10 Baby Shower Games Your Friends Will Love

It’s July, which means your kids are probably staying up well past their average bedtimes because, really, who wants to go to bed when it’s still daylight outside? If you’re looking for the perfect way to knock out that end-of-day energy burst, then catching fireflies is your beacon to bedtime bliss. From wooded paths to tall grass, along with ponds and in bushes, fireflies are lighting the way to some serious summertime memories. Here’s where to look for these little bioluminescent beetles in Atlanta.

Piedmont Park

Since fireflies rely on their blinking lights to communicate with one another, areas with lots of light pollution have far fewer insects because they can't as easily make plans with one another. But, thanks to Piedmont Park's 189 acres, it's a haven in the hullabaloo of our modern city. Whether you look for them in the Northwoods across from the Atlanta Botanical Garden, or stay late at one of the park's two playgrounds, you've got a very good chance at seeing some lighting bugs lighting up.

Murphey Candler Park

This 135-acre multi-use park is the largest park in the City of Brookhaven, but thanks to its miles of nature trails and preserved wetlands, it's a great spot to see the lightning bugs come out at night. You don't have to veer too far off the path (or away from the parking lot, for that matter) to witness the twinkling lights of your favorite luminary insects. For your best show, steer clear of the sports fields and head towards the wooded area and trails near the lake. Lightning bugs don't like the chemicals that are used to make each multi-use field so green and weed-free.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a 2,965 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. You'll find fields with taller grass that are perfect for lightning bugs to levitate from, and the wooded trails that circle the mountain are crawling with the critters.

Allatoona Creek Park

Among Allatoona Creek Park's 1450 acres are large open fields, forest, and the shores of Lake Allatoona. Two creeks (Little Allatoona and Big Allatoona) merge as you near the lake, and the land is managed to accommodate all species of wildlife with archery hunting for deer allowed during the season. The park is open for public use except during hunting season, and among these acres, you can find an impressive showing of fireflies.

Fort Mountain State Park

Near the Cohutta Wilderness, this Georgia state park is a mecca for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders who come for the trails that wind through hardwood forest and blueberry thickets, crossing streams, and circling a pretty lake. There's even a mysterious 855-foot-long wall that's thought to have been built by early Indians as fortification against more hostile Indians or for ancient ceremonies. But the wall isn't the only ethereal thing about this park. The rare blue-ghost fireflies unique to the Appalachian mountain range can be found early in firefly season, but visitors should look and not catch these unique bugs.

If your little critters love all things animal,  Atlanta—and its world-class zoo, animal encounters, and aquarium—is a perfect place to walk on the wild side. Just fill up your gas tank, lug your vat of hand sanitizer to the car, and set your GPS to any of the following Georgia spots that are certain to inject some much-needed adrenaline into your kids’ wildlife encounters.

Wild Animal Safari

Air Rick via Yelp

Some experiences are just weird, while other experiences can be weird AND wonderful. A ride on the zebra-painted, windowless school bus through the piney terrain of central Georgia definitely falls into the latter category. Sure, it’s a little over an hour from Atlanta, but here’s how it’s wonderful: giraffes, longhorn, and deer (among other critters) run to greet your zebra bus because you get to hand feed them from your window. And after the 45-minute bus tour, you get to stroll through the petting zoo where llama, goats, and deer are equally pleased to see you. It’s a chance to get up close and personal with friendly animals in a safari-esque environment without the risk (they keep the predators locked up). It’s weird. It’s wonderful. It’s the Wild Animal Safari. Go.

North Georgia Wildlife Park

North Georgia Wildlife Park via Yelp

Part petting zoo, part animal conservation, and rescue facility, the North Georgia Zoo is a far cry from a traditional zoo. Where else can you experience a traditional working farm during the first part of your visit, and then relax with a 150-pound boa constrictor draped across your arms during the second half of your stay? Reptiles not your speed? You can opt for an encounter with a baby kangaroo, baby otter, or adolescent wolves (reared by a basset hound) instead. Still not impressed? Top your day off with a hayride out to the camel enclosure, where you’ll see water buffalo, yaks, and highlander cows along the way. And did we mention they have pony rides for the littles? You heard us. Better start looking for real estate in Cleveland, Georgia. You’re going to be there a lot.

Biscayne National Park Walk

Within sight of downtown Miami, yet worlds away, Biscayne is a watery wonderland that protects a rare combination of aquamarine waters, emerald islands, and fish-bejeweled coral reefs. Here too is evidence of 10,000 years of human history, from pirates and shipwrecks to pineapple farmers and presidents. Though most of the park is covered by water, a short 1/4-mile jetty trail is available at Convoy Point.

The Most Walkable Cities in the US (Even with a Stroller)

Close encounters with baby animals are always fun, but when a fawn starts following your toddler around it’s downright adorable, like in the viral video of NFL wide receiver Jarvis Landry’s daughter below.

Twitter user Jordan Zirm shared a video of Cleveland Browns player Landry’s daughter, Joy, making friends with a fawn and it’s easily one of the cutest things you’ve ever seen. Not only does the fawn approach Landry’s daughter and allow her to pet it, the fawn attempts to follow her home in perfect Disney princess fashion. The only thing missing is singing cartoon bird.

The best moment by far is when Joy nonchalantly asks if she can bring the fawn inside the house as if it’s no big deal. Speaking to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Landry explained that he was more afraid of the deer than his daughter was, “I went to the garage and when I came out of the garage they were already best friends.”

For those wondering what happened to the fawn, it apparently left, most likely to return to it’s mother. “If he comes back we’ll definitely give him a name for sure,” Landry said.
