gown designers like Celia Grace and Lindee Daniel. These designers are using sustainable materials and fair trade practices.

2. Donate Decor and Leftovers

Think about donating your flowers and leftover food after the event. You can search for venues that support local farm-to-table cuisine and donate to a food bank when the wedding is over. There are amazing floral companies such as Rebloom, who take your wedding flowers and repurpose them by donating to hospitals and nursing homes or reselling them at a lower cost to other events.

3. Send Out Eco-Friendly Invitations

Print invitations, programs, and menus on seed paper. Seed paper is a biodegradable material that sprouts into flowers when planted in soil. Botanical PaperWorks has a whole line of custom goods on plantable paper so it’s perfect for your wedding and garden.

4. Use Nature as Your Decor

For decor, use the beauty that surrounds you when designing the look of your wedding. Consider an outdoor venue that will cut back on energy costs by saving the need for lighting. Look to local farms for your flowers and use the scenery that surrounds you rather than bringing in excessive decor. Work with sustainable event planners and designers in your area and always go local with your food, wine, and flowers to cut back on your carbon footprint.

5. Pick an Eco-Friendly Registry

Register for items that will support your mission and keep sustainability a priority. As your guests browse through the registry they may even become inspired to make a lifestyle change!
