Hop

Hop may just give the adults in the room a case of the jitters, but the movie is cute enough—and who doesn’t love Russell Brand, after all—that we can get beyond the main coming-of-age theme (Really, don’t give them any ideas about growing up, and maybe it just won’t happen, right?). While we can't guarantee you won't buy one too many bottles of Kirkland wine, you definitely won't get charged for more than what you take home thanks to the one thing Costco employees always do before you leave the store. As it turns out checking that receipt and drawing that smiley face has nothing to do with making sure you're not stealing. Instead, Costco does this to ensure that you haven't been double charged for any items.

Another way Costco makes sure you won't overspend is with its 30-day price adjustment policy. According to Eat This, Not That!, if an item goes on sale within 30 days of when you purchased it, Costco will pay you the difference, no receipt needed.

Café Coyote is a favorite with its festive décor, strolling mariachis, and open-air atmosphere. There is also a wide variety of shops in the area like those at Bazaar Del Mundo which sell everything from traditional Mexican clothing and jewelry to pottery and other trinkets.

Grunion Runs

Tinybeans

If you’re dying to take your kids to the beach in the dead of night to stare at mysterious fish, we’ve got you covered. Grunions are a species of silver-colored fish that leave the water at night to spawn on beaches during spring and summer in SoCal. Spawning occurs on nights with full moons and new moons after high tides and continues for many hours. The best runs usually occur on the second and third nights of the four-evening period. Be sure to bring a flashlight for easier spotting and a jacket in case it's chilly. It’s also important to let the fish spawn without disturbing them, so remind littles to keep their eyes peeled and hands to themselves. A schedule of expected runs can be found here.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. The name is a combination of “June” and “19th”—a significant day in history when in 1865 federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The holiday was historically celebrated with praying, singing, and even some pilgrimaging back to Galveston. Nowadays the celebrations include backyard BBQs, parades, and fireworks. Read on for some ideas on how to celebrate our newest federal holiday with your kids in San Diego. Also, check out our article for places to visit this summer to learn more about black history.
