Make sure your kiddos know that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about more than a day off of school

Your little dreamers naturally understand the power and importance of having hopes and wishes, so learning facts about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his “I Have a Dream” speech is a tactile way to help kids understand the significance of who MLK Jr. was. Help the kids learn more about this chief spokesman for nonviolent activism, civil rights, and the end of racial segregation.

Bee Calder on Unsplash

1. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929. His birth name was Michael but was changed to Martin by his father (who also changed his name) in 1934 (after Martin Luther, the leader of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s).

2. At 14 he won a contest with a speech about civil rights.

3. He started college when he was just 15.

4. He worked for a newspaper as one of his first jobs.

5. Stevie Wonder wrote his song "Happy Birthday" to help build on the campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. He asks a simple question throughout the song, “Why has there never been a holiday where peace is celebrated throughout the world? The time is overdue.”

6. According to the King Center, Martin Luther King, Jr. was jailed 30 times for charges such as civil disobedience.

7. MLK Jr. was awarded 20 honorary degrees.

8. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. This act outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It made it illegal to segregate based on race in schools, the workplace, and public accommodations (or facilities that serve the general public including hospitals and libraries). It may be hard for your kiddos to believe that there was once a time when children could not drink from the same drinking fountain or use the same bathroom because of the color of their skin. MLK fought to end that.

9. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in April 1964.

10. Martin Luther King Jr. married Coretta Scott on June 18, 1953. The ceremony was performed by his father, Martin Luther King Sr. Coretta had the vow "to obey" removed from the vows, which was almost unheard of at the time.

11. MLK Jr. and his wife had four children: Martin Luther King III, Bernice King, Yolanda King, and Dexter King.

12. His "I Have a Dream" speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial. He gave a speech there on voting rights in 1957.

13. He survived an attempt on his life in 1958. He was stabbed with a letter opener by Izola Ware Curry. He underwent hours of emergency surgery. Surgeons said one sneeze could have punctured his aorta and killed him.

14. Martin Luther King Jr.'s mother was killed six years after his murder. She was shot while playing the organ at church.

15. One of the best ways kids can understand what he was all about is by listening to his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, which he made on Aug. 28, 1963. Kids of any age can listen and read along through this link

After listening to the speech, ask your kids a few questions to help them grasp the magnitude. Here are a few suggestions:

  • What does it feel like to be excluded? Have you ever been excluded from something?
  • What is a slave? What does it mean to be enslaved?
  • What was the emancipation proclamation
  • What is something you can do to make others feel more included?
  • Can you think of a time when you saw something wasn't right, and you spoke up?
  • What does the word "community" mean to you?
  • What do you love about your community?
  • Is there one thing you can do each day to help others?
  • What are the big things you'd like to change in the world?
  • What is your big dream?

These funny first-day-of-school pictures will have you laughing into your (cold) coffee

Forget about the letterboard back-to-school school pictures, one mama has a genius first-day photo tradition of her own and her idea will make you laugh.

Leslie Brooks started her fabulously funny first-day of school photo shoots back in 2013 when her daughters were elementary school-aged. Now that her kiddos are teens and tweens, she’s made the pics into an annual event.

Brooks’ photos celebrate the freedom that back to school-time brings to parents, with scenes we all kind of dream about. From a relaxing doorstep massage to floating in the pool (on a unicorn while drinking a Starbucks Frap), Brooks’ pics totally nail the first-day vibe—from the mom’s perspective of course.

She’s not the only one who looks forward to the annual event. Her IG followers and friends wait anxiously to see what kind of picture Leslie and her crew will display each year. One commenter said “The most anticipated Instagram post of the year. We all look forward to the “First day of school” pic. You never let us down. 😂😂😂😂. Those faces. 😂😂😂😂😂”

So what do Brooks’ kiddos think of her annual photo shoots? The mom told Good Morning America, “The kids say to me all the time, ‘this is our awesome tradition.'” Brooks went on to add, “We have so much fun with it, they really have come to look forward to the pictures every year. They even started coming up with costume and prop ideas.” But is she really THAT excited to see them go? Not really. “I adore my children,” Brooks said. “Summers are awesome and I really don’t look forward to them going back to school. I miss them incredibly.”

Like its sister store uptown, the LEGO store in the Flatiron District pays homage to its neighborhood with incredible LEGO mosaics on the walls and larger-than-life LEGO sculptures. There’s a Pick & Build here as well, a large selection of kits to buy, and a spot to make your own LEGO figures, too. Plus: building stations at kid-level for some freestyle creation on site. Bonus: there’s a LEGO lounge here, with comfortable seating and photo charging stations, because you may be there for a while…(P.S. don’t miss the contemporary NYC mosaics in the windows.) As your daughter grows, the one thing you can wish for is that she will be happy and confident wherever life takes her. Girls have had a tough time growing up in this age. There are so many beauty standards and expectations. The celebrity culture and social media may pose as if they’re advocating for girls to follow their dreams, but they portray the opposite in reality.

Historically, the culture expected women to stay at home, clean the house and care for their children. If they tried to pursue anything beyond that, they were often looked down upon or reprimanded. While this has changed over the years, your daughters may still have difficulty imagining being anything other than that.

You want to do everything in your power to support and encourage your daughters. Helping her build and grow in confidence to develop her future is one of the best things you can do as a parent. With these tips, you can learn how to encourage our daughters to follow their dreams.

Follow Your Dreams Yourself
Your children look up to you and follow your actions. The things they learn are often a reflection of your attitudes and behaviors. Small children especially soak in everything that you do and remember your actions more than they remember your words. Although the saying is “Do as I say, not as I do,” kids tend to do what you do, whether you like it or not.

That’s why, as a parent, you need to be leading by example for your daughters. If you want a daughter who is confident and pursuing her dreams, then you need to do that yourself. Talk about your dreams and what it took for you to achieve those. If you need further help, give your daughter examples of women who have followed their dreams.

Invest in Your Daughter’s Education
Education is essential in every child’s life. School is where many children hear about people in history who followed their dreams and achieved seemingly impossible goals. Plus, the things your daughter learns in school can empower her and set her up with the necessary skills for a successful future.

Be transparent about the importance of education. Get your daughter excited about learning. Show her how useful it is to get a good education. Education has helped pave the way for breaking gender roles in jobs, which is why you see more and more women doing a “man’s” job!

Help Her Set Realistic & Achievable Goals
Of course, you want to see your daughter reach every goal in her life. However, not everything in life is realistic or achievable. For example, your young daughter might dream of transforming into an animal or living under the sea. Or, your five-year-old daughter might dream of becoming the President of the United States by the age of seven.

These dreams aren’t realistic, but you can help your daughter think of possible alternatives. Maybe instead, she could work at a zoo or be a marine biologist. Additionally, she could work on her presidential dream by reading about presidents or running for student government. Set short-term goals with her that are achievable within the next year so she can feel accomplished.

Listen to Her Dreams
Communicate with your daughter about her dreams. If she has something she wants to achieve, sit down with her and listen. She’s probably super excited about the vision she has, so having someone to listen to her can be encouraging.

Make this time judgment-free. Try to avoid discouraging words. Ask your daughter questions about how she will reach her dreams, and ask if she would like any advice from you. Give her your undivided attention during this time.

Encourage Her to Fix Mistakes on Her Own
As a parent, it’s common to want to pick up after your child and fix their mistakes. While this is sometimes necessary for younger children, as your daughter gets older and can make choices independently, let her fix her own mistakes and make her own decisions.

If you continue to do things for your daughter, she might expect that you do that for her even into adulthood. Mistakes are necessary teaching points in people’s lives. If something bad happens in your daughter’s life, you can discuss it with her and advise if needed, but generally, you want to allow her to problem solve on her own so she can do better next time.

Celebrate Failures, Efforts & Achievements
When following any dream or goal, there will be failures, achievements and strenuous efforts and work. Failing at a short-term goal doesn’t mean your daughter is unsuccessful. Continue to encourage her and rework the goal so it’s something more attainable. Without failure, there wouldn’t be an achievement!

Additionally, celebrate all of the effort and success your daughter has. Focus on all of the hard work she has put into her dreams. This will help build up her confidence in her skills and work and encourage her to keep trying. Of course, when she does achieve a goal, celebrate that, too! It’s exciting when your daughter reaches an accomplishment, no matter how big or small.

Dream Big, Daughters
Each time your daughter has a new dream, be open to it. Share in the excitement and wonder about her plans for the future. Above all, respect her dreams and let her follow her own path. Be there with her all the way!
