Over the past few years Barbie has been taking on a whole new look––actually several new looks, including a wide range of body types, skin tones and hair styles. The new Barbie Fashionistas line for 2020 continues the trend of diversity and inclusion for one of the world’s most popular dolls.

The newest Barbie Fashionistas collection features a doll with the skin condition vitiligo, a doll with no hair, a doll with a darker skin tone that uses a gold prosthetic limb and Ken with long hair.

The Barbie design team worked closely with experts to ensure the accuracy of each doll. In 2019, they collaborated with then 12-year-old Jordan Reeves, who is working to build creative solutions that help kids with disabilities. They also consulted with a dermatologist to ensure vitiligo was properly represented.

Over the past five years Barbie has introduced more than 170 new looks in order to be more reflective of the world girls see around them. The effort to create a more diverse offering of Barbies has been a huge success. In 2019, over half of all dolls offered were diverse. Of the top ten Fashionista best sellers, seven were diverse, including the doll that uses a wheelchair.

The new Fashionistas collection will be released in two waves. The spring wave, which includes the doll with vitiligo and the Ken with rooted hair, is available now. The fall wave, which includes the doll with the prosthetic in a darker skin tone and the doll with no hair, will begin hitting store shelves in June. Several dolls from the previous line, including the doll with a wheelchair, are also being brought back for 2020 due to popular demand.

Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time to replenish your sunscreen stockpile. Before you hit the store, however, you’re going to want to see the results of a new study on the health risks of common sunscreen ingredients.

A new study published in JAMA and conducted by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research found that the blood concentration of four of the ingredients found in sunscreen continued to rise as daily use of the product continued. These ingredients were also found to remain in the body for at least 24 hours after using the sunscreen.

The study did not look at the health impact this absorption has if any, on users––only that it occurs. The study points to the need for more research on the impact of these specific ingredients once they are absorbed into the body.

Four ingredients were tested: avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule. Out of these, oxybenzone stood out above the rest with an absorption rate of “about 50 to 100 times higher concentration than any of these other three chemicals they tested,” according to David Andrews, a senior scientist at the EWG.

Previous studies have shown a potential link between oxybenzone and lower testosterone levels in adolescent boys and shorter pregnancies and disrupted birth weights in babies. Oxybenzone is also known to be one of the most common cause of contact allergies. The ingredient has also been banned in several parts of the world due to the fact that it can cause coral bleaching and pose a danger to marine life when it’s introduced into the ocean.

So does this mean you should stop using sunscreen? No. Instead, consumers should more vigilant about reading labels and researching the ingredients in the sunscreens they use. Check out our detailed list of sunscreens here, many of which contain safer ingredients.

The American Academy of Dermatology urges people to apply at least one ounce of sunscreen to all exposed skin every two hours or after swimming. In addition, you should always talk to a board-certified dermatologist if you are concerned about the safety of a sunscreen’s ingredients.

“Studies need to be performed to evaluate this finding and determine whether there are true medical implications to absorption of certain ingredients,” said Yale School of Medicine dermatologist Dr. David Leffell, a spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology. He added that in the meantime, people should “continue to be aggressive about sun protection.”

Is Spray Sunscreen Safe For Kids? Experts Weigh In

Apply Sunscreen to Even the Squirmiest Kids With These Life Hacks

Spring has arrived and summer is just around the corner, which means kids will be spending more time out in the sun. Now is the perfect time to restock your sunscreen stash, but before you go on that Target run, the question remains: is spray sunscreen safe for kids?

Every parent that has spent even a minute trying to rub sunscreen onto a squirmy toddler can see the value in spray sunscreen. It’s fast and easy, but is it really the best choice? Not always. Some sunscreen is better than none, but according to experts, when given the choice parents should opt for using lotion rather than aerosol sprays.

photo: bryan via Flickr

“A spray can seem really convenient because you can just spray and off you go,” Dr. Jean Moorjani, a pediatrician at Orlando Health’s Arnold Palmer Hospital For Children told POPSUGAR. “The tricky thing about the spray is the way it’s made. Aerosol versions are going to be thinner than lotion, so you don’t really know how much sun protection your child is getting because a lot of these sprays have to be administered all over. They’re known to miss spots, even though it seems like they get everything.”

There is also the chance that kids can end up inhaling the aerosol spray. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration recommends avoiding spraying sunscreen near the face. Dr. Albert Yan, a pediatric dermatologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Pediatric Dermatology says the best method is to spray the sunscreen in your hand and then rub it onto the skin.

The other problem with sprays is that people often don’t apply enough. The American Academy of Dermatology advises one ounce per use, which means a six-ounce bottle of spray sunscreen contains only six applications for one adult. As a general rule of thumb you should be able to see the sunscreen on your skin to know that you’re using enough.

When shopping for a sunscreen it’s also important to purchase one that offers the right type of protection. The AAD advises shoppers to look for labels marked “broad spectrum” and “water resistant” and to opt for sunscreens with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.

Apply Sunscreen to Even the Squirmiest Kids With These Life Hacks

As a mother of three young children, it’s next to impossible to find time for myself. On top of that, I’m a working parent, so “me time” requires some serious planninI’m a board-certified dermatologist specializing in medical, cosmetic, laser and surgical dermatology for adults and children. I founded my practice with one primary goal: to help all of my patients feel, look, and be spectacular in their own skin. As both a mother and a dermatologist, I stress how important it is to find time for yourself to take care of your skin and body, especially this time of year. The wintertime can wreak havoc on your skin, between the bitter cold weather outside and the blasting heat inside.

With five minutes or less to spare, here are some of my go-to winter skincare tips for moms:

  1. Always stay hydrated; drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  2. One shower a day is just enough; especially for parents of young children, finding the time to even get in one shower can be tough, but a 10-minute warm shower will do the trick. That said, although hot water may feel good, make sure the water isn’t too hot otherwise you can dry out your skin. Same goes for your little ones, one bath a day works just fine.
  3. Use a gentle body wash daily and exfoliate once a week at most if you feel the need to.
  4. Pat your skin dry leaving it a slightly damp; follow with a thick moisturizer which absorbs better when the skin is moist.
  5. In the morning, wash your face with gentle cleanser and follow with moisturizer or serum. I like creams with antioxidants or a vitamin C serum.
  6. Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ with zinc or titanium. Even in the winter, your skin needs sun protection. You may not realize, but just getting in and out of your car while running errands exposes you to sunlight.
  7. If you wear makeup daily, you can minimize your time getting ready in the morning by using a tinted moisturizer with SPF. It’s 3 steps in 1.
  8. At night, use a gentle cleanser to take off makeup and remove dirt and oil buildup.
  9. Over the counter or topical Rx retinol will help with fine lines, aging, tone and texture. 20-30 minutes after you wash your face, take a pea size amount and apply around your whole face. A little bit goes a long way! Apply remainder to the back of your hands to keep them looking young!
  10. If your skin is dry, moisturizers with ceramides will help keep your natural oils and repair your skin barrier.
  11. A good moisturizer with Lactic acid can help with dry, cracked feet/heels. Apply this routinely and by summer your feet will be ready for flip flop season.
  12. Throughout the winter, parents are quick to grab hand sanitizer at any sign of sickness or germs. Not so fast! Avoid alcohol based products as they’ll dry your skin right up.
  13. Cotton lined gloves are a savior for your skin in the winter. Your hands are one of the first places to show signs of aging, so pay extra attention to them. At night, moisturize your hands and apply gloves for extra absorption. Don’t have cotton lined gloves or the time to go get some? Cotton socks work just as well for this.
  14. Treat yourself to a monthly facial or an at home treatment mask or chemical peel.

Now that I have written this and the kids are in bed, I probably should take some of my own advice and treat myself to a nice facial treatment!

Pregnancy Skin Care: The Good, The Bad and The Downright Weird

Brandless Is Now Selling Safe Beauty Products and They’re All $3

Target Is Getting Its Very First Exclusive Fragrance Line

Oh Mama, you are glowing! Pregnancy brings along with it plenty of unexpected perks and annoyances based on your fluctuating hormones. Your skin and complexion are not safe from side effects from your growing belly. Settle in and join us for Pregnancy Skin 101. By the end of our time together, you will have a better handle on what exactly is going on with your skin lately.

Photo: Phallin Ooi via Flickr

You Really Are Glowing
Your blood vessels are working overtime during your entire pregnancy, sending blood and nutrients to keep your baby growing and to keep you safe. The best part of all this extra blood production? Your glowing complexion. Chances are, you need a bit less blush these days and you get compliments on your radiant skin, but this perk doesn’t happen to everyone. Don’t hate us if you’re not so lucky.

Your Chronic Skin Conditions Get Better – Or Not
With all of your fluctuating hormones, you might find that some of your chronic skin conditions go into remission, or at least get a bit better, when you’re expecting. Don’t be surprised if your psoriasis goes MIA during your pregnancy, for example. On the other hand, chronic skin conditions can get worse. Acne typically shows up in full force during pregnancy, as does eczema. Talk with your doctor if you are uncomfortable or noticing major changes.

An Itch You Can’t Scratch Enough
Many pregnant women complain of itchy skin. If your skin is itching more than usual, there are a few culprits that could be the cause of your discomfort. Stretching skin over your belly and other growing body areas can cause itching, as can dry skin caused by hormonal changes. Don’t leave home without your favorite lotion. You’ll be more comfortable the more moisturized you are. Don’t have a favorite cream? Check out the line of body butters from 100% Pure. Our fave is the coconut lime – it’s smells like vacation!

Image from Eugene Luchinin via Flickr

Stretch It Out
Listen, the stretch mark struggle is real. Some moms-to-be get minimal to no stretch marks, while others get many more. Stressed out about your stretch marks? Don’t be. Your body is making a baby, and skin is stretching a bit quicker than it is used to. While it can be a bit of a shot to our egos, stretch marks are just par for the course many times. If you would like to get into a daily routine of stretch mark prevention, consider a cream that can help improve your skin’s elasticity. We love Honest Co.’s Organic Belly Balm.

Color Changes
Women often find that their skin tones actually change during, and sometimes after, pregnancy. If you find that you have brown patches on your face, or even red spider veins on your cheeks, go ahead and chat with your doctor to see if there’s a treatment that will work with you and make you feel more confident.

Photo: Thomas Pompernigg via Flickr

Burn, Baby, Burn
Summer pregnancies require extra precautions to keep your skin safe from the sun. Mamas-to-be can burn much easier than normally due to extra sensitive skin. Lather up with your favorite sunscreen, and don’t forget your face and lips. You might also notice that you are burning from other skin irritants during these nine months. Common troublemakers for your newly sensitive skin are usually soap or detergent based; start using gentle versions of your favorites to see if that helps your reactions and discomfort. Unfortunately, your evening bubble bath might be doing more harm than good.

Random Bumps
Noticing extra skin under your armpits or neck? You are likely the happy new owner of hormone induced skin tags. While there’s nothing that you can do to prevent them or treat them, keep your doctor informed. Skin tags typically go away on their own after your baby arrives and hormones go back to normal. However, if you still have some tags after the fact, you can have them removed by a dermatologist quickly and painlessly.

If you haven’t realized it by now, no body part or function is safe from pregnancy bizarreness. When it comes to your skin, it’s a toss up – you might end up with that blissful glow, or you might end up with itchy stretch marks. Either way, you get a baby at the end of this journey. Stay strong and invest in some good lotion.

What surprised you about your pregnancy skin? Tell us in a Comment.
