But don’t expect a peaceable kingdom—life’s tough if you’re on the run, and Peter relies on his street smarts to survive. While technically not a movie, this mini-series and the latest installment in this modern Christmas franchise finds Santa hanging up his red hat, shaving off his pearly white beard, and retiring. His retirement is short-lived, though, when he realizes he may have hired the wrong replacement and endangered not only his elves but the whole holiday.
Kevin Bacon appears in this hilarious and festive holiday special from Marvel Studios: the Guardians take a trip to Earth to find a Christmas gift for Quill. Parents should keep in mind that the original film was rated PG-13, and while the holiday special has not yet been rated, it may be best suited for older kids.

It’s perfect for kids who crave a different kind of Christmas movie—and those old enough to enjoy the eerie effects.
Older kids will get a laugh watching Tim Allen (a divorced, uninvolved, turkey-burning dad) take a turn as Santa. The scenes at Santa’s workshop and the North Pole are amazing, but practice some Christmas caution: Allen gets the Santa gig because the original takes a fatal topple off a roof, there’s a lot of talk about divorce, and even a slightly scary scene with police.
There are a lot of versions of this story out there, but how many of them feature Michael Caine as Scrooge and the big-hearted Kermit as Bob Cratchit? Throw in all the fun musical numbers and Gonzo as the Charles Dickens narrator, and you’ve got a movie night to remember. Fair warning: his job is to scare Scrooge, so the Ghost of Christmas Future is pretty scary.

The beloved New York City holiday season is here! That means lots of festive light shows, Christmas displays, and decorations galore! Walk or drive through spectacular light sculptures, with miles of displays and millions of lights to marvel at. Whether you plan to travel to the light shows outside of the city, or stick to one of NYC’s classics—like Macy’s famous department store windows, botanical gardens and zoos, or, of course, Dyker Heights in Brooklyn—there’s something for everyone on this list of holiday lights in NYC in 2023.
This popular animal-themed light and lantern display returns to the zoo starting Nov. 17. See 360 lanterns representing almost 90 animal and plant species from around the globe. This year, 70 new lanterns representing 30 new animal species will make their debut at the zoo. Also new this year is an enhanced light show for dazzling photo-ops, a holiday tree show that features synchronized musical lights, and a walk through an animal-themed Light Tunnel for more light shows.
But the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is more than a display: activities and entertainment include ice-carving demonstrations, stilt-walkers, puppet shows, a holiday train. and even treats like s’mores.
This walk-through light experience debuted in 2020, and it’s back and bigger this season. Glow is billed as “an outdoor color and light experience," and has expanded its space to encompass even more of the NY Botanical Garden's grounds. Expect washes of brilliant color, thousands of dazzling LEDs, illuminated plant stories, ice-carving demonstrations, and whimsical, picture-perfect installations that reflect the surrounding gardens and collections. Smith Point Light Show
The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have one spectacular light show for you, located at the Smith Point County Park campground! Drive through one and a half miles of lights and light sculptures, featuring over 100 holiday displays (including five new ones), designed by the Girl Scouts themselves. This year, refreshments will be available to purchase at the show. Proceeds benefit programs for girls and families across Suffolk County, so you can enjoy the show and give back to the community all in one. Hudson Yards brings back the “Shine Bright” display for the season. The holiday décor includes over two million twinkling lights, or 115 miles of string lights! In the midst of it all is a 32-foot hot air balloon suspended inside The Shops at Hudson Yards. Plus: Every Day at 5 p.m., visitors can enjoy a light show synchronized to holiday music.
Saks puts on a huge light show every 10 minutes. Using LED lights and 3D projectors, a two-minute show plays out across the building’s 10-story facade. The music accompanying the light show is a medley saluting different holiday traditions, including José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad,” the theme from holiday film favorite Love Actually, Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas” and more.
The public lighting of the 82-foot tall, 14-ton Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree from Queensbury, NY takes place on November 30 this year. Swank shared that she and husband Philip Schneider are pregnant—and expecting twins—when she appeared on Good Morning America back in October. “This is something that I’ve been wanting for a long time and my next thing is I’m gonna be a mom,” said Swank. “And not just of one, but of two. I can’t believe it.”

An hour later, Swank say down with LIVE with Kelly and Ryan to confirm the news. “I’m pregnant…with twins.” While chatting with the hosts, she admitted that twins means “double excitement.”
Swank and Schneider have been married for four years and the babies will be the first for both of them. While chatting with GMA and LIVE, she did not reveal her due date, but she did say she was far enough along to feel comfortable sharing the news.

From the Venice Canals and Christmas Tree Lane to Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills and Upper Hastings Ranch in Pasadena, these folks really inspire yuletide cheer.
15. Whale Watching in Los Angeles
Gray whale migration kicks off in Dec. as these gigantic creatures make their way south to warmer waters in beautiful Mexico (take us with you!). An amazing thing to do on Christmas Day? Book a whale watching cruise, and make this a holiday truly one for the history books.
Lucky for us, LA has some of the most impressive hiking trails in the country. So work off that extra cup of eggnog and hit up one of the local trails for fresh air and communing with nature. Popular trails like Runyon Canyon, Franklin Canyon, Griffith Park and others will be open all day.
If you’ve always wanted to introduce your kiddos to the hilarity of the Marx Brothers, take advantage of the free time and make this one of your things to do on Christmas Day! New Beverly Cinema will be screening the Marx Brothers classics—Animal Crackers and Horse Feathers as a double feature on Christmas afternoon.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. The name is a combination of “June” and “19th”—a significant day in history when in 1865 federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The holiday was historically celebrated with praying, singing, and even some pilgrimaging back to Galveston. Nowadays the celebrations include backyard BBQs, parades, and fireworks. North County NAACP Celebration
The North County NAACP is hosting a free to the public Juneteenth celebration. This event will highlight the positive changes that have happened in the last 159 years since the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the importance of education, contributions, and achievements. The festival will include marketplace vendors, live entertainment, games, face painting, and more!

For the past 50 years, The Cooper family has hosted a Juneteenth celebration in honor of their patriarch Sidney Cooper Sr. whose vision was to provide a free educational and culturally enriched event to the community. This year the festival will host its first bike rodeo, where kids can bring or borrow a bike and participate in an obstacle course. Also included at the event are live gospel and jazz music, African drumming and dancing, food trucks, and a kids zone.

Juneteenth Movie Night
Artists 4 Black Lives San Diego is celebrating Black Media by hosting a movie night. The double-feature family-friendly movies will begin with Cinderella featuring Brandy and then Marvel's Black Panther. Popcorn is included with the price of admission, and candy and drinks will also be available. Tickets are $10 for the two movies, plus popcorn. Kids two and under are free.
La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends will host their inaugural Juneteenth festival which will be a celebration of life, liberty, and community. The event will include food, live music, entertainment from the MLK choir, a step show, and lots of family fun including a bounce house and crafts.

Old Globe's Juneteenth Celebration
Visit the Old Globe's outdoor theatre for a free Juneteenth Celebration in collaboration with the George L. Stevens Senior Center! Hosted by Gill Sotu, this event’s lineup includes poetry and music by performers Def Sound, Reg E Gaines, and Brittany Taylor; a choir performance by David Dredden and Undefeated; a Juneteenth storytelling by poet Alyce Smith Cooper; a comedy set by Kree Rushing; and a presentation by The Old Globe—all sharing performance pieces inspired by the annual holiday. Although offered for free, tickets are required as this is a general admission event.
