Joshua Tree is one of our favorite national parks to visit with kiddos. Not only is it a short drive from San Diego, but it also has some of the best hiking trails around, stunning scenery, and stargazing that would make even Neil DeGrasse Tyson envious. If you want to camp out with family but aren’t really feeling the tent experience, AutoCamp Joshua Tree is the next best thing. Located just 10 min. outside the park, this is glamping at its finest. With 47 custom Airstream trailers and 8 rectangular units across 25 acres, this luxe oasis in the desert offers a comfortable and chic respite filled with amenities for those who don’t exactly want to “rough it” in the great outdoors. Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, Anza-Borrego Desert is one of our favorite places to visit for some out-of-this-world stargazing. But for all that star peeping, you’ll need a great place to stay and there’s nothing better than the vintage Airstream trailers at Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort. These luxurious trailers feature super comfortable beds for a solid night’s slumber, a shaded outdoor patio with a propane grill and fire pit, a fully stocked kitchen, access to the pools and gym, Big Horn Burgers and Shakes restaurant, and close proximity to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park less than a mile away.
If the idea of “roughing it” makes you cringe, the lakefront and floating cabins at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve may be much more your style. Lakefront cabins feature a fire ring that’s perfect for family cookouts and ghost stories, as well as pedal boats to use during your stay. The floating cabins also feature a pedal boat and a large front porch where you can kick back and take in the majestic views. Other cabin amenities include a kitchen, bathroom, barbecue grill, air conditioning and heating, TV, and Wi-Fi. When you’re done playing at the lake, there are two swimming pools on the property and a renovated playground.
Keep in Mind: Weekend reservations tend to go quickly, so don’t sleep on making plans!
Lions and rhinos and deer, oh my! If you can’t swing a trip to Africa, the Roar & Snore sleepover at the San Diego Safari Park may be the next best thing. Campers of all ages are invited to join an overnight tent-camping experience overlooking the East African savanna habitat inside the park. Activities include dinner, breakfast, and s’mores, as well as walking tours to observe the nighttime activities of wildlife and morning wildlife presentations. If you upgrade to a Supreme Roar & Snore Safari package, you get to experience the Flightline Safari zip line, a Night Vision Safari, and VIP viewing of wildlife ambassador encounters.
Skip the ocean waves sound machine at bedtime and trade it in for the real deal. Sleep over the ocean (literally) at the Crystal Pier Cottages in San Diego. Originally built in 1930, these charming Cape Cod-style cottages on the Crystal Pier include fully equipped kitchenettes, a separate bedroom and living room, private decks over the beach, and room to park one car. For safety, the property also features gated entry and night security.

Do you have secret dreams of sailing the world in a hot air balloon à la Around the World in 80 Days? Imagine arriving by train to the early morning image of nearly six hundred balloons magically lifting off into the sky. You'll pass by the hometown of Western hero Wyatt Earp and consider stopping off in Princeton Il, near Chicago, to check out the home of abolitionist Owen Lovejoy—it was a major stop on the Underground Railroad and is now a National Landmark Site. A grand total of 2,438 miles, for one amazing journey, phew!

With the price of flights at an all-time high, it seems like taking a road trip is much better bet—budget-wise (at least slightly right?!). Thankfully SoCal has plenty of epic vacation destinations that are just a drive away and while you might be familiar with these popular destinations, have you heard about the must-see quirky stops to take along the way? From downright wacky to pretty darn cool, these roadside attractions turn a pit-stop into a wild good time.
If you're heading out on the I-15 from SoCal towards the Las Vegas area, then a stop at EddieWorld is well worth it. Touted as California's largest gas station, you can fuel up and recharge with the lowest gas prices and 18 Tesla supercharging stations. Have a roaring good time when you stop to see the Cabazon dinosaurs before spending the weekend in Palm Springs or Joshua Tree. View over 50 dinosaurs, stroll through a cool museum and even climb inside the T. Rex. It's dino-tastic! Located just 22 miles north of San Diego, here you can enter a bootlegger's tunnel through the historic Cave Store and follow it down through the sandstone cliffs and into a sea cave. The story goes that the creator of The Wizard of Oz inspired the cave's names when he noticed that the opening looks like the Sunny Jim cartoon character. Tours are self-guided and take about 15 minutes to complete.

While Randy's plans worldwide doughnut domination, nothing beats stopping at the orginal. So the next time you're road-tripping through Los Angeles plan a pitstop off the 405 for a box of the now-iconic sweets.
Good to Know: The famed big donut that graces their roof is a California icon featured in plenty of TV shows and movies, like Arrested Development, Californication, and Iron Man 2. Their flagship location in Inglewood has been there for nearly 60 years and is home to the original giant 32-foot donut.
If you find yourself driving to the California Redwoods for vacation, this is a must-do road trip adventure! There are three opportunities in the area where driving through a tree is actually encouraged! The drive-thru trees are giant redwoods with holes big enough for motorists to drive through. Shrine Tree in Myers Flat, Chandelier Tree in Leggett, and Klamath Tree in Klamath all offer the opportunity to take your car where it’s never been before (just remember to fold in your side-view mirrors).
It's true—this roadside attraction is in fact, an alley, about 70 feet long and 15 feet high, covered in thousands (maybe millions) of wads of chewed gum. The alley's history is debated, but it's been around since at least the early '70s and is usually full of people taking selfies or contributing their own piece of gum. The bubblegum graffiti is located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo and can be described as one of the city's most popular, unofficial landmarks. So, feel free to extend your stop and pop into one of the many local shops or restaurants. There's even a classic sweet shop, SLO sweets, that sells, you guessed it, gumballs!

Pirate House, Newport Beach
When you’re driving down Marcus St. in Newport Beach, you really can’t miss this quirky gem on the corner of 35th and Marcus. Pirates of the Caribbean figures, a giant rooster and the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the things you’ll see. This is someone’s private residence, so you can’t go inside, but the owners are well aware that the home draws a lot of spectators.

Go out on a limb and visit Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch located along Route 66. It's literally a forest of bottle trees in the California desert. Even more, the best part is the musical sound the bottles make on a windy day.
Located in the town of Buellton, you’ll find Ostrichland a unique roadside stop that will engage everyone. Here you can visit with 100+ amazing ostriches and emus. Then, head on to downtown Solvang where this quirky Danish town has bakeries, restaurants and shops with many folks dressed in Danish costumes.
There are amazing National Parks in California just a short drive—and in one case, a boat ride—away from LA (plus we’re rounded up some cozy cabins to stay in case you want to extend your trip). From Joshua Tree to Yosemite National Park, there aren’t better places to lace up those hiking boots, get outside, and explore these national treasures provided by mother nature. Check out the list below and be prepared to be blown away by the bucket-worthy beauty just a few hours outside our door.
Know Before You Go: There are a variety of ways to access the parks for free. All fourth graders are eligible to receive the Every Kid Outdoors pass that give them (along with any kids under 16 and up to 3 adults) access to parks, historical structures and federal public lands for a full year, for free.
There is also the California State Library Parks Pass—a new program where you can “check out” a pass from the local library for a free vehicle day-use entry for one passenger vehicle up to nine people.
If you haven't been to Joshua Tree National Park yet, be prepared for a magical experience. Located just 2.5 hours east of LA, this beloved desert hotspot casts it spell on visitors every year as they enjoy world class hiking and rock climbing in a tranquil desert landscape filled with giant boulders and twisty, alien-like Joshua trees. For a full day of fun, plan to arrive early to snag parking and bring lots of water and sunscreen. Kiddos will love staying for the park’s mind-blowing sunsets and incredible stargazing later on.
Good to Know: Want to see the night sky in ways you've never seen before? Save-the-date for the 7th Annual Night Sky Festival taking place Sept. 23-24 at Joshua Tree National Park. Tickets go on sale in early Jun.
Airbnb Nearby: The Joshua Tree National Park entrance is only a 15 min. drive from this family-friendly oasis in the desert. With 3 bedrooms (one of which has two single beds), there’s plenty of room for the whole brood to spread out and relax. The backyard is perfect for a BBQ and kiddos can soak in the starlit desert sky from the hot tub.
Channel Islands National Park is a 2-hour drive from LA and then a 1-3 hour ferry ride via Island Packers (the official boat Concessionaire for the Channel Islands National Park), departing regularly from Ventura and Channel Islands Harbors in Ventura and Oxnard, CA. A chain of five islands–Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara and San Miguel–make up this unspoiled, primitive destination that’s begging to be explored by adventurous families. All five are filled with breathtaking scenery, but Santa Cruz tends to be the most popular with family-friendly activities like whale watching, hiking and kayaking through mysterious sea caves. Be sure to bring plenty of food and water for your trip as there are no concessions available on any of the islands.
Airbnb Nearby: There are no Airbnbs on any of the Channel Islands, but camping is welcome. If you’re heading back to land after a day of long day exploration, this adorable house in downtown Santa Barbara is just the ticket. It sleeps up to six guests, offers a chef’s kitchen, a sunny backyard and is within walking distance of State Street’s vibrant eateries and shops.
Located in San Diego, Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the 1542 landing of the first European expedition to explore the west coast of the United States.
